OI File Manager is not that bad? - Optimus One, P500, V General

Hi all. I'm a new Android user (and new P500 user as well). At the start I've been advised by my friends and a lot of internet opinions that Astro is one of the best file managers for Android. So I started using Astro right then, and to be fair, I've been really happy with it. It has the looks, the functions, and although it sometimes lags here and there, it's really good for the free version. But after all, I mostly used it just to install apks from the sd card.
Today I was bored and started playing around with my Optimus One a bit. So I tried the OI File Manager (the default file manager that came pre-installed on my handset, I don't know if you guys have it). And yes, I'm impressed. I expected it to be just a little piece of junk, turned out it actually worked. Although it lacks most of the advanced functions, the browsing experience was really nice. I didn't feel any lag when browsing through large folders of many files, and it has kinetic scrolling too. It delivers the smooth feeling like when you scroll the music list in the default "music" app or video list in the "video" app. It can even install the apks on the sd card, as well. And thumbnail for images works fast and smooth (in Astro they appear laggy).
So IMO, the OI File Manager is not completely useless. For quick browsing for some files, or install apks from the sd card,.. it seems to be the better choice than Astro. What do you guys think?
// And yes, my English is still bad

taking control of apps and downloads

ok so this is my first smart phone and i hate that i feel like such a noob! i am accustomed to having control of everything win7.
i have astro installed on my rooted phone. just downloaded an app from amazon. i have not installed it yet and have no idea where the dang app is temporarily stored.
is there anyway to take control of the default file location for downloads? i would like to save the apk to my pc prior to installing it on the phone.
additionally im guessing that when an app is installed it creates folders and file locations that the app needs to function on the phone. so when apps are installed and uninstalled over time will there eventually be orphan files and folders that just take up space and cause performance issues?
Most market apps are stored in data/app. No. It wont cause performance issues.

[Q] Hiding the Folder Assault??

While granted I am new to Android, I'm amazed at the lazy programming from a VAST majority of apps. I'm assuming Google probably has a recommended location for all this in their development kits, as did Microsoft?? It seems every program is creating a randomly and irritatingly named folder everywhere on my phone memory and sdcard. I take a lot of time keeping my files neat and orderly, and I now have literally 100 extra folders named something arbitrary like /"program name" thumbnails, /"program name" data, etc. I've been a long time windows mobile user, and generally programs put their added folder in a mutually used program files or program data location, etc. Is there any way to fix this, from the user side such as hiding these folders from showing up in explorers. It's impossible to navigate after owning my Atrix for a few months.
Any other solution or ideas would be welcome, as I can't be the only one that is driven crazy by this.
thanks
This also drives me crazy. I don't know of any file explorers that can hide folders(though its a great IDEA) and I feel like moving them may cause unwanted effects in-app.
Some dev input would be nice

I've successfully moved just a couple for programs that let you point to a different directory in their settings. But, that's few and far between, and a lot of Apps aren't yet updated to recognize the way the Atrix uses sdcard to name their 'phone memory' and sdcard-ext for 'sdcard'. If I only had the knowledge to do so I would develop a solution. Lacking that, definitely would donate to anyone creating a real working solution for this...or even for pointing me to an existing one.
If any developer here could confirm, does Google recommend a location for all these extra data folders, and it's just ignored. Possibly a limitation of the OS forces developers to create folders directly in root areas for access reasons?
So another issue I have on this topic. Again, I take great care in organizing all my files, especially my music. I have it pain-stakingly divided into folders for easily playing what I want, when I want. I can't seem to get any Android music player to recognize this though. They just want to scan everything, and in the middle of my workouts, my *&$%ing ringtones will start playing in the mix, or a news podcast. I'll have to stop what I'm doing, resist throwing my Atrix through the wall, and manually skip them. I just gave up playing music on it, and take my old Windows Mobile phone with me for this. There has to be a program that allows you to remove folders from being scanned, as I know nobody needs to hear a montage of ringtones for 20 minutes.
Yes, that happened to me, started playing music, and the second I got in the shower I had to listen to train whistles and notification beeps the whole time. WTF?
K...enough venting!

You can create an empty file called .nomedia to exclude this folder from the media scanner. Also, you can use PowerAmp to play music, it allows to select folders and make playlist from them, without use the android media scanner.

I'll give PwerAmp a try, thanks.

[Q] Astro file manager

Anyone else having problems with Astro file manager? After updating to 3.0.203 Astro would not work on my nook, but it works fine on my cell phone. Now when I try to access the sd card I would get this message saying "directory does not exist, create error writing file". Root explorer has no problem mounting the sd. any ideas?
There is a hidden second column, pull it out from the extreme right.
WOW! totally miss that. its like a secret trap door. not sure if i like this update. once again, thanks joe
Yeah, I think I like the older version better, everything is way too blue and bloated now. I liked how lite weight Astro was...
After being used Astro for months w/o issue, just after update to new version, I got FC when running it.
I had the same problem, but i had to set the right path in Astro preferences. Open Astro, go to Preferences and there set "Removable/MicroSD" for External storage and "Removable/USBdisk1" for pen drive. Hope it helps.
*And sorry for my bad English.
Whoa I was having this problem too. I'll have to try the secret 2nd column. I agree, the old version was way better. Every time I open it now I just stare at it confused. I've been primarily using File Expert for a while now.
Does Astro with the SMB plug in work? It crashes for me all the time. That is why I use File Expert.

Folder File structure for dual boot

Looking for input on the best way to set up file folders to be utilized on both WebOS and Android partitions. I tend to go into probably Way too much detail, skip to the bottom for the tl:dr.
I first noticed that the TouchPad doesn't handle folders very well when I tried organizing many files for school. I had each class in a different folder hierarchy based on course. But when I go to access them, they show up as a huge long list of .pdfs instead of my nice organized fashion. Similar thing happened with my music. I shrugged my shoulders cause my file naming convention was good enough that I had no issues.
Then I installed CM7 Alpha 3.0 (recently flashed 3.5, same situation). Got the Android partition all setup the way I wanted, and further organized my folder structure to match. Rocked Android for a few weeks, and got nostalgic, so I booted back to WebOS. I immediately noticed that my TouchPad claimed I had no music, while not a lot, there's around 5gigs floating on it. Told myself I would look into it, spaced it off. That was until I noticed I couldn't access any recently downloaded and organized .pdfs that were done on the Android boot. What gives?
I've always found it frustrating that the native file selection system in WebOS doesn't give you file path options, but it is what it is. I know there is a file system browser on Preware, honestly I think it's cumbersome, but may have to rely on that I suppose. I have major OCD as far as how folders are organized, and really don't want to just dump everything on the root. But again, if I have to, I shall.
TL: DR Ultimately I'm trying to get info on how the WebOS partition sees files, and how the folder heirarchy works. I have files in some folders that are recognized, and some that are not. Is it naming convention, or just location? My file issues are primarily .pdfs and music files, but concerned with any productivity file extensions for the sake of school (primary use of device.)
16Gb TouchPad WebOS 3.0.4, F4 Phantom kernel, great number of patches, Dual boot CM7 3.50
Did you (or anyone else) ever find any information on this issue? I find it frustrating having to go through Internalz Pro and go through each folder to do anything. My music will not show up through the stock player (which would be great on webOS because the android sound goes bad when the screen is off).
I have not. Haven't played with my TouchPad much recently, mainly cause every ROM I flash wifi breaks.. lol.
If I ever do get a solid solution, I will try to post up.
im betting this a indexer issue if want try to force it to index, look for "Media Indexer Refresh" in preware, that should find any stray media supported by webos
Yeah, it's definitely an indexer issue. A lot of people used to say to connect it via USB and then do a hard unmount (where it says "ouch...") and let the indexer run but that doesn't work.
Thank you for that suggestion though, it is exactly what I needed. I always thought there should be some command or some patch that would force it to re-index but never found it. I ran it one time and my pics and music show up. Awesome!!

Recommended File Explorer?

Hi everyone~ This would be my first thread here, hope to get along with you all~ Anyways, I had my Z5C for almost a year now, and just wanted to know if you guys have any recommended File Explorer. I've been using ES File Explorer since getting mine because the default File Explorer has way too less details and functions. But recently ES File Explorer gave me problems as well such as "Not Responding" and already has 100+ incidents since my last restart 3 days ago. :'( Anyway, I would like to know what File Explorer you guys are using and what would you recommend? One File Explorer with network feature or LAN would be nice too. Thanks guys~
ES FE(Free version) definitely most universal.
Root E(Paid version) using for system intrusion.
Solid Explorer(Paid version) on third place, I can use it like alternative to other previous two explorers.
i used much ES for a very long time, paired with root explorer for some tasks
but with last updates, ES is a like a low cost swiss knife with so many useless tools
since a few mounthes i passed to Solid Explorer and its perfect for my use, dont use Root Eplorer anymore, much personalized, chromecast compatible, usefull double panel, FTP add on
so i also removed my old ftp server app
I use X-plore since Symbian times and it is really full of features. Give it a try.
FX suit the best to me
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ghisler.android.TotalCommander&hl=sr and https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.toolbox.full&hl=sr
usin total commander since 2.3
i use ES mostly for wireless access and Zip... BUT
they become spammy and alot of malware and liers
i remember they said they're new lockscreen is save battery they activated without asking and its drain more of the battery cuz it had ads and using data
for the rest im using stock FK file commander
I recommend MiXplorer, has everything you need and is totally free.
FX File Explorer
Using FX Plus . Its Awesome
Solid Explorer!
Solid Explorer all the way.
It nagging you to buy it is kind of annoying, but totally worth it. The animations are great and the features thought out and powerful.
But I can barely stress enough how great the animations are. They really are good. It's pretty visible that the developer cares.
I totally styled that post out with a picture, link to the great website and a youtube video, but it turns out that I can't post any links because my account is too new.
I've been using ES forever but like with most people, it has gotten very bloated and I'm looking for a change. Haven't found anything I like more yet.
Used AntTek Explorer before, but slow updates and lots of bugs with newer system got me to change to FX File Explorer. This is the best (in both look and use) that I tried so far
Total Commander. I'm using the Windows version since ages and on Android it works pretty well for me too (incl. tools like text editor, media player etc.). And it's totally free with no ads!
I had some issues with Solid explorer "errors when copying big files between internal and external storage", and found FX file explorer the best for me.
Root Explorer, the best file explorer by far.
Asus file explorer, free and complete.
Total Commander since ES File Explorer got totally bloated
Solid explorer seem nice. Does everything i need, and its modular.
I've been using ES for ages, and yes, the free version has gotten pretty bloated up, but I broke down and bought the paid version, which seems to fix all of that and has a nice dark theme as default. I've considered trying other file managers, but some of the extra features in ES (like ringtone picker, etc) are nice.
