Walkthrough of Froyo SD install, configuration, and overclocking
Anyone who is a bit confused and not sure where to begin or what's involved in the process, I wrote up a little guide to help:
How to Pick your Nook Color Operating System and Install Options
And then for those who need a helping hand for the individual install flavors, check out the guides I wrote:
If you're having stability / force close / file corruption trouble with an SD installed OS (like verygreen's), or just want to install internally, here's my guide to installing phiremod to eMMC (internal memory):
Guide to Installing CyanogenMod 7 (phiremod flavor) on eMMC
For anyone looking to install CyanogenMod 7 with Dalingrin's overclocking and Bluetooth on your Nook Color (via SD card) I just wrote a little guide, particular good for newbies or people having trouble:
Guide to Installing CyanogenMod 7 on an SD card
And if you want to run Froyo off SD with the Dalingrin OC kernel and all the apps/configurations you'd need to really start off right. It refers out to the various other documents and links you'll need, like the NookDev SD card creation doc, their tips and tricks, the Dalingrin OC kernel thread, and adds a list of other changes/apps most users might want to have. I wrote it because if you're like me and don't do this on a regular basis you benefit from a bit of hand holding, and having all the steps arranged in order across the various disparate guides. So, if you think it's useful, great!

I just discovered Nook was hackable today and have been reading all over, but honestly, I don't know how to do it (bear in mind, it took me four weeks of reading before flashing my phone), AND...
I don't know what the Nook "looks like" after you do it. Is it a Nook with more features (i.e., still a reader, but more)? Is it a tablet computer and not reader-centric any more? Is it one thing if run from the card and still Nook if run without the card? What?
And guide writer, whoever you turn out to be, you will have more friends than you know what to do with.

DISCLAIMER: this is based on my limited understanding as a noob. It may be missing in some details, but as "a general idea", it should be fine.
I cant give you an efficient walkthrough of the "how-to"s but I'll give an overview so you can know what your dealing with. The "how-to"s are already existing all over xda, theyre just intimidating when you dont know what they mean and they appear like an intermingled mess.
As I see it there are basically three different paths for hacking your Nook. First you have to decide which one you want to try, narrow it down to a particular ROM or build, then use that particular "how-to". Then its not so bad.
1. Root the original B&N software, keeping the e-reader centric OS in tact,
adding the ability to install other android features such as the Android
Market (i.e all sorts of apps like youtube, etc) as well as the ability to
overclock your processor (speed up the device). All the threads with "Auto-
nooter" in the title refer to this method.
2. Run a bootable version of android via an SD card. This puts a full
version of Android OS like Froyo (2.2) or Honycomb (3.0) on an SD card
which you can then put in the Nook. Turn it on and you boot into a full
Android experience. You will not have the B&N e-reader software but you can
install the Nook app from the market and sync your B&N purchases (its not
as fancy, but it gets the job done). This is one of the easier methods and it is
also nice to be able to take the SD card out anytime and boot into your
original device untouched. All the threads with "Bootable, SD card, SD
bootable, etc" refer to this.
3. The third method is EMMC. This, like the second method, replaces the B&N e-
reader software, but the difference is it actually installs an Android system
onto the Nooks internal hardware instead of running off an SD card. For this
you use ClockworkMod and the process isnt that intimidating once you
actually get started and just follow the instructions. (took me two weeks to
face it. once i did it was fairly straight forward).
In my opinion each has its pros and cons, but these are mostly due to my personal preferences. I dont have so much know-how so firstly I want things to be retard proof "one-click" simple. Others may not have this criteria.
I personally like bootable SDs but for me the only real draw back is that the ROM i prefer the most is not available as a bootable SD (at least not yet... ) (mad-murdock has done a great job http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002000)
If you want me to point you in any particular direction (a how-to or a ROM, etc) based on my limited experience as a noob, just PM me. I'll write back according to what I may have learned. Just dont bother asking about the first method, it seemed to complicated to get the market working so I never tried it.

Thanks for updating the list, NuroSlam!
Is this pretty complete, or are there projects missing? It's honestly pretty confusing what with all the independent distributions people are rolling up and borrowing from one another...
Great, but confusing.
Edit: For example, what about "[ROM][CM7] Size-agnostic SD Card image and CM7 installer for SD Cards. with updater" ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957 ) ?

NuroSlam, I'm not sure where this would fit in your list, but the only way I know of to create a bootable CM7 ROM on microSD without modifying the internal eMMC or having to use two different SD cards is jtbnet's procedure at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1022786
That's the method I used yesterday and it worked well. Thanks...

Booting into CWR from a running ROM (not bootable SD card)
This seems as a place as any to ask this question, I can not get my Nook, running CM7 stable with Dalingrens 4/13a OC kernel, to go into Recovery from ROM manager. I have RM installed, 3.0.1.0 and when I hold the power button down and select "Reboot" into Recovery ---- it reboots and comes right back to the ROM. Now on another site someone claims their Nook will boot right into Recovery no problem. Am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated.
Ronin
P.S. I have a bootable SD set aside to flash, but it is a pain vs just going str8 to CWR without switching SD cards.
http://db.tt/oFLnqic

Could the OP maybe change the title a bit and add some common issues so far that can be fixed?
I can dig up how to do them, but the things I'm talking about are:
wifi:
- if you've ever touched airplane mode, edit the sql file
- if you're running the latest kernel, try to "forget" your networks, then try again
- enable ad-hoc
app won't work:
- boot into CWR, fix permissions
- set proper wallpapers
- just because it comes in zip format doesn't mean to use CWR!
system tweaks:
- getting hulu to work
- custom boot animation
- flashing new kernels
There just seems to be a lot of things that need to be seen by others that cannot unless they read every thread (most don't, resulting in a lot of multiple posts).

you da bomb, ty. this should be the first thing any new owner walking into these forums reads.

hey quinxy. Can you update your amazing guide to reflect that new nooks should have their partitions redone to the old fashion way to ensure successful rom loading without an sd card?

Remove the Good Housekeeping sample cookbook without root!
First, follow the instructions below to make a bootable ClockworkMod SD card :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=987735
After that's done, copy the file below to the root directory of the same SD card. DO NOT UNZIP! Allow the Nook to boot into CWM and install the zip from the SD card. Once it's done, power off the Nook, remove the SD card, and boot normally. Voila! No more annoying cookbook sample that was previously un-deletable without root! Enjoy!

Fixing SD card format problems after using image burn or creating a bootable SD
I get this question all the time in the threads for bootable SD cards.
"When i put my bootable 8 gb SD card in my PC it shows only 142mb of space even after I format it. HELP!!"
If you use image burn to create a bootable SD card and then later you want to clean the card off and reformat it read this.
Use the program SDFormat v3 and make sure to click options : Format size adjustment : ON . This has worked for me when a nook image SD or partition was gooked up and I needed to clean the card and fresh format it. Also, use an external card reader/writer. Doing image burn or format on the PC's built-in SD card slot usually does not work well.
In SDFormatter under the Format Options dropdown menu is a second menu called “format size adjustment” that asks if you want to try to increase the amount of space on your SD card or not. Turning this option on will allow you to use the maximum space possible on your SD card. Once you have made your selection, click OK.."
Using SDformatter with Format size adjustment : ON will ignor any partitions like your 140mb boot partitions and create one contiguous Fat32 partition using all of your SD card. If you don't do it that way, your 16gb SD card will look like a 140mb SD card when you format it after you have put a boot image on it
See this link for more details and to download the SD Format software for Windows.

Can the OP update the first page please?! It's helpful, but there's been many advances since February...

Manual Neuter
I just purchased a nook color, and it came with 1.2 installed. While Nueter, Auto-nueter and Super-nueter all appear to have been good solutions, I too concur that the OP should be updated. Manual-nueter seems to be the rooting direction I'm headed in.

Quinxy site is down
I just got my Nook. So far, after browsing many threads, I can't even find out where to start from. Looks like quinxy had written some instructions for noobs but his site is down, so I can't read those. Any other places I can look on XDA for answers? I'm specifically interested in using CM7 but need to root first I guess... Any help would be appreciated.

CM7 is a custom ROM that is already rooted. You have that option or rooting the stock ROM which will allow you to keep the NC features but add the Android Market. You don't do both. If you decide you want to go with CM7 you can either replace the internal stock ROM with CM7 or you can put CM7 on an SD card and boot from it when you wish. One caveat with the last option is constantly removing and replacing the SD card may ultimately trash the SD reader slot on your Nook.
You need to make decisions before you starting researching how to do it.

One more thing to look into, you probably have a newer Nook (with the blue dot box) if you want to go eMMC with cm7,then a repartition of the internal partitions is required. I had an older one from this March and never had to do it. But I most definitely recommend eMMC, you can even dualboot with fattires new uboot. The newer nightlies (currently stuck @177) even have OC built-in.

Auto-Nooter 3.0.0 (1.1 only)

*ALL THE USUAL DISCLAIMERS AND WARNINGS*
*THIS IS FOR VERSION 1.1 ONLY, DON’T TRY ON 1.0.0 OR 1.0.1*
Credit goes to: GabrialDestruir for the original auto-nooter, GLa’DOS for the boot animation, pokey9000 for nooter, Mistar Muffin for Market and GTalk Fix, clockworx for the “non-ugly” patch that is used to get androidID, mastapsi for testing and coding of the original auto-nooter, lewellyn for coding, [mbm] for ABI Fix, Hotaru for the Gingerbread keyboard, rpollard00 for DroidX keyboard with bigger font, bpk for Soft Keys, Ben74 for NookColor Tools which enables Non Market Installs and re-enable of ADB , Freenode's #nookcolor chat for code checking. A special thanks to all developers out there, without all of you this community would not be as great as it is.
Please Note: If you are the developer of an app that is included in this work, and would like me to remove it, feel free to contact me.
*I am copying the following step from the original auto-nooter, because they are tried and true, and people are already familiar with seeing them*
What it does:
Installs su and Superuser.apk
Installs Busybox with whoami
Installs Softkeys 3.0.6
Installs NookColor Tools (To Enable Non-Market Installs, and re-enable ADB)
Installs Calendar and Calculator.
Installs Android Market, Gmail, Youtube
Installs Gingerbread Keyboard
Enable ADB
Enable Multi-touch for Android Apps
Enables Live Wallpapers
Enables Android Market and Gmail.
App Auto Install (Open up NooterFiles from sdcard drop in /data/app)
Known Problems:
With the version 1.1 update, ADB will not stay active after a reboot or unplug of the cable. To enable each time you want to use it, you will have to go into NookColor Tools /All Settings/Development/USB debugging, you will have to uncheck the box and then recheck it.
How to Use:
Before you begin:
* To update to 1.1 you must do a complete wipe.
* You must update to 1.1 to use Auto-Nooter 3.0.0 Instructions HERE.
1 You must already have a registered NOOKcolor
2 You must have a Gmail/Youtube linked Account. IF you used a Gmail account for B&N Registration you should use that one for this process.
3 You must either have dd (Linux) or WinImage (Windows) software.
4 You must have an external microSDCard reader or this will not work. Do NOT use the NC.
5 You must have enough intelligence to follow instructions.
Let's get started:
1 Download Auto-Nooter from here: MultiUpload or MediaFire
*MD5 FB74865663B8D797A486A85022FAD9B2*
2 Linux: Unzip and use dd if=auto-nooter-3.0.0.img of=/dev/sdcard
2 Windows: Unzip and use WinImage to "Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image" to your SDcard.
2 Windows Alternative: https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download
3 Unplug your NOOKcolor from computer. (If Plugged in.)
4 Insert AutoNooter SDcard into your NOOKcolor.
5 Plug the USB cable into your computer and your NOOKcolor. (This will boot up the NOOKcolor.)
6 Your NookColor will reboot when it's done.
That was the hard part, now to the simple stuff.
7 Upon boot unlock your screen.
8 At the Android Welcome Screen skip Sign In.
9 Enable Location Services when given the option.
10 Connect to Wifi and launch Youtube from "Extras".
11 Click the Menu button (The one RIGHT of the Up Arrow).
12 Select "My Channel" and Login using your Gmail Account.
13 Exit Youtube and Launch Gmail from "Extras".
14 Sync your Gmail Account and Exit. (If it fails to sync that is fine.)
15 Open up Market and Accept Terms and Service.
If you made it this far your nook should be successfully Rooted. Go Download an App to make sure.
16 Enable Non-Market Installs by running the NookColor Tools App.
17 If your Youtube fails to launch, download the attached EVO HQ, and follow this code in adb
Code:
adb shell mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /system
adb uninstall com.google.android.youtube
adb push YouTube.apk /system/app
adb reboot
18 Go to Settings > Device Info > SdCard > UnMount > Format
Complete Wipe:
1 8 Failed Boots > Wipes /system
2 Factory ResetFactory Reset > Wipes /data
*You must do both of these to completely wipe clean your NOOKcolor.*
*Before anyone starts to say that I took this project away from GabrialDestruir, I posted this file in the original post, and sent the OP a PM asking to update the current project. I have yet to hear back, and the post was not updated. My post can be found HERE, dated February 2, 2011. I felt that this would be of a benefit to the community, so I am posting it now. If I am asked at some point to take it down I will do so at that time.*

I have never really seen an explanation as to why you don't format on the NC. I have formated via the NC and the card works fine both in the NC and my PC. When I want to burn an image, I have been able too. Been able to flash other images on it too.
Excellent!
Can you please add an MD5 to the first post?

Formatting the SDcard doesn't touch the onboard storage. It is one of the easier ways to remove bonus partitions to recover the full card. UPDATE: I should clarify this: when running Eclair internally.

You're thinking of Nookie Froyo. The stock B&N system is fine for formatting the card.
I think formatting the SD card is an issue when you use one of the Froyo images and boot from eMMC. When you format the SD card it actually formats the internal boot partition or some such. I remember reading it in one of the threads which led me to only boot the Froyo images from an external card.
I am at 1.1.0. When did 1.1.1 appear & how do I get it?
BTW Is this exactly the same as the interim A-N 2.12.25 modified for 1.1?
k
I'd say it's a typo and should be v1.1?

Just for clarification, in steps 3 & 4 should the NC be turned off? I have never been sure if it matters, but the following statement makes me think that it should be off,
"5 Plug the USB cable into your computer and your NOOKcolor. (This will boot up the NOOKcolor.)"

I guess it should be the same, but I had a couple of games break after up'ing with 1.1_r2. So I wanted to try stock/clean 1.1 and then root...hoping this would bring them back.
help please
I'm having a problem rooting my nook color. 2 weeks ago I was fully rooted and for some reason I forget why? but I went back to stock. recently I updated to the newest Barnes & noble firmware. seeing the recent developments of honeycomb I wanted to root my nook again. so I tried downgrading to firmware before the most recent update and using that version of auto nooter. I followed the instructions exactly to a tee. the problem is my nook wont load the disk image from the sd card. I made sure to fully format the sd card before writing the img with Win32DiskImager. I made sure the nook was completely off then plugging in the usb to into the pc to wake up the nook. but nothing? the nook boots up like normal then says sd card damaged. I've formatted the sd card again and have used the newest nooter for my current 1.1. but nothing. the only difference is the first time I rooted I was at my mothers and used her pc. it was a windows vista 64 bit. my computer is windows seven 64 bit. anyone have any idea's as to why the nook wont load the sd card with the nooter image? I'm using the same sd card I was able to root from before. so I seriously doubt its the sd card. I am properly formatting it before writing the img. I am having no problem writing the img. any help would be appreciated

Forgive my ignorance here, but I thought you were never supposed to use the NC to format your SD card? (last step)
I thought I read somewhere that it messes up something in the emmc?
Hopefully I'm wrong and just paranoid

You probably have a bad burn on the sdcard. Are you writing to the sdcard from the sd card reader or from the nook? Also, if you return to stock, (8 failed boots, then Power+N) You should be on firmware 1.0.0 or 1.0.1. Then root using one of the two original auto nooters, download rom manager from the market and flash the 1.1 pre-rooted firmware.
Thanks buddy, I try doing that. and I don't have an sd card reader so I just put the sd card that I'm going to write into my cell phone. then mount the sd card and write the img to the same storage device that represents the sd card. I'm sure this is the wrong way of doing it but I have gotten root doing the same thing before
Giving this a go now, coming from auto-nootered 1.0.1.

[ROMS]Dualboot Phiremod / Honeycomb Image for SDcard [UPDATE-6/22]

Hi again everyone,
I've prepped an IMG file that you can dualboot Phiremod v6.1 and HC v4 2nd Edition off one SDcard.
1-The image file is 3.7gb. So you will need a 4gb SDcard or larger.
2-Both roms share the same SDcard partition. So on a 4gb card, the available space is limited to 1.8gb.
3-If you use an 8gb SDcard. To get use of the remaining storage on your SDcard. Just burn the image and then use EASUS Partition Manager to extend the SDcard partition. (Which is the 7th partition on the card)
4-I've udpated the Phiremod v6.1 with:
-The latest OC Kernel by Dalingrin 041811C
-Alsa update for smoother video playback
-Honeycomb Softkey Icons by XDA user Bawb3
I've done this mainly just for fun and to see if it would work and thought I'd share it with everyone if you wanna give it a go. Thanks to all the devs for all their hard work in getting these great ROMs for our Nook Color.

Follow directions from Nookdevs.com to burn the image to your SDcard.
Burning a bootable SD card
Once you burn the image to your SDcard. Power off your nook and place the SDcard in your nook.
-To boot into Phiremod Nook v6.1 just power on your nook with the sdcard in and leave it alone.
-To boot into HCv4 2nd Edition, hold the HOME button while powering on. Continue holding the HOME button until you see the "Android..._" screen.
Take it or leave it, just hope you enjoy it.

Edit 5/23: Updated Img with Phiremod 6.2 and Madcat's Honeycomb Hybrid-RC1
Reason for creating a new image and not just a flashable update is because the HC Hybrid /system was too large to fit on the original Dualboot img. So I prepped a new one for that reason as well as making the image smaller so it will definitely fit on a 4gb uSDcard.
What's included in this new image:
1- A 3.4gb Img file that should fit on any 4gb uSDcard or larger
2- J4mm3r's u-boot menu! (Read here for more info on how to use it)
3- Latest Phiremod 6.2 with Dalingrins 4/13a OC and Alsa update
4- Latest Divine_Madcat's Honeycomb Hybrid RC1
5- Honeycomb Hybrid RC1 has my sdcard mount workaround. I also included a file manager.
6- Read here for more info on the sdcard mount workaround.
7- Follow the steps above to burn the image to your uSDcard
8- Enjoy!
Keep in mind that the Honeycomb Hybrid RC1 is a work in progress so there are known issues. I suggest you read the OP in this thread here to see what's working and what isn't.

This will only format /system. Data stays intact.
1-If you're still using the original Dualboot-SD img. Follow directions below from 5/5 update on how to install latest Phiremod to your Dualboot-SDrom.
2-If you're using latest Dualboot-SD v0.2 with j4mm3r's boot menu. Choose to boot into SD-->Recovery and flash from there.

Update 6/22-Phiremod Nook v7-Test Dualboot SD Package Update:
This will format /system and /data of your Phiremod rom. So please backup all your apps!
Well I went ahead and made it easier for everyone. So I packaged the whole Phiremod v7-Test as a CWM-SD Flashable zip. This will install phiremod-nook-v7-test, gapps, and will install the launcher-pro backup to the sdcard partition for you.
-All you have to do is download the 'phiremod-nook-v7-TEST-SD-CWM-package.zip' file, no need to extract anything
-Boot into CWM-SD and flash the package zip file
-Reboot when done
-It will prompt with 2 different options on startup, choose "Setup Wizard"
-For some reason it won't get past that, even when touching the Android guy, to get around this touch all 4 corners of the nook screen starting with:
1. top left hand corner
2. top right hand corner
3. bottom right hand corner (just above the 'change language' button)
4. bottom left hand corner (just above the 'emergency' button)
-That should get you to the main screen.
-Connect to a wireless network
-Market will not populate correctly, so go into the app drawer and choose 'Talk'
-That should give you an option to add a google account
-Once completed go back to the main screen and goto options--> preferences --> and restore the launcher pro backup
-You should now see Market on the home screen
-Don't forget to thank the devs!
-Personal thank you to "bdeville" for testing the .zips for me before I borked any more installations!

Edit 5/5: Update Phiremod to 6.2 and Honeycomb to Madcat's Honeycomb_RC1
1- I forgot to mention that with your dualboot rom SDcard. It also contains a Modded CWM that will allow you to flash updated roms from "my" thread only!
2- Place the .zips you downloaded from this thread onto your /sdcard (7th) partition.
3- To boot into the Modded CWM. When powering on your nook. Hold the "volume+/volume-" together while booting up, until it loads up CWM
4- Now select "choose zip from sdcard"
5- Choose the .zip file and confirm "yes"
6- Sit back and let it do its thing
7- You can either flash another rom or go back to the CWM main menu and choose "Reboot system now"
8- Enjoy your updated roms!

If you get a keyboard failure error on first boot. Just do a quick reboot and it should go away. Downloads from market seems very slow off an SDcard install. Might just depend on what Class it is. And remember. This is a WIP. Don't forget to thank Madcat for his work on this!

Just when I think: "Enough of this craziness, let's just sit down and enjoy my nifty little device," along comes YET ANOTHER rom to flash!
If I do this one, though, I get back one, maybe two of my 8 GB cards. So, win/win.
Excellent work, Racks!

Howdy,
Any way to implement this "mod" into your image???
[ZIP][CM7] Nook Color SDcard and emmc swap!
Thanks very much Racks, it works really well. Finally get a chance to try Phiremod and honeycomb without using 2 SD cards!! I only have one, the poor guy that I am
I too loaded the image to a 4 gig card and it seems to work fine so far. Thanks for your efforts!
Thanks man.... It worked for me as well!
oops maybe I spoke too soon, the phiremod works ok, but, the honeycomb loader never gets by the screen with the android_ on it. I will reflash later without epanding the partition on the SD card to see does that make a difference.
(yeah I used an 8GB card and used easus to expand the 7th partition.)
Glad to see that this image was useful to some!
Thanks everyone for the thanks,

Didn't actually get to try it last night. Bandwidth trouble.
Downloaded, unzipped, flashed to a 8gb Sandisk card. Left it as burned.
Installed in Nook: Booted to Phiremod AOK. Rebooted into Honeycomb AOK*.
Shut down and put sdcard back in my PC to resize the sdcard partition. Hmmm.
Both EASUS and MiniTool show the card as 8GB unallocated (ie: no partition information available!!).
Put it back in nook and reboot. Comes up to phiremod AOK. Weird.
OK, second time around putting SDcard in PC, I got correct mount and could edit partitions.
glg
* - Honeycomb lock screen says "Running on internal eMMC" which we know is not true.
** - I love that you changed the POST message. Those of us in Pennsylvania see the stock message as Touch the Future of Redding (the city). Um.. Not without latex gloves, I think.

Lol. I really appreciate you sharing your experience with everyone.
And regarding honeycomb mentioning it's running off emmc. That's because I took the complete zip from samuelhalffs thread without modification and prepped it for the SD install.
Thanks,

How would i benefit if i already have phiremod v6 installed emmc?
First ever post: Great Job!!
Have been a lurker in the site for the longest time. Been actively watching the developments in the HD2, NookColor and GTab forums.
Kudos to all the developers and modders who've made Android dream a reality.
And, a special thanks to you, who made it a double treat for people like me.
Only trouble, with this dual ROM (which I've to tell you, my friend, has blown my mind away), that I've not been able to overcome yet is, getting my XP Pro or Win 7 Pro to recognize my 7th partition (SDCard). Nothing I've done so far has helped.
Tried both ADB and NookColorUMS. I sure am doing something wrong. Any help is much appreciated.
Once again, THANK YOU!

Thanks for the kind words. Just remember to thank the guys who developed the roms. To mount the 7th partition try running the following command in adb shell:
#echo /dev/block/mmcblk1p7 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file
This should mount the 7th partition. Let me know if it works.
Thanks,
Racks
I was looking to dual boot Phiremod and Stock on EMMC after seeing how awesome Phiremod is, but the place that I found supplying ROMs for dual-boot EMMC doesn't have Phiremod. Do you know where I could find it/do it (total n00b)

Market script
Excellent work OP (and obviously all the devs that made the roms etc.). One quick question though, I first flashed this image on a transcend class 6 8gb card and, due to the low random write speeds, I experienced random sluggishness and force closes. I will be resolving this issue tomorrow, but another issue has arisen. When I first ran the market a script ran that asked which gapps i wanted installed. After it directed me to install the first two gapps the market force closed. Before I had realized that it was my SD card that was causing the force closes I tried reflashing the SD card with this image again but when I opened the market again after reflashing the script didn't run.
My question is this: When I flash the new SD card will the market script run again? And if not, how would I go about have the market script run again?
Thanks in Advance,
Deusx

Below you will find Internal release of our Nook tablet CM7. This has been rebuilt from the most recent CM7 stable source. I'll update the 2nd posts with release information asap.
Please feel free to base your rom on ours, I believe it is now tested well enough and is sufficiently stable to use.

INTERNAL VERSION 8GB & 16GB COMPATIBLE
Download HERE MD5 95043b08484aa218ccf93b5ef4785825
For the internal version you need have access to CWM either internally installed as your recovery or from an SD card. I'm not going to reinvent the wheel telling people how to do that. Just have a look through the development thread and you'll se numerous threads showing you how to do this.
This version has the ability to reboot to recovery added to the reboot option in the power menu. It does not however come with a recovery image, this was already released by lavero.burgos and can be downloaded from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640958
PLEASE BACK EVERYTHING UP BEFORE YOUR BEGIN!!!!
Once you have CWM on screen with the downloaded update zip archive on your sd card, Follow these simple steps
1. Goto install zip from sdcard
2. Choose zip from sdcard ( if CWM hasn't recognized your SD card you need to eject it and re insert it once or twice, sometimes you need to go to mounts and unmount SD, pop it out and back in then select mount sd)
3. choose the CM7-TEAM-B-BETA1-signed.zip
4. scroll down and select Yes - Install CM7-TEAM-B-BETA1-signed.zip
5. sit back for a couple of minutes while the installation is carried out
That’s CM7 installed, next you need to prepare the rest of the device
1. press your power button once
2. ***OPTIONAL*** scroll down and select wipe data / factory reset, this is optional but if you are coming from a different OS it is recommended, if you don't it can sometimes causes force closes and various other issues.
3. you're ready to roll! scroll up and select reboot system, initial boot can take a while and does pause for a short while on the black screen between flash page and CM7 Animation, enjoy CM7 For Nook Tablet!
if you were already running a version of CM7 it is possible you may be able to skip the wipe data bit and just select wipe cache instead but it's best if you can wipe data and know that you have a clean install without any bugs remaining from a previous install. By all means try just clear cache and see how you go, if you seems to have lots of bugs we recommend doing a clear data and trying again.
SD VERSION IMAGE ***UPDATE NOT YET AVAILABLE this is the Alpha final version***
Download HERE
I've done the SD version a little different this time, it's as a 4gb SD image (the last partition is used as SDcard in CM7 so you can resize this partition to fill up your whole card if your card is bigger than 4gb). The image can be burn using windows Image writer or dd command in linux / OSX
The window software is available HERE.
To write the image on linux / osx do the following
WITHOUT your sd in the machine go to a terminal window and type
Code:
mount
Notice the drives that are showing they will be something like dev/sda. Now insert your SD and give it a moment to recognise it. Once again terminal type
Code:
mount
and you should have an extra device such as /dev/sdc showing which is your sdcard (it may say dev/sdc1 or something but you aren't interested in the number)
Once you have the SD device id use following code exchanging sdc for your device id
Code:
dd if=/location/of/SDfile.img of=/dev/sdc
Then sit back and wait, it will appear to be doing nothing and will take a long time but once done the command will complete and you have a nice new SD version of CM7 to run
Power off the nook, insert the sd and then power it on to enjoy your new CM7. If it done'st boot try completely powering of and ten connect power cable and wait for it to turn on and hopefully boot form SD. The first boot WILL take a few minutes. Consecutive boots will be faster

Difference
Sorry for this question. What are the differences between internal and external? Does internal completely wipe and remove all Nook software, and external only boots CM7 with the card in and boots Nook style without?
For those on Windows machines (like me!), the free Mini Partition Wizard Home Edition can be used to create the SD card partitions. In this case just make the first partition Primary and Active; that will allow it to be seen as a bootable partition.

For Internal you need to have CWM running (either from SDcard or internally) and it WILL wipe your stock setup.
External runs purely from the SDCard and will not mess with your internal data.
Remember that Celtic and I are the only ones who have tested this as of yet so there may be unfound bugs! This is Beta after all
Please report all bugs here, do not PM us. We will try to validate and then correct them.

For those on Windows machines (like me!), the free Mini Partition Wizard Home Edition can be used to create the SD card partitions. In this case just make the first partition Primary and Active; that will allow it to be seen as a bootable partition.

Yes sure just shrink the partitions a little to fit
We'll be adding a small modification to allow SDCard simulation when booting form card which will require adding a 4th partition later to act as the SDCard
Just thought to release as was to get it to everyone
I take it there is a way to go back to stock 1.4.0 just in case?
Unit is rebooting into cm7 as we speak. Looking great, speed is awesome. Great job guys.

Yes you can flash a stock image the same way
did internal version. Downloaded to PC, unpacked, copied directly to directory via usb mount, restored. The restore went fast, and the initial boot-up was faster than my G2's backup restores...lol Connected to wifi, signed in, and up and running.. Fantastic!!! kudos!! and i used the "Thank You" button so i'm not thanking you in this reply...<snicker> Over all, everything done in less than 5 minutes. Now to tweak/customize/play with.
For those of us who don't know/have ubuntu, can you point to a good resource/post for creating the SD card under Windows 7 to run the SD card version of CM7?
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure Clockworkmod makes it as standard, as long as you have clockworkmod installed you should be able to just create the folders and drop your files in, do a backup from CWM and the folder should appear anyway
Thanks man. downloading sd release now. this doesn't affect the stock NT rom, right? the SD release ofc.
Celtic,
You may want to mention that the user may need to eject/reinsert the SD card for CWM recovery to recognize it.
Thanks for the good work!

After it's first boot it's a lot quicker than stock
In fact I think even the SD version is faster than stock, stock really is poor!
Just an FYI to everyone. We mounted the internal B&N partition (the 11 GB that used to locked out) to /data/media and the 1GB you used to have access to to /mnt/media.
Both fully rw!
Holy **** people!! 200 downloads already and only 20 of clicks of thanks on the first thread :s
I think my server bandwidth is going to get a hammering, I best check it's ok!
Sorry for the basic question, but when we go to CWM -> Advanced restore -> NTCM7, do we want to restore boot? system? data? cache? sd-ext? all?
Thanks!

PLEASE READ: An Introduction to Android Rooting, Custom Recoveries, and Custom ROMs

Okay, this thread is going to have A TON of info. I recommend that if you are new to Android you read this thread and any questions you have I will attempt to answer to the best of my knowledge or I'm sure someone else will.
It is, in my opinion, imperative that you understand the material of this post prior to playing around with your new Android device. Much of this topic is general purpose, i.e. it could apply to any Android device but I will be making specific references for the Nook Tablet.
Root: The Android OS is a linux based OS. Thus "root access" is a term that signifies full access to the file system of the OS. Consider root access similar to "administrative privileges" on Windows. An even more extreme analogy may be if you were to buy a Windows computer and find that you only had access to "My Documents;" the Android equivalent would be buying a device like the Nook Tablet (or pretty much any other android device) and not having root access.
Root for the Nook Tablet: We have various methods for rooting the Nook Tablet. The best method, IMO, is the sdcard method found here. This method will allow you to create an external microSD card that allows you to boot into a custom recovery (more on this later) and run a script which will get you "root access."
Why do I want root?: Root access allows you to do things you otherwise would not be able to do. Installing google apps is probably the biggest reason, but other reasons include making certain modifications to the device to allow you to do more "stuff." Another big reason is to install indirect's app which will allow you to flash (fancy word for install) a custom recovery to the internal memory of the Nook. He even has an app that will allow you to unroot the device and restore it to stock (I believe as of this post the unroot app only supports the 16GB model).
Custom Recovery? What's that?: A custom recovery is, IMO, the number 1 priority when tinkering with Android. The first instance of a custom recovery you may encounter is the one I mentioned previously, the sdcard version. I actually have a card that I keep imaged with the custom recovery (Clockworkmod Recovery) ready to go should I ever need it.
Within Clockworkmod Recovery or any other custom recovery, you will be able to do a few things: install zip files, make a backup of your current OS (and restore said backups), wipe data/cache. The key here, as with a lot of this stuff, is DO NOT START SELECTING THINGS YOU DO NOT FULLY UNDERSTAND. For some reason a lot of users have a habit of wiping system and other things within CWM thus resulting in broken partitions and other issues. Follow directions. If you are unsure of something, ask a question.
Custom ROM: ROM stands for Read Only Memory. It is the operating system of Android that is on your device. The stock ROM that comes with the device, a modified version of Android by B&N is very restricting. Getting root access on this rom will open up many options for users. However, as Android is open source, we have the ability to create custom ROMs that provide even more freedom and a "pure" Android experience.
These ROMs almost always come "rooted" as well. What I mean by this is that a developer could create a ROM that does not allow the user root access. In fact, the newest policy of Cyanogenmod (a very popular and hard working ROM development team) is that ROMs will no longer come "rooted" by default. Users will have to toggle root access in settings.
Custom roms are flashed (installed) via a custom recovery like Clockworkmod Recovery. Basically, if you have CWM on your external sdcard or flashed internally, you can store the ROM zip file on your internal memory (or the external card should you choose), boot into recovery, flash the ROM and voila you will be ready to boot into a new OS (you should probably wipe data/cache as well if its a new ROM). I must stress here that it is IMPERATIVE that you make a backup of your current OS prior to installing a new ROM. This way, you can restore your previous setup should you not like the new one or if there are any issues with the new one.
Boot from sdcard? Yes we are quite lucky with the Nook such that we can boot from the external sdcard. I have already mentioned booting into CWM from sdcard but we even have the benefit of booting into a custom ROM (CM7 only currently) from external sdcard. What this means is that you leave the internal OS completely intact. This would thus allow "dual booting" i.e. you can boot into internal or boot from external.
Back to stock: Getting back to stock is incredibly easy with the Nook Tablet. I've done it myself a few times on two devices for various reasons. Many people are afraid to root or flash custom ROMs because it voids the warranty. While true, if you are able to return the device to stock conditions, B&N has no way of knowing that the device has been tinkered with and thus the Warranty remains intact.
To wrap this up, I must stress how important it is that you read, read, read and read more when doing this stuff. Follow directions to the T. Ask questions if you aren't sure about something. I know this is a long post as well but I can't stress how important it is that users understand the information I have put forth here when rooting and/or flashing custom ROMs.
Also, if someone wants to add benefits to why rooting the stock OS is useful please feel free to do so (I admittedly have little experience with the B&N stock OS and thus am not 100% positive of the benefits of rooting the B&N stock OS).

The Download link for the Cyanogen Mod 7 Final Image is down?
I would like to download the latest Cyanogen Mod 7 Final Image, so I found this webpage containing the latest version of this Image =
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826
and tried to download the SD card for the Nook Tablet..
BUT the link to the SD Card for the Nook Tablet appears to be dead..at the very least, it's not working properly.
Please, can someone direct me to a proper link to download the correct Cyanogen Mod 7 Final Image for the 16 gig Nook Tablet ?
Thanks!
I'd check/ask in the thread for that rom.
I tried to make a similiar comment on that thread, however; I recieved a notice that since I was new here, I'm not allowed to post a comment on that development thread.
That is why I'm making a similiar request on this thread.
All I'm attempting to do at this point is simply download the correct Cyanogen Mod 7 Final Image, so, I'm requesting help in that regard.
Thanks again~
um, i have a request. could you please post your questions in the 'Q&A' section.

thx.

now having 'asked nice' for that... i have another link. imho, @succulent has a better version of the cm7 internal for 16GB. it is here.

thank you, "old fart"..
Please, accept my apologies for posting on an incorrect thread.. I honestly thought that I was posting on a thread that might be able to help.
Also, thank you for posting a webpage that contains the correct Cyanogen Mod 7 Image. In regard to this better Build of the Cyanogen Mod 7 for the Nook Tablet..I admit that I'm a real noobie, I'm simply asking because I don't know.
Is the Cyanogen Mod 7 Image in the Mediafire Folder listed on that webpage ?
If so, I've opened that Mediafire folder ..this folder contains a long list of various files.. which is the correct file that I should download, and write to my sd card ?
Thank you much for your help in answering my questions~
Please take it to another thread~

Installing/Flashing CWM on Rooted 1.4.0 NT w/ Blocked OTA Updates
Gents,
I stepped away from the world of the Nook Tablet over the last 5-6 months in order to focus on other Android devices.
Last time I was involved with the NT, I rooted my son's NT with Indirect's 'Full Root (v1.4.0) w/ Blocked OTAs w/ ZergRush exploit' Thread.
From what it seems, there have been a few changes, including obtaining root access for NT's that have 1.4.1+ through the SDCard boot method.
Quick question:
I want to load a custom recovery on my son's NT, such as Xionia or CWM. The root via SDCard method includes this as part of the overall root method.
Is there a preferred way that I can install/flash custom recovery on my son's NT, knowing that I have a rooted 1.4.0 NT Blocked OTA updates?
Just curious.
Thank you,
BJ.
Anyone?

I have a preference for the internal method. Plug in things are sometimes troublesome for me.
LOL! Well that's not exactly what I was asking however. As I stated, I currently have a rooted Nook Tablet (1.4.0) with Blocked OTA Updates (I used the original method from November 2011).
I am not interested in loading any kind of Custom ROMs at this time, but I do wish to add CWM or some other kind of custom recovery to my son's Nook Tablet.
Is there a recommended method to do this, without going through a re-rooting process with the 'Boot from SDCard method'?
Thanks,
BJ.
Anyone?

Search on Nook Recovery Flasher.apk and see if that app will meet your need. I believe it was created by Indirect.
Aaah ok will do. Thank you!!!!
Nook won't boot with CWM on card
Guys, am I the only one having this problem or are there others?
I've read and clearly understand the procedure to root my Nook Tablet. The problem is that no matter what I do, any time an SD card with a bootable CWM is inserted, the Nook simply refuses to start. Removing the card or for that matter replacing it with any other card that does NOT have a bootable CWM fixes the problem. It'll even boot and run the pseudo-root ROM that runs off the SDCard without actually rooting the tablet.
I've tested this with many cards and with several different ways to prepare it, and the end result is always the same regardless of what mode the Nook is in. I'm thinking that if somehow I'm not preparing the card correctly, then wouldn't the tablet simply boot up normally as it does with any other card that has no bootable CWM in it?
Since I bought my tablet at about the end of August 2012, I'm thinking B&N put something in the stock ROM to detect any other recovery and stop cold if that's what it finds. I say this because the problem is only with bootable recoveries, any bootable non-recovery works OK.
Any ideas??

Try powering off, inserting your bootable SD card in the tablet, then plugging the B&N USB cable into your tablet. Some tablets (and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it) will only boot from the external card if they detect the USB cable.

Steve
Post to Q&A and someone will sort you out.
The OP mentioned that he only dual boot bootable Cyanogenmod image is CM7. Is there a reason why CM10 is not possible? It seems the N2A people are advertising that capability on their website. I would like to be able to do that myself if possible.

[Q] What is the most stable non-Stock ROM for the NT8?

First -
I'm new to Nook ROM development. I have an Android mobile phone onto which I've loaded several ROMs over the past couple of years...bricked on trying to flash a stock upgrade.
I acquired this Nook Tablet (8gb version) and found this XDA forum for the device. Maybe it's because the Nook is one of just a few tablet versions, but this development thread - to me - is all over the place. I can't seem to find a unifying thread that explains all the ROMs available, along with the pros/cons, etc. of each.
What would be a good stable ROM (no stock) for the Nook Tablet 8GB?
I see that we have CM7, 9, and 10. And there seem to be several varieties of each - with various tweaks, nips, and tucks.
Any insights?
Thank you,
Dan

And as with every other one of these threads, it will be locked and edited. This question is not allowed due to 10 different people giving 10 different answers.
My personal experience is that CM7 currently has the least number of glitches. CM 7 and CM 9 are no longer in development so what you see is what you get. CM10 has come a long way and some people can daily drive it and others(myself 1 of those people) can't due to its quirks. Read, read and read some more and make your own informed decision.

So you're saying there are that many ROMs?
The only reason I posted this question was because I've read, re-read, and read some more. And I still can't make heads or tails of which ROMs are in development, which CM10 is the most current, which is the most stable, etc.
And as for this thread being locked and edited - What is the "Questions" section for if not to ask questions?

It's too much of an open ended opinion based question and the moderators just don't like it being asked. I however do understand the validity of it.
CM 10 there are only 2 main ones right now the SGT7 and Chrmhoffmann CM 10 currently 0.6 SGT7 is based off of chrmhoffmanns work with some add-ons.

Honestly don't rule out CM7. I love its stability and after modifying build.prop the fact it runs pretty much everything. Make it easy on yourself and load all of them on SD cards and compare them to find the best for you.

You can use the info and tools posted here to build a SD card version of Chrmhoffmann's CM10 (and/or CM9) and try them out to see if their performance fit your need.
I've been using Chrmhoffmann's CM10 v0.06 off a SDcard and am quite happy with it (although some games like Temple Run currently don't work with it). Chrmhoffmann's CM9 v0.05.3 is also very good.

Here the process I follow to build a CM10 SD card for my 16GB Nook Tablet:
Create 3 partitions using MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition per the instructions in step #1 here: sdcard, system, and data. Make sure that you set the partition ID type for the sdcard partition to 0x0C FAT32 LBA and set its Active flag, otherwise the SDcard will not be bootable. Once this is done, the sdcard partition should appear as a (read/write accessible) drive under Windows. (Note that you can adjust the suggested sizes of the partitions upward to fill up the entire SDcard).
Copy the following files from cm10-acclaim-0.06_sd_hd_10_11.zip (obtained here) to the sdcard partition: boot.img (in folder p2), flashing_boot.img, MLO, recovery.img, u-boot.bin.
Replace updater-script in cm10-acclaim-0.06-full-of-bugs (in folder META-INF\com\google\android) with the updater-script from cm10-acclaim-0.06_sd_hd_10_11.zip (in folder p2).
Replace updater-script in gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip (in folder META-INF\com\google\android) with the updater-script from gapps-jb-20120726_sd_hd.zip (obtained here) (in folder p2).
Copy to the sdcard partition cm10-acclaim-0.06-full-of-bugs and gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip with the replacement updater-scripts files (which cause the CM10 ROM and JellyBean Google apps to be installed on the SDcard rather than on your NT itself).
You should now have a bootable SD card with 7 files on it, ready for the 2nd phase of the SDcard build described in step #4 here.
A few additional points worth noting in building CMx on SD card:
The NT OMAP3 SD boot process is very finicky about the SDcard boot-partition's setup. Fortunately MiniTool Partition Wizard generally does very good job in creating a FAT32 boot-partition with the expected cylinder/sector geometry and alignment, especially from scratch (i.e., on a SD card with no existing partition on it). So if an SD card repeatedly fails to boot it's best to delete all the partitions and start over fresh.
I have found it helps to first copy the MLO and u-boot files then the rest of the files, since MLO and u-boot are to be loaded first, and it appears that OMAP only scans the first few entries of the partition-table to look for these two files.
If your NT is like mine, you will have to plug in the powered USB cable to the NT in its power-off state -- in order for the NT to boot from the SDcard.
Generally the lower rating (and also cheaper) class 4 SD cards are more suitable for running a ROM than the higher classes 6 and 10 cards (since the latter are optimized for large & sequential block read/write at the expense of random read/write). So if you happen to use a class 10 or 6 card and your apps frequently crash or freeze, consider switching to a lower class SD card.
most stable?
the CM7 versions ARE the most stable versions- currently
all the cm10/cm9's they all have the same "bugs" - mostly random reboot/lockup problems- we fix this one problem and cm10 would be golden on our NT's
that said, it's weird, sometimes i can go Days without having to reboot the system using CM10, other times, the same rom, just a fresh boot, with lockup with the black screen forcing a reboot, in minutes-hell i've had it lockup to black screen/forcing a reboot less than a minute after bootup.

Thank you for this information.
I am going to try CM7 via SD card to see how it performs.
Right now, I have the Stock 1.4.2 ROM, rooted, with CWM 5.0.2.8 installed (via ADB push) - no Cyanoboot loaded at all. I just boot into recovery via the normal method.
I'm wondering if I can just install a CM7 zip via CWM without Cyanoboot...
Any thoughts?
On all cm10 roms i have experienced download problems where after i few minutes i download something and it finishes but still says in progress and then everyhting freezes

My experience has been the opposite: my CM7 would get into a boot-loop state every couple of months, whereas CM9 (v0.05.3) and CM10 (v0.06) have been pretty solid.

I created the card, popped it into the Nook, plugged it into the USB port, and Cyanoboot came up. I didn't stop it, and the Nook booted to a blank screen.
Is there something I need to do in Cyanoboot? Do I just let it run and wait?
I selected "SDC Boot" and it still went to a blank screen.
Thanks,
Dan
Thread closed. Normally it doesn't take this long but missed this thread in skimming through.
As has already been said at the start of this thread "best" or "most stable" ROM question threads are not allowed due to the fact everyone has their own opinion and it's probably a good thing this has had a number of replies already as it's shown how subjective it can be with one person saying CM7 is the most stable then someone finding the opposite. Believe it or not devices are unique and react differently to ROM's and kernels so the only way to know the answer to your question is to try them all or the one's that have the features you like. We're all here to learn about our devices and trial and error is the best way to learn
