PLEASE READ: An Introduction to Android Rooting, Custom Recoveries, and Custom ROMs - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Okay, this thread is going to have A TON of info. I recommend that if you are new to Android you read this thread and any questions you have I will attempt to answer to the best of my knowledge or I'm sure someone else will.
It is, in my opinion, imperative that you understand the material of this post prior to playing around with your new Android device. Much of this topic is general purpose, i.e. it could apply to any Android device but I will be making specific references for the Nook Tablet.
Root: The Android OS is a linux based OS. Thus "root access" is a term that signifies full access to the file system of the OS. Consider root access similar to "administrative privileges" on Windows. An even more extreme analogy may be if you were to buy a Windows computer and find that you only had access to "My Documents;" the Android equivalent would be buying a device like the Nook Tablet (or pretty much any other android device) and not having root access.
Root for the Nook Tablet: We have various methods for rooting the Nook Tablet. The best method, IMO, is the sdcard method found here. This method will allow you to create an external microSD card that allows you to boot into a custom recovery (more on this later) and run a script which will get you "root access."
Why do I want root?: Root access allows you to do things you otherwise would not be able to do. Installing google apps is probably the biggest reason, but other reasons include making certain modifications to the device to allow you to do more "stuff." Another big reason is to install indirect's app which will allow you to flash (fancy word for install) a custom recovery to the internal memory of the Nook. He even has an app that will allow you to unroot the device and restore it to stock (I believe as of this post the unroot app only supports the 16GB model).
Custom Recovery? What's that?: A custom recovery is, IMO, the number 1 priority when tinkering with Android. The first instance of a custom recovery you may encounter is the one I mentioned previously, the sdcard version. I actually have a card that I keep imaged with the custom recovery (Clockworkmod Recovery) ready to go should I ever need it.
Within Clockworkmod Recovery or any other custom recovery, you will be able to do a few things: install zip files, make a backup of your current OS (and restore said backups), wipe data/cache. The key here, as with a lot of this stuff, is DO NOT START SELECTING THINGS YOU DO NOT FULLY UNDERSTAND. For some reason a lot of users have a habit of wiping system and other things within CWM thus resulting in broken partitions and other issues. Follow directions. If you are unsure of something, ask a question.
Custom ROM: ROM stands for Read Only Memory. It is the operating system of Android that is on your device. The stock ROM that comes with the device, a modified version of Android by B&N is very restricting. Getting root access on this rom will open up many options for users. However, as Android is open source, we have the ability to create custom ROMs that provide even more freedom and a "pure" Android experience.
These ROMs almost always come "rooted" as well. What I mean by this is that a developer could create a ROM that does not allow the user root access. In fact, the newest policy of Cyanogenmod (a very popular and hard working ROM development team) is that ROMs will no longer come "rooted" by default. Users will have to toggle root access in settings.
Custom roms are flashed (installed) via a custom recovery like Clockworkmod Recovery. Basically, if you have CWM on your external sdcard or flashed internally, you can store the ROM zip file on your internal memory (or the external card should you choose), boot into recovery, flash the ROM and voila you will be ready to boot into a new OS (you should probably wipe data/cache as well if its a new ROM). I must stress here that it is IMPERATIVE that you make a backup of your current OS prior to installing a new ROM. This way, you can restore your previous setup should you not like the new one or if there are any issues with the new one.
Boot from sdcard? Yes we are quite lucky with the Nook such that we can boot from the external sdcard. I have already mentioned booting into CWM from sdcard but we even have the benefit of booting into a custom ROM (CM7 only currently) from external sdcard. What this means is that you leave the internal OS completely intact. This would thus allow "dual booting" i.e. you can boot into internal or boot from external.
Back to stock: Getting back to stock is incredibly easy with the Nook Tablet. I've done it myself a few times on two devices for various reasons. Many people are afraid to root or flash custom ROMs because it voids the warranty. While true, if you are able to return the device to stock conditions, B&N has no way of knowing that the device has been tinkered with and thus the Warranty remains intact.
To wrap this up, I must stress how important it is that you read, read, read and read more when doing this stuff. Follow directions to the T. Ask questions if you aren't sure about something. I know this is a long post as well but I can't stress how important it is that users understand the information I have put forth here when rooting and/or flashing custom ROMs.
Also, if someone wants to add benefits to why rooting the stock OS is useful please feel free to do so (I admittedly have little experience with the B&N stock OS and thus am not 100% positive of the benefits of rooting the B&N stock OS).

The Download link for the Cyanogen Mod 7 Final Image is down?
I would like to download the latest Cyanogen Mod 7 Final Image, so I found this webpage containing the latest version of this Image =
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826
and tried to download the SD card for the Nook Tablet..
BUT the link to the SD Card for the Nook Tablet appears to be dead..at the very least, it's not working properly.
Please, can someone direct me to a proper link to download the correct Cyanogen Mod 7 Final Image for the 16 gig Nook Tablet ?
Thanks!

I'd check/ask in the thread for that rom.

I tried to make a similiar comment on that thread, however; I recieved a notice that since I was new here, I'm not allowed to post a comment on that development thread.
That is why I'm making a similiar request on this thread.
All I'm attempting to do at this point is simply download the correct Cyanogen Mod 7 Final Image, so, I'm requesting help in that regard.
Thanks again~

um, i have a request. could you please post your questions in the 'Q&A' section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1508
thx.
.
now having 'asked nice' for that... i have another link. imho, @succulent has a better version of the cm7 internal for 16GB. it is here.
http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/06/12/cm7-2-rc1-build-20120612/#more-739

thank you, "old fart"..
Please, accept my apologies for posting on an incorrect thread.. I honestly thought that I was posting on a thread that might be able to help.
Also, thank you for posting a webpage that contains the correct Cyanogen Mod 7 Image. In regard to this better Build of the Cyanogen Mod 7 for the Nook Tablet..I admit that I'm a real noobie, I'm simply asking because I don't know.
Is the Cyanogen Mod 7 Image in the Mediafire Folder listed on that webpage ?
If so, I've opened that Mediafire folder ..this folder contains a long list of various files.. which is the correct file that I should download, and write to my sd card ?
Thank you much for your help in answering my questions~

Please take it to another thread~

Installing/Flashing CWM on Rooted 1.4.0 NT w/ Blocked OTA Updates
Gents,
I stepped away from the world of the Nook Tablet over the last 5-6 months in order to focus on other Android devices.
Last time I was involved with the NT, I rooted my son's NT with Indirect's 'Full Root (v1.4.0) w/ Blocked OTAs w/ ZergRush exploit' Thread.
From what it seems, there have been a few changes, including obtaining root access for NT's that have 1.4.1+ through the SDCard boot method.
Quick question:
I want to load a custom recovery on my son's NT, such as Xionia or CWM. The root via SDCard method includes this as part of the overall root method.
Is there a preferred way that I can install/flash custom recovery on my son's NT, knowing that I have a rooted 1.4.0 NT Blocked OTA updates?
Just curious.
Thank you,
BJ.

Anyone?

I have a preference for the internal method. Plug in things are sometimes troublesome for me.

LOL! Well that's not exactly what I was asking however. As I stated, I currently have a rooted Nook Tablet (1.4.0) with Blocked OTA Updates (I used the original method from November 2011).
I am not interested in loading any kind of Custom ROMs at this time, but I do wish to add CWM or some other kind of custom recovery to my son's Nook Tablet.
Is there a recommended method to do this, without going through a re-rooting process with the 'Boot from SDCard method'?
Thanks,
BJ.

Anyone?

Nook RecoveryFlasher.apk
Search on Nook Recovery Flasher.apk and see if that app will meet your need. I believe it was created by Indirect.

Aaah ok will do. Thank you!!!!

Nook won't boot with CWM on card
Guys, am I the only one having this problem or are there others?
I've read and clearly understand the procedure to root my Nook Tablet. The problem is that no matter what I do, any time an SD card with a bootable CWM is inserted, the Nook simply refuses to start. Removing the card or for that matter replacing it with any other card that does NOT have a bootable CWM fixes the problem. It'll even boot and run the pseudo-root ROM that runs off the SDCard without actually rooting the tablet.
I've tested this with many cards and with several different ways to prepare it, and the end result is always the same regardless of what mode the Nook is in. I'm thinking that if somehow I'm not preparing the card correctly, then wouldn't the tablet simply boot up normally as it does with any other card that has no bootable CWM in it?
Since I bought my tablet at about the end of August 2012, I'm thinking B&N put something in the stock ROM to detect any other recovery and stop cold if that's what it finds. I say this because the problem is only with bootable recoveries, any bootable non-recovery works OK.
Any ideas??

Try powering off, inserting your bootable SD card in the tablet, then plugging the B&N USB cable into your tablet. Some tablets (and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it) will only boot from the external card if they detect the USB cable.

Steve

Post to Q&A and someone will sort you out.

The OP mentioned that he only dual boot bootable Cyanogenmod image is CM7. Is there a reason why CM10 is not possible? It seems the N2A people are advertising that capability on their website. I would like to be able to do that myself if possible.

I don't know what the Nook "looks like" after you do it. Is it a Nook with more features (i.e., still a reader, but more)? Is it a tablet computer and not reader-centric any more? Is it one thing if run from the card and still Nook if run without the card? What?
And guide writer, whoever you turn out to be, you will have more friends than you know what to do with.

DISCLAIMER: this is based on my limited understanding as a noob. It may be missing in some details, but as "a general idea", it should be fine.
I cant give you an efficient walkthrough of the "how-to"s but I'll give an overview so you can know what your dealing with. The "how-to"s are already existing all over xda, theyre just intimidating when you dont know what they mean and they appear like an intermingled mess.
As I see it there are basically three different paths for hacking your Nook. First you have to decide which one you want to try, narrow it down to a particular ROM or build, then use that particular "how-to". Then its not so bad.
1. Root the original B&N software, keeping the e-reader centric OS in tact,
adding the ability to install other android features such as the Android
Market (i.e all sorts of apps like youtube, etc) as well as the ability to
overclock your processor (speed up the device). All the threads with "Auto-
nooter" in the title refer to this method.
2. Run a bootable version of android via an SD card. This puts a full
version of Android OS like Froyo (2.2) or Honycomb (3.0) on an SD card
which you can then put in the Nook. Turn it on and you boot into a full
Android experience. You will not have the B&N e-reader software but you can
install the Nook app from the market and sync your B&N purchases (its not
as fancy, but it gets the job done). This is one of the easier methods and it is
also nice to be able to take the SD card out anytime and boot into your
original device untouched. All the threads with "Bootable, SD card, SD
bootable, etc" refer to this.
3. The third method is EMMC. This, like the second method, replaces the B&N e-
reader software, but the difference is it actually installs an Android system
onto the Nooks internal hardware instead of running off an SD card. For this
you use ClockworkMod and the process isnt that intimidating once you
actually get started and just follow the instructions. (took me two weeks to
face it. once i did it was fairly straight forward).
In my opinion each has its pros and cons, but these are mostly due to my personal preferences. I dont have so much know-how so firstly I want things to be retard proof "one-click" simple. Others may not have this criteria.
I personally like bootable SDs but for me the only real draw back is that the ROM i prefer the most is not available as a bootable SD (at least not yet... ) (mad-murdock has done a great job http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002000)
If you want me to point you in any particular direction (a how-to or a ROM, etc) based on my limited experience as a noob, just PM me. I'll write back according to what I may have learned. Just dont bother asking about the first method, it seemed to complicated to get the market working so I never tried it.

Booting into CWR from a running ROM (not bootable SD card)
This seems as a place as any to ask this question, I can not get my Nook, running CM7 stable with Dalingrens 4/13a OC kernel, to go into Recovery from ROM manager. I have RM installed, 3.0.1.0 and when I hold the power button down and select "Reboot" into Recovery ---- it reboots and comes right back to the ROM. Now on another site someone claims their Nook will boot right into Recovery no problem. Am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated.
Ronin
P.S. I have a bootable SD set aside to flash, but it is a pain vs just going str8 to CWR without switching SD cards.
http://db.tt/oFLnqic
Could the OP maybe change the title a bit and add some common issues so far that can be fixed?
I can dig up how to do them, but the things I'm talking about are:
wifi:
- if you've ever touched airplane mode, edit the sql file
- if you're running the latest kernel, try to "forget" your networks, then try again
- enable ad-hoc
app won't work:
- boot into CWR, fix permissions
- set proper wallpapers
- just because it comes in zip format doesn't mean to use CWR!
system tweaks:
- getting hulu to work
- custom boot animation
- flashing new kernels
There just seems to be a lot of things that need to be seen by others that cannot unless they read every thread (most don't, resulting in a lot of multiple posts).

hey quinxy. Can you update your amazing guide to reflect that new nooks should have their partitions redone to the old fashion way to ensure successful rom loading without an sd card?
Remove the Good Housekeeping sample cookbook without root!
First, follow the instructions below to make a bootable ClockworkMod SD card :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=987735
After that's done, copy the file below to the root directory of the same SD card. DO NOT UNZIP! Allow the Nook to boot into CWM and install the zip from the SD card. Once it's done, power off the Nook, remove the SD card, and boot normally. Voila! No more annoying cookbook sample that was previously un-deletable without root! Enjoy!
Fixing SD card format problems after using image burn or creating a bootable SD
I get this question all the time in the threads for bootable SD cards.
"When i put my bootable 8 gb SD card in my PC it shows only 142mb of space even after I format it. HELP!!"
If you use image burn to create a bootable SD card and then later you want to clean the card off and reformat it read this.
Use the program SDFormat v3 and make sure to click options : Format size adjustment : ON . This has worked for me when a nook image SD or partition was gooked up and I needed to clean the card and fresh format it. Also, use an external card reader/writer. Doing image burn or format on the PC's built-in SD card slot usually does not work well.
In SDFormatter under the Format Options dropdown menu is a second menu called “format size adjustment” that asks if you want to try to increase the amount of space on your SD card or not. Turning this option on will allow you to use the maximum space possible on your SD card. Once you have made your selection, click OK.."
Using SDformatter with Format size adjustment : ON will ignor any partitions like your 140mb boot partitions and create one contiguous Fat32 partition using all of your SD card. If you don't do it that way, your 16gb SD card will look like a 140mb SD card when you format it after you have put a boot image on it
See this link for more details and to download the SD Format software for Windows.

Can the OP update the first page please?! It's helpful, but there's been many advances since February...
Manual Neuter
I just purchased a nook color, and it came with 1.2 installed. While Nueter, Auto-nueter and Super-nueter all appear to have been good solutions, I too concur that the OP should be updated. Manual-nueter seems to be the rooting direction I'm headed in.
Quinxy site is down
I just got my Nook. So far, after browsing many threads, I can't even find out where to start from. Looks like quinxy had written some instructions for noobs but his site is down, so I can't read those. Any other places I can look on XDA for answers? I'm specifically interested in using CM7 but need to root first I guess... Any help would be appreciated.

CM7 is a custom ROM that is already rooted. You have that option or rooting the stock ROM which will allow you to keep the NC features but add the Android Market. You don't do both. If you decide you want to go with CM7 you can either replace the internal stock ROM with CM7 or you can put CM7 on an SD card and boot from it when you wish. One caveat with the last option is constantly removing and replacing the SD card may ultimately trash the SD reader slot on your Nook.
You need to make decisions before you starting researching how to do it.

One more thing to look into, you probably have a newer Nook (with the blue dot box) if you want to go eMMC with cm7,then a repartition of the internal partitions is required. I had an older one from this March and never had to do it. But I most definitely recommend eMMC, you can even dualboot with fattires new uboot. The newer nightlies (currently stuck @177) even have OC built-in.

Is this method safe to Root a Nook Tablet 1.41?

Yes, I've been all over these (awesome ) forums, reading and learning on how to root my new nook tablet (which I got for 224.99 btw XD )
I've been learning from this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583&page=18
I just want to make sure that this is a known and safe method for me to use, it seemed too easy to be true...which is why I am here posting and asking about. I apologize if I am in the wrong place >.< I do hope I am in the right spot.
I appreciate any help, and look foreword to learning and getting to know the forums here.
Cheers!
Easy = Yes
Safe = Yes
Reliable = Not really
IMHO You would be better off to revert your 1.4.1 to 1.4.0 using AdamOutler's Magic SD Card and then Rooting.
At that point you can either use the method in the thread you linked OR the original Indirect Root method.
If you are on windows and have never had an android device hooked up to that computer the original method will work easily. The biggest issue it faces is the troubleshooting of the drivers when another Android device was used on the PC previously. There is however plenty of information available to help if you get stuck. The advantage of this method is it will allow you to select an alternate launcher, de-bloat B&N apps and install the OTA block. You MUST be on 1.4.0 to use this method.
The only advantage to the SD card root is that it will also help you create a ClockWorkMod (CWM) bootable SD Card. The disadvantages are you will need to install the OTA block seperatly, if you try it on 1.4.1 there are additional hoops to jump through to get side-loading supported, the files you should use are NOT in the OP and because the files have been revised several times the instructions have become convoluted. If you have read through that entire thread and are comfortable that you have pieced together all the information then you will be fine using that method.
Good luck and welcome!

NT8 boot ONLY via SDCard - RESOLVED!

This issue was resolved by Meghd00t's new REPART.IMG file. See this post on that thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26060323&postcount=151cool:
I have the 8gb model Nook Tablet and (mistakenly) tried to flash CWM & CM7a to the EMMC of my tablet. At that time, there were no warnings about how the internal flash version would brick the NT8.
Now, my tablet will not boot to ANYTHING on the internal memory. I do NOT get the stock "reset" warnings - or even a flash of light. No matter how I try to boot it (with or without cable, with or without the Nook button) or how long I hold the buttons down, it still remains with a BLACK SCREEN.
However, the SDCard will boot properly.
I followed the instructions on this thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1515788) precisely to reset the BootData. I did NOT receive any errors. However, it still will not boot internally.
I then tried sigmabeta's process to flash CM9 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25661314) to the internal emmc (which is supposed to work on NT8). The flash process (via SD/CWM) went properly and I did not receive any errors. However, I still cannot get anything to boot (except my SDCards).
If I put my CM7a (bootable) SDCard (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826) into the NT8, it boots and runs great! Likewise meghd00t's recovery/CWM sdcard boots and runs properly.
I can do ADB & FASTBOOT and I have even done the dd to download my partitions (for backup) and then dd copies from online onto the device's partitions. Still no joy.
However, even after dd'ing a downloaded copy of p5 to the device, ADB still reports my TRUE serial number? It seems that the dd to part5 did not take?
The only other thing that I have found, that seems significant, is the fact that when I am in CWM, I cannot mount the EMMC. I can ADB/shell into the device but that did not allow me to mount the emmc either.
Any ideas how I can get this thing to boot internally? How can I force the device to mount the emmc?

Not sure that I have tried ALL of them, that is why I am still searching. Also, people come up with new ideas that have not previously been published.
Thanks for all YOUR help. Especially the dd to fix bootdata.
Sure wish someone would come up with a solution for this problem. There seems to be quite a few of us who are looking for answers.

I have been reading for a while and I didn’t want to the answer because the answers are already in the Dev. area. I rather have people do some research and learn to solve their own problem rather than listen to someone else that might misled to do something even worse.
NT already has a recovery in place; factory restores (eight failed boot method). Most people do not know this and try something in an environment that they are not familiar with, Ubuntu. If you are using Windows, then you can resolve it in Windows. You do not need to repartition, format, or delete partitions. I have learned that many people like to format things apparently.
The most common problem seems to be; my NT does not turn on or my nook only boot with sdcard. It is not technically true; your NT actually turns on. The backlight just doesn’t turn on because you format/replace the x-loader/bootloader. X-loader loads the bootloader. You know the bootloader work if you see the “n” logo screen. If your NT restart after the "n" logo screen, it mean bad recovery.img/boot.img.
How did this happen? You flash the wrong MLO file to your x-loader, you used an old CWM (experimental one) and formatted your sdcard or you like to format things.
How do I resolve this? First thing is to make a proper CWM sdcard, one with proper partition table. You can compile your own CWM recovery when you compile CM7. Second, flash stock 1.4.2 rom, which contain the latest x-loader, bootloader, boot, and recovery files that works on both 8GB/16GB NT. This will restore your NT to stock android gingerbread.
If you happen to format the rom partition, you need to restore it with a backup and perform the eight failed boot method. This will restore your proper rom partition data along with the stock android. It is all in my thread in the Dev. area.
If you happen to screw up your partition table, obviously this will not help you until you fix your partition table.

Thanks for the info. I do appreciate it and I will be trying some of your suggestions later today when I get home.
One problem (that seems to be easing up a bit) is the fact that few posters distinguish WHICH version of the NT that they are working with. The NT16 "solutions" became the NT8 "problems." It would be great if everyone posted WHICH version they have.
The other issue is (as you stated) when you follow a guide to fix an issue, it CAN mess up your device even worse that it was. Then, you have TWO issues to deal with - rather than just one as before. I am afraid that is where I am now.
One question: You mention "compiling" CWM. Are you referring to the technical term of compiling code into an executible? Or, are you simply referring to the process of putting a working image onto an SDCard? I can do the latter without issue but I have never compiled code.
I do use Ubuntu Linux so many of the Windows driver issues are moot for me. However, I do have a dual boot with XP in on the other side - just in case I need to do some Windows-only stuff.
I really appreciate the help. I am no novice but I am not a developer either. I can usually search, read, try, and work out the problems that I (and other less technical users) experience. That is what my website is all about - translating the really "tech" jargon into everyday language for non-techies to follow. But this one has stumped me (and at least a few others) for the past couple of months.

Cyanoboot, CWM 6.0.x SDcard method question

Hi, I'm just a newbie with NT as I just bought if a couple days ago.
My NT version is 16GB came with stock 1.4.1 firmware.
I have use SDCard method to root it and it's okay.
Now I want to install CM10 Hashcode rom. And I think I need CWM6.0.x to flash it. I dont want to flash anything but rom only internally, therefore I want to create CWM6.0.x recovery bootable SDCard.
In the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640958 showing the way to create CWM6.0.x bootable SDcard but require Cyanoboot installed. So it's give me new information about Cyanoboot.
I found the thread about Cyanoboot, and in OP, the instruction about create SDcard Cyanoboot require specific configuration ..etc... and I feel confuse as I dont know what I need to start from there.
So does anyone could guide me create Cyanoboot from SDcard, something like image file for Cyanoboot SDcard (and I just need to burn it directly to SDCard)???
Hope to got your help soon as I'm die to taste this new reliable rom...
Thanks and best regards!

[HOW TO] Root/Run from sd/Install CM10

I am now making post that there really shouldn't be any need for, because all that's in here is already covered elsewhere. 100% Apparently not easy enough to find for newcomers, so I'm making an attempt to help info collection.
NOTHING here is my work! All I’ve done is trying to make easy to follow instructions to other people’s hard work. Those people deserve your thanks, not me!
I’m a newbie myself and that’s why I can say that this really is very easy! If I can do it without problems, so can you! I try not to chat away too much in the instructions. Make regular searches, here or Google for more info. I found it, so surely you can too! Any questions? Well, being a noob myself I probably can't answer. Google is a very good friend of mine though...
Please do not ask questions through pm. It's better if people that know more than I do get a chance to answer them in the thread instead!
You need to know how to burn an sd image. Separate instructions to that after the other instructions if you don’t.
Step 1: Establish what it is you want to do! Choose A, B or C
A: You do not want to touch the internals of your NT but want to try CM10 anyway
B: You want to stay in the BN environment but would like to be able to install apps from elsewhere (for example Google Play Store)
C: You want to get rid of BN and install CM10 instead.
A: Run CM10 from sd card – no root required
This should work on 8GB Tablet as well as 16GB
When you boot into the card you’re running Android ICS. Remove the card and you’ll boot to internal BN operating system. (Or keep the card in, boot to Cyanoboot Menu and choose “internal boot”)
Ready-made card image download links to be found here: http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/
It’s a large download (around 500 MB), but it is a ready-made sd card image. As it says in the instructions there, you’ll more than likely want to expand the user partition to take full advantage of the card, but that’s covered in his instructions.
There are other, more manual ways to make these cards as well. Also covered both in that blog and here at XDA! Go search!
B: Root the Tablet
This works on both 8GB and 16 GB Tablet.
“Rooting” is like unlocking your device, giving you access and control over it. You’re still running BN operating system though. Several excellent root guides here on XDA.
For example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488035
Or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21275927#post21275927
The first one (Brian’s) require a 2 GB card the other one (Albert’s) just needs a very small card. (I think 128 MB would do, but I don’t have any that small to try)
Both give good instructions in their topics.
Both install gApps.
If you want to block OTA updates from BN, go to Play Store and find NT Hidden Settings. Even if it got installed with the root it’s probably not latest version and doesn’t have the Block OTA function.
C: Installing CM10 internally
***8GB owners must make sure to use ROM that works with their device!***
Since I’m a noob I look for easy way, and this is very easy and needs very little know-how!
***Warning! CWM is a very powerful tool. Do not "wander around" and "experiment" with stuff without doing proper research! Seriously! DON'T!***
1. You need a bootable CWM card. Instead of making my own I use Albert's root image from B (above) because this image includes CWM 5.x.x. I use this to flash a higher version CWM internally. I erase the zip files from the card to make room for a flashable CWM 6.x.x
2. Find a flashable CWM 6.x.x I found mine through http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640958
I use the one named "flash_cm9-10_cwm v6...." Download and copy to your sd card.
3. Boot into the sd-card and it should take you to CWM 5.x.x. environment.
I guess a backup of you current system would be a good thing (even though I admit to skipping that myself). To backup you'll probably need another card if you're using "The Albert Card" now, because I doubt it's enough room on that.
You navigate with the volume rocker, go back to previous menu with “power” and confirm choices with “n”
Choose “install zip from card” – “choose zip from card” – your CWM zip
See warning above!
4. Power off and prepare your sd card for ROM flashing. (If you’re working with just one card you will need to format it with SD Format or similar to get it back to full capacity.) Put your CM10 ROM zip and the appropriate gApps zip on the card.( It doesn’t matter if there’s other stuff on the card, so you don’t have to format it because of that!). I will not link to a specific ROM. Make your own choice but be sure it works for your model and also make sure you use the right gApps!
5. Reboot into Cyanoboot. This took me a couple of attempts to get right.
From powered down device, press power and right after that press and hold "n", You should boot into Cyanoboot and get the boot menu. Choose "Internal recovery" and you should get into new CWM
6. I don’t know how much clearing is needed, but I prefer to clear pretty much everything to make sure of a clean install. Cache and Dalvik I always clear.
***DO NOT format anything unless you knwo what you're doing! *** (See Satan's posts below)
7. Flash ROM and gApps same way as you flashed the CWM 6.x.x (install zip from card – choose zip from card) reboot and go!
How to burn an sd-image:
I use Win32Diskimager. Download link in Albert’s root topic (and numerous other places!!)
Unzip into a folder.
(I also copy my various img files to that folder to have them easily available)
No need to install, just run by doubleclicking the EXE in the folder.
Make sure the device letter really is your sd card.
Click on the blue folder and navigate to your img file, choose it and “write”.
It will take some time if it’s a large img, but that’s what the progress bar is there for, isn’t it?!
Nice work ,
But you should add 'do not format any partition ' warning. Android users coming from other devices might do this by default during flashing rom.
Almost every one with bricked tablets has tried formatting partitions.

Do not format especially the rom partition and, most critically, the factory partition which respectively contain a set of small files with device-specific unique data (not only Serial No. but also MAC address, public/private key certificates, etc.) and the backup archive copy of the same data files (/factory/romdata.zip).
Unfortunately, I've seen some "unbricking" tools (including some that are very frequently cited/recommended on these NT forums) reformat/zero-out and flash over these 2 partitions. The end result being, even in the event the "bricked" NT gets "restored to stock", depending on the specific tool used it could be carrying device-specific data of someone else's (e.g., tool developer's) NT.
EXACTLY!

Help
Im trying to single boot CM10 from sd card without touching nook os. I am using guide (CM10.0 Jellybean SDCard IMG for Nook Tablet (12/31) FINAL)
I have tried for hours using different methods also and cant even get it to boot to CM, no CM logo at all. I have a BNTV250 NT on 1.4.3. I have tried multiple sd cards, I am using a Sandisk 8gb class 6.
In a nutshell all I should have to do is
-Format the card with SD formatter,
-Extract the (Extract cm10_xxxxxx_sd_hd.img from cm10_xxxxxx_sd_hd.7z/rar)
-Use Winimage to write the image to the SD card, correct??
The Nook still refuses to boot into Cyanogen, just boots up normal every time!
same with every procedure i have tried,
Any pointers????
Have you tried putting the sd-catd in the powered down Tablet and then insert the charger cable, connected to the charger?

I've never had to do it that way myself so I really don't know. You could try pressing the "n" buttons right after the power button and holding it for a few seconds.
Actually not being able to boot into SD card easily is the reason some install internally instead.
