[Jan 7] Kubuntu for HD2 v0.1.0 [htc-msm-2.6.32 26/12/10] - HD2 Ubuntu Development

Kubuntu for the HTC HD2 version 0.1.0
This release is intended to be run via Haret from within windows mobile.
A MAGLDR version will be released as soon and problems have been ironed out.
Consider this a Technology preview and as such is not intended for daily use.
08/01/11 2:30pm GMT: Sorry for the delay in release I've had a few breakthroughs and decided to implement the changes now rather than do several releases in one week. PM me if you can host the files for me.
What is Kubuntu?
Put simply its the debian based Desktop class OS Ubuntu built with the KDE UI instead of GNOME
Whats special about this release?
Built from scratch - Using Rootstock to create a clean fresh ARM Kubuntu 10.10 rootfs.ext2 image with which to start from.
Finger friendly - Uses Kubuntu's Plasma Netbook UI tweaked in detail by me to allow for optimized touch experience without compromising on screen space.
Some examples:
Hide titlebar and menu bar on maximized windows - Menu, close and unmaximize all tucked into the top panel.
Unmaximized windows have big buttons on the titlebar.
Large fonts in menus
Easily switch between open apps - Uses Desktop Effects to zoom out and present all open windows in a sexy grid, all from a quick tap of the top panel
Better experience - Some niggles from the original Ubuntu 0.2/0.3 release have been addressed:
Better Keyboard - kvkbd - comes with Kubuntu already
Better click and hold options - Thanks to Clickity you can customize your click and hold experience
Overhaul of connectivity options - Completely rewritten connectivity scripts to include intelligent notification tray icon and messages to inform you of 3G/Wifi/USB modes and Internet connectivity. Store settings and choose what option you require on startup. All accessed from a little connectivity icon at the bottom of home screen
==Note: Not quite finished this yet, waiting till i have finished it and packaged it into an installer so HD2 Ubuntu 0.3 users can have it too before i release my kubuntu build. Fingers crossed its only an hours work away.
What Works
3G - Added system tray notification support, Showing if 3G is on and also if it is connected to internet or not.
Wifi - Uses WICD. Default network-manager almost worked, it showed available wifi points but could never complete a connection, reverted to WICD
USB Host - connect lots of different usb devices. See this for instructions
USB Network (Not been able to use internet sharing as yet but can ssh)
SMS and Phone using latest ofono 0,25-1 and Sphone 0.0.5 - no sound tho
Battery notification! - Works perfectly giving status in taskbar, Icon shows charge level, plugged and unplugged icons too.
What still does not work - Mostly Kernel related I am not working on these currently I have simply made a new filesystem see htc-linux for info.
Sound
Bluetooth
GPS
Accelerometer
Hardware buttons not functional
No Screen Rotation
Suspend/Sleep - Power management set to turn off screen after 4 mins to conserve battery. Set in Power saver mode when unplugged Performance when plugged.
Q&A Bugs issues and Workarounds
There is no keyboard on login screen and I need to enter a password i I have enabled paswordless login so just click the (>) to login.
Keyboard Closed - Click on Home at the top left and reopen kvkbd.
Press and hold does not right click - Clickity should be on the taskbar, if not open from Utilities on Home screen. You can toggle the press hold action by pressing the mouse taksbar icon repeatedly until the icon shows the required function.
Freezes -
Can happen if your running something intensive. Wait a few minutes without touching anything and often it comes back to life do not repeatedly click anything you will make it worse.
Often its just one app causing the problem. Bring up the keyboard with floating shortcut and the following shortcuts may help (Click it once and wait a mo if your system is freezing):
Ctrl + Alt + Esc - Turns the pointer into a skull and crossbones app killer, next click on the unresponsive app to kill it.
Alt + F4 or Ctrl + Esc - Normal Close.
Ctrl - Alt - Backspace - restart the x-server
Other useful keyboard shortcuts
Win + D - Go to Home/Desktop
F11 - Fullscreen App toggle, only for some programs.
Alt + Tab - Switch to previous open window
Install Instructions
Extract the linux folder to the main directory(!) of your Storage Card.
If the linux folder is not located in the main directory of the Card,it will not work.
Note: This will not touch your phone's internal memory. WinMo or other Linux/Android builds remain unchanged.
Startup Advice
1) Save all your current work and start the HaRET executable in the linux folder of your SD card to boot Linux.
2) Wait a few moments untill you see the Kubuntu login screen. Do not press anything and it will auto login after a 10 second delay.
If you accidentally click the screen you will notice the password vanish and there is no keyboard! Never fear passwordless login is enabled so just click the (>) to login.
3) Enjoy
4) Shutdown using the power icon on the top panel.

WHATS NEXT FOR HERESANDYBOY?
Working on XUBUNTU rootfs at the moment - should be speedy
Testing KUBUNTU 11.04 MOBILE currently - its no where near usable frankly may be better to wait for a proper release.
Will be keeping an eye on htc-linux for new kernel updates and Ubuntu for HD2 for improvements and fixes.

My apologies to everyone for the delay in release.. I have a few more bugs to iron out mainly performance issues and i've expanded my own software to handle network mode notifications etc even further so it should be fully comprehensive. Im also looking into modifying sphone to work better on HD2, I've already revised the icon set so the ugly black and white network signal icons are now beautiful. I will release this as soon as I am happy it runs perfectly. A couple more days and you will have all my efforts to play with! Please anyone get in touch if you can host the download for me and I will send you a copy as soon as I am ready.
The wait is almost over!

A nightmare has befallen my HD2, the usb port has come loose and I am unable to charge it to complete this work, I have just ordered a cradle with spare battery charging slot so when it arrives I'll finish the last bit of work I have to do. I managed to sort out most of the performance issues and am really happy with the battery life, general usability and finger friendliness. Theres just a bit of testing to be done on my custom made software and its ready to go! Devastating I cant test usb host mode. Guess I'll have to find a HD2 with the spare parts I need on ebay as repairing the usb is not an option, theres nothing to solder back its torn the connections on the board.

have you looked at following the tracks on the board towards the closest part, and solder a wire between that and the connector?
it's close to what i done on my modified usb hub to bypase the diode which original protects the host usb port and controller chip, so the external powersupply powers everything.

Ya, thanks anyways, it doesnt seem to go away for me, and i flashed Chrome rom, and it is fixed now.... thanks anyways, and again, great ROM, chrome isnt compared to it. but i like Wifi
am downloading it now (v13).. lets see. will update on ur link if i run across any problems
This is a great looking ROM. Like its almost ripped out of the TP2 or a Hero. Very quick and responsive. One noticeable isssue Ive had is a resizing problem when texting in landscape. Other than that, im also pleased i barely had to install anything, like almost everything i needed was there already.
Kudos
Just flashed this rom and I'm very happy with it. Runs very smooth and fast.
Only thing is I can't find the keyboard selector. Was it cooked in or do I have to install it? It seems the fuze keyboard is selected and this makes using the hw keyboard on a TP kind of difficult.
Awesome work on the rom!
Is all the hardware button working?

All seem to be working on my touch pro including volume control.
I had to install the fuze / pro keyboard selector to get the hw keyboard working correctly.
Home button
Is there any chance to make Home Button open Manila Home Tab instead of WM start menu?
Hmm I installed chome editor 1.6 and now the lower left button (next to the start button) always says action and when pressed tries to start the htc action screen which isn't there. Is there a way to restore this?
First I want to say Thank You for such a beautiful ROM. It's fast, finger friendly, and professional looking. (Love the slider)
A couple things I have noticed are as followed:
1. Under the Notifications options, when I select "New Text Message", then try to select a different sound it scrolls the window behind the drop down box... not the actual drop down box. Same goes for the "Event" box, but only on some. Hard to explain.
2. Minor but annoying - When waking up and the device is locked, the clock jumps to the bottom of the screen then back up to the top.
3. Another Minor thing - "Start" occasionally shows up on the top left of the screen. Is it always supposed to be there or never? I know it brings up programs.
4. GfxBoost (lol "DO NOT DISTRIBUTE") has some icon issued on the bottom left and right. Bottom left (you can only see 1/4 of the windows logo) and bottom right (Don't know what it's supposed to be)
All-in-all i feel this is a fantastic ROM. I'd love to see what else you got up your sleeve. After about 16 hours I was down to 64% battery with hardly any use, but then again I was in the office where I get ZERO signal!
funny, I can only confirm the first issue. This happens only when using a sweep to scroll. When the slider is used it scrolls ok. I have also seen this pn the activesync screen when selecting message delivery schedules.
I'm running without manilla btw. I love Titanium
I am not registered (yet) on the other forum, hence posting here.
Installed v13 and its amazing.. fast and nice graphics..
Only one issue uptil now. In call recording is not working. It gives an error (something like cannot start ICR, wrong certificate etc..) Can I unistall ICR (not in the remove programs list) and install autocall recorder 1.2 instead? tht gives me more options..?
thanks
Thank You
Very nice ROM, thanks! I haven't gone through everything, but all seemes good so far!
Hey herg!
I had no idea you were a chef too! I flashed your rom and it is kick ass so far...
Aside from TF3D being a little sluggish (not that I care since I no longer use it... iPhoneToday all the way... for now ) it have not seen bugs.
BT file transfer - oK
3G connection - oK
ActiveSync - oK
Battery life - pretty good so far
GPS lock on - to be tested later
Wifi - to be tested later
I will try to report some more later on, but so far... kick ass!
love it
i havent updated to D-fresh-est but your doug-e-fresh is an amazing rom thank you for your contributions buddy im flashing this sucka tonight

in 6.5.1 builds the keyboard selector is gone. Instead, hold down the keyboard icon at the bottom of the screen and the selector pops up. That's the good...the bad is that it makes it harder to toggle the keyboard off the screen cause pressing it leads to he selector instead of toggling but that's the build, not the ROM. I'm still loving the ROM

TProfiler

First of all, thank you for your interest and feedback! Mostly due to your request I want to present you a new version.
Version 1.25 changelog:
1. Added Connections on/off
2. Added alarm - poor one
Version 1.20 changelog:
1. Added new profiles: WiFi on/off, Bluetooth (BT) on/off, Phone on/off. Added also Soft Reset.
2. Some minor changes.
Version 1.10 changelog:
1. Added half-hours (I think quarters are too much).
2. Hour format (24 or 12) is automatically changed depending on your regional settings.
3. I don't have VGA device, but I think now the screen is squeezed a bit so it can fit to VGA square screen. Please, try and tell me what happens.
4. Added sound profiles - low, medium, high and very high.
5. Number of settings increased from 4 to 15.
Please, download TProfiler120.CAB for latest version.
Automatically switches device sound mode(available profiles - sounds on, sounds off, vibrate, volume low, medium, high, too high), turns on/off wifi, bluetooth, phone mode and soft resets at selected hour and weekday and thus saves your battery power. Simple application, doesn't occupy memory. Tested only on HTC HD2 but should work on other devices too (TP2, Touch HD/Blackstone - tested thanks to replies to this thread).
It works fine on TP2
Great application.
It would be great if it had also a 24-hour mode .
It would also be great if we could set the device to change to a certain volume on the Ring and System. I like to turn my phone down to 2 notches on both of those and crank it back after 5pm.

Great application !
Feature request: time in quarter/half hours too.
You might want to add some additional 'rules'. If you have a different time schedule for every day in the week, 4 just aren't enough...
Awesome
Been waiting for a free app like this. The Connective Tools one is nice, but I love the continuing user driven development of XDA. The suggestions on here are great and I echo the setting the volume to a custom level and the quarter/half hours things.

+1 though 5 min time slots would be better. Are going to try and integrate the App so it will switch on calendar appointments?
just installed 1.10 on my HD, but when I start the app it alerts "Doesn't exist", and after tapping 'ok' the app doesn't respond anymore, actually the complete screen doesn't respond. Using the hardwarebuttons I can go back to my homescreen and then using the system taskmanager I can shut the app down after that everythings fine..
anybody got an idea? because it looks like a useful app to me
Dear Xsite3,
I think you had to wait for a while - when started first time the application takes more time (1-2 minutes).
Just installed v1.1 on my HD2 and i get the message attached. Any ideas?
When I try to start up TProfiler I get a message box that simply says "Doesn't Exist". After that I can click on the TProfiler icon all day long but nothing happens. Wonder what doesn't exist?
V 1.10 crashes for me
I was using version 1.00 with no problems on my HTC Fuze running WM 6.5. But version 1.10 crashes on startup with this error:
TProfiler.exe
InvalidCastException
at
Microsoft.VisualBasic.CompilerServices.Conversions.ToInteger()
at
DeviceApplication1.Form1.Form1_Load()
at
System.Windows.Forms.Form.OnLoad()
at
System.Windows.Forms.Form._SetVisibleNotify()
at
System.Windows.Forms.Control.set_Visible()
at
System.Windows.Forms.Application.Run()
at DeviceApplication1.Module1.Main()
The app appears to draw at least a portion of it's window, and then crashes, though it goes by too quickly to see just how much of it is drawn
I really like the app. I especially like the addition of half hours in this version, if I can get it to work.

[Android] Fresh Android Kernel with/without Vibration (kernel updated hourly)

Hi,
I noticed, that after a total standstill, there is now a little movement on the nike android front. I want to contribute a little share to that.
I have set up an autobuild service for the android kernel. I automatically uploads a fresh zImage with the newest patches every full hour. I also reenabled Vibration as I never had any problems with that. If there are still people aound that need a kernel without Vibration let me know, I could set up a second build, too.
[update 03.03.10] Kernel without vibration for niki100 included.
The fresh kernel is found here.
[2010.03.31]UPDATE:
- IRQ wakeups enabled -> sleepmode 1 works
- Red led flashes when sleeping
- hw3d for eclair can be chosen in commandline (not fully functional)
- Double press cam button is home on 20key nike now
[2010.04.08]UPDATE:
- Some Keypad and defconfig changes to support ubuntu
[2010.07.01]UPDATE:
- Added .patch files to downloads for all who want to compile on their own (Recommanded! Some new devs would be very welcome here)
[2010.07.02]UPDATE:
- Removed .patch files again, they don't work as intended. Just 'git apply' the "Changes compared to stock kernel" instead...
- Fixed audio (please give me some feedback if it works now)
[2010.08.30]UPDATE:
- I just was tipped of that the service has been down for full 3 months (thx youngsien)
- Service is now online again, but will from now on only be updated once a day (should be enough)
Happy Androiding everyone!
mblaster
PS: If you don't know what a zImage is or does: It is the core of the Android operating system. It is usually in the same folder like haret.exe. You can tell your Android build to use a specific zImage in default.txt
Nice idea...
That's what we need to make good android builds working on nike.
The vibration ALLWAYS freezes de touchscreen, maybe a htc p5500 model issue.
i will follow this post hourly...
OK, I included the stock kernel without vibration in the service. Have fun!
@arleybarros: I dind't mean to post here hourly, but my server will keep the kernel up to date
the stock kernel freezes after a little vibration..
shouldn't vibration be disabled on stock release?

Yeah, you're right. The files were exchanged by my build script... Thanks for the hint, everything should be fine now.
*bump*
New updates in first post... I hope everything works
mblaster, could you post your default.txt cmdline, please? seems like nike still does not sleep, there no signs of flashing red led on mine.
my cmdline: "pm.sleep_mode=1 mddi.width=320 mddi.height=480 hw3d.version=1"
I'm running msmissions eclair.
are you running it without rootfs? there seems to be a problem with the norootfs basefiles that prevents sleeping.
yup, norootfs.
ok, got progress, I've runned android again, now nike felt asleep and flashing red led. wakeup works too - double tap on dpad center. I think that was because there was no reboot after installing after data wipe, norootfs missing some controls on power.
also, there is another power problem - MSM's standard reboot/poweroff commands from android does not working, can we fix this? device just freezing, seems like some revision on vogue's power controlls broken ours.

The same here with the norootfs stuff. I tried myn's donut on sqsh and norootfs. SQSH works like a charm (powermanegement, net, reboot, powerdown), but the same build/kernel combination has the problems mentioned before...

maybe some virtual button can be mapped to something?

Where would you like to have the enter key? I can try to fix it in, but i am not sure where to put it.
Some ideas would be:
- Put enter on cam, press WinKey once = menu, press Winkey twice = home
- Put enter un the key on the lower right (InternetExplorer in winmo?), probably better, but i dont know for shure which button it is. Dou you get a 'z' if you press it? I guess you do:
Code:
{{KEY_Z,FALSE,FALSE,FALSE,FALSE},FALSE}, // UNKNOWN KEY
Can you confirm that you get a 'z'? I will change it to enter then.
€: If ubuntu works it would be nice if you could start a thread about it. Would be great to have a full blown linux box in your pocket
Latest Kernel is working nicely on my Nike100, really impressed with the battery life now, great job on getting sleep to work. I have a request though... would it be possible to make one more kernel for the Nike 16 key? at the moment you can't type on it or use any of the keypad as the mappings are all wrong. If it would help I can tell you what keys are currently mapped to what on the 16 key. I don't know how hard it would be to change but if it is doable I would really appreciate it as it is really the last thing that is stopping the port from being day to day usable for me and other 16 key users. Unfortunately the onscreen keypad is just a bit small for typing with daily.
Thanks, hope its not too hard a fix.

Do you have this parameter in default.txt?
Code:
board-htcnike-keypad.keypadlayout=1
If not, add it and remove other entries concerning keypad layouts (might be there from kaiser). Most of the keys should be mapped correctly. Enter key seems to be missing. Could you try to press the button on the lower right (Internet explorer or something like that, depending on the branding of your phone) and tell me if it prints the letter 'z'?
Where would you like to have the enter key?

iexplorer key is useless in ubuntu and android, I think, so we can remap it, camera home key is used widely in android, you dont need to open up slider to access menus
If ubuntu works it would be nice if you could start a thread about it.

that would be nice too, now we can run LXDE or other X windowmanager compiled for ARM, ubuntu boots up fine and works like on kaiser. you can learn how this happen for ARM in Omegamoon's blog

[UPDATED 24.12.10] TG01 battery life - an experiment, an observation

Update on 24.12.10 - My phone hasn't frozen or switched off on it's own since I made these changes! The battery life constantly stays real good. I have only charged my battery up to 100% TWICE in 4 days!! I think this trick works! I will really appreciate if more testers come forward and help us test this
What will this mean?
This will mean that we can make TG01 battery stay minimum of 24 hours and maximum upto 38-40 hours with good amount of browsing, calls, texts, games, ALSO keep exchange sync on forever!!
In total before my battery completely died, I was able to do the following:
2357 minutes of stand-by (includes the activities as well)
137 minutes of browsing
3 Downloads (total less than 10MB)
180 minutes of calls
36 text messages
21 email downloads using Exchange sync - that was ON all the time
60 minutes of gaming
18 pictures taken using camera
12 minute video recorded using camera
1 round of back up and virus scan
This is what I've done:
Installed SPB Shell here
Removed Taskbar (was a cab file in miROM4 that I am using)
Removed Start Menu (I have attached cab that I used to remove start menu)
Before you remove start menu or taskbar - PLEASE make sure you have full functioning SPB Shell installed. You will loose WinMo start menu and notifications (see attached pic) so you will rely solely on SPB Shell ONLY
On miROM4 by removing start menu and taskbar the original free RAM (96MB) increases upto 105+MB - I don't know how, I don't know why. This is my observation and testing! When you install SPB Shell, you will notice the RAM going down to 78-80MB on boot. - I don't think it's bad either.
Now you might wonder what's so different.
Someone did an experiment showing that by running apps the battery drain was 20% compared to stock ROM
Another experiment also led to show that battery drain mostly is not a ROM issue
I am no tech, I am no expert. This is my pure observation and my experimentation with TG01. I know the links I've quoted are for HTC mainly, but I suppose theory still stays. If any one is willing to replicate those experiments on their TG01 please feel free to collaborate with me.
I have updated all my uses on TG01 between 100% battery and 0% battery.
After 100% charging the battery,
Just to re-fresh what I have done with it apart from leaving it on 'stand-by'
I am running SPB Shell with it.
Using Opera 10 browser for facebook, bing, google (approx browsing 97 minutes till now)
I have read news on Evening standard and BBC (approx time 35 minutes till now)
I have downloaded recipe for 2 cocktails
I have made 6 (appox. 147 minutes in total) phone calls
I have sent 31 text messages
My active sync is on since 10pm as I have set my exchange email retrieval 'as item arrives' - so it has downloaded 14 email items at different times. Experiments have shown that results are quite bad when it comes to using Exchange Active Sync schedule 'as item arrives'
I have played Sudoku (about an hour)
I have left my backlight at 70% (on SPB you have an option)
My battery life after 18 hours 30 minutes is 80% with free ram of 78-80% without any processes running i.e. on stand-by!!
1 call (33 minutes long)
5 text messages
2 games (56 minutes total) of puzzle
Facebook using Opera 10 (updated status, replied few messages, browsed mainly)
Downloaded tube map from a website using Opera 10
Took about 18 pictures using TG01
Cleaned RAM, Virus scanned and did an online back up.
After 27 hours 22 minutes - my battery life remaining is 50%
Made 0 phone calls, 0 texts
My active sync downloaded 7 emails
I checked XDA website for about 20 odd minutes using Opera 10
I used facebook for 10 minutes using Opera 10
I recorded a video of length 12 minutes
All this time my wifi and data connections were switched 'ON'
39 hours 17 minutes - my battery is 0% and my TG01 switched off!!
Putting all these links together, I think if ROMs don't affect the battery drain, but by removing these two elements if my phone survives in adverse conditions i.e. exchange email (shown above link) and running apps/games (shown above link) - then it had to be either of these two elements or settings behind them that drain our TG01's battery!
EDIT: Yes, Oly after removing taskbar, when we press on 'Start button' it freezes the mobile. We don't need to remove battery to get rid of the freeze. Just few seconds and it comes back to normal. But to avoid that occuring, I used the attached cab. That cab removes start menu from the face of my WinMo. PS: This cab is NOT my creation. I have found it on XDA. ALL the credit for this cab goes to NRGZ28 - this cab will prevent making RegEdits

I had DarkNinja task bar pre installed as cab from miROM4 - I removed it. It sort of 'disables' the start menu, but after that I removed start menu using one of the 'remove start menu keep x button' cabs and then eventually even removed 'x' button most programs respond to <- key at bottom.
I could attach cabs if you want but basically removing taskbar will remove all your icons on top and just leave the clock - it makes SPB Shell look nicer as well!
It been 27 hours and 21 minutes as I type and my phone's battery is 50%. I am going to edit the amount of tasks I have done in these 27 hours.
Hey drupa2drupad! Nice thread! I'm using similiar methods to you, but my battery is still awful! what battery are you on? Im on the stock toshiba one... i have spb shell running, opera 9.7 for abt 10-15 minutes, and the battery is 90% and opera 9.7 is meant to be more friendly for the battery,,, i have also diasabled the start emnu... i have had this layout for many months now and cannot reach battery levels as good as yours!

Hi Oly,
I am using stock toshiba as well - the one that came with my phone.
Did you remove the taskbar too? I am meaning to upload a screenshot of how my phone looks without taskbar. I am inclined to believe it's got something to do with removal of taskbar more than removing start menu. I have tried removing start menu on it's on and I had same result - Opera 10, draining 10% every 20 to 30 minutes of browsing.
I had desire taskbar installed as cab, I removed it! I am going to get some screen shots in first post
Hi Drupad,
Nice thread!! One thing I noticed was that disabling the start menu also gives 15-20mb free ram and it significantly improves battery life, disabling the sleep mode led and turning on wifi when not needed also helps!
P.S: After disabling windows start menu, I overided it with SPB Menu which is now my default Start Menu!

Hmmmm... I wonder how the taskbar removal makes a big impact on the battery life! I can understand the start menu, basically all your icons in the start menu are cached into the ram, so removing it will consume less resources , more battery life etc etc. But how doesit work with the taskbar? Im using the stck taskbar on Mangosora's 6.5.3 build with spb shell + mobilesense.

Yes i did that too on ffboys 6.5 rom(spb menu for startmenu) unfortunately it does not work for 6.5.3
Drupad, im guessing when u use the phone now, pressing the start softkey freezez your device?
Use the reg tweak to make the start button disappear (like the HD Mini)
You can find it by searching on the forum,
'HD Mini Start Key disabler' (something like that)

Probably, the battery difference is due to the start menu alone and not the taskbar because he removed both.

Yeah even Oly suggested he had free RAM (15MB) on disabling start menu so am sure about RAM now. I did use Wifi most of the time as well as data connection when I used Opera 10 for browsing. Did not disconnect data connection because it reconnected immediately - reason being my exchange sync set to 'retrieve as item arrives'
My start menu is SPB Menu as well Looks cooler, non-WinMo sort as well

I don't know if taskbar has got much to do with battery, but I did see quite a few reg-entries i.e. magnification etc - do they relate to taskbar? By removing taskbar, do I essentially switch these flickers off? Do you think anything i.e. notifications etc are being cached in ram as well? (non-educated guess!)

I have attached the cab in first post - this is the one I used to get rid of 'start' button completely. Yes my phone did freeze for few seconds to upto a minute, but came back to normal as soon as my screen locked! But after this cab, no problem at all! I think you can definitely have SPB menu as start menu - as it has got everything you need! I have 6.5.3 miROM4 as well and I was able to do it and use it flawlessly. I will try to put some more screenshots

I agree it has to be start menu but don't know if it's alone because Oly has disabled start menu for quite a few months now and he din't seem to notice this drastic change :s
If you guys see any changes by removing taskbar (if you are going to ) then please post back, may be we could be improving our battery lives

hi drupad! sorry i had a typo in my other post... i was meant to say i can sucessfully disable the start menu on 6.5.3/6.5.5 , but i cannot get it to open up the spb menu in the spb settings. there is no option for it... i will try and post screenshots soon! also i have been using this technique for months and having noticed a battery performance increase because i thought it was to do with the ROM i changed from ... i guess it does make a big difference! i will try and disable my task bar and report back! im not to sure if disabling the task bar stops your notifications caching in the RAM. perhaps someone else could help us out?

Thanks a lot for that mate will update first post tonight when I reach home! I wish more users could test this and give feedback.
I might have just made this battery issue 'not so severe' any more with these observations!!
Another thing I just realized is I haven't restarted my phone at all - The last time I switched off my phone was when I completely ran out of battery during this 'experiment'!
My phone seems to have stopped freezing. Its 4th day now!!

Hi.
I do not belive in miracles in electricty area but decided to sacrifice myself and test miROM4. I remove wm start by mirolg .cab "miROM_MMLauncher_Mod_Startmenu_Replacement.cab" and removed "Dark NInja Android xxxxxx". I did only "natural" test so far, by configuring SPB for my purposes
what took several minutes of time and battery has lost 20% . ( in my appinion quite normal for 1000mAh battery because of backlight was still on and few minutes of GPRS and Wi-Fi was done and this is what I observed on any ROM I tested so far).
Anyway, now I am charging battery to 100% and will do some more tests.
What annoy me after removing task bar is that I have not any information whether I have active GPRS or Wi-Fi connection and I have not any speed mechanism to disconnect ( what could be done very simply via notification bar). Have You got any idea what to with it ? Maybe SPB has any widget for it ?

Hi fxdjacentyfxd
I din't really look into monitoring speed of connections. I used widgets to mIake sure how much battery I have, if I am connected to wifi or not. When I was connected to data connection - I just checked if I am connected or not by using 'Connections' in the settings.
I am keeping my backlight at 30% now most of the time. I have seen even 10% makes it better, but my eyes don't really like that dark so I keep it 30%. May be that will help as well?
I have used it this way since - and also changed to miROM10 now, and still don't charge my battery at least before 30 hours of use! - which I find to be good battery life for daily smart phone use
Good luck and thanks for trying this, will wait for your feedback

Some software are able to connect via GPRS automatically and disconnect too after exit ( Palringo ) but most of them not. So I would like to have such fast way to disconnect ( I did not check - battery is still charging in shutdown - but mentioned "Connections" have not ability to disconnect from GPRS ?. As I remember there are three fields Phone, BT and W-Fi. Wi-Fi shows connected or not and one can switch-off wi-fi . It is not the same as as disconnect but better this than nothing.
Phone only shows that whole GSM radio is on not GPRS connection.
Anyway, maybe You know any kind of software that allows to manage GPRS-Wi-Fi. It does not has to be in upper bar. It is enough I will put it on SPB window.

Yes in my oppinion ( I was dealing with other "small" devices like PNA and PDA ) backlight is factor thar can dramatically make battery live longer. No wonder , it requires a lot of energy.
I guess that You ensured very good conditions for Your experiemnts. I mean very good quality of GSM and Wi-Fi signal which may cause the transcievers on tg01 could work with low power. It is in my oppinion second main factor. In bad conditions GSM can "eats" even 1-2 W of power.

Do You want to say that with miROM10 You have the same good result as with miROM4 without removing task bar and wm menu ?
Recently I tested miROM11 ( as mirolg said there are only minor changes in comparison to miROM10 ) but I am rather disappointed. Not stable. Eats battery as any other ROM.

waking up after sleep.

Hi all, apologies if this has been answered else where.
Currently running a Lenovo S20-30 Win 10 dual boot with the latest Beta release. Surprisingly really enjoying it. The only real issue I am having is it waking after it goes to sleep. Mouse and cursor frozen and wont fully wake unless a reboot.
Is anyone else having similar issues and have a possible solution?
Thanks and appreciate the help.

My lenovo T500 reboots when it goes to sleep under Remix. My current "fix" is running a "stay alive" app I purchased for $2 (the free ones had too many ads or not enough functionality) that will dim the screen but not let it sleep if it has wall power or a good charge. I am also surprised how much I am enjoying it; the T500 is a screaming machine with Remix. It was barely adequate for web and RDP under Windows. I am getting incredibly good performance in Netflix, TWC TV app, Chrome, Dolphin and Microsoft RDP under Remix.

so...
details?id=com.synetics.stay.alive
you have to figure out the rest.
I made sure it worked at least somewhat before contributing to get the additional features. I am really hopeful that a later beta or some other app will give me more control. My notebook has a screen off mode that is better than just dimming but isn't sleep. I wish I could get it to use that. The dimming that the Stay Alive app does was enough that the screen would not keep me up at night but there is enough of a glow to know it is on. But it makes Remix more usable now.
I had this issue too. I noticed if you tap the power button once, the screen comes back on but the mouse won't still work sometimes. If you just tap the power button a 2nd time after the screens on, it would start working again. But I did have trouble w/ wifi coming back on after sleep. I had to toggle it off/on. Let me know if the double tap of the power button fixes it for you too?
BTW, I just added another little app - LockScreen (a free one). That way I can easily lock the screen if I walk away for a few minutes, have it dim but not sleep and reboot.
Tapping the power button again works for me to.
Tap, double tap not working here. Shame. Hopefully a fix soon.

Another update on my sleep issue and workaround...
I don't know how things changed; I may have tripped a setting or something but using the LockScreen app was putting it to sleep and triggering the reboot instead of giving the Stay Alive app a chance to catch it, so I quit using the LockScreen and just let it time out and then the Stay Alive app would dim the screen and keep it from timing out. So no reboot, but unfortunately no lock screen; I wanted it to lock. Poked around some more and found an app listed as Hidden Settings for Galaxy but it isn't really Galaxy specific. One of the the things it does is let you set up and enable Daydream mode. It turns out Daydream doesn't work properly on Remix, but it fails in a good way. If you select the clock (or anything else, but stay away from full screen stuff as sometimes that will stay in the way for several seconds) and set it for both docked and charging, then when the screen timeout is reached the clock will show for a couple of seconds and then it will go to the lock screen (assuming you enabled, I guess), not go to sleep and Stay Alive dims the screen. Clunky and convoluted, but it ends up doing exactly what I wanted.
ETA - One other little nit - After it dims on the lock screen, focus is set to the text box and you just have to start typing the password to get the screen to brighten and unlock. Clicking does not cause the screen to brighten, which worried me at first (thought it was hung).

Just be careful poking around at settings; I did something to make mine have issues with being locked after I had it working. More tweaks got it okay(ish) again. This is not a good solution for battery use; I don't think there really is one if standby doesn't work. Android/Remix doesn't seem to offer levels of powering off. What I would like to do is power off the screen, spin down the disk but leave the processor and wifi powered.

Yep going back to sleep again and not waking up properly with SA. Think will give up until a fix.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
Mine is only doing that now on battery and it is usually on wall power. As I use it on battery so rarely, the simple answer is to just set the screen timeout higher when I do. On an older notebook like mine, a battery gives you freedom to move around the house/office with the machine running and maybe run without plugging in for two or three hours. It's my semi-lightweight UPS.
Anyway, I am not giving up. This is the only thing not working perfectly for me. My camera, mic, bluetooth, mouse and wifi all work fine. I stream videos in Youtube, Netflix, TWC TV, Amazon, FB and browsers with good sound and picture; no lag. I connect to work with Microsoft RDP and have less lag than using RDP in Windows. Yesterday I booted over to Windows to increase the size of my data.img (and had no trouble with that) and that definitely hardened my resolve. It is hard to believe I was putting up with that kind of speed just a few days ago. Now that I know I don't have to it seems worse.
After more research, I am back again with what I think is the final answer. I should and likely will write an app to undo this if my battery gets really low, but all you have to do if you never want your machine to go into sleep mode is press Alt-F1 to get the console and then do something like this:
# echo nosleeptilbrooklyn >/sys/power/wake_lock
And then Alt-F7 to get back. I did that as a test, unplugged from the charger and let it sit about 10 minutes with display timeout at 5 minutes. 5 minutes in the screen went dark. That used to be followed by a reboot about 5 seconds later. It did not reboot. When I woke it, it did initially show the main screen and then blanked it and brought up the password screen. For some reason I had to click before I could type (usually don't have to). Anyway, the above "fix" worked. To undo it, I need to just do this:
# echo nosleeptilbrooklyn >/sys/power/wake_unlock
There is a programmatic interface to do pretty much the same thing but with more options and I am thinking I may write something to use that to set the lock and then check the battery on a timer and unlock if it falls below 20% or some other setting.
EDIT TO ADD - A little more poking around yielded info that pretty much all manufacturers have had battery protection for several years now and will not let the battery run down into the kill zone even if the OS is frozen or even if it actively tries to stay alive. I would still advice checking your BIOS and/or doing some research on your particular system but it is likely safe to just leave it locked if you only want it shut down, hibernate or go into standby when you specifically choose that interactively.
