[Q] USB port failed - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My vibrant was on the charger yesterday, when I heard the connect disconnect sound coming from my phone. I unplugged it and realized the cable was burnt and my port smelled burnt as well.
My phone was rooted and I have [ROM] Stock JK2 Froyo Flashable ZIP (built from eugene373's Odin 2E). Can someone please help me restore it to enclair 2.1 before I call t-mobile, and ask for a replacement?

This has nothing to do with the ROM ........
Based on the information, makes me wonder if you had some sort of power surge on your charger, it is not on the phone side. Get a new usb cord (DO NOT USE THIS ONE) plug into your computer with it on and see if it recognizes, if it does, then you can Odin back to stock (read up on the sticky bible in the gen section)
If it does not recognize see if you can get into recovery. If that does not work (Assuming the phone is not fried) then you will have to go step by step and check the phone out. There alot of these diagnostics in the bible you have to read up on them. There is not enough info to really help you........:::
1. See if the phone works.............. if it is fried..........easy return
2. See if the computer recognizes------if it does reflash back to stock
3. See if you can get into recovery---if it does reflash back to stock then you should be able to reflash back to stock... this will take a bit of research and testing on the phone to see if there is damage
Hope that helps

Thanks for the advice, I was able to get my phone back up and running. But It seems to get hardware locked when I try to get into download mode. I haven't had a chance to buy a new data USB cord to check if it connects yet.
Other than that, I think I am going to rough it out a week at least, until I feel comfortable enough with Odin and the bible.......

white rooting i loss connection

while rooting i lose connection** omg sorry
So this is how the story starts
i got my fasciante, rooted it fine using FascinateRoot_v02
but then i tried to flash cwm using odin and it wasn't working so i was trying some different stuff and i ended up going back to stock 2.1 and losing root.
so now when i try to root using FascinateRoot_v02
it finds my devices reboots it
but then while it is in its waiting period of 5 minutes it loses connection with my computer and then cannot find the device and thus cannot finish root
i also cannot get the OTA 2.2 update from verizon
i get an error
anyone have any ideas on what i can do? i am at a loss and feeling completely useless
now my computer isn't recognizing my phone at all
drivers are installed
and it worked four days ago
i dont know what i did
how can i fix my phone if i cant get root back.
gaaah
this is so frustrating
this is what i did
first time i rooted it i had sdcard A in my phone
i took it out afterwards and replaced it with memeory card B
everything was fine until i tried to odin clockwork on my phone then i lost root and 2.2
i put memory card A back into phone and like magix root is back and 2.2
what am i missing? how does this effect the phone?
i still want to put clockwork recovery on my phone but now i am too scared.
Make sure that your phone is connected to your computer motherboard with the cable it came with, sometimes other devices can cause it to disconnect. Make sure to disconnect other devices if need be. If you want you can always put it into download mode and flash recovery. You should be ok
Also, my laptop will sometimes not connect to teh phone. A quick re-install of the drivers corrects that immediately.
Likewise, if you try Heimdall instead, you set teh drivers when you launch the application, so it is always fresh. I am not certain if Heimdall and Odin are interchangeable for everything - I use whichever is recommended on the DIY's that I am following (I know little about this stuff other than what I am taught in those DIY how-to's that we get when doing all this cool ****...)
So I would:
a) re-install the drivers to get Odin seeing the phone (if I read your problems right that was an issue).
b) follow the instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048380 - this will get you up on the ComRom/KangBang with the EC01 Modem. You will be rooted and have CWM.

[Q] Galaxy SII almost bricked please help.

I have a problem with Galaxy s2. Basically it started to drain my battery like hell.
It gets empty in about 10 hours.
Now when I want to flash the phone once again in order to get everything back as it was when I bought it I cannot. This is due to MTP connection activating itself as soon as I turn on the phone. And I cannot enable usb debugging due to that as it says that I have to remove the USB cable.
In addition my phone charges itself really fast about 2 hours. And when I try to power it on without charger plugged in it gives me charging image and yellow triangle with ! in it and thermometer aside flickering. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix my phone?
Have you tried using CWM to wipe all data + clear all cache, then do a fresh re-install?
Yes I tried it now. It still says my USB is connected when its not. And now it doesnt unlock my sim card.
Factory reset that dont work return phone to a service centre ..

Well thats the case I have voided warranty already. Wondering if there are any chances I could put old rom back before returning it?
Make a DIY USB JIG then flash it back to stock rom and have it checked.

Not sure what do you mean by DIY USB JIG but I cannot flash it because I cannot switch USB debugging on... Thats the case it shows me that USB is always connected when it isnt and when USB is connected it doesnt let to switch on USB debugging.
Route is source stock rom and Odin load stock rom into Odin enter download mode on phone and then connect cable and flash rom .
No download mode

Thank you all who have replied. I have now managed to get over the USB issue somehow but still something is wrong either with battery sensor or battery. When I power off my phone it switches on automatically and shows the thermometer and battery charge icon. Anyone else have had this problem? It also charges up to 95% and it bursts to 100% very quickly.
EDIT: Now I tried my friends battery and I did not get the flickering temp error and my friend didnt get it with my battery as well. So something now I'm totally out of ideas.

I am having the same issues here, wonder if the topic creator resolved this in any way? I am thinking of getting a new battery?
Just FYI wear a condom or something on your galaxy S II. As it turns out from service my phone supposedly has liquid damage which does not the warranty apply. I have to pay 240 euros in order to get it fixed :S
Hey Guys.
I had an S1 7 months prior to buying the S2, and have upgraded/fresh installed ROMS many many times over the past year. Once the S1 bricked during an upgrade and I was able to get it into Download Mode without using a micro-USB jig from instructions on this website. If my memory serves me correctly, it was a procedure something fairly simple like hold the Home, Volume Up and Power buttons continuously until the phone goes into forced Download Mode.
However, this procedure doesn't work with the S2 or I'm remembering it incorrectly, and I'm unable to find that instruction webpage again. Now my S2 is almost bricked showing a message I've not seen before, "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
So far, I cannot get past this message and Kies 2.0.2.11071_128 doesn't recognize the device nor that emergency recovery is needed.
Unfortunately Samsung programmers haven't been quite smart enough or forward thinking enough to make Kies work from behind a proxy which requires authentication (I live and work on a university campus and the only way to the internet is via proxy and authentication) and it has never shown in the past 9 months of usage that it needs to update itself nor finds any official ROM releases. Therefore I've been forced to use Odin and ROMs from here or samfirmware.com for my updates. Until now, there has never been any major problems that I couldn't get around.
Do any of you have instructions on how I can get my S2 into download mode so as to get Odin to recognize the device? It is not possible for me to make my own JIG here in Thailand as there is nowhere for me to go purchase electronic equipment and parts such as soldering irons and resistors. I am a computer engineer and could easily build such if it were possible to get needed parts.
Thanks hugely in advance for any help offered.
Just order a high from ebay

Well kiss my rosy red butt-cheeks! Speaking from personal experience as tech support, I know empirically to replicate something 52 times prior to asking for assistance. This instance shouldn't have been an exception!
Directly after posting this request for assistance, I decided to try Odin once again and DANGED if this time it found my device even with the "Firmware encountered" error showing. Odin stopped around 90% and forced me to reset my S2, but this time it went right into Download mode with nary a fuss. Now Odin just successfully installed KG6.
So if there is anything to be learned from this experience, either by other users with similar issues or myself, it is "if at 1st you don't succeed, try again and again and again and again."

[Q] Might have hard bricked my phone

So I was trying to root new Galaxy s2.. long story short, I think I hard bricked it.
The device won't power up; or at least the screen won't show anything.
I can't get to Download Mode.
Is there anyway I can save my new 400 dollar investment?
How are you trying to get into download mode ? Hold the volume down, home button and the power button at the same time. When you get the Samsung screen, release the power button but keep holding the volume down/home buttons until you get into download mode.
If you really can't get into download mode your options are:-
1) Get a jig. This would be your last chance to get into download mode before sending it off for repair.
2) Find someone near you who does JTAG repairs. This option will be cheaper than paying for Samsung to repair your phone.
3) Return the phone to Samsung. As you've tried to root the phone, there's a fair chance you'll end up paying for said repair as this voids your warranty. On the other hand you might be one of those people who get lucky and Samsung fixes your phone under warranty regardless. A roll of the dice essentially.
Edit - Remove your battery & leave it out for a minute or so before trying to get into download mode.
Or failing options 1 & 2 already suggested then perhaps option 2a..
Apply a current to the sim connectors under the battery and make sure it never evers boots again, Samsung won't know what's happened to it and will repair/replace FOC.
(I find an old laptop PSU minus connector plug usually applies enough current for this)
Hehehehe ;-) Damn that brought back memories Uridium. I used to do that with Sega Mega Drive cartridges. However, I'm not sure we should be suggesting same on here. Not exactly ethical and bordering on fraud tbh

Looking at JIGS on Ebay, I'll probably get one from there.
So how would I use that?
Plug it in to get to Download Mode then take it out and plug in USB connection to my PC?
I'm still unaware of which correct firmware to put it, so this is so scary :[

Haha I will try the JIG method first.
But thanks for the devious idea ;]
Yep. Look for "Samsung Galaxy S2 download mode jig" or something like that on eBay. Shouldn't be more than a few bucks. When you get it, make sure the phone is off, plug the jig in the usb port & if you're lucky the phone will boot into download mode. Yeah, once you're in download mode, remove the jig, plug a USB cable in/connect to your PC then flash your firmware of choice via Odin.
We can worry about which firmware to flash once you're able to get it to boot with a jig tho. Post back here when you get it & then we can work out which firmware to go with.

Thanks for your help! The JIG should arrive by Friday. Till then.. back to my iPhone 3G, yuck.
Hey I have an idea, why don't you tell us how you think you bricked your phone.
Because, for example, if you've flashed a bad Kernel then your phone may seem bricked (it has all the characteristics) but can be recovered by someone who knows what to do. Likewise, if you were flashing something with Odin and you had a sudden spasm attack and pulled the USB out, you've bricked your phone. Tell us what you did and we can give a proper reply.
EDIT: If the phone is only soft bricked and you can get into DL mode with a JIG, you go can it without one.

Well, first I was using odin to root it by changing the kernel. But I think I was using the wrong version and then I got "firmware is wrong. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again."
Then I tried to put back 2.3.4 and that's where I think went wrong. I unplugged the phone because it was just stuck with Odin on for over 10 minutes.
Then now I can't even turn it on.

If Odin hadn't finished its business and you unplugged your phone then yea, you've probably bricked it. Cases like these is why I never use Odin, its beta software which even the developers don't fully understand how it works. Even if through no fault of your own, Odin can fail, and that leaves you pretty well ****ed. Try the JIG, you may have unplugged it when it wasn't flashing something important, but yea, I'd start making up a really good excuse to get a new phone.

Well it might be possible to Unbrick your phone without Jig, but solution has not worked for 100% user, though it has worked for me(I'm not sure it was hard brick). So here are the steps:
1- Start Odin
2- Attach the USB cable to the PC (DO NOT ATTACH IT TO THE PHONE)
3- Press and hold "Volume up" and "home" buttons
4- Attach the USB cable to the phone while holding both buttons
5- The phone will enter in download mode
Just flash the stock kernel after that.
And don't forget to THANK me if it works

[Q] Phone recognizes dock and jib, but won't charge

I got my GSII on launch day and here in the past couple days my phone won't charge. I can put it in the dock and it goes into carmode and if I have the jig it it will recognize it when i reboot into download mode.
Is there anything I can do to fix it?
AT&T wants me to take it to a corp store to make sure it isn't damaged before they will exchange it, but I am running AOKP right now and I can't get it connected to my computer to flash a GB rom. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I were you and intending to take it back to the manufacturer, I'd make sure the flash counter is reset (There could be a yellow triangle when you power on your phone or not, don't send it back to them with aokp on it I warn you of this.)
If you are using a linux based enviroment you could use heimdall to flash a kernel that would give you CWM back, and also if your linux and adb is there, you could mount usb storage and attach some rom that'd be 2.3 related.
From there, while in recovery still, I would format /system /data /datadata /cache, reboot recovery (under advanced, not 3 button.) Then I'd install the 2.3 zip and modem and boot it up.
Now you are back on gingerbread, but to send it back you need complete stock.
You could heimdall flash the stock firmware and would be set.
If your using windows make sure the correct drivers are installed, download is vol up+down no power button, make sure odin is open before plugged in, then connect your phone and you should be set.
I don't know your desktop enviroment but I hope this helped.
Have a good day
Thank you for your help, but I guess I should have clarified something in my original post. I can't get any computer to recognize the phone. If it weren't for the fact that the dock and usb jib are recognized, I'd think the usb port was completely dead.
I thought it might be the rom/kernel I'm running (AOKP/Siyah) but even when it is turned off I can't get it to start charging. Luckily I have an external dock charger and an extra battery I can use to keep it powered up

Heartbreak.
I had this problem with a Captivate, never did figure out a solution (link below). I ended up getting an insurance claim denied (which was 100% my fault since I didn't know the rules and unwittingly told them I was attempting to claim outside the 30 day window) so I invoked the "I'm a 10 year customer and I've never asked for anything" clause and was granted a very early upgrade to get a GS2. It was very frustrating and disappointing. I'm nowhere near an expert but I searched for weeks and I couldn't find anyone else with the same problem. It actually looks like a few others have had something similar happen since I gave up and stopped checking my thread but no obvious solutions so far.
Anyway I hope you have better luck than I did but if nothing else, I hope it helps to know you're not completely alone with having had this problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=994567
Well, this is what I would do:
Flash your very first Nandroid (should be a stock OS with custom Kernel), then you just need to flash the Kernel back to stock, follow this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1602761 to flash a Kernel with Mobile Odin.
If you don't have a GB Nandroid, things are a little more complicated, but not terribly so. IF your flash counter has not been toggled, I'd try the following:
Download the stock image from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18630030#post18630030 and again use Mobile Odin to flash back to GB. Download the image to Dropbox, and unzip it there, use the Dropbox app on your phone to move all the files to the root of your SD card (or would it be the internal card? Not sure, never done this before). This way you get the files on your phone and can return to stock with Mobile Odin.
If your flash counter has incremented, you'll need to try your jig when you get back to stock and see if it clears the counter. If not, it's a bit more complicated, you'll need to flash an older version of GB 2.3.4 AND the bootloaders (flashing bootloader ***WARNING***, if ANYTHING goes wrong with this process, you hard brick your phone, flashing bootloaders is NOT recommended) once you have the old bootloader flashed, you can use the jig, take the OTA update if you want or just return the phone. Don't forget to do a factory reset and remove your SD Card.

Another thing you might try that some have reported success with, use a q-tip with a bit of alcohol on your USB port, and try a new cable, you might just get lucky and get one more connection out of it, in which case you could use the standard return to stock methods outlined here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18630030#post18630030

[GUIDE][REF]Basic Trouble Shooting Steps for ODIN FAILURE

So, you've been flashing stuff and now for whatever reason, your phone won't boot.
Now you're trying to save your poor phone's life with Odin but odin keeps failing.
Here are a few basic steps to go over to try and get Odin to cooperate:
First things First, if the device shows no signs of life whatsoever, you press the power button and it just sits there blank,
i am sorry to inform you, you are bricked and at a point beyond the help of odin. this will require JTAG to fix.
if you are in a bootloop or the phone freezes at some point of the boot sequence, this is what odin can fix.
if you do not have odin, get it HERE
here are the USB DRIVERS
i will not provide links to stock firmwares to use, those are ALL OVER the forum,
this is to help get those flashed not to completely hold your hand
only thing i'll add about which to use is:
DO NOT USE A PACKAGE CONTAINING BOOTLOADERS
IF ODIN FAILS DURING THE WRITING OF A BOOTLOADER THAT WILL BRICK THE DEVICE
STEPS:
Use USB ports connected to MOTHERBOARDno front panel ports, hubs etc...
Use a Known good usb data cable preferably OEM, you may want to have 1 or more spare just in case
right click odin and run as administrator
Have odin ready to go before you touch your phoneAll files in the proper place, now boot to DL mode and connect
If this is still Failing try:
Exiti Odin
Uninstall USB drivers
Reboot PC
Reinstall USB drivers
Switch usb port being used on pc
Rinse and Repeat until either it works or all ports exhausted
If after trying all motherboard ports odin is still cursing at you from Asgard, try one of those spare cables i mentioned earlier.
Sometimes PCs just don't wanna work, if you have the availability of another pc ANYWHERE (even the library or something) try these steps on that machine.
If its still failing on multiple pcs, clean out the usb port on the phone with Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol
then blowing it out with compressed air and let dry.
still nothing? you may have a hardware failure in the usb port on the phone.
Standard disclaimer: I AM NOT responsible for anything you've done or will do to your device.... this is merely a reference for you to use to get yourself out of a bind.
thank you, you're welcome, Good luck and happy flashing.

i am sorry to inform you, you are bricked and at a point beyond the help of odin. this will require JTAG to fix.
if you are in a bootloop or the phone freezes at some point of the boot sequence, this is what odin can fix.
if you do not have odin, get it HERE
here are the USB DRIVERS
i will not provide links to stock firmwares to use, those are ALL OVER the forum,
this is to help get those flashed not to completely hold your hand
only thing i'll add about which to use is:

Phone stuck
Hi, I'm hoping maybe someone can help me figure out what the problem is.
I'm trying to flash CWM Recovery on GTI9105p. I've actually done this before on the same device, but this time it doesn't work. Odin seems to work fine and shows PASS! after 32 seconds, but my phone stays on "Downloading..." with the blue bar full. If I manually reboot the device and try to go to recovery, it stays on Samsung model logo. Otherwise I can boot the phone just fine. What could be the issue?
