Automatic restarts and cause? - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I find that sometimes my streak (318) seems to automatically restart in my pocket.of course I'd like to find out the cause.is there an app which shows me the uptime and a way to read any logs that may have been written just before and after the reboot?

i seem to have the same problem

Do you use SetCPU or any 3rd party apps?
Some people suggested the restarts may be caused by overclocking the CPU

I am using stock 318 rooted, without setCPU or any fixes and i also have a problem with restarts.
It is pretty random - last time happened in the morning just after disconnecting the charger after overnight charging session...

yea im running stock 2.2 318 with no mods at all and it happens more times then i would like, a few times it just shuts down on me in my pocket and stays off

I caught mine restarting once and it just stayed on the dell logo. had to pull battery and restart. 318, no mods

Restarts seem to be a problem with the streak no matter what ROM you have lots have sent there streak back me included and got a new one, this one seems to be OK now
Don't know why it happens for some and not others

Had that happen twice on my rooted 318 streak with no other mods.

Make sure it is not your battery door. It has to be on reel food or there is a switch that will shut it down. I had this problem when i first got mine i would set the phone down and it would reboot. I taped a half a business card on the back of the battery. it helps push the back out a little and ensures the back on switch makes contact.
Never had the problem again.

Battery cover
Yes the battery cover is the culprit... Try to push your battery in different are and you might see your device rebooting..

Its was the battery/battery door for me cuz since going and getting s new one I have not had a singel restart. If any of you guys are still with in your 30 days got return it
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App

Mine has always done it, but since going to the official O2 2.2 upgrade it now gets stuck on the Dell logo when rebooting, so I have to take the cover off and remove the battery to get it to restart properly. Interestingly it never seems to do it when I'm using it - only when I go to pick it up, I find it's either just gone off or stuck on Dell logo. I guess it must be the back so I'll go stick a train ticket behind it and hope it solves it! I've not had problems with the back being loose and can actually take the back off for several seconds before it dies... which makes me wonder if it is just a loose cover....

My 2.2 Froyo with 318 has done this twice now. Took it out of my pocket this morning to find it stuck on the Dell logo and extremely hot. When I'd done the usual battery out fix it showed it had lost about 50% of its charge. Earlier this morning it was giving me a warning about a defective charger when I unplugged it. Installed Battery Solo Widget recently so I'm wondering if that played a part in the problem.

Reboot while on the phone
Mine as well. It freezes while i was on the phone. I had to remove the battery to restart the phone. 5 hours later it rebooted itself. I have an official ROM. I have rooted my phone 3 weeks ago. I wonder if this is the reason....
I try to shake the phone just to see if it is because the battery but nothing. It starts to annoy me.
Do you think I need to send it back?
YD.

Mine got stuck on the logo with 318 and i had to re-qdl tool it to get it back going. Hapened twice. put att 1.6 back on and had problems with restarts and it going back to factory state. im on the 3 replacement now

I have a new theory on this.my EU Streak (318 froyo nonrooted) keeps resetting when in the pocket, out when I carry it in my defender case, under some short or so. It.s also warm here, so I'm starting to suspect that the reset s are temperature related.
Just now, I left home with 96 percent battery. I played some music and it stopped after ca 10 minutes. Dead. Cant revive without battery removal. I was only able to get to that another 6 or do minutes later. And then it showed the battery to be empty, red.
It must gave chewed through 90% in those 6 dead minutes.
Does anyone know of a software to monitor (and log to sd card) the internal temp, etc?
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk

And just now it rebooted itself while sitting quietly on the desk. Well ventilated. sigh

Hello, i'm having problem with my streak5 (just bought used)... It runs froyo 2.2.2.
Some times it shut down and it's not possible to restart. Every time it's necessary to plug the charger for 10-20 seconds.
The same things happen if i remove the battery: In order to restart i have to plug the recharger...
Someone has an idea?

Battery will not charge due to high/low temperature (not a battery defect)

Hey there,
I have my Vibrant for a good year now since it came out pretty much. Last week it just stopped charging out the blue. The battery is completely empty and shows a thermometer with a warning sign and stops charging seconds after its plugged in. So I assumed it might be a battery malfunction and I got my spare battery in as soon as I came home and tried charging - same problem. I think it is highly unlikely that both batteries fail at the same time. Therefore, I assume there is something wrong with the temp sensor in the phone. I saw a few people have a similar problem with the epic 4G, but the discussion got really side tracked by other issues. My phone is rooted, but I was running stock froyo, so that shouldn't be the problem or should it?
I just wanna know if anybody had the same problems and if there is a quick solution, I google and forum searched a while but as soon as you throw in the term battery it gets spammed with battery life discussions.I just checked my files I have on the phone, apparently I have the premium insurance - does that mean I just can go to the next Tmo store and get a replacement? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Phill
Well for your problem, i suggest you try a different rom and see if the problem persists... maybe its a bug
And as for insurance, you mail the phone in and pay a deductible, which should be like 135$ or so. They send you a refurb.. or if you say it wus lost, you dont have to mail in phone

thanks for the quick reply. Is there a way to reflash without a battery?
I don't see it as a bad thing. If your phone gets too hot and keeps charging that's going to burn something inside. When my phone won't charge I know I have let it down. So it can cool down. But to fix your problem reboot the phone. You can keep charging it after it boots up

As long as your phone can run successfully for a couple minutes, i dont see why not
Sent from a cell tower to the XDA server to you.
Mine did something similar. I picked it up after putting it on the charger. It was hot and would not come on. I unplugged it and let it cool off for a while and it cleared up.
I got that message once...
Vibrant was in a car dock, with power.
It was *HOT* out and sun was hitting the back of the unit. (A/C on of course)
Google Navigation was running (display brightness max)
Google Listen was running
Bluetooth was passing music to a speakerphone
When I run the phone with that setup, the charger can't even keep up with the phone power needs. The battery level slowly drops. No question the phone is working hard.
This was a true heat issue... I removed the charger and turned off the display to let it cool off a bit. (I was almost home).
So the question again, is your phone hot or is it a false reading?
Robert
Hey,
I am sorry I didn't clarify the actual battery temp. It is normal - so its neither in the sun or in a too cold spot when I try charging it. The phone probably runs for one for a few seconds before turning off so there is no chance of the battery stats wipe. I think I will try to find an external charger and try to charge the batteries this way to have enough juice for flashing a new rom. Thanks for all the replies!
Does it charge the battery with the phone off? If not, I don't think a new ROM will help.
Hey there! Wondering if you got around to solving this. I've got a Vibrant doing the same exact thing. Battery being cool it sais that is overheating. Did changing the ROM solved it or not?

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but a resolution never seemed to be made here. Has anybody found a fix to this?
As of yesterday, my wife is having the same issue with my old Vibrant phone which she now uses. It's flashed with Bionix V 1.3.1 and Tigerblood overclock to 1.2ghz. This could be the issue, the Tiger Blood overclock, but I'm not sure. I'm out of the country for three weeks and currently she's left with a dud of a phone that keeps giving her the temperature warning in the triangle when plugged in while the phone is powered off followed by it stop charging. When she turns it on, she gets to the SD card check and then the phone completely freezes. Once in a while it's able to stay on for a minute or so before freezing, but more often than not the phone does not fully turn on and just goes frozen after a few seconds, sometimes at the Tigerblood logon screen before making it to the desktop. Me being 4000 miles away doesn't make it easier to help her but I've recommended she leave the phone unplugged, battery out for the night to see what happens. I also told her to take off her silicon case thinking maybe that has something to do with the overheating. Well after 7 hours of her letting it sit to cool off like that, with the case off, she plugged it back in and is having the same issues as yesterday. Absolutely no progress made. One of her colleagues said she should try leaving the phone in rice confused:) so she's giving that a go and another guy in a phone shop who she went to for advice after work said that the motherboard might need replacing. I'm convinced all it needs is to have the Tigerblood removed or reflash a rom onto it but there's really no knowing unless I have it in my hand.
Is there any quick fix to this problem without having to do all that? Surely there must be a way to charge the phone without it heating up and freezing up. She's tried plugging it into different rooms, on her laptop, etc, none seem to get rid of the temperature problem. I've had the phone since August 2010 and never had any issues with it. I also never once saw that temperature error message so was taken aback when she showed me it over skype. I just upgraded to the S3 and gave her the phone 2 weeks ago, but surely it shouldn't just die out just like that? Thought the Vibrants were made tougher than that?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Much thanks in advance
Its most probably a kernel issue or a bug in the rom; so the only way to find out is to flash another kernel/rom..

Will be looking into reflashing another kernel/rom when I get home in a few weeks time, but it must be noted that the phone has been showing no signs of life for the last few days now. After letting it sit out for 7 hours on the first night, battery out and everything, she went to plug it in the following morning and this time absolutely no notification came up. Not even a lighting up of the phone or anything. No signs of life at all. Every time she hit the power button nothing occurred. The phone still heats up and after a few minutes while plugged in and gets very hot to the touch again but no matter how many times she attempts to turn it on, nothing happens.. She's tried plugging it into her computer via usb, into electric sockets in other rooms, even in the bathroom in one of the 115 volt electric shaver outlets in the bathroom (we live in the UK currently), and none of these ideas worked. Still no signs of life. It has been this way for three days now and is frustrating as I can offer no advice to her to get the phone to turn on anymore.
What on earth can be the problem? Has this happened to anyone before? And is there a fix to this or can we consider the phone to be a paperweight at this point?

Some kernels require a certain amount of power to fully boot the phone up and will not charge until it has 5% battery or so. I personally think her battery may be unable to hold a charge or like I said before it doesn't have enough juice to boot the phone because of the kernel. There is a way to charge the battery with the phone off. You can use ANY kind of usb cord, I used an old printer usb cable when I had to do this. All you do is cut off the side that is not usb and strip the positive and negative wires(red and black), then place the stripped wires on the positive and negative connectors on the back of the phone and insert the battery (make sure it's a snug fit). Plug the usb end into your pc and charge the battery that way, DO NOT let charge for over 2 minutes at a time. Wait five minutes and do it again if you have to. If she gets it to boot up, I would definitely flash a new kernel first to see if thats how the problem originated.

Constant crashing then (soft?) bricked

I bought a X10i a few months ago, then the USB port broke. I sent it back to the eBay seller for a new one. I picked it up yesterday. At first, it was ok.
When I started rooting/flashing 2.1, I started getting random crashes while booting. Tried other ROMs, including official Gingerbread, but it always crashed at the lock screen. Tried to take the SD card out, and it didn't help. Then I took the SIM card out and that worked for a bit. It seemed like a bad SIM card.
Then, it started crashing even without the SIM card. I took everything out and it was still crashing. After repairing the gingerbread, the screen stopped working.
Currently, when I press the power button, the green LED flashes briefly and the unit vibrates (sometimes short, sometimes long). The screen, however, is completely dead. It doesn't light up at all, not even with "SONY ERICSSON".
Any help? I'm wondering if there's a problem with the screen.
I may end up ditching this and getting a Xperia Neo from Newegg. Ironically, it's $50 cheaper now than the price of this X10i on eBay back in July. I'd rather not have to switch, though.
Edit: I took the case apart to check the various ribbon connectors (I don't plan on returning it anyhow). They were ok. What the eBay sellers do is they take apart the entire kit and resell the original components at a higher price. When you buy one, they grab a mainboard, stick it in the case color you want, throw in some OEM charger/cables/battery, and then ship it in the original box. That's why you might receive a black X10i while the box and its IMEI label say that it's white.
Were you able to complete a flash successfully? If so what Rom and BBand are you on?
Well, after the screen stopped working, I used Flashtool to successfully flash generic gingerbread. After it didn't work, I used PC Companion. PCC successfully repaired, but the screen still doesn't turn on. I know it is running something, though. The battery gets warm.
Edit: After repairing, I think I should be on BB 71.
Edit 2: I should mention that I have two batteries (one official, one OEM that came with the phone) and the EP900 charger. Both batteries were charged overnight, so it's not a dead battery problem.
Edit 3: I was looking at some Xperia Neo/Arc threads and they mentioned that the Trim Area may have been damage (or something like that). I'll try flashing the device with the same generic Gingerbread after I get home to see if that helps. My bootloader is still locked. Might even try a 1.6 ftf.
I've tried 2.1.A.435, 2.1.B.0.1, 3.0.1.G.0.75, and SE PCC. None are working. I'm still getting a single green LED flash and vibration. No more, no less.
Edit: Also tried SEUS. No dice.
Edit: No problems flashing anything, so it is clearly some sort of soft brick. Changing thread title to reflect this.
I hate to say this to anyone, but I think you may have a hardware problem. I hope I'm wrong but the things you have done should have fixed the problem, in my thoughts the main power board," mother board" may be faulty.... Hope I'm wrong.
Yeah, I thought all that flashing would have fixed it. I'm leaning a bit towards a bad flash or something. I'll probably return to the X10 one day and replace some parts.
I just hope the Neo I just ordered won't be as temperamental. I guess I just got lucky and never had any problems with my trusty G1.
My friend's X10i also have this problem, it will connect in flash mode ONLY when I took the battery out for 10 seconds then put it back in.
The phone doesn't have sim or sd. After I flash the generic 2.3.3 it will boot, but it will randomly shuts off and does not turn on.
I have to take out the battery for 30 minutes+ then it will boot, but it will still randomly shuts off while charging or just idling for an hour or so..

You are right, the phone died again just now. When I press the power button it does NOTHING at all, if I take out the battery for 10 sec and put it back in it will vibrate and still doesn't turn on. If I take the battery out for 30 minutes then it will boot and run perfectly fine only for an hour before it dies again.

[Q] Please read: Need help on Dell streak 5 shutting down

Ok guys this is a weird one.. My dell streak 5 wont power up and when it does the side menu bars just lights up.. Sometimes the screen logo comes up and just freezes. I thought the unit is bricked I could not get in fast boot or recovery. Tried everything one morning i was able to and was able to restore the recovery and install the stock rom and booted up fine. During use, the menu bars flickers then after a few seconds the screen shuts down. Here is the weird part, i gave it a shot from what i read on some site. I place the unit in the freezer for about 30 minutes without the battery or memory card. After i removed it i placed the battery and mem card again and long and behold the unit powered up instantly and was able to use it for only 2 to 3 minutes until it started acting up again. So again i place it in the freezer just enough to make it cold and it worked again. The only way i can make it run is putting it in the freezer. Does anyone know what could be wrong or what part i need to replace? I already had it dismantled and every parts seems ok. please advise thanks.
I believe you have a hardware, not a firmware issue. It sounds like one of the components on the motherboard has failed, causing your issue. The components are wave soldered and tiny. Difficult at best to replace.
I had something similar on a streak I got off ebay 2weeks ago, power on and use for up to 15 mins and then rebooted into a never ending loop. I had to take the battery out for approx 10 mins and then it would boot up, but the same thing just happened again. I reflashed with DSC v1.0 and I have had no problems since.
I wondered if it was overheating or the battery, but notice in the notes for DSC there is a fix for a divide by 0 bug, do it may be that. I was running official 2.2.2 before flashing. I had a few problems rebooting into the Dell booting menu but finally got there.
It may be worth a go.

You know mine did the same thing about a year ago. One day my buttons flashed and it just turned off. Now it has never turned on since then. Any ideas?

Random reboot-solved, hope this helps someone.

I know more than a little about Android. I've been hacking and Romming since back in 2007. Last Friday my 3D started rebooting randomly. I tried everything I know. Reflashed different ROMs, same thing. Reflashed the aio 2.17 update. Same thing. reflashed recovery(twrp), same thing. Got 4ext and flashed that, same thing. I didn't know what else to do. Copied all the card to PC, reformatted and copied back, same thing. I had some clues, the GB ROM i was running (CleanROM Reborn) would sometimes report 0% battery. It also would almost never reboot on the charger,
I installed a fresh ROM (MeanROM ICS) and all seemed fine till it randomly factory reset while I was at a gig Sat night!! A week or so ago I was in Austin and left it charging in the car and went swimming. When I got back the battery was reporting overheat. I cooled it off with the AC vent and all seemed well. A few days later, I had a bootloop, thought it was the kernel and did a battery pull. Somehow I must have gotten something on the contacts or didn't seat the battery. I pulled the phone out of my otterbox today and cleaned the contacts and put it back in. powered it up, haven't had a problem since (knock on wood) I'm planning now to get a replacement battery in case I fried mine but only time will tell. I hope this info will help someone at least try the simple stuff first without all the headaches I've had the past 4 days.
This issue happened to my evo 3D : it turned off without reasons.
Sometimes, the battery icon became grey so impossible to see the battery level and few minutes after, it turned off.
One day, it turned off and impossible to power up. I sent it to the repair center and the issue came from battery and other components (contacts with the battery). After other comments on the internet, I'm not the one to met this problem so if it can help you I think that some evo 3d have this issue natively.
PS : sorry for the possible mistake in this message, my english is so bad
to fix random reboots, power off your phone to clear the cache, remove the battery for 30 seconds, place it back in, and power it up. Once it boots up completely, reboot your phone (don't shut down just restart). You should be good. This clears up the bad cache that causes rebooting.

Good post. Yes, I can see this happening for sure. My battery seems a little loose but I have not had this problem. If it turns out I ever do, then this would be my first guess.
I once had an Acura Legend that for no reason would just stall on the road and die. It was very irritating. One time had to have it towed. I had it in two different garages and neither one of them could fix it and told me there was no problem. But sure enough it happened again. The problem was intermittent.
I had it towed again home to my driveway. I'm sittin in it and thinking. For some reason I started jiggling the keys in the ignition and it would start and stall just by doing that. It was a bad ignition switch. I had never had one go bad before. I replaced it myself and all was well.
I went back to one the garages I took it to and told them I found the problem and what it was. The guy said yeah I knew that was the problem and said he told me so. I could have strangled the guy. Never happened that he told me that. They had even charged me $75.00 for fixing nothing. I never went back to that garage. The other garage I didn't bother telling.
Anyway, your battery problem reminded me of all that. Something I'd rather forget about. Thanks.

Yes that would be q normal fix. I tried clearing cache and dalvik AND flashed ROMs and the problem persisted. So far, it's stayed solved. I settled in MeanROM ICS, which I highly recommend btw and have had no reboots that I didn't initiate. I just thought it wierd that a hardware issue would manifest itself that way.
Freeza's All-in-one firmware update helped me as well:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21374142#post21374142
The OP has described my experience to a T. In fact I tried all of those things in that exact order.
I have always suspected the battery but I have tried moving it around in the compartment with the phone on and can't force a reboot. Plus, when mine reboots, the screen freezes for a few seconds, which tells me it hasn't lost power and is most likely a corruption or fault of some kind.
Since upgrading the Kernel I have had less reboots, but it sill randomly happens once a week.
This has been true for 4 different ROMs now.
I have other thoughts that this is either an app crashing the kernel or my cpu can't tolerate even default speeds. None of which I have tested yet.
So friggin annoying!

Yeah, the kernel has something to do with the random reboots too. I had it with some of the dodava kernels. It would happen after unplugging from the charger. I did notice that right before, there would be touchscreen issues. Lag mostly in sipping between homescreen panels or opening apps.

Yeah, I'm running proper firmware for my ROM. That was one of the things I tried when I was figuring out wth was happening. My biggest clue was radical difference in battery level on reboots and the system ui battery reporting crashing. I knew then it wasn't the firmware.

My vibrant turns off by itself and it's unusable

Secuence of events that happened BEFORE the problem started:
1-Had a working rom of CM7.2
2-Battery was going out too quickly (7 hours or so) therefore I tried wiping battery data
3-Charged the phone
4- Unplugged it, took a picture
Problem:
One hour later I realised it was turned off...
I turned it on again, it turned off soon afterwards
for a moment it had a problem turning on (it wouldn't go past the cm logo)
afterwards it was even worse; it turned off before even passing the first logo, I couldn't even get it to recovery mode.
Solution Attempt no.1
Tried to get it to stock rom with Odin.
I was able too... but the problem persisted in the new Rom.
Solution Attempt no.2
Tried to get another rom
My situation NOW
I'm back on stock Rom. If I leave my phone alone for like an hour or so it works for 20/30 secs before turning off... After that the problem gets worse till I cannot boot.
Any ideas guys?
How old is the battery? There are apps on playstore to check your battery, thats where I would start. It doesn't sound like a Rom problem, sounds like hardware.ie battery first. Gluck.

Can't have the phone on for 1 minute, forget about downloading and using an app from the store...
I don't know if it's a hardware problem since it happen really suddenly...and just the day after I resetted the battery stats ..... Maybe it is a hardware issue but I want to be sure I tested everything first
Hey, maybe you moved on but I was having the same issue on every ROM.. stock or not. being the detective I am I investigated and inspected.
One of my battery connecting pins is loose even though it's pressed tightly in the case any moderate amount of force or impact loosens it from the contacts.
My temp solution for you would be to add something to the back cover to apply enough pressure to keep the battery still or resolder the copper connectors. The first being easier.
Hit thanks if that helps.
Invest in a new battery. Simple solution.
