[Q] MMS with AT&T - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sooooooo I had an iPhone previously and just had a standard text plan. I didn't get anything different when I picked up my streak. I know when my wife receives like picture text it's almost $4 a text. When I receive them it shows up as a link to visit, and then opens in a browser. Does anyone know if it will charge me just the same? AT&T had no idea what I was talking about, they just said I don't have an MMS plan anymore just an SMS.......which seems odd that I could send/receive picture texts with an iPhone but can't with a streak and it requires a special plan?? Fawk that! You already get enough of my money.

there is no special text message package you need to send mms messages it is standard with the regular text messaging package, if you are having trouble sending mms messages there is something going on either with your phone or the network. call att and have them troubleshoot the issue.

Yeah check the att wireless website. Go to the plans and dig for the exact details for the texting plan.
I'm not sure about mms. I think you need a data plan with your texting one. Especially with the iphone.
Basically your wife was charged 4 dollars because she only had the texting plan. If you connect to the internet when you don't have a plan they charge you a fee to connect that day plus a certain amount of charge per KB. or
the charge you the amount of KB that your media uses.

AT&T vs T-MOBILE

Hi:
Up until now, I have been using T-Mobile ever since the XDA came out.
Used a "visorphone" before that. I do NOT use T-Mobile's Internet access (T-zones) ever since I got hit with a $180+ overage charge the first month I used it.
So.
Here is my issue:
Starting a few months ago, I noticed that, even though I do NOT use T-Mobile for any Internet access (I call up my own ISP instead from the XDA), T-Mobile are charging me something like $.50 for every email sent or received from the XDA using my own ISP. I suppose they monitor the traffic or something. When I protested that they shouldn't charge me for anything Internet-related, only the minutes used to call my ISP, they told me basically that they don't give a damn what I think, and that I will continue to be charged $.50 for every email. They show up on my bill as "e-note" to the phone number "500."
I think that's ridiculous and possibly illegal since it doesn't involve their servers or their services at all, but I don't have the energy to deal with their untrained "Wireless Data Group." It would take years to explain this to them. Just getting them on the phone took over 1 hour. This is partly a warning post, that this is what T-Mobile is doing, and we should know about it. So, I am looking into switching to AT&T.
My questions for anyone reading this:
1) anyone else have that billing issue with t-mobile?
2) is at&t any better? do they charge for internet traffic even if you haven't signed up for their services?
3) i don't think i have simlock issues, the unlock util from this site says that it's already unlocked. rom is 4.00.21 ENG, radio stack 6.24.00
from yorch.net.
4) is there anything i should know? won't this t-mobile build of "windows mobile 2003" rom work with at&t ?
any info appreciated, you can email thomas at pullen.com (removed the @ for the spam bots).
thanks!
TMO is pretty bad, iv experienced their levels of ignorance too, but once in a while, u can incounter sumone who knows alot about what they do
you should have never used tzones (if it wasnt unlimited) for transfering big amounts of data, thats why u got charged so much, for going over the allowd data amount
when connecting to your own ISP, are u connecting using THEIR # ? ... if so, then i dont know where TMO gets these ideas 4 charging u extra + the phone call
to unlock u need to go back to a 2002 rom, with the unlock software
ur build will work, but it would be better to switch to 4.00.05 , since u wont need all the useless TMO apps and what not
Hey tpullen,
Sorry to hear about your terrible time with T-Mobile.
Q: What type of plan do you have with T-Mobile?
If its only a voice plan with no data the .50 sounds about right and will be the same if you move over to AT&T. As a matter of fact AT&T's data charges are higher.
It doesn't matter that you're calling your own ISP, the fact still remains you're sending/receiving data on a voice only plan.
HTH
thanks
hey:
thanks for the replies. to answer your questions:
i had the t-mobile 3,000 minutes for $49 plan. it is only free long distance for the southeast u.s.; i think it's called a 'neighborhood' plan.
no data at all in my plan; i would call my own isp and surf the web and check email. only about 3 months ago t-mobile started charging me to check email, but not for the web. my complaint is that i am using my own isp, and the call comes out of my minutes. yes, it's sending data with a voice-only plan, but hey! i have a dial-up phone line, nothing fancy, a land line in my house. it's voice-only. if i plug a modem into my home phone line and call my isp, should i expect to get a bill from my phone company for every email i look at? to my way of thinking, and anyone is free to disagree, if i'm not USING your services then i don't want to PAY for your services. unless it is a t-mobile email, web, or proxy server i'm talking to, i don't expect to pay t-mobile. the minutes were already being deducted from my available minutes. that's all i should have to pay.
i don't think that's so outrageous.
i did unlock my phone with the xda dev build, then went back to the same tmobile windows mobile 2003 build. i wasn't sure if the xda "stays unlocked" once you unlock it and then put a new rom on, but it does.
now i have an at&t sim, and it works well enough, but the sort-of-funny thing is that you apparantly can NOT just call your own isp with at&t.
i can't seem to get a connection to work. so i don't know. maybe i will stay with at&t since they, according to their sales literature anyway, have a data network that's like 3 times faster than t-mobile's data network.
of course it's more $ for them.
whatever the case, i have 30 days to try at&t with no obligation, cancel any time, owe them nothing. everyone has that option right now, in fact, due to the new ftc "local number port" thing happening.
i'll let ya'll know how it goes if i stick with at&t. i can always stay with t-mobile, but i'm not sure if that's a good idea.

Sounds like you're talking about the EDGE service. Yeah, like 4 times the cost of T-Mobile's unlimited plan. I think I'll stick to the cheaper slower service.

Owe them nothing?! You might want to read that literature again. You'll not pay a cancellation fee nor an activation fee, but you will owe them for the prorated amount of time you had service, and any other additional fees that you use. This is pretty standard in the wireless industry. So if you go over your prorated minutes for the month, you owe them airtime charges. Happened to me, so just be careful.
bye bye at&t
hi arkhangel:
yes, you are correct:
4. Every new customer gets a 30 day risk free trial. When you purchase a phone and activate service at an AT&T Wireless store or at attwireless.com, you can return your undamaged phone for a refund within the first 30 days and pay only for airtime and usage charges. It’s just one more way we can earn your trust.
so it is not without charge, and thank god i only made one 6-minute call.
as far as the EDGE network goes, it was so-so...i only viewed 2 webpages with it, they loaded pretty much as quickly as with any other data service over the xda...and the funny thing is that it consumed apparantly almost 2 mb to do so.
i am pretty frustrated now, the at&t customer service has been pretty rotten, but t-mobile isn't too great either.
i'm calling verizon next, to compare...

The phone is programmed to send an SMS to T-Mobile every time you reboot your PPCPE. These show up as e-notes to 500 just as you describe. Compare the timing of your email use vs. the timing of your reboots and see where the e-notes are coming from. I think you can purchase a bundle of a bunch (500?) of SMS messages (aka e-notes) for something like $2.99, so you could cap your cost that way.
You should also be aware that T-Mobile has gone to a flat rate for GPRS at $19.95 for unlimited internet. The comparable plan with AT&T is something like $80.

[Help] putting Eris on PagePlus

Hey all,
I need some help getting my Eris on the PagePlus network.
http://www.pagepluscellular.com/
I bought my Eris used and with no contract. Clean ESN as well.
I called my local PagePlus office, but they won't have anyone that can program the Eris for another month or so. I can't wait that long.
Does anyone here know what I need to do to get it setup correctly?
The rep mentioned it has something to do with "opera mini" and not actually flashing the phone. Just setting up the info.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Even if I have to go through a different office. I just need this setup ASAP!
Also... I am going for the 1,200 Minutes / 1,200 SMS/MMS / 50 MB Data = $29.95 plan. This seems to be their best data plan. Anyone using this service able to use it with the Eris well? I will ONLY download apps and big stuff on my wifi network. I am not a data hog and would only check emails while away from wifi.
Thnx in advance!

Just go on ebay and look for "page plus activation" pay the 1.00 and give the ESN. I have the eris on pp but i cant get mms to work (most likely its me... )
Thnx Joey =) Doing this now =)
WOW! This couldn't have been easier!
I bought an eBay auction for $1.99 because the $1.00 auctions were for new activation with a new number. I ported my number over from Sprint. The auction led me to: www.KittyWireless.com
INCREDIBLE SERVICE!!! She is a one person operation. I know this because she has a LIVE chat thing on her site for answering questions. She handled all the calls and setup between Sprint & PagePlus. All I had to do was supply basic info. Uber easy.
On top of that, she offers a little discount on the normal monthly service! Normal price for the "Talk N Text 1200" is $29.95. My cost was $26.00 ... awesome.
That auction was the BEST $1.99 I ever spent =)
As for the setup of my Eris in the PagePlus network? Simple. From the time I bought the eBay auction and filled out my info on Kitty's website... I was making calls in under 2 hours. All I had to do was wait for her email, put the battery back in the Eris, and dial *22890. Everything works perfectly. Voice, Data, SMS, MMS. No problems at all.
Because of only getting 50MB with the plan, I will use it sparingly. I have access to WiFi 95% of my day. No biggie.
I am really liking this service so far and I HIGHLY recommend www.KittyWireless.com to ANYONE who doesn't want a contract. but DOES want excellent service!!!
(i know... i sound like a commercial... but she is THAT good)

So you got mms without doing anything other than activating? I have been unable to get mms working at all... I really think I need my account reset with page plus then.
Just call Page Plus and tell them to activate data / mms on your phone. Usually it's not automatically activated unless you call in and tell them. Likely they will tell you that it is active, or it can't be activated on your phone, just politely insist that they activate it. The CSR's aren't too bright.
I went to kitty and did an ESN reset. That fixed my mms issue.
Just trying to help next time
just pm and ill activate at no charge
I was wondering i have 2 droid eris phones and im going to be leaving verizon but i know they wont clear my esn, since i will be putting my verizon bill in my bankruptcy will i be able to go to Pages plus and use their service, also ive seen companies that UNLOCK your phone will i be able to do that with my eris droids. Im new to all this stuff and trying to figure it out.

If your phones don't have a clean ESN with Verizon, then they won't have a clean ESN with PagePlus. PagePlus is a Verizon MVNO. You would have to flash your devices to another carrier such as Cricket.
I transferred over my 2 droids to Pages plus from verizon, i took 2 old phones i had and activated them in the place of the droids and kept the data plan. the ESN #s came back clean with Pages plus so i transfered them and activated them and bought airtime they now work on Pages plus.
Now could Verizon come back and block those ESN #s in say a month and could i get kicked off of Pages plus?
Since i now have them active with Pages plus can verizon do anything to those phones or are they untouchable?

I don't know if they'll still be able to ban the ESN or not, but if they are able to do this and do it, then you will not be automatically kicked off; you will still be able to use your phone. However, if you ever have to deactivate and reactivate your phone on the network (for an issue or something), you won't be able to get it reactivated.
Rooted?
i have a rooted eris. i called the page plus and they said my esn showed an unknown device. Can i still activate it?
You can activate it. It is unknown because its not officially supported.

I put an eris on PP when they first came out, worked great. I looking at buying another soon. Now the down side, Verizon changes the access at will regarding what PP can put on their net. If you already have it paid and making calls on PP, they are still allowing this. and the dealer is right, it is as simple as configuring the device to find PP when you go to log on. I have the 1200/1200 on my HTC Ozone and it works perfect. soooo, stay in touch and if i get this eris tonight I will try to get it configured and let you know the steps.

There are several great threads on Howardforums regarding how best to set up an Android phone to stay within the 50mb, for those looking for that info. I'm actually here now researching and looking to buy an Eris to activate like this for a friend. Which Rom are most of you using with pageplus and why?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I don't think any rom really changes anything with page plus. I use celb froyo personally I download launcher pro I like that better than adw which comes with the rom. Just get 3g watchdog and you're good to go!

[Resolved] AT&T killed my texting plan

When I got my GSII a week ago Sunday, the store rep assured me that my voice, data and messaging plans were all intact and good to go. I have the $5-200 messaging plan, since I don't use texting that often — 100 or so on a heavy month.
Today I was told that a cow-orker had sent me a text calling off work tonight. I didn't receive the message, so I tried sending him one, but didn't get a reply. I asked another person to send me a message, but with no result.
I went to the AT&T store, where they said for some unknown reason when my account was switched to the new phone, my messaging capabilities were killed outright. Because AT&T has decided that $20 unlimited messaging is the only true path to follow, the store reps have no option for re-adding my grandfathered plan. As it turns out, their overlords on the phone also aren't allowed to put it back.
They told me my options were to either go per-use or pay for the $20 plan. I told them their options were to give me back my old plan, credit my account for $360 (the $15 difference in plans for 24 months) or cancel my new contract so I can go to Verizon.
Another phone call later, the rep tells me that my problem has been moved up the chain and that some supreme overlord has to make the decision to reinstall my $5 plan. She said my plan should be restored on Thursday and that my per-use texts until then will be credited. It still sounds suspiciously like "<BLEEP> you and your crummy low-use texting."
Updates as they occur.

Good for you, all three of these choices seem logical (not excessive) and for good reason. AT&T messed up, they need to make it right.
Or you could get free unlimited texting by using one of those free texting apps. I personally used Textfree and textPlus. I prefer textPlus much more because it actually notifies me when I receive a new message, unlike Textfree. It also looks better IMO. Of course all of these apps will use data, but it's neglectable since it uses so little.

Let us know how this resolves this is pretty bogus, but you are handling it a lot better then I would that is for sure.
I wonder if one can actually live w/o SMS plan at all? I mean you have google talk / email - covers the same... I noticed since on Android I tend to not use sms at all.
just a thought.
They did the same thing to me with my unlimited internet 3 months ago when i switched from my iphone 4 to the captivate while i was waiting for the Sgs2 to come out... Then 3 weeks ago they said i burned thru the 2gb a month plan they had put me in, in less than 2 days and also the extra 1gb they give you for 10 dollars... Im a very heavy user and i even tether and even in one year in one whole month i never got to 2gb... Finally when i said i wasnt dealing with that and i was going to cancel my account and head to sprint out of nowhere the "manager" can credit my account and put my unlimited plan that they took off 3 months ago

I feel as though I have to be polite and controlled, otherwise my unlimited data plan will disappear.
It may indeed be time to consider a move to data-based SMS.
To be fair, it doesn't seem like it's AT&T's fault, but rather the retailer you got your phone from. Unless it was an AT&T retail store (Not an authorized retailer)..
But regardless, your suggestions are pretty logical, and aren't too hard to give from AT&T.
But I'm pretty sure you're going to get your plan back. They still have it available to higher-ups to add on.
Yes, it was an AT&T store. I tried Wally World once and it was a fiasco. I prefer to deal with the company directly because of situations just like this. I think the store rep called it a "core store" when she made her first call.
I must say that the in-store people have always been friendly and helpful to me.

That's what happened.. because AT&T wasn't ready to do all the switches. I learnt my lesson about 5 years ago... NEVER go get a phone on the day of release as AT&T and Partners have NOT gotten their "system" in "sync"
Example, if I was to "keep" my "grandfather" unlimited plan, I HAD to wait till their system is in sync. Why I didn't get my SGS2 phone till Monday. Because on Sunday, THAT OPTION wasn't available. And they didn't know if people wanted to keep the "grandfather" unlimited the only option on that Sunday was for the sale rep to CALL AT&T and make that change, because no one from AT&T told them that either.
I had exactly the same problem happen to me (except I bought my phone from Amazon Wireless). The first time I called they "fixed" the issue by putting me on the $20 unlimited plan. Later, my wife called back (she's the mean one in these situations) and my $5 plan was restored immediately.
Hopefully everything works out for you as well.
My 200/5 was removed as well. The way it was explained was that BestBuy (where I did the upgrade b/c they have SGS2 in stock), did not have the ability to process/retain the old plan. I did online chat with ATT and they re-add the plan in 10 min.
I noticed that in my online account now shows a $35 Smartphone plan with 200 messages. But, my current plan is still shown as $30 smartphone and $5 200 messages plan.
Good luck.
This happened to a buddy of mine. He's on a recent messaging feature so he didn't have the problem that you did.
I'm beginning to despise AT&T. Every time you turn around, they're trying to change your plan or not revert it back if its removed for some reason. They claim they'll honor your ability to keep features/plans, but jump through hoops trying to do the opposite.
I got my phone Friday from BB and confirmed with the guy I wanted to keep everything like it was. Well I sent text messages to two friends of mines about 30 mins after I got my phone. Didn't hear back. Talked to them today and they said they didn't get the messages. I tried ago and they still didn't get them. I had one of them text me and I didn't get it. I than text myself and didn't get that either.
I called AT&T and they said that the reason I couldn't get or send text messages was because when I got my phone Friday my text option was removed. She said she wasn't sure if I could get my 200 for $5.00 plan back. She checked into it and called me back and sent me a text and said everything was set. I sent a test text to one of my friends and she got it. I also received a text from another friend so it works. It didn't take days to get it back. It took less than 1/2 hour.

Group Conversations

Does anyone else notice that when a group conversation (MMS) is started, and AT&T recipients are included, that they won't get your message, but you can receive theirs?
Example:
My family mostly has iPhones, 1 is on sprint, rest are on AT&T. My Brother has the rezound as well and when he is in the same conversation, He gets it, as well as the person on sprint.
Anyway, if you have any suggestions, Or ideas. Please, Let me know.
Thanks!
Sorry I have not noticed this, mostly cause my whole family has Verizon and 3/4 of hubby's family has Verizon LOL
That would suck if it is true though!
I have a buddy with and iPhone on AT&T. It is sometimes days before he gets an mms from me. Sometimes he never gets it at all. I have noticed this but I thought it was just me. This happened to me on my ERIS. I don't know if it has happened on my Rezound yet though.

Yes, I sent a group msg to 4 people and the only one who never got it was my friend who has an iphone on AT&T. He also said his sister had to download the msg, she's on some sort of android phone, don't know which carrier. One of my other friends who got it is on a dumbphone on T-Mobile and the other is on a Moto Droid, don't know what carrier.
I sent an MMS to 5 people 2 days ago when I got my new 65" LED TV. I sent it to my dad who has an iPhone 4 on AT&T, my brother who is on my plan with an X2, my buddy who also has a rezound, my mom who is on my plan with the Dinc2, and my Girlfriend who has a wannabe smartphone from Metro PCS, everyone got it just fine.

Does anyone else notice that when a group conversation (MMS) is started, and AT&T recipients are included, that they won't get your message, but you can receive theirs?
Example:
My family mostly has iPhones, 1 is on sprint, rest are on AT&T. When they send a message in their group conversation (to which I am included) I get it, But when i reply, It sends to all, but The AT&T people don't get it. My Brother has the rezound as well and when he is in the same conversation, He gets it, as well as the person on sprint.
Anyway, if you have any suggestions, Or ideas. Please, Let me know.
Thanks!

Interesting ... I had the opposite problem. My friend with an iPhone sent a group MMS on Thanksgiving to a bunch of his family and friends, and the only way I knew about it was that some of the reply-all responses came to me too and I saw the list of numbers. I never got his original message.
My condolences to all that have family still on iphones. Maybe one day they will come to see the light.

lol, my dad's IT guy convinced him to get them for his entire company when they first came out(iPhone 4) and everytime I show my dad something on my phone he regrets the iPhone. The only reason he keeps AT&T is because the only place in the world Verizon doesn't have service is at his cabin in Irons, Michigan, he is there more often than here. Although, up there he is on Edge, lol. Once I go up and my phone works he will dump AT&T and Apple both.

[Q] GT10.1 as a phone

Hey guys, I know there are other threads like this in the 7 inch but "this may be crazy, so call me maybe." but all terrible pop culture jokes aside, I am planning on using a GT 10.1 as a phone. I current have a Droid Charge on Verizon, which I am fond of, but I am always looking for something new/different.
My plan is to save lots of money by doing this, be quite unique, and functional.
Yesterday I purchased a GT10.1 with service capabilities (Is that the 10.1v?) and it should be here next week. And no I did not pay $800 from Verizon. Also, my main reason for this is I'm that weird person that doesn't like their phone in their pocket. I am always checking for it because I can't feel it. With this, I will always have it in my hand or somewhere close. *NOTE* I'm not attached to it, I just like to know where it is at all times.
I was mainly posting to see if anyone has done this with the 10.1 and any problems they ran across, or tips, tricks, anything to help me out on this transition. I will be dropping my unlimited plan to save money, and getting a 1 or 2GB plan, seeing as I am on WiFi 99% of the time being at a college campus.
If anyone has other program suggestions than the following, please step in. That is why i'm posting! If all possible I would like to keep my phone number, I'm not sure if that is possible due to me switching contracts and not having a mobile plan.
As of now, I plan on doing the following:
Galaxy Tab 10.1 16GB
-Caller: GrooveIP (Uses Google Voice) (Or should I use something along the lines of skype?)
-Messenger: N/A (Need one, Not sure what yet)
-3G/4G card from my Charge
I will root and theme etc, that's a given!
I know this is a giant wall of text, I tried to break it up a bit, but thanks for reading and I hope I get some good feedback and helpful tips.
I do something similar but not on the tab. I have an unlocked galaxy nexus gsm phone, no contract needed. I use tmobile prepaid, $30 per month for 5gb, at 4g (hspa) speed, then unlimited throttled. But it comes with only 100 minutes per month, so must be supplemented with calls over data. I have used grooveip and talkatone. The free talkatone app seemed to be about the same quality as grooveip. The monthly $2 high quality talkatone may be a little better. The quality of Skype is much much better than both, and since most everyone I talk to have Skype I just use that for free. But if you get a google voice number, you can use grooveip or talkatone as a phone too. Google voice will also work for sms. I only use that app, never the phone messenger app, I like it so much. No mms though. Also keep in mind data speeds matter. With 4g speeds you are ok. May have trouble in a moving car, I'm not a big talker so I haven't really noticed. At 3g speeds it will probably still work but quality will be worse. No way to use it if you drop to edge. So this is what I do on the phone. If I need data on the tab, I turn on the wifi widget in the nexus phone and voila I have data on my wifi tab. No expensive tablet/contract, no expensive monthly bills, $30/ month gets me what I need. You do have to pay a premium to escape the carrier contract, but think how fast you make back the extra cost of the phone. The galaxy nexus with jelly bean is only $350 in the google play store, not a bad deal at all.
Thanks a ton Kisrita, I bought my GT10.1v for $350, which seemed like a pretty good deal. And TMobile in our area does not have 4g, and what little service they have, sucks. And that helps me out a lot, I'd like to use skype a lot, but the hassle of this day and age at least for my generation, is not a lot of people USE the Skype on their phone. They have it, but they don't have it open to be "online" everyone just texts via messenger, so in theory, to communicate, I also have to be on a "Messenger" but knowing that GV can work for SMS is a good thing.
Sorry, nevermind, didn't read carefully enough.
All is good. Thanks for the free bump atleast!
Well, My tablet gets here today. Still looking for some answers!
I don't know if you knew this, but the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (GT-P51xx) works as a phone and for SMS.

However, if you must go with the 10.1v, you have the option of doing the SMS mod on it and using Whatsapp as a primary messenger. It's fairly popular and a lot of people have it. For phone calls, I believe work is on to enable phone calls, and it may be possible some time in the very near future. Until then, you could always use Skype with a Skype paid number for incoming and outgoing calls through 3G/4G. Google Voice also has some interesting similar options.

No SIM card?
I'm not sure if this applies. Have 10.1, but it has no visible SIM or SDCard setup. Would like to see if some kinda way to run my T Mobile service through it. Is this possible if I can't put in a sim card?
