[Q] What do I need to do to get my number ported to ATT? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have a EVO4g on sprint, but the Atrix is bringing me back to ATT. I was wondering what do I need to do to have my number ready to be ported when the Atrix releases and I pick one up? I already know about paying sprint off, etc.

all you should need to do is call up AT&T and tell them you want to port your number to them when you create your account.
They should take care of the rest for you. I don't know however what you will need to do with Sprint in terms of paying any etf.

Thanks, Yeah I'm going to call sprint and pay the penalty

Don't call sprint yet. Get the phone at AT&T (please go to a corporate store and give a rep the commission. We need to eat too), bring your Sprint bill (for the account number), and as long as you're the Sprint account holder, you're golden. You'll need to provide the billing address and social security number that's on the Sprint account, as well as the PIN that you use to access your Sprint account when you call.
Once you port, Sprint will automatically cancel your account and send you a bill for the termination fee. If you cancel BEFORE you go to AT&T, you will lose your phone number.

May I suggest? Get a free Google Voice account. Once you have done that, you "own" the GVoice phone number, and you can have it push to any other phone number(s) you choose.
So you give people the GVoice number, and push that to your cell phone. If you change providers, change numbers, change whatever...you don't have to do anything except change the number assignment in GVoice. No one has to know.
And if you find the new phone number is getting wrong numbers from folks who think they are still calling the old owner? GVoice can block those calling numbers--and just those callers--so you don't pay for their calls, either.
An incredibly powerful service, and an example of what ANY telco or celco could provide for your phone, if they really wanted your business instead of your wallet.

[Q] Sprint Upgrade procedures? (help please)

So I preordered my evo 3d from a sprint corporate store, got the $50 giftcard and am #2 on the list. (did this the first day they started preorders).
Now there's an issue.. My father, the owner of the sprint account is away and wont arrive back in time for a week or so after the 24th.. Which is rather annoying.
So my question is, can I renew the contract without him? I currently have a htc touch pro, so I dont think I'd be changing the plan only renewing it, my line is eligible for an upgrade, I just dont know if I can do it without him being there and if I can what I would need.
Thanks
Maybe if you have him call Sprint and they notate the account... at least by calling they will let you know your options.
first question would be are you on a seperate line? or is it a single line in his name?
secondly if your on a "family plan" being on a secondary line are you a authorized user? such as are you able to call the customer support and discuss the contract or make changes. If you are not either in any of these cases you will most likely not be able to pick up the phone without him being how you would be altering the contract.
Please note this is not "officially" from sprint just a sprint user and a perception from experience. (not 100% sure)
Im sure he could authorize you to make changes to the account etc, if you can get him to call. Then he can just remove you if he wants after you get the phone.
if you have the pin or security question you should be okay. unless the account is notated by strict guidelines by the owner, like, " no changes can be made unless Mr. El kido is in the store"
I'm in the same situation on a family plan and have dealt with this in the past as well. They have always asked me for the PIN or "security phrase" in order to make changes. Just ask for this information from your dad and you should be good to go.

AT&T Employees: Question on the $100 new line promo

So there's the reatilmenote $100 off but it only works on new accounts or adding a line to existing accounts. On my current account I have two lines both off contract. Could I create a new line and carry over my existing number and then cancel the existing off-contract one?

no, you would have to cancel your old number and keep the new number... also that discount doesn't usually work if you have what is called a FAN on your account, giving you a monthly company discount.
Is this only applicable if you order directly from ATT? I pre-ordered (did the add a line) from Best Buy for the $50 rebate plus the free case. I'm assuming I cannot get this discount?

correct... http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/deals/100savings.jsp
could you not "port" the old number to the new line/ thus cancelling the old line in the process?
OK thanks.
Since you are form ATT, can you confirm a few things that support told me?
1. I have the unlimited grandfathered data plan. Will I be able to transfer this to my Note? I was told yes.
2. This is a bit more convoluted but I'll try to explain. Currently I have 2 phones (an HTC Inspire which is what I am replacing plus an iPhone 4s) on a family plan, none of which are eligible for an upgrade. They're both smartphones with data plans. This is what the ATT rep. told me to do to get the best deal since I can't upgrade:
a. Add a line and buy the Galaxy Note, which requires me to choose a data plan for it.
b. When I activate the Note, have the phone number and unlimited data plan from my HTC Inspire transferred to the Galaxy Note.
c. Take the new line I added, and apply it to an old "dumbphone" that I own, which allows me to drop the new data plan I added.
This leaves me with 3 phone numbers but only 2 data plans. I was told that data plans are not part of the 2 year contract, it's just a requirement of having a smartphone. So if this works, my total additional monthly expenditure is the $9.99 for the new line - again no data cost since it's associated with a dumbphone.
I hope that makes sense. This idea was from someone at ATT customer service, so I assume it's legit. My only concern is that since I have to activate it at Best Buy, they will screw it up and won't be able to drop the data plan or screw up transferring my unlimited data plan to the Note.
Thanks for your help.

if he was switching carriers yes, but he already has at&t. you can't port a number to the same carrier.

Yes, this is true, yes this will work, but many reps at least in a corporate store will not do this. You will have to get customer care to do it for you. You are signing a 2 year contract for a phone knowing it requires a 2 year data plan. While it is true if you switch to a phone that does not support data that it can be removed but not many reps will do it, especially if it is right away after getting the new phone which required it. However, since you are getting it at best buy, they prob won't care and will just do it for you.
Yes, if you get the data plan removed, you will need an IMEI number off your basic phone to do so.
I hope that makes sense. This idea was from someone at ATT customer service, so I assume it's legit. My only concern is that since I have to activate it at Best Buy, they will screw it up and won't be able to drop the data plan or screw up transferring my unlimited data plan to the Note. Best buy will activate it on the new number, leave it there then go to at&t store and have them swap it, or call at&t customer care to swap it because then you don't have to worry about a mistake. Also your current phone number you are planning to use the note on will need a new LTE sim card, if you haven't gotten a new SIM in the last year or so then it prob isn't an LTE SIM. Your note cannot even be switched to your old number until the SIM is updated, the system will not allow it. It will just flag errors on your account and put a data block on your line until you do.
Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the thorough reply AEDan!
With regards to your comments about the SIM, I assume the Note will come with one right? were you just saying that so that I wouldn't take the SIM out of my Inspire and put it in the Note and then wonder why it didn't work? I got my current SIM 1 year ago so I'll just use whatever comes with the Note.
I will do what you say and call customer care and have them move all the numbers around. that way I don't have to mess with Best Buy making a mistake and potentially losing my unlimited data plan or something.
Thanks again!
Got it, thank you! Guess I'll either have to go Best Buy or keep crossing my fingers on Amazon Wireless if I want to save any money . . . kind of peeved they've not mentioned it all! I've called a few times and they just keep telling me that if it's not on the website then they don't know anything

Yes, but you will most likely still need another SIM, because the SIM that comes with the note will be assigned to whatever number is added to your account by adding a line like you are doing. You can not reassign a sim to another number. Basically that new sim that comes with the note will go in your "dumbphone" on the second line, you will need another new LTE sim for your current number you are putting the note on unless you already have a LTE sim.

These pictures are what the LTE sims look like, with the halved colors on the bottom. Some of them are completely halved colored without the white bar on the top, depends on which of the sim card brands you have as they used a few different suppliers. Easiest way to spot them as well as they don't say at&t on them, they just show the globe. LTE SIMs are backwards compatible will all other phones.

AEDan,
The SIM in my HTC Inspire is like the one in your second picture marked as LTE SIM. So more than likely I will be able to take the SIM from the Inspire and put it in the Note?
Is not being able to reassign a SIM to another number a new thing? When I moved my wife from an iPhone 3G to the 3GS, I called ATT and they just swapped the numbers associated with each SIM. they told me that was the "correct" way to do it and I should not manually switch the SIMs. these were of course the old style non-LTE SIMs.

[Q] Canceling Sprint Contract = Canceled Integrated Google Voice Number? (Upgrade)

I've been wondering.
When I signed up to Google Voice, I had a Google Voice # & a Sprint #.
Once the Sprint Integration with Google Voice came, I ported the Sprint Number into Google Voice & lost the Google Voice given number after 90 days, no biggie.
Now my Sprint Number is a Google Voice Number.
My Question is, if I were to get out of my Sprint Contract (via buyout/ETF), would I lose/keep the integrated Sprint # that's been ported to Google Voice?
Would I be able to redo the integration steps, effectively keeping the phone number for a newer EVO?
P.S. No I'm not leaving Sprint, the motive is in my signature. I plan on rejoining, the same day I cancel. My yearly upgrade strategy.

did the same as you did, but once i re did my set up, I did not load GV as part of a sprint set up, but did it manually where it will " skip" the sprint influence.
If you do and run in to any issues, make sure you set it up manual, it should release the # and if it doesn't , well then the above statment is correct , you will need to call sprint...
Z
If you have your Google voice number tied into your sprint number and are thinking to cancel with Sprint.... Just untie your Google voice number to Sprint... There is an option for that when you log into Google voice with a browser.
Here is the how to:
http://support.google.com/voice/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1207078
That's a good idea....
Guys, the point is not to untie the number, it's just wanting to know if you'd be able to keep the integration, which I'm also curious of!

That's the only part I know , you do retain your history. So when loyalty perks return, you'll still have them.
Retentions told me that aspect was safe when I upgraded via buyout to the 3D last year.
When I signed up for Sprint a year ago. I got the EVO 3d for 50 bucks. after3 months I Sold my EVO shiftto radioshack for 185 dollars. Added a new line and got a EVO 3d. Well I suspendedthe new line and put the 3d on my orginal line.
Well i called complained about my new line never getting suspended. They took it off completely lol.
I just did exactly this and was worried about losing my number. Here's the step-by-step process:
(If you haven't already, attach your new phone/service to Google Voice before starting this process.)
1) Login to Google Voice and click Disable next to the Sprint Integration.
2) It will warn you that Google Voice is going to lose the Sprint number, which sounds scary - proceed anyway, you'll rescue it shortly.
3) Proceeding hands the number back to your Sprint account. You now need to port it.
4) Click Get a Google Voice Number
5) Click Use My Existing Mobile Number
This begins the porting process. Google is going to have you enter payment info to pay a $20 porting fee. You'll need your Sprint Account Number and your Sprint phone on hand. You can get your Sprint Account Number by logging into sprint.com or by calling them.
The porting takes 24 hours to port the number and 3 business days to switch text messages over. Interestingly once it completes, the Sprint account is cancelled - you don't have to call them to cancel. However, I called them anyway, and they said to call them after 5 business days to verify it really is cancelled. So perhaps you're best calling them just to verify they do their job.
Thanks man,
I hope this goes smoothly as I'll be buying out of the contract & upgrading within the same day.
I'm going through the same thing. The advise given is the best: Port your number to GV and just get a new number from the new carrier. Worth the $20 I guess.

[Q] switching phones on a corporate account

So I have an EVO LTE, and have a couple questions.
Okay, so my question is, if I'm on a corporate/business account, how do a switch phones if said business is closed? Like, say, I drop my phone on the weekend or something? Here's a bit of back story:
My university offers their own wireless program (sprint, vzw, att) and I picked sprint. I pay a discounted rate, and I get corporate PRL's, which makes me assume they have one massive corporate account and they sell phones from it to students. Seems semi-not-legal, but meh, my phone plan is like $60 a month so I can't complain at all.
I'm wondering how I can switch phones on my own. Before noob-flaming me, keep in mind I've had GSM phones my entire phone-life and just swapped out sims. This is my first CDMA phone. If my phone were to break, let's say, during spring break when my university is closed down, what could I do? Am I still able to call sprint and activate a backup phone? Or am I totally SOL? I'm not sure of Sprint's corporate limitations. Anybody have any idea of whether or not I could actually switch phones without going through my university? If so, how would I do that?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Regardless of what kind of account it is, you need to do an esn swap on it. This has to be done at Sprint's end, via an online tool, chat, customer care, store, etc. I have dealt with business accounts before, they are similar to personal accounts. The chat on business accounts is way better they don't treat you like a newb & it's way quicker. I'm not sure on a corporate account, I would have to think if you have a corporate account you would not be responsible for the bill at which point you would have to contact whoever is in charge of the phone program. If you have a login/pass to sprint to pay your bill you can just do the esn swap yourself. I use the online tool and if it's down I use chat. I can't stand calling or going to the store so I use other methods. Another tip the online esn swap tool works best if you are swapping for similar phones. Example, Evo LTE to Samsung GSIII. These are both LTE phones so they are provisioned similarly. Now if you are going from say evo LTE to an older evo 3D or wimax phone I would just skip the tool and use chat. It will prompt you to change your plan because technically you are changing your plan even though your really not. I wish sprint would fix this but they haven't at least last time I checked. So as long as you pay your own bill you can do the ESN swap yourself via the methods described above. Keep in mind if it's 3 in the morning on Sat you are at the mercy of the online tool which a lot of times Sprint takes the site down at night for maintenance or you will run into issues if you are swapping LTE to Wimax or non-4g phone since they provision these phones differently.

Thank you for the information! I heard that there was an online tool thing, I pay my own bill and get one monthly, so I'm assuming I'm considered "responsible" for my own account. I may test this out by switching to my roommate's S3 via online, and if that doesn't work, via chat. I just don't want to be SOL this spring break, especially since I'll be traveling haha

[Q] Question about ordering from TMobile and activation process

So I want to take advantage of the HTC One $100 trade-up promotion which has a purchase deadline of 5/19. I ordered the unlocked version from Letstalk.com and they pushed it back until the end of May. I'm thinking of ordering it from T-Mobile's website instead. My question is in regards to the activation process.
My current AT&T's billing cycle ends on May 27th. Thus, I don't want to switch service until then, but I must meet the 5/19 HTC One Trade-up promotion deadline of 5/19. Can I go ahead and order from T-Mobile, get the device, and not activate it until 5/27? The number porting doesn't happen until I activate right? Or does it happen as soon as I checkout from the T-Mobile site?
You can skip the number porting when you order. I had to in order to get my phone to actually ship. When you activate, you'll get a temp number. Simply call t-mobile, say you want to port, give them the info for both accounts, and you'll be ported in the next 24 hours (aka when original carrier gives up the number).
Just did it today, extremely painless.

Hm. Would service for TMobile start when I activate then? I don't want service to overlap. Would your method allow me to receive the phone, sit on it until the end of May, call in to activate, then port my #, then have my TMobile plan start at the end of May?
I don't know that, as I haven't gotten a bill so I've been unable to determine if it started when shipped or when activated.

So I called T-Mobile and asked about activating once I received the equipment. They said they can do a delay activation so I can go ahead and place the order now for the HTC One. I did. They said I can call in at the end of the month to activate service and port my number! I should be getting the phone next week.
Now this brings up a new dilemma. My original intent was just to get the phone and go with T-Mobile's $30 prepaid plan. The T-Mobile stores either wouldn't sell me the phone straight up or are out of stock. What is stopping me from just getting the phone, never activating it with the $50 plan, and just activate it with the $30 plan instead?
By the way, I learned the entire remaining balance on the phone becomes due once you cancel service with them. I keep hearing people say you continue to pay the $20/month for the phone. Nope!
