I've searched all over the web for this and all over XDA and there has been nothing conclusive. Hoping we can find something usable here.
Basically, market hangs on starting downloads and does not progress. I can tie the failure only occurring after I install the V1.1.0_r2 update and ensuring top to bottom I have met all the requirements. I work on about 4 NCs for family members and one of our has gotten V1.1.0_r2 working with Market fully functional. 2 of the NC's fail Market and have not tested the 4th since generally, only Market fails but all other functions on the NC work perfectly.
My system:
- 1.0.1 Auto Nootered
- Gingerbread keyboard
- Sideload hack
- Telephony Hack
Here are the symptoms I have found:
- All worked fine on 1.0.1
- Initial install of 1.1 worked for a bit but crashed on adfree host file update and did not work thereafter
- First notice was on Facebook download
- market.android.com can still push installs
What has not worked:
- Clearing Market data
- Clearing download manager
- Starting and stopping downloads
- ejecting or unmounting SD card
- fixing permissions does not work
I've seen this happen on 2 different Nook Colors but not on a 3rd and my personal SC I've repeated the failure across 3 complete factory wipes and resets with the same end result of a working Market that gets stuck on Download Starting.
Any ideas?
You don't have an Android phone, do you? This happens on every device recently, something with the market, has nothing to do with the Nook.
I disagree. I have a DINC and several nooks and I can force this to happen on the nook where the market works fine until I update to 1.1
I was having the same market download behaviour you describe the first few times I attempted a 1.1 upgrade. The thing that finally did work for me was doing a complete wipe of all data, all cache and complete factory reset, even back to the stock recovery partition. Then walked through the upgrade setting things up by hand and not restoring anything from backup. The market has worked fine for me ever since.
You mentioned doing complete factory wipes and resets, and if they were this kind of thorough wipe-everything back to out-of-the-box state reset and not just a restore from an old backup... then I don't know what to tell you. I assumed there must have been something buried in my data that was somehow causing the problem in 1.1, but maybe I just got lucky that last time.
fwiw, here's what I did in case you spot any differences that might help.
- "Erase and Deregister Device"
- wiped dalvik cache and cache partition from clockwork recovery
- used dd to rewrite boot and system partitions to stock out-of-the-box state (1.0.1 version)
- rebooted and went through B&N "first time" setup process, registered with my B&N account.
- auto-nootered
- rebooted and went through google's "first time" setup process.
- performed the whole youtube -> gmail -> google talk -> market setup dance
- installed clockwork rom manager from the market
- followed the 1.1.0 upgrade process
- rebooted and tested everything (including the market)
- started manually loading books and apps back on, avoiding backups made before the upgrade
I don't know if this is of any help, but it worked for me. And I hope someone figures out where the problem actually is before the next B&N upgrade, because I'd rather not have to do all that again.
I did the same thing as you but I did not wipe the dalvik cache. Weird thing was that I was able to get market to work immediately after the update but it stopped working after a bit. Couldn't tell what triggered it and I was only doing hard installs from market. No backups.
I restored to factory via 1.0.1 image several times to try and isolate the problem. It was not decisive since I do have one nook that competed all updates including an overclock and all functions seem to work perfect including market.
issues and FCs with V1.1.0_r2 update
Keep in mind I am a noob at all of this and am barely able to keep up with you guys, but I had problems with FCs and general instability after using the V1.1.0_r2 update and flashing one of the more "stable" overclocked kernals. In general I didn't like the direction my NC was heading and decided to begin again.

and so far everything seems stable.
The people on these forums amaze me with their technical know-how.
Having the EXACT same problem here after doing a wipe and upgrade to auto-nootered 1.1.
After successfully downloading and installing roughly 20 apps, any new downloads now stop at the "Starting Download...." stage. Ive also tried everything short of replacing vending.apk to fix the problem -- nothing has worked. Ill be trying that next... I'll report back after.

Gtab- Stock 3358.
Previously I had Stock 3358 and rothnics enhancement pack. I installed an app from the market. As soon as I started the app the gtab screen went blank. Then the TapnTap logo as if it was rebooting then within 2 sec I was back at the home screen. If it rebooted it was a heck of a fast reboot.
then I started getting the error. Everything except stock email and settings work. But the error message pops up every few seconds. I can't go to settings and wipe. So I attempted to install stock 3358. it went fine but problem persist. Still can;t go to settings to check version or do a afactory reset.
Any and all help is appreciated.

I had same problem and after debating the right courses to take, I nvflash'ed the device and started over again.
Still would like to understand that caused that error ?
This usually occurs as the result of contacts in your contact folder with blanks in the name fields. Delete any entries with blanks and you should be good to go.
PS. You will get faster resolution if you search before posting as this has been asked and answered several times in past week.

I went into my google account, deleted or put names in contacts that didnt have names, rebooted and still having problem. I tried going into the data/data file, but there was no data file to delete as indicated on other threads. There is not an easy to find thread for this problem. Please help or at least direct me.

I never had any contacts saved. Regardless I cannot even open the contacts folder to add/delete anything.
I am having problems with, email, contacts, settings. as soon as I attempt to open any of the above it gives the FC message and takes it back to home.
On the other hand I called Gtab support. As soon as I told the probelm the lady asked me if I could go to settings. Once I told her no I cannot she said you have to send the unit back for repair. She said that she helped another individual yesterday with exact same issue.
On aside note I was able to delete most of my apps using ES file explorer.
@Bekit @rothnic or other senior members is there any solution beside nvflash. I am a newbie.

I had the same problem in February and fixed it by searching this forum and finding pieces to put together a solution. The rest of this message is what I posted back on 2/24/11. I think the important part is to repartition your SD card and clear all user data. I have had no problems since I did this fix.

I have had my GTablet since early December and have been running the Stock Enhancement since early January. I have had no problems except for a very occasional unexpected stop. It was never a real problem.
Yesterday I started getting the android.process.acore error literally anytime I tried to use any application. To my knowledge, I had not installed anything recently that would account for this.
The good news is that I followed multiple threads here and came up with what seemed to be a reasonable solution.
I installed Clockwork and reset the partition to 2048/0 as suggested by several posts. I also cleared everything that I could clear using their menu.
Then I installed NVFlash which I believe put me back to the plain vanilla factory OS. (I also think this wiped out Clockwork Mod but I'm not positive.)
I got the "update available" message and did the OTA update of the OS.
Then I installed the TnT Stock Enhancement update and applied the Market Fix.
Everything seems back to normal now.
I want to thank all of the forum members who posted the various instructions that allowed me to piece together this solution.
I realize that not everyone has the same issues when problems occur so there isn't one single fix that is right for everyone. I didn't really understand that until I had this problem. I feel lucky that I've had relatively no problems.
I have to admit that I'm looking carefully at the Motorola Xoom because I suspect it has a much more stable hardware/software infrastructure but I would rethink that if the Viewsonic folks would be more forthcoming about their plans to support upgrades for the GTab. I can live without 3G if I have stability.

Stuck SD card
I am having the same problem and tried to do the restore from the SD card and now the card is in the slot and I cant access the settings to eject it. to run the clockwork mod is there any way to force it to boot the clockwork mod?
For me, Clockworkmod "wipe data/factory reset" eliminated the pesky force close message about android.process.acore that several of us seem to have. NVflashing & Contacts data field corrections did not work for me. The problems seemed to come up after downloading an app from market.
Running VEGAn 1.00 beta 5.1.1 supplement, and happy!
got this last night/this morning as well. from other parts of the forum i went with the fix of using titanium backup to wipe data related to contacts (believe there were three separate items, contacts, contact synch, and something else). btw, I am running VEGAn 5.1.1.
after wiping the data, everything has appeared normal.

I called CS yesterday. They help me delete most of the apps that I downloaded to see if that will fix the issue. That also helped in eliminating any personal data left behind in case I have to RMA the unit.
that makes my tablet completely stock. I don't have market any more. So can't get clockwork rom manager etc. Bigger probelm is the onscreen keyboard doesn't work either gives the error message.
I did some reading on how to NV Flash the device. Still trying to understand the process.
I have two options
1. NV flash the device and hope that everything still works.
2. I bought sears insruance. Just return the device and then be done with it.
Any help is much appreciated.
My experience level is limted to flashing stock and enhancement packs using the Power and + buttons.
You don't want to use the clockwork in Rom Manager. It doesn't work for the G Tablet.
Here are a couple other options off the top of my head...

same thing with me. I downloaded a few apps and then I got it. Did the data wipe thing. Came back in and I am still getting the error. Not happening every 5 seconds, but still getting it.
okay, this is strange. I did the data wipe and I was still getting this error. After doing the market fix and got all my downloads available, I noticed that I am only getting this error when I hit the HOME button.
I hit the Home button and the error comes up, then the Android Market comes up. This only happens now when I hit the Home button. Error, Market comes up and I have to hit the Home button again to get home.
HELP!

Just wanted to say this single step worked for me as well.
Ok. Finally got rid of the problem.
First I attemted NVFlash. After some intial strugle setting up the drivers etc on windows got it to work. Everything worked but still had the exact same process.
B/w I noticed superuser still there. I thought NV Flash will bring it to out of box. Used Bekits image.
After some more reading took the plunge and did CWM internal. Dide wipe data. Rebooted and got it working again.
Again pardon my ignorance but do I have to manually update to 3358. And if I do it go stock would it get rid of CWM. How do i get it off the machine?
I would like to prepare for the OTA.
Please advise.

Glad you got it working. Installing the stock 3588 update will replace the bootloader and removes CWM. That should leave you as close to real stock as you can get.

I have a Viesonic G-Tablet, and I've flashed a couple of different ROM's on it - TNT Lite 4.4 and VEGAn-TAB 7.0 RC1.
LOOOOONG story short:
Tried to install Ubuntu, no luck.
Downloaded ZPad to try it out, installed. Didn't like it, used ClocworkMod to recover to a previous TNT Lite 4.4 install. From there, reflashed to Vegan...
And that's when the problems started. Namely, Market no longer works properly. None of my downloads are successful. It gives a "Download error - Download was unsuccessful, please try again."
So, after trying again to go back to TNT Lite and having the same trouble, I NVFlashed back to stock, wiped EVERYTHING per the directions on XDA, in the order prescribed - did everything by-the-book, and still no luck on any ROM. TNT Lite, Vegan - both of them adamantly refuse to download anything from the market.
I've searched to my wits end not only in this thread, but others as well. I've reset the data, reset the cache, uninstalled the market update - you name it, I've tried it.
Could it be your internet connection? Do other devices on your network download from the internet fine?
Thanks for the question. I guess I should have been a little more specific: Yes, great connection. I can browse the web fine, even download from Amazon's appstore - but that's where it ends. The weirdest thing is that I have noticed that I can download Firefox from the Marketplace, but literally - that's it. Nothing else, and I've tried close to 40 different apps now. All fail to download.
I've tried clearing the cache, etc...
I was even desperate enough to pretty much do a system wipe and come up clean. I used ClockworkMod to format everything - even the SDcard. Made sure to set the partition size to 2048/0, the whole nine yards. Wiped all the data, cleared/formatted cache, so I'm at a loss.
*UPDATE 4/18/11 - On a whim, I decided to use ClockworkMod to reset my User Data, and signed my tablet in under another Google account I had. As I type this, I'm downloading all the apps that I was unable to download with my "usual" account. So maybe there's a bug on Google's side? How would I even go about fixing that?
I'm having this same problem. NVFLASH and reFLASH numerous times and still no luck can someone please help. Can't install anything from market at all. it download and as soon as it finish dl and start to install it will restarted itself and nothing happen. please help. THanks

I did yet another full NVFlash last night and repartitioned the tablet, still no luck after flashing CM7. It started off allowing me to download a few dozen apps then giving me the download error, but now the first app I try gives me that.
Did anyone else here come down from TwoTapsX or another 1.2 based rom? Seems to me the issue started right about the time I NVFlashed down from that.

I just tried this myself, sure enough I can download with another Gmail account, but not my main one.
This has to be an issue with Google...I am having the same issue also.
How the hell did I quote myself up there?
Mine is downloading again, all I did was sign in as my backup account, wipe data and dalvik cache, reflash then fix permissions. When i logged in again it worked. Don't know which step actuallly fixed it.
I just deleted the data under app management and they started working again for me.

I seem to have the same problem however I do not get an error message at all, I just see the application in the notification bar preparing to download except instead of even downloading it basically just disappears. I had this problem ever since installing Vegan tab 5.1.1.

Alright guys, I'm in need of some help.
I've been flashing MIUI on my Fascinate for months now and recently I've run into a problem. On RickS' 1.12.9 I'm getting a lot of FCs. About 24-48 hours after flashing and setting up my phone I get a notification at boot that every GApp along with TB, Facebook, Script Manager have "stopped unexpectedly" and need to be force closed. My flash process is as follows:
1) ODIN either DL09 or EH03
2) ODIN CWM4
3) 3 finger boot to CWM and flash RickS 1.12.9
4) Everything is fine up to here
5) TB - Restore missing user apps (just apps, not data)
6) Set up Supercharger script (update9 RC5 test 2), Voltage Control OC/UV, Glitch kernel leakage/screen state
7) Reboot
8) Wait about a day and a couple of reboots later for the force close party to start.
Has anyone run into a similar problem? I've tried a few solutions (i.e. mixing up my flash routine, fix permissions...)

EDIT: Also, whenever I flash weblexa's builds after step 7 I get stuck in a bootloop. I'm going to try to just flash it and reboot to see if I don't get stuck (which, if I don't probably means that something I'm doing while setting up my apps and such is the cause of the problems).

It didn't happen so much with all google apps, mainly the market, but I did get it on others.
What used to work for the market, set your language in the phone settings. Not market settings, the phone. I set mine to English (United States) and I didn't get a FC on market since.
With other google apps, or other apps in general there are a couple a things you can try.
1. If you changed any permissions, i.e. disabled apps from loading on boot, turn them back on 1 at a time. When I disable Google Talk from loading.. I get FC's.
2. Try a clearing data/cache for the app and re-installing over the app... or clearing data/cache and uninstall... and re-install.
3. Have you changed your screen DPI? Below 190ish causes problems for me, like if I dial a number it FC's.
There is a couple more, I just got out of class and can't think of em for the life of me. I will post when it comes to me.

1) No permissions were changed.
2) I tried wiping davik/cache. As for the individual apps, the vast majority of the ones that are FCing are system apps; uninstalling isn't exactly an option unless I just remove them from the rom.
3) DPI hasn't been touched.

I would be willing to bet you have alot of apps installed and your datadata folder is full. There is a thread on rootzwiki on how to fix this if uninstalling or moving apps to sd is not an option for you.
So I used the ACS/Shabbypenguin root method (do a Google search, I can't post links...) and followed the directions exactly. Well almost exactly, I knew of some issues so this is what I did...
First I downloaded Superuser & Superuser Elite (I previously paid for it on a different phone).
Then I downloaded the drivers and Odin and both kernals.
I installed the drivers and put my phone into development mode.
Next, I turned off my phone then turned it back on in download mode and flashed the pre-rooted kernal as per the instructions there.
Finally, I went through the process again to flash in the stock kernal.
Now the other users had issues with USB connection and the phone not being recognised, the answer to that was on page 11 of the above linked thread (editing the vold.fstab file). I did this (using ES Root Explorer) as per the instructions and restarted.
Things seemed fine for half a day. Now my phone randomly restarts, but not always randomly. I can perform specific actions to cause it to freeze and reboot (example, simply opening the vold.fstab file does this EVERY TIME, but I was able to copy/paste it to the SD card and then open and edit it and even copy/paste it back, all using ES root explorer, and no crash/reboot unless I open it specifically and yes, that's with having the system mounted as R/W).
Another thing I noticed since rooting, and it still has maintained the rooted status, is that any time my phone restarts or I restart it, I open the system tray and this stupid "tip" toast message comes up that, prior to rooting, only came up once. Now, it comes up only once after a restart but resets every time.
I tried to sign up for the ACS forums but for some reason, I've not gotten a single registration e-mail from them and messaged half their admin with no response (the fact that the site has no cancel account and no re-send activation option troubles me enough as it is and in my opinion, should be internationally illegal).
Anyway, that's the issue, I need to resolve these random restarts, which may or may not be caused by this vold.fstab file.
Also, I connect now (before when I did the fix, it worked), the computer doesn't recognise the phone so I can't even re-flash using Odin, but the phone works (until randomly restarting which is a pain...), so I am at a loss as to what the actual cause was and since nothing I change sticks when it restarts, I have no idea what the deal is.
Some more information...
Nothing I change sticks. I have programs that I uninstalled, but they still show up in the system tray after a reboot (if I click it, it says that the program is not installed, but it still shows up).
I tried swapping back the original build.prop - didn't stick.
I tried factory data reset - didn't do anything.
I tried a restore in BusyboxPro (stericon or something is the dev) - restored but there were some "errors".
Tried temporarily unrooting (Superuser Elite) - nothing.
I read about a power button issue - my power button is fine.
There is something wrong specifically with the OS in some way that certain actions cause it to freeze and restart. I have a game, "Deathworm" that I can play with no issues or freezes. I can do a few things but:
if I get on the mobile browser, sometimes it will freeze and reboot.
if I run AppManagerPro III, sometimes it crashes when calculating the cache size (always when it gets to 70/125 or whatever the total is, but always at 70 if it DOES crash).
Now I went into task manager and went through and cleared all the app data individually app per app. Before when I tried to do this (before restoring in Busybox, before restoring the original build.prop, etc), it would crash when I went into the downloaded tab of the thing to clear the cache. This time it didn't crash on me.
Other root stuff I have installed which was working before the random rebooting issue:
Script manager (free) and V6 supercharger (also unsupercharging wouldn't stick, which I tried before restoring the build.prop manually)
SuperUserElite
App Manager Pro III
SD Maid Pro
ES File Explorer (free version I think)
BusyBox Pro
SU Update Fixer

After everything I just did, it seems to (for the moment) be working again, I am just waiting to see if it crashes again. So far I have opened and closed App Manager Pro III a few times and it calculated cache sizes with no crash. Right now, SD Maid Pro hasn't crashed yet open, hide certain tabs (clearing the data so I had to reset those options), close, reopen, scanned with system clean and app clean and actually did the app clean, so far no crashes (my phone would normally have crashed by now), cleared databases and no crash.
Also while I was in there, two programs I uninstalled via the system tray (menu button, edit, uninstall) that kept coming back were a buld.prop editor and some wonkey game (Fall down) or something, anyway those were in the downloaded section of task manager and I uninstalled them through there. Maybe that did it?
And no... still freeze, reboot and not saving any changes.
So far I've also tried uninstalling practically everything I installed and those changes aren't persisting (the uninstalled apps remain uninstalled, but reappear in the system tray or on the home screen if I had an icon there for it).
No changes I make to anything persist except things I save or copy to the SD card.
Tried factory reset again, still didn't stick.
So apparently SOME others have this issue without rooting, I can't tell, there's not a ton of reviews that I can find beyond "F*** STRAIGHT TALK CUSTOMER SERVICE THIS PHONE IS CRAP".
I hate to keep bumping this, but every time I have an issue, I am highly detailed in things and I NEVER EVER have EVER gotten a response EVER on this site, EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
I really really really don't want to waste another ~$200 for nothing.
I would appreciate even a response of "yeah I have this problem too".
I don't want this to die like all the other threads I started...
Does anyone even have a clue as to where I can begin attempting to troubleshoot this on my own then?
What tools should I look into or what logs in what folders?
I know this post is very outdated but there may still be someone tinkering with these older phones still as I am.
Over the past few days I have been trying to get this Straight Talk Samsung Galaxy Proclaim rooted and working just for something to do.
I'm not one to ask for help to often so I end up doing a lot of reading and a lot of trial / error.
In my reading I have seen quite a few posts / comments around the net stating not to use the Shabbypenguin root method
as it is very buggy and unstable.... I can not tell you from experience so please do not quote me. I ended up using the TeamProlusion
root method and all has went very well other than a few minor problems I need to work out.
In all honesty I'm not real sure what I may post or may not.... ( Yes I need to REread the rules for sure ) but I

As the title says, maybe this is why you're most likely here.
I have recently experienced this issue while using versions of android with ART (Android Runtime) for almost 3 years. I have a OnePlus 2 that I've purchased in September of 2015 and am now just experiencing this issue although after I've done some searching on google, apparently this has been happening ever since the release of ART.
The phone will eventually boot but I've only witnessed it taking up to an hour. Others around the net have reported up to 12 hours. It seems this can depend on the amount of apps in your phone since they're being optimized.
I've restored an older backup since at first I didn't know what the issue was but after 2 reboots the same issue happened again. This is when it took an hour to boot and I noticed most of my apps were gone although they were all there after the first boot. I'm now restoring my most recent backup which I made in recovery right after this issue first happened and am hoping it will eventually boot with all of my apps/data.
Edit 1: It has successfully booted with all of its data although it took 60 minutes. I rebooted again and now it says, 'Optimizing app 1 of 1' but it seems it will take a long time again.
Edit 2: It has taken exactly 60 minutes to simply reboot without any changes. All apps/data are still present with 18% battery discharge.
People have said this can happen while booting with the charger plugged in but I've tested both scenarios with the same result. Does anyone know what causes this issue? My mom has the same phone and it's not rooted and never had any modifications to the OS but it has also done the same thing without data loss not too long ago.

I've found a fix although it takes a little time.
Using Titanium backup
Backup all user apps
Uninstall user apps
Reboot to recovery
Wipe dalvik-cache
Reboot
Restore user apps
I do not know how to properly debug so I used this method. When TitaniumBackup has trouble restoring an app or apps then that .apk(s) are/is the issue. I found out mine was ZEDGE because it was having trouble restoring. After it somehow installed I rebooted and the 'Optimizing app 1 of 1' screen appeared so I rebooted into recovery to delete ZEDGE from /data/app/. It rebooted in less than 2 minutes without ZEDGE.
I also noticed while trying to reinstall it through the Play Store it wouldn't load the downloading animation correctly unless I backed out of the app page then returned to it. If this happens to you then you can try uninstalling all updates for Google Play Store and see what happens. I tried this and eventually received error code 924.
The error is happening during the install process. ZEDGE was previously installed on my device without this issue until it was updated on 4/16/'18.
Not sure how the updated version caused this issue. After it was updated everything was normal until I tried rebooting with it. It seems this issue can happen on anyone's device using ART during the install process for any of your user apps. If anyone has had this happen do you know what causes this error?
