If root is established... what about Wireless Tether? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In the (likely) event that the Thunderbolt is rooted, will 4G data be able to be transmitted through the Wireless Tether app on the market, or is that app limited to 3G? I don't know how it works with the Evo and Wi-Max, but I assume it'll be the same for the Thunderbolt, no? 4G hotspot sounds awesome to me...
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk

4g gets utilized on the epic 4g on sprnt with wireless tether
But it has to hve wimax enabled before you open the app, it doesn't make the transistion from 3g to 4g on its own even if you turn 4g on afterwards so I'm guessing itsgonna work the same
Also, I haven't used wireless tether because of sprints hotspot app (they say it requires $30 but it works great for me ) but that's what I unerstand about it.

Good insight. Thanks for the information!

If its like the Incredible and EVO, EPST access should work to make tethering free with the official app that comes pre-loaded on the ThunderBolt. Which I assume works with Hotspot switching from 3G to 4G and vice versa when its in range without having do anything special.
rumor has it that the LTE handoff issue that was found to cause the delay of the phone as tweeted by black_man_x, was possibly having to do with the Hotspot app not handing off data control to 3G when 4G was not available and vice versa for Wifi.

That... would be sweet. Usually built-in apps for tethering/hotspot are among the best. Well, in the case of the Droid X, that was true until Wireless Tether supported infrastructure mode... now that's a lot better, too.
Sounds good to me... waiting for the phone to come out is the hardest part for many of us now.

If you attempt to use the built in app, and they charge extra for that, do you get any kind of warning beforehand? Or do you just get a surprise on your bill?

Sprint does not charge for the use of wireless tether but if you use their hotspot they do charge. I don't know if they have the ability to figure out whether you're using tether or they don't care. Now with Verizon LTE who knows?

Kinda offtopic but what happened to the most where you can simply delete part of the email address identifier that vzw sees? To use the stoxk tether Does this no longer work?
PS. I forget where those 2 ids are so I'd someone can chime in to refresh my memory that be great

You will get a warning if you are not subscribed to a tethering plan. When you tether with the built in app (unmodded) the first webpage you will see from your pc is a VZW page to subscribe to mobile hotspot tethering plan. At this point you simply stop and no charges. From my own experiences.

On a somewhat related note, we have some time to figure that out. As a promotion, vzw is allowing free use of the hotspot app on the tb until may 11th!

They told me that the mobile hotspot feature is free for now. I tested it out and it is. Not sure if this is just for new customers or not.

I just finished rooting my TB about an hour ago and finally got the wireless tether app to work. I'm currently running off of it while typing this post on my laptop and it appears to be using the 4G without any issue. It's pretty quick if you have bars showing. I also installed the setcpu and changed the setting to performance. Gotta love this device. Next thing I want to do is hook up my Xbox to my TB while using the wireless tether app and see how well it performs. Cheers!

when I got my phone they included tethering for free, and my xoom can see the tether, how smart are they?
I am a long time verizon cust and I have been through many android phones with them, this is a promo if you buy the phone before may 15th or something, they told me it will continue to be free but anyone who buys it after may will have to pay for tethering. Always ask for promos anytime you are in the store, sometimes they can just apply it without buying hardware, if they like you.

It's a promo that will last until April or May 15th. I forget. After that, I believe it's an additional 20 dollar charge with a 2GB cap. When you get the tethering app working after rooting your TB, then you don't have to worry about using the hotspot anymore. You can use your tethering app without any cap.

Are you talking about the M.IP setting that has [email protected] and @dun.vzw3g.com? If so try ##778 send enter 6 0s (000000) and go through the settings till you find username and take the dun. Out and save it. If it is the same as all the other HTC phones that is. It might be a different username because of 4g but the concept is the same, make the dun password the same as the regular one.

My rezound drops 3g at random moments.?

Hey folks,
I have been checking all over the web, and have not found enough useful info. My 3g signal drops out at random times when I know I have a good signal. I have put it in only cdma mode. Done all the other stuff, and it still does this. I live in a no 4G area, and never had problems like this with my incredible. I am afraid it is my phone, but I think it is the network. I haven't rooted yet because of this. Has anybody else had this problem? All responses are welcome. Thanks

Some people are saying that since our connection is verified with the sim card that it is a network problem caused by issues Verizon is having. Watch the web when people state they have 4G issues and you are probably going to see 3G outages at the same time.

This may help you. Whenever there is an outage this lets me get 3g at least

I'm having the same issue...3G only area though being restricted to 1x where I should deff have 3G...
I should add that evdo is extremely slow at changing from 3g to 4g but if you're not in 4g coverage I had more reliable 3g using evdo.

Ugh, I'm battling with this issue as well. Rebooting doesn't get my 3g back. Is this a software issue? I'm rooted with a custom kernel/rom, but I had this issue stock.

This. I read in our forums that because LTE phones use a SIM card, they have to go through a type of verification process with the network to latch onto LTE signal. As a result, when this is happening the 3G signal bottoms out because the phone is trying to latch onto LTE. The same is true for going from LTE to EVDO as well.
Something along those lines, at least

Have you tried replacing the SIM? If at all possible try walking out of Verizon without them activating the new SIM. Seems when ever I'm at a Verizon store someone is always waiting to have a 4G device activated. I had one instance with a SIM swap that took 30 mins @ the store. Now I just ask for a SIM replacement and tell them that I would activate via phone support when I get home. In my past experience, activation happen a lot faster away from a Verizon store loaded with queued activation requests.

I've had this issue since the Vigor came out. In 3g, I'd lose data completely. Only a reboot or airplane mode would fix it. I had new Vigor sent to me and the same problem. I've been through several sim cards ( I switch between my Vigor and Nexus often). I've talked to VZW more times than I care to mention and they've had no answers for me. They even sent techs to my area to see if it was a network problem. No luck. Just have to live with it I guess. My nexus doesn't do it. Still prefer the Vigor though.

I had the same problem...3G dropping randomly thoughout last weekend. I thought it was my Rezound so I activated my Droid Razr. Same thing. I'm in Southern Oregon. I called the local Verizon corporate store and asked if there were 3G problems and they didn't know. I think they really are a bit brain dead anyway. I can say I've two of their top line phones phones and both losing 3G once or twice an hour was really pissing me off. I NEED data, I was ready to cancel my service (unlimited data) and go with Sprint but thought better of it as I'm getting 3G constant now. Maybe Verizon has worked this out, I sure hope so.
I run juicedefender, which kills data when screen is off. I wonder if this has to do with it? Doesn't happen often, 3g will come on without a reboot after a few minutes.

I really do not think Juicedefender is the problem. I have BatteryCalibration (need to be rooted) and never had a problem. I haven't read anything about Juicedefender being the issue. I think it's Verizon, in fact with 2 phones having the same dropping in and out of 3g I sure of it.
Also a few minutes is not even close to acceptable to wait for data. I need data constantly, if your using Google Nav and you lose data your toast, streaming music your toast and I can think of a ton other reasons 3g should never be lost.
Most of Sunday and today I have not had an issue...makes you wonder.
I was using juice defender. I was also having problems with dropping 3 and 4g. Try not running it. Since I stopped I haven't had any drops.

From my understanding, it connects thru evdo. The Resound tries to connect thru 4g first, struggles, forcing 3g off, and in the process drops data. I take no credit for this. Pwned posted the link I think. You would get a better understanding if you read the link on page one. Hope that helps......

Sprint now charging for domestic roaming?

Warning to all Sprint users!
I was using my motorola Photon while roaming on CDMA domestically, which I have done before, when all of a sudden a popup appeared. This wasn't the normal, "beware of possible data charges, continue?" This popup said something like: "You are roaming domestically off of Sprint's wireless network, to continue you must agree to pay the roaming charges"
You are given the choice to agree or cancel and not be able to use data. I have gotten out of it by pressing the home button but it keeps coming back while I'm roaming.
Did sprint change their policy? If so let me know so I can cancel for free, this isn't going to fly.
Hello,
With the Simply Everything Plan, Domestic Roaming is free. The Warning is just a boilerplate warning as not everyone is on the Plan and the Photon does not know which Plan you are on. If on the Simply Everything Plan, just turn off the Warning.
Cheers,
JJ
As an ex-Sprint employee I know this, but this popup was different than the one I normally receive on the Photon and specifically said Sprint. It also said I WILL be charged.
So instead of assuming, did you call sprint to verify?
Sent from my MoPho using XDA Premium.
I have called about this before and was told I can use up to 300mb of data while roaming, anything after that I would get charged.
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk
I was told the same thing when I signed up for Sprint Service earlier today... I spend a day or so in a fringe area that roams 3G on Verizon, and was told if I go over 300 MB data, or half of my voice minutes on another domestic network, that I could get charged, or booted off.

As a current Sprint employee, I can say roaming is free for both voice and data. Every smartphone I carry at my location has that "generic" warning message. I've been answering that question for over 4 years now. One thing to note though, Sprint does has excessive usage where they can terminate your contract at will. I believe there was bond XDAer who accumulated something like 93GB in a 3 month time period and politely asked to leave Sprint. If you have further questions, call 1-877-775-4886 instead of *2 or 1-800-SPRINT1.

300mb or a majority of data use. If you use 2gb in a month and you roam at or under 1gb for said month then you will not be charged. This us covered in the TOS and can be found verbatim on their website.
Just saying.

Some people just dont really read anymore, nor have common sense, I mean really, you think any carrier would happily let you roam constantly??? If your phone gets a bad signal, call them and (politely) talk to them and see what they can do, if that doesn't solve the issue, go for an airvana, doesn't cost you a dime, if your still not happy, cancel your contract, sprint didn't force you to sign the dotted line, you made that decision....done with my rant for the night
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
Yes but sense we are all used to roaming constantly, due to Sprint's limited network, and it has always been free. And as you see from a current employee above; we are still being told it is free, it is just ridiculous.
Anyway, not here to ***** about Sprint, just warning those who torrent all the time.

Once again, the spreading of more mis-information...
Since no one takes the time to read the Data roaming agreement portion of your subscriber agreement I'll quote it for you all so that you may all 'know it all' ... In case anyone cares to read it, you can find the entire agreement here
Off-network Roaming: The primary use of your Device must be for domestic purposes within the Sprint-owned network. Domestic means use in the 50 United States and U.S. Territories (except Guam). Sprint reserves the right, without notice, to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if off-network usage in a month exceeds: (1) voice: 800 min. or a majority of minutes; or (2) data: 300 megabytes or a majority of kilobytes...

So, if you use a total of 2gigs in a month and you use 1gig or less while roaming, they won't care because you are still under the 'majority of kilobytes' clause.. therefore, no charges, no pissy letters, no phone call... nada.
In fact, I'll post up a screenshot where my wife and I consumed roaming data like you wouldn't believe and they didn't care.
On a side note.. if anyone uses their cellular data connection for downloading torrents they are an idiot... my data consumption was streaming internet radio while force roaming just to test the 'majority of kilobytes' theory.. they didn't give a ****...
proof is in the pic... now can we please stop beating this horse ?

That's EXACTLY why that Guy with 93Gb in a month got the boot!! For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone would use a phone to download torrents, just can't. And if you READ the contract, (I did down to the fine print), unlimited data has limitations. Torrents were not specifically mentioned, but using Photon as a Server is, and I assume this falls under that.

I know its cumbersome, but until we have roms with custom toggles in the notification bar pulldown, go to settings > wireless and networks > mobile networks > uncheck data enabled.
I don't have a note, but this has been the same on both my infuse and captivate. Should be the same or similar for the note. Yeah its cumbersome, but it works.
Also, if you stay connected to the same wifi, it shouldn't use data anyways, but I suppose this way makes sure.

No problem. And I'm not exactly sure, but there may be some code that you can dial to force 3g data only. I know for my infuse there are codes to force edge, but I have no clue about lte. Anybody with any knowledge of this should definitely chime in, because once I get my note ill definitely be interested in turning of lte as well.

If you arent in an LTE supported area you have no worries. ATTs network isnt like verizons where the phone will constantly be looking for LTE. If you are in an LTE area and just dont want to use it you will have to alter APN settings to one that only uses H+. You should be able to use the same settings from an H+ only phone.
Just go in settings, wireless network, mobile network, network mode... And you should see this

As expected, stock at&t ROM doesn't have that simple option to choose which of those 3 data options you want. I'm not surprised considering stock Skyrocket also doesn't give you this option.

Verizon doesn't search for LTE constantly if you aren't in an LTE area.

2.13 WIFI still slow vs. GS3 (6mbps vs. 13mbps)

I had read that the WIFI issues were fixed with the latest OTA.
I am now getting 1000kbps up to 6000kbps on the Evo with "Best WIFI performance" selected, and the GS3 sitting right next to it gets 13,000kbps. My laptop also gets around 13,000kbps. I have gotten faster speeds on the Evo, but it is very inconsistent.
Also, web pages are still frequently reloading, where I had read that that issue had been solved too.
Hmmm. Anyone else?
After flashing the deodexed, rooted ROM including the latest OTA, I surpassed 50 MB for the first time ever, about 5-10 MB more than before the OTA, FYI

Michael, great speed. But is it consistent? I get 13 MB, then less than 1 MB, then 6 MB...
Meanwhile the other equipment on the same wireless router all have very consistent speeds, and much faster.
I hope this gets worked out because I LOVE the screen on this thing.
Also, do your web pages reload when you revisit them?
I'm not very familiar with speed tests, but could it be limited to the write speed of wherever it is being to? SD card?

It is very consistent. The first test seems to "prime" the wireless connection, and I only get 20-30 MB down and 5 MB up. However, after setting wireless to operate at 5 Ghz,, after the priming, I get 45-50 MB down and 7.5-10 MB up consistently. I have a Cisco wireless router that operates at 2 bands, so you might need to hard code the LTEVO wireless setting to 2.5 GHz, depending on the bands your router operates at. Try that!

Also, I don't have reloading issues on webpages, although very rarely I have to recycle the WiFi, with pages not loading. That is like 1-5% of the time.

Cloaker, we are using the speedtest.net app to test wifi speeds only - unrelated to the memory cards.
Michael - the 2.4 settings seems to have helped a bit. It might be more consistent now, but it's still only about 2/3 as fast as the GS3...
Also, do your web pages reload when you revisit them?
I have my router set to Wireless N only and I getting 35Mb down and 8-10Mb up on the regular.

So, when you have to recycle, is the wifi completely off?
Also, re: the browser: are you saying that if you have several tabs open in the browser, and you swap from one to the other, there is no couple second delay while it reloads?? Mine reloads the pages every time. Facebook, for example, will reload and leave me with whatever new entries have shown up. (the SG3 does not do this, the older entries are still there at the top until I refresh it manually.)

I've got a question. I have FiOS quantum speeds with speeds that are supposed to be 75 down and 35 up. I get around 20/20 with the speed test app. Is this post saying I'm not getting that high of speeds because of this phone? Verizon told me "We don't guarantee WiFi speeds". Is there something I can do to jack up my speeds? The router is Verizon supplied. Thanks.

xbmoyx, test it with a laptop and see if there is a difference.
That's weird,my 50mb p/s wifi connection tops out at 38mbps on my phone if I'm not mistaken

In my experience, I've always been limited to about 20 down, haven't had the chance to test a decent up speed. This has been true for every smartphone I've had.

My laptop was relatively the same as the phone. So there's nothing wrong with the phone but is there anything I can do to improve my WiFi?

Huh, how many devices have you tried? I would try at least two computers, if it stays that low, I would try turning off/unplugging your modern for a couple minutes, retesting, if that doesn't work, I'd call my ISP. That's pretty low actual speed, especially if you're paying for 75/35

Yeah. I've called Verizon and they made me reset my modem and it didn't fix the WiFi then they told me they don't guarantee WiFi speeds. I only have this phone and my laptop so I can't test another computer. I only get speeds that fast if I plug in my Ethernet cord to the laptop.

Well obviously a cell phone carrier isn't going to guarantee another company's speeds. Call the ISP who supplies your 75/35.
Edit: I just realized you said you get the proper speeds with a wired connection, do you know if your modern/router, whatever is broadcasting, is using Wireless N? Or is it using B/G?

The ISP is Verizon, I have FiOS. I'm looking at the back of the router right now and don't know what I'm looking at lol. They installed it. The picture is the back of it and nothing is on the front. (Please forgive the dust bunnies)

Since launch day I have been able to max out my wifi on 2.4ghz at around 22 down. On both a broadcom chipset router and an atheros chipset router. Never had the WiFi issue I hear people talk about. I never turned on the best performance thing as I hear it burns the battery like no tomorrow and never touched the band settings either.

I believe i am being throttled

Hey people I understand sprints network is unlimited etc.... but me and the other person on my line are rooted and we tether he used probably near 15-20gb i used probably about 5 and ever since the 30th of december my 4g connection has been unreliable to the point where i have to turn on 3g to use the internet or it will just hang at loading the website or the app i even did a speedtest with other people that have sprint in my area they easily get over 10mbps while i cant even get 1mbps unless i throw 3g on..... my question is can i do anything about this? we both have sprint note 3s stock rooted i checked the towers in my area all are good! I called sprint they made me do a network reset etc update profile and prl nothing changed! please help
Could be defective but I don't think you're being throttled. Try taking the battery out for a few minutes.

My wife and I are with Sprint as well and we both strongly believe that Sprint throttles 4g LTE at 5 gb download. Every month when I hit 5 gb I can't connect to 4g until the next billing cycle. We are going to see how Spark is this year and if it's as piss poor as the current 4g we are jumping over to AT&T.

Sprint has to be throttling I know my device is not defective it just so happens it's happening to both lines on my account we both used a decent amount of data I wonder if there is some sort of work around

Agreed. If you aren't in a roaming area, they shouldn't be throttling you. Make sure that you update your PRL and profile, reboot, then call them. There are a lot of factors, including times of day, towers from which you're pulling, &c. They know this info, so I suggest that have your facts before calling.

No throttling. 5gb isn't anything. I've used close to 100gb with no problems. For years I've easily gone over that 5gb mark. Someone here in another thread used almost 200gb. Just sounds like tower overload. New customers around Christmas time makes sense. Sprint should be able to see that.
Edit: For anyone that wants to see the unthrottled usage lol http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2592679&page=4
I'm having a similar issue. Will have to keep a close eye on it. I thought it was just my phone or the towers acting funny

Ya if data is not fast enough to stream some video in an area with lte coverage I would call and see whats up. Or go take your phone to another of the same model and compare signal strength. You can go into testing settings and make sure both are on same tower and see actual signal dBm.

Yes that is sprint lte at its best I love this phone/service. I cant see me needing spark untill phones have 4k displays and 4k video out. Maybe for really congested/populated cities its needed. wimax never made it here and lte is pretty new for us too, spark is probably years away for me anyways.
