News article: 2/21/11 - HTC Snags OnLive for Tablet Video Games - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

Ever heard of a Tablet Gamer? You probably will in the second quarter of this year. HTC has now stepped up to the plate of the tablet industry with its newly unveiled HTC Flyer.
According to ZDNet, the Flyer was revealed at the Mobile World Congress on the 15th of February, boasting a 7-inch screen, 32GB storage, a camera on both the front and the back, and, of course, Wi-Fi capability.....
Read more at - http://onlivefans.com/news/htc-snags-onlive-for-tablet-video-games/168/

It requires at least 3 Mbits per second broadband to play the games, which is currently impossible in my country.
Hd2 desire s build xda app.

I'm currently thinking of getting a flyer and having something like this could be really cool. But I wonder if the 1.5 ghz single-core will be able to handle the job. Or will it be fine given the service is streaming ?

Today I've checked htc website, they removed every thing about OnLive, you cannot find anything about it any more, even there is nothing on manual. I guess its gone. So sad
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App

OnLive does not appear to be present on the Flyer. There is no app, no mention in the manual, nothing.

I think it will come back. They didn't make an investment for nothing. Hopefully they are working on optimizing it. But it looked fine back in MWC, and the service works well using the OnLive Gaming Console and on my Macbook Air.
But I hate the fact they won't mention it at all in the marketing or through their Twitter account.

HTC 10" Tablet coming this June !

Hi Everyone,
I am excited as many of you are about the stylus/scribe feature that the HTC Flyer is coming out with, supposingly this month....according to Clove.co.uk.
According to seveal sites, mostly using the same info, HTC is releasing a 8.9 and 10 inch tablet, coming out this June 2011.
http://www.dkszone.net/htc-10-inch-touchpad-release-june
http://blog.gsmarena.com/an-unannou...-inch-samsung-tablet-come-alive-in-rumorland/
Apparently, they will have some updatetd hardware along with hopefully the stylus/scribe feature.....I am sure, since this is key to their tablet marketing strategy.
Although I like the idea of a 7" screen for portability, I won't shy away from a larger one, especially if it has some better hardware. i.e. ports, cpu, memory etc..
I really hope this is true!!
The flyer looks amazing but it could be so much more with bigger screen and such
I've also read somewhere that the other tablets will come with nvidia tegra
I hope they come out soon, I was going to get flyer, but these sound something to wait for
Is the pen input pretty precise on these models?
From what I've heard its really good

Should edit the title: it's not 8.9", its 10" only.
The 8.9" is a Samsung.
Dual core finally!
10 inch is still fine with me !!
And yes the almighty dual core, nor just to ponder if they choose the same 1.2 in eve 3d/sensation, or they don't underclock it and leave it at 1.5 or NVIDIA tegra 2 either way it'll be beast

And also, 3d features anyone?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
they definitely rushed th flyer out!
True, but in comparison most of the other tablets so far only have stock versions of Android at last we have a dam good version of sense

Judging by the price of the 7' flyer, steve jobs and bill gates will be the only people able to afford it
If ur in the US don't complain its hfslf the price it is in Europe
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
yea $500 does not seem terrible, and honestly sense will make this thing a beauty to use. I plan on trying this thing out for work, and hopefully getting the company to at least entertain the idea of using the note taking ability. I would like to see HTC offer the ability to turn off sense like you used to be able to do in winmo 6.1, would be nice to have the option for stock honeycomb when it happens. Also let's not forget this is an HTC device, i'm sure this thing will be rootable/hackable to no end!
And for the record, i hope they just stop with the whole 3d bs, hope that tech never catches on
Ye, I plan on using mine for school, taking notes in my classes, should be perfect, its well worth it for me,
P.s. is there any information available on where HTC watch will be available? Cos itunes and others don't sell or rent movies in Norway was wondering if HTC have the rights to do so, seeing as is advertised on website like all other countries :/

Just updated the title, thanks.
I am more happy anyway with a 10" anyway.
I certainly hope HTC keeps the stylus feature in this larger tablet. That would be perfect for my requirements.
Well.....June is just around the corner.......looks like summer is going to be a great Android Tablet month.
Here's something from The Tech Journal, May 6th 2011........it has a picture of the 10" tablet. Real or not ???
http://thetechjournal.com/electronics/tablet/htc-android-tablet.xhtml
HTC need to release more 5-9 inches tablets, 10 is too much for mobile use..
I thought I read somewhere that Pegatron is also one of the iPad 2 manufacturers along with Foxconn... Not good news if HTC is going with them. Just look at all the supply problem Asus is having with its Transformer.
I heard that price will be ~799+$
Official announcement will come out once the Flyer is released. I can't wait for this, but I have a feeling it won't be out in June. Maybe later imo.
I want a 10"

I highly doubt HTC will push out an nvidia chip - mostly they have an agreement with Qualcomm for a start if I am not mistaken.
That's why when everyone was announcing dual core phones they pushed out a single core Desire S/Incredible S...
Then they fly in with the HTC Sensation with dual core to rival the Galaxy S II.
I have a Xoom at home Wifi 10" is great for home use - 7" seems a good size for out and about (aside from a phone) - so I'd be interested to see what the 10" are like to get a second tablet at home...

HTC Flyer & Onlive?

I picked up my HTC Flyer this evening at Best Buy. General feel and speed of the device is very quick. I did not get the pen yet. They did not have any of those in stock at the particular store I was at.
My question however deals with the Onlive service. I was under the impression that the Flyer would come with Onlive built in to the system... However, I cannot find it or find any additional detail on the service. This was supposed to be one of the key selling points I thought.
Anyone have any details?
I have no details. Reviewers mentioned it was coming soon. I assume it has simply been delayed. But, it does bother me HTC has said nothing about it, and removed mentions of it from all their marketing and promotional videos.
Bump
Rather than start a new thread, maybe this will be useful! Engadget has a video demoing OnLive on our lovely Flyer's with a wireless controller!
Check here!
I wondering is this was a lovely bit of marketing spin.
In that 'eventually' you will be able to use Onlive (once Onlive is ready), but the way it was marketing suggested to you (and the rest of us) that it would be from launch.
I suspect if we looked, we'd be hard pushed to see anything from either party (HTC or Onlive) that actually says from launch.
Similarilly I'd thought I'd seen in some of the media/PR around MWC that with the Flyer you'd be able to use Skype supporting video. Now again that doesn't seem to be the case, as Microsoft don't yet have a freely available version of SkyPe available that supports video under Android.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy my Flyer but I feel with a handful of apps and services not available like they claimed, it is extremely disappointing. This tablet feels really rushed and it is strange because they were one of the last companies to market a tablet device. My impression originally is that Honeycomb would be released for it shortly after it was released but I keep reading it won't be released for potentially 3-5 months from now. I can't complain about Honeycomb too much because I knew that way before purchasing it but still...
In my opinion I don't think honey will take that long bc the 10" version is going to have honey on it with the scrib also. Im prety sure that i herd and saw on some reviews from HTC view that it will be getting honey shortly after launch which is June 24, so I'm thinking once the 10" comes out or right around that time the ota will be sent out. The 10" is supposed to hit this summer july. I have a friend with HTC and he also said when I asked him before flyer hit the shelf, "its coming soon after flyer's launch, along with onlive probably coming with the update."

[Q] HTC Flyer vs Ipad2

Hi All, I know I am about to get alot of attacks but please try give me a honest answer.
I currently own a Galaxy tab ans although it is a great device, I am a little disappointed with the updates on it. So, I am in the market for a new tablet.
The flyer looks like a fantastic option but looking at the forums, sounds like there is not much activity on development side. If I am wrong please correct me...
I love android, but it seems that the devices reach the sale by date too soon...
Thanks
Prices just dropped so I would imagine many will migrate....
But bigger issue is size and pen so I would never consider iPad.

I'll be honest. I've had the Flyer since when they first came out, and I've yet to see a single OTA update.
So... how many developers are doing work on the projects here, anyone going to work on ifs?

I've also had the Flyer since day 1, which in Netherlands was 17 May, and have meanwhile had three or four O/S updates.
The last update is not counted as I am now running on the beta Honeycomb rom (FlyHoney 0.02 version).
I Have Both...
Ipad2 and Flyer P512 just upgraded to FLYHONEY... with that being said, my uses leads me to the flyer. I utililize the pen and with the ipad2 cap pen it wasn't good enought for me.
I've played with the iPad. My Flyer suites me more. I like the portability, & customization of Android. Haven't changed ROMs, because I've been waiting for ICS. I have had about 3 OTA updates since getting it in September. The stylus helps for note taking in meetings h lectures. I have no use for my laptop since getting the Flyer. I'm bias towards Android, but iOS is very easy to use. It boils down to your own preference. But I know the 2nd gen of Samsung Galaxy Tabs are much better than the current crop, so if you're willing to wait take your time before buying.
I have both and I think I like the Ipad a tad bit better. That's mainly because I am heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem with 4 apple tvs, 4 macs, and 2 ipads. I like the fact that the ipad is more universally supported and you can literally get a app for everything. There are some anatomy apps on the ipad that I used last semester that really helped me with my grades. One of the killer apps for the ipad is airplay. When I have company over, I can easily pull something up on the ipad and show it on any of our HDTVs. I can't let go of the flyer though because I use it to take all my math notes and lecture notes at school. If I was away from home more often, I could see myself using the flyer much more especially since it has awesome battery life. I like it because it is pocketable and I can easily make a grocery list and just throw it in my pocket with the stylus. I once tried putting my ipad in my pocket and my wife thought I was really happy to see her =)
I have Flyer since first launch in my country (june 2011), there are only two (2) security update via OTA...I really want to have ICS on Flyer ....
Ipad2 is a very good device (I have both Ipad and Ipad2)... easy to use, always updated OS and I have purchased many apps and they are very useful... too bad that Ipad2 doesnt have Magic Pen otherwise I would sell my Flyer
Cheers
PS. my Flyer need to be charged every night so power hungry while the performance is not really special
I tried the iPad 2 against my Flyer, and I just couldn't justify the additional $400 for the iPad 2 (not a fair comparison - really more like $300 - I had a 64gb WiFi, and my Flyer specs would be a 32gb iPad). Still, you can (or at least could - looks like it is unavailable right now) buy TWO Flyers to ONE iPad. With Magic Pens down to $39, that just made the Flyer a no brainer (although I am no longer one of the cool kids at the office anymore).

It doesnt happen here in my country...
Flyer price when I bought it was very expensive Rp7,000,000 (USD777) while Ipad 2 was and is Rp8,000,000 (USD888), but Ipad 2 has 64GB and dual core cortex A9

That definitely turns the economics upside down, and then the non-iPad manufacturer faces teh problem I have seen REPEATEDLY in Best Buy where a customer asks the same questio over and over again: "Why should I buy a Xoom/Samsung/RIM/Asus/whatever when I can get a 'REAL iPAD' for the same price or less?" Kind of leads credence to the line fo thinking that there is no "tablet" market, only an "iPad" market.
Much happier with my custom Flyer running LeeDroid 2.1. Did not like lugging around the iPad2. Gave it to my wife.
To say I can't live without my MacBook Pro, I hate everything else Apple has out. Advantage Flyer.

Long term users, what is your verdict after months of use? Hit or Miss?

Five months on from buying this machine, I am still majorly impressed and excited by it. I don't think there is a better 7 inch device out there for user experience. I have spent hours checking out other tablets - particularly Samsung 7.7, 7 plus (owned), Sony S (own) and IPad and I always come back to this beast.
Was hesitant to switch to Honeycomb, but now, no regrets. Minimal / no freezes, great display, very user friendly keyboard and editing, unrivalled animation, fast, top design (consider the placement of volume to power buttons on this, compared to samsung's awkward button positioning) and great sound. Forgot to mention, the price is now irresistible. The only issue is the damn battery.
For me, the Flyer is a hit, big time. Interested to know what other long term users think...

I absolutely loooooove my flyer . I got the best buy wifi version when it first came out. And even though i may have over-payed for it i still love it. Really the n-trig feature is what set this apart from all of the other tablets. Without this feature i really couldn't justify this purchase to my wife (she figured it was just another gadget that i wanted). Then after i got it my wife fell in love with the functionality of it and got one herself. Then after that i had at least ten to fifteen coworkers and friends who purchased the flyer/view (even converted some from the dreaded Ipad). However, only one of them actually makes use of XDA and i highly doubt any of them makes use of or cherishes their tablet as much as i do). I know there are those that don't prefer honeycomb but when I switched to it (many thanks to Globatron) to me it opened up even that much more functionality of the tablet (I don't really play games on it). i I also like the current development that has been going on (really looking forward to ICS). Even though I continue to research the upcoming tablets (after all I am still a gadget guy) i don't see myself replacing my flyer any time soon. The only thing I may be interested in is the Galaxy Note due to it being a phone and only as a supplement to my flyer not as a replacement (i really don't want anything over the seven inch form factor). So to summarize as far as i am concern and for my purposes NOTHING BEATS THE FLYER.
If you can buy something like this and still love it five months on then it really says something, prices are going down so quick and devices getting faster/smaller.
Personally I bought mine when the UK price went down to £230, half-price, and I still love it, would be great if it were thinner & therefore lighter - I'll keep it for the next 18 months and then swap out. In this world today keeping such a gadget for about 2 years is a major success.
Versus an ipad2, ignoring cost, do I still think the Flyer is the better choice? The Flyer wins because of the pen - for me both devices are great for movies and games, but when it comes to making quick sketches in meetings Flyer wins hands-down, those "capacitive pens" I see people using with the ipad are a complete joke.
I am happy with my flyer, but maybe not so much with htc. 6 months into having the device I still enjoy it and have avoided any other device purchases since. htc and their failure to market/support the device would probably prevent me from ever buying one of their devices again. If I had paid full price for my flyer I probably would be pissed.
Flyer
I guess I didn't pay full price either, that's probably why I think this is such a great bargain for all that it does. I cannot believe I forgot to mention how good the pen was! I have the Galaxy Note too. However, for annotation and document highlighting, I only use the flyer. I agree though, that HTC could pull their finger out in terms of support for what is still a relatively new device.
Sent from my HTC Flyer P512 using xda premium
I just bought a Transformer TF300, so that means I'll probably be using my Flyer a bit less when I'm at home. But the Flyer goes with me everywhere, so she'll still see lots of love (at work, for instance).
At any rate, after 9 months of ownership I still think it's a fabulous device, and am still very impressed with the build quality. No regrets and no immediate plans to upgrade to a newer, faster 7" tablet. Yeah, the day will come, but I'm on no hurry.
i've had it since january, and i still love it. use it almost daily, get great battery life out of it, and i love using the pen to take notes instead of misplacing a bunch of little sticky notes!
A few months ago I sold a 7" 64GB Playbook (for a profit) and bought a used 32GB 3G Flyer.
My personal experience is that the Playbook is very good for watching movies. Linking the Playbook to an TV with an HDMI port was also straight forward (just plug it in) so a great media device.
However, I needed a device that had 3G and turn by turn navigation. The Playbook did not provide either of these so I bought the Flyer.
I then found out the the GPS signal on the Flyer looses lock and it cannot find my bluetooth GPS module. Therefore, it does not fulfill one of my principle requirement. Also getting the Flyer to display a movie on a TV is a real pain compared to the Playbook. So for displaying to a TV, the Playbook is better.
The pen on the Flyer is a huge hit with my young daughter. It will keep her happy for hours on a long trip.
So my conclusion
I like the Flyer, it is well made, has a good screen and a good size. Overall I prefer it to the Playbook.
But it is not perfect.
Had mine for about 8 months now or so. Generally very happy with it.
Certainly 7" is the size for me. 10" is a housebound form factor as far as I'm concerned, watching people trying to watch their iPad while standing on the tube or train is amusing.
That said, I thought Sense for Honeycomb was poor. I went back to Gingerbread, tho I noticed that there are several ICS ports around so I may try one of those.
I also feel like the scene is moving so fast that devices generally have really short lifespans at the moment, in terms of official and community support. We might see 2 more Android versions by the time the device starts getting out of date in terms of tech - I doubt they're gonna come to the Flyer, which means apps and services might not be available for an otherwise viable device.
All in all tho, well worth the investment.
I think I would of gotten the galaxy tab 7.0 plus if i had to do it again. I wanted a honeycomb tablet for around $200 to $300 and i saw the flyer had good specs and honeycomb and went for it. Didn't realize how much the honeycomb update ruins the thing. Now I'm back on gingerbread and while it runs alot better, gingerbread just isn't meant for tablets.

I've had mine 10 days shy of a year (purchased May 26, 2011)
The main problem i see is with software support. HTC really dropped the ball by releasing a beta version of HC as the official update. I call it beta due to the gps bug...
If I had to do it over again, I'd have a Samsung or acer 7" tab instead. ICS isn't necessary, just something that works as intended.

That's kinda my thoughts. If hc worked fine I'd be happy with it but it doesn't. It's like taking an old pc and putting vista on it
People say it's just business and I understand not giving us ics because of cost but leaving our tabs in the shape they are is just unacceptable. No reason why they can't just patch honeycomb imo. Personally they better just stay out of the tablet market from now on because I can't speak for everyone but I wouldn't buy another htc tablet!

In the 7 inch market,,the flyer definitely rocks! I had been researching various tablets prior to the flyer's release and had all ready decided it was the one I wanted.
I had been a fan of HTC products for awhile. Their devices are solid and built to last. After owning a flyer for over a year it still works and feels like new. Nothing rattles or is loose in any way.
The processor isn't the fastest but still works great. For me the major selling points where the large capacity battery (4000 mAh) and the scribe pen.
My line of work invloves a lot of handwritten notes and sketches. Nothing even comes close to the flyer.
In addition the size of the flyer is extremely portable and can go with me anywhere. I wish HTC had better support of their tablets, that's my only gripe. Fortunately developers on xda will always find a way.

This is my feelings. Like the product but the company appears to not have a clue
That's really my thoughts. It's an excellent tablet and honestly its perfect on gingerbread, but to get the extra features honeycomb brings your sacrificing usability and stability. HTC left it in a bad place and wants to pretend it never existed. And now they are banking their whole future on the one series, and already hearing things about it like screwed up multitasking, battery life issues etc. And beats audio... Who cares really? My phone has it and its alot of money spent for an autotuned equalizer setting that only works with wired headphones, which does me no good anyway because I'm using a stereo bluetooth headset. HTC is clueless. They can yield good quality products but they can't support them to save their lives. And the flyer was purely a victim to bad marketing.

I love it . I have several tablets and this View works great for me. I use the pen and lecture notes all day long and have the sprint $20 plan when I an not near wifi. I also use google voice so I can have the tablet be a phone too which works great on the plane too.
I can't imagine what features I would want that I don't have with the View.
I am excited about the windows 8 tablets but until then I am good to go. I actually bought two Views...one for backup.

I think HTC would respond better for a GPS fix in honeycomb rather than everyone begging for ICS because that just won't happen from HTC.

Nice to hear it

A somewhat misleading article. HTC only started selling the Flyer for $299.00 when the company dropped the price to move unsold inventory. At that point I believe the tablets sold rather well. I'm pretty sure HTC couldn't sell the Flyer for $299 and turn a profit. And that's pretty much why HTC has to leave the tablet market. Apple is the only manufacturer that can create consumer interest in a premium tablet, and HTC has never been a value hardware manufacturer. I suspect they don't have the resrouces to muster the necessary economies of scale.
I love my Flyer. It's a top notch device and it's carried me this far. But HTC probably needs to concentrate on phones for the time being, and wait for third parties to prove that there's a viable tablet market for non-Apple products.
Htc needs one phone and one tablet and that is all! So far the phone is close.

HTC's statements capsize the rumors of a new 10" tablet coming anytime soon. But aside from that, there doesn't seem to be any real "news" here. It says they have discontinued tablet sales in the US. Were there any tablets that were still being sold? The Best Buy Flyer was discontinued a long time ago. If the View and Jetstream were still being sold anytime recently, and now being discontinued, it just seems the logical end-of-life for those products. They have been superceded by higher spec devices, and probably haven't been sold in any significant numbers of some time now

Some folks are using the word "phablet" for a device that is a big phone, or a small tablet. Some form factors (like the Galaxy Note, and the Dell Streak before it) are starting to blur the lines a bit.
But yeah, the Butterfly J is being touted as a phone, as far as I've read.
I use both a phone (One X) and a tablet (Flyer), and I'd never give up my Flyer for a 5 inch device, or anything much smaller than 7" for that matter. I'd carry a 5" device in my pocket as phone, yes possibly. But for relaxing at home, or on a plane, 7" is likely as small as I'd ever go.

same here, using from DHD to One X, along with my flyer.
wish the support was better, i mwean i wish there was any support from HTC.
I still think HTC will come with a tablet since they seeing how other companies make money of it they wanna jump on too.
Like HTC didnt think it is neccesary to make a phone bigger than 4,7" (One X) now they com with a 5" phone/phablet?
Same will happen with tablets, dont think they will leave the tablet game.

I think it will be same sheat like flyer - only year of support for that tablet and then they will release new one.
found a cheap option to buy HTC flyer - is it worthwhile?

is this still worth buying seeing as it has been discontinued?
is it essential to update to latest Android OS?
thanks

I wouldn't buy a wifi-only model. I bought mine because it is also a GSM phone, and that will make me hard-pressed to sell my Flyer. Even though I've since acquired an A500, my Flyer is my day to day tablet because it fits in my back pocket.
If you can find the GSM-unlocked model and the price is right, I'd go for that.

I wouldn't, seeing as the hardware is well over a year old, and there are better spec'ed devices at this point. How much is the Nexus 7 in the UK? Google appears to be preparing for an update to the N7, also. The 8 GB version was recently removed from the Play Market, which is presumably in preparation for a new 32 GB version (maybe with other hardware updates?).
I use mine on a day basis, the hardware in my opinion still performs as needed. Unfortunately an official update will not happen beyond Honeycomb, there are how ever some decent custom Roms. My EVO view is overclocked on stock HC, and runs great. I would still say get a newer one just because the value of the new hardware and OS makes the updated models worth buying. My picks for tablet upgrades are Asus transformer infinity/prime (both these models are great.) Nexus 7. Both choices are worth the price IMO.

"A great learning experience"
Thanks for posting this. Absurd quote from HTC's "global online communications manager":
"It was a great learning experience for us, and they definitely met expectations."

A "learning experience"? What is this, high school? And whose expectations? Not mine. I had to send my Flyer in four times during the warranty period, the result of bad parts and shoddy workmanship. And after that, HTC refused to replace their faulty tablet. After the warranty expired, the charging jack failed. HTC said they would fix it, for a price. Just before I sent payment, I called to confirm and was told that they didn't have that simple part anymore because the tablet had been discontinued. They then returned my now-HTC Brick, and no one from HTC has ever responded to subsequent emails I have sent.
So no tears over HTC leaving the tablet business. No tears if they go out of business altogether, or if their CEO spontaneously combusts during a public appearance. Over a 2-3 year period, my Asus TF-101 has worked perfectly, but my HTC Flyer's a brick now, thanks to HTC's lack of foresight and lack of concern for their customers - or even for keeping their customers. Pathetic people, pathetic company.
