[Q] Rooted. What Now? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Atrix is my first Android phone. Went from 3 generations of iPhones, to Samsung Focus(WP7, POS), and now atrix. I have to admit, android is the way to go if you're a tech/gadget enthusiast.
Ive got my Atrix rooted, enabled free tethering/wifi hotspot. Got Titanium etc.
The question is: What other great apps/utilities are out there that can only be used on rooted devices? Keep in mind I'm brand new to android OS so I really don't have a good grasp on what's out there and useful. I went through the root process(however easy), and now I want to take advantage of it. Any advice is much appreciated.

Same here, I rooted my Atrix but I have no idea what to do lol
From where to get apps and how to add them to my device

Same boat

Go to the Market and download Titanium Backup and Ad-Free. Two good apps that need root to run.

I'd also get a cache cleaner. Most of the good ones require root.

Set cpu, rom manager, to name a few... May be more relevant with future development

No, others have said it just FC's when you open it.
How about Root Explorer, AdFree (for sure, absolutely necessary to me now!) and TiBu (which you mentioned)... Those are the big ones for me right now.

I don't use the first or second, but I believe Titanium Backup is fully supported. I don't think anyone has gotten shootMe to work (I think it has to do with the screens resolution for some people, but for whatever reason that's the only application I've found that won't recognize my root even after it asks for, and is granted permission)

Thanks for all the replys guys. Spare Parts and Root Explorer seem to be pretty handy, along with TiBu.
One question though: Someone mentioned getting a good cache cleaner. Will the "Clean up the Dalvik cache..." function in TiBu Pro do that same thing as a normal cache cleaner? I have no idea what the Dalvik cache is.

re: dalvik cache: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/76110-what-dalvik-cache.html has some good answers
Cache cleaner I mentioned was just for other cache (mostly app/browser etc.). Probably doesn't matter as much on the atrix considering the power, but on the lesser phones I came from, there was a nice speed boost when you regularly cleared those caches, and most cache cleaners require root.

Getting rid of the bloat

Hey!
Love my SGS2, a massive improvement on my HTC Hero!
But, I don't like the masses of Bloatware Samsung include with the phone.
I'm rooted, and have Titanium Backup installed, but I'm unsure as to what I can safely delete/uninstall to get rid of some of the Bloatware.
If anyone has been through and cleaned there device up, can you let me know what you took off please!

I can probably take a decent stab at recommending some bloat to remove, but I don't have a device to test on So it's likely you can break some features when doing it, though you might not even use the features it breaks
So I won't post it for now, to stop the hundreds of people who break their phone and have to reflash, but if you want me to run through some stuff, and you use irc, or know how to, you can pop into #villainrom on freenode and I'll make a few suggestions...
Pulser_g2.
That rings a bell.
I'm sure I used to use your Custom ROMS on the GSM HTC Hero!
And I'll come find you on irc soon - cheers for the help mate!
I removed 65 of the installed apps, lost some useless features, running 100% stable.
I downloaded AntTek app manager which is free and lets you freeze, backup and remove any apps and I've frozen all the hubs and buddies now as have no idea what it is and then removed accuweather, APmobile and few I can't remember and have had no issues
Thanks for the tip; I've frozen a bunch of applications on mine and I'll see if it makes much of a difference.
I couldn't get this work with AntTek. Does your phone need to be rooted for it to work?
Yeah sorry you'llneed to root to get any of these programs that remove apps to work. Think there is a version that doesn't need root but not sure what its limitations are.

Just checked and it says in the description for root/non root customers but if the guy above has tried it then doesn't look like it does alot if you're not rooted. As far as not rooting, its about 5 or 6 clicks, honestly couldn't be easier if you follow the steps on the root thread. I was worried but there's nothing to worry about and can't honestly understand how anyone could get it wrong.

Okay, a few noob questions rolled into one thread

All right, so I just my Thunderbolt a couple days ago, rooted it, first time truly rooting a phone, used Revolutionary. Now for my noob questions.
Will saving apps to my SD card keep them on the phone after installing a new ROM?
I tried installing a BAMF ROM with Sense 3.0, it was laggy and I couldn't access the market, said I needed background data. ROM said it required a MR2 or above radio, I don't know if I have that or not, I'm guessing not since I couldn't access the market. Is there a way to check which radio I'm using?
I'm using the free version of juiceDefender, are there any noticable perks to upgrading to a paid version?
One last question, is there a good calendar app that will have a useful agenda widget (similar to BlackBerry's today feature)?
I'd like to learn what I can as fast as I can and stop being a noob ha ha. I ask about the paid apps 'cause I'd want to buy setCPU and really ramp up my speed. I'm using a free app right now and getting 1.2GHz, but I want 1.4GHz speed.
Okay, I lied, this is the final question, can someone link me to a good easy to understand noob rooting thread that can really help me understand more perks and good to do things with rooted phones?
Thanks in advance, any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Background data error should only be happening because you don't have wifi or 4g/3g on,so turn on either. Then go to market it would ask you to enable background data if it off
As for checking the radio not sure.
But on the benefits of root, in my experience is unlimited I have also just go a tbolt couple weeks ago and I have been switching roms and kernels left and right to find the right one to fit my needs. And it's really better because you can customize your phone to something you like.
My tip is to read the sticky threads in the general section and q&a.

Radio
Settings>About Phone>Software Information>More>Baseband Version
Compare to the radios here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048128&highlight=radio
If its not a radio in the Gingerbread section, download BOTH radios, rename one to PG05IMG.ZIP and place on the root of the sd card, boot into hboot and let it update. After its updated and booted, delete that file from the root, rename the other and place on the root. Boot into hboot and update that radio. Doesn't matter the order. You can find a zip with both radios in one, i'm just lazy and did a quick search to find you that one.
As far as overclocking, look into custom kernals that support higher overclocking and the speedtweak.sh script is nice. I use IMO's kernals, then go into any terminal emulator on the phone (download from market), type su, hit enter, then speedtweak.sh, hit enter. Gives you some options. Also nandroid your phone before messing with overclocking speeds incase you set to a speed you're phone can't use. You can screw your phone up overclocking, be careful.
Custom kernels can be found in a sticky on the development page. If you started with the latest GB update, then you have the latest radios. For apps, use titanium backup from the market. It saves all apps and their data for you.

Good luck. Post back results or if you have any problems. And always always always back up current ROM and do a full wipe when flashing anything new (mod,ROM, kernel, radio) to your phone.

Don't not do a full wipe when flashing a kernel you are going to confuse him, if anything needs to be wiped just dalvik cache.
No wipe needed to flash a radio just do it.
Depending on the mod and what it changes just dalvik and clearing normal cache never hurts.

Okay, so I did notice one thing, I installed the Eternity Nightly theme, which I love, but I had to restore back to stock because when I used Titanium Backup to restore apps+data, it reset all my settings back to stock anyway and I really want to use the theme that comes stock with Eternity Nightly. Did I do something wrong?
when you do the restore on Ti, select only the apps you need, not all. Sounds like you restored some system files too that reset your theme.
I was attemting to try again, but there was an issue backing up the boot image. Is there a way to fix that?
Where are you backing up? I'm assuming through CWM? If it failed to back up, boot your phone up, download rom manager if you don't have it, and have it flash CWM recovery again. Then try to back it up again.
Yes, CWM, I have ROM Manager, I tried flashing recovery and attempting again twice, same issue, can't backup the boot image.
Figured it out, there wasn't enough space on my SD card for the backup, I found out when I tried to record a voice note and it said I didn't have enough space to record. I was using an 8GB card, but I think I'll have to switch to the 32GB. I was using sav ming the 32GB for a new mp3 player but a rooted phone could use it better I think.
So, I know what a sense ROM is, but what are the differences between and sense ROM and an ASOP ROM?
And what are the advantages of flashing different kernels?

AOSP = Android open source project. So Sense ROMs are based soley on HTC phones. AOSP is a more general Android OS. If you're running a Sense based ROM, you use a kernel for that specific style. Generally, using a kernel for one ROM on the other style ROM will most likely cause problems...

Hey id thought I just throw a couple questions in here since a new thread isnt necessarily needed.
I Just Picked up this phone, root is done, just wondering if anyone can tell me the best radio/kernel setup that works great with MIUI & 4G is stable?

[Q] Anything DECENT for root users?

OK so this is like the 6th time I've rooted my device, after reading many threads / websites, etc, all saying how 'amazing' root is. Well, I'm still disappointed.
Is there anything good to use for root users?
OK theres titanium backup, but that's useless - to me - as bloatware doesn't bother me and I don't **** around with my device.
Granted, GameCih2 is good, but it rips the fun out of games after a while.
I can't seem to find any other root apps that make me think 'Damn, I'm glad I rooted my phone!' just so that I can use that app.
-Title, Thanks.
Rooting is often better when using alternate roms.

If you'd knew you wouldn't start threads like this. You're like a guy who buys a lawnmower just because everyone says how awesome they are, but you live in a flat. So you just store your lawnmower in the living room, and have no use for it. If you don't need root, don't root. Many of us need it for certain things we do with our phones. It's not because all the cool kids have it, so we have it also.
Likewise root ls required to carry out certain tasks.
SGS newbies seem to root phone just because rather than as a tool required .

The person that is happy with the device the way it came out of the box has no reason to root. I would think the average XDA member is not that user. The ability to have as much control of your device as possible is what root enables. For instance Titanium Backup allows me to backup my apps so when things go wrong I can restore my device much quicker without re-downloading every app.
Rooting allows the installation of Clockwork or Streakmod recovery which enable Nandroid backups of the entire system. Then to me the ultimate reason to root is to experience custom ROM's. These developers that take it upon themselves to improve the operating systems that run the devices are incredible. Doing things the billion dollar corporations can't or won't do to make the devices perform to the utmost of their abilities. This is not of course for people that don't f73k around with their devices. You have wasted you time 6 times.

I did it to use Titanium to restore my apps. And to freeze uninstall bloat like tethering manager. My kids need internet on their crApple ipods when we're away from wifi.
Routing brings a lot of benefits and only one con: you void the warranty.
Basically the freedom root brings is unlimited:
You can fully customize your device to your liking. That includes boot animation, icons, status bar etc. it allows you to uninstall any app (even system apps) so it boosts up your battery and performance of the device.
But with great power comes great reasonability so you gotta be careful not to mess up your device.

Mostly right now it's just for overclocking to compensate for some the lag a lot of users are seeing as well as enable root applications such as Root Explorer to remove system apps as well as Chainfire 3d. Plus, it's just pushing the community forward (at a rapid pace I might add). You've gotta have a root available or else there's no reason for CWM.
In addition, it's just supporting the community. Da_G worked incredibly hard and was simply amazing at making the root process available so quick. Whether you root or not is up to you and I'm not saying you can only support the community by rooting, but we should all show the devs respect and thanks for the great work they are already doing.
Ok I dont need to do that at the moment. I'm trying not to restore all my apps as they were way too many and most I didnt even use. I'm trying to start fresh with apps and only install the ones I use one by one to preserve battery life. Tethering, no need yet.

I hear you guys, but at the moment I'm enjoying the device with no need to root. I dont experience this lag others complain about. Its really working rather nice for me. I'm familiar with rooting and as the dev threads start getting busier and have more things to try I will root but as for right now I just dont see the need and thats weird for me. I usually root right away device out the box before anything.
Only thing that may get to me in the long run is the inconsistent screen issues we all are facing, and battery life as time goes on.
I don't think anyone here is trying to convince you to root. Do it or not, doesn't impact any one of us.
Certain things I cannot easily live without -- Tethering being one of them so it was a no brainer for me. Plus I have been tracking data usage and you would be amazed at how many AT&T pre-installed bloatware apps just use data randomly. These apps I might ad I have never so much as opened one time, so being able to freeze them is also one of the main reasons I rooted.

I actually like that TiBu can freeze apps but what I dont like is that when I've tried to reinstall apps before that you have to install each one, one by one. It'll keep popping up with the option to install each one, and I'm talking about 100+ apps. Kind of a PIA. Is this because its the free version or is it the same with the paid version?

I actually like that TiBu can freeze apps but what I dont like is that when I've tried to reinstall apps before that you have to install each one, one by one. If you pony up and pay for it, you don't have to do this one by one. Purchasing TiBu Pro will be the best investment you can make for your phone. Seriously.
MyBackup Root is FREE and it backs up and restores apps one-click fast with no problems and it's FREE.
Did I mention it's FREE?
The names showing up in the Developer Forum are unbelievable!! So many good things to come with this phone. You are going to root eventually, why not enjoy the benefits now

What program do we need to use to increase the sd cache size?
I want to know the same, I think its sd booster.
And not sure why alot of people like ad blocker. I dont find the ads bothering much. Unless you guys are talking about pop ups which I've yet to experience.

[Q]Verizon Ellipsis 8 QTAQZ3

Hello all,
Starting a thread to see if there is out there in XDA who happened to pick up the Ellipsis 8 yesterday for Black Friday?
I bought my Mom a smartphone finally being she was stuck with old tech and never owned a smart phone so I got her the Sony Xperia Z3v. She is overly excited.
Anyways, they gave us for free Quanta Ellipsis 8 QTAQZ3, and I have attempted the following to get root access;
1) Kingo Root
2) TowelRoot
3) Framaroot 1.9.3
Neither one of these options provided root. Upon digging up threads on XDA, I found that the older Ellipsis 7 was able to get rooted with both Kingo Root and Framaroot.
I am glad we have more interest in this tablet. I would like custom roms, but to at least root it. I actually got three of these yesterday. I have tried almost everything to root as well.

Yeah I would just like to root it so I can remove all the Verizon bloat that came with it.
Yep I got 2 of them yesterday looking forward to seeing someone figure out how to root them.

I tried all three listed above as well with no success. I would be eternally greatful for anyone who can help with rooting this device since Verizon was so keen on giving them out like candy on Black Friday.
I picked one up, havent really looked for any methods. Its been a pretty good device thus far.
I think what people need to look for in the software is some bugs like how every other root method works... i know My Verizon requests su when its first run, but anyways, this would probably be the best place to look.

You can get rid of most of the VZW bloat without root, using the app manager.
I would like to see a decent custom AOSP ROM for this thing.
Seems to perform about as well as the original Nexus 7, but the screen isn't as sharp or vivid... the colors are a bit washed out and bland looking, IMHO.

Honestly i dont mind. For me its better than my ****ty Tab 4 that i had before it, so it works lol.
The only thing i wish is to gain root to put the nav buttons on the sides when rotated, but we havent obtained root yet.
Also multiwindow would be awesome.
Hopefully Someone Gets It!
I am hoping that one of our amazing Devs here on XDA will figure this out. I want root so I can get the full performance out of Tasker. Plus a few other things like a full debloat and such. I would have no problem making a donation to the Dev who figures this out lol.

Are you referring to the Galaxy Tabs? If so I 100% feel you. I don't understand how their phones are so gooood (IMO LOL), But they fail so hard on there tablets. Im beyond done with those until they step it up...ALOT lol.
Come on people, no news is not good news. I can't do anymore digging into this until I am off this weekend.
Any updates?

Until enough people get this tablet, there won't be any incentive to develop for it...
I think this tab is awful.....I can see why its free ...and to the poster who said you can delete the Verizon bloatware ..u are wrong you can only disable some. no deleting of any system apps including the Amazon apps....We need Root bad.....the stock OS is archaic 4.4.2 and Not to add insult to injury there is no updates anytime soon according to Quanta......

Well, disabling is as good as deleting. Deleting them saves a small amount of space, a few MB... You have an SD slot, add more storage cheaply...
It is a basic tablet. I would never have bought such a tablet, but for free, what the hell, makes a nice news reader and stuff when lying in bed.
When I want a real tablet I do have a Dell Venue 11 Pro that works really well.
I am going to keep looking and digging all weekend. There has to be a way to get this rooted. I know my brother in law rooted the Ellipsis 7 with Framaroot. But, none of the versions have worked. I know it is due to the newer build of Kitkat. It just takes time for someone to find the exploit.

Unless someone creates an AOSP or faster ROM for this device, I just don't see what Root will actually do for us... I mean, saving 50MB of storage or whatever by removing a few apps that can be disabled without Root, doesn't seem like much incentive to a Dev, you know?
If we could get AOSP with a lean and fast kernel or something, I would be all over that like Richard Simmons on a Cub Scout, but I just don't see that happening...

Well the main purpose for me to get root is to use things like ad blockers. Also to use xposed and titanium backup.

I have not used TI... I never really have anything to backup... I mean my pics and stuff I back up to my PC, everything else is in the cloud... when I get a new phone or hard reset one, install a ROM, etc... My stuff restores from the Play Store so I never really have to do much other than a few tweaks and set up my launcher and home screens the way I want...
Never used ad block either, but I am sure that all the ROMs I have used over the years probably had that built in...
I just wish the tablet was a bit snappier... I think a smaller footprint and a faster kernel in an AOSP ROM would help, but that's probably all you can do for these things....

Well titanium backup does back up your apps and games. But the difference is when you restore them it restores all data (like launcher layout) and settings like levels in games or app preferences. This will also backup and restore stuff you didn't get from the play store. Last time I checked the play store only restores app and not data.
Ad blocking would speed the tablet up a bit online. Also the tweaks you can do after rooting would increase performance greatly.

I was about to respond to the other member but you made all the points I had to make haha. I 100% agree. I need root on this thing so I can run TB, Xposed, AD Away, Root Explorer, Debloat FULLY and not just disable, and a plethora of other things root is good for. Bottom line is it doesn't matter what the reason, ALL Android devices are better with root!
