What resolution / color depth etc does the TV out give? Does it work properly with an AT&T Tilt 2 (I hear there are carrier restrictions).
Can it stream movies decently (SD card or online streaming, if bandwidth allows)? Where's a good place to get one?

I've been using the tv out feature a lot on my tilt2. Works great! can watch movies using core player, play snes using morphgear, I even bought a little 7" tv for my car, and will be testing some different nav programs. sorry i don't know specs, but i would imagine its 800x680 like the phone. I used to use my laptop to play movies on the tv, and surprisingly the tilt2 does a better job. definately a worthy 12 $ investment! also, dont buy from china unless you want to wait 2 months!
TV out isn't a resolution in the sense of a computer screen (pixels). It is NTSC composite video, with a 4:3 aspect ratio and 525 scan lines, some of which are used for VBI and thus not on the screen. Which is fine for images/video and such but unsuitable for web browsing or anything with lots of small details.
Given the above, if your video file is not too high res for the TP2 to play in general, it should have no trouble showing it via TV out.
As for online, I have streamed using 3G both Youtube and Slingbox, and used TV out to display it on my Pioneer AVH-4000 in my car with no problems (other than the flicker that is discussed elsewhere).
Don't know about AT&T limitations since I have Verizon. Got my cable via Amazon.

Mine gives me the option to choose which one when I plug in the TV out cable.
So, how does it look on a widescreen HD TV (21")? Does it stretch, or is that up to the TV?
I've been using it on a 42" TV to show photos and it looks fine, no lag etc and it goes portrait mode.

I just bought an HDMI output cable for my X2 and I am unimpressed with the results. The resolution looks grainy and all the videos look bad. Am I missing something?

Well, it starts with your TV not being the greatest resolution, and being a large size. What are you trying to watch? If you are streaming Netflix and things like that, they have been having issues with it streaming in HD. Are you running any ROMs? It also depends on the quality of the HDMI cable you are using. It does make a difference.
I have grainy issues when running some eclipse versions. When stock or on a certain eclipse version I get better video quality o er HDMI...also seems like if I lower the overscan quality seems better but that could just be in my head
I think the X2 HDMI Mirroring just upscales the phone's display without any sort of smoothing. So you get an effective resolution of 960x540 outputting at 1920x1080 with each pixel showing up 4x as big.
If any application actually supports video-out (maybe just the BLUR gallery), then it may output at a real higher resolution. But due to no standard on this sort of thing in Android, no application really supports video out and Motorola really did a crappy job with their mirroring service.

those are both for the original droid X, and would disable the internal display and output over hdmi. X2's built in mirroring is better than that.
It is supposed to output at full 720p.
Actually it's supposed to be full 1080p output. Mine works pretty well.

This is one of my pet pevs as well. The picture quality on the phone is always better than the picture quality on the tv. It doesn't matter if I am hooked up to a 720 tv or a 1080. Same poor quality. Not hd like the phone

+1 it says its supposed to output to 1080 but with all the pixelation it looks like it just upscales to fit the tv.

Our native res of 960x540 is actually an hd standard and should look pretty decent when scaled to 1080 as it is exactly half.
Mine also looks lo-res. I'm mirroring to a 21.5" monitor (1080p) and the image looks pixelated. Not using the best cable, but it shouldn't look like it just stretches to fit the screen.

Our phones resolution is half in each side so it is a quarter, hence "qHD".
The video signal the phone is sending is 1080p, but the phone is just scaling the internal display.
This is compared to the ipad2 (and maybe iPhone 4s) quick just mirrors the screen resolution without scaling in a 1080p signal giving big black borders. But apps can output true HD over the same connection, if they're programmed to.
anyone find out if there is a way to adjust the scaling form this device? did anyone make a rom that can do anything fo this problem?
I just straight up went to youtube and launched a Starcraft 2 replay from Husky - played full screen in what (I could swear) 720p - I could see every tiny detail - very, very high res stuff.
Everything's so freaking snappy, just tap - BOOM - it plays.
So, first impressions:
FAST!
Light weight - even my wife said it's very light (and she thinks iPad is way too heavy)
Feels very solid - rubbery back is very pleasant and feels luxurious
Screen is very bright at max setting
Auto-rotate is very fast, I think even more reactive than on my SGS2, even when playing full-screen 720p youtube vid
Screen needs a protector on it - I don't think it's gorilla glass, and by itself it's somewhat hard to move finger on it (it kinda sticks a little). Protector will fix that
Speakers - good quality and loud enough for me
B&N's UI is actually very pleasant - it's very clean, appealing to the eyes.
Can't get to any Android stuff through settings - it's all locked down =)
WiFi works great, good reception
Browser is very fast, I bet you anything it'll be much snappier than Fire's Silk browser
Looks like you can't easily sideload APKs. You can browse to them, but NK doesn't recognize the file.
Very happy I got NT instead of that wimpy little Kindle Fire.. (still adore my eInk kindle though).

I picked up my 2 hours ago also, here is few first impression i have.
Pro:
- 720p Youtube and Amazon HD video play smoothly, but 1080p on youtube is about 5-10fps
- Screen have warmer color then the Nook Color I have, in comparison NC screen have a slight bluish tint to it.
- Nook Tablet software version 1.4
- Screen is 1 piece glass instead of 2 piece like NC, i agree with DarkDvr, the screen will need a screen protector. 1 piece glass front is slightly better looking then the 2 piece setup on the NC.
- Speaker is louder then the stock NC, but not as loud as NC with the Nook Tweak settings. However good enough for majority of flash videos I tried.
Con:
- I believe the NT is running Froyo 2.2, not a big deal though.
- Flash player version is 10.3, which by itself it not a problem. HOWEVER I notice severe flickering in most of the video i played on youtube and amazon videos. I want to see if anyone else notice this problem with their NT, it might be that i got a defective NT, but when i play the intro NT video, I don't see any flickering. It might be flash player related.
So far I am a little bit underwhelm with the NT, I was hoping for smooth 1080p playback (like my SGS2 with a similar dual core Cortext-A9 processor). Also with the flash video flicker issue, i really having doubts of if i want to keep the NT or not, especially since i already have my NC.

Yeah, cause you're playing 1080p in a browser, and that is a feat only SGS2 can pull off. Try playing an actual 1080p video file in a video player. NK specs (including the back of the NK packaging) shows that it can handle 1080p video. Just not in a browser.

I never watched amazon videos, but I tried several different videos on youtube in 720p, and there was no flickering at all. I didn't see any issues, it was full fps, fast and screen orientation changed very fast.

Call tech support, it seems it's your unit..
DarkDvr can you do me a favor? Can you watch this clip from 60 minute Walter Isaacson interview in full screen. and pay especially attention to when it was showing Isaacson speaking, to a static background. On my NT i can clearly see banding and flickering, most video i tried does this, but i think this video is the easiest to make out the flickering and banding issues.

Ya I guess I am spoiled by my SGS2's Exynos processor, but man i had high hopes for the OMAP4's flash video streaming capability.
Also as far as 2.2 vs 2.3, it is nice to have 2.3, hopefully that mean we can upgrade to flash player 11.1 really soon.
I'll check it out at home (no wifi at work and terrible reception).

Edit: Ok, i checked out both videos - watching first one was more painfull the the korean girls. On the first one I had tiny, barely noticable flicker, but I bet anything its cause of the format that video is in, probably NK's hardware is forced to do lots of work during playback.
No flicker at all on korean music video - plays better than on commercials!

I'm considering buying a Galaxy Tab 10.1 however if I'm buying one I want to be able to connect it to the TV (a 46" Samsung* 1080p LCD) and play 1080p x264 (most likely in mkv container) smooth. I've been looking for information but couldn't find consistance, some say it's laggy and some say that it works fine. Also does it output true 24p?
So I'm asking here, does it work today and is it pretty much flawless or should I wait a little longer and buy a Tegra 3 tablet?
*Not an actual Samsung branded TV but it's a "designer brand" TV and they use Samsung hardware, not that it would really be relevant in this case.

Nope. Tegra2 doesn't do 1080p well, and if you want "flawless" you're getting a bit ahead of the tech. I don't know how Tegra3 fares; I've heard it's better, but not flawless. I've never seen it myself, though. I'd suggest just getting a dedicated media streamer (Roku or ?) or a PS3 for that purpose.

I've already got an Sandy Bridge HTPC for stationary media playback. To be perfectly honest I would probably not use it that much on my own tv but when I'm over at friends, etc.
Does it do 720p well at least? Thinking mainly of h.264 TV-Shows like the ones you can buy in iTunes and such but probably one and another x264 in matroska container as well. Now I'm not thinking much of playback over HDMI but rather on the screen (which is 1280x800 so 720p would be perfect for that screen). Would be nice to be able to put some movies in 720p on a bunch i 32GB MicroSD cards to watch on flights, train-rides and such (I frequently travel 3-6 hours and watching movies on the cell phone is horrible, laptop works if there's a table and proper space but I feel that a tabelt would be better for the purpose).
If it at least does 720p well I'll probably buy one and have until there are tablets which can handle 1080p flawlessly.

The decision is pretty hard, I previously had an iPad but hated it for several reasons. Some of them being that the screen is 4:3 & only 1024x768, your stuck with the Safari Browser which got the Safari css-sprite bug, Mail.app is useless in comparison to the Gmail app for android, especially if you're a apps user with several addresses and I get past all those with the Galaxy Tab however there are still some of the things that I didn't like which precist such as not being able to use it to watch 1080p movies on a FullHD-TV over HDMI, 10" is kinda big, it's not much smaller then my 13" MacBook Pro (8" would probably be more suitable for me), it's hard on the eyes as an e-reader and can't truly replace an E-Ink device, the usefulness of an tablet is kinda limited since an laptop is a better choice in many cases and the cellphone in most others.
I have to do some thinking (I will most likely end up buying one anyway and replace it with a smaller but specwise beefier device when "premium" 7-8" tablets who handles flawless 1080p starts popping up).
What about you who own this tablet, do you think it's worth buying one today? Is it the best tablet?
I've been looking some one the Asus Transformer Prime as well which is about the same price here but with Tegra 3, better battery life, better connectivity, keyboard dock with extra battery included. However I don't quite like that device as much, frankly the entire semi-ultrabook thing seems a bit silly especially since I've already got my 13" MacBook Pro for all the needs the keyboard-dock would fill, it doesn't look quite as good, it's wifi only (wtf!). It's a great product for all those who doesn't own a Ultrabook or similar notebook (maybe not a notebook at all) and need that but it could never replace a notebook, I already feel that the MacBook Air and Ultrabooks are to limited to replace my MacBook Pro so to replace it with a Tegra 3 semi-ultrabook would be unrealistic. Still if the Transformer Prime looked like the Galaxy Tab and had 3G it would seem like a wise choice (even if you'd throw away the keyboard dock).
If you are in the business for HD videos, go for an Archos G9. (Which will most likely get official ICS way before the GTab101, btw =/ )
They have 250gb!! models and provides flawless 1080p playback for almost any video format known to man and has a native micro HDMI port.
The 3G dongle should work with AT&T.
There's even 2 USB-Host ports!!; one full-size, one microUSB that needs a microUSB male/USB female standard adapter.
Support for USB keyboards, mice, wired LAN adapter, Hard drives.. name it.
If you're into videos more than games, it is THE way to go.
Some try to push tablets in a direction they really aren't suited to go and for some of us it's hard to relate to that. It seems that you have a firm grasp of the limitations and how they affect you though. If it doesn't fit you it just doesn't fit you.
To me it doesn't make much sense to put a lot of emphasis on playback of 1080p encoded video on a Galaxy Tab 10.1 since it is limited in storage space and isn't designed (AFAIK) to do USB host at the same time as HDMI out. Just copying a 2GB file onto this thing takes much longer than it would onto a USB powered external HDD so why would I load it up with a bunch of files when I could have those on a 500GB USB HDD and play them off of a Roku or something.
I do understand though that most who ask simply have a sizable library of 1080p rips already and for those folks I say tread carefully because chances are those files won't play back properly.
I love my tablet though, and carry it around nearly everywhere I go. For web browsing, scheduling, email and basic media consumption this thing is fantastic. I have a few of my son's current favorite movies on it just in case he needs a distraction (720p rips off of bluray) and I have a collection of my favorite TV shows from EZTV that I follow. Mizuu is fantastic at gathering movie and TV show data and presenting everything in an XBMC like interface.

Would that be possible? Using a CIFS manager, for example..

I'm not sure if anyone else pointed this out, but the GT10 doesn't have an SD slot (or microsd). There is a dongle for USB-host, probably would take a flash drive (or microsd in a USB reader) but as far as I'm concerned it sort of ruins the whole purpose of a tablet to have things hanging off of it (just my opinion). If you need more storage you should stream wirelessly (I never put media on the tab; google music, grooveshark, netflix, and allshare FTW!). Otherwise, go with something that has a bigger HDD or built-in SD reader (or just put up with either lower-res or less movies). The Archos isn't a bad suggestion for your purposes. As far as I understand, that thing is made for media. Of course, it's not as nice as the GT10 as a tablet (none of them are, including the transformer prime), but if you just want something for movies on an airplane, might make more sense.
Oh I didn't realise that it doesn't have an SD-Slot, thanks for pointing it out. That's kinda a dealbreaker for me. It's not a big deal normally as I stream most my media via Plex and music via Spotify but streaming is worthless both on trains and airplanes, even if they sometimes do got WIFI the speed is always closer to dial-up then broadband and useless for media streaming, even surfing the web is usually horrible.

I got my Galaxy Tab S3 today and to my surprise, Youtube videos and Twitch streams have black bars on top and bottom of the video. I knew the S3 had a 4:3 ratio before I purchased it, but I didn't think that it would affect video playback.
My question is if there is a way to make it show 16:9 videos without black bars at top and bottom?
You could chop off some of the stuff on the sides and convertting the video to a 4:3 format. Shouldn't have any bars that way...
I guess I just bought the wrong tab for viewing videos. The black bars is annoying as hell for me.

Surely you realise it's impossible to fit a 16:9 image within a 4:3 screen without either compressing the image vertically or chopping the sides off?
Mxplayer will let you adjust the ratio to whatever you want if you wish to fill the screen.
If you want true 16:10 then the Tab S is still the best option.

I went with Ashyx's suggestion and found a cheap used Tab S. The screen is about the same just with 16:9 aspect ratio.
I'm only going to use it for movies/series, watching streams and Youtube. Don't need all the other fancy specs the S3 has for that.

I honestly didn't think it would matter. I thought it was just a matter of using a program to change the aspect ratio and resolution to go with it and it would work. Like on a PC monitor or TV. Tried that and didn't work like I thought it would.
I went with your suggestion and found myself a Tab S 10.5 for cheap. I only care about the screen and not the other specs. Only difference between the S3 and S is the aspect ratio and HDR capable. I get my HDR fix on my TV.

Probably the best 16:9 screen of all the tablets out today as well. I take amoled over lcd any day with a tablet.

The Tab S is still a great tablet, with a plethora of custom ROMs. If the battery in mine could hold a charge for more than 30min of light usage I wouldn't have upgraded to the S3

This is exactly the reason I decided on the tab s3. My tab s 8.4 is a great unit plugged in, but dead within an hour or so doing anything other than playing poweramp with the screen/wifi off. It does amuse me that 16:9 content on the S3 is only a little bigger than on my 8.4, but the faster specs are nice for casting Kodi or Amazon Video content to the tele.

It does amuse me that 16:9 content on the S3 is only a little bigger than on my 8.4, but the faster specs are nice for casting Kodi or Amazon Video content to the tele.

I prefer the screen on my old Tab S 10.5 to the one on my Tab S3. It has a higher resolution (2560x1600 vs 2048x1536) and pixel density (288ppi vs 264ppi).

I think they both look good. I can't say I notice the ppi difference, but I don't exactly bury my face into the screen. I prefer the 16:10 ratio and the tab s 8.4 size, but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any decent spec'd tablets currently available.
I have both now.
Side by side when playing a 60fps youtube video, the image movement is smoother on the S3 compared to the Tab S, but the black bars is gone.
