HDMI Output Lousy - Motorola Droid X2

I just bought an HDMI output cable for my X2 and I am unimpressed with the results. The resolution looks grainy and all the videos look bad. Am I missing something?
I have a 2011 LG Plasma 50" 720P TV.

Well, it starts with your TV not being the greatest resolution, and being a large size. What are you trying to watch? If you are streaming Netflix and things like that, they have been having issues with it streaming in HD. Are you running any ROMs? It also depends on the quality of the HDMI cable you are using. It does make a difference.

I have grainy issues when running some eclipse versions. When stock or on a certain eclipse version I get better video quality o er HDMI...also seems like if I lower the overscan quality seems better but that could just be in my head

I think the X2 HDMI Mirroring just upscales the phone's display without any sort of smoothing. So you get an effective resolution of 960x540 outputting at 1920x1080 with each pixel showing up 4x as big.
If any application actually supports video-out (maybe just the BLUR gallery), then it may output at a real higher resolution. But due to no standard on this sort of thing in Android, no application really supports video out and Motorola really did a crappy job with their mirroring service.

Does RealHDMI or Xternal Display do a better job of this?

those are both for the original droid X, and would disable the internal display and output over hdmi. X2's built in mirroring is better than that.

It is supposed to output at full 720p.

Actually it's supposed to be full 1080p output. Mine works pretty well.

This is one of my pet pevs as well. The picture quality on the phone is always better than the picture quality on the tv. It doesn't matter if I am hooked up to a 720 tv or a 1080. Same poor quality. Not hd like the phone

+1 it says its supposed to output to 1080 but with all the pixelation it looks like it just upscales to fit the tv.

Our native res of 960x540 is actually an hd standard and should look pretty decent when scaled to 1080 as it is exactly half.

Mine also looks lo-res. I'm mirroring to a 21.5" monitor (1080p) and the image looks pixelated. Not using the best cable, but it shouldn't look like it just stretches to fit the screen.

Had anyone else tried.lowering the overscan in phone settings>hdmi
I mentioned it earlier but can't tell if its just my.mind playing tricks on me.
also I've noticed it seems to look better if I put the tv screen setting to normal instead of widescreen or fit to screen.

Our phones resolution is half in each side so it is a quarter, hence "qHD".
The video signal the phone is sending is 1080p, but the phone is just scaling the internal display.
This is compared to the ipad2 (and maybe iPhone 4s) quick just mirrors the screen resolution without scaling in a 1080p signal giving big black borders. But apps can output true HD over the same connection, if they're programmed to.

anyone find out if there is a way to adjust the scaling form this device? did anyone make a rom that can do anything fo this problem?

[Q] Atrix webtop resolution issues - stretched and blurry on several monitors

Love the atrix. bought the doc and its all high quality stuff..
issue: when i plug in the dock it seems like my monitors must be old or something because on my main 42" lcd, it can't display the correct resoluion, and on the other computer monitors it can only display the 'wrong' resolution meaning my 1920x1200 monitor can do the 720 tall, and the other 1080p monitor gets forced on the 768 tall res..
is there a way to set the resolution so it matches natively with one of our monitors resoluion standards? i plan on makin this phone my media center but its all outa wack on aspect ratio and blurry as hell due to the re-scaling. can't seem to find the resolution setup anywhere. when you first hook up a new monitor, it gives you the option (maybe 2 mabye 6 different res to choose from) but none of those work except the bad stretched out ones.. and hell yo ucan't get back to that screen ever again!
Nope. It really only works well with a big television or a really small LCD monitor. In which case, why not just get a PC? Im finding it difficult to use this dock for anything really. It isnt good at any single thing.

got a super cheat dynex 1080p tv that supports the phone webtop application perfectly. nice and clear. now my main issues are as follows:
1. upnp - mkv's wont play
2. hulu is a bit sluggish but does play smoothly when it gets moving.
3. samba working great but again, need way to play mkv's on android
4. netflix states that the browser version is not compatible! sucks.
works great for a back room media server and the cool factor is tops.
Convert the mkvs to WMVs. That seems to work the best for me and keeps original quality. I had to convert my 1920x1080 movies to 1920x1020 because the webtop seems to zoom every move on my plasma and I cant do anything about it. So by reducing the height of the video, it now fits perfectly on a 50 inch plasma.

hdmi out for movie playback?

how will the prime handle audio if i want to play a movie/tv show from the transformer on my tv?
i'm probably going to get this cable
http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10253&cs_id=1025301&p_id=7327&seq=1&format=2
but how does it do the audio? i know that hdmi can handle video and audio so will a single hdmi cable output the video and the sound from the transformer when i plug it into the tv? i think when i used my laptop i had to get a cable with a 3.5mm jack to go into the headphone jack on the laptop and on the other end were rca jacks to go into the tv but my plasma doesn't have rca jacks. i think that's where i'm getting confused.
Yes that cable will output both audio and video to your tv simultaneously.

I have Xperia Neo with HDMI and the audio and video @ 720p couldn't be handled any better IMO
All I can say is more than likely 1080 will be released maybe as official update or as mentioned above devs will do it
HDMI support is an essential for any tablet in the current market
I am really considering this as my first tablet
1080p Video File Size
1080p hdmi out would be great. So we are talking 1280 x 1920 output, yes? I am getting old and I have a hard time seeing the difference between 720p and 1080p.
If I am worried about 1080p out, then I'd also be concerned with having 7.1 audio out also. Might as well experience the "full" movie experience.
What about file size this 1080p video is going to be? Even with the 64 GB Prime what's the biggest file size I can dump on the drive? Are sd cards used with Android not limited to 4GB (aka fat32 format)? Any word on ICS breaking this barrier?
I cannot see a 1080p movie being within the 4GB limit. It's a challenge to get a 720p movie within the current 4GB limit.

You should not worry about this part. Yes it will.
The HDMI out video playback power is a task of the CPU/SoC, regardless of the actual display on the device. The Nvidia Tegra 3 SoC is well capable of playing smooth 1080p video.

This is the most concerning part with using the TF as your portable media watcher/tv-hookup-thingie.
From what i've read and seen today i think the Transformer Prime's hdmi output still sends out 720p, so no 1080p.
This is a real bugger since i want to use this thing as desktop replacement (hooked up to 23" 1080p+ monitor). 720p is way to low (big letters, small working area , blurry fonts when zoomed out)
Tegra3 as said can handle more than 720p.
Question is is there any hardware limitation?
Like the HDMI out, could that limit to 720p?

tegra3 can output resolutions way higher than 1080p... however, the TF2 device clones its own screen when connected to hdmi, which means you'll stay at 1280x800 or 1280x720 actually (minus lower bar)
But that could rather be software and by this changable if it really is the case.

it's like this. One's hdmi is connected its clones what show on Primes screen and that would be 720p when you are on homescreen, browsing, apps, games.
But when you start a movie and are connected to a screen with hdmi it will output the resolution that the video file have, if the movie is 1080p it will be 1080p if your screen will handle that resolution. The picture is only showed on the connected screen and on Primes screen you only have to media controls like play/paus seek and so on.

Is this true? I didn't find anything about hdmi.
It's supposed to work that way on normal Transformer too (since some update) but I never had time to test. Someone claimed that it works though - 1080p movies play by HDMI as 1080p not 720p.
I would like full 1080p desktop but I doubt it will be there. Not in HC for sure. Maybe ICS will add sth like that?
Per Anandtech, Prime supports ext NTFS volumes, and 4GB+ is allowed. This assumes you also buy the dock, since Prime has no USB.
"External NTFS volumes are supported and the sdcard file system supports files greater than 4GB in size, so I copied a 15GB 1080p Blu-ray rip of A Quantum of Solace from a USB stick to the Prime. I had to use DICE Player to get audio but otherwise the clip just worked."
Per TheVerge, reviewer reports HDMI output on 52" TV "felt like I was watching a Blu-ray movie." The implication is that it's 1080p output, although it wasn't explicitly stated.

The day when tablets gets 1080p screens and a OS that is setup for that you will get 1080p on the external screen even when you just use the homescreen, browser,App.
movies played on transformer when hdmi is connected will be shown on external screen in their native (correct word?) resolution.
480p will be 480
720p video will be 720p
1080p video will be 1080p
Homescreen and all other places in the UI will be clone to the big screen in 720p because primes screen is 1280*800

Best Buy is selling a 720P Dynex TV for 249.99. I have had my fair share of HD TVs and I must say anything over 32'', 1080P is preferred. 32'' and below, you won't notice the difference between 720P and 1080P. Again, my own opinion.

it depends on a few variables. How far away will you be sitting? How big is the screen?
I have a 62" 1080p in my bedroom. It is a large bedroom and my bed is about 14 foot from the screen. I like the extra resolution at that distance.
I have a 50" 720p in my living room. my couch is only 10 foot from the screen. It is fine at that distance. If I push my Couch back to where it would be closer 12 foot away though, not as good.
I say a 720 is fine on 50 our less as long as you aren't sitting too far away.
But it also depends on how much difference in cost you are talking. A few years ago there was several hundred difference between the two. Now I think the gap has closed.
I would opt for the 1080, but the 720 wouldn't be out of the question.

yea i got a 720 p 32 inch and it looks just ass sharp as the 50 inch 1080 p in the other room i say if its a small tv 720 p is fine but if its over 32 i would get 1080p
I bought a 42 inch insignia brand 720p plasama for 185 on black Friday
I only use it for my xbox 360 ... It really all depends on what it will be used for... And most things upscale to HD.but that is a whole other topic/debate
Personally i dont see a difference in a tv thats 32" or smaller.
Everyone has hit it right on. 32 inches and less no user discernable difference between 720p and 1080p. Larger than 32 inches I would not get a 720p, however there are not many available anymore.
Also to consider is the source.
Blue Ray is 1080p
HDTV depends on the service (satellite, cable, etc.) but most TV is either 1080i or 720p and from what I've been told the way 1080i scales on a 1080p tv it is no better than 720p.
Also, different carriers compress their signal more or less. My experience has been that Time Warner really compresses theirs and so HD on Time Warner Cable looks like crap. I have Dish Network and it is great. Some Prefer Direct TV, but I have always thought my Dish Network service is the sharpest.

end of story.
Just as everyone has said, it really depends on what you are connecting to it. I know what you are talking about, and right now, you can get a steal of a deal for a 50" plasma 720p for like 6ooish. Who is your cable provider? Do you have HD setup? Do you have a blu-ray player? Are you connecting a ps3/xbox to it? Personally, I would rather have 1080. It's not that much more price wise. You can get a 51" samsung 1080p for 899.
http://www.brandsmartusa.com/Products/1467-Plasma-Flat-Panel-Television
Even the 3d TV's are dropping in price too. Look around at Brandsmart, Hhgregg, tigerdirect.com, newegg.com, and microcenter.com. Some of the best prices I've found. I'm in the market for a 50" 3d tv, but haven't found the one just yet.
1080p or higher.... Nothing less.
If you have the money go for 4k x 2k
I use my 32" as a computer monitor so 1080p is Needed otherwise everything would be huge..its got 3D too so I'm all set. $500
Nothing fancy,just a Vizio.

Unless you are using a CRT 1080i is not as sharpas 720p FYi. 1080i is interpolated from 2 560p images. CRTs are designed for interpolation and LCD's/Plasmas are designed for progressive "i" vs "p". So on an LCD/Plasma you are going to lose quality. So in the case of HD screens bigger #'s don't always mean better. Also refresh rates and contrast ratio are other factors you need to look into. The bigger the Hz the better, the smaller the Ms the better and the bigger the contrast ratio the better.
If you never saw a movie 1080p and ony ever saw moveis in 720p you wouldn't know you were missing anything. If you aren't bothered by the fact that you will know there is better out there and the movie you are watching can look better, then 720p will be the better choice. If that will eat away at you whenever you watch a movie then get a 1080p because you will end up with one anyway.
My $0.02.
Cheers.

Some questions about MHL to HDMI out

People who use MHL to HDMI out- Does the note's screen fit your computer/tv screen perfectly? Mine has black bars on the sides and doesn't quite fit right on top and bottom.
Although- when it's playing any kind of video it seems to fit absolutely perfect? There must be a way to fix this.
Also, anybody figure out a good way to dim the screen nearly black while the tv/computer screen stays normal? All the apps i've tried also dim the computer screen.
Otherwise with my bluetooth keyboard and mouse i have no use for my laptop whatsoever anymore but it would be nice to get these minor gripes out. Thx XDA!

The Note screen is not a standard resolution. Apps, games, and videos may all appear as different resolutions on your TV screen. Not much you can do here but change the settings on your TV.
I have looked extensively for some way to dim the Note's screen when using HDMI and have come up empty.

Not to nitpick, but 1280x800 is completely standard, and quite possibly the most common notebook resolution on the planet.
The deal comes from trying to output to a 4:3 or 16:9 display while outputting 16:10 resolution. The fix, obviously, is to use a 16:10 display, but thats not really cost effective. Hence, black bars.

[Q] 1080p over MHL?

Can anyone achieve full 1080p over MHL with their DNA?
I have tried two different MHL cable/adapters (A red Skiva aftermarket cable and the PNY MHL Smart Adapter w/monster cable HDMI cable) and I can only get 720p. I have tried this on two tv's (50" Pioneer Plasma and a 42" Visio LCD) that support 1080p.

Yes my tv also says "1080p" up in the corner when I connect the phone through hdmi, however the quality of what I see on the screen is most definitely not 1080p. Looks more like 720p when I'm in any part of the OS or even the browser or most other app, and when I fire up the Netflix app it looks like 480p at best. Now when I play a HD youtube video or a personal video shot in 1080p you see it right away, BIG difference! Crystal clear picture as if I was watching a blue ray. So technically its on 1080p but for whatever reason it looks degraded except for youtube and videos. This is exactly the way the HTC One X acted, 1080p on youtube and vids and 720p or below everywhere else. The thing is that the One X has a 720p screen so I didn't expect to see 1080p in the OS or regular apps cause it's just mirroring whats on the phones screen, the DNA as you all know has a 1080p so it was a bummer to see the degraded quality in hdmi out. Who knows, maybe it's my cheap ebay adapters fault but I doubt it cause if that was the case then it probably wouldn't show youtubes in good quality either.
