[Q] Thunderbolt TV out? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im wondering if the tbolt can do TV via the head phone jack like some of the galaxy s phones..... id like to have it display google maps on my car monitor.....

or even this would work! http://htcpedia.com/news/htc-droid-incredible-tv-out-cable-review.html

Having TV out would be great. The only downside to the Thunderbolt for me is the lack of HDMI out...

Though it's not the same as an HDMI-out, the Thunderbolt will be able to provide HDMI-out through an adapter.

I'm liking the first three accessories; Accessories Supported: HDMI Adapter, Wireless Charging , Extended Battery (3.7VDC, 2750mAh)
The accessories listed above with a 1 year contract is tipping me over to the TB side. My two concerns for the TB is the battery life and cellular reception. I have only owned 2 HTC phones; one was the Tilt on the AT&T network (the reception was sub-par) and the second is the Droid Eris (it does have good reception with the new radio).
The Devs have made the Eris into a good viable smartphone for the masses but the screen size is still not to my liking. I want and need more screen size and resolution to make it work well for me.
I have been thinking of waiting for the Bionic to come out and look at the comparison reviews before making the decision. With the 4G tiered plans looming over our heads, I don't know if it's a good idea to wait. Lastly, how is the earthquake and tsunami in Japan going to affect the availability of new phones?
Decisions... decisions... Both of my lines are up for renewal.....

It is still the 32gb card. I called verizon today because I am on the fence between this and the merge (assuming it has an LTE radio and how long it will take to come out?) I'm sick of the D2 and I miss HTC phones, so i'm going to be paying the full lick. I wanted to find out about data pricing and she said it would be the same, with no premium. And "unlimited". I'm kind of afraid to wait because of the tiered pricing coming up and I really don't want to lose unlimited data.
oh, and there's this.

I was in your boat with wanting to wait for the LG or Moto device but after hearing from my buddy on the inside, I ordered the thunderbolt so I could jump on unlimited LTE, Verizon will grandfather your unlimited plan and you'll never have to worry about going over and having to pay more, to me, that was worth it alone, I'll wait 20 months to get a new device for unlimited LTE, even if it's not in your area, more then likely, it will be over the next year or so, but from what I've heard from my buddy, unlimited data is going to be ending in the next weeks, not summer time like some of the tech hubs have been saying, I'm using the ext battery and waiting for a case that'll fit, love the device, will root once custom recoveries are available! Good luck with your choice
Oh and Radio is great in this device, personally I think it's stronger then my incredible not by much but usually where I have one bar I have two and so forth plus lte is a dream, no issues with using hotspots for my Xbox to get on some COD, bandwidth report under options in cod shows 10000kbs, better then my ll DSL at only 515 kbs.

There is no HDMI port on the phone, period. There is a new standard interface for USB->HDMI dual port (called HML), but I know the Thunderbolt doesn't have it. I looked at the port with my own eyes.
I think you and that PDF file are referring to the DLNA->HDMI adapter from HTC:
mobileburn.com/news.jsp?Id=10802
It will work good for us folks that don't have DLNA tvs, but don't assume you will be able to do Atrix style webtop, mirror display things. DLNA is for streaming video and music, not re-compressing what is on your Android/Thunderbolt screen and sending it via DLNA. Think about the lag on that and overhead to do it. Lack of HDMI, like the Atrix was one of my biggest hangups with the Thunderbolt. I think it was a huge mistake to think DLNA is the future. Webtop, HDMI, MHL, and/or WHDI are! Booooo HTC. But everything else so far is awesome with the Thunderbolt! So cheers HTC!

TB or Droid x?

My contract ends on the 2nd and I've been comitted to getting the Droid X. I wasn't aware the Thunderbolt was coming out this month. I'm on a tight budget...should I roll with the X or wait for the bolt? Also...do u have to get a 4g data plan or could you just get a 3g plan on the bolt? I am not stoked on the limited dev options with the X so I'm worried.
Thanks
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
Get the Thunderbolt. Trust me, it will be worth the 2-3 weeks extra wait time. Better hardware, should be good build quality since it's made mostly of aluminum, and what's not to like about faster speeds? As of now there is no information on the pricing options for 4G smartphones.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
That's the thing I don't want to wait and then get the shaft by having to get a 4G plan. I don't need or want it. I need to sell my Eris as well to be able to afford the bolt.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
I would definitely get the Thunderbolt. I also was looking for a Droid X. My friend got an EVO and I fell in love with the 4.3" screen. Then I started reading about the locked bootloader and very limited dev options for the DX. The Thunderbolt is just going to be an all around better phone, especially if you want custom roms and kernels. I wouldn't imagine the 4G plan adding more than $10 maybe $15 to your bill.
Again, I agree with Omen. If you're looking for a decent phone with many dev capabilities, this phone isn't for you. This phone is better than that; it's top notch. Get a droid incredible instead. It just dropped to $100 with 2 year contract.

I have the X i love the Phone but it does kinda stink that about getting custom Roms, like FULL ones with the new kernals and everything. From what i have been reading on line the 4g plan is going to be 29.99 just like 3g but you know verizon can change that any time lol The thunderbolt looks amazing is it going to have a impossible boot loader like the Motorola products have?
Talked to a VZW rep yesterday about our company phones and I wanted to also move to a new phone for myself. I asked about the TB and said I didn't want to pay extra because I don't live in an 4g area. I was told that there is no extra charge for 4g.

It is highly unlikely that it will have a locked bootloader. It would be a first for HTC to do so as far as I know.

A second considering the G2 and all that mess...
I'd go with the Thunderbolt. HTC uses better camera parts than Motorola, doesn't lock their bootloaders, 4G will be nice and shouldn't cost extra. I've had the Droid X since release and it's not been that amazing. I'm suffering (as are many others) severe reboot issues due to Moto's buggy .340 kernel and since we can't change our kernel... we have to continue to deal with this maddening problem.
I'm no longer a Motorola fan. Not to mention that HTC is usually a bit faster than Motorola on getting out updates for new software... and you'll get a front-facing camera with video chat!
I don't count Samsung phones... broken GPS and horrible software updates, plus a lack of Cyanogenmod... LG phones suck, and Motorola phones are too locked down. So, I see HTC as the only real player in the game today for quality, customizable Android phones. Plus, I like their aspect ratio for their 4.3" screens... not the widescreen size Motorola uses, which is too tall and not wide enough for me.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
I'm running the. 340 update and have not had one random reboot since ice update. With liberty applied and a couple of other tweaks its a great phone (DX) but it had very limited dev support because there isn't really **** you can ultimately do with a locked bootloader, it doesn't have near the support of my fascinate, and no where the support of my DInc, but with that said, at the end of the day, I use my Droid x for one reason. Battery life. I suspect the battery life on the thunderbolt wont be as good as the x, but it had great specs a great proccessor and more RAM, IT WILL BE A AWESOME PHONE. IM SO DRUNK I DONT KNOW WHAT IM SAYING! !

hmmm... do these units have an HDMI out or is the only way to connect the phone up to my LCD screen is to have a dock or an HDMI hack?
it would be sick if they had an hdmi out and we could run the lapdock screen and extend to a monitor, but then again i bet the graphics hardware does not support this.
but i see that is says comes with 2 USB ports. guessing this would mean we can connect a usb keyboard or mouse? would USB storage sticks be supported?
im curious how the hardware and drivers would behave when connected to the lapdock from these units. does the drivers load to the lapdock or phone or what events take place here?
I hope Motorola sees this post and thinks about the user. hdmi out please.

It was mentioned in one of the posts elsewhere that it also has a wifi radio. Although I can't confirm that.
Edit:
AHA, I knew i saw it mentioned somewhere...
In a bid to make the new LapDock more useful, the new version also includes a built-in Wi-Fi N radio in order to use it more effectively without relying on the phone’s data connection

Yep...way too expensive for just a "dumb" terminal. Personally I would rather have something I can plug my phone into and turn it into a tablet. Then would have larger touchscreen that can have keyboard/mouse added to it. More functional in my opinion. Guess if I was traveling a lot it would be nice to have.

Engadget.com is reporting $200 for the small one and $300 for the bigger one. If true, I'm in for the small one.

Am I the only one let down by both the EVO LTE and SGS3?

I've been trying to get myself to justify a decision of which phone to upgrade to. I've been with evo since the very first batch of OG's and i'v always been indifferent towards Samsung.
At first glance I thought i'd go with the gs3 because of its sleek design and removable battery, but after dissecting it a bit, something about it just isn't as appealing to me anymore.
If I buy the LTE on the other hand I feel that i'll regret it a lot. While it is a great phone in many aspects, it is severely flawed in just as many important ones.
It's the first android phone EVER to not have a removable battery and the bootloader is as locked as ever. While these two things may be easily overlooked by some of you, I feel that any true Android fan would be torn on going with any phone from HTC's new line of ONE/EVO's just based on principle alone. Not that I have anything against it, but I just can't be the guy who buys the "next HTC Android phone" just because it's the "next HTC Android phone". When a company is blatantly disregarding the consumer I find it hard to support them.
How many times have we ragged on Apple for not including a removable battery? How many times do we brag about having an "open" operating system? How many times do we glorify our expandable memory (referring to the ONE line of phones here)? How in the hell do you not question HTC's motives at this point guys?
you can check my stats, i'v been with HTC since day one...LITERALLY. Since the G1 came out i'v been an HTC user...but come on now.
End rant. lol
I just got my hopes up for the sgs3 announcement (strangely) and thought i'd have an alternative to the LTE but low and behold...
I don't know about you guys, but the evolutionary cycle of Android seems to be taking a turn for the worst. All of the phone manufacturers are completely disregarding consumer feedback and are focusing on more processing speed in order to fool the masses into thinking that more processors equates to "better performance"... I hate to say this, but I feel they are even fooling a lot of you "tech-savvy" folks here at XDA into think we need more than 2 cores on a 4 inch phone...Same thing goes for size. How in the world are 4.7/4.8 inches becoming the standard? I thought 4.3 was the biggest justifiable size as a standard, but I guess not...Say what you want about apple, but at least they realize that a phone is a phone and a tablet is a tablet. (p.s I hate them more than most of you sooooooo)
i don't know if i'm just severely sleep deprived or what, but this is the first time that i'v EVER been "Anti-Android".
End rant 2.
Anyways, back to studying for finals!

That's pretty debatable. In fact i'm willing to bet my life that the majority of Android users would argue against you.
Phones are evolving into "mini computers". Computers are not meant to have limited memory.
Also removing features like expandable memory is completely pointless.
If you read my post, I was trying to show that HTC has been very questionable lately. You may not mind not having expandable memory, but how would you justify HTC's decision to do that?

One X m8, easy decision.
The galaxy s 3, is still going to be a samsung, probably going to be able to cook an egg on it for being as thin as a razor with a quad in it.
I'd allow a little while before i signed up to that m8, the advertising is going to be epic for it tho, but like i said i'd allow it for a little while, let it get in the public domain b4 picking one up.

When the OG Evo came out I thought it was on the larger size, but for me it was ideal because of my hands. I never envisioned 5inch phones would become an Android standard though. I see the purpose of the Galaxy Note, but other than that it just doesn't make sense to me.
We have 7-10 inch tablets. Why do we need such a ridiculous amount of screen space on a phone. I hate to refer back to Apple, but they have a much more flourishing app market than us and they've maintained a sub 4inch screen size. Like I said though, I think 4-4.3 inch would be a pretty ideal standard.

And I agree to a point about the storage thing however anyone who is a tech person knows one should always have backups no matter what and if they don't give you the option to expand then needs bigger internal space... But like I said sd card is just one more piece that fails don't get me wrong it is a nice option but i think it isn't totally needed....besides that is something else the battery has to power n everyone wants a weeks worth of battery out of a phone lol

Yeah I agree 100% about having back-ups and what not.
But the principle behind releasing a "new phone" with less features doesn't appeal to me. And I highly doubt that HTC opted with not included an SD card because they were concerned with battery life.
If we were to judge usefulness of cell-phone features i'd say expandable memory is just as important as a camera. While we can debate that forever, it's my opinion because I use my sd card a lot. Much more than my camera in fact....I can't be the only one.
I also use my phone as my main media driver, whether it be music or movies, I use a lot of storage.
I wouldn't mind streaming everything since I have unlimited data and can buy spare batteries for $10 on ebay....oh wait.

Wouldn't know about the evo LTE.

The One X is out of the question for me because I'm with sprint...Even if I wasn't, i'd prefer the LTE over it any day.
I just re-read my OP and dam do I sound like a b!*#! lol.
Don't be made at me, XDA is the only thing that can keep me entertained throughout the night while studying.
All of my opinions still hold though.
I think what i'm fishing for is somebody to convince me to get the LTE because I really need a new gadget to play with.

Give my Photon new life.

I recently upgraded to a Note II from my aging Photon. Rather than just putting it up for sale or just leaving it in a drawer I thought I might repurpose it. So, I'm looking for some creative Suggestions on putting this old hardware to new use. Any ideas guys?
-WiFi Connection only.
-Bootloader is unlocked (v2.3.4, never loaded new bootloader.
-I also have a HDMI dock available.

Congrats on the new phone. I'm thinking about upgrading myself. Do you mind if you post some pictures of the 2 phones side by side? I wanted to see how big the phone really is compared to my photon. Thanks!
I went to Verizon and got the note 2. I gave our two photons to our kids. I took most of the apps off of them and left the games.

Buy a cheap obd2 adaptor from Amazon.
Then go to the play store and purchase Torque Pro.
You will now a cheap scantool to fix check engine lights and a really cool automotive datalogger with real-time gauges map view etc...
Use Roam Control to run on Verizon's network.
They will offer to sale you minutes now it's a back up phone.

Root phone get Roam Control from play store (there was a beta version floating around). Roam on Verizon try to make a call you'll get a recorded message on minute packages. I paid $25 for 100 minutes +/- good for a year. I forget the name of the company but they have a web site. I did this on a questionable photon out going calls only. You might have better results. You have to enter a calling card number I found an app that does it automatically.
I keep this in my truck and all so have done what "atroph" posted. It's nice to be able to kill the check engine light ;/)
And now that you can save a map you can have a GPS without wireless service.

ORD related marital stress :) Need a second phone...

So the Amaze community is really quite fun to be a part of as of late, so many ROMs: awesome stock ICS based ones, to CM 10 being daily driver quality, CM 10.1 very active, Viper port is very active, I want to continue participating.
But, when my wife wants to get a hold of me, she never can because I have the phone in mid install or setup of some new ROM.
Time to start carrying two phones or risk divorce. Looking to find a cheap stable android phone supporting 850/1900 3G band to use mostly for phone and text (and some streaming music either google or rdio). Has to be SIM card compatible with Amaze. All the new phones seem to have gone to the smaller SIM size. Don't need much storage, won't be putting many apps on it. Oh and unlocked(able) of course.
Any suggestions?
myTouch 4G (Glacier) I have one which is my DD. Have CyanogenMod 7.2 with Darkside kernel. I can go almost 20 hours on a full charge with heavy texts calling and data. Wifi calling is aces and accessories are cheap and so are extra batteries and my replacement screen and digitizer was only 15 bux when mine broke.
Went with a LG Optimus G from Canadagsm
Found a SIM adapter. Fingers crossed, LTE 32GB otherwise a Nexus 4.
Priced almost the same.

Theres a thing in the optimus g development section that converts your phone in to a nexus 4 so you can run n4 roms on it. So i guess optimus g would mean the best of both worlds

In an unexpected twist, my work gave me a new Galaxy S4 a few weeks back. I ended up selling the LG to a friend (whom I'm trying to convince to join the XDA LG Optimus G forums/community, and try out the ROMs there, mostly because I wasn't allowed too, lol).
Man, I hate Touch Wiz and Samsung bloat. I'm not allowed to modify the phone or the IT department will shoot me. It does benchmark really well, and the LTE "feels" faster than on LG. But I still find myself using the Amaze for regular app use, even if though the S4 benchmarks so much higher.
So if you like Sense and don't like TW, stay away from the S4 if you are looking for a new phone. But do get an LTE phone if your area has it, the difference for me is amazing.
Since this last post the number of new ROMs on the Amaze is impressive. What a great community!

Just curious, why won't your work let you modify your own s4?
And thanks again for your generous donation to sports everyone should be thanking you now lol

Sloppy grammar on my part. Work owns the phone. The gave it to me use for work.
After all the rave reviews and benchmark numbers I was expecting to stop using my Amaze. But the amaze with the latest Roms is a pleasure to use and I hardly notice any difference from a performance point of view.
