[Q] Galaxy S II Vs. Arc - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Looks like the Galaxy is better in every detail:
Better screen
Better performance
Slimmer
Only the camera should be better on the SE Arc
Question: how much better the camera is and how many people will decide on this point alone to choose the arc?
Another point is will the Galaxy sell higher price?
Thanks

why is arc's camera better?

Because of the Exmor sensor presumably.

i didn't know about that. arc can't record in 1080p though.
anyway if the sgs2 has a better camera than the i8910 then i'll be more than happy with it

The Arc's low light picture taking is really good and the screen is powered by the Sony TV Bravia engine. Other than that though, both companies are pretty bad at updates and everything else you said about the SGS2 is probably right.

The current SGS is a very cable night shooter, helped by it's very low 2.4 f-stop.
I can't see Samsung doing away with this but only improving on the sensor for the SGS2.... especially as Samsung which develop and manufacture very good digital cameras ~ they have to continually improve and be seen to in this area.
Personally, being an avid amateur photographer with many digital cameras of varying types and sizes I am looking forward to using the camera on the SGS2.

Give it 5 years and the smartphone will replace damn near every device in your house.

The photos taken on the prototype one seem pretty good, i'm particularly impressed by the last 2 which are taken at night outdoor. Hope the camera will be even better when the phone is officially released.

The camera on Nokia N8 is actually as good as a mid-range digital camera.. too bad its on symbian

Not a chance, I can put up with TouchWiz to an extent, but Timescape is absolutely awful. If people choose the Arc over the GS2 just because of a "slightly" better camera, they need shooting!!

I never said the SGS2 would replace the current crop of compact digital cameras....
.... but the compacts will need to push the boundaries further beyond taking shots if they want to remain.

I know, sorry if it sounded like that. Just wanted to say I'd like it if phones could replace compacts.
Yup, agree with your second part (but then it pretty much applies to anything).

Not at all. I'd have to carry an awkward cable around. I normally don't have a backpack or man-purse. My 2 USB sticks just hang out on my key ring.
I would never consider my phone an adequate replacement.

I'm the same way, I keep 2 usb sticks that have key-ring holes on them. They are always being used so I would say the phone can't replace them yet.

I think that most people don't realize is that thanks to the pentile display pictures don't look as good as they really are, if you transfer your pics to your computer you will see how good they truly are..
I would say that 75% (or maybe more) of the pictures I take with my photon are pretty good.. and 25% are great!
Using apps like Camera ZOOM FX, Camera 360 ultimate and HDR+ (not really a fan of the Vignette app)
You can improve your results.

in my opinion its best to take the picture without any effects and add the effect after with a program or something cause think about it this way ,take a picture in black and white (or any other effect ) and you lose some of the details about the picture that you never get back !
I like the camera on the Photon but I find that my battery life starts plummeting when I'm walking around snapping shots here and there all day. I don't know if it's the camera or maybe just the increased time the screen is on to take pictures. I try to keep my brightness as low as possible. Either way, I don't have to carry a separate camera on me to take pictures so I'm happy. Just need to remember to bring the charger.

Here's some tips I found for taking photo's on a phone:
Think of it as a camera
Holding your phone in one hand and trying to press the shutter button will only result in blurry, wonky shots. Holding your phone with two hands quite close to your body will mean your phone is much more stable and as a result, your images will be better.
Stay still
Having your arms tucked close to your sides and standing as still as possible will stop any blur caused by movement from spoiling your shot. Don't move your phone away as soon as you've clicked your shutter button either as shutter lag can mean your camera's still processing the shot so you'll end up with a blurry photo of another part of the scene rather than the person or object you want a photo of.
Use accessories
Many companies are now producing lenses for mobile phones that allow closer optical zooming, special effects, and more. One example of this is the Jelly Lens. There are probably many more, but you can just search around Google to find those.
Zoom with your feet
Use your feet to move you closer to your subject rather than using the digital zoom which can lower the quality of the shot.
Light
You'll be relying on natural light most of the time so get outside, when possible, and set up near windows or patio doors when working inside. If you need to turn a few lights on do watch the colour cast they create. You can tweak the white balance or there are apps available which you can do this with too. There are also exposure compensation options so you can brighten or darken your shot. It's worth checking your settings...
Be careful where you position yourself when shooting outdoors as shooting in the direction of the sun can result in flare, although some people like the effect and it can actually work quite well with some shots. As well as having too much light in your shot too little can result in grainy shots where not much detail can be seen.
Check your settings
Go into your camera's settings and make sure the highest resolution your camera phone can shoot at is selected as the higher the resolution the better the quality of the shot is. If you can adjust the image quality make sure this is set on the highest setting available too. You may also find there are various shooting modes on offer as well as pre-sets such as night and portrait mode all designed to help you take the best shot possible.
The lens
It's quite easy to take a shot where a finger or thumb is covering the lens so watch where you position your hands. As phones are put in pockets and carried around in bags they get dusty easily and due to us handling them a lot they get covered in greasy fingerprints quite quickly too so make sure you keep your lens clean and check it before you take any shots.
Try different angles
Working with a phone generally gives you more flexibility than a camera that's on a tripod so make the most of this freedom by varying your shooting angle and trying new shots. People don't always know you're taking a picture when you're holding your phone either, making them good for quick street candids. This doesn't mean you can take photos in places that say you can't though, you still have to obey by the rules.
Don't forget about post production
Using a phone to take photos with isn't an excuse for not correcting wonky horizons or adjusting the brightness levels in a shot. You can edit your photos with apps on your phone but the screen is a little small so don't overlook transferring them to your computer so you can edit on a larger screen.
Experiment with apps
There's no excuse for not experimenting with your phone photography as the many apps that are available mean you can colour pop photos, add frames, create film effects... the list goes on. There's also apps out there that offer you shooting advice in the palm of your hand so if you want to brush up on nature photography while out and about, for example, you can. Some apps you have to pay for but there's also many free apps available which are just as good. Some good apps are FxCamera, Paper Camera, Pixlr-o-matic, etc.
(Don't forget to get out, as nice as your house may be, the best shots are awaiting you outside...)
Good tip, noob. If I may, hold your breath as soon as you got a focus event if a fly is getting in your nose lol

Camera issue

I bought 2 LTE's at Best Buy last night, one for me and one for my wife. My camera is perfect, takes the shotts we all hoped for when we got the phone. The camera on my wife's phone on the other hand hardly ever focuses. Most of the shots are fuzzy whether outside or inside the house. I will post comparison pictures after dinner.

It's weird though, it is focused sometimes, then you move the camera or it focuses on something and it goes blurry and stays blurry.
So it seems like if I focus on something close, then move the camera to focus on something further away the lens doesn't adjust for distance.
Mines Does The Same Thing, When it Focus on a Picture it Gets blurry, then i have to exit out of camera and start it back up again
Is anyone having clicking noise when camera is focusing? Not sure if its normal or I'm just paranoid haha

This is too obvious, but did you remove the tiny plastic tape over the lens?
You may want to try a master reset in case it is something software related, which I doubt. But you may also want to take the top back off and clean the lens. Might help, you never know. Just start removing it from near the charging port.

Thanks for all for the tips, I will hard reset and check it out, although I doubt it is software. There was no plastic on the lens.
The thing is, the camera works well until it focuses on something close, once it focuses on something close, then it won't refocus on anything else. Now that I know what to avoid I will be fine until there is a replacement phone.
Viper, if they don't get phones in before the 30 days is up what do they do for returns? (I thought I read you work at best buy)

LOL, well I know where you're coming from but I would love to work in Mobile. I use to, actually. I was seasonal over there almost 2 years ago now, but they didn't have any positions open after the Holiday's, so I went back to Operations (where I worked during high school anyway). Didn't ever really go back, even though there have been some opportunities because hours were light and the mobile manager can be a ball buster lol but he is a good guy.
I'm told that atleast 3 times a week, they see different people coming in running my ROM on their 3D lol but they never tell them it's me because they don't want me talking to them "about non-work related things on company time" which sucks, cause I'd love to meet some of my users in person.
Well selling phones and what not may not be that bad and is still somewhat different then doing Roms and what not.
In my experience I loved computers still do to a point but I joined the military as a IT and still do it somewhat and still in a computer job but its drained the joy out of doing it for the most part lol.

When I look at the pictures I upload on my PC they look a little bit blurry, but when looking directly on them from the phone they seem "fine"
On .210
this is with my xt912 P:

The blur is probably because a phone's shape doesn't lend itself to taking a shot AND holding the phone still. Also, the sensor is teensy tiny, and it doesn't have a very fast "shutter speed". So, it's like taking pics with an SLR in dim light with a 1/30 second shutter: it's going to have motion blur w/o a stand. If you want crystal clear shots, use a vise/stand of some kind.
Maybe Canon's or Nikon's next pro-sumer DSLR will make/receive calls, texts, and play Angry Birds.
I use CameraZoomFX which lets me prop the phone and 'tell' the camera to take the picture hands-free. Those shots are always very clear. Handheld shots, not so much.

Oh will be nice to have a call with a 70-200 2.8 in hand
Okay, I'm lost....
Can anyone who still had pics prior to the leaks and NOW have one of the leaks post comparison pics? I mean seriously, as crisp as the photos are on GB, I can't see how there's such a need for enhancement to the razr's photo quality that it warrants a full thread. lol I'm still on a totally stock GB rom (anxiously biting my nails waiting for the update) and I'm ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHED at how crisp and detailed the camera's photos are.
Lol. Calls will be short with that lens on there. It would be funny though, seeing how huge people's arms get from holding a 4 kilo phone all day. They'd look like hermit crabs.
yeah its with ics leaks .204 let me look at my fb pictures maybe i got one with GB
i found one with GB
BTW - I've tried all of the "pro" camera apps available, and Camera FV-5 is easily the best one.
As to pictures on ICS vs GB, at least on .79, there isn't a huge change. It's all in the app you use.
The stock camera app on ICS seems to focus better prior to capture.
A good camera app should be able to take the same quality pic on GB as it would on ICS unless there was a flaw in the camera drivers under GB, which I don't think there was.
The Razr seems to have a decent sensor, but cheap / small optics. Don't get me wrong, it does take pretty good shots, but not like you'd see on a newer device with bigger, higher quality lenses. The sensor is only half of the battle, but people give the megapixel count all of their attention.
Some of the newer cams (like the OneX) have better optics and you can tell the difference right away. Plus a bigger lens helps keep noise down in dark shots.

Not satisfied with the camera

Anyone else not satisfied with the camera?
I already took a great shot but most of them just feel soft and not sharp at all!
A lot of noise as well when zooming in.
I'm quite shocked as my OnePlus 3 takes better pictures (GCam).
The selfie cam is the worst. On OP3 I can basically see all of my skins pores, beard hair etc.
On the mate it's just soft(no matter the setting).
I'm on firmware 122 btw.
Would be good to know if that's just my taste or a wrong setting maybe?
Thanks!
In general:
Very satisified with the back camera.
But the selfiecam is kind of 'boring'.
You should provide pics to make your case as the question is so broad and the answers are so many.
Took a few pics today and really impressed with the back camera. The front camera isn't great and beautifies every image and looks soft. Hopefully a software update could fix this. Came from a pixel 2 which I think are the ones to beat at moment for camera phones.
Back camera is really great. In selfie camera there is an option to switch off beauty mode. Try with that option and you will get better selfies than Samsung Galaxy flagships.
I just posted to a similar thread over in news aand discussion.....
I too am disappointed with the M20 pro camera, mostly indoors in not so good (but hardly terrible) light the images are really quite soft
Looking at the exif it always seems to choose a really low shutter speed and as others have said no OIS on the main camera. Like I said disappointing, I am on .238, no idea if there are any camera improvements to come on .266 or 9.1?
Light can change your thoughts
Yes the mate 20p camera tends to take soft and sometimes blurry photos. I blame the lack of OIS.
With a little extra effort you can take awesome photos, but for point and shoot many other phones do that better.
I just moved from op3 to mate 20 pro, principally for the camera and... I'm disappointed, my ops3 photo's with gcam are a lot better! All photos in middle light (and hdr condition) look like they are painted!
I tried to make some side by died) side comparison and one plus 3 photos are better in everything

Me is not possibile, I was keeping one phone in a hand and the other one in the other, setting i don't know maybe.. M but I just opened the camera and chosen hdr..., have you some setting to suggest?
Some photos are good but others no..., color are a little bit more ok and grass looks painted
Now in no more at home, this weekend I'm coming to post some comparisons if needed

Are you using vivid mode? Try turning that to standard
I'm very satisfied with the camera, I think this is all about setting, not the camera or the phone.

I tried that setting but it doesn't look to influence the "painted effect"
This weekend on going to make a more detailed test and on case I'm going to post some photos

Turn off AI maybe. Honestly if you're trying to tell us one of the best rated phone cameras of all time gets bested by one of the most mediocre, you'd better have some valid evidence lol
My only gripe is the AI sometimes gets confused like when it thought this shot was winter and it changed the images completely

That is a totally feasible complaint as I have had this happen as well. Sometimes AI is better off for certain shots for sure
That's why it is handy on the latest 9.1 update to turn on and off without going into settings. You can also of course click the X when it detects what it think it is. I have had no issues with the camera in default mode and actually find it performs better after the last update, especially the transition when going to 3x zoom.
what bugs me is the "hold steady while camera sharpens the image".
Is there a way to avoid this?

Nope, The phone is taking a auto hdr(thats even more extreme than the HDR mode btw) photo, generally it doesnt matter if you move or take another photo while the camera tells you that, i just ignore it.
