Not satisfied with the camera - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

Anyone else not satisfied with the camera?
I already took a great shot but most of them just feel soft and not sharp at all!
A lot of noise as well when zooming in.
I'm quite shocked as my OnePlus 3 takes better pictures (GCam).
The selfie cam is the worst. On OP3 I can basically see all of my skins pores, beard hair etc.
On the mate it's just soft(no matter the setting).
I'm on firmware 122 btw.
Would be good to know if that's just my taste or a wrong setting maybe?
Thanks!

In general:
Very satisified with the back camera.
But the selfiecam is kind of 'boring'.
You should provide pics to make your case as the question is so broad and the answers are so many.

Took a few pics today and really impressed with the back camera. The front camera isn't great and beautifies every image and looks soft. Hopefully a software update could fix this. Came from a pixel 2 which I think are the ones to beat at moment for camera phones.

Back camera is really great. In selfie camera there is an option to switch off beauty mode. Try with that option and you will get better selfies than Samsung Galaxy flagships.

I just posted to a similar thread over in news aand discussion.....
I too am disappointed with the M20 pro camera, mostly indoors in not so good (but hardly terrible) light the images are really quite soft
Looking at the exif it always seems to choose a really low shutter speed and as others have said no OIS on the main camera. Like I said disappointing, I am on .238, no idea if there are any camera improvements to come on .266 or 9.1?

Light can change your thoughts

Yes the mate 20p camera tends to take soft and sometimes blurry photos. I blame the lack of OIS.
With a little extra effort you can take awesome photos, but for point and shoot many other phones do that better.

I just moved from op3 to mate 20 pro, principally for the camera and... I'm disappointed, my ops3 photo's with gcam are a lot better! All photos in middle light (and hdr condition) look like they are painted!
I tried to make some side by died) side comparison and one plus 3 photos are better in everything

Me is not possibile, I was keeping one phone in a hand and the other one in the other, setting i don't know maybe.. M but I just opened the camera and chosen hdr..., have you some setting to suggest?
Some photos are good but others no..., color are a little bit more ok and grass looks painted
Now in no more at home, this weekend I'm coming to post some comparisons if needed

Are you using vivid mode? Try turning that to standard

I'm very satisfied with the camera, I think this is all about setting, not the camera or the phone.

I tried that setting but it doesn't look to influence the "painted effect"

Turn off AI maybe. Honestly if you're trying to tell us one of the best rated phone cameras of all time gets bested by one of the most mediocre, you'd better have some valid evidence lol

My only gripe is the AI sometimes gets confused like when it thought this shot was winter and it changed the images completely

That is a totally feasible complaint as I have had this happen as well. Sometimes AI is better off for certain shots for sure

That's why it is handy on the latest 9.1 update to turn on and off without going into settings. You can also of course click the X when it detects what it think it is. I have had no issues with the camera in default mode and actually find it performs better after the last update, especially the transition when going to 3x zoom.

what bugs me is the "hold steady while camera sharpens the image".
Is there a way to avoid this?

Nope, The phone is taking a auto hdr(thats even more extreme than the HDR mode btw) photo, generally it doesnt matter if you move or take another photo while the camera tells you that, i just ignore it.

[Q] HTC mozart camera....

Anyone know if a software upgrade will be able to refine the camera at all?
As it stands iphones camera ****s all over the mozarts shutter speed is too slow, needs ALOT of light to take a clean crisp picture and so on....
So yeah, anyone heard/read of a possible upgrade for it?
ps. Loving the mozart, dropped it 3 times (apprentice sparky) and no breakages. HTC know how to make a decent phone XD
thats something i would also like to know...
Can anyone took good pics on moving objects??
I hope there's some sort of fix, third party or official.
I almost bought a Mozart the other day but saw some sample shots
I thought my SGS had a bad camera!

Damn it I totally didn't mean to thank you for that!
Please tell me how the following photos aren't good? They're as close to perfect as you can get with a phone as far as I'm concerned!

Alex
the perfect photos u posted..... You have to be PERFECTLY still to take them, and even when u are.... the slightes flash of a light, movement will blur in low light.
The iphone cameras lense has an entire f-stop more than the mozarts, so as far as quality goes, the 5mp iphone camera is better. 8mp just means u can blow up your blurred photos bigger than u would be able to blow up an iphones... but when u have dark, blurry shots.... i know im using them anytime soon
Yet as i said in my original msg, in full light, camera is perfectly fine. Take a bit of light away and the quality degrades VERY quickly
Iphone has 3rd party apps that get every bit out of the camera, hopefully a program will come out on windows phone that will give us the same.
Panoramic camera ugrade app !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please!!!!!!!!!!
this is the pic I took this morning
for me I think the camera and the video recorder is OK

Quite surprised to see a handset with a xenon flash take such low quality images, what a letdown. Still wationg for the next android / iOS handset with xenon..
i dont know guys,
this looks like a damn good camcorder to me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKh-dotIhTs
but ive seen other videos too were autofocus killed the whole clip.
still you cant compare it to iphone4 cam like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ivosrlf0JJc
remember iphone4 is double the price and 4th generation cam
here is a nice compare of these two starting at 4:21
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eabDFVjIL20
mozart lacks in color it seems xD
What annoys the hell out of me with regard to the camera here is the button and the sound.
The button is too tight, I can't hold the lightweight phone steady when pressing it no matter how I try.
And then the sound. When you take a picture with flashlight, it triggers the sound, then flashes once for red eye reduction, and then takes the shot, flashing for the second time. Every normal person starts moving after he/she hears the sound, while the actual shot is taken some two seconds after.
I had a Nokia N79 with a 5MP camera with a Zeiss lens and it took fantastic images. The mozart ones are totally crap. 9 out of 10 are blurry for me. The noise cancelation is far to strong it it gets the focus wrong (at least a little)...
As soon as the first Nokia WP7 phones come out I will upgrade...
On the other hand there might be some issues with my camera. Otherwise I can't explain these photos: http://msmvps.com/blogs/bill/archive/2010/11/13/htc-mozart-camera-photos.aspx
Well... we have lack of control on the camera part... to be perfect.. more settings need to be done during the photo were taken... but with this Mozart... not even a single preset can be found... when you're in low light condition... you gonna find your pics in a bit "blue+ish" mode..lol....
I love to play around with the camera... for a still picture, i'm gonna share on how to create a Lomo "look-a-like" pics with your Mozart ;
Apps needed :
1. Photo FX Free
2. HTC Photo Enhancer
..............................
First , take any picture....and open this Photo FX,
Choose : Manual (brightness, contrast, vignette)
You need to reduce a bit the brightness, increase a bit your contrast... put more vignette... then save the picture...
Later... you need to open the HTC Photo Enhancer... and open the previous saved picture.... choose under "Lively" mode... and save... there you go... you gonna get a vibrant color / tone just like a "Lomo" pics... hope you guys like it...
does somebody know an app for camera with touch focus, shot controls on display and other useful settings like dslr settings ?
I've had the phone for 2 days ad have noticed that the shutter sound goes off well before the camera has actually taken the photos - hopefully HTC will fix this in a future update but for now my advice to anyone is to ignore the shutter sound.
Other than that I have been fairly impressed with the limited amount of test shots I have taken.
I am on the fence on if to get the Trophy or the Mozart. As crazy as this question sounds, with all the issues the Mozart has is the camera actually better in the Trophy?
And I am leaning towards the Trophy for a silly reason - Xenons cannot be used as flashlights.
But I do prefer the build quality of the Mozart.

I would not have bought the Mozart had I known the gun metal case was super slippery (for those people with clean, non-greasy hands) and the flashlight app (I made good use of the one on my HD2 so yes, I miss it) doesn't work.
My advise, go for the Trophy

Tips for getting better pictures with the G2

I know that the camera is decent. Heck look at this guy's album on Google+
https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/+LukasFrimerTholander/albums/5945766779380687681?sort=1
No matter how hard I try, the pictures I take, almost always look washed out. In most of the reviews the camera was praised for colour accuracy and reproduction. I'm not talking about perfectly lit scenarios but more or less like the ones I've posted above. Do you guys leave yours at Auto , Intelligent Auto etc. Whatever tips and tricks you can share I'm sure will greatly benefit the community.
[I know there is a thread regarding the slow shutter and focus but that's not the point over here.]
Cheers !
Mine look as good if not better. I use AI most, normal and manual otherwise. Focus isn't slow for me, shutter speed regarding moving items in less than full blast light are and get blurry easy. Software fixes needed. My still shots are incredibly brilliant and accurate for a smartphone camera.

my two cents
I just took two pictures, one using normal and one using IA. the IA is FAR better for focus, speed of shot, etc. But there is some serious work that needs to be done on the software for this camera.

I personally feel on the stock camera app , the auto ISO is a little bit too sensitive, causing unnecessary noise. I usually set the ISO to 800 (the max it allows in manual control) and the shot turns out significantly better.
Using IA pictures are somewhat better ! . BTW can someone modify the camera to save the settings ? because it always starts on Normal mode !
I used Intelligent Auto for the pics of my Spigen Case, seems to have worked well.
These pics are actually lower quality than the ones on my computer because there was probably some compression done during uploading/
Does anyone know of a way to make the IA setting stick? Every time I leave the camera app I have to mess with settings to get it back. I've tried just hitting the home button and leaving the app open but it reverts. Annoying! !
I agree about always leaving it in hdr mode but I also can't find a way to set it to stick

I'm going to Paris in about a month and will take dslr camera as main photo device, but I will also take pictures with G2.
For various shots I find iA and night mode in low light fine, but what mode do you recommend for city sights? Is it sports in the day and night mode in low light or should I use iA and will be fine?

Pictures are not as grainy with the lenovo camera.

Front Camera is TERRIBLE

So.. I was originally very happy with my purchase, but I just booted up Snapchat to send off a couple selfies from the new tech... And the front-facing camera's picture quality is GOD AWFUL.
It's grainy as ****, and it's got all these weird discolourations to it! Is that just me, or anyone else getting it?
Edit: Just took a couple pictures with both my S4 and Z2 to post here and show them, but it would appear that once you actually TAKE the photo with the Z2, all that awfulness goes away! Snapchat, for some reason, keeps it though. I think Snapchat might have to modify their app for this phone... And I don't see that being likely in the near future.
Here's the break-down. It appears that the built-in camera app greatly messes with the picture the front camera takes, and this might be some kinda weird feature. Anyways, here's two pictures from the Z2, one from the camera app, one from Snapchat, and a picture from my S4 for comparison.

Well either way Xperia Front Cameras are usualy horible so in some circumstances the front cam may produce horrible quality pics
Usualy this happens in lower light
Except I've found that it really /isn't/ that bad. Just that for some reason, Sony's software kinda... Post-produces the frontcam's pic after you take it. SnapChat doesn't do that, and thus, the pictures come out looking horrible.

Same here, I only have a problem with the camera when using Snapchat. Do you think it is fixable with software update? Are you on .55 or .69?
My phone is .55.
I'm on .69, and I was having this problem both before and after I unlocked.
I'm sure this could be fixed with a software update, but I have no idea how fast that would happen, lol.
SAME
Yea my z2 front camera is horrible too. Its really grainy and theres discoloration but once u take the photo the discoloration disappears but its kinda grainy. Is sony working on a slution or no?
I'm running CM11, it seems fine to me, at least on snapchat...
I understand your problem, but this is the 2.2MP front camera we are talking about, its not right to expect clear n perfect selfies especially when capturing indoors! I'm really happy about the front cam as it produces really acceptable photos! Outdoors, it is much better! I agree that there is some discolouration and grains but that is expected!!
Using the word terrible is terrible!!!
Same problem on snapchat
I used the front cam to take some selfies. Seemed okay once the pictures were processed. But in Snapchat the selfies turn out grainy only. Any solution? I
anyone got a solution for this. It doesn't feel right or logical for a high end phone

Yes that is indeed the case!! However, these distortions are not visible when I take selfies outside, even in waterfall!!
So I guess, when not even a single Human is 100% correct, how a gadget can be! Overall, front cam takes a shot which pleases my eye, and thats all I want from a inferior sensor.

HDR+ mode: barely any effect on dynamic range?

In my experience, the stock camera's HDR+ mode works great for suppressing noise in low-light pics, but doesn't really do much for actual high dynamic range scenes.
In a typical dark foreground/sunny background situation, my (2014) Moto X used to do a great job keeping the highlights from overexposing and bringing up the dark parts of the scene. My 6P, on the other hand, using the stock Google camera with HDR+ active, barely seems to do anything in this respect. Sunny skies are still blown out, faces in the foreground almost black. I'm not looking for an overprocessed HDR "effect", but this seems a little too subtle.
I just want to make sure this isn't a problem specific to my device, so: anyone else seeing the same thing?
Edit -- I tried a couple of dedicated HDR apps from the Play Store but they all say that the 6P lacks exposure mode so they can't do the bracketing needed for true HDR.
I feel the same. Compared to the LG G4 I had before, HDR on 6P barely does anything.
Maybe its my old eyes, but I can't noticed a real difference either.
Thanks folks. So it isn't just me.
Maybe "HDR" is just a poorly chosen name for this feature. Like I said, for noisy low-light pics it works really well. Just look closely while it's still processing: shortly after it finishes, you can see the noisy version being replaced with much cleaner picture. But apparently it's not optimized for high-contrast scenes.
Verstuurd vanaf mijn Nexus 6P met Tapatalk
Actually it works really well. Here's why: it saves you from blowing your highlights. It doesn't do much for shadows, however it gives you a very clean image where your able to boost the shadows to your liking and the image remains clean. It stays away from that garbage fake "HDR" look that most apps create.
Also! Proshot does exposure bracketing very well. Here is a screenshot of how to setup the settings for it to work. Use these settings and you'll be fine.

Hey, thanks.
What got me doubting was an example in the article where Google introduced the feature, here. In the second example (the landscape with the two girls in the foreground), the difference is quite pronounced. The image on the right, shot with HDR+ on, has a fully defined sky with visible clouds etc.
But I've shot images with HDR+ on that looked a lot more like the blown-out comparison shot on the left, with large highlight zones with no detail captured at all. Could be I was asking too much of it on those occasions, I'm not sure. I'll experiment a little more and try and get some examples.
ProShot is great, thanks for the tip, just bought the full version!
Hi, I've been struggling with HDR apps on the 6P thanks to the exposure compensation bug (https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=196815) and was hoping your Pro Shot setting might help. When I tried it I got three photos, but two were at the same exposure, while the third was much much brighter. It also doesn't seem to merge them together automatically.

Noup, you're not the only one I usually have to choose between having blowed out skies or having people underexposed ...
I just switched to my 6P from an LG G4. While I liked the HDR on the camera, I feel the 6P produces a better image overall. Much less sharpening/watercolor look to the 6P photos. The LG's started to look like fake watercolors when you view them on anything but the phone, unless the light was absolutely perfect, which it rarely was.
But with that said, HDR seems to be terrible on this phone with the stock app, in my limited experience.

Take a picture inside by a window and you can see the difference with HDR+ on. You can basically see what's outside the window with HDR+ on but the window looks blown out with it off.
This... I've written about this before saying that it shouldn't be called HDR+ but instead Low Light+. The HDR effect is minimal compared to the low light noise reduction.
Typically on an iPhone you can get reasonable backlit photos. When I tried to do the same on my Nexus 6p, HDR+ offered little to no improvement. I decided to use my iPhone instead which did a mich better job for actually adding dynamic range.

Pixel Camera vs. Stock

The port for the Pixel camera has been majorly updated and I just installed it. I'm trying to tweak settings and things (man there are a lot now!) on the Pixel camera with HDR+ always on and I was wondering how many of you are also figuring out which is the best setting. Any tips?
More importantly, has anyone done trials and seen which cameras is taking more consistently great pictures? The Pixel camera was simply but MAN it rarely let me down. So I'm tempted to try and use it as my main camera for a while and see how it compares to stock. Any thoughts? Has anyone done this?

The port for the Pixel camera has been majorly updated and I just installed it. I'm trying to tweak settings and things (man there are a lot now!) on the Pixel camera with HDR+ always on and I was wondering how many of you are also figuring out which is the best setting. Any tips?

I find the Google HDR+ camera better than the stock one on my Note 8. I'm attaching the settings I'm currently using.

Interesting... So did you try taking the same picture with both and compare or did you just seem to like the Pixel ones better?
Why did you set it to Nexus and not Pixel for that first setting? Just curious! Not sure the difference, haha.
Well, dynamic range is far superior shooting with the Pixel Camera compared with the stock camera; there's less noise too. I shot with both cameras, always getting a better result with the google camera. I set the conf camera to Nexus as was getting less dynamic range and dull photos with the Pixel one. I mean, I like lively colors . I think it is a matter of preference when it comes to color accuracy.

I took two low light photos in the same room, under the same lighting condition. The first one was shot using stock camera and the second one with the Ported camera

The one that starts IMG is from the pixel camera app, should be the second one. Notice the better exposure on the sign, cleaner lines on the fence and more detail in the leaves in the lower center. Coming from the pixel, which I unfortunately did not have with me, I feel like the pixel camera app is a definite improvement over the stock auto camera app.

Damn looks like it compressed the details out of them. How can I link full Rez?
I have taken some pictures inside and outside, I will post my results whenever I get home. I Forced HDR on both cameras for this. I will update this post with the pictures later on.
Edit: For Some reason some of the pictures take with the samsung camera are rotated. It goes like this first picture is always with the google camera and second one with samsungs.
This is really interesting. Thanks for the discussion, folks! I'm leaning towards the Pixel camera for a while. I love the interface of the Samsung one but the Pixel quality of photos is amazing....
Updated my post with the pictures see my previous post. Please rotate sone of the samsung camera ones as I have no idea why they are rotated.

How are you uploading full rez photos? Tomorrow I plan to take my pixel to work with me and the Note, to grab some one to one to one comparison shots on lunch.

This would be a fantastic test. Please let me know what your findings are!
I mean, if the Pixel got a 90 from DXO Mark or whatever that site is, does that mean the Note 8 should be a 90+? I think the actual sensor on the Pixel isn't that impressive - it was the software that made it so amazing. So if this software is truly 100% ported, I'd think our Note 8 camera could be even better!
(plus maybe the new Pixel 2 camera will be ported too...)
If you are having more success with the Pixel camera vs the stock can you please post the settings you are using? I've tried a few different variations and the Pixel camera is much noiser in lower light photos and it ups the ISO twice as much as the stock camera to achieve the same exposure.

Greetings,
I will upload screenshots of my settings once I get home today. Thanks.
can you both apps on the same phone at once ? or does having pixel installed disable stock camera ?
my only issue with stock camera it tends to over exposures alot of scenes like portraits and I end up having to auto correct. night time shots are on point.
