[Q] Which option would be best for me to get a Tbolt? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The low down is that I have a family plan with 3 lines. One of the additional lines for the family that I have will be able to upgrade on the 29th of March, while the primary line is June. So I have two options right now.
1. The verizon rep at the store says I can upgrade/extend my phone/contract for the primary line right now for 250 for 2yr extension. I would then order the tbolt on march 29th using the other line at wirefly and pay only 175. Then sell the new phone to cover the cost of the first one.
2. I just sit tight and wait til 29th and get the tbolt for 175 by using the family line then swap it to the primary line and hold on to the primary upgrade that is on june for another phone. If I so choose to grab the bionic.
The factors in these choices is will the unlimited 4g end before 29th (most likely not) and can I swap my contracts around and not hurt my 4g contract (something about paying a penalty fee if contract is changed when buying from wirefly).

if i am understanding these scenarios correctly, the first option would be where you essentially do an early upgrade now on the primary line and then a normal upgrade on the family line on the 29th and get the tbolt each time, and sell the tbolt obtained on the 29th, hopefully covering your costs but using two upgrades for a net result of one new phone (albeit a possibly free phone, depending on what price you sell tbolt #2).
OR, you would wait til the 29th and use the family line upgrade to get yourself a tbolt and keep the primary upgrade open for future options.
if i got that right, i would probably choose option 2. this forum has shown that tbolt launch issues are definitely present and so you could maybe benefit from waiting a little bit (less than two weeks). the tbolt isn't exactly state-of-the-art new and superior to current phones (not sure what you are running right now so cannot say for certain how it compares to your current phone) so it's not as if you absolutely need to have it launch day, and like you noted unlimited LTE probably won't disappear by the 29th.
the only reason i could see for going for option 1 is if you are running some junk phone right now that you hate and must have a new tbolt today or if you are super-paranoid about verizon ending the unlimited LTE option by the 29th. i'm still not crazy for this option because it's a tough deal to lose two different upgrade options for a single phone, even if you recuperate your costs. my $0.02, hope it helps.

Thanks. I was leaning towards that option too, the only thing that made me worry was the wirefly policy on swapping the tbolt from family line to primary line.

How does the New every Two work for thunderbolt

So my 2yr is reached on june. I got a pre-order for with bestbuy at the moment.
I still have my new every two gimmick from verizon. Will the discount be huge? I don't often wait til the end of the two mark before i get a new phone because i am allowed to upgrade prior to that.
Assuming the tbolt is still $250 instead of $300, I got the $50 giftcard that I paid for when I pre-ordered, I wonder how it compares with verizon pricing.
Obviously i should be asking myself if 3 months is worth the money saved. but I don't know all the variables.
1. will the availability of the tbolt be plentiful by june? i was told that the evo was hard to come by after the pre-orders came out.
2. how much would or might i be saving if i chose to wait 3 months. there was something about no rebates no more with verizon so that is nice.
3. i got an eris with gb on it, so will i be missing that much besides the fire power in tech.
4. and whatever i may have missed
so if you guys can help me out with some actual intelligent answers, that would be awesome. thanks.
The new every two occurs every 20 months (basically 4 months before your contract end date). Once you're in this window, you pay the contract price of the phone. Which in the case of the TB, you'll pay $249. If you have a preorder giftcard for $50, you can put that towards the $249.
However, if you're a primary line owner, either a single line or primary line of a family plan, you'll get another $50 off the $249. This last $50 discount has been terminated by Verizon, but existing contracts are grandfathered in for one last time.
So, if you fit all of these then this is what you'll have:
+ $249.00 TB
- 50.00 giftcard preorder
- 50.00 single or primary line discount at 20 months upgrade
------------
$149.00 plus tax
As a side note, the primary line of a family plan gets a new every two every year, but not the extra $50. Basically, the primary line gets the contract price every 12 months ($249)
I wonder if I will be able to upgrade early.
I don't get my new every 2 upgrade for another 6 months according to the VZW website, however they offered me the immediate iPhone upgrade. I hope I (primary line) would be able to get a TB as well.

The website, I'm pretty sure, doesn't show you your primary line 12 month annual upgrade. Its there tho... every 12 months the primary line, on a multi-line plan, can upgrade at contract price.

I thought I read somewhere that they're (Verizon) doing away with the 12 month upgrade option for the primary line now too.
From what I understand, even primary line holders will have to wait 20 months to upgrade at the contract price. That is of course people who signed up for a new contract after (I think) February 10th.
I could be wrong (and I hope I am), but that's what I read.

All the old policies are in effect for contracts done before this new change (Feb, January, whenever) so I think this person is good to go.
I know the extra $50 for the primary line was canned. It could be that the 1 year renew was too, but most people should be able it hit that benefit up one last time if it is true.

Is this still the case? I would like to know if the primary line of a multi-line family plan is eligible to upgrade at contract price every 12 months. I was planning to get a 1 year contract on my primary line but will scrap this idea if the primary line is already eligible for upgrade every 12 months.
Thank You!
(what is the benefit of 1yr vs 2yr contract for the primary line of a family plan?)

bestbuy does not discount the extra $50 for new every 2 since thats a vzw promotion... if you want the extra 50 off you will need to purchase from verizon... but if I can get the extra 50 off from vzw without waiting I'm going to use the 50 gift card to buy a case and screen protector and stuff... also if the bestbuy free buyback is still in effect when the phone is released I'll go to bestbuy so I get some return in investment when I go to get a new phone
I just chatted with Verizon Customer Support and inquired about the 12 month upgrade timeframe for the primary line of a multi-line contract.
This is still in effect and holds true. So much for needing to sign a 1 yr contract on that line
UPDATE: the info regarding 12 month updates for the primary line is false. I spoke with another CSR and this was dropped along with the NE2.

Bummer! Coolest thing I didn't know that doesn't matter anymore?
I am the primary line of a family plan. I didn't realize the "new every two" was affected by being a primary or secondary on a family plan.
This is what it says on my verizon account.
"You Are Eligible For An Upgrade on: 6/26/11 Your contract end date is 10/26/11"
So it seems like the most I can get from the Verizon "New every Two" in June when I am eligible. I assume that the discount is in affect at that time, but as of now Verizon says I can upgrade but without the benefits of "New every Two".
At first I thought I may get $100 off verizon phones if I wait til June. Now it seems it is $50.
For BestBuy, the only benefit is getting the phone early because I had to Pay for the $50 giftcard, so the phone will still cost me $250 + california tax. I never heard of Bestbuy giving me a discount because of whatever is going on with me and verizon.
Is what I just said accurate? If so I might as well get the tbolt from verizon if it is only $50 saved if I wait til june. If it is $100 saved, I might just wait.
Also nobody mentioned if the availability of this phone will be like the evo aka small production count so I may not even get the phone in june because they have to go into production for it once again.
Adding more info:
I was going through the motions of upgrading my plan and verizon shows me that I have an online discount of $50 for old phones such as droid x and blackberry bold. The fascinate has no discount except the re-certified one. So the "new every two" means nothing if i am aiming to get the tbolt?

Two Verizon reps told me that Best Buy can give me the $50 New Every Two discount. Of course, they could be wrong, as sales and customer service reps frequently are, but when they told me this, I documented who told me this and when. If they were wrong, Verizon will typically credit my account. They have always been very good about this kind of thing for me as I am a long term customer.

NE2 has always only been available for the primary line on a Family plan or the only line on a single line. Never for additional lines on the same Family plan.
You're right, basically. What you have to realize is, first, VZW has discontinued the NE2 program and the early upgrade (a.k.a. annual upgrade) starting with new plans. But if you have already earned the NE2 and the early upgrade based on your old plan, you are still entitled to use them for one last time. In your case, not until after your NE2 date shown on the website, in June of 2011, can you use the NE2. The "early upgrade" at "2yr new contract" subsidized prices can be used if you want to upgrade prior to your NE2 date.
After you enter into your next contract, both the early upgrade and the NE2, you will not have next time. They are the ones that have been discontinued on new plans.
As for Best Buy... the only thing your gift cert does for you is, well, it's a gift cert. Not really TBolt specific anyhow. Just a come-on to get you into the store and get a $50 sale out of you. You can use it for the TBolt, or something else. Doesn't matter.
The potentially really good thing about Best Buy is their "Buy-Back" program. It usually costs $60 for mobile phones to get this buy-back protection. But, until the 26th of Feb it is free. So... if the TBolt comes out by the 26th you can enroll in this buy-back program for free (i.e. sell them the phone back at 50 percent of full retail in 6 months (approx $375 - depending on BB's full retail price), 40 percent in 12 months, and keeps going down the longer you keep it. This buy-back is based on full retail, even if you pay substantially less due to contract incentives (i.e. $249 with a 2yr contract).
This Best Buy buy-back program is much like Verizon's "old" early upgrade program, which will be defunct with your new plan.
'Course, it's now looking like the release won't make it by the 26th, so maybe this is a moot point. If it does make it by the 26th, Best Buy is definitely where I'm gonna get mine.

Ugh. I just called and if I wait til june which would be my 2yr mark I would only be receiving a $30 discount.
Looks like I'll be grabbing the phone from Bestbuy asap unless the delay is reasonably near june.

Yeah, ever since they reduced the NE2 benefit from $100 to the lower amounts ($50 and/or $30 - depending on plan cost) the NE2 is hardly worth waiting more than a couple of weeks for.
Also, according to the above, 6/26/11 is your New Every 2 date - not your "2 yr point". NE2 comes after 20 months rather than 24 months.

yea, i misspoke. the october would be my 2yr mark.

I disused this free buy-back and pre-order thing specifically with my local Best Buy. They told me, for sure, that pre-orders do not count for this free buy-back promotion. They told me that you had to actually purchase the device before it would count. Otherwise, I too would have pre-ordered just to get the free buy-back deal.

Best method of upgrade for Current Evo Owners?

I need to start hearing some possible options since it looks like next month will be the release date.
I joined Sprint last year when the Evo released.
What would you guys do if you wanted the EVO 3D?
Thanks
Did you check your upgrade eligibility on https://manage.sprintpcs.com/specialoffers/RebateWelcome.do
Like you, I joined sprint last year on the launch day of the EVO4G at the $69.99 plan. This site says I am eligible for a full upgrade for the phone on my account. Interestingly enough it says at the bottom this program ends June 4th.

i have the same thing. I got the evo 4g at launch. up until april 1st the system said that I had a $150 credit avalible june 1st 2011. now it says I have a $75 credit june 1st and a full credit 4-1-12! All I did was call sprint telesales (they are the only ones that can do this) I very polity asked if I could have my upgrade back because I would like to get the evo 3D. they put me on hold, when they came back they said that I could get my upgrade back and that I needed to call on june first because that is when my account resets. She also said that she was making notes in my account to make this easy when I called back. i asked her to send me an email confirming this conversation. I got a email that had her specialist id# team name and date (dont think i need it but
I have had problem with sprint in the past)
So basically if you have a $75 credit right now you can call sprint telesales (888-253-1315) and ask for your $150 credit back. Mentioning the evo 3d may or may not help, but the rep did talk about the evo 3d for a second with me when I noted I wanted to get one.
Just got my upgrade back to $150..telesales didn't help me they routed my call to account services...all I did was act dumb about not knowing about the premier changes. I told him I had a full upgrade in March and all of a sudden my full upgrade was gone...so he went through all the details about the changes...and then reset my account thus giving me back my full upgrade oh yeah and made sure I got a email of the conversation

If I wanted it? I do. It will release next month. I will be absolutely flabbergasted if it doesn't come out on June 3rd (also my birthday). That would be a deviation from their tradition of releasing phones on fridays, big-deal phones on the first friday of june and also neglect to honor the Evo4G's anniversary(ish)...
The Evo really was a big deal for Sprint, just as the Evo3D is....does anyone remember Sprint's phone selection prior to the Evo4G? Quirky at best for dumbphones, random (crap) at best for smartphones....the hero or the moment or a BB....ick....and the hero--while a great phone--was a fluke.
So what am I doing? I will be trading in my Evo4G for $180 at Radioshack, I called Sprint and got my upgrade turned back into full (from $75) and I reserved a phone at Radioshack...so I will most likely be walking into Radioshack at 5am on June 3rd and likely walking out at 5:30am on with $25 in my left hand and the best smartphone to date in my right hand--as I was told (when I posed this exact question) by the RS sales rep who agreed, whose manager agreed and whose district manager agreed that they would all be shocked if it didn't come out on June 3rd....none of us know better, it just fits a pattern...and for the Evo a new tradition.
That's what I'd do.
if ur like me, i need an upgrade every yr
all u have to do is stick with a plan tht is $89.99 and up to become a gold member and receive a yrly upgrade. Next yr the Evo 3D will be a dinosaur and so I rather be a gold member than have to upgrade evey 2 yrs. I lost my upgrade in feb with the new changes but got it back cuz they made a mistake and put me as a silver member. I've been on the everything plan for months and tht qualifies me to be a gold member. i since changed my plan to the everything data 900 $89.99...if i go any less than tht then i'll be a silver member again! no waaaay!
before the evo phone came out, The touch pro 2 was a great phone but wasnt an android phone but the screen was big.

If you plan on upgrading every year then it should pay to go with the higher plan as it should run less then purchasing a new phone at full retail once a year.
Luckily I have been with Sprint over 10 years so I qualify for gold otherwise I would never be able to convince my wife to spend more money on our cell phone bill.
Being able to deal with Sprint for over 10 years, I totally feel like I deserve the yearly upgrade! I have been on the phone for countless number of hours over the years with some of the worst customer service on the planet and had some of the most stressful phone calls with them.
As a long time customer, I must say they customer service has improved more then words can describe from where it was back in the day......
I'm new to Sprint.. Got the original EVO on launch and was wondering, what if I canceled my account, pay the ETF, and open another account?
You guys are having a lot of luck resetting your credit to $150. I spoke to supervisors and a whole slew of reps without any luck.

A simpler thing to do would just add a new line then cancel the old one. Why go through to trouble of opening a whole new account.
Wouldn't it be much easier/cheaper to sell our Evos on Ebay for around $250 then buy the Evo 3D from Sprint for $425 (Assuming the Evo 3D is $500 minus the $75 rebate)? This all varies depending on the price of the Evo 3D and how much you can sell your Evo in Ebay.

Just checked that page and same thing.
It says June 1st $75 and 4/1/12 $150.
I am a little confused though. I am one year into my 2 year commitment. If i were to use this "upgrade" from Sprint, Would I be adding 2 years making it a 3 year commitment.
Not sure I want to to commit that long. Any idea what the outright price of the phone will be? Noticed you could also trade in my Evo for $150 account credit.

The upgrade pricing is for signing a new 2yr contract which takes the place of your current contract so you would be on a new 2yr contract, not 3yr.
They have a bunch of different options when signing a new contract like if are premier silver and only a year into your contract you can sign a new 1yr and get $25 off a new phone, or a new 2 yr and get $75 off a new phone (which you will be eligible for on 6/1). After your contract expires (4/1/2012) and you are eligible for a full upgrade you can get $75 off with a new 1yr and $150 off with a new 2yr contract.
The problem is that new phones have discounts and rebates which you're only eligible for with a full upgrade. As with the EVO the phone was $550 I believe w/ $100 mail-in-rebate, $150 upgrade, and it's $200 purchase price that comes to $450. The other $100 was an instant rebate that sprint gives you and I'm almost positive that you only get that rebate with the full upgrade price. I'm even pretty sure you're not eligible for the mail-in-rebate so the difference between the 1yr and 2yr upgrades is really about $275 rather than just the difference between $75 and $150. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

You would get the EVO 3d for the discounted price on the new line.
Now what can I do I have had the Evo since October and my upgrade was supposed to be this year but got it anyways the whole first month I exchanged it, all different problems. 3 times and now I have a white Evo with the same dust problems and light leak and a few dings on the top right any suggestions?
Sprint is starting to piss me off, they're trying to screw me out of my yearly upgrade and talking to customer service is a complete waste of time. Now I'm trying to post a question to sprints message board and this is the second night in a row it has gone down for maintenance at the very moment I try to post my question.... and now it's back up five minutes later.
Google 'customer service hall of shame' and you'll see Sprint's been number one for three or four years now.

Feel free to remove or move the topic if it doesnt belong.
Since I left apple for android a few years ago I used to get yearly upgrades when all of a sudden thy stopped. I called att and they said since I'm the account holder (share plan) and my portion of the bill is more I then get earlier upgrades. Essentially they said a portion of my monthly bill goes to paying off the cell phone and the rest goes to my monthly charges. By their logic...if I pay off my phone in a years time and they won't let me upgrade then shouldn't my monthly bill go down?? The att rep told me that is basically exactly how it works and she told be to keep checking to see if my upgrade date gets adjusted but it never does. 10 year customer paying $200/mo, I'd really like my yearly back.

I've never heard of this. On a shared plan any lines update can be used to upgrade another line. I.e. your daughter can use the update available on your phone line to upgrade her own and you could use hers 6 months later when her line is due. A good customer can usually be offered an upgrade 1 month early of their scheduled upgrade but not every twelve months. None of your bill goes to paying off your devise directly. What ever rep told you that is of their rocker. The fact is that they lose money every time sometime upgrades so they understandably have to be restrictive to how often this happens which is every 18 months.
An extra standard line on a shared plan is $10/month last I checked. This line also gets upgrades. If there are 2 people using the plan you can get the extra line and cycle the 3 upgrades to get upgrades more frequently. It costs money to do it but a year and a half is 6 months to long..

My sister is the account holder, but I'm an authorized user, and am always in att. Well I got two of our three lines upgraded early, both went with the skyrocket, but I then wanted the s3. Loved it but I wanted a bigger screen(found out the hard way you only get one trade in) so I traded my new s3 for a white note. Im the main line and we all get our upgrades like a year and a half in

You could be right but I don't know. When the Samsung blackjack 2 came out I got it on regular upgrade, maybe 10 months later I went in to the store to pay my bill and I was digging the iPhone 3g so I asked when exactly is my next upgrade date, she said I can upgrade now...I was like really?! So of course I did. I was 6 months in on my iPhone 3g when I herd of the iPhone 4 coming out, I used the text number to check upgrade status and it said I could upgrade in June of that year which was exactly when the ip4 came out (got it on launch day) as soon as I had the phone I texted the number again and it said I can upgrade exactly 1 hear from the day I got the ip4 (12 months) a year later I got the infuse checked status and now I'm back to 2 year upgrades, I got the note with my third line. So that's 3 phones in 3 years...highly u likely to be a system screw up. I called att and what I mentioned on the first post is what they said, my bill is $200, I'm responsible for the actual $80 plan, unlimited data and text, my gf is responsible for the $10 add a line and unlimited data and text, my 3 line no one uses.
So if att never gave 12 yearly upgrades than why did I receive 3 of them.

Loophole to keep Verizon Unlimited Data Plan through Costco

Hi All,
Long time member, but I haven't been active on this forum for a long time but I wanted to come in and give some details on how I managed to keep my unlimited data plan and still get a new subsidized phone. This was done through the wireless center at Costco, not sure if it will work at other places.
In order to do this you must have at least 2 phone lines on the account or be willing to open a new line. In the end 1 line will lose unlimited data but all other lines get to keep it.
Here is how this was done. I've got 3 lines on my account. 2 have unlimited data and 1 is on the 2GB plan. Only 1 of my unlimited lines were up for a renewal. I went in to my local Costco to check out the new phones. While talking to the sales guy, who turned out to be the manager, he told me that there was a way to keep my unlimited plan. I didn't really need unlimited on this line but I'd figure why not give it a shot. Worst-case I lose unlimited which wouldn't be a problem for this line. I tell the guy I need to know exactly what he is doing and he explains it step by step as he is doing it.
The way it works is that they have the ability to switch the upgrade date between different lines on the same account. For example, my contract on Line 1 expired back in May 2013, Line 3 (the 2GB plan line) doesn't expire until Jan 2014. He switched the dates for these lines. So now Line 3 is the one eligible for the renewal. He then renews the line which sets a new contract end date for Line 3 to June 2015. Line 1 now has a renewal date of Jan 2014. He activates the new phone under Line 3, which I confirmed by using my current phone to call Line 3 and the new phone rings. Then he reactivates the old phone back to Line 3. I call again and the old phone rings. He shows me the computer screen saying that Line 3 was just renewed with the 2GB plan with the new date. Line 1 shows a renewal date of Jan 2014 but still has the unlimited plan. he then activates the new phone under Line 1. I use the old Line 3 phone to call the new phone and it rings correctly. He shows me the computer screen and it shows the new phone on Line 1 with the unlimited plan and a renewal date of Jan 2014. He then switches the renewal dates back. Line 1 shows the unlimited plan with a renewal date of June 2015, Line 2 still shows unlimited data with it's same renewal date, and Line 3 shows the 2 GB plan with a renewal date of Jan 2014.
I take a moment and check my Verizon online account using my new phone and it shows that my plans have not changed. I just got my bill today and it still shows unlimited plans for Lines 1 and 2 and the 2 GB plan for Line 3, just as it is suppose to be.
Hopefully this will help others who might want to try this out.

Thanks for sharing this with the community, but you can also do this at any Verizon wireless store and even online yourself. Verizon doesn't have a problem with this because they are still getting a line on the account under a new two year agreement.
I don't see how you can do this online. There is no way to change the renewal dates around. I know you can use the upgrade from another line to get the phone than transfer the phone to your line, but you are still stuck not being able to actually upgrade using the credit for your line. The loophole I described allows you to use up all available credits. The guy that did this for me said that Verizon doesn't allow their corporate guys to switch renewal dates around so they wouldn't be able to do this. If any Verizon store can do this, great, but anytime I've talked to them none of them has ever mentioned being able to renewal my line without losing unlimited data. They only offer to use the credit from another line, but then I can never use the credit from my line, which is a waste.
I'll use my account as an example, I have an upgrade for a unlimited line that I can reassign to another account that has a limited data plan. Then I can upgrade the line with the limited data plan. Once I have the new phone, I would activate it on the line with the limited data plan call the phone to make sure it's successful and then reactivate the old phone on the limited data plan line and call the line to make sure the old phone is working. The only thing left to do is activate the new phone on the unlimited data line.

Ok, I see what you are saying. Your saying that you were able to use the unlimited data plan credit at Costco whereas you couldn't do so at a Verizon Wireless store. Well let me apologize because I was sure that we could do so since I had used an upgrade from a limited 2GB data plan on that line itself and then transferred the newly activated device to my unlimited data plan line, while reactivating the old phone on the 2GB data plan line.
I'm going to visit my local Costco and see what they can do for me ASAP.
Correct. In your post above you using the credit from the limited line to get a nice and then activate it on your unlimited line. This is fine and anyone can do this, but then the credit for your unlimited line just sits there and can never be used or you lose the unlimited.
With the loophole, it temporarily switches the renewal dates so you are just renewing the limited line (in your case, you'd be renewing it again, which shouldn't technically be possible, but is because of the switch.) When they switch the renewal dates back, your unlimited line has lost the ability to be renewed but you didn't lose the unlimited data.
Hope this works for you too.
A cautionary tale... Just got back from a Verizon kiosk in Costco and they told me they did the "upgrade dumb phone n switch to unlimited line" and had 3 people come back complaining of losing their unlimited. Anyone heard of this. He did say that Verizon has been looking for accounts that are flagged? I'm a lil hesitant to upgrade now.
I wonder if this is affected by the use of a family plan. In that case, all the phones fall under the same base contract, although they may have different upgrade/service termination dates - they're linked contractually. That's different than having different phones/plans under the same billing account - those would be separate contracts. AIR, the Verizon policy is to remove unlimited when there's a change to the contract, other than a simple extension.
Not sure about using a dumb phone. Mine was done using a 2gb line and so far my account still shows unlimited. If they try to change my plan I will complain like crazy since I did not sign a contract for that line.

I wonder if those guys didn't even activate the phone and simply activated it on the unlimited line, if that's possible.
If it's through separate plan/phone then I can understand but I thought the loophole was based on the family plan. I really want to upgrade but the thought of losing unlimited if frightening... Maybe I'll just Craigslist or swappa but how reliable are those phones....
Like I said, they activated it on the "limited line" first since that is the line that officially got renewed. Then they switched the phone to the "unlimited line".

[Q] Q's on Verizon Unlimited Data Plan Loophole

This is kind of relevant as both I and my wife are using Rezounds on our unlimited lines...
So my wife and I are on a family plan and have so far kept the unlimited data plan on both. Neither is available for an upgrade until mid 2014 but I wanted to prepare for it. I know that the easy way to keep unlimited is to pay full price for both phones but that will cost probably upwards to $1000 or better for both. I am also aware that I could spread the payments out on my monthly bill to help ease the hit.
But I have also been reading about the loophole using a 3rd line that has a dumb phone connected to it. A while back, I had added a 3rd line in an effort to get my wife a better smartphone. After activating the new smartphone on the 3rd line, I then activated a dumb phone, reactivated the new smartphone on the wife's line and dropped data off the 3rd line. I did this when Verizon had the promotion about adding a 3rd line and waiving the monthly $9.99 fee so it basically cost me nothing. However when that contract on 3rd line was up after 2 years and I started to get charged for the line I dropped it.
So I have a few new questions about the loophole from those that have profited from it...
Because a there needs to be an extra line with a dumb phone to do this, should I be thinking of re-adding a 3rd line onto my family plan now?
Because by adding a new line, I would get a new phone, could I then skip switching the upgrade part (as the 2 original lines aren't eligible until mid 2014) and go ahead with a new smartphone and add data, then switch the smartphone over to my line, activate and old dumb phone and drop data on the new line?
Or would this cause a "change" in the contract causing me to pay a penalty and losing the unlimited data on all lines?
And finally, has anyone calculated how much having this extra line would cost as opposed to just buying a newer smartphone used on say, swappa or doing the monthly payments for full price through Verizon?
TIA
Not including taxes, one extra 9.99 line for 2yrs is 240. So, roughly 240-300 for that extra line (higher number because of taxes, and each city and state taxes differ I pay nearly $10 in taxes for two lines in Phoenix, AZ each month).
Verizon monthly payments for a phone is essentially the full phone price over the two yrs.

I tried the extra line thing, I found I much prefer buying my phones retail to having that line for 9.99 which ends up a good bit more once the taxes and fees are added, especially if you're looking at more than one of them.

That's what I discovered after the promotional $9.99 ran out. IIRC, I was paying quite a bit more on taxes here in Chicago than the monthly service fee. That was the main reason I cancelled it the first time.

That's kind of what I was thinking. The only advantage I can see would be if I went with a new smartphone now on the 3rd line, transferred it to my primary, and then in a year transferred my wife's upgrade to the 3rd line, got the new smartphone at the upgrade price and then transferred the new phone to her line. Would doing this be a little cheaper than buying 2 smartphones at full price? It seems like it might be. I should still be able to cancel the 3rd line after two years because the extension in contract should follow the new smartphones to the primary and second lines instead of increasing the contract length on the 3rd line. Does that sound right?
When you use your upgrade, it extends the contract on the original line, not the line the phone is on
