Thunderbolt, why is the UI so LARGE - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So currently I have a Droid, Droid 2, Droid X, and Droid Incredible... I have been flipping the coin as to if I go back to the iphone 4 for a bit or get the HTC Thunderbolt since I love the incredible and it by far is the smoothest device compared to the iphone.
Today I went to play with the TB and it was kinda laggy, I even rebooted it and closed up all the crap that was running. I know that with roms this will change, however what concerned me the most was...
The UI is HUGE. We have that large screen and the UI is just jumbo, like it was made big for people with poor eye sight.
What I want to know is if there are any DPI mods like I have on my X that makes everything smaller.
I am not going to buy this phone if with all that screen I have to deal with jumbo UI. I did look thru settings and didn't find anything to adjust this.
I need help fellow members! I can't make my decision of TB vs iPhone 4 without your help!

Once we have root, the dpi will be the first thing I change. I'm used to 209. This phone is awesome, BTW.

Well basically I have until the 24th to decide. I keep getting stuck on how smooth the iphone always runs. However I am getting there on my incredible and this is faster than that.

I think this is substantially better than the iPhone. You will be happy to own one of the best devices ever made instead of a device that is falling behind.

I also cannot wait to change the DPI. Hopefully custom ROMs will automatically have this set to something more reasonable!

launcher pro
set to 5 rows and adjust app drawer size and its perfect
set web browser to far

not laggy.. believe me i had almost all the phones lol the tb its a fast device...

might have been because it was a display phone. I have the incredible now with CM 7 on it and it is as smooth as i have seen a droid to date.
I know about the launcher pro thing, but that doesnt change the rest of the UI.
I like to have everything small, so I can use up all that awesome screen.
I just don't know if this is worth while to hop from the droid x/incredible to...
esp no 4g in my area.

I had the sense from the Z and it wasn't much better. It's better than moto blur, but I still think its crowding.
I need this DPI thing to happen or else I may be tempted to go back to iphone 4

Haven't had a chance to play around with, but heard really good things from my VZW Rep. I get my hands on one tomorrow, so we will see what I think.

Definitely not the stock launcher - it's slow and laggy.
ADW is what I'm using at it's very solid. It hasn't FC once and the only redraws I'm having is with expanded picture widgets.
I used LPP for a day or so and it also seemed solid, however I have read in a lot of forums that people are having issues with it on the X2.
If I were you, I would pick a launcher that you like the best, and then lock home in memory with scripts that are floating around on these forums. I used the V6 Supercharged script today and I noticed my picture widgets are filling in much quicker.
Just my two cents...
I too use ADW, much better than the blurhome.

At first I was using lpp it was great I enjoyed the widgets that lpp has. I recently changed to go launcher ex I love it. It's extremely customizable. I also enjoyed the scrolling dock bar like on lpp. I haven't experienced any lag whatsoever using this launcher as well.
I'm using ADW because I was used to it coming from Cyanogenmod 7 on the Incredible. It's been very smooth and no hiccups whatsoever, way better than stock. But then, this evening after I disconnected from my vehicle charger and headed into a 3 hour meeting, my battery went from 75% to 25% when I came out, and the phone was in my pocket the entire time. I checked SpareParts+ and it said my phone was awake the entire 3 hours and blamed "Android System". I'm not sure what is going on now.
Eric
I just bought the Droid X2 because I got tired of waiting for the Samsung Galaxy X II to hit the US market. All the reviews I've read say the Droid X2 hardware is way ahead of everything else for performance and functionality. And after having the phone for a week now, I would agree. After playing with the phone in the store, I knew the Moto Blur UI was horrible and would need a lot of tweaking. But I figured that the dual processor could take anything I threw at it in that regard.
With ADW, some icon packs, and several aftermarket widgets, the phone now looks as great as it performs. I am extremely happy with the results, and am experiencing no lags at all. (I had to root it to get rid of that awful "DROID" sound the phone makes when it reboots.)

lpp even if im the only 1
i like lpp more i might be the only and my home screen doesnt redraw but maybe everyone 250 to 500 times i go to my home screen and thats not much i dont think and i love lpp widgets and i love my 3d app draw and its sooooooo much faster than blur but if u want something other than lpp id say go with golauncher its decent
SPB Shell 3D is a great fast apparently for this and is getting great reviews. Get it from market and give it a try.

Have you tried the new touchwiz? Give it a try. It actually works great and doesn't require a lot of resources like other UI, it's not as huge of a memory hog as sense is and quite frankly it gets the job done better than Sense did IMO. I'm a former HOX owner.
True sense is a memory resource hog but compared to Touchwiz UI its beautiful and does the job,
I like the concepts of Touchwiz UI and the "smart" things it can do, but really I want something nice to look at at the same time.
I love Sense 4 and I also love stock ICS, either of those 2 will get the job done, the one X is my fav phone at the moment due to Tegra Zone, S3 will be my second phone of choice. Nothing will change this as this is how I feel about HTC which have tried to do something different whereas Samsung just copy n paste from iOS which I don't really like (apple vs samsung lawsuits come to mind)
Yep I just pre ordered an s3, had the evo lte in my hands about two weeks. I feel like a real asshole for doing this cause I've been with HTC a long time... And I know I'm gonna hate the display comparatively but that being said at least I can take the damn battery out, I think this was the biggest selling point for me... I hate being tethered to a damn cord all the time... So I'm biting the bullet... I don't really know where to start as there are posts all over the place for the 3 gazillion varients of this phone, I can't seem to find a sprint s3 section only as I doubt any of these other roms will play... Root method should be the same though at least for American models??? Little help? Lol, TIF...

It's not all about sense, it's the developers and build quality. Half the time I run non-sense roms, hell they even have touch whiz running on the lte:-\ that being said, lol, just waiting for the phone in the mail...

How smooth is it?

Hello guys a question about the performance of the phone
Is there any FRAMEDROP or STUTTERING when moving around the UI especialliy when OPENING and CLOSING APPS if you could can, can you close and open google maps and tell me if it lag or fps drop?
Being extremely OCD about android lag as i have return and sold various device such as the tab 10.1, NOTE 1, and the nexus 10 because the lagginess and stuttering when opening apps drove me CRAZY.
Now pardon me if i sound rude but can your eyes notice the difference between 30 fps and 60fps? I think a lot of people claiming that their device has no LAG simply cannot TELL what LAG even is and their eyes are untrained therefore wrongfully stating that their device is “smooth” all the time.
I do see lag in maps. No device is perfect, even my iphone 5 chugged sometimes.

Oh yea INSIDE of maps is fine idc about that im talking about when OPENING and CLOSING the map app.
There is pretty significant lag throughout the UI. The Nexus 4 w/ the same specs, minus Sense UI and the 1080p screen, is much smoother. The biggest issue for me in day to day use is scrolling left and right through GTalk sessions. It lags BAD. But that's the only thing that really bothers me at this point in my day to day use.
But the screen makes up for it.
Opening and closing apps is pretty darn smooth, especially once the apps are cached in the ram.
I dont notice any lag. But I use Nova Launcher prime and not Sense.
Very fast launcher.

Honestly I haven't seen this at all. Might be a device per device issue. I have no lag that I can tell. It's really smooth and responsive. Then again I've never used a Nexus 4 so maybe it's smoother. I still wouldn't use the word lag.
This topic would be again subjective just like "Hows the battery"
However, I have been an owner of these devices in past 3 months -
iPhone 5, iPad Mini, Xperia V, One X+, Galaxy S3, Note 2, Butterfly
A lag will almost always be present in all devices at some time or the other. However, I see where you are coming from. So to answer your question, NO, there is no lag.
I am using Virtuous ROM (even Stock ROM for the matter) with Power Saving On (for CPU) and the only times I have seen lag -
1. After reboot when you go one homescreen to another the widget needs to reload data atleast once.
2. When entering app tray after reboot or app install, it refreshes the app list.
In normal use and opening/closing apps, there is no lag and YES, I can differentiate between 30/60 fps. Example at hand, try scrolling contacts/tones in Whatsapp on a S3 and Butterfly/DNA

Thank you for this man really appreciate it, People on the nexus 10 forum was like NO NO LAG AT ALL!!! Lo and behold i bought it and about to return it after a week So you think the xperia z would be a pretty good bet for a lagless experience? Considering the hardware is similar.
Sense 4+ does have lag regardless what people say. It is there throughout phone UI. Be it settings, desktop or whatever.
However there is no unusual delay in opening or closing apps. And general performance is great in apps.
But if you are coming from Nexus 4, or Note 2, yeah this phone lacks that buttery smooth feel by default.
However with De-sensed Viper with LK kernel and Nova Launcher prime with fast animation = as close as it gets to Nexus 4 UI experience. It is significantly smoother to use. AOSP contacts is blazing fast as it should be.
Note 2 is buttery smooth ? ... Simple test ... Scroll a long list of items like ringtones on both Samsung phones and HTC side by side ... Let me know how it goes (actually don't since I have already played with them and know the answer)

You can take my opinion with a grain of salt if you want to, but I am probably in the top tier of ocd people when it comes to ui lag or slowness. I simply won't put up with it.
I owned the DNA and now the Note 2. Don't let anyone here fool you, the DNA is quite sluggish in homescreen scrolling. To the point that it was one of the main reasons that I got rid of the phone.
There isn't really a ton of lag, although there is a little bit. But HTC for some reason chose to slow down the animations so the scrolling feels heavy. I absolutely hated it.
My personal opinion and conclusion is that they did it to mask how heavy Sense is. Because I had a Rezound and the animations on that phone were much faster but it was a complete lag and stutter fest.
And I always laugh at the people who brush it under the rug and just say to run Nova and you will be fine. If you are going to do that, why not buy a phone with better battery life and expandable storage? Because Nova will make any current gen android device run like butter. I personally buy a phone for the stock launcher and software that it has.
Either way, good luck with your decision!
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda premium
For some reason unknown to me and I think many devs Samsung doesnt utilize hardware rendering to the fullest and ends up with jerkiness in all apps ... Htc does and its very much apparent when scrolling in even 3rd party apps ... I think in the end you need to play with both phones for few minutes to see the difference and make a decision

DNA vs iPhone 5

I'm sure this has been asked a million times but I'll add one more. Has anyone had the privilege of using both devices? Which would you choose and why? I understand this is the DNA forums and I have also asked on the iPhone forums around and have gotten mixed reviews everywhere. Opinions are nice if you don't mind sharing. Thanks ahead of time.
They both have their perks. I've always been an Android guy, but I don't hate on iOS like most others here. I have an iPad and I love it.
The iPhone 5 is a really solid device. It's simple, and some people like that. The battery life is definitely better. I feel like I spend half my time on my phone trying to find out what's keeping it from going into deep sleep, etc. Also, the menu button at the bottom of a lot of apps is really annoying (I have a ROM that lets me remap it, but I'm talking about stock devices here). I feel like that would be unacceptable on an iOS device. The messaging app is my last annoyance, as it redraws so damn much. I was watching my friend with the iPhone 5 in class the other day and her messaging app is fast as hell and never redraws.
That being said, I wouldn't trade my DNA for an iPhone 5. It has its quirks, but I love it. I love the big, beautiful screen (I think the size of the i5 is just really awkward). I love being able to customize my phone, and I love having more than just a static grid for home screens.
I just signed up with Verizon I've always been a android person held both phones in my hand iPhone 5 didn't like the size camera to me wasn't impressive and I just don't like the os much and the icons I know it could be jail broken but I'm so happy with the DNA beautiful phone

iPhone 5s to M8

Anyone else jumping ship? Very attached to my iPhone and it's extremely fluid simplicity.
I can't deal with the battery life anymore, drives me up a wall so I have been looking around.
I worry about the new camera technology featured here where as I am a proud father and rare urban explorer and enjoy snapping and editing in my downtime.
Any advice or suggestions?
I'm not new to Android in any sense, typically favor the Galaxy series and CM nighties for that Vanilla fix but I haven't been around lately to be in the loop with development.
Thanks guys. - Harry

I just got the M8...came from an iphone 5. Been using iphones since 3g. I got tired of itunes dictating everything I could do with my phone. I like the freedom of plugging my phone into any pc and adding pics...and music. That wasn't a luxury with the iphone. I also like the fact that you don't have to restore your phone whenever your storage space gets to low, because the mysterious "other" is taking up the extra space.
I also felt like the iphone's are being left behind. If you look at the 3g to the 5s...there isn't a whole lot of difference with the features they have. I will admit that it's going to take some getting used to the M8 coming from the iphone...mainly the touchscreen...I like the Samsung touchscreen a lot better. But I still feel good about my decision to switch phones.

Battery life was great until 7.1, things went down hill really fast after that.
I might be jumping ship, still deciding.
I jumped ship from iPhone 4 to the HTC One X back about a year and a half ago. Was an excellent decision for me. If you like tinkering and more freedom with customizing your phone AND you want a quality built device I think the M8 would be a great choice. I have had the HTC One (M7) and Galaxy s4 and HTC is superior.

I did own the S3 for a while then upgraded to the S4 and paid cash and was simply disappointed.I didn't feel it was a true upgrade and returned it within 24 hours. The Note 3 seems more appealing then the S5 at this point due to it's larger battery size but I read reports they last about just the same.

I think a lot of it is also personal preference. I know plenty of people who love Samsung TouchWiz and people that hate HTC sense. I just happen to dislike TouchWiz quite a bit and found that I enjoyed Sense especially after switching away from it. Likewise some people enjoy the simplicity of iOS. Ultimately just depends what kind of user you are. But I do think that the hardware is comparing apples to apples at this point. Just depends what you like! But I suggest taking the jump from iOS to android and trying it. I don't think I'll be getting an iPhone again any time soon!

I really like the m8. I was using a note 3 a good bit, but kept on falling back to the iPhone even though the two phones couldn't be any more different.
I liked the screen and great battery life on the samsung, but the device on a whole user experience level never hit that high note of polished software and polished hardware. Don't get me wrong, spec wise the note is great. But like apple has been saying for a long time, the marriage between hardware and software is really important and it matters to me. Samsung software works, but it's ugly to look at. Combine that with a plastic phone and there leaves a lot to be desired.
Which brings me to the m8, which to me, is really the only phone I have used that can be directly compared to and compete with the iPhone. I happen to like htc's sense because it is flat, consistent and useful without trying to simply pack in useless features. This combined with the design of the phone make it truly enjoyable to use. The things that raise the m8 above the latest iPhone for me are the screen quality and size, and the battery life. So far I have had battery life comparable to the note 3. My standard for assessing battery life are simple: if I need to, or want to use the phone heavily throughout the day - does it last? Or do I need to plug in at some point during the day? The note 3 and the m8 pass this test. I can use the phone as much as I want at work and after work and will only need to plug in at night. The iPhone can not do this. It needs to be plugged in during my commute to make it through the evening. To be fair, it does charge quickly and it is usually not an issue, but I would prefer to be completely untethered throughout the day because everyone knows there are days that take you away from chargers completely.
Anyway that's my long rant of why I like the m8 more than my beloved iPhone. If apple puts out a bigger screen around 5 inches and increases the battery life to match other flagship like the m8 and note 3, I might buy another iPhone. Until September or so when they do their next reveal, I'm set on the m8.

iMessage makes it really hard for me to get off the apple ecosystem. There's no way I could ever convince my buddies to use whatsapp or hangouts etc. I'm really loving this M8 though lol.
same here. I remember it taking a few days for my number to switch from IOS to android
I'm leaving the iPhone 5 for the M8. Had a couple droids before; the most recent being the galaxy 1. It left a bad taste in my mouth with it's toyish feel, and the back button that liked to activate all by itself. I switched from it to a 4s and really liked it for a while. Jailbroke both the 4s and the 5, but it still didn't really feel the same as a rooted droid. That and always having to wait for jailbreak to come out for various IOS versions.
Now I gotta get back up to speed on what all is involved in rooting this thing. Back on the galaxy it was super 1 click, clockwork, don't remember if there was anything else; been a while!
I came from so many androids from droid x to bionic galaxy s4 to htc one I switched to iPhone an not looking back yeah you can root android and customize them but development is old nothing really fresh same stuff with different tweaks ..not going back I seen the htc M8 hands on yes it's good but everyone has there opinions

I switched from a 4s to the One m7, and just upgraded to the m8. Best decision for me. As said before, even jailbroken, iOS just got boring to me. I tried a few ROMS on for size on the m7, before settling on the ViperONE, which added a bunch of new functionality to a Sense based ROM. Made the phone great in my opinion, and I eagerly await to see what the Viper Team comes up with for the m8.
If you like to tweak and play around with new ROMS, then android is where you want to be. If that is not a big deal for you then iOS will probably suit you well.

I still have my iPhone 5s, but I can tell you that every time I try to use it for any length of time, the small screen makes me want to ragequit life. The phone is nice overall and the camera is a benchmark for quality and speed, but I just can't stand using a phone screen that small anymore. It's literally my only real beef besides the lack of customizability.
I have an M8 now and I have 5 other Android phones and I can tell you that the M8 is a very nice device. The speed and fluidity are unparalleled and the camera is just as fast. I like all the camera features. It may not take pictures that look as good as the iPhone, but at least I can set a different SMS app as default or the look of my launcher, etc. I also actually like Blinkfeed. I use it to keep up with Twitter/Facebook, etc. Great overall device. It's too bad that it will be overshadowed by the GS5 when it launches.

Agreed I have an iPhone 5s and boot it up from time to time and I simply cannot use it for more then 5 minutes. The screen is so tiny I wondered how I used iPhone in the first place. It really feels like a toy. The only thing I could do with an iPhone is make calls due to screen size. No way you can use it for browsing, games or even typing it feels so cramped.
