In USA: Where to Pre-Order? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm in the USA on AT&T. Where should I pre-order from? I had a pre-order in with Negri Online - but they raised their price to $795 today -- I was okay with $660 (with a coupon) but an increase of over $100 -- when nobody else is close to that price is insane.
Suggestions?
I've looked at Clove, MobileCityOnline, and HandTec. Am I missing anyone? Anyone worth a few extra bucks?

im in the same boat as you. These prices are insane. If I cant get one for 650 or less I might just wait for att and get on contract.

I doubt you'll find it for less than $725...

You can get the i9000 on Amazon, so I don't see why you won't be score to get the SGS2 there at some point also.

Its a kick ass phone and I will have one eventually but besides hardcore SG2 fans theres no way that many are gonna sell at that price.
I could be wrong but its nuts.
Lets just say I sold my atrix for 400 I would still have to shell out over 300. wowee
I think its worth the price but its just too steep for me right now

Or you could wait until AT&T or T-Mobile launch it there.
Luckily I am in India during the Launch here and will pick it up here and hopefully not a stripped down version from there.

i'll like to pre-order for the Tmobile USA version

I have a galaxy s i9000 and I have unlimited data and tethering for $10 a month on AT&T.
I got my 8gb i9000 on ebay for $550 brand new. This was back in August of 2010. I'm sure you can find a GSII for $600 on ebay once they are released.

piggy backing on the USA thread, hope the OP does not mind
AT&T still has to release Samsung Infuse, there is no date even for that. They usually announce release dates 2 weeks in advance - is this correct? So Infuse is hitting the market closer to end of April or even later.
Then they would release SGS2 within 2 months or at the latest mid July, a year anniversary of SGS1? What sense does it make for AT&T to have two confusingly similar (to J6p) phones released so close to each other? Why would they infuse stock with the Infuse and make it difficult to captivate shelf space for the Captivate 2 a month or two later?
I am writing all this because I am suspecting Infuse would become SGS2, OR SGS2 will be pushed back to end of summer. Possible?

I've been thinking along similar lines. I really dont know what purpose the Infuse would serve for them if they also have the SGS2.

I've been wondering if the Infuse 4G is actually AT&T's version of the Galaxy S II. Why else would they be so coy about not letting anyone touch it or interact with it at CES...then keep it behind glass under lock and key at CTIA.
Having said that -- I don't want AT&T's gimped version of the GSII, unless the price is REALLY right!
</ConspiracyTheory>

If it is at&t's version of the sgs2 it needs to come with some upgrades to what it's listed as now (processor, gingerbread). I don't really care about NFC though.

It very well could be although I doubt they will deviate away from the 4.3 in Screen.
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i997_infuse_4g-3705.php
the Infuse is a single core A8 1.2 Ghz processor while we know that the SGS II will have a dual core. That is what the BIG-BANG from Samsung was all about... The screen and the processor.

The infuse to me seems just a likely indication that it will be a while before you see SGSII released on AT&T. Same situation with Verizon and the Droid Charge due out any day now. Even if they do not localize versions of the SGSII like they did with SGS (And God I hope they don't, those alterations largely were just annoying), release across carriers won't be simultaneous.
So does that mean we can guess what order they will hit based on recent releases or lack thereof? If using that logic, Sprint-->T-mobile--> Verizon/AT&T
Sad for me as I'm on Verizon and want to get a 4G phone before unlimited dies...it's not looking likely I'll be able to wait for SGSII

I meant that carrier-branded, delayed-update, feature-deprived, bloat-filled devices are not something I'd endorse.

US Release Date and Price?

Getting a new phone for my birthday, on the 27th. I either pick one now or wait for something else, which would be the Samsung Galaxy S2.
Now, if I pick something now, I have no idea what I would get, but I really wanna wait for the Galaxy S2. That being said, I can't get it if it's not coming out for like 6 months, but if it's only gonna be like 2 months, then that's okay.(For US that is...I would buy from UK but price are showing $650+)
As for the price, I don't have any upgrades available, but since it's my birthday, parents will pay for around $150. I start work tomorrow at Target(starting pay at $7.50 too!) and so I hope to save for that, but I don't know if I'll have enough if it's gonna be like $600.
So what do you guys think about the release date and price?
Everything is pointing to within two months
As for a US-Specific version? Who knows. ATT could drag their feet on their model.
The US models are typically cheaper than the international models though- the original SGS was the same way. International version/unlocked rates are $100-200 higher than the Captivate here in the US.

Well, considering it's a quad band device I'm hoping the US carriers don't demand changes.
My captivates screen just cracked(nasty fall) no insurance so i got att retention to give me an early upgrade and have the htc inspire for $75 with a 2 year. I will have another upgrade in april i plan on using for the SGS2 but who knows if it will be out by then. If it isnt then im selling my inspire useing my upgrade on a iphone and then reselling it and bam should have enough for the god of all phones the SGS2.
well thats my plan anyway

I wouldn't waste my time with feature-deprived, carrier-bloat, delayed-updates, contracts, or any of the headaches that come with the US cell carriers.
I will personally never buy a contract phone again. You lose all leverage against the carrier. For example, my family has reduced price cable and free movie channels because we threatened to switch providers.

Heres why i Think contracts give you more benefits and leverage.
they dont want you to cancel in contract or not they will still do the same to help you. ATT bloatwhere is the worst tho.
-Never get angry
-be kind to the rep(treat them how you would like to be treated)
-tell them you dont want to leave att but you dont really have a choice if you cant get your issue resolved.
-if the rep still doesnt budge tell them you want to cancel service. this will get you transfered to the save team a.k.a retention. Now these people have the power.
-once you have retention online chances are you will get what you want and more trust me.
I used to work for att. I know all the ins and outs. Retention department is key. ATT gives credits like nothing. when my captivate just broke I got them to give me my upgrade now instead of july waived upgrade fee(which is BS anyway) and $30 off my bill for the next 6 months (180) not to mention when i left them i had my friend/coworker put the best company discount on my account which happens to be coca cola. so I also recieve 28% off my primary line and I believe a smaller percentage off data planes. it saves me $50 plus every month off my bill. Just gotta know how to work the system. I dont know why they are so generous but i tried doing things like this on my fathers vzw account and they will not budge. I love ATT and wont part with them. I have another upgrade on another line come april this year which will be used for galaxy S2. much rather sign a 2 year and pay $200 over $800 for international version when im gonna just root it and put my own rom on there any way.
If anyone is having trouble with att. PM and I will give you some advice.
they did crack down on the company discount thing tho you do have to show proof i am grand fathered in tho.
ill be happy to help
Err, guys? Has anyone else noticed that Wikipedia lists April 1st as SGS II release date for the US?

I got my GF an Atrix on release day to replace her Nexus 1. She used it for a week and absolutely hated it (lots of problems) so we swapped it for an Inspire. So far she's fine with that.
We'll know more at CTIA but it may be pretty late in the year considering the previous Galaxy S US version was also announced at CTIA only to be released in July for T-Mobile.
I am guessing 1st week of May. usually 4 to 6 weeks behind Europe They will pay 830 so minus VAT 581 USD

For unlimited data? I was upset to here that att is buying T-Mobile because they are expensive but to be honest my data plan is half of my bill with T-Mobile. If it is unlimited is there a gigabyte cap?
Sent from my CM 7.1.0 KANG Vibrant
Not long ago I'd have said the G2X since it is (close to) stock Android. However, in light of it being unavailable currently and until we know if GB will fix the defects it has, I'd have to belay that recommendation in favor of another.
Tentatively, the HTC Sensation, which launches the 15th. HTC generally doesn't bomb on their phone releases, so it should be a sweet device.
If neither one of these, then do not upgrade. They are the only phones improved enough over the vibrant to be worth upgrading to. The G2, MyTouch 4G, etc, are all pretty much "sideways" upgrades and not worth it.
Definatly the nexus s or hercules
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
I'm wondering the same thing. My tweenage daughter's line is eligible for an upgrade on TMO in 4 days. She's held onto her feature phone responsibly, so I'm inclined to get her an Android, or steal her upgrade and give her my Vibrant. That would piss her off, but hey, I'm the phone geek and I pay the bill! Might piss off my wife too though... hmmm.
I can switch us to the Family unlimited talk & text plan with 2 GB of data for all 3 lines for $189 before my AAA discount, which should bring it to ~$160/mo. That's about the same as we're paying currently (or a bit less) for 1800 min, Fave 5, $25 Android data x 2, unlimited txt, family allowances. I could also go a bit cheaper, give her 200 min and 200 mb instead of unlimited min/2 GB and save $30/mo.
Has to be Android, preferably vanilla (or easily rooted with good ROMs, ideally CM7 support), definitely 4G. She might prefer a hard keyboard, I don't. She'd probably be thrilled with a MyTouch 4G, I'd prefer something nicer, dual core. Haven't been keeping up with hardware developments, what's out, what's coming... Thoughts?

[Q] Would you get the GS2 over the Infuse 4G for $100+ more?

I just picked up the Infuse 4G (AT&T branded) from Sam's Club for $108 after tax the other day. A great deal imho. I know the S2 is coming soon to AT&T and I'm not sure if the differences are worth the extra money. Clearly the factors that have me leaning to the S2 are the dual-core and the extra ram. From what I understand, Gingerbread and 1080p video recording support should be coming somewhere down the road via updates, but obviously the hardware is what it is.
If it was you and let's say in 2 weeks the S2 arrives, would you upgrade to the supposed $199 price for a more powerful, yet smaller phone? Personally, I love the size of my Infuse, not a single complaint.
If it were me, i would get the gs2. But then again my answer is biased.

The only confirmed date is for the Sprint version this Sunday, I think that is what he is talking about above you. The rumor for att was the 18th but I think that it wont pan out since we have nothing more than a sign up page yet. I also read one rumor that said sometime in October which is starting to sound more true. But then the leaked att roadmap that says q3 for it would be wrong as October is q4 right? I too am waiting for the att version before I weigh out the option for the att version or the i9100 international version.
Also I would choose (have chosen since i could of upgraded to the infuse as of aug. 29th already)the SGS2 over the infuse due to the things listed above, dual core compared to single core, 1080p recording, etc.

Any other responses? It seems to be an overwhelming 'Yes' so far but since I've updated my Infuse to Infused 2.1 and tweaked things a good bit, I'm now not so sure that the jump will be worth it. At the same cost, it's obvious. But now, I'm not seeing any reports that the dual-core and extra ram really make all that much difference...

[Q] Just got SG2... worth it to change to Skyrocket?

Hello, all...
I JUST upgraded from an Aria to an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II. THEN I find out that the next day, I could get a Skyrocket for the same price ($150). I asked the person at the store if the phone had 4g, and she said "yes". I didn't know then the difference between HSPA+ and LTE.
Also, I found out that AT&T is planning on upgrading the Skyrocket to ICS, but not the original S II. This really kind of hacks me off!
Anyway, I only got the phone a couple of days ago, but already I loaded a bunch of apps and spent a day setting it up the way I like it. Is it worth it to take it back to the store and swap it out for a Skyrocket? I live in the St. Louis, MO area, so I don't know when we'd be getting LTE.
dochood
If you don't have LTE, absolutely not. If you do have LTE, maybe.
I just bought a SGSII and live in NYC where they will roll out LTE. I'm not due to the change of hardware and dev support. Seems like this is the place to be.
One thing that has me leaning towards getting this is the beter radio. I believe 700Mhz for data.
The OG SGS2 WILL get ICS also FOR SURE. In fact MOST LIKELY we will have a port of it well before the lte SGS2 due to the i9100 being an unbranded phone and the unbranded phones get WAY MORE OS updates than ANY US phone ever gets.
But as far as getting OFFICIAL ICS I would BET that they both get them at the same timeframe or very close to it. And back to the similarities between the i9100 and i777 not near as much work to change/configure the OS would be needed for the i777 as compared to the needed changes for the i727 lte phone and T-Mobile SGS2 version.
We had the SAME thing with the ATT captivate, the i9000 is close to out i897 captivate but the i9000 got way more updates since it is an international version phone that is unbranded.
The same holds true for the i9100 being unbranded and will get more support for it (just look at how many gingerbread leaks they are already getting/ have gotten) The i777 has already gotten what TWO leaks of upgrades and since the i777 is closer to the i9100 almost exactly. We should benefit from them again.
The i727 lte skyrocket ONLY has a close affilitation with the T-Mobile SGS2 with the same hardware all just a added lte radio on the i727 skyrocket.
So in summary the international version SGS2 has sold at least 10 million phones AROUND THE WORLD and the i777 is almost the same exact phone. So support will always be there.
I expect the i727 sky rocket will end up having support for it also but unless 10 Million or so phones are sold between the ATT lte version and the T-Mobile version the support will be more of a one off type phone.
These are just my humble opinions and basing it on how I saw the ATT Captivate get better support since it was close to the i9000 and how ATT does take a LONG TIME to get out OS upgrades for their android phones. Just look at the captivate i897, it has had leaks of different gingerbreads for quite some time yet they STILL do not have an official gingerbread. So when they get gingerbread our SGS2's will already be ICS. That is just how ATT works.

this is true the one-off thing is HUGE in the dev community.........but there will be some dev support for this skyrocket. coming from the infuse a Dead Dev area after the sgs2 was dropped and VERY slow prior anyway.....so i can wait for a dev to get his hands on it. should happen sooner than later.
There is an international version of the Skyrocket.....
http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/26/samsung-announces-galaxy-s-ii-lte-and-galaxy-s-ii-hd-lte-handset/
so maybe they will get ICS around the same time as the OGS2.

I personally don't think it's as black and white as you make it appear to be. I think other things like unlimited data (grandfathered) and larger display can make some people feel the change is worth it. Also pricing since many people probably paid $199 for the OG GS2 whereas the SR can be had for $149 in some markets.
I think if you rely heavily on roms and dev support, the SR is not the better choice though... I do like these things myself, but I'm of the belief that we'll get some love eventually.

No, read what I quoted. He seems to indicate that unlimited data and larger screen are the benefits of the Skyrocket over OGS2.

Except International version of Skyrocket (Celox) has LTE radio tuned to a completely different frequency...

If that's how you read what I said, my apologies. I updated it to reflect what I meant. Basically those people that still have an unlimited data plan might see a benefit to upgrading since they can use LTE (when available) without the worry of hitting a 2GB data cap quickly. It was simply another thing to consider and one that I thought about which lead me to return my OG GS2 and get the SR.

this is true the one-off thing is HUGE in the dev community.........but there will be some dev support for this skyrocket. coming from the infuse a Dead Dev area after the sgs2 was dropped and VERY slow prior anyway.....so i can wait for a dev to get his hands on it. should happen sooner than later.

Compare that to the still lively Captivate dev community.
That's why I opted for the SGSII.

Difference is, the SGSII has sold probably 15-20million units worldwide (phones based off of the i9100). The LTE version, not even close.
So in the end, I just picked up my brand new SGSII from Bestbuy for $99 It was a tough choice but I prefer the sure bet.

I still don't get what you try to say. Are you saying with OG GS2, you can only use 2GB of data even with unlimited data plan? Or are you implying AT&T won't flag your for tethering if you hit 2GB on a LTE phone? If it is later, do you have any proof for that?

I'm simply implying that with an LTE device, you're much more likely to move through your allotted 2GB of data on a fixed plan compared to unlimited. It's not really a huge thing as I imagine the high % of users don't even use 2GB but with a faster connection, you're more likely to actually use it and therefore a higher or unlimited cap might be a benefit. That's all I'm saying.
So, after reading these posts, and considering the following points of my phone usage:
I use WiFi more than 3G/HSPA+
I got my phone for $150, price matched at an AT&T store with Sam's Club
I've already installed a bunch of apps and stuff on the phone
I hate spending time in AT&T stores
This i777 will probably have better community support, and I can probably get ICS sooner anyway
Who knows when St. Louis will get LTE
I think I'll just keep the phone I have.

But unlimited data plan is an inherited right for being old It has nothing to do with the phone of your choice. Less so for choosing one phone over another. I can burn as much data as on OS SGS2 as LTE SGS2 per month if I wanted. Until we see some benchmarks from reputable sources, we don't yet know what's the price to pay for that faster pipe of LTE. If Verizon's LTE phone can be an inidication, you basically burn through your battery juice much quicker than other phones so you get a dead battery early in the day instead of other phones sip through the entire day. In the end, you may use the exact same amount of data. You never know.
Not sure but..... When i am not in my LTE coverage area my download speeds are stilll way faster on my skyrocket than they were on my ogsg2. At the att store where there is no LTE my ogsg2 was get about 2.5 down and the salemans skyrocket was getting over 6 side by side. Might be worth looking into even in non LTE market

Yeah I'll add to this as well. I just hit 4.8Mbps this morning and the fastest I could ever reach on my OGSGS2 was 2.8. Probably a fluke but it did catch my eye.

Verizon Wireless galaxy S IV THOUGHTS.

Samsung isn't planning on releasing this phone on the big red until MAY30 WHICH is very close to June and isn't there going to be a couple phone in June around that same type with the new snapdragon 800 like that new moto phone coming out so I'm.curious wouldn't the new phone in June play the new gs4 obsolete ? Samsung gs4 release so late will make it its own demise ! why is Verizon releasing this phone so late i mean if there's a phone within the same month of the gs4 with twice the power then I won't consider the gs4 when I can wait just 2 weeks and buy somethin much more superior in hardware and stock android Samsung is about to lose a tons of money on Verizon if they wait all th way to may30 around the same month as sum very new phones with double the power .... Why didnt the gs4 release earlier ?? in may when moto announces there phone which will prob kill the gs4 in every way specs and software within 3week after the gs4 comes to store everyone will cancel there preorders and just wait and extra 3week to get the most powerful phone with a better screen n better snapdragon n prob more sensors and better battery and full stock android!

That doesn't make a lot of sense. People in the U.S. typically get new phones when they become eligible so there's a steady stream of people year round looking to buy new phones no matter when they are released. People buy what pleases them. The DNA tanked on VZW and there were no other phones released before it or after it that caused its failure. And it was powerful and had the world's first 1080P display. People are still buying SGS3's in large quantities and probably will after the SGS4's out because the price will be reduced. The SGS4 will be on the market as a "flagship" for 9-12 months and Samsung's planning on selling 10MM a month. HTC, Motorola, LG, and Sony all introduced phones that competed with the SGS3 and it certainly didn't affect Samsung's sales last year. So there's no reason to expect it to this year either. And the average consumer doesn't know (or care) what a Snapdragon, Exynos, or Octa is.
Plenty of hot new phones came out after the Galaxy S3's July release in the U.S. like the Razr Maxx HD, Nexus 4, etc. yet the GS3 outsold all of them by a huge margin. The average consumer doesn't buy phones based mainly on hardware specs.
Verizon is launching it on may 23rd, not may 30th. I went to Verizon yesterday and there was a Samsung rep there showing the employees the s4 and they said the official launch date is the 23rd. I know that's still three weeks later than the rest, but at least its a week earlier than may 30th. I gotta question, is verizons s4 going to be harder to unlock and root than the rest of them? I heard Verizon likes to lock them down, and I've never owned a smartphone I've been holding out for this one. I own a nexus 7 which is obviously the easiest to unlock and root. But i know the s4 is a huge release so I'm kinda assuming that there will be a solid method to root for Verizon. Am i right?
According to official PR from Samsung today, it will be on all major US carriers by the end of April. I'm guessing April 30th.
The Galaxy S 4 is optimized for powerful performance on the nation’s fastest networks and will be available on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless as well as U.S. Cellular, Cricket and C Spire starting during April. Additionally, consumers can find the Galaxy S 4 at Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile, Costco, Radio Shack, Sam’s Club, Staples, Target and Wal-Mart. Exact pricing and retail availability will be announced by each of the carriers and retailers in the coming weeks.

Available to carriers and carriers making the phone available to consumers are two different things.
And for the OP... i am not sure how new phones will make the s4 obsolete? a cpu does not a phone make....

But it says available on not to... I'm staying optimistic!
It also says "starting in april" that could mean that just one or a few carriers will roll it out in April.

I.D.K. why the O.P. is saying that the galaxy s4 would be obsolete soon i mean come on the motorla x phone right now is just a nice looking rumor plus a processor in a phone doesn't make all that difference because maybe you saw last year's htc one X+ it smoked the galaxy but the battery was really bad plus i hardly ever think android needs more power right now they need to be more battery friendly and better screen really what do you want more than 441ppi ?? anyway looking at all those gs4 specs and concediring what happened with last year's gs3 i can tell you that the galaxy won't go down till the gs5 is out so don't worry if verizon goes a few weeks later than everyone else it will still sell like hot cakes.
I still have unlimited internet after 4/21 can I buy new galaxy s4 cell using the new 12 month payment plan that's effective on 4/21 without upgrading to the 200sub? Does anyone know I think everyone who still has unlimited internet should ask Verizon this.. I wanna get the new s4 but keep my unlimited internet so will this 12month thing work for me?

I am going to tell you right now that Verizon's phones are the worst due to the spyware they bloat them up with. I hope they do as little to it as possible and there's no way verizon is going to pay for a S800 S4. They are cheap when it comes to there phones and replacing one that has gone bad is near impossible unless you take them to the FCC. If they ever touch my unlimited, I am gone with out a hint of doubt.

I actually find that replacing phones is very easy on verizon compared to sprint. I had sprint in the past and their customer service was atrocious. The Fascinate (Verizon Galaxy S) apparently had lots of problems, and they kept getting replaced until the Droid Charge came out, when Verizon just started giving out Charges to replace Fascinates.
The Charge had some problems too, and if you got enough bad ones from them, they even started handing out the Bionic, Rezound, and Razr too (phones that came out later with much higher specs). I even bricked my Charge and they just gave me a new one.

They had to post something. The basically are going to be releasing with the third world, lol. Its ALWAYS something with them. They did their best to wreck the galaxy nexus, they were in on the Carrier IQ scandal, they have to plaster their dated logo on everything, and they sell pretty much the most bloated phones in existence. Yes, they have a good network, but frankly, I live in DFW...all the carriers have good networks here. It's flat, populated and affluent.
I have an upgrade, but their delay conveniently puts me within a month of my contract ending. My wife gets a ~25% discount through work, but I can get 15% on T-Mobile, and with the massive price difference, it actually makes T-mobile a better deal. I may even pickup up a used N4, get the $30 walmart plan thing, and wait for the Note III.
I guess as someone that pays attention and is tired of getting screwed and treated like an idiot sheep, I am just not their target market.

I don't know exactly which options you're choosing, but if you do the math I suspect you'll find that T-Mobile isn't the better deal. I've been doing research recently for an upgrade myself, and I found that corporate discounts actually significantly narrow the gap between T-Mobile and Verizon. Reason is because with T-Mobile ditching subsidies but lowering the monthly bill, the value of a discount on that smaller monthly bill is proportionately less. If you factor in the fact that a full price GS4 on T-Mobile is $630 vs $200 for Verizon, Verizon might actually come out ahead over the course of 2 years.

If he used like 1GB a month sure it would cost less, but Verizon's network has really gone down the drain in the bigger citys. May as well have sprint 3G at times it get's so bad. Now if you live in bum ville sure Verzion win's. But he live's in the city so data speeds will be better on T-moblie.
Also no unlimited data any more with verizon and those like me that still have it get throttled.

If you're considering using an upgrade, that means you don't have unlimited, in which case my question is... why bother with VZ?

It's not throttled. When the network isn't congested (as you say, places like NYC during the day are crap) I still get great speeds.
