[Q] Would you get the GS2 over the Infuse 4G for $100+ more? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just picked up the Infuse 4G (AT&T branded) from Sam's Club for $108 after tax the other day. A great deal imho. I know the S2 is coming soon to AT&T and I'm not sure if the differences are worth the extra money. Clearly the factors that have me leaning to the S2 are the dual-core and the extra ram. From what I understand, Gingerbread and 1080p video recording support should be coming somewhere down the road via updates, but obviously the hardware is what it is.
If it was you and let's say in 2 weeks the S2 arrives, would you upgrade to the supposed $199 price for a more powerful, yet smaller phone? Personally, I love the size of my Infuse, not a single complaint.

If it were me, i would get the gs2. But then again my answer is biased.

Definitely sgs2 over the infuse. May be wait couple of Weeks after sgs2 is released to see if Amazon or someone else sell it for less?

Definitely yes. Using the Infuse and love it but S2 will drive me more crazy. can't wait for this Sunday.

Is this date confirmed anywhere? I have some friends that work for AT&T Direct but still haven't seen an actual date as of yet.

The only confirmed date is for the Sprint version this Sunday, I think that is what he is talking about above you. The rumor for att was the 18th but I think that it wont pan out since we have nothing more than a sign up page yet. I also read one rumor that said sometime in October which is starting to sound more true. But then the leaked att roadmap that says q3 for it would be wrong as October is q4 right? I too am waiting for the att version before I weigh out the option for the att version or the i9100 international version.
Also I would choose (have chosen since i could of upgraded to the infuse as of aug. 29th already)the SGS2 over the infuse due to the things listed above, dual core compared to single core, 1080p recording, etc.

Any other responses? It seems to be an overwhelming 'Yes' so far but since I've updated my Infuse to Infused 2.1 and tweaked things a good bit, I'm now not so sure that the jump will be worth it. At the same cost, it's obvious. But now, I'm not seeing any reports that the dual-core and extra ram really make all that much difference...

In USA: Where to Pre-Order?

I'm in the USA on AT&T. Where should I pre-order from? I had a pre-order in with Negri Online - but they raised their price to $795 today -- I was okay with $660 (with a coupon) but an increase of over $100 -- when nobody else is close to that price is insane.
Suggestions?
I've looked at Clove, MobileCityOnline, and HandTec. Am I missing anyone? Anyone worth a few extra bucks?
im in the same boat as you. These prices are insane. If I cant get one for 650 or less I might just wait for att and get on contract.
I doubt you'll find it for less than $725...
You can get the i9000 on Amazon, so I don't see why you won't be score to get the SGS2 there at some point also.

Its a kick ass phone and I will have one eventually but besides hardcore SG2 fans theres no way that many are gonna sell at that price.
I could be wrong but its nuts.
Lets just say I sold my atrix for 400 I would still have to shell out over 300. wowee
I think its worth the price but its just too steep for me right now
Or you could wait until AT&T or T-Mobile launch it there.
Luckily I am in India during the Launch here and will pick it up here and hopefully not a stripped down version from there.
i'll like to pre-order for the Tmobile USA version

I have a galaxy s i9000 and I have unlimited data and tethering for $10 a month on AT&T.
I got my 8gb i9000 on ebay for $550 brand new. This was back in August of 2010. I'm sure you can find a GSII for $600 on ebay once they are released.
piggy backing on the USA thread, hope the OP does not mind
AT&T still has to release Samsung Infuse, there is no date even for that. They usually announce release dates 2 weeks in advance - is this correct? So Infuse is hitting the market closer to end of April or even later.
Then they would release SGS2 within 2 months or at the latest mid July, a year anniversary of SGS1? What sense does it make for AT&T to have two confusingly similar (to J6p) phones released so close to each other? Why would they infuse stock with the Infuse and make it difficult to captivate shelf space for the Captivate 2 a month or two later?
I am writing all this because I am suspecting Infuse would become SGS2, OR SGS2 will be pushed back to end of summer. Possible?

I've been thinking along similar lines. I really dont know what purpose the Infuse would serve for them if they also have the SGS2.
I've been wondering if the Infuse 4G is actually AT&T's version of the Galaxy S II. Why else would they be so coy about not letting anyone touch it or interact with it at CES...then keep it behind glass under lock and key at CTIA.
Having said that -- I don't want AT&T's gimped version of the GSII, unless the price is REALLY right!
</ConspiracyTheory>
If it is at&t's version of the sgs2 it needs to come with some upgrades to what it's listed as now (processor, gingerbread). I don't really care about NFC though.

It very well could be although I doubt they will deviate away from the 4.3 in Screen.
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i997_infuse_4g-3705.php
the Infuse is a single core A8 1.2 Ghz processor while we know that the SGS II will have a dual core. That is what the BIG-BANG from Samsung was all about... The screen and the processor.
The infuse to me seems just a likely indication that it will be a while before you see SGSII released on AT&T. Same situation with Verizon and the Droid Charge due out any day now. Even if they do not localize versions of the SGSII like they did with SGS (And God I hope they don't, those alterations largely were just annoying), release across carriers won't be simultaneous.
So does that mean we can guess what order they will hit based on recent releases or lack thereof? If using that logic, Sprint-->T-mobile--> Verizon/AT&T
Sad for me as I'm on Verizon and want to get a 4G phone before unlimited dies...it's not looking likely I'll be able to wait for SGSII

Thanks. I kinda found myself drifting away from the idea of waiting for one of these. What could bring me back is if they bumped up some of the specs: I honestly think that Samsung should not even bother launching the SGS2 this late in the game unless it came with the processor(s) clocked @ 1.5GHz (at least), LTE, NFC, and perhaps some higher dpi screen. It's just too late for anything less. iPhone5 is just 'round the corner, and Saint Steve's gonna make sure that anything less than that is obsolete.
Edit: okay, I guess I could live w/o LTE for now, as it may be too early to put LTE in a phone with a slim profile, and reasonable battery life.

There was a thread here where one of the devs unpacked the 2.3.4 leaked rom from samsung. There were logos with ATTs LTE on there. This led us to believe ATT might be launching it as the flagship device for its LTE network. I didn't read the whole thread, but that's what I got from it. So LTE is a possibility.
As for when it launches... Sprint has a rumored July 24th release. But we haven't heard anything yet, so I think thats too soon.
I think August or September for sure will be more likely.
I agree with its taking them too long. The next nexus phone will be close to release by the time they release the SGS2 here.

Seriously? What Android phones are currently at the SGS2's specs better yet surpassing them? The Photon and Bionic are comparable in spec but I bet they benchmark no better. The only phone discussed that could best it is the HTC Holiday but that's at least six months away. I agree with the LTE comment. To release the SGS2 as a 3G or Fake-4G phone would be a stupid move. Spint's is going to be WiMax and we now know AT&T's is LTE so the only hold-out is VZW. T-Mobile's getting the Hercules which is an Infuse with a TI dual-core SoC.

Choosing between this and the Skyrocket

Hello. I have signed a two year contract with AT&T (4gb data yaaay...) and got the HTC Titan since im a WP7 lover, but after a week im not sure i can justify a long term agreement on the platform so im gonna use my 30 day windows to swap it. Since i know ill get bored of iOS its out, so its between the GS2 or the Skyrocket since the Vivid is somewhat laggier and locked bootloader. Im leaning towards this due to the Exynos vs Snapdragon debacle....
Question, Is it worth a contract nowadays or is there a better choice? I wished the Galaxy Nexus arrived before my 30 days was up but its not happening. Please share thoughtz

If you're in a LTE area and don't mind having a higher battery drain due to 4g then go with the Skyrocket. Of the two I think that the GS2 is the better choice but then again I couldn't take advantage of the 4g where I am so the skyrocket would be pointless.
Wow I'm sick of seeing these threads.
Only you can decide what is going to be best for you. If you're in LTE and use the phone for surfing, ect, get the ****rocket. If you play games or watch movies, sgs2 is the way to go.
Do a search and you'll see all the pro/con thread already out there.
Best bet is to go into a store and play with both phones. If you still cant decide after that, then specwise the GS2 is a better phone than the Skyrocket... so let that be the thing to tip the scales.

It is not entirely false. In my area (Northern California), the AT&T corporate stores and authorized dealers no longer carry the original S2, only the Skyrocket. I got mine from a local RadioShack. I guess it is because they are nationwide retailer and have their own stock. The only way to get the S2 from AT&T directly in my area is to buy from their online store.

I got my GS2 on monday (I ordered online) I right away noticed a dead pixel. I went into my local ATT store and they didnt have any GS2s in stock. They checked 3 or 4 other stores in the area and none of them had them in stock. The manager told me that they were no longer keeping them in stock because they are now pushing the skyrocket. She told me she thinks they were even asked to send the GS2s back.. So while the phone may not be at end of life ATT has decided to "forget" about the GS2 and push the skyrocket since they are pushing their new LTE network
Just my thoughts/experience on the subject
Sorry for posting another thread on this, I was reading the other topic posted here....
but since the thread was bumped again, let me ask. Does the SGS2 have more dev support than the SR? My main concern is being left behind too soon, and since the GS2 is closest to the OG, i think id get custom and official ICS before SR imo. plus i cant get over the crappy Snapdragon cpu it uses as well since im anal about those things and thats why i basically swore off htc androids because of it.
here is the kicker... i DO live in a LTE area haha, desicions, decisions...

I live in an LTE area (They just launched in NYC) and I chose the GS2 over the skyrocket for a few reasons
1. I had the bigger sprint GS2 and I actually prefer the 4.3 form factor
2. The CPU/GPU is better in the GS2
3. LTE is new and this is their first generation device I'd rather wait until it matures more (in handsets and network) than to jump on it now.
4. There is a lot more dev support for the GS2 and since it's so close to the International version it means we pretty much get whatever they get (just a tad bit after)
Now I did say I preferred the 4.3 form factor and I do, but after using the 4.52 sprint GS2 I kind of got use to it and the 4.3 felt tiny (even though it's really not THAT much smaller) so it took a little adjusting.
I was in the ATT store the other day when I was trying to exchange my GS2 with the dead pixel. I played with a SR and I can say you can definitely see a difference in snappiness when they are side by side. The Gs2 just seems more smooth and fluid. If I didn't have them side by side I prob wouldnt have noticed a difference but you most certainly notice a difference when they are side by side.
In the end for me the reasons to go with the GS2 outnumbered the reasons to go with the SR which the only reason I could think of is that it's LTE

Well, I DID physically go into two local ATT stores this past week, and neither had any s2s nor any accessories for it, in addition to being told by the employee that they were obsolete in their system. Yes, you can get them online through att, but not at the stores around here. Lte has not been launched in my market yet (SF bay area) but there are pockets of cells in testing, so it will be coming at some point.

Anyone gonna upgrade to a skyrocket II HD?

Just saw this today...

I think I may make the switch if it is half as good as I hope. Hopefully they learned from their flaws with the skyrocket.
Nope. I'm staying put with the sgsII!

Just curious as to what makes you say that? No interest in the LTE, bigger screen or new form factor?
Depends on what the Processor is and what OS version it will come with.
i'm actually quite interested in the new skyrocket HD.
However, since there's SGS2 and skyrocket on the market for AT&T already, i doubt that many developers would make the jump and support skyrocket HD.
so i'm just gonna stick with my i777 because i love the developers here

That too is a huge fear I have and is really my only major drawback to the device.
Now that Orlando will have LTE this is very tempting, but then again I am having way too much fun with the SGS2 to even think about replacing it.
Maybe if they announce it will have the dual core 1.5ghz exynos processors I'll give it another thought.
Samsung is going overboard. They should have released one galaxy s2 with their lte exynos and have a super amoled plus HD, THAT'S innovation, this is BS and gives Android a bad name for fragmentation

Isn't the GSIII also set to release this spring/summer as well lol?
If it's Crapdragon - hell no.
If it's Exynos - tempting, but I've already purchased one out-of-cycle upgrade, don't need the extra 300 MHz, and LTE will be worthless for at least 2-3 more years here.

2-3 years? How do you figure that?
I get an upgrade once a year with at&t, I got the gs2 the day it came out....so i still have about 7months left untill I can get my upgrade, by that time something bigger and better will be around....if not, i will for sure look into this phone.
im really thinking about it... the screen res was my only complaint with the s2 and now i see hope in the future!!!!
oh and i live in a LTE area
I used my wife's upgrade to get the S2 and i am available for a upgrade next month... i might sell my iphone 4 and S2 and take the upgrade... ill have to play with one first. My wife loves her phone so im set
as far as I know, the Exynos doesnt support LTE yet.
unless that has changed in the last couple months?
I'm sticking with mine. I live in a city that probably won't get LTE for another year or more. By that time, something else will be out and I can get an upgrade then.
I love my GS2 and battery life has been fantastic. Although I'd like a higher resolution screen, it's not enough to make me want to switch to the Skyrocket HD.
i live about 15 minutes north of NYC and LTE stops there so I'm just outside the LTE area. I wont be worrying about LTE devices anytime soon lol
At this point I will just wait for the SGSIII

Technically, the Vivid already has ICS. I would hate to think that AT&T is holding up the ICS update for the Note (and the GS2 and Skyrocket for that matter) to appease HTC, since AT&T and HTC are like "bros"...
No doubt bring on the ics.

this timeline would also play nicely with the rumor of a new ICS leak. Perhaps we can look forward to a leak of the final ICS.
Dont trust the reps
Trust me. No AT&T rep inside a store has any information on when phone updates are coming out. ;-)

I'm going with this.
Most of them barely even know about what they're trying to sell.

I agree. Those reps don't even know what devices they're getting. I *****ed after I got my infuse because I asked if anything new was coming out in the near future and they said no...a month later here comes the gs2 and the sky rocket not long after the gs2. They have no idea.

That just means Samsung makes more smartphones than anyone else. Samsung also has the highest percentage of smartphones on T-mobile and Sprint as well.
AT&T exclusivity deals with HTC go way back:
Tilt = Kaiser
Inspire = Desire HD
Titan(II) = same
One X = same
Not to mention, HTC was the first to have a 4G(HSPA+) device and one of the first to have a 4G(LTE) device on AT&T. And in a couple weeks, they will have the only 2 devices running ICS (except for the Nexus S which AT&T doesn't carry or market*).
*EDIT: It seems the AT&T version still has not received it's ICS update though it can be done manually
I'm not saying AT&T and Samsung don't have a good business relationship, obviously they do, but I feel AT&T panders to HTC much more. So far, AT&T has only been able to land the Note as an exclusive deal, but maybe there will be more, who knows.
(Niche devices aside, which by the way, some could argue that the Note is a niche device)
Anyway, back to the topic, I feel the ICS update for the GNote will probably not come around until late summer. Samsung only committed to Q2 for the International versions. I think everyone can agree that US carriers usually drag their feet on updates so they can play the "marketing" game.
Gizmodo confirms
Samsung has published a list detailing which carrier variants of its phones and tablets will be blessed with Android Ice Cream Sandwich. While Sprint's Nexus S 4G is already enjoying the latest Android OS, the update will also arrive on the Now Network's Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. From Verizon, both the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 7.7 will get the upgrade, accompanied by the WiFi variants of the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and the Galaxy Tab 8.9.
On AT&T, ICS is confirmed for its Galaxy S II, the Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Galaxy Note, Captivate Glide, Nexus S and Galaxy Tab 8.9. T-Mobile customers, however, lack a similarly breathless list of upgradable hardware, instead Samsung says it will aim to upgrade "eligible devices" in the coming months and will "provide updates as we have additional details to share." Which all sounds like those updates aren't coming to Big Magenta any time soon. Samsung vows to update the list with more details as they arrive, which is available at the source below.

Not really confirmation of a release date, just confirmation of the devices. However things are looking good for a release date "soon"

The Skyrocket is essentially a GS2 device with LTE and a bigger screen. T-mobile and Sprint pretty much already had the same thing. And to be honest, the Infuse and OG GS2 (AT&T variant) were just "marketing" stepping stones to stay in the game and should have probably never been released. How many people suffered "buyer's remorse" because of those two devices? Answer: Plenty.
The Glide and Rugby Smart (and Double Time) are niche devices. I'm talking about flagship devices, like the Tilt was and the Inspire could have been if released sooner. The Titan(II) and One X are flagship devices that AT&T has managed to get exclusivity deals (even if for a short time).
And let's not bring in other countries/carriers like Bell or Rogers because AT&T is in the US market and that's what I'm speaking of, US carriers.
And let's not forget the Samsung Focus(S), which were essentially flagship devices for WP from Samsung and AT&T hardly did any marketing for either one even though they were superior to the likes of the HTC Surround, which AT&T did a ton of marketing for.
I bought the phone at the beginning of this month at Best Buy. The salesman told me that the phone would have the ICS upgrade in Q2 and said that you could go to the Samsung website and find that info. (I realize the annoucement on Sammies site was for the Euro version) If they push that date back is that grounds for a return/exchange (because it is being used as a selling point)? I doubt that I would, but if they are on the hook for that then it may be more of an indication that the release will come out as promised. Companies are all about minimizing liability. Don't know if it helps but it's something to consider.
Highly unlikely, sales people can pretty much say anything they want. You would probably have to have them put it into writing within the contract before signing it. Even then I'm sure there's some disclaimer that relieves them of any responsibility in that case.
Unless the public can somehow manage to create a mass exodus of customers from one carrier there will be no changes in the way they do business. All we can really do to avoid disappointment is when purchasing a phone, ask yourself, "Can I use this phone as is for my entire contract?" without any expectation of updates. Or, find a phone that already has a good development community behind it.

I just read on Engadget that Samsung has finally heard about ICS and after months of deliberation finally decided to tell people that, yes indeed Samsung has heard about it, and that some day in the (perhaps distant) future they will give a timetable as to when they will think about it some more: subject to further change (of course).
This is all very encouraging. When (or if) they do release it, I can always get the Note back from the museum I donated it to (assuming of course the world still exists.
ANYONE that believes something an in store rep is telling them, in regard to updates, is just a store rep trying to sell you something. The only time I believe
that an update is coming, is when I see others getting it or my phone say "update available".
I don't believe carriers or manufacturers about updates anymore. I had a Nexus S on AT&T, which I bought because of the promise of being among the first to get the latest updates, straight from Google. It finally just got an ICS update very recently, months after ICS came out. Very disappointing. Now I'm making my phone decisions based on how much is available from the development community.
