Just had a quick question about the operating temperature of my atrix.
My previous phone was a captivate, which NEVER felt hot to the touch unless I ran the GPS for awhile.
It was the same for my Atrix until I ran a graphics intensive game for about an hour or so. It started to get hot while playing, so I stopped for awhile. Ever since then, it is almost always warm to the touch and is continuously operating at 50C+.
So, is this normal? What are everyone's operating temperatures?
Miine runs warm under higher stress. It is a dual core processor so heat will be higher then other phones

this result was after taking quite a few pictures with camera360 i noticed the bottom of the phone VERY hot.
these are about the temps that i get. it especially heats up when using data connection for web and not wifi. with wifi, it peaks at about 50c and on data connection it can go up to 57c.

yeah, i just use wifi and thats what gets it hot. and apps like camera >_<

Strange how people have dif experiences. My Captivate was always hot always! It only runs slightly cooler now with one of the latest CM7 nightly.
My Atrix gets warm sometimes but I never have the extreme heat other users report. I dont use and task killers, only watchdog to monitor for runaway apps. I do use a Commuter on both.
My phone only saw the 50's when I left it charging under a pillow.When to ATT store and got it replaced.Replacement phone runs all day at 35C never seen it go past that.
And do use a commuter case aswell.

Hmmm. My tempstature is 50°C at idle, while connected to WiFi. Is that bad?
EDIT: Well no, it goes back down to about 38° when you leave it for a while. But 50° temps are quite common.
61° after a few games of Fruit Ninja. That seems like it shouldn't happen.

yepp even little games get mine hot. maybe it could be that we dont have software optimized for our hardware, that could effect it. who knows.

Its my understanding that the Atrix IS running a dual core optimized version of Android 2.2. Afaik our current version of Blur is NOT dual core optimized, but Im not 100% on that. Is Blur what you are referring to.? Also, apps have to be written to take advantage of both cores, so if the app wasn't specifically programmed to run on dual core it will run on just one.

I've started a thread early today because of this issue. Soon as I started playing games on my Atrix I got pretty scared with the temperature I felt on the exterior, and more scared after using temp. monitor apps.

The idea is to mod the phone to help dissipating heat. Besides undervolting with setcpu I guess there isnt much that can be done at software level to reduce the main chip's heat.
The ideas are still being formulated. I opened the thread so I could get some help and suggestion from other atrix owners, to have a good idea of what to do when I finally open my phone
could drill some tiny holes in the battery cover / just throwing that out there

Did a bunch of looking around and after a while found some white papers with the following temperature ranges:
General operating temps of -40C to +85C.
Practical usage will start to drop off below -20C and above +70C.
This tells me that our safe operating range should be limited to the practical usage temperatures. Anything outside of these and there is a good chance you will see performance drop off fast, and also may suffer hardware lockups, etc.
Personally I will stick to +65C which is the rule of thumb I go by with my PC's under full load.
<edit> <edit> I would also add that while our phones are not desktops/laptops/workstations, the CPU's can all handle around the same temperatures in all devices. Materials used and manufacturing techniques are almost identical. The solder used has a melting point of around 180C - 190C, so there is no fear of melting the solder. The main difference is that phones do not have active cooling, so you will see much larger jumps and swings in temperature. This being the reason you cannot OC in the extreme ways you can with PC's.
My rule of thumb is to keep my phone under 50c Max. The battey chewing alone is bad enough above 45c.
Ideally, I try to keep my phone below 40c whenever possible.
If it's a constant problem, then I usually try to find a different modem or fw. Which can make one heck of a difference...

Over the past month and a half that I have had an atrix I have noticed that my atrix has burnt me several times. I have it in my pocket and it just gets really hot. It doesnt seem to be the battery as the entire phone is very hot. This has been happening even before I rooted my phone. It burns me through the otter box. Im reluctant to take this back to at&t as i would have to unroot it. Are other people having this issue?
If its ridiculously hot, as it seems it is, thats not normal and you should return it ASAP. Also rooting would not affect heat output in any way.
One, wrong section.
Check a taskmanager when it starts running hot. Find out what is pulling so much processor load to create the heat.
I had this problem, took it back for replacement, then had the same problem on the new device. It turned out it was the Exchange sync causing the Motorola.services process to run constantly and kill the battery.
I solved it by changing the Exchange sync from push to every 15 minutes. I also do not use any sync with Google (mail, contacts, or calendar). My battery life is unbelievable now and the device stays cool 90% of the time.

Ha. Excessive heat. Buddy at least your phone doesn't have a aluminum battery door. Try touching that when your phone is being overclocked @ 1.5 ghz.
But essentially something that is syncing often is causing your phone to use the radio alot. And since its in your pocket there really isn't any airflow to cool it down hense the phone will generate heat.

Hi all!
I hope my post will help other people like myself that ware looking for information regarding this issue:
I installed TempMonitor and followed the teperateure of the device. There are 2 temperatures to measure: CPU and battery.
I will elaborate my findings:
1. CPU temp at rest without sync (push mail turned off) is 28-31C after a while (depends on the room temp).
In slight effort the CPU temp can get close to 50C but normaly is ~40-45C
It seems like the CPU temp is not that important and only when the CPU is running hot for ~10 minutes you feel the heat and it starts to get annoying. Notice that in this point a lot of battery juice is drawn.
2. Battery temp is also ~28C at rest. It gets up to 35C on ongoing effort. Since it is very large (1920mAh), you will feel the heat. I think that the battery is the main heat factor in the device and the CPU and graphic engine running in addition to the battery getting hot will cause the entire device to feel warm or even hot.
3. I noticed that at the beginning, one corner of the device (lower right) got REALLY hot and REALLY annoying at times. After 2 weeks, the heat spread became more bearable. I think it has something to do with the battery "setteling in".
4. Running apps that constantly check for updates and even push gmail, will cause your phone to run 1-2 degrees hotter and the more apps you add the hotter the phone will get at the resting state. Hence, when starting other apps it will get hotter and faster. even PowerControlPlus which is a very simple widget gets the deviec ~1 degree hotter on idle.
5. As the battery gets drained, it emits more heat. Try to charge your phones and not run battery draining apps when the battery is less than 30% or even 40% full.
I will comfort you all by telling you that I have a few friends with Galaxy S and Vibrants and their devices get hot too. A bit less on normal use like browsing but pretty much the same on 3D games and such.
I hope I helped because I was really frustrated by it for the first 2 weeks. I hope it will keep improving. I also purchased a case and hopefully it will help with the heat spreading around the phone - will update.
Please install Watchdog from the market to check if a process is acting crazy.
In my case it was 'Android media process' which ate 50% of all the processing power. There was not much of a performance drop since it occupied just one core.
Anyway Watchdog will give you an alert in case a process exceeds a certain percentage and from there you can google the problem or uninstall the app which is causing problems.
My Atrix 4G displayed a temperature of 37 degrees celsius. The highest till now I have seen. Could be higher though.
Its a dual core processor stop worrying about heat unless its hotter then 50c

When watching youtube I reach 42 degrees celcius in the battery and it literally burns my hand. Would maybe return it if I hadn't ordered it from Canada.

I'm having the same issue, but it's only coming from the bottom half of my atrix, and only since I installed a new LCD. I'm actually worried the heat will destroy my mem card and sim.
I've ordered a new LCD now, so hopefully that'll sort it out.
It's probably just apps constantly eating cpu. My problem is with the laptop dock though. The battery in it gets way too hot. It's the first piece of electronics I've had that actually made me reflex my hand away from the heat.

I get constant 60 degrees while using...
I am a heavy user may go for hours at a time...Gaming mainly...
While heavy gaming I get aroud 75 to 80 degrees.. I bloody burns my hand to a point i cant even hold it anymore...!

Most cpu's can go to 120 safely anything above that and I would be worried. I don't know if the cpu on a phone is the same though. I would say you are fine.
If you're talking about CPU, you should be fine. My CPU usually reads 104-110.
If your battery is that hot you're in trouble though.

I tested the Inc, Droid X, Droid X2, TB, Charge and Revolution. All had similar temps in range of 1 to 2 degrees.
At rest just playing Mp3s = 84
Same but while charging = 89
Downloading with 3G = 94
Playing Flash = 104 to 115
The key reason the DX2 seems hotter than other devices is the metal cover. It helps to dissipate heat, but at the expense of your hand. The other devices run just as warm, but are insulated due to the plastic housing. This is good for the hands, but less efficient heat dissipation.
The DX2 still does have some heat issues though, since it can spike high and stay there, unless you reboot the device. Seems that Flash can trigger this behavior- especially 10.3. Seems best to stay with 10.1 that shipped with the device (IMO).
Note: Playing the new Riptide game on the DX2 spikes to 120 degrees. My DX2 got so warm I decided not to buy the game and uninstalled the demo.
If the firmware issues are fixed on the DX2, I will buy another.
when I'm on the car dock, it will easily be over 120. And when I'm gaming I've seen it report (SetCPU) as much as 138.

I've seen the same issues. For me, it stops giving navigation directions and locks up when it's been running for more then ~15 minutes. Problem is, the temp outside hasn't been over 85f yet.
What the hells going to happen when it hits 105f in Norcal? I don't know if I can trust using the docking station under this condition.
This has honestly gotten to the point to where i'm quite worried about my device. I'm new to android, i was previously a palm loyalist. So I'm not entirely sure what's safe when it comes to my Droid X2's CPU.
With SetCPU i seem to always be running at 100 F and up (CPU temp). However the device doesn't feel very hot.
If it helps, I'm running Go SMS pro 24/7 and using ADW as my default launcher.
Edit: Forgot to mention, I'm supercharched and debloated with Flash uninstalled.

the first guy used "F" on his temp... everyone should please add C or F for temperatures... if they are in Fahrenheit then there is absolutely NO problem whatsoever. The phone "get hotter" due to the back plating being metal instead of plastic with other phones, which conducts heat better. 80-120F for any CPU is nothing to worry about and easily normal or cool operation. Now C on the other hand, that will definately be a problem. As mobiles are meant to consume less power and therefore run cooler, these temps are pretty solid in Fahrenheit, in Celsuis theres a massive difference and it then becomes a problem as PC motherboards trigger a shutdown if the CPU tops ~120C
I highly doubt everyone's phone would go to 120C...That would melt the phone.
120 c = 248 f
the phone would melt in half if that was the case......
Operating Temperature
The safe operating temperature for an ARM 11 Chips is -40c up to +85c. Within that range you should have nothing to worry about.
The battery, I do not know.

It was 112F in PHX yesterday. I had the phone by the pool in the sun, playing pandora via bluetooth to a speaker system. Android system info battery temp read 136F and the phone was doing fine but hot to the touch. Obviously, this isn't a good way to treat your device. Normally my phone will be in the low to mid 90s indoors running audio or surfing. I did forget the phone and left it running in a car dock once in Phoenix and it was in cool down mode when I returned to my car 45 minutes later. It didn't shut down and resumed to normal functioning after it cooled down.

my nexus one stock gets to 60C almost imediately when using google navigator.
i hear it's the CPU + 3G radio.
with 2G it's just slightly better, so i guess CPU is the main problem.
if the battery is charging it get's even worse. sun also doesn't help.
the only thing i can help is the CPU. what's the best option i have?
the tegra 2 safe operating temperature tops off at around 158°F , so 100 is perfectly safe, I wouldn't worry until you start staying above 140-145 for extended times, even when mine has gotten that high I was able to cool it quickly by taking the battery cover off and/or stepping outside in the cold air or holding it in front of an, air conditioner for a minute or two
but I only had it get that high when pulling huge amounts of data over 3g with a not so good signal, which means most of the temperature increase was due to transfer from the 3g radio getting hot as hell, I think they put the radio and CPU chip to close to each other, but once you stop pulling data or kill data connection or switch to wifi you most likely will see a drop in temp
100 is nothing to worry about

I've read on a few forums people just chalk it up the the dual core processor, but mine gets warm even if I'm doing something as simple as just reading Fox News. I don't know how that could be taxing the processor that much. I don't have much else running in memory which could be using a ton a resources.
Mine doesn't get hot, just pretty warm. I guess I am just suprised cause it's the only phone I've ever had that gets warm like that.
I tried our display model at work and it gets really warm also, so I guess exchanging my phone for another would probably amount to ending up with a new phone that does the same thing.
I was just wondering if it is common with everyone.

Yeah, mines gets warm too. Maybe try downloading SetCPU and limiting the processor's speed if you can't handle the heat

How hot is too hot? With fauxs newest kernel mine gets up to 70c
OCd at 1.3 on idle is at 51 celcius. I think its acceptable

I dropped back to the .7 kernel. My processor was getting way too hot at even 1.2 when under load. 70C+ is not good for any processor. Back to 1.1 for me.

What OC you have shouldn't matter, as your phone doesn't run at maximum frequency with maximum voltage unless you are actively using it!
But to answer the OP's question, my phone gets pretty warm too. I just read the temperature after watching a 5 minute HD video, and it was at 67C. If you are using the cellular radio i'd imagine it can get even warmer.
That means the dualcore is doing its job
Using setcpu and CPU stress testing & quadrant benchmarking for almost 2 hours straight one day, mine never exceeded 60C.
I think the 1.3OC(v1.9) kernel is wonderful, I've hit 4.9k scores on quadrant standard. It seems to be more friendly with the combination of setcpu & CM7 also, the later kernels kind of crippled my setcpu profiles and would cause my launcher to FC(I suspect?)
Phone idles at 34C.. probably lower because screen off my max freq is 216mhz(AMAZING BATTERY LIFE) in fact, i usually keep my proc throttled down to about 400mhz and don't crank it up until i need it(again. AMAZING BATTERY LIFE)
honestly... at 400mhz the phone still quite snappy.

mine runs at about 30c most of the time.
however i did notice a strange issue that the phone gets alot hotter after you charge it and then unplug the charger, a reboot usually fixes this. i make it a habit of rebooting immediately after unplugging the charger and my phone stays most of the day between 30-33c
this also helps the battery life a lot, i can usually get by the end of the day with 60 to 80 percent left.

Mine average on 58C to max at 62C.. Idles at 41C.. It's warm! I got used to it.
Has anyone considered the longevity of the phone and battery from the unit staying warm all the time?
Mine is pretty much warm the whole time it is in my hand when being used. Outside in the sun taking pictures even more so.
I don't think I have any runaway processes. After I restart the phone, I use a task killer to kill everything it boots up with initially. Everything which is needed, like about 4 things come right back up, so I excluded them. But I don't use to to autokill stuff. It's just when I boot up I noticed there are like 30 things started up for no reason being as I just turned off the phone.
I figured I know which ones need to be up cause they come right back up after being killed. But things like Google+, Maps, Gallery...etc...which I don't think need to be running at bootup I kill.
+1 on going back to 1.1... OC'd at 1.3 was killing battery and heating up like crazy! OC'd to 1.1 have no problem with UV, heat, and get 30+ hours battery life with moderate use.
It's not just the CPU/GPU usage what's heating up the Atrix...
That specific area of the Atrix contains CPU/GPU and also the GSM/3G/Wifi and Bluetooth radio chip, which can get really hot while broadcasting voice/data. Even if the radio is idle, if you are on a bad reception area it will be constantly searching for coverage and switching from 3G/4G to 2G, which creates heat and battery drain.

On a more serious note, mine gets warm if im playing games.

Hi guys
I just bought my Z3TC this week. Overall I'm super happy to have it. However, I notice each time, after playing around with it for 15 ~20 minutes (Surfing, photo taking, gaming), the tablet gets really hot near the home button area.
I installed a temperature app and found that the CPU was at 66'C consistently and the Battery was at 45'C. It was hot to the touch, not to the point where I can't use the tablet, but when my palm rests near the home button area, the heat is noticeable. It's not just warm. The app (CPU temperature) didn't show any throttling of the CPU either.
I'm worried that the heat will cause damage to the tablet's battery and CPU lifespan.
Does anyone else have similar issues?

What games are you playing ? I haven't noticed any elevated temperatures in my device but then again I don't typically game.

It was MMX racing.. just a simple 3d based game.
But I notice, the heat generated isn't just from gaming. It seems it's happening when I'm using any apps. Is it possible to throttle the CPU? Or do I have a defective version?

From my understanding CPU throttling it controlled by the kernel and would therefore require root access.
Out of interest I downloaded and played dead trigger 2 after reading your post. My device certainly got warmer but it wasn't hot to touch. With the polymer backing I would be concerned of warping if you have excessive over heating, similar to the issues with the Galaxy Tab S.
If I can get some time I will monitor my temps over the next day or two and see what happens.

I've never heard anyone say the tablet heats up. I, myself, play games on the Z3 tablet compact, 3D / 2D / whatever D, sometimes even while downloading, the thing doesn't even know how to heat up, it's always like "nope bro, no heating up from me, u want heating up? Go get something with the Tegra K1 inside". Jokes aside, the thing seriously never heats up. Possibly a defective unit? I suppose you could ask the service center to take a look.

I played around with battery settings, installed apps, uninstalled apps.. Going to get it exchanged tomorrow...

Hi guys, this is something that keeps me up at night. The recent software update was supposed to make performance of the Moto Z better, and in actual daily usage I find nothing to complain about, but when it comes to benchmarks it's a whole different story, I have the uk version by the way. To be frank, I used to get about 129 000 in antutu, which is pretty low to start with, and now it's down to 126 000, geekbench is lower than you would expect from this phone too, at about 1350 single core and 3810 multicore. So basically I started this thread as a place where we could share our benchmark results and discuss them, because I have a feeling I just got an unlucky unit, because it also gets real hot real fast (up to 60 degrees celcium), and I can't make it last for more that 4 hours of screen on time, and I'm really not a heavy user. I just feel strange about this phone, because I love everything else about it, and it’s good that I do, because resale value on these things is beyond awful, tried to sell it for 500 bucks for months with no success.
Benchmarks mean abso-farking-lutly nothing. If they are keeping you up any night, you have a mental issue. I suggest you see a shrink.

Well, there is no reason to be so toxic my friend, my main concern is that I may be the only one here with such a low score, and since the score got even lower after some time that could mean I may have a defective device, and that would be a real problem to keep me up at night.
I don't think there's a problem with your unit, 4 hours screen on time sounds normal without the battery mod on. That drop in benchmark score isn't very significant unless it continues to drop dramatically. I have the UK model too, and it is underclocked by default to 1.8GHz. You could try the Turbo Z kernel to improve it
Also mine gets really hot fast when using Daydream VR or anything intensive but 60 °C isn't dangerous for the SD820. (You could check battery use in settings incase something is keeping your phone awake.)

The only benchmark that matters is the one between your ears. And according to you, it passed.

Thank you for your comforting and friendly reply, in battery settings Android OS, Android system, and phone idle are on top when I'm not using the phone actively, I've had laughable results sometimes, like yesterday I had 30 percent battery left with only about an hour of screen on time, again no gaming involved, but this usually happens when I'm moving around, if I stay at home and nothing happens to the phone it usually won't drain battery like that. I think the reason the phone gets hot easily is obviously because of how thin it is, for example, when I keep it in the pocket it's just as hot as my body tempreture, since it just absorbs heat that easily, but has a hard time getting rid of it.

You're welcome. If you click on the graph you can see the awake time too, lately something has been keeping mine awake and draining the battery too. Not sure what it is yet, but if yours is getting really bad screen on time it could be similar. Likely an app running in the background keeping the phone awake which would heat it up more and drain the battery. There are wake lock detection apps that claim to be able to tell you which is causing this.
As you can see it's awake for long periods of time when the screen is off, and it really shouldn't be. Hope this helps :good:
