I was just curious if everyone's Atrix gets warm in the lower part of of the phone?
I've read on a few forums people just chalk it up the the dual core processor, but mine gets warm even if I'm doing something as simple as just reading Fox News. I don't know how that could be taxing the processor that much. I don't have much else running in memory which could be using a ton a resources.
Mine doesn't get hot, just pretty warm. I guess I am just suprised cause it's the only phone I've ever had that gets warm like that.
I tried our display model at work and it gets really warm also, so I guess exchanging my phone for another would probably amount to ending up with a new phone that does the same thing.
I was just wondering if it is common with everyone.

Yeah, mines gets warm too. Maybe try downloading SetCPU and limiting the processor's speed if you can't handle the heat
Anyways, its to be expected especially while running games or watching movies.
How hot is too hot? With fauxs newest kernel mine gets up to 70c
OCd at 1.3 on idle is at 51 celcius. I think its acceptable

I dropped back to the .7 kernel. My processor was getting way too hot at even 1.2 when under load. 70C+ is not good for any processor. Back to 1.1 for me.

What OC you have shouldn't matter, as your phone doesn't run at maximum frequency with maximum voltage unless you are actively using it!
But to answer the OP's question, my phone gets pretty warm too. I just read the temperature after watching a 5 minute HD video, and it was at 67C. If you are using the cellular radio i'd imagine it can get even warmer.
That means the dualcore is doing its job
Using setcpu and CPU stress testing & quadrant benchmarking for almost 2 hours straight one day, mine never exceeded 60C.
I think the 1.3OC(v1.9) kernel is wonderful, I've hit 4.9k scores on quadrant standard. It seems to be more friendly with the combination of setcpu & CM7 also, the later kernels kind of crippled my setcpu profiles and would cause my launcher to FC(I suspect?)
Phone idles at 34C.. probably lower because screen off my max freq is 216mhz(AMAZING BATTERY LIFE) in fact, i usually keep my proc throttled down to about 400mhz and don't crank it up until i need it(again. AMAZING BATTERY LIFE)
honestly... at 400mhz the phone still quite snappy.

mine runs at about 30c most of the time.
however i did notice a strange issue that the phone gets alot hotter after you charge it and then unplug the charger, a reboot usually fixes this. i make it a habit of rebooting immediately after unplugging the charger and my phone stays most of the day between 30-33c
this also helps the battery life a lot, i can usually get by the end of the day with 60 to 80 percent left.
If you change your oil every 5k miles and put air in the tires and keep your fluids topped off you should be to.... ummm wrong forum. I though this was the nascar forum.

Has anyone considered the longevity of the phone and battery from the unit staying warm all the time?
Mine is pretty much warm the whole time it is in my hand when being used. Outside in the sun taking pictures even more so.
I don't think I have any runaway processes. After I restart the phone, I use a task killer to kill everything it boots up with initially. Everything which is needed, like about 4 things come right back up, so I excluded them. But I don't use to to autokill stuff. It's just when I boot up I noticed there are like 30 things started up for no reason being as I just turned off the phone.
I figured I know which ones need to be up cause they come right back up after being killed. But things like Google+, Maps, Gallery...etc...which I don't think need to be running at bootup I kill.
+1 on going back to 1.1... OC'd at 1.3 was killing battery and heating up like crazy! OC'd to 1.1 have no problem with UV, heat, and get 30+ hours battery life with moderate use.
It's not just the CPU/GPU usage what's heating up the Atrix...
That specific area of the Atrix contains CPU/GPU and also the GSM/3G/Wifi and Bluetooth radio chip, which can get really hot while broadcasting voice/data. Even if the radio is idle, if you are on a bad reception area it will be constantly searching for coverage and switching from 3G/4G to 2G, which creates heat and battery drain.

Just had a quick question about the operating temperature of my atrix.
My previous phone was a captivate, which NEVER felt hot to the touch unless I ran the GPS for awhile.
It was the same for my Atrix until I ran a graphics intensive game for about an hour or so. It started to get hot while playing, so I stopped for awhile. Ever since then, it is almost always warm to the touch and is continuously operating at 50C+.
So, is this normal? What are everyone's operating temperatures?
Miine runs warm under higher stress. It is a dual core processor so heat will be higher then other phones

this result was after taking quite a few pictures with camera360 i noticed the bottom of the phone VERY hot.
these are about the temps that i get. it especially heats up when using data connection for web and not wifi. with wifi, it peaks at about 50c and on data connection it can go up to 57c.

Strange how people have dif experiences. My Captivate was always hot always! It only runs slightly cooler now with one of the latest CM7 nightly.
My Atrix gets warm sometimes but I never have the extreme heat other users report. I dont use and task killers, only watchdog to monitor for runaway apps. I do use a Commuter on both.
My phone only saw the 50's when I left it charging under a pillow.When to ATT store and got it replaced.Replacement phone runs all day at 35C never seen it go past that.
And do use a commuter case aswell.

Hmmm. My tempstature is 50°C at idle, while connected to WiFi. Is that bad?
EDIT: Well no, it goes back down to about 38° when you leave it for a while. But 50° temps are quite common.

Its my understanding that the Atrix IS running a dual core optimized version of Android 2.2. Afaik our current version of Blur is NOT dual core optimized, but Im not 100% on that. Is Blur what you are referring to.? Also, apps have to be written to take advantage of both cores, so if the app wasn't specifically programmed to run on dual core it will run on just one.

I've started a thread early today because of this issue. Soon as I started playing games on my Atrix I got pretty scared with the temperature I felt on the exterior, and more scared after using temp. monitor apps.

The idea is to mod the phone to help dissipating heat. Besides undervolting with setcpu I guess there isnt much that can be done at software level to reduce the main chip's heat.
The ideas are still being formulated. I opened the thread so I could get some help and suggestion from other atrix owners, to have a good idea of what to do when I finally open my phone

Did a bunch of looking around and after a while found some white papers with the following temperature ranges:
General operating temps of -40C to +85C.
Practical usage will start to drop off below -20C and above +70C.
This tells me that our safe operating range should be limited to the practical usage temperatures. Anything outside of these and there is a good chance you will see performance drop off fast, and also may suffer hardware lockups, etc.
Personally I will stick to +65C which is the rule of thumb I go by with my PC's under full load.
<edit> <edit> I would also add that while our phones are not desktops/laptops/workstations, the CPU's can all handle around the same temperatures in all devices. Materials used and manufacturing techniques are almost identical. The solder used has a melting point of around 180C - 190C, so there is no fear of melting the solder. The main difference is that phones do not have active cooling, so you will see much larger jumps and swings in temperature. This being the reason you cannot OC in the extreme ways you can with PC's.
My rule of thumb is to keep my phone under 50c Max. The battey chewing alone is bad enough above 45c.
Ideally, I try to keep my phone below 40c whenever possible.
If it's a constant problem, then I usually try to find a different modem or fw. Which can make one heck of a difference...

I've been using S II for over 2 weeks now! I get the following(which many of you do get also). When I turn on WiFi and start surfing, the phone starts to overheat and battery is drained like a juice.
Well, after a long study, I've found out that it's the stock browser's fault!
Yeah! I opened WiFi, surfed a little and it started to heat up! Well, I was trying to download something, and since stock sucks at downloading( except if you add to it an app from the market called Downloadfiles) I opened DolphinHD!!
What I saw, or felt-whatever-, was just
After 5 minutes, the phone cooled down, temperature became normal and of course battery was less consumed!
So, to all people who have heat issues, it turns out(at least in my humble opinion) that it's the stock browser's fault!!!
Any thoughts anyone? Similar experiences?
I've been using it for 10 days and experienced no such overheating, but battery time should be much better.

I thought mine was faulty, but I went to couple of stores where they have it open for customers to play with, and I did the same as mine and it started to heat up!
Mine heats up a bit after playing a game or running a certain app for a while, but I never experience overheating with the stock browser. Though you should take in to consideration that the GS2 is a thin device, the CPU is close to your hands. Most phones also have to exessivly keep searching for connections because it is weak or something is blocking its way. The transmitting/receiving device is located at the top along with the CPU so it'll tend to get hot. Most smartphones do overall.
Also, the phone gets hotter while using it connected to a charger just because the battery is filling up the same time you are using it. Also, take in to consideration that no patch for true dualcore support has yet been released nor announced. Just some factors why the phone heats up.

Well, heating up is normal-as far as I read in here-... But when using Stock Browser, I'm talking about overheat! really! I believe it's a bug, since as said, nor Firefox, Dolphin and Skyfire(I use all of them) produce that issue! And I disabled flash content(thought that might make it better) but it was the same! Don't know!

OVer wifi I have no problems. Over 3G is another story! and playing games is another story. It warms up every 5 minutes while playing games.

What is Overheating? How do you know it is overheating unless you know the temperature of the battery? Well OP and other posters who are saying the phone gets overheated please mention the temperature of it. The ambient temp of Europe/USA is 20-25°C Max, and if the device runs even cool then it will have temp around 30-32°C, that is much higher than the ambient temp and probably that's why you guys are feeling the phone is overheating but in fact it's not. Here in Calcutta, ambient is 32-33°C and the Phone temp in normal is the same, so we/I don't feel it's overheating, only when I surf net for an hour straight with charging then the temp rises up to 44-45°C, that's when it could be said that the phone is running on high temp, still for the hardware we are given 45°C is not hot.
So before saying the phone is overheating please check the battery temp.

There is a reason stock browser uses more battery and heats more. It uses GPU to render pages more quickly! But for me even on stock it is not that hot, more than on other phones, but thats what you get for a thin phone.
Maybe somone will test battery life with stock+GPU and dolphin browser with no GPU. Maybe the difference is not that big at all, maybe just GPU heats more than CPU but uses same battery.
now let's not forget android doesn't have graphics acceleration, and without it the GPU has to work harder which generates more heat

Your ambient is 27°C, right? So it's normal to me. Anything less than 50°C should be OK, imo.

Summer in Greece and sub-30-degrees Celsius don't go together.That's why we're hot!
Anyway,****ty joking aside,inside a bus today,under the sun with an ambient temperature of about 35-36 degrees(dunno how you put the degrees symbol pal ) and with my GPU overclocked at 400MHz with 1100mV using tegrak overclock ultimate,I played some Angry Birds and,although the phone reported no more than 44 degrees,it was very hot at the top.
My opinion?If you(or me obviously) manage to somehow burn/fry something,make sure to do it so bad that it doesn't even respond to Chuck Norris' roundhouse kick! That way maybe Sammy won't notice...Shush!

So, how hot is too HOT?
Just web browsing today, with WiFi and GPS off, the CPU temp got to 144F, and battery was at about 115F. Is this normal?
Another time, when I was using the GPS navigation for approximately 1hr it got even hotter than that, it was seriously HOT to the touch, not just warm.
At idle, no activity for an hour, with WiFi, Screen, & GPS off, I get temps of CPU: 110F, and Batt: 95F.
The phone is still within the 30day warranty from AT&T so I just want a definitive answer if this is normal or not before I try and get it replaced.

Are you overclocking? I'm using faux's 1.3 GHz kernel and I sit at idle temps of 30-35 celsius and when I game I get up to 50-60 celsius. Our processors are rated for up to 160 fahrenheit I believe. As long as you aren't breaking 60 celsius I'd say your fine.
Your battery is running perfectly fine though. Just remember, or phones don't dissipate heat like a computer would. The fact we have two cores is going to make our phones run pretty hot

I do have faux's 1.3 GHz kernel as well, and have a profile to have it clock down to 1.0GHz when the temp hits 60 celsius.
I just disabled the profiles in SetCPU to keep the OC at 1.3GHz, enabled WiFi, GPS, opened google maps, and launched Air Attach HD – played for approximately 20 min and saw a CPU temp of about 62-63 celsius.
At idle I usually don't ever see CPU temps below 40 celsius.
So it looks like from what your saying this should be about right?
I know I've gotten hotter than this before, but it may have been mostly battery temp as I was using Google Navigate, which eats the battery fairly quickly.
I'm use to the PC world, so I know what to look for; however, over-clocking mobile devices is completely new to me.
I've been trying to find the thermal specs for the Tegra 2 chipset, and can't seem to find them anywhere, but if your saying it's 160F, than I think I'm good.
I noticed too that my phone is getting hot with oc'ed to 1.3 and a gingerbread rom, with gps on.. Also my gps navigator sometimes closes by its own..
Froyo roms, without custom kernel, was just fine, faster and more stable than any gb rom.. And WAY MUCH BETTER battery life.. I missed froyo days..
Upgrading to Gingerbread, wasnt really an upgrade.. Was a downgrade..
i hope CM, solve those issues..

trying to figure out if overhaeting of the phone is related to which hardware revision the device is.
Seems that revision XA might be more prone to overheating. If y'all could, please answer this question to see of those that have overheating, might be better served getting a warranty replacement.
you can find your hardware version on the label underneath the battery.

Mine is XA and it has never overheated on any ROM or kernel. I'm running CleanROM 4.4 on the new firmware. The only time it has even gotten warm was when I tethered while charging. It hit about 41c (106f).

Mine is XA and it got really really hot on the first ICS RUU (130 degrees). It still gets pretty hot after 5 miuntes of straight screen use, about 120 degrees. It sits at about 115 when streaming pandora. I'm on the new RUU leak and clean rom 4.4 on top of that.

This is acceptable? hmmmm....im starting to think that phone companies make them like this because people will be so bedazzled( if you will) with the hardware that the battery heat and meltdowns wont matter lol

Got it on release day and have never had a heat problem
I voted for overheating and other.. (B).. both my phone and my wifes do this.
I should note we both have 3.8volt batteries too.
I have Rev A and have never had a problem with it overheating. I think all this overheating stuff is just people getting worried that their phone is a little warm to the touch.
I remember seeing people rant and rave about how their OG Droid was overheating and how it was this and that problem. What they usually classified as overheating was about 110-115F, which is nothing in the grand scheme of things compared to the temp processors normally run at. Just for the hell of it I looked up the failure point of the OMAP that it had and it was about 200F! Two times I actually did have it overheat where it was hot to the touch, temp monitor read about 175F. Now that's a temp to get worried about!

dang, sounds like me on my thunderbolt, broke the back cover pins quick on that thing switching every few hours. I have extended batteries so I only swap once, maybe twice a day if its a long day.

not worried so much about the processor, if it overheats and the phone reboots then I know I need to exchange. But the battery getting so hot (> 120F) causing it say battery overheat and refusing to charge is concerning.

My phone never gets past 110ish. Htc told me that 50c is max safe temp which is 122f. So for for you guys that are hitting 125f+ I don't know what you do to get your phone that hot, but something is wrong. 30 mins streaming netflix on 4g puts me no higher than 115f

I'm an A.
Will get warm when I am burning alot of 4g, otherwise, nice and cold.
My phone is version A and I've never had heat issues even running at 1.89 GHz. It will get fairly warm charging and running it hard on the stock kernel, but that's because it's pushing such a high charge rate to the battery and nothing abnormal.
I also run performance WiFi sometimes and still have very decent temperatures.

I have version A, and with my use I stay in the 110-120f. range regularly. Latest leak
Rev B. I had all kinds of heat problems, especially with the ICS leaks. But this latest leak is the best the phone has done. If you're in this thread because of heat, they may have fixed your problem with this most recent build.
I have revision A and I still have the heat issues even on the newest leak
Rev. XA, had it since black friday, always gotten hot (120+), if I watch netflix/hulu on 4g for more than 20-30 minutes, it's at 125+ (even if it's the only app running)
The times I have 4g on / gps on/ (screen never set higher than 40-60%) it gets hot doing anything for longer than 10 minutes (115 +) If I have navigation on for 30 minutes or so it's over 120.
If I watch netflix/hulu on wifi, w/ gps/4g off, screen at lowest setting, it still gets 120+ after 20-30 minutes.
Rev XA 3.7 stock and 3.7 ext batteries. Stock / not rooted or anything.

Over 110 is normal for this phone. Mine rarely gets that hot unless streaming stuff on 4g. But I would say 110-115 on heavy 4g use is normal. 122 is max. After that is when it should shut off

the 110 degrees might be wrong. My phone isn't on at the moment so i cannot tell u how hot it is. the heat totally killed my battery, and i had to order a new one.im trying to avoid the heat destroy this new battery. what u think?

There are a skillion threads on heat on these boards.
Your phone will not shut down at 110. Your phone will not shut down at 120. If you are in 1x, your phone will heat. If you are playing a HD game, your phone will heat. If you are in a hot car, your phone will heat.
But your phone will NOT shut down at 110. If your phone really did shut down at that temperature, then RMA it.

newest leaked RUU has fixed this problem. ruu and flash a new rom and not a restore and you will see you phone stay under 100.
I'm running identical setups on 2 phones but one of them gets super hot when charging and also hotter when under the same moderate use.
The newest leak may have fixed it for you, but it hasn't for me. I still struggle with heat. Mine got to 120 surfing the net on wifi in airplane mode just yesterday. I think they have bad batches, and until you get a good one, you will have this issue. This is my third Rezound, and it may be going back as well. I really want to love this phone, but am getting a little tired of trading them in. Hopefully the fourth time is the charm.

I sure would like to contribute to this thread but it would be helpful if someone could answer me and tell me how to measure the temperature, please.
Battery monitor app from the Market will track/display the temps.
This phone does run hot, and the ICS builds are hotter than GB was. I can still overheat mine with prolonged heavy surfing, esp on WiFi, but the latest leak is far better than the preceding ones, at least as far as my phone is concerned.
I didn't do anything. My phone has been in my pocket for about an hour, but setCPU says the current temp is 80.7*F. That seems pretty reasonable.

lol mine still easily hits like 105..im not complaining because mine never 'overheats' but the RUU, if anything, makes it run warmer for me.
I am totally stock. Hit about 114.6F in a 75F shady room after playing Temple Run for about 20min and then streaming 45min worth of Youtube via 4G. I was also charging it for about 1/2 the streaming time.
It felt really warm; warmer than I ever felt it. That is waaaay harder than I ever use my phone though so it doesn't bother me.
After wireless tethering for an hour on 4G: 115*F
Still, this doesn't seem warm enough to warrant any concern. It does not seem to ever get this warm during regular usage, and even now it doesn't seem warm enough that I should be worried.
dose the heat from the phone contribute to the limited battery life.?if the official update dont fix this im gonna sell it.
I've never gotten over 114 degrees and I rarely ever get to 110.

Now that we have custom kernels
I wanted to see how people are managing their overheating issues. I am on my 6th rezound and I use it as my main GPS. I am sooo sick of the flashing red and green bulb telling me I can fry bacon on my phone.
SO here is what i have...
S-off of course, ruu to latest global , then custom hboot 2.27.
Viper, with dsp 1.0.7 custom kernel . All frequencies and are undervolted by 100 mv ( anything more causes stability issues )
I use incredicontrol for max 1.0 ghz with lagfree governor and bfq
guess what, i am still overheating.
Any more manipulations i can do to prevent walking around with a toaster oven ?

I hear ya, I have tried just about every combo of rom, kernal, gov, Etc...
Still hit 130 deg.
Maybe we can just use them to sell toast on the streetcorner
I think you just get a good or a bad one, for me all 4 have overheated
Personally I think its BS and about ready to chuck it into the Fire and really watch it Burn!!
