I must point out that I am pretty new to the whole custom ROM thing, I still have the stock ROM and everything on my xperia x10,
so my question is which ROM gives the best performance (ie less lag, good battery life, not many bugs, etc)? and can you give me simple instructions on how to install it because I don't want to screw something up and brick my phone, please?
Also when having a custom ROM installed, are you able to implement (install) patches given out by sony ericsson or you just follow the forum and wait for the developer of the ROM to make a patch, and if there's a patch from the developer how do you install it? (I presume you can't install the patches from sony ericsson, I'm just asking). And how often does the developer release the patches?
And do I have to delete everything with a factory reset from my phone before I do ANYTHING? at which step should it be done? can I backup everything using backup and restore program that's already aboard the x10 and restore it later, or the program will disappear when I install a custom ROM? if it wont, will it bring back my sms and mms effectively, and applications too?

I'm definitely a fan of trips miui rom. He also just came out with a miui gingerbread rom, it's a bit unstable at this point though.

Hi there, as you can see from my post count, I'm pretty new to this as well. I've only tried wolfbreak so far but am amazed at it's stability. As far as I've seen you will lose SMS etc however lots of things can be saved to the cloud, so first thing I'd do is make sure all contacts are marked as Google sync
I initially found the flashing to be problematic, but that was mostly because I was an idiot and failed to notice that the flashing software also adds functions such root access and xrecovery when the phone is NOT in flash mode. Since. Then I've been able to upgrade to the latest version (06) without even using a computer. Simply downloading the file onto my phone, moving it with the included file manager and rebooting to the recovery menu
I know have a faster more responsive phone with lots of added features such as Flash, Voice Search and loads more customization options. IMHO well worth the twenty minutes or so it will initially take
Make a note of your favourite apps as well, as the market only remembers paid for apps not your free ones, but for me the change over was pretty seamless and after only a day and a half with it am more than happy. So much stuff is held within the cloud that setting back up isn't the mega ballache it seems before doing it
Wolfbreak's ROM is the most 'fun' to use, the most tweaks avaliable
TripnMIUI's ROM is one you need if you just want your phone to work. Also, it has an iphone-like look (IMO I hate it, but some people like it)
Jereplea's Gingerbread mod is for those who want to be active in making the ROM better and test Gingerbread and custom kernels. It's not really that stable, but it's getting better by the day and it's the most updated ROM.
IMO those are the 3 big ROMS, there are smaller ones and you're free to check them out, they're pretty good too, but those are just my opinions on the top 3 ROMS.

Awesome ROM i'm using right now is Freex10 Beta 4 (Android 2.2), with the video recorder fixed. The ROM is stable and excellent. Runs really fast.

If you want a really good looking ROM, try the Bitsnacker 2.1 rom. It is basically the stock rom with the bitsnacker blue glow theme.

I've been testing many custom ROMs for a while, and up to now, the ones I liked the most are TripNMiUI's and Wolfbreak's ones. It's hard even to pick up one of them... TripNMiUI's has a great visual and is very clean. Wolfbreak's, in the other hand, works flawlessly and very stable, and I love that ARC's style.
Actually, I'm using Wolfbreak's now.

Or use the app Titanium Backup to restore all apps and data when switching. Works like a charm for me.

I'm looking for the best/easiest/most functional rom.
I want:
apps to SD to work
all normal programs to work (gmail, gps, sms, camera, market, etc)
speedier phone?
any bonus functions (ie overclocking).
I have read a few tutorials on how and they led me here to find the roms. However, I don't know which one is newest/best for my needs.
I probably won't root until after my road trip this week. I also need to research backups, so a few days of responses are welcomed before I do anything.

Do you have a preference for android version? 2.1 (Eclair), 2.2 (Froyo), 2.3 (Gingerbread)?
Do you want the HTC Sense UI?
Personally: I like CELB Froyo. It's Android 2.2, no Sense UI (I like the plain jane (and faster) ADW launcher/CM look). Hook it up with SetCPU and you have yourself some overclocking. Flash gapps and you have all the google apps.
The best ROM to keep you close to stock but get most of the things you want is probably xtrSense. It was the first one I used and I was really happy with it. Now I'm on GSB, an android 2.3 ROM. It's amazing but definitely a lot different from the stock phone. I would just recommend reading the front pages on multiple roms to get a feel of what they offer & what appeals to you.

Depends on what you like. If you like the stock HTC Sense UI, then Zach's xtrSENSE always gets rave reviews. It is Android 2.1
The current Cyanogenmod 7 (Android 2.3.3) is incredibly stable and fully functional. I have been using Workshed's "GSB" - GingerShedBread since first release. Shed does great work, actively updates every 5 to 10 days, and is quick with tech support in thread.
GSB is my vote for best. Easy, they're all easy just follow the OP.
What I like about CM7 and GSB:
- Android 2.3 improved memory manager.
- Theme Manager has simplified applying themes.
- Power widget in notification shade (CM6 had this feature too)
- Very responsive user experience gives new life to old hardware.
- built in CPU settings plus lots of other settings to play with.
- Actively being developed. (Although currently in a feature freeze and focusing on bugs, there have been a few minor new things snuck in)
- Its fun

+1 xtrSENSE, just be aware that for Apps2SD under 2.1 (Eclair) like xtrSENSE, you have to partition your SD card. If you use the native Froyo or Gingerbread Apps2SD, you normally DON'T want to partition your SD card, and don't have to for their native Apps2SD capability, either.
In addition to all of the raves about xtrSENSE, I'll add that it's cache2cache feature may remove the need for apps2sd. I'd try xtrSENSE without it first, see if you have enough room, and then move to apps2sd later on if you need it.
I completly agree with amfetamine and would echo: Cyanogenmod 7 is by far my favorite (Android 2.3.3) is fully functional and excellent.

I don't know if I like 2.2 or 2.3 (or versions of them) because, well I don't have 2.2 or 2.3 on my phone...
Ideally, I want to loose next to no functionality and get some performance/memory boost out of the first ROM I play with.
My concern at the moment is pre-rooting backup. I tried the trial of mybackup before my first factory reset and it didn't restore any personal stuff 30 minutes after I installed it I can manually move my pictures and google-ize all my contact but there are a few sms/mms I'd like to save.

There are two kinds of backups in My Backup. "Applications & Media" and "Data". You have to do both separately. Backing up Photos is redundant because they should be saved to your SD card anyway, and a ROM flash won't overwrite your SD card. When doing Data, don't bother backing up Contacts or Calendar since those will be sync'd with Google already. It's up to you if you want it to back up your call log (useless for me, IMHO) and maybe some other options. "Data" is the section of backup in My backup which offers to backup SMS and MMS, as well.

recnetly i have checked few roms and used for some time with stock kernel. I have tried Ginger DX, minicm7 v21. And here what conclution i came to:
Best rom is....stock one 2.1, no matter what features other roms do have still 2.1 is the best.
Why ? here is a lilttle overview what i think minicm7 and most of custom roms have better essential stuff than stock.
Advantages:
New android market
Battery life
New android version 2.3x
Flash Support
Better sound quality on video camera
Disadvantages:
Bad performance
roaming doesnt work properly (in some countries it connects to network in some it does not)
native thetering doesnt work
user interface just looks awful compared to original stock
Photo camera application (picture quality is just bad compared to stock)
Opera browser doesnt work stable
So i just pointed the things whom i think are really essential for a good rom.
Now a little notice about performance...
Dont be fools, do not believe that 2.3 has better performance than Stock.

Only Quadrant scores are higher, but in practise performance is worse!
with same launcher pro and even less icons and widgets on minicm7 the performance is way worse than stock rom. For example if i want to give a call and open contacts i have to wait for a second at least to load contacts application, same with messages unless i kill all the tasks. I dont have this with stock rom. Another notice, if i use lets say Opera browser or Gameboid emulator and then go back to dekstop, widgets and icons always has to be re-drew per new. This doesnt happen on stock. Overal even with killed apps games on 2.3 are running worse then on stock 2.1 (Where is my water? Angry Birds, Gameboid, Snesoid).
So is it really worth to upgrade? I think no it is not worth to upgrade. Unless you die-hard need Flash Support and Video Camera sound. Then yes. For the rest, no i dont think so.

bad performance - sorry but i do tweaks so mine is better than stock
roaming - dont need it
tethering - is there a native tether with stock?
awful interface - maybe but stock is well stock cant be changed
opera browser - mines doing great
I use MiniCM7 Pro V21 (By god Paul) on my phone and I'm just happy, stock user interface is so ugly compared to MiniCM7.
Only think I dont like is the Camera freezes sometimes while recording a video.

Maybe, but on stock rom I can't connect via adhoc connection. I share internet connectio via notebook. And on stock rom it is imposible to connect on that type of wifi connection.
Also, I need ultra brightness, what is also weak point for stock rom.

Yeah stock dont have usb and wifi tethering but in market u can find aps like EastTether or WifiTether.
And stock have best launcher for this device but I think this launhcer needs modification.I dont like this fact Only 1 widget at screen and no icons at screen.

I respect your opinion but I don't agree. Stock from is full of touch bugs, lacks dual touch, native tethering( works now with latest custom gb and ics nAa roms) . Also, we cannot remove some of the bloatware as it is attached to some .apk bundle and we could end in boot loop or even constant force close messages. I forgot to mention that /system has 20 mb only free so laggs are guaranteed... no apps to fat32 option. I tried many times to undervolt my stock roms with apps and .ko files etc. but didn't make it... stock battery life sucks.... gaming experience is cr4p.... I can't remember anything else cause I am on custom built roms many months now.... every opinion is well accepted.

Custom > Stock.
Only if you understand well how the phone works and how to set the phone's settings and features to it's minimum or maximum performance. And also, if you managed to tweak the phone to it's best performance.
Else, Stock is the best and only option for you.
Also @ OP, those disadvantages you pointed out, on the latest stable custom ROMS out there, all of it works fine now. Except ICS, still has work to be done with that version.

As for me the only disadvantage in custom rom's would be the hopeless battery life.

not really i believe you can use governors in custom roms but not in stock rom. thats why i have custom rom so i can use governors and apps to sd

I've been using custom Roms for a very long time, now.
I must say that, even though custom roms have some bugs, stock rom has some bugs also. And it lacks some features, which I consider essential.
The most important is the ability of saving apps in SD card. I know (and I've used it) there's link2SD, but I needed to root my device as well. Link2SD was very unstable.
Stock lacks flash and some apps won't run under 2.1.
Battery life? The same.
Stock apps? Great looks, I'll give them that. But some are very basic.
I needed to install some apps that come with custom roms. I prefer to install custom rom.
The main app, to me, is phone/contacts. Stock app is lame.
Will stick to cm7-2.2.0, for now.
Sorry to disagree in every point. I have a x10 mini (not pro).
I couldn't find a single advantage on the stock rom over the custom miniCM7 (2.2.1).
The stock 2.1 rom feels like a slower CPU and GPU, it's sluggish and lags to the touch. I think the interface is OK, with the corner shortcuts and the bigger icons. It was well designed, but I always end up unintentionally arrainging icons in the menus and the corner shortcuts because of the lag. Applications are painfully slow, including the dialer. As a windows computer: when I fresh install (factory reset) the mini, it's fairly responsive, but as soon as I install half a dozen apps it gets sluggish again.

I am a little dazzled because, in my x10 mini, things are about opposite. Everything is just smoother with the new rom, and the old rom fails me exactly in the way the new rom fails to you: it's unresponsive, slow, annoying, glitchy. Maybe it's just personal taste, or something is different between our phones.
OK so a year later and frustration with Moto update waits, I'm considering rooting this phone. My main reason for doing so is mainly to freeze or remove Blur and carrier (Bell) bloatware, but I have some questions about which way to go with this:
1. Rooting but not flashing a custom ROM. Instead, freeze the bloat using TiBU. This would be the far simpler method I think. I would then install a custom launcher (I currently prefer Launcher 7) and freeze the Blur home launcher so it doesn't run behind Launcher 7. My concern about this method is that I've read occasional reports by people that some of the "frozen" Blur system apps actually continued to work...
2. Flashing CM7. This is my 2nd choice. I'm a pretty lazy guy, and I don't mind rooting with how easy it is to do these days, but the extra work flashing custom ROMS isn't appealing to me. If I am forced to go this route, (a)What's the best way to freeze or remove the launcher that comes with CM7 and replace with one of my choosing so that two launchers are not running at the same time? (b)Does CM7 come with all the Motoblur and Carrier stuff removed?
I would go with the CM7 route. it is a little more to do but not by much and the payoff will be much greater. once you have it though as far as the launcher goes just install the one you want and use titanium back up to uninstall ADW (the launcher that comes with most CM7 builds). And use CM7 is a non BLUR ROM so blur is fully non existant on it. and all the other bloat ware is gone as well. You can go even further and use the nuetrino ROM witch is reall barebones and you can add on the stuff you need but i would suggest grabbing the CM7 RC1 nightly and running with that. Any question on how to do any of this just read the noob guide over and it is a breeze and you will even seen how easy it is to do after that and find yourself testing out many diffrent roms.

I hae had no issues with camera quality on my CM7 and as far as the GPS car dock not sure how it will effect it. i can say that GPS over all is also not a issue for me. i dont have the car dock but i do use GPS navigation most of the day every day and have no issues.

Have you tried the miui camera app? I notice better quality with that camera app on cm7 than the stock cm7 camera app.

So my girlfriend got a X10 Mini (E10).
It came with 1.6 Cupcake, so I updated to official 2.1 and then rooted. Then installed nAa kernel and installed miniCM on her phone.
Seems to run smooth so far. But the anti-aliasing settings seems to be very off. It's hard to see the text.
But, there are some "bloatware" that she will not need and will probably press and mess up phone settings. Like the theme chooser, spare parts, terminal emulator, DSPManager, etc...
I know you can disable the shortcuts, but they still take up space. Yeah I know you can uninstall with what-you-call-it-app
But are there other roms that have minimal apps installed? It's her first smartphone, and I want her to be able to install and try a lot off apps. I saw the MIUI, but doesnt look like its stable yet.

There are so many Gingerbread roms to chose between, and there are quite a few ICS roms too! Don't know where to start really

Try MiniCM7 or DingerDX on the nAa GB kernel.
If you want to get rid of things like spare parts and dsp-manager, you can do so in Settings - Applications, or remove them manually from system/apps with a file-explorer with root access.
By the way: You may call that bloatware, but since they're all installed in system/app and not in the user-application space (data/app) they won't take away any space for user-installable apps, because the /data is on a different partition in the internal storage. And ofcourse you can always enable A2SD in settings - Cyanogenmod settings - Applications for more application-space.

Are there any good MIUI roms?
I tried Miui on my blade and its nice.
All you would need is MIUI with Airdroid app and I think she can handle android

Unfortunately The only real MIUI Rom is based on an ICS rom, which is not very stable and has not been updated in a while either. I would love to see a GB-based MIUI, but i guess everyone is too excited about ICS and JellyBean to do anything with GB anymore.

I'm currently running the latest nightly of CM9, really liking it at the moment but I'm always up for trying new things out. I've noticed the Omega AOKP ROM and saw it comprised of a few CM9 features.
My main question is more of a comparison, whats the difference between CM9 and Omega, are there certain benefits or which one do you solely prefer? Any info would be good so don't think I'm asking for an essay of a comparison, but just wondering if it's worth trying out, and why.
Saying that, any other ROMs that are worth trying as well?

I can almost bet that all the roms you can find here are good in their own way. Just try them and see which suits you better
Hey Joey.. you need to look at the changelogs. Look at what the ROMs have/come with. Flash em and try em for yourself. What works for one person may not necessarily work for another. Same with favorite features.. its all taste.
For that reason, threads like these are closed almost immediately. Its all a matter of opinion.
Omega is a Sammy ROM and CM10 is AOSP. If you don't know the difference Google it, or spend a little time on XDA.. Google is a faster answer. But in short.. things like swipe a contact to left or right for shortcut to SMS or Call, that is a stock ROM feature.. along with other features you will lose flashing AOSP.. but AOSP has its benefits too. Really, try em yourself and decide.

Cheers for replying so quickly, I figured I'd get a lot of "try it yourself" which I completely understand... and which I'll do.
I know there's a Samsung Omega ROM, but I thought there was an AOKP version as well? Im assuming the samsung one is based on the stock ROM, where as AOKP is based on open source.
Another question, when flashing a new ROM, whats the best way of restoring data. Currently using SMS backup for messages and have all contacts on google. But its just a bit of a ballache restoring apps and sync accounts, obviously I've heard of titanium backup and similar but I've read a few times not to use that to restore apps. Any help would be good as I'm slowly learning the android ways.... I've had a business supplied iPhone for years now and finally got sick of it!!
Closed, as mentioned above, you really need to try them yourself, no one else can tell you what the best fit for your usage patterns will be.
As far as backing up goes:
Titanium backup: apps (Don't restore system apps or system app data between diff roms, or even diff versions of the same rom), SMS, Call log, bookmarks (need pro for some stuff) (Generally, you can restore user app data between roms that use the same major android version, aka ICS > ICS, but not GB > ICS, you can try, at worst you will get FC's and have to do a full wipe) (Also best to grab the apps of the market and then restore data with TB)
