Galaxy SII notification LED? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I saw a lot of Galaxy S2 preview movies now. But one thing I'm still missing is the notification led....
Lots of reviews, do a review with the charger hooked to the phone. But there's nowhere a led burning that the S2 is charging or something.
Is there a indication LED on the S2 or did the people at Samsung just leave it out?
Personally I think I would miss the led notification if it isn't there.....
Is there somebody who can tell a bit more about this?

Nope, there is no Notification LED for Galaxy S II.

Yes, we do. Anyone care to start?

Somebody told me that on the Galaxy S there was a way to use the buttons on the bottom of the device to use them as a notification led.... Anybody has more information about this? Or a movie as an example?
Found it!

Would be nice if this could be done on the S2.

No LED notification - Is this final? This makes me sad :|

Will this stress the LED bulbs out to a point where they will die out?

No, LED's have a lifetime well over 25 years of normal daily use. You will never burn them out unless it was defective.

Well, then I will certainly look forward to his mod. Although the Sound alerts will also suffice.

But that'd only for SMS though

Would be nice if someone could make a program in which different patterns for lightning the leds at the bottom of the screen can be choosen. And that it's possible to assign different patterns to different notifications.
I often have my phone in my jacket, when I'm at work. The fastest way to check if I have a message or something is when I can take a look at the LED notification... We'll see what the future brings.

No LED? There is a video on YT of the boot-up sequence and at 20 seconds in a LED flashes purple at the top left (next to the front facing camera). The model is a retail version (as it has the Samsung logo on). Surely this is the notification LED - or am I mistaken?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nadLbii_TYA
Corrected - seems I was wrong! Didn't know the video had already been posted on XDA, turns out it is a proximity sensor

Any news on the mod which acitvates the light of the home and back button when you have a new message?

The app that you guys are searching for, to turn on the buttons, is called BLN Control.
Here's the site:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/bln-control-free/neldar.bln.control.free
It requires you to have a kernel that has a BLN mod however.

Finally its here!

Thanks for this. I checked the site but didn't see how to install it. So i googled it and found this:
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/enable-back-light-notifications-on-galaxy-s-ii-with-bln-guide/
You need to have a rooted sgs2 and CWM installed. download the zip from here (same link posted from the site mentioned):
http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1359&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.xda-developers.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D1200262&v=1&libid=1312840807984&out=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.multiupload.com%2FIY7A211PI7&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.xda-developers.com%2Fandroid%2Fbacklight-notifications-mod-for-galaxy-sii%2F&title=%5BMOD%5D%20BackLight%20Notifications%20for%20Galaxy%20SII%20-%20GT9100%20-%20xda-developers&txt=Back_Light_Notification_GS2_v3.zip%20(6.77%20MB)&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13128419398541
Flash it in CWM, then reboot. and now my buttons light up when there's a new message.
btw, you should also have the BLN control app from the market (the lite version is free, but less options of course.)
Update: I bought the pro version! and now i can set it to blink, plus it also blinks when there are missed calls. Lite version has only a static light and doesn't notify on missed calls.

Request: Camera LED Flashlight

Has anyone been able to find a working app that allows us to use the camera's LED Flash as a torch?
I've tried the various ones on the market place but no joy as of yet.
Would anyone care to have a crack at making one? Pleease
I have also been searching for this, I did find motos flashlight...but it didnt work on the streak
nobody got any ideas?
Wow am i missing this.
i live in the country and was always using the LED on my SE X1 as a torch especially in the dark nights it was a god send.
I'm hoping that once the septics ;-) get their Streaks some developers will pop out of the woodwork...hmm I wonder if Fards will have a crack at it?
would love this i couldnt find a led flashlight app that works on this or the htc evo 4g
I thought I'd give this a bump, now that our American cousins are piling in
I'm pretty sure none of the current apps will help us, it will have to be made specifically for the streak. Not sure how to go about making that kind of app, but it can't be too hard... right?
I'll look into it.

The htc evo 4g ver 2.2 comes with a flashlight that uses the camera's led's. Has 3 levels of brightness.
Maybe
I have a week off work and was going to knuckle down and get into some coding - i've never done Java before but I have the SDK and have found the resource documents for using the built in camera, and also the flash module.
I've got it worked out on a very very high level: include the camera library and set the flash to on or off. Beyond that I don't have a clue.
If I am successful, I am going to base this on the application for WM called TorchButton which I have been using on my HD2 for some time. It has on/off, SOS, strobe function.
http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581382 for TorchButton thread. I doubt this dev would port this to Android as it's very different code for WM/Android, but if you have a HD2 I would highly recommend that app.
Well, I've found that Droidlight on the market successfully turns on the LEDs... the only problem is that it can't turn them back off, not even taskilling it turns them off, only a reboot- so suffice it to say that usability is limited ;-)

There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding the LED control applications for Android and the camera flash light. Although LED's, they are not part of the function of the Android LED manipulator software. These applications just control the frequency and colour of handsets which have the LED notification lights on their front.

I think most people are clear but for newbies that may stumble into this thread I'll break down a description of 'LED' when referenced by apps/users etc.
Screen LED: The screen is an LED panel and some apps in the market place called LED torch are referring to the whole phone screen. They will often place a blanket colour over the entire screen (usually white) and refer to this as a torch.
Notification LED: Some android phones have small coloured LED's inserted in the sides or the top that will flash on receipt of a call or message(The Dell streak DOES NOT have any notification LED's).
Camera LED: This is the LED that sits beside the camera lens on the back of your Dell streak, It's used as a 'flash' when taking a photograph in a dark room.
The above request is for an application that will turn on the Camera LED. So that it can be used as a torch.
The camera LED is very bright and quite effective as a torch (N.B. prolonged use may/damage the LED bulb)

[Q] Notification LED Replacement

Hello people, to my dismay, I have found that there is no notification LED on the S2 and so I'm wondering whether or not there is an option, through apps or such, to get your screen to light up or something. Just doing some research before I get this phone as I don't want to be stuck with a problem without knowing whether it is able to be solved.
Thanks in advance
Use the No-LED app.
Edit - It wont light up your screen like a Pink Floyd concert, but it does provide color icon notifications for email, sms/mms, charging status etc
Thanks! I just looked up the app after reading your post and it seems perfect, with the bonus of being developed for the Galaxy S. Thanks again, it'll be among the first apps I'll get
To the guys who use no Led:
Is it true that it drains battery a lot?
Guess the is no alternative right now.
I would love blinking "menu" and "Back" Button rather than blinking screen...
I looked around for info on the this app and found the developer's thread about it. It's someone from XDA actually.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730692
i ll test it now anyway...
Try any kernel that supports bln and install bln control from the market. This way the buttons will light up if you missed anything ( you have to be rooted though)

Frankly speaking, it's a terrible idea to lighten the screen as notification. Yes it is absolutely true that it will drain the battery, definitely. So No-LED is a big No for me, especially when GS II have two backlited keys, we are just missing the BLN kernel support.
Regards.
"I would love blinking "menu" and "Back" Button rather than blinking screen..."
Exactly what I'm looking for too.
+1 for the blinking backlighted buttons idea!
<rant>I'm currently stuck with an old G1 with a dedicated notification multicolored LED and I'm getting ready to upgrade my phone (most likely the SGII) and I'm disappointed to see newer phones are lacking notification lights... It's not like it's a lot more expensive to implement... a simple colored LED with a timer interrupt and an I/O pin...</rant>
Anyways, I'd love to have the backlighted button as an alternative..
Thanks,
Stephane
Have you noticed that when the proximity sensor is on it turns red? Make a call and check it next to the camera. I guess we could use that as a notification led. I wonder what would eat more battery, the soft-keys backlight (like the BLN in i9000) or the proximity sensor.

[Q] Notification lights?

Is there a way to turn the hardware buttons into the notification light instead of the Power button led? I have a case that covers the power button and miss the notification blink that I had on the Atrix HD. Thanks in advance.
There's an older app for that on the play store. Called LG notification lights or something like that. Doesn't officially support OG, but might be worth a try. I don't recall any talk of the feature... Probably because we have a notification light. It was popular on the i777 though.

Thanks. I'll have to check that out. The only reason I want it is because of the case I have. :good:
I have confirmed that LG Touch LED Notifications by Martin Börjesson works on my E970 with KitKat AOSP 4.4.2. I have the Diztronic TPU case that covers the notification light. When I get a notification it will vibrate first (can be adjusted), then light the capacitive buttons. Perfect!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.martinborjesson.o2xtouchlednotifications
I used to have a Samsung Moment that did not have a dedicated notification light, the Devs used to do kernel edits that allowed for the BLN app by Neldar to work.
Also, just in case there is anyone like me who keeps their phone on vibrate but still wants notification lights for Gmail without the vibrate notification, do the following within the Gmail app:
Press hardware menu button or three squares menu button in top right of Gmail app to access Settings;
Select your connected Gmail account;
Leave Notifications box checked, press Inbox sound & vibrate;
Press Sound, select Silent;
Make sure Vibrate is unchecked.
What I would love to see is the ability to assign up to three types of notifications to the three capacitive buttons that we have.
Example:
Missed call = Back button
SMS message = Home button
Gmail message = Menu button
Missed call + SMS + Gmail = All three buttons lit. Hmm... maybe I will email this suggestion to the Developer of Trigger - location profiles to see if they could add this sort of functionality to their already awesome app.
Does anyone know if the E970 has one LED light to illuminate all three capacitive buttons, or are they three separate LEDs? Edit: Boo! Only has two... http://imgur.com/a/ydoJb
I've been using an app called ButtonLED I found on XDA since ICS days and still works with KitKat roms. The GUI is pretty basic and not the prettiest but the app is functional. When you turn the logs on, it will track what app or keywords appear in the status bar. You can then go in and add that app or keyword to be excluded and not trigger the notification. I'm going to check out the LG app and see if that performs better (battery drain, etc). Here's the link for the info on ButtonLED... http://www.xda-developers.com/android/buttonled-turns-your-hardware-buttons-into-a-notification-led/ Even though the app is not being updated, I've been running 1.6 with no issues.

didn't work on mine unfortunately. I'd tried it a couple of weeks ago while looking for solutions on this issue (along with many other apps). I'm on SnowJB. So far the only one that has worked is using Xposed+GravityBox... the problem with that one is that it seems to link the side notification LED red light to the front softkeys LEDs, so when the phone is charging and the red LED is flashing on/off the front LEDs flash as well. This bothers me because once I go to sleep and charge the phone the white front LEDs do seem very bright... plus I don't like the fact of having them flashing every night for 8 hours straight, gives me the impression that it'll cause them to get damaged much sooner than normal since they weren't really desinged to flash like that. There is an option on GravityBox that says DISABLE LED FLASHING WHILE CHARGING... which I thought could've helped to prevent that charging flashing but at least in my case that option did nothing,
It would be awesome if someone could come up with a mod for this. Even better if someone knew what file could be edited through root browser to make the red light flash faster on notifications.

didn't work either... which version did you install? (I saw there were several on the dropbox download link).
The problem I have with these apps is that they interrupt the normal function of the softkey lights... for example I like to have these lights always ON while my screen is ON as well, I don't like them to time out... and there is an option withing stock Android to set them up like that.... but when I use an app to use the LEDS for notifications for some reason it disables the stock preset and shutts them off entirely while the screen is on... I kinda gave up on this. I'd just be so happy if I could modify the frequency of the RED LED on the power button on notifications.

I use the same setup with cap keys always on. That's the downside all apps/mods have regarding the keys getting disabled when the screen is turned on after a notification. Simply turn the screen off and back on to reset the keys and they will turn back on/reset. I'm using 1.6.

Does this mean it LED on the back works like the one on the Razer Phone 2. You can change the LED colour to match the application recieving the notifaction, Gmail (Red), Twitter (Blue), Snapchat (Yellow) kinda thing? it seems like they did not think about it and when Razer brought it up as a selling point / feature Asus then jumped at the idea to get their LED to do the same. Seems it would be an Asus Aura Sync app setting than in the OS when they do update it with this feature.
Is this confirmed or just a rumour?
Also it would be nice to have an option to have the LED light up when not in X Mode however again its not mega important but might be nice but can see it not being on much as the battery will drain so quickly.

Hi,
The first thing is being planned in an update, as far as I know not yet implemented (I sold my ROG phone, as the CN version was just too messy to work with).
The second thing is already available, you can set the lighting depending on different "scenarios".

You can use "Light Manager" app to change the led notification light to 3 colors only (red, green, yellow) i don't think it's possible to change to more than those colors no matter what app you use.
Personally i don't use any app to change led colors(mainly to save battery) because on most of the chat apps i can change the color to green within the app itself, on my email/messages apps i change it to yellow.
I used to change the missed calls to red but by default it's green. so i left it the way it is.
I see no options to set up with notifications any help let me know pleqse

[APP] LEDBack Cover notification

The S10 LED Back cover do not allow you to do much, I created a third-application allowing you to specify which icons should be displayed and for how long when a specific application send you a notification.
You can go in the Screenshot section to see some details about the application.
How far can we control the case ?
Without root, and without adb, I am able to use the camera timer, display any of the 10 icons available, turning on/off moodLight mode.
Can I create my own icon ?
For now, no. Later ? No idea, probably not.
Download ?
You can download the apk here
If you are interested to work on this case you can contact me.

No idea, I never worked on it. It has nothing to do with the subject here.
This kind of features is too specific, and I do not think it can be possible using a third application to controls those led. Probably require system permission, or in worst case is hardware and cannot be control by system.
You are right and i agree with you completely.

Her main issue with the Samsung app is, that only very few apps for notifications can be chosen. Your app is much more flexible, but changes in your settings do not have any effect on the S20 cover.
