[Q] Rooting a locked phone? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Probably a basic question but I couldn't find a clear answer. It is likely my SII will be locked to O2. Probably don't mind living with that for a while but will it prevent me rooting the phone when Chainfire or Supercurio release their rooting apps? I know rooting will not unlock a phone but can I root a locked phone or does being locked prevent it being rooted?
TIA

Carrier locking does not stop you from being able to root your device.

yea im using xdandroid. -- really it's already rooted? :O so what if i click "buy" on the market for apps.
If you buy something in the market you pay and it's saved to your Google Account.
I thought when the phone is rooted, it exploits the android market and your able to download for 'free' or am I wrong and rooting the phone is just the first step.
Ouch, this thread will be locked since Warez is against the rules.
But no. Rooting just opens the phone so you can do just about everything.
Rooting....
Just as a final thought.. Rooting has nothing to do piracy.. It usually implies, as previously mentioned, unlocking, or allowing 'root' user access privilege.

[Q] Rooting without unlocking bootloader?

Not sure where to post this.
Anyway, I want to know if it's possible to root an Android without unlocking the bootloader. My problem is I don't want anything wiped off the phone. I'm trying to get past the lock screen, because I found this phone in the street, so I want to get the numbers in it to try and return it. I've heard you can bypass the lockscreen if it's rooted. It's a Samsung Galaxy S Mesmerize, (or Fascinate).
PS its not stolen. I'm not gonna downgrade from a nexus 4 to this, and it's in such horrible condition I cant sell it.
Yeah, it sure is possible but its device specific. I rooted a s4 that still has a locked bootloader, but I know that you have to with an HTC. Good luck!

Any idea if it's possible with the galaxy mesmerize/fascinate? I don't wanna screw this up and end up with a brick. I've never done this before.

I've rooted my xt920 with framaroot apk, it automatically unlocked my bootloader, try it, if it fails it´ll probably undo the changes

Rooting Flashed S4 verizon

Newbie here I bought a US Cellular S4 but it is flashed to Verizon. I am able to use GSM overseas. Now I want to root and I wonder if I do that, will I lose the unlock? And is it possible to root flashed S4? Will it go back to US Cellular after rooting? Thanks for your help

I would try Saferoot.
Just rooting definitely shouldn't affect anything wrt carrier flashing, but there's always some amount of risk involved.

No, you won't lose the unlock. The i545 isn't SIM-locked unless your carrier does something very unusual.
Rooting your phone should work just fine, but be careful what you mess with afterwards if you want to be able to go back to stock.

Does it matter if it was US Cellular before flashing? Thanks

"Flashing" to a non-VZ carrier usually only does cosmetic things to the phone- replacing VZ logos, adding the proper APNs, and so forth. The majority of the software is still VZ factory stock. So, you can still root, and still use whatever SIM you want.

Root?

Hey all,
This is a noob question for sure, but here goes. I have a LG V10 H901, which is the t-mobile variant. But I am using it with AT&T. It works flawlessly. With that being said, I really don't like to see the T-Mobile boot animation. I want to change it. I know I need root. But my question is this: Am I to assume that since the hardware is T-Mobile, I will have to root it as a tmobile phone? Also, if I do root it, (tmobile), will I lose the info regarding the at&t network stuff?
Thanks all.

Yes you do have to root using the TMO method as this is the only root method available. When you unlock the bootloader (the first step in rooting), your device will get reset and wiped as if it was right out of the box. So yes you will have to at&t stuff and will have to enter the APN info again. But that is simple enough to do and does not take that long. That is the downside, the upside is you will achieve root and the device will be yours to do with as yours wish.
Philly,
Thank you for answering my questions. I was able to fully root the device w/o any hiccups.
Thanks again for helping me out!

You might as well get xposed modules going and run amplify and greenify for battery saving.

Hence why im here i havent rooted a phone before. I have had rooted device but I've never done it. I'm needed a way to natively use hotspot for an emergency basis. I've tired to look around on the forums and on the internet to no luck(could be user error) does anyone no or have a way to root this device. I'm assuming it's a snapdragon processor since I'm in the USA. Verizon is the carrier
Have you tried the Guides section for this device?
If it is indeed a Snapdragon device, it is likely the bootloader cannot be unlocked, therefore it is not rootable.
