As some of you may recall the HTC Shift shipped with quad GSM bands, but had no GSM voice call functions. As I recall, the devs were finally able to turn on GSM voice functions on the Shift. Do you think that the devs can also enable the Flyer to use GSM Voice functionality?
Flyer has already active voice and video call...it works like samsung tab,go to youtube or telefonino.net and you will see that they make a phone call with it.

From what I understand, the only voice and video calls on the Flyer that are presently supported are VoIP calls. The Flyer manual only mentions VoIP calls, but not video or voice calls using GSM. Do you have a link to a video showing a voice call using the GSM bands?

Edit: Rechecked the manual, and it does not even specifically mention VoIP calls, but for sure through Skype that is possible. Before the worldwide HTC site showed video calls, but I assume it was a Skype call. Amost all sites still say that the HTC Flyer does not have GSM call functionality. Does anyone have a Flyer to test this out?

I was searching more than 4 hours to find out if the voice call is available out from the box, but it doesn't. although in user manual it doesn't specify about this, i think it will be possible by root access and custom rom (with our dev support). all we have to do, is to wait until is out from the market. as I understand the euro version is coming out today...... I hope, will see some review very soon!
I am ready for donation to the one which will make this happening!!!!

Thanks for the confirmation. Hopefully the devs will be able to enable the GSM voice functions, since the GSM bands are available, except for the wifi version of the Flyer.
The Flyer went on the market here in Taiwan a few days ago, but so far I have not been able to see one, as it is only on the Internet and not in shops so far.
I too would do what I can to help to enable the function.
I saw an HTC Flyer in a store window this evening, but did not have time to stop in and make inquiries whether it was the GSM/3G data or wifi model, but from what I could see it is a beautiful piece of kit. I liked the looks of it better than the Samsung Tab.

just a quick question, on gingerbread there is suppose to be internet calling or voip dialing support out of the box. Is this feature available on this phone??

nope, don't have the ability to setup voip providers on stock -- unlike CM7 on my desire, where I could add "internet phone providers" in the settings->phone area

Just tried to install a dialer on my Flyer. I am not able to install Dialer One. It is obviously set to be not compatible.
I will try copying the APK from my phone when I get some time and see if it installs.

I don't have the Flyer yet, but was considering it as my next device.
But now that you are reporting no GSM phone feature, I am shocked !
Most all major reviews that gave specs said it had quad band GSM !

As someone who has an original 7" Galaxy Tab, I can say that whilst I don't use the voice calls often, I've definitely found it very useful from time to time. I don't see why we should put up with what is essentially an artificial restriction.

Why people keep asking these things is really something
there's a thread that people even willing to pay for US galaxy tab to be able to call with that thing
there's some people who prefer all in one device instead of bringing 1 tablet and 1 phone separately, especially with bluetooth device so common now
I'm thinking of changing my tab to flyer when i learned that flyer can make calls, but after hearing this, i'm glad i bought my tab much earlier ^^
i have my galaxy tab, and as long as HTC wont make calls am sticking to my galaxy tab, i don't know if HTC think they can go head to head with ipad and think they will have the upper hand, am HTC loyal but of course if ipad and flyer are booth useless "feature wise" then i will go to ipad
I found this thread to be very amusing. The Flyer is a Tablet, if you want to make calles then use your phone. To my knowledge none of the tablets that are even equipped with cellular data make phone calls. Not even the ipad makes phone calls.
The old HTC Advantage which is more a netbook did make phone calls. However you had to use a headset

Yes, I have to agree here. I don't need my tablet to be a phone. In a pinch, I can make a call via Skype. A tablet will never make me shed the convenience of a smartphone.
Now that we have s-off and root, is a solution yet to get the phone and dialer to work on the View?

It may turn out that you will not be able to use your present SIM card as with some dongles, the carrier may only allow data (no voice calls) through it. Test the SIM in a standard phone for calls.
It'll be interesting to see if another carrier's SIM works in it also.

There is no sim in the view. I'm not aware of any sprint device with a sim card.
Yes the sprint phones do not use a sim card. I added the lines to my build.prop file that are listed in the clubtech hack. Although the line
ro.phone.function=1
Was already there. I was able to place a call. The person could hear me and I could hear them although the volume was kind of low. I have not tested it with a bluetooth headset yet. Also keep in mind that I don't know but I believe any calls you make will count as data on your tablet data plan.
My concern was with upsetting sprint... you have your view on a regular view plan and not a phone plan right?

Ah, OK, not actually seen one physically.
It must be a surface mount pre-programmed version locked to Sprint.. I can foresee difficulty in getting the phone to work then if it is set to data only on the network.
Edit: Just seen his success...
I'll be following this thread closely as I am on the fence for picking up a Sprint View. If phone calls are somehow enabled on this device then I will most likely pick one up.

You will probably find calls suddenly being blocked at the network then once they find out users are able to make them. They will not give anything for free!
If you want to use the view to regularly make calls, I would advice looking for the thread that tells you how to do this using a market app groove ip and gtalk and gvoice. That is your best bet. While using the view as a phone is possible, DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK. This means if you use it and sprint blocks your account don't blame xda nor the members here.
I'm just interested in getting rid of groove ip. I would rather have a phone function than another app running in the background. I actually went from a phone plan to straight tablet plan with groove ip. I only need phone functionality incase the school needs to call me about my kids.
With all of the files on the the tablet but hidden and the fact that the only thing needed to enable the phone was a couple of lines in the build.prop makes me wonder if maybe sprint had looked at possible phone plans. Then either decided against or possible a future offering.

This is what I thought, too. I think they left it out until they could come up with a good game plan for it. It's inevitable that tablets will be phones as well. The asus memo is going to help usher it in. I'm just not an att fan and that's more than likely where that one is going to hit.

I don't know, I think there is more to it than that, or HTC would have enabled phone calls on the WWE Flyer for all others to use.
I still think HTC had some problem gaining approval with this design from Google for GB and had to leave out the phone function.
Why else disable fitted hardware when it would be a bigger selling point if working? It makes no sense!
For the time being I'm using nettalk. I had to install it on my evo first then copy and send the apk to my view via dropbox. Once it was installed I was able to make "data" calls with my view with no bt headset...mic and speakers worked just fine. This was done before clubtech posted his patch.
So has anyone been able to get the phone function working with clubtech's work around?
I've done exactly what he advised, added those lines to my build.prop and even added unlimited mobile to mobile minutes to my tablet plan (yes it exists, I work at a Sprint store and added it myself) but I'm not able to dial out or receive incoming. The phone service doesn't run, ever, even when trying dial out a call.
I know the GVoice method works but I'd really like to be able to open this up without having to use extra apps.
yes theres a way. I did that on my HTC FLYER 3G. I created a full detailed document on how to do that on HTC FLYER but I used some sources on xda developer forum in order to do that. I have this exact setup; T-Mobile USA SIM in a 3g Flyer. I have the voice disabled on the SIM, but for data purposes, the SIM connected to the network perfectly. Got 4g speeds in Chicago and the burbs. The phone app comes up and works, but because I disabled the voice on the SIM, the network gives me an appropriate error when I try to dial. When I go international, I plan to get an unlocked SIM w/data and a local number, and use the Flyer w/BT as my main phone. Will also prevent massive roaming charges and should allow my Google Voice to work as well.

That is incorrect; I got my flyer off eBay and it's from overseas (probably Singapore, as that's where the seller lives). I determined 4g access via Speedtests app. It might well be the same unit at what T-Mobile sells, but it's not T-Mob branded.

Thanks for the clarification. I ordered a US tmobile branded flyer from ebay for $350 nd I was hoping to use it as a phone and for data. Since it's similar to the one you have, I'm hoping the roms are the same for it.

Well dam I'm sorry for wasting your time. Despite winning a 4g flyer on ebay, a wifi flyer arrived in the mail! I have already tried contacting the seller on friday and he still hasn't responded to me. I guess I have to go down the arbritration route with ebay and in the end, I won't have a 4g flyer. Oh well, maybe it wasn't meant to be but thanks for all the info!
Well that sucks! I'm getting accustomed to having my Flyer with me, and the 3g/4g is a godsend when I'm in a hotel with lousy wifi coverage. I'm still looking for a good Honeycomb GSM phone call solution, but so far no decent hacks yet that work. If ICS ships within Q1, that may solve my problem.

Well I finally got in touch with the seller and I got my money back. There is a seller on amazon called "Samy's Savings" who is selling the 3g flyer for only $399. I placed an order and have my fingers crossed about getting the right one this time. I have a question for you though.....What data plan are you using with T-mobile? I was thinking about using the flyer as an phone since I already have data on my main phone. As I've read more on the forum, it seems that the best way to use the flyer as a phone is to either use a bluetooth headset or a wired headset. If this is the case, I will probably just use the flyer as data only. Also, have you tried using the flyer as a portable hotspot? I'm curious to know how it performs this function if at all. Just got a T-mobile branded HTC Flyer 3G, trying to pop in a T-mobile sim card from one of the lines on my family plan that has data but all it's doing when I try to open a webpage is load up the mytmobile website. Is this not possible? Do I have to get a seperate data plan that's tablet specific?

i believe we may have screwed ourselves by getting t mobile branded units. i cannot get data to work with mine,either with my phone sim. i did order another sim i plan to activate with the $3/day prepay and see if that works.

AT&T doesn't support voice and SMS services on tablets, I can tell you that much (although T-mobile does, in theory).

Family mobile (walmart) works
Thank you to all the geniuses on this board for all the help.
I promise I have searched and lurked forever, and I fear this is a stupid question, but here's what I THINK I understand:
1) The only way to have tmo wifi calling is on a stock TW T879 rom
2) There isn't a JB stock TW rom for a ROOTED Note
3) I can't quite change my i717 into a NON-rooted T879
Basically I LOVE my Note. However, I MUST have wifi calling at my house because otherwise I have NO service. I also seem to have an issue that if I haven't recently killed tasks and I have under 100m of available memory incoming and outgoing calls have no audio in either direction.
So, do the recent Tmo OTA updates improve the memory affecting calls issue? If so, can I get them on my i717 while still retaining wifi calling?
My phone constantly requests doing the OTA update but it always fails. Even using Kies it fails. I worked with Tmo and they eventually sent me to Samsung, who eventually told me to go to a Best Buy.
I've rooted a few phones, but just barely, and always with a wonderful post from this board as directions.
Again, I'm sorry to waste your time, and I feel like I should be able to figure this one out, but I've failed for a few weeks now, so I'd like to request some help.

Look up GrooveIP on the Play Store. It uses google voice and it integrates itself in the default phone app.

Google Voice isn't a carrier so you're not porting it to them. GV is more like call forwarding.
It is possible to install a tmobile note rom on a i717.

They give you your own entirely seperate voice number to use with Voice.
I use Google voice so when I call someone n don't want them to have my original number they see my gv number works great if u don't want ur girlfriend to see who ur texting if she so happens to see the bill lol

Vonage costs money
T-Mobile Wifi is included in the contract.
It's free to call people.
Whether that's good enough and if voip is acceptable to you (it's not for me because of delay) is a personal decision.
