light bleed for tbolt? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

just wondering if anyone else is also tolerating the unfortunate light bleeding around the bottom half of their phone and above the soft keys. is this an issue with most of the thunderbolts or did i just get a defective model?

Can't really see what your talking about, is it like that for you all the time for you?

I only see it when tilting the phone down at an awkward unusable angle. Don't see anything anytime i've been using the phone normally.

found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12954063&highlight=light+bleed#post12954063 .

My phone has that too, but it really never gets in the way unless like said you're looking at your phone from an already unusable angle.

It's a problem with most thunderbolts and many phones/tablets in general (even the jesuspad isnt immune).
As already mentioned, I dont ever see it unless im intentionally trying to look for it (at an angle).

Have same issue at an extreme angle.

Have same issue only a problem at night. Daytime I don't notice a thing.

like stated in the link posted above, its from the illuminated capacitive buttons at the bottom and not the LCD panel itself.

On my first thunderbolt, i actually had the entire screen rotated by a few degrees and pretty bad bleed from the back lighting of the keys at the bottom. VW overnighted me a new phone and the new one still has the back light bleeding, but as others have said, only at extreme angles.

The screen isn't bleeding. It's just the lighting from the soft keys. I only notice it when I have the phone at a certain angle. No big deal.
This normally happens with any device that has backlight keys, soft or not. My Droid X did the same thing.

i work for verizon and every thunderbolt i've sold hasn't had nearly as much light bleeding as mine. it is a painful thing to sell models that surpass mine haha, getting a new one sent to me though, just hope it's not the same. blast this ocd

Home button too bright?

There is a bright light coming from the home button on my Vibrant. Is this an issue? Does anyone else have this?

Don't know how I can be to tell you the truth... Okay example:
Dark screen and the capacitive buttons are lit, above the HOME button you see a little shine of light, it is coming from the capacitive button. This is my second Vibrant phone(last one the 3g radio wasn't working properly) and the last one also had this issue, I checked the one at the store and it also had this, but it could just be that the shipments that the store got were all faulty of sorts, do you have this issue as well?
Is this a serious problem for you?
No but I am rather curious
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
Picture? Description isn't making a lot of sense.
okay.... I cannot get a picture with a camera at all... but I can try and explain a little more...
You know how the soft keys have lights to light them up in darkness? Well one of the ones from the HOME soft key seems to be showing some sort of light during dark screens outside of the button. Navigate to a black screen, now look above the Home soft key, mines has a little illumination from the soft key itself, I am wondering if it is too bright or something? I only see it during dark black screens but I just want to know if this is an issue.
Oh, I get it .. The screen itself glows, above the Home key? I just tried, max brightness setting and a black screen - no glow on mine. Manufacturing defect of some sort or you have better eyes than me.
Tilt the device so that the head phone jack is facing you, look at the soft keys, if it isn't there I might return mines because it makes things a whole lot different when watching a video

i think he meant theres a backlight leak from the softkey buttons

Angling it like that.. Only a very narrow sliver of light, only visible at a very precise angle. Definitely nothing I would encounter through normal usage, including watching a video.
Just checked the wife's Vibrant, slightly bigger spot of light but still a pretty narrow angle. There's definitely some variation going on here, but neither of ours are visible from normal viewing angles. If yours is interfering with video watching, I'd say that's a defect.
Yeah most likely, I can see mines... I think I just might return it and get a G2 this is my second Vibrant and I really don't want to go through another one, hopefully I can get my money back. Thanks for your help

I have the same thing. It's not that bad, but I know it's there. Doesn't bother me much, but it's there.
I just checked mine as well and there is a very very small spot at a specific angle. It does not cast enough light onto the screen to be noticiable even in the darkest situation.
Curious what symptoms you had on your first Vibrant with 3G. My 3G is horrible. When I had a G1 a few months ago I had much better 3g. Now, even if I get a 3G signal, I either can't surf at all or it is slower than Edge. I have resorted to leaving my phone set to 2G only. I figured it was a problem either in my area or with the Vibrant In general. Your comment makes me wonder if maybe there could be something else at work.
As far as the light on your screen, I can only barely see that when looking from above as described, definitely not any other time. If this is your second phone, it may have been refurbished and not put together exactly correctly.
As far as mine, I think I'm going to go to the tmobile store and compare my 3G to the demo phone they have on display.

I do have huge light leak onto my screen from the buttons. It is most apparent coming from the home button. That one makes a streak straight up when the screen is black. Like a searclight... But, I don't notice it when the screen is drawn. Definitely a manufacturing issue, but not a serious one. I am also considering heading to the G2 when it comes out. Still miss my G1's keyboard even though I give Swype FULL PROPS for a great virtual kb.

[Q] Light leak from capacitive buttons onto screen?

If I look down at my thunderbolt standing in profile mode on kickstand at a sharper angle, I can see the lights for the capacitive buttons. You have to look at a very sharp angle and functionally it doesn't matter, but I just wanted to see if this is a just me thing or common.
As I'm about to take this pic with my old Inc I notice it has it too and I never saw it for a year. Funny what you notice when you're looking hard for problems.
Pic of what I'm talking about:
Mine does the same thing.
Same
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Yeah, its a common "problem", if you even want to call it that. No need to worry, about 80% of TB users have it. There is a thread that shows you how to stop it here somewhere. But you have to dismantle the TB and put silicone on it I believe. Too much work for something that really doesn't matter IMO.
Yeah not a big deal or enough for me to do anything about...got curious. Had read about leaks around buttons themselves and siliconing them, but not sure this is really accessible.
Silicone around the screen is what his referring to. I silicone around my bolt cause I had two light leak dots below my buttons plus it keeps dust from seeping through underneath it. but the light issues you have is a normal thing. Every tbolt I see has one.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Yep that is normal for my TBolt
I don't have the light leak. Weird. *knock-on-wood* My T-Bolt seems to be flawless. I just hope my 15 month-old son doesn't get ahold of it and try to put it in the toaster or VHS player (yes I still have one of those).
If I did have the light leak though, from the pictures, it looksl ike it is only pronounced in pitch-black settings. Not sure if it would bother me.

Screen light leakage from leds

So I have my rezound now and so far setting it up and putting through it's paces and only one thing has me a little miffed and that the leds that light up the capacitive buttons below the screen are leaking up when you change the viewing angle slightly.
It's something I can live with but if I have a dud I'd like a replacement. My incredible s didn't have this issue.
Thanks

Mine does the same thing(so did the one on display at my local Verizon).
It's a bit extreme, but if you open it up, separate the screen from the digitizer, you could put a thin strip of electrical tape in there and that should block out most of it.
I'm not going to go to that extreme but pretty lame that they couldn't fix that.
I wonder if all of these major issues came from the same batch of phones. Mine hasn't had any of the problems, no audio issue, no bootloop, no heat, no light leaking, no dead pixels. When my buddy gets his today I am going to see if he has any issues.
Are you taking about seeing light when you look down on the phone from the top?
To illustrate what I mean..
Lay your phone flat on its back, then stand it so that it the screen is perpendicular to the surface. Now look down on the phone as if you were trying to look into the headphone jack , but direct your eyes to the led soft lights . You should be able to see light.
Make sure the LEDs are on of course.
I'd this is what you mean.. I don't see it as a problem. More like nit picking. We don't use the phone at that viewing angle for anything
Sent from my HTC Rezound
I've owned 2 HTC phones in the past and they both have had light leakage.
I'm learning that some things on phones we just have to accept, because really they aren't that big of a deal
Light leakage on HTC phones is one of them, the other being issues with sAmoled screens such as tint problems. I guess some things are just manufacturing artifacts. Sure they can completely get rid of light leakage, but whatever you won't notice it in a couple weeks anyway. It isn't a defect, just something common with HTC phones.

[Q] Light bleed big deal or not

Hey fellow EVO lovers how's everyone doing, this is my first thread ever so I hope I don't get bashed too hard, anyways so my issue is im having light bleed from the home button and I know its a common problem, my question is what are you guys doing about it exchanging the phone or just dealing with it? I know its not a big deal and doesn't affect performance but its been bugging me lately, is there any mod to dim the backlight. I really don't want to exchange phone since this is my second one first one had lifted screen, also does light bleed get worse over time and does it affect battery life at all, thanks for any input and yes I'm ready to get flamed
Does it bother you? If so, get it replaced. If not, don't worry about it.
I had the same problem but it was only noticeable in a dark room with a black background... I changed only cuz I have ocd when it comes to things like that.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Yeah, I have it, but I only notice at night, when I first open my Kindle app (black background). I am just going to ignore it, it's such a minor thing.
I think I'm going to go ahead and keep it, its really not a big problem and. Is only noticeable at night on a dark back ground, I just wanted to make sure it doesn't get worse over time or effect battery life, thanks for the input guys
Yea I have that problem also, but as soon I put a less bright background on the cell phone I haven't noticed it
Light bleed? What is this light bleed you speak of?
I got my phone last night and see no lightbleed at all. Even at full brightness in a dark room there is no light bleed in the slightest. There is a TAD bit of light barely coming out where the camera button is....but if that is what you're talking about, then you need to get a life.
EDIT: Oh, I see it near the capacitive buttons... You barely can see it, unless your brightness is maxed and are on a black screen. Big deal...the screen is still 100x better than that pentile SIII screen.

That is most likely not what he is talking about. The common light bleed is two white streaks of light that shoot up from the home button. It is more than what you described.
My phone had slight light bleed from the day I got it... Which was never a big deal. For some reason it is getting worse, I can see it in the daytime sometimes. Would this be covered under sprint I insurance, deductible free?

Yes that is what I am talking about I get 2 streaks of light coming from the home bottom on mine it's only noticeable on low brightness with a dark background, its not really a big deal I only notice it at night.
As far as sprint insurance it should be covered but I do believe you will have to pay deductible unless you are within the 14 day return period in which case they will replace it for free
My main concern was to make sure battery life wasn't affected by the light bleed because I'm getting way less battery life with this EVO than I did with my first evo, I'm getting about 12 hours now compared to around 20 before running same Rom,settings, apps

I'd say if it is affecting performance, functionality, or battery life, it is worth replacing. If none of the above are affected, then I think the headache of going through replacing it would be worse than the problem itself. At the end of the day it is up to you.

Damn it. I just noticed that my phone has this, as well. Don't know that I want to have it replaced as everything else (even those issues that the majority seem to have), so far, is working perfect on this device.
Will Sprint replace with no questions asked for this reason? Obviously, if I decided to, I would have to relock and return to stock, right?

What hardware issues are you experiencing?

There seems to be a number of people raising certain hardware issue problems. I don't know about you, however I don't seem to have any issues at all here.
Current Issues
Light Bleed
Back Cover Flex
Warped Back
No issues here!
Vote in the poll!
Would be nice to know which possible batch you got yours from.
Did you order it on launch day or have you ordered it since it's come back into stock?
Which country have you ordered it from?
Have you had to RMA ones before?
I have no issues at all. There is a minor amount of light bleed around the bottom edge (landscape with camera at top)but this is no issue as it only affects the nav bar, and is totally invisible when set to lowest brightness setting where I tend to use the tablet . I love this thing.
If I turn the brightness up full, I have the weeniest bit of light bleed on the bottom right corner but you have to look hard to see it.
Everything else is fine
Possible Touchscreen/Multi-Touch issue?
Still awaiting for others to leave some feedback Only takes about a minute or two to test
Some of these are not a hardware issue but a chassis issue. Hardware is the components inside the tablet.
I ordered on the 13th and no issues to report.

Minor technicality.
Minor light bleed, non factor. Extremely pleased with this tab!
Minor light bleed in lower right like everyone else, which I wouldn't have noticed if not for reading the forums!
My LED is not working, our art last I can't make it work. Doesn't really bother me as in my previous tablet (a BlackBerry playbook) I turned out off anyway.

Nothing at all there could possibly be light bleed, but I have not dine a test, I am just using it and in terms if uses, there is nothing noticeable

So far as I'm concerned, hardware is anything physical, so to me the chassis falls under this. Hardware is physical components, software is well, software.
Part of the 2nd batch (restocked 11/20).
Only minor light bleed.
Alright I ordered another one due to some light bleed that is visible on almost all automatic brightness levels. I sure hope I don't get one that's worse. charging cable I got doesn't work either so that also pushed me to RMA it.
Sometimes when holding the Nexus 10 with one hand on either side, I frightening notice the side speakers slightly detach. I only noticed this three times before I promptly adjusted the way I hold it till I get a case with sufficient protection.

Light bleed. And not a hardware issue but a lot of freezing....
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
I haven't seen anyone else mention this anywhere, but the backlight makes a really annoying high-pitched whine whenever it's turned on, and the pitch/tone changes with brightness. From what I've read it could be a choke coil squealing but I didn't think something like this would have them large enough to make noise.

I maxed out my brightness and I couldn't hear a thing, however I did notice that my plasma makes a high pitched whine.
Multi touch all good here when using the app that was posted; tried several different touches to be sure.
Light bleed in the bottom right, pretty minor though. Everything else is solid & working though.
As for the back strip flexing, The clips that keep it secured are tiny, so it doesn't surprise me that that is an issue for some... makes me wonder how things will go once the covers that swap out the back strip are released...

Light bleed, but the most annoying one is that the front and back camera both are not working. Doesnt anyone else have this problem?

I get this issue sometimes on my Galaxy Nexus when 3rd party camera apps or apps that use the light are in use. The camera on my n10 works okay at least.
I guess I got extremely lucky. Ordered the minute it first become available (Tuesday, delivered Friday) and zero issues.
No reboots, freezes, laggieness, light bleed, back flex, dust, etc..... nothing, everything has been great.
Not usually this lucky....so I am extremely pleased
