Any one-click widget to turn mobile data on/off? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've only had my Galaxy S2 a few days and I absolutely love it, an amazing beast of a phone.
The only annoyance for me is the inability to easily switch on/off mobile data. Maybe I was spoilt coming from the Desire where Sense had an excellent widget that allowed you to turn it on and off straight from the homescreen, but I haven't been able to find a similar option for the S2. I've tried a variety of widgets (Beautiful Widgets, Switch Pro, Extended Control, Power control) but all of them have some flaws, they either don't work at all or they are really just links to the settings page.
On top of that, every time you check the setting to turn on the mobile data, I get that annoying pop-up telling me that it might cost me money to use this!
Love the phone but would love a way to turn on mobile data with one click. Has anyone found a way to do this?

no widget necessary. you can turn data off from anywhere on the phone. just hold down the power button and one of the options will be to turn data off.

cool. I didn't realize this was an option. Cheers.

And if you want a widget JuiceDefender has one and saves you battery as well

Found a simple widget that does what Sense did for Desire
I was also spoiled by the Desire and Sense with its on/off widget... but for SGS2, I managed to find one that works!
APN OnOff, it is very similar to the one in Sense. Used it for a few hours and seem to be doing a fine job AND IT IS FREE! Enjoy

Uh, I would not recommend APN OnOff. It kind of creates another APN entry that might muck around with your APN settings. If you are already rooted, try Widgetsoid and the root setting.

Tasker can create such a widget for you also, in addition to doing pretty much anything else you can think of when it comes to an Android phone...

widgetsoid can do this and is free. It's a little complicated to set up - think of it as a widget creation framework, but if you can get the hang of it, it can be very powerful!

screen off widget

hey all
I am looking for a widget that can simply turn the screen off, I press and the screen goes off.
I have searched but cant find anything that works
Thanks
I have seen a couple of apps in my travels go have a look in the android development I'm sure an xda member cooked one up a few weeks back, and from what i remember android does not switch off straight away like WM does it has a delay built in
I was looking for one of these some months ago.
I was told that there wasnt one which stopped the screen straight away, however I found on. UNFORTUNATELY, I can't find it again. (I am on my third Streak)
It wasn't badged as a screen off, but it was a single widget which locked the device (aka turned off the screen, as if you had pressed the power button)
I would love to find it again!
Screen off
http://android.konreu.com/applications/screen-off/
I don't see the point myself, why don't you just hit the power button
Yyhat link doesnt work no item found, the power button is in a weird spot for my liking and since i use no lock and open with th volume button
Then why don't you do a google search for an android app called 'scren off'

Pick up your android phone and go to somewhere called the 'android marketplace' you may even have an app already installed for that so no need to search for that thank goodness.
In the search bar enter 'sreen off' it should be at the top of the list
i have a question, maybe this is android related, maybe streak, not sure.
I come from WM6.5 background, so forgive me if this is a 'duh' question:
when I am listening to music, or recording or, anything really, if the screen turns off, it shuts the whole phone down. including wifi (loses connection)
is there a way to have the screen dim/off to save battery, but still be active.
biggest is music/recording. when I am recording something (meeting, etc) I have to force the screen to stay on in order for it to continue recording. same thing goes for uploading to youtube - i have to keep the screen on for it to continue it's connection.
Am I missing something??
Thanks for the help
try an app called "free power widget"
you can adjust the screen timeout so it is short or long
you can easily adjust screen brightness
you can adjust the wifi lock and a bunch of other settings.

There's something wrong with your connection, (that's your internet one, not the one within your head the connects your lobes together, especially the lobe containing common sense)
What you could do to stop you from losing your Wi-Fi connection when in sleep mode is try going into Settings -> Wireless controls -> Wi-Fi settings -> press menu button then Advanced -> then select Wi-Fi sleep policy and change the option to Never. This should I think keep Wi-Fi active when your screen is off (stops of the phone from switching to mobile data and by default is set to do so when the screen is off).

I am not an idiot
Coming from Windows Mobile, a SIMPLE power off app is hard to find on Android. I had one on my WM Touch Pro2 on my homescreen- simple tab and off.
Over the months of trying to find a simple FREE app- this is what I have so far encountered.
Screen Off .99 and Power Off .99- are available. But due to a so call security reason for Android, it will not power off the phone immediately- screen is off- but you can see the hardware lights on. I found another tip that you will have to modify an API to do so.
Yes, many, many, many, Google searches and this is what i found.
You can try a widget called Extended Controls. They are awesome and include a screen off widget, I use it all the time to turn my screen off.
Widgetsoid offers a hugely customisable power control widget which includes a screen lock button. It's working brilliantly for me on o2 2.2!

[Q] Things that suck about the Galaxy S II - Help me resolve

I love my SGSII, but some things just plain suck though. Does anyone know of solutions to the following:
Bluetooth
Poor A2DP quality (low bitpool)
Gets hot and battery drain after turning the car stereo off.
Often doesn't respond to forward/back controls.
Lockscreen
I'd much rather just have the stock Google lockscreen. Anyone know how to restore this?
Call answer slider
These are ugly and not very smoothly animated. Anyone know a way to replace these with stock or otherwise?
Apps missing from Market on KE7
I've noticed a few of these. It finds Samsung-specific apps instead.
Swipe to dismiss notifications
I guess this is just a useful cyanogen feature that I miss.
No silent state
I want 'ring and vibrate', 'vibrate only' and 'totally silent' ring modes on volume button like Cyanogen, or in the notification drop down. As it is, I only have everything or vibrate only. It's very annoying having to go into the menus or use an ugly widget.
Change what double-tapping the home button does
Currently goes to Vlingo, which is awful. It could do something useful
The UI still has loads of poor design elements left over from the SGS
Most notably, words that don't fit in boxes and fall onto 2 lines as below (regardless of font used)
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",

}
Also, loading bars often overlap other text and elements. It looks sloppy. Why do Samsung think this is an improvement over stock?
The Gallery app has two menus to send things
Ways to share pictures is now split between 'send via' and 'share via'. This is completely unnecessary. Why would Samsung do this? Can I install the stock gallery app?

I use widgetlocker to bypass the stock lockscreen. There is a setting in widgetlocker which allows you to bypass your stock lockscreen so when you "slide to unlock" it goes straight to your homescreen. Plus you can add widgets, etc. which is a very nice feature.
coming from the iPhone (though liking the GS2 very much) I find it annoying how incosistent the UI is.
To share a picture from the browser is a completely different action than sharing something from the gallery...
I've got a higher bitpool lib uploaded... Wanna try it?

wow is that bad, i never knew these types of things existed. i just thought it was identical to AOSP code based ROMs. samsung should really feel silly for UI issues like that. particularly because they are stock elements gone awry allegedly due to samsung's custom skin of the device. they broke stock!
Yes it's very sloppy. All of these were present on the first Galaxy S. Either fix thhem, or put it back to stock!
More issues:
Setting to 'power saver mode' disables sync. Returning to normal mode doesn't re-enable it.
How the feel do I snooze the alarm?
Network data stops working, with the upload arrow stuck on but no download.
You can set the snooze settings under advanced settings when you create or edit an alarm. Tab on snooze and set the snooze timeout and the number of times you are allowed to snooze.

Well, the battery draining in less then half a day is not properly a minor inconvenience, given that it's a mobile device. IMHO.
Even the sound quality over bluetooth is a major letdown for me, to be true. I am coming from an Iphone4 whose BT sound quality was great and I'm pretty disappointed.

Drop-Down Settings

Coming from my OG Evo and Deck's ROM, I'm really missing the drop-down settings toggles on this phone. It's funny, too: I swore I'd never go back to Sense after I finally got rid of it for AOSP back in the Vaelpak days, but things are so smooth and flawless with the LTE that I actually have no desire to switch to anything else at the moment (I've only had the phone for a week, though).
Except for the toggles! I'm constantly finding myself flipping down the notification menu looking for a sound profile switcher or a 5-way brightness control or a WiFi toggle or even quick access to airplane mode. I know there are widgets available to partially cover this, but those aren't accessible from within other apps.
End communication.

Dont worry this will all come in due time. I think viper rom has some toggles already.
Well now it's just one more step... You just gotta press settings. I'm sure in due time a developer will create a rom with these settings.

There are certain features that are very important to me like being able to ready message on lock screen .. I'm very dissapointed that this phone does not have that option

I said the same thing. People argued with me and said the G2 didn't have that ability, but it certainly did. In the message/notification settings.
I really want that, option, as well as call reject, a native flashlight app, LG browser and task app(Verizon sucks), the ability to sync my Facebook calendar with LGs. There a ton of little things I'm missing

To read messages on the lock screen just get Dashclock widget and Dashnotifier extension. (may not even need the dashnotifier, can't remember for sure but I have both) and put the widget on your lockscreen in place of the clock,
See that's the awesome thing about Android is if you don't like something about your phone or want a certain feature.... Then change it! Between Apps and Xposed modules you can make a really nice stock ROM with pretty much anything you could ask for. Once we get the bootloader unlocked and start getting custom ROMs, forget about it, this thing is going to be a BEAST!

Xposed has the xblast module that has lockscreen notifications and lockscreen flash in it but it crashes sometimes so I use floatify and I love it. For flash light I use the g3 tweaksbox by assigning one of the volume buttons in "miscellaneous tweaks" when the screen is off.

[Q] Screen lock timeout and force lock with button

I would like to know if there is a way to force user authentication (password, or fingerprint, etc) by pressing a button.
What i mean is that on a blackberry you can press the 'K' key to lock the screen and force the user to have to put in the password to unlock the phone. With Android it seems like the only option is to set it to lock immediately b/c if it is set to anything other than that, hitting the power button will just turn off the screen but not Lock it until that setting reaches the time you set for the lock to occur.
I assume it is not built in and i will need to download an app.
Thanks
Uhh.. Set it to lock immediately?

That is not what I'm asking! I would like the ability to keep the screen off without it locking right away but have the ability to lock with the power button. There are apps out there but it does not appear there is an option to do this natively.
Oh... But why, I'm curious.
Very simple, i don't want to have to keep scanning my fingerprint when my phone is being charged on wireless charger after the screen times out. It is very convenient to lock the phone with a simple press of a button like blackberry. If you treat it like a business phone you will understand, but I'm coming from a blackberry so it is a very useful feature for me.

That is not the issue. Plus why would I want the screen on all the time. The problem is that the feature exists. However for what ever reason ATT disabled the option and lumped it together with turn off screen immediately. If i can figure out which CSC will turn this on it would be great but I don't know if it is a CSC option

I gave you a solution based on what you said you wanted: " i don't want to have to keep scanning my fingerprint when my phone is being charged on wireless charger after the screen times out."
Im sorry if its not exactly what you were looking for, but it IS a solution.
I think the two things you want are mutually exclusive. The only way to have what you need is use smart unlock. Otherwise, the phone either locks or it doesn't.

I never stated I want the screen on all the time. I simply want the option to lock at will using the power button. I appreciate the suggestion but it is not what I asked for and I'm familiar with the development options.
Still would be nice if there is a way to turn this on via a CSC option. still digging

Not exactly, this feature exists, however it is disabled on ATT phones. Looking for a way to enable this via CSC but it may not be possible.
