Kies vs ota - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Coming from the iPhone, I plan to pick up a unlocked gs2 in the states. I currently only have a iMac so I cannot use kies to upgrade firmware. For unlocked, unbranded phones do all firmware updates in kies eventually come ota? What is the delay between a firmware update showing up in kies and than becoming available ota? Thanks for any info.

Never seen SGS 1 with OTA upgrade .

Man kies the worst ever software {Samsung anyhow are number 1 in crap softwares}
OTA is what you get in N1,Nexus S & other bunch of Android devices to upgrade your phone software. No need of connecting it to any pc or other softeare to upgrade your softeare.
Always prefer OTA for softeare updates

I wouldn't expect any FOTA updates, at least not soon.
I just have a bootcamp partition with Windows XP and use it for things like that.
You can use your friend's PC

This last update was almost 500mb, which makes it ok that I had to use sucky kies.

[Q] If you flash your phone, can you receive OTA updates?

If I wanted to receive OTA updates with my i9100 and have flashed a stock rom (KI3) on it, does anyone know if it will notify me? KIES does not check for me anymore since the firmware is "not official" which I thought it was, but I would like to know if I could flash it to an earlier version and receive an update OTA. I have had a few issues with my device every time I flash it which continues to annoy me. Such as clearing data of certain apps to get them to work properly. I would rather not clear the data on my phone after every update and would like to just wait for new releases patiently. Anyone have a clue if this will work before I waste my time?
You will not revealed ota updates unless you are on the correct stock rom, and if kies doesn't see it as stick I really don't think you will gt ota.
Also ota is only avaliable on a limited number of carriers/regions.

My phone is unlocked and I have received them before. After the KIES update it does not recognize my phone now. I have heard that even if I go back to a previous firmware then it won't recognize it still. I got the firmware from Intratech's thread and they are all official releases, I am unsure why KIES says it is not the official firmware.
Has no one else tried this? It seems like something someone would have done. I don't want to use KIES anymore, but I would really like to know if I can start updating via OTA instead of flashing new firmwares that require me to clear data on the majority of my apps to get them to work properly.
OTA updates and how they work are not something we have any information for .
OTA will probably look at he same codes as Kies to update . Wrong codes from firmware = no update .
Plus neither will update if no update from the provider on the server .

I also have a SGS2 with a flashed ROM (is an original 2.3.4 unbranded, but is not the one which came with the phone) and also my phone is ROOTed.
Could that be why I also cannot use Samsung Dive services?

[Q] My SGS III is unable to update either OTA or via KIES

Mine is already rooted with CWM and Rooted. Im currently on XXALE9 Stock. Unfortunately there is no response from Software Update on the phone and KIES is saying that Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies.
I heard from another forum site (Non-XDA) that it has something to do with the phone being rooted. I would like to know if this is true. As much as possible I am trying to avoid flashing via Odin.
Is there any possible fix for this?
As most of you might ask, the reason I am asking this is that I would like to officially get the updates for my phone. I am after those updates because those who received them had the Overheating/Warming issue with the phone fixed.
Thankyou very much!
reflash stock rom.
Question has to be has your individual phone actually got an official update .
No update no download via Kies or OTA .

OTA updates and the region thing

hi guys, first let me say i'm a former GS2 owner and used to flash all the latest official OS using odin
since i got my GS3, i said i will update via official otas and skip the flashing via odin.
i love updates and hate being left behind, and i now there is a new update [mine has the LF2] for my unbranded-unlocked i9300 and i check on mine 3 times a day and nothing comes via ota.
the main reason i got the unbranded-unlocked-international version was to get updates asap.
i know otas gets released by regions, and thats a think i really need to understand and i need your help on that, thanks...
I think LFB is a Kies update and LF2 was just an incremental OTA update. Even though my phone has the LF2 OTA update, when I plug it into Kies and hit update, it reports I am using LF1.

So you wait and you wait and you wait .

Nothing in recent updates worthwhile .

Only help for OTA is Samsung .
All XDA will tell you is to flash stock rom via Odin .
You could use CHECKFUS to double check the actual update status for your phone .

Try the following -
Connect the phone to kies via usb.
In case an update is available, kies will notify you. Now dont click update via kiew.
Disconnect the phone from usb and check for OTA update in the phone.
My phone does not show any OTA updates even if there is an update. I always need to first connect it to kies and once kies detects an update , the phone finds the update via OTA.

UK Orange OTA Update Today

Hi,
Has anyone on Orange in the UK updated to the latest firmware via Kies?
I've just plugged my phone in to Kies and seen the update, and I wanna know if this is what I hope it is... the JELLY BEAN UPDATE!!!
I doubt it, as I've seen nothing online to suggest anyone has it yet.
Let me know people! Thanks for your help!
Without evidence in a build number or Android version its just another old old update .
Orange first never usually months behind .

There is no chance whatsoever that it is Jellybean, Jellybean will be out most likely last of all UK networks for Orange.... the first phone to get the update will be the UK unbranded update.
This update is probably LG8 or LH1....
I've attached a screen print of the message I get in Kies. Not sure if this is the "build number" your referring to. I won't get a version number till I update. I'm holding fire on that till I know it's necessary.

Last! Damn Orange.
When the unbranded update comes out, is there any way to trick Kies into giving me that? If I sim unlock or something?

not kies no, but you could use ODIN, you download the file from a link that will be posted on here open ODIN and plug in your phone and press start (not exactly the full process but just to tell you how simple it would be).
You don't need root or anything like that to do this, you could also use the same process to flash back to an Orange Rom if you needed to in the future.
LG very old firmware ..
Use CHECKFUS to download your original current firmware and save it can be flashed via Odin in the future if problems .

Thanks, I've used Odin before, but just to root a few S2s and my S3. Will keep an eye out for that unbranded update.
Funnily enough I just installed the LG1 radio on my GF's Orange phone last night as I had issues using the LFB Firmware.

Vervizon S4. On MI1,..NEED MJ7. Strange Update. Pls Read.

Okay so I have a regular stock Verizon Samsung Galaxy s4 . I've been using it with my T-Mobile Service & SIM Card in the phone. Works quite Perfect. The original baseband firmware version that I had in my phone was: ME7. I heard that there was an update to "MJ7" that was rolling out, updating the firmware in the phone to android 4.3, along with unlocking some other cool device capabilities such as the other LTE and AWS bands. So naturally I downloaded the Samsung KIES program for my PC in order so I could connect my phone and get the firmware upgrade. Upon connecting my phone Samsung KIES did indeed say that there was a new version available for download that would upgrade my phone to the MJ7 version. I decided backup my phone first before performing the upgrade. After doing so the next day I connected my phone to my computer and opened the KIES program, and it told me that time that the new firmware version available for my phone was MI1!?!? Not MJ7 like it said the day before. I thought that was a bit strange but then I thought that maybe I had to upgrade to that version before I could upgrade to the "MJ7". I allowed it to upgrade my phone to MI1. After it upgraded I went back and checked for another update and now it is telling me that I have the most current firmware version in my phone..."MI1". I rebooted my phone and PC several times and checked for updates and it still hasn't daid that MJ7 was available! What have I done to you? Did I do something wrong? Why did Samsung Kies initially tell me that MJ7 was available but now it will not anymore, after updating to MI1 ( the version that it told me was the most current release) this all happened on this past saturday and sunday. I would definitely appreciate any help whatsoever in uncovering this firmware update mystery, and the ability to update my phone to firmware version MJ7. Not only do I want the Android 4.3 but since I am using this phone on tmobile it will give me extra functionality to use the LTE BANDS on GSM instead of just 3G or H+. Thanks in advance to all!

I read something about Samsung pulling the 4.3 update for some carriers... due to an issue with the Wi-Fi maybe? It may have shown up on Kies, then been pulled. I'm sure it will be back once they get the issues sorted out. Or you could possibly look for an update.zip on here and manually do the update yourself
