How about HTC Flyer for movie playback? - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

How about HTC Flyer for movie playback?
So finally we see the first HTC tablet on the market, the HTC Flyer a new version of HTC Sense with dual-pane windows for things like video, contacts and mail. The 7.7” HTC tablet looks slick on the outside- this is not surprising, since HTC has a good track record when it comes to user-interface design。
Despite developing tablets is a big gamble for the world’s smartphone manufacturers this year, HTC is stepping further out on a limb with a tablet that is considerably different from the rest. Rather than taking the safe and perhaps cheap route of using Google’s new Honeycomb tablet operating system, HTC has redeveloped its Sense user experience for a larger tablet display to overlay the latest Android smartphone system, Gingerbread.
What we are interested in is HD video playback on HTC Flyer since its official site said this tablet would perform great in visual and acoustical experience.Impressed with the multimedia experience on HTC Flyer,i wonder how about playing HD movies on HTC Flyer? How to put my Blu-ray movies on HTC Flyer for playback ? What'sthe best format for HTC Flyer ?Follow this short guide to quickly convert Blu-rays to HTC Flyer supported format and watch Blu-ray/DVD movies on HTC Player. You can easily download Blu-rays to HTC Flyer Converter and try it out by yourself.

News article: 2/21/11 - HTC Snags OnLive for Tablet Video Games

Ever heard of a Tablet Gamer? You probably will in the second quarter of this year. HTC has now stepped up to the plate of the tablet industry with its newly unveiled HTC Flyer.
According to ZDNet, the Flyer was revealed at the Mobile World Congress on the 15th of February, boasting a 7-inch screen, 32GB storage, a camera on both the front and the back, and, of course, Wi-Fi capability.....
Read more at - http://onlivefans.com/news/htc-snags-onlive-for-tablet-video-games/168/
It requires at least 3 Mbits per second broadband to play the games, which is currently impossible in my country.
Hd2 desire s build xda app.
I'm currently thinking of getting a flyer and having something like this could be really cool. But I wonder if the 1.5 ghz single-core will be able to handle the job. Or will it be fine given the service is streaming ?
Today I've checked htc website, they removed every thing about OnLive, you cannot find anything about it any more, even there is nothing on manual. I guess its gone. So sad
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
OnLive does not appear to be present on the Flyer. There is no app, no mention in the manual, nothing.
I think it will come back. They didn't make an investment for nothing. Hopefully they are working on optimizing it. But it looked fine back in MWC, and the service works well using the OnLive Gaming Console and on my Macbook Air.
But I hate the fact they won't mention it at all in the marketing or through their Twitter account.

[Q] How is having both the flyer and sensation together?

I feel like since the screen on the sensation is so big and the flyer isn't that much bigger, the sensation won't be too useful.
I actually have both the Flyer and a Desire HD as (screen size is the same as the Sensation) as well as a 10" tablet, both have their different uses, the Flyer is mostly dedicated to work (and some play), the DHD is used mostly to communicate, SMS, Calls, some email and my 10 inches is used for playing games and movies.
It's up to you how you would prioritize your device usage, but this setup is what I'm comfortable with... oh... and 4.3" is much, MUCH smaller than 7"
ooh ic. Thanks for the reply
I was wondering cuz I used to have an iPad and got a flyer while I sent my sensation into htc for repair
all I need my tablet is for doing work like taking notes and typing on the go
so it would probably be good for my uses? Since you use ur flyer for work and that's all I need it for.
do you think it would be good for me?
htc flyer for school notes and on the go document editing
htc sensation for texting calling google+ and email
I have both and they are completely different. Huge difference i screen size as kentamayo says. But I DO like the high res and large size screen on the Sensation for those moments when it is inconvenient (or imprudent) to take out the Flyer. Both are good for games. Flyer is better for video, work, reading, and obviously note taking. Flyer is better for anything which requires the loudspeaker but the Sensation is better for taking pics and videos. And no matter how much more comfortable it might be for some to type on the Flyer a phone is still more convenient for firing off a quick text in the middle of the street (well, it also depends just exactly where you're carrying your Flyer).
Honestly for me they are a good match. Hopefully they are for you too (and if you use it the scribe pen can't be beat on the Flyer).
Agree. A phone and a tablet are totally different.
thanks guys
so now i have both the sensation and the flyer together and love them working together!
While the Sensation and Flyer are very similar, I can't help but feel that you may as well have asked, do I need a phone (smart or otherwise) if I have a tablet.
I have an Xperia Arc and my partner has a HTC Sensation and we have a Flyer that we share. The Flyer is great for reading books on (I can on the phones but, is better on the tablet obviously, 7" screen makes a huge difference) and for writing blog posts. Again I can do that on my phone but, is more hassle than it's worth but, I've done some blogging on the Flyer and I actually find it easier to do that on the Flyer than the computer. Although that said, both times I had the laptop in front of me with the stories opened I needed to write.
The Flyer and Sensation go great together, a perfect combo . Also, with Dropbox/evernote you can easily swap files/notes - and then have them on your computer too .
Hi Everybody,
I'm a Hong Kong guy who loves HTC devices. (Especially HTC Sense)
I totally agree with QuBic! I've just bought both sensation & flyer, and I enjoying them so much.
Let me share about how I'm using them currently.
Major function uses on Sensation
Phone calls, SMS, WhatApp, reading emails, reading Facebook updates, Sport Tracking, Projects/Task reminder, Music Player, Radio player and some general enquiry apps.
Major function uses on Flyer
Taking notes during meeting or lesson (by text, sound, photo or video), compose or reply emails, plan and organize projects, tasks and personal matters, reading news, books, documents and comics, internet browning, video player, games......etc.

Lenovo Tablet looks nice...Come on HTC step it up!!!

I really love my Flyer and think it is a great size. But If HTC doesn't step up soon I might have to get this and sell my flyer.
I slowly cry and tear as I watch this video. This is what the flyer should have been like.

The price can't be beat either. Only problem I have is that I want a smaller tablet.

oh my god that is awesome..
there is a quick sketching video with htc flyer on youtube too. I'm not really impress with lenovo tablet.
I do not really trust the build quality of Lenovo. And I prefer a portable device. Flyer with Honeycomb will fulfill my dream tablet (at least for sometime). The only thing I would like to improve in Flyer is the weight and battery.

Advice on multiple Android platforms.

I know this has nothing to do with the Evo 3D, but I saw no section dedicated for this topic. Also I've grown attached to this area of the forum.
I just purchased a Logitech Revue for $79.99. So far.....what a piece of ****! I have a PC, a PS3, a HP Touchpad, and an HTC Evo 3D. Am I just tech spoiled and expecting too much from this device? Is it worth holding on to, or should I return it? Any advice is appreciated.

You must have been expecting alot. GoogleTV is ok. At least the honeycomb upgrade improved its functionality. I have the sony googletv that comes with the blueray player. I like that it adds some functionality to my tv. During the holiday rerun season I found a lot of programs that I wouldn't have watched otherwise. Some of the apps are ok, and having netflix and browser capabilities on my family room tv are nice too.
Interesting, I was thinking of getting one...

I was thinking it was a bit of over kill to have purchased it since my media room is chock full of devices and entertainment that already provide more than what the revue does. Would you suggest returning it? Worst case scenario is installing it in the living room and having my son break it because SpongeBob won't play.

Apparently there are big things in store for GoogleTV at CES this year. I wouldn't hold my breath but if you bought it already might as well keep it. :|
I would keep it just in case. It could be worth holding on to.
Hello,
I must confess that I am a self proclaimed Android Nutcase. I currently have (active and in use) a HTC EVO 3D, Logitech Revue, ASUS Transformer, HTC Thunderbolt, and a Viewsonic gTablet. I will exclude the Sony LiveView as it barely works.
Case and point, every one of these devices serves a purpose and does it well.
Logitech Review - Lets think of this as a smart TV, Its great for Netflix and Youtube. I really dont use it for anything more. It would be nice if it had a slingbox style feature but I am not holding my breath for it any time soon. It would also be cool if I can receive notifications on it (Google Voice, Email, etc)
HTC EVO 3D - This is my daily driver, I use it to manage my life. It is either running my own modded CyanogenMod 7 build or the Everolv ICS Preview (Depends on how I feel today).
ASUS Transformer - This is my 2nd brain, I often use it more then my laptop and computer (my laptop is in for repairs anyway). Its rooted and running a modded Honeycomb Build)
HTC Thunderbolt - I needs me some LTE Love (when Verizon is not having issues however). Its my work phone however I normally just use the EVO for my exchange. Its rooted with a sense based ROM.
Viewsonic gTablet - This is really a poor example on how an Android Tablet should have been launched. It had a really bad Viewsonic Skin that made it close to unusable. Thankfully it is VERY hackable and nearly Unbrickable thanks to NVFlash. Currently its running a honeycomb port and is at my desk with a 24-7 live view of a server monitoring system.
Android in general makes it easy to have multiple devices and allows them to share information between them

FYI GTV has a plugin now for slingplayer just saying... go to the splotlight app then go to all, at the bottom you'll see a link for slingplayer...

That's how I use my devices too. Android has made it beautifully fluid to hop from phone, tablet, pc, etc. The Logitech Revue seems to add extra steps to access simple things like GMail. The streaming aspect of it is indeed neat, but i can just as easily do the same with my other gadgets.
Thanks for the advice guys, as always it is much appreciated. I'll hold on to it since I'm within the return period and they might surprise us with some new features.

I want to get Google TV too. But at its current state it doesn't do anything that my ps3, Xbox, media server, iPad, galaxy nexus won't do. I'm hoping some improvements add functionality to it.

Questions about Flyer - general and 3G (T-Mobile)

Interested in the device, but have three quick questions:
-Any way to use it for voice calls with Honeycomb? I know it's possible with Honeycomb in general based off the Galaxy Tab 7.7, and I've seen guides to enable voice calls in Gingerbread.
-What's the cheapest place to get a 3G one? All I see is $500+ while the Wifi-only version is literally as much as half the price in comparison
-How's the Flyer fare with on-device HD (720p or higher) videos? My G2 lags quite a bit, and I'm not sure if the specs on the Flyer are honestly that much better still being single-core and all.
Thanks!

If you unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery, you can run LeeDroid HC and it has full voice calling. The Flyer is a little choppy with HD playback but some video players make it better with software acceleration. Plus with ICS there will be hardware acceleration which will help.

Thanks. Any idea where to pick up a 3G Flyer for T-Mobile for closer to $400 (or less)? It's kind of a lot considering there's newer/faster 7" tablets out for about the same price, especially when the pen isn't always included.

Humm, no, not choppy at all ... IF you do the same as any device and give it what it needs.
the 7 inch LCD display @1024x600 pixels is quite comfortable . In terms of videos, Flyer supports the usual formats 3GP, MPEG4, WMV, DivX, XviD and AVI. the native video player which quite smoothly plays 720p HD video. Additional Adobe Flash Player support also makes watching Flash videos fun. Video playback is smooth and jitter-free on the native player as well as with other video player apps such as RockPlayer and MoboPlayer. If you use one of the native formats. Feed it something difference and you have to use software playback vs. hardware. Then it can get choppy just as any other device on the market will.
Flyer comes with a Dolby Mobile chip and SRS Surround sound.

Good to know.
Now I hate to beat a dead horse here, but...does anybody know a cheap place to get the 3G/T-Mobile version? Prices seem to be slowly falling, but it's still usually at least $450, which is quite a bit for a single-core tablet nowadays...
Another question, since I'm finding it more difficult to find the 3G Flyer under $500 now...is the Mediapad/Springboard an acceptable alternative? I recently found out it too supports T-Mobile USA for GSM voice/text and data, and I can get one for around $300 off-contract - and the higher resolution screen, dual-core processor, and lighter weight are all nice...but the Scribe pen and the accessories/support for the Flyer make it a tough decision...

As the other guy said, it's not that cheap...USA Expansys, on the other hand, has it for $425, which I think I'll go with unless I can find a good deal on eBay (assuming Expansys doesn't go out of stock by the time I get the money for it).
Anyway, are there any other sites like Expansys that would have it? I found out that YesAsia has one for $425 + $30 shipping, so that's an option if Expansys goes out of stock.
I just looked on amazon and they are selling the Evo View for $293.00.
So check that out.

That would require a Sprint plan to use and a separate number - I'm looking to use my current T-Mobile service and not pay extra to use it on the Flyer.
