Info: PowerGorilla & Transformer - Eee Pad Transformer Accessories

Hi everyone, not sure if this will be of any interest to you, but I have a powergorilla and no dock yet, so would be good to be able to use the 18,000mAh battery in the Powergorilla to charge up the Transformer.
As the transformer draws 1.2v from the power supply, using the usb port on the power gorilla would deliver the same charge you'd get from a standard USB port (charging only when the screen is off). However, the device does also have a variable voltage DC output.
I spoke to PowerTraveller to see if they do any kind of accessory and they do a connector called the Gorilla Pad for the ipad that connects to the dc out port, and outputs to a usb port. You set the powergorilla on to 8.4v mode, and then the Gorilla Pad reduces the voltage down to 5v, but keeps the higher amperage that the powergorilla delivers over 8.4v.
They are sending me one out for free, and all they ask is that I test it for them and let them know if it works!
I did mention I'm a member of this forum too, and said I'd post details here, so here you go! I love my PowerGorilla, I took it camping and it charged my iphone 4 more than 5 times, and still wasn't flat, so it'd be nice to get it working for the transformer too! Between the battery in the tablet, the battery in the dock and the PowerGorilla, I should have more than enough juice to play with my tablet as much as I like over the course of a 3 day camping trip!
Thought this info might be useful to some.

Looking forward to the results of this test. I have some Xpal XP8000's that can output up 19v @ 2A or 12v @ 3A, varying also.

Ok, I can confirm that no matter what voltage the PowerGorilla outputs at, the adaptor for the ipad doesn't work
However, the dude from PowerTraveller says he has one more option to try - PowerGorilla>GorillaPad Ipad Adapter>Galaxy tab adaptor>Transformer charging cable!
Seems like a long shot, but again PowerTraveller are sending me the cables to try this for free, and in the meantime he is trying to get someone at their factory in china to source an original power supply, so they can test it and hopefully develop an accessory that will enable charging! Never had so much awesome support from a company ever!
I promise I'm not any way affiliated with this company, I'm just amazed at their customer service!

Thanks I'll have a read...
It's good you've found a solution for Energizer XP18000.
I was curious whether the company behind PowerGorilla had actually found a solution for their device and Transformer as well.
I'll keep an eye on both threads.

If the gorilla puts out 5V, amperage doesn't matter. It will only charge the TF while the screen is off. People need to stop thinking of the TF as a USB device. Just because the connector cable ends in USB doesn't mean it IS usb. Get a 14.4V lipo pack and add a female USB connector to it. Job done.

Why 5V... I wasn't talking about standard USB use. PowerGorilla can output 5v, 8.4v, 9.5, 12v, 16v, 19v or 24v. I was just hoping for an adapter than can use one of the above to fit Asus Transformer.
I was interested in the official response from PowerTraveller, as Ryaninja has had a conversation with them...

Sorry, wasn't really replying to you specifically. My point is that Powertraveller shouldn't be mucking around sending all these adapters to test with, such as "PowerGorilla>GorillaPad Ipad Adapter>Galaxy tab adaptor>Transformer charging cable".
The TF's charging system is well known. They don't have Asus' proprietary connector, so their only option is a female USB adapter that the TF's adapter plugs in to. The TF needs 12-16V on pin 1 to activate full charging mode, so there shouldn't be any guesswork here. PowerTraveller needs to make a new adapter. There is no other device on the market that uses 15V on pin 1, so they don't have any combination of off-the-shelf adapters that will put 15V to pin 1.

I'm with you.. let's hope that there is such an adapter in development. I've written to their support team, and will let you know if any answer.

PowerGorilla responded that they are looking into it and are aware of the number of Asus Transformer users, so it is in their attention.
From the response I can assume that there isn't a product at the moment, but one is likely to come out (my interpretation, not their words, which are exactly: "We are looking into this, at the moment and will contact you when we have a solution.")

universal power supply which one works with the shift?

Does anyone use a Kensington or Targus AC power adapter? If so what number tip are you using? I have both and Targus came with a couple of adaptors that fit but I am not willing try them and fry my shift. Sent an email to both companies asking if they have a tip that supports the shift but no reply yet.
I like univeral power suppplies since all I have to do is carry one power supply and the a couple of different tips for the the various devices I take with me instead of 5 different power supplies when I travel. So far I cannot find one that lists the HTC shift.
update from Kensington
Well i did get a reply back from Kensington but it looks they don't support the shift yet

Dear steve:
Thank you for contacting Kensington Technical Support.
I understand your situation. I would like to inform you that according to the Specification of HTC Shift X9500, it is having DC output: 12Vdc, 3A max. Although we have Power Adapter which can handle this specification, yet we do not have the smartTip which will provide the exact specification. There might be a possibility that a smartTip may snugfit into the power port of the device as discussed in the forum, but again it depends on the smartTip to regulate the voltage. If it fails to regulate the proper voltage, it may harm the device.
We hope that your question has been answered to your satisfaction. Should you have further questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Thanks x5-rwk!!!!!!
#3 was one of the two tips that seemed to fit I tested tehm without any power in the shift. I was to chicken to try it with power and smoke test my new my toy!
I have same Targus AC70u. Now I can take the Targus with me for the shift and all my other devices and leave the original one at home same as you.
Car charger as well?
Again thanks to x5-rwk, I can also confirm the Targus 70w Model APA10 with the #3 tips works as AC charger. I started looking at the Targus site and found this add-on for the APA10 it also uses the same tips. From what I understand it is the tips that regulate the voltage so this could be a car charger for the shift!? I ordered one from Amazon and will report back if it works.

NOPE The tips (connectors) for the digital devices that you can connect for this add on to the Targus charger are a different pin out so you cant use the lap connectors with it. Only the one for for cell phone etc.

Glad to hear that the AC charger is working for you, sorry that the vehicle charger is not working out so well. I was going to place an order for one recently but have not done it yet.
iGo is good
I have an iGo charger I've used for about 4 years and I have a tip that fits and it charges just fine - I would suspect that the Kensington and Targus ones would work the same way. They are supposed to figure out the power load and deliver it in the right way . . . .
BTW it connects to laptop connector, not the cellphone one.
The Targus/Kensington/iGo tips are interchangeable between vendors (personal experience) so you should be fine. If it fits,it'll work
So which tip #?
Which igo tip are you using with the Shift successfully?
Thanks,
Rob
Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but can any of you who are sucessfully using Targus tip #3 tell me which laptops that tip is intended for (make & model, please)? I have a collection of Kensington adapters and tips, and it seems like some Toshiba tips fit, but I'm also scared to fry my Shift (especially as that tip outputs 19V). If I knew, however, that the tip I am trying is intended for the same machines as Targus #3, then presumably the specs are the same.
Thanks for the help.
Hi,
I have used multiple chargers.
As long as the voltage does not exceed 12V and the polarity is correct your shift shouldn't fry.
Lower Voltages don't harm the shift either. The shift just doesn't "feel" it's there.
I even had the polarity wrong once. The charge lite came on, but it didn't charge... I found out within minutes end corrected it, but my shift still works fine and teh battery doesnot seem to be damaged. (I don't know what would have happened if I would have left it like that overnigt though...)

A cautionary tale
A follow up to my prior post, and cautionary tale:
I recently flew transatlantic on Virgin Atlantic (VS). While VS has in seat power available, due (I think) to UK government regulations there are two restrictions on use:
1) You need to use an adapter supplied by VS (they carry them onboard), not your own.
2) You need to remove the battery, so that you can only power your laptop, not recharge it.
The adapters that VS supplies are rebadged Targus equipment. Here’s the list of available adapters. Based on this thread and some testing of my own at home with my Kensington universal adapters, I felt confident that tip #3 would work. Note, however, that I tested what I had at home with a multimeter, and it registered 19V. Nevertheless, on the plane asked for #3 for my “Fujitsu”. Took out the battery and had no problem powering the Shift. Started to watch my movie.
About 10 minutes later, I noticed that the in seat entertainment screens of all the seats around me went out. I thought it was lucky I had my Shift with some movies stored.
10 minutes after that, the flight attendant came over, very apologetic, to say that a circuit breaker kept blowing for the entertainment system, and indicated an overload fault at my seat. We did some basic troubleshooting, switched the Targus adapter, and confirmed that everything was fine until the Shift was connected (Targus without Shift was OK), at which point they say the warning light. I was very politely asked if I could run on battery for the rest of the flight, which I did.
The incident has me worried though. We all assume that if the Shift doesn’t blow up, all is well. In fact the adapter may be trying to drive too high a voltage through the Shift, leading to feedback. A home electrical system with a 20A breaker may not be sensitive enough to detect this, but an aircraft system might be.
The other thing that concerns me is that I may have experienced problems specifically because I had my battery out. What I suspect is that the battery may be acting like a sponge, absorbing the excess energy. With the battery out, the power feeds back into the adapter and ultimately the power source circuit breaker. If true, this means we are likely putting an overcurrent into our batteries whenever we use one of these 19V adapters. Eventually, the battery could overheat and catch fire (remember the Dell and Sony battery recalls?). My story could have been a fluke, but personally, I would stay away from adapters except one designed for the Shift, or at least one which outputs 12V.
The Kensington N3 tip does work- and while I agree that caution should be taken with charging precious devices, the kensington universal power adapters are designed to charge phones, PDA's MP3 players & laptops. Bearing in mind that PDA's are 5v $ laptops are 19.5V and the Kensington can charge anything in between. . . I've not had problem so far!

I can't speak for the Shift, but I just fried a Touch HD using my Kensington power adapter
A quick search of the Kensington website returned the following FAQ:
Question: Are there some USB devices which the USB Mobile Device Charger won't charge?
Answer: Yes. Some devices, such as a PS3 controller or an HTC phone, have a proprietary chip which only allow the device to charge from certain USB ports (like a laptop or USB hub) or with the manufacturer's original charger.

Transformer Car USB and Wall Charger on Ebay

I don't know if either will actually work with the Transformer as the word 'standard' is used in the description, just thought I'd post the info for others. No .... it's not me that's selling the bits.
http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_from...sus+transformer+usb&_sacat=See-All-Categories
Just looks like a standard 5V 1000mA charger like all the other USB chargers available on eBay and not a 15V USB 3.0 compatible one that is required.
That's what I was wondering too. I've sent a message to the seller and have also included the url to this thread, hopefully we'll get a reply.

I've got a DIY on how to put together a Wall and car charger for the TF, check link in my signature.

DIY Accessories - anything goes (almost)

Seems to be a perfect fit for the ASUS 40 pin connector.
Now we have to decide WHAT to make. I was thinking about a few items, but your suggestions needed.
Wheeeeeeee....
Note: There may be other places to get it, but this is the first place I found it.
Mouser Part #: 571-2129276-1
Manufacturer Part #:
2129276-1
Manufacturer:
TE Connectivity
Description: I/O Connectors 40P CABLE MNT PLUG CHAMP DOCKING
Stock: 1,070 Can Ship Immediately
Pricing (USD)
1: $3.49
10: $3.14
25: $2.85
100: $2.71
PS: These are very small connection points, so you need to have special soldering equipment (sub-mm tips).
Well, maybe start with USB Host?
My suggestions:
- USB-Hub like Soundsurfer said
- Infrared adapter to control your home cinema (i saw that the new sony tablet s has it built in. maye we can port the software?)
- DVB-t

Great idea. I like it a lot.
I ordered a couple of these ACT4060 items:
ACT4060A SOP-8 ACT4060 Wide Input 2A Step Down
The idea is to take 15V from the tablet or charger and step down to 5V to power a USB hub, similar the the ASUS USB host device (same part).
I also thought to add a 5.5mm female barrel socket for charging with a 15V power supply, like these: Power Supply DC 15V
Note: Many other power supply are available from 12V-15V with 5.5mm barrel plug.

Sorry,

But we can try to combine a standard usb infrared adapter with the 40-pin connector. Maybe it doesn't work because of the lack of drivers (if they couldn't get extracted from the sony tablet). But i have to say that i'm neither a electronic technician nor a programmer. Only wanted to suggest my wishes ;-)

This would be a great idea - this sort of feature makes the Sony offering stand out in an otherwise fairly homogenous tablet market. Don't know anything about how to do this though, but will post back if I manage to find out anything useful...

Ok, i assume 2 or 3 pins on the 40-pin connector are for audio signals because the dock has an audio out! we could connect some irda leds to the pins like shown in this project:

But i have to say that i read today about a new logitech product called: logitech harmony link

i think i will buy these to replace my harmony one.

how about a mini usb cord? So I could plug my DSLR camera into it and download the pictures on the fly?..or even a micro to plug the phone in...but if it was a USB hub, it would work as well..just a longer cord.

Quick look on Google shows up this serial IR transceiver made by IguanaWorks. I'm afraid my electronics knowledge is very limited, but could the serial connector be replaced by these Asus-compatible adapters. I suspect the main problem might be the way the transceiver draws charge from the serial port to charge up the capacitor? According to the website, it uses LIRC so either the Irdroid or Androlirc apps might work (Androlirc requires an audio-IR device, so may need some tweaking, but is apparently open-source).
The other option might be the Newkinetix Re - whether it would be possible to replace the iThing connector with the ones you have located. Of course, the app is only for iOS, so yet another stumbling block.
I'm only feeding back the results of my digging, lack any of the required skills to make any of this work, so forgive if it all misses the mark completely.

Of course, this does also look pretty good, if you don't mind the IR extender "spiders" ... and the fact that the TV guide feature is only available for iPad (grr!)

That's a nice find! Now if only we knew some technical details about the connector pin-out.. I guess a good start would be looking at what both docks have inside and the connector routings, I doubt they use any external electronics, so should be quite easy to do cool things.
EDIT: at least now we'll be able to do another cable.. buy a standard USB 3.0, cut one end out and solder the new connector. A bit of cleaning everything up and ready to go.

Seems many people like infra-red controls. Here is some pics of the I-Got-Control device for the iPod/iPad/iPhone.
There seems to be only a few lines connected to the Apple 30 pin connector. Does anyone have the pin-out for Apple 30 pin connectors?
I think this might be easily attached to the Asus USB Host or SD adapter.
Thanks!
a backpack style add-on for the TF would be neat...something that adds a battery/usb/etc at the cost of making it a bit fatter and maybe taller..

If I were to solder every connector point through a wire, would connecting the dock from the side through the 40 pin connector to the bottom slot of the TF give the same communication as if the TF is docked? Been wanting to "dock" the tablet without actually having them together.
Yeah, it would work, but instead of soldering better find connectors and a cable. I'm thinking of doing it to my USB adaptor (which is very badly done, completely loose).

MHL adapter from monoprice!

Hey guys I found this mhl adapter on monoprice and it's $10.20. By far one of the cheapest out there. Also monoprice has great build quality on their products! Here's the product link http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10833&cs_id=1083314&p_id=8805&seq=1&format=2, and here's their video on it! They use it on our evo 3d's! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=P5tJl_a_wcc
Yep - that's already been discussed many times under the MHL adapter threads. There have been many reviews about that particular adapter - including mine.
Honestly - I have no complaints about my MHL adapter.

Yep - that's already been discussed many times under the MHL adapter threads. There have been many reviews about that particular adapter - including mine.

Really!? I've never seen it haha thanks! Do you like it?
I do - it works well. You just have to make sure you're using the right app - beause they don't all look equally as sharp.
For example - Diceplayer looks better when playing video than the stock gallery app in my opinion.
All that said, I just decided to order this adapter since it was so cheap:

I was looking for a 2nd MHL adapter to throw in my car, and this price ($6) was about right. I'll report back how it works when I get it.

Awesome i'll probably order mine from monoprice just cause I've gotten such great products from them.

I bought it when it went on sale a couple weeks ago for something like 9 bucks shipped. I wouldn't recommend it. The battery drains even when plugged in (which has to be plugged in to work). If you read the reviews monoprice actually responded that it only can input of 500mA which is only half of what the stock charger puts out but standard for USB ports on a PC. Don't know if its an MHL flaw or a monoprice adapter flaw but a 720p movie with the phone in airplane mode still managed to drain the battery in under 2 hours. You also can't manually change resolution although that's a limitation on the phone. This really isn't a problem as it defaults to 720p for most TVs but I did have it go to a really low resolution in a monitor.
Don't blame the monoprice adapter, that's a weakness with all mhl adapters. There was a guy who claimed his was charging, but checking the system settings showed he was limited to USB charging and not AC.
The key is not having other apps running or services you don't need. On an airplane, you should have gotten a much better discharge rate! The last time I used mine at a friends house to watch a 720p MKV, I had over 90% of my battery left. I figured I could have watched over 10 hours of video. If you're streaming, you will burn more battery obviously.

That's crazy ill have to try with a clean install. Also wish I could turnoff the backlight wwithout turning off the LCD. That would save some power. I though it might have been an MHL limitation but I have seen 1amp MHL adapters. That could just be the reseller making up specs they don't know. Really huge design flaw in my og Evo I could stream any content and it would still charge even with Bluetooth enabled. Shame you have to cripple the phone so much so it doesn't die on you.

Yeah, buy you had two connections into your phone with the OG Evo. The MHL adaptor will eventually (when tv's come with it) only need the HDMI cable and hopefully charge more than the USB does.

Didn't think they would.wrap it into a TV but if 500mA is an MHL limitation then it really wouldn't make a difference since the stock charger already outputs more than that and what the adaptot itself consumes.
Nice find! I was looking on Amazon for an MHL adapter, but glad I checked here before purchasing one.

Can you point me to any 1 AMP advertised MHL adapters?
Even if they work for other phones, this phone's funny. I have quite a few 2.1A chargers, both car and AC - and not all of them charge beyond USB charging rate. It seems one or two of the micro usb pins need to be shorted to charge our phone at a rate higher than 0.5A.

I just got this EBAY adapter - and I haven't had a chance to fully test it. It wouldn't work for HDMI out - so I thought it was defective, but I realized I haven't used MHL since I rooted my phone (olympus rom). I used my monoprice adapter and also wasn't able to get it to work, though it ran very well when the phone was stock. So I'll wait to review until I flash a new rom that actally lets me use the MHL adapter properly.
One thing that shows promise is that when I charge through the EBAY $6 MHL adapter, it shows up as AC charging on my phone. The monoprice shows up as USB charging. I've also confirmed that it definitely charges faster.
I'll still have to test whether or not it actually works - and if it'll actually charge faster IN USE. I'll let you guys know. If it does work and charge faster than the mono price adapter, I'll post here and start a new thread. Otherwise, I'll report back and apologize.
I updated to a kernel which allowed HDMI out and tested the new HDMI adapter. Visually, back to back with the monoprice adapter - the EBAY $6 adapter worked just as good. That is to say that the picture looked idetically sharp.
I then played a 42 minute 720P MKV through diceplayer - and my phone's charge increased from 66% to 70%. It's the first time I've seen that with an MHL adapter.
With this new kernel (Anthrax R13) - this MHL adapter now shows charging my phone as being via USB instead of AC. But next, I plan to play an identical video with the monoprice adapter - to see if my charge level increases or drains in use.
I'll start a new thread when I have the results, but regardless, at $6 - this EBAY cheapie has to be the best value yet.
Are there any other kernel/rom options that would support hdmi out to tv? Thanks
One thing you might want to consider if using this with the HTC dock, is that the Monoprice adapter won't fit well. You have to force the micro usb in. To use it in the dock, you need a micro usb adapter that has the micro end with a less bulky plastic enclosure. The curved side of the tip needs to be closer to the plastic edge. The adapter I got from eBay fits better, without forcing or bending. You could also try carving away excess material.

Charging port?

Can anyone recommend a replacement charging port. I hate the Asus design with the removable part. My cable is fine but charger is broken. Would like to replace with one that isn't prone to being useless.

Good luck finding one brotha...mine broke with the pins all bent. I ended up just selling my prime as is and picked up a TF300t. Charging port design is much durable and sturdier.
I think you mean the AC adapter. Will be hard as it is 15 volts or so on the "USB"
This is a bad design in my eyes as you can break other devices by plugging into the "port".
As fitsbain said, good luck, it's 15v output through the USB port.
Just FYI, the charger is the same as the TF101, so they're not going to change it.
Just FYI...
I had thought my charger was broken, but my son figured out that the adaptor had just come loose.
However, while thinking it was broken, I did search, and found that Office Depot (Los Angeles) had them in stock. I was able to order it online for in-store pickup.
Fortunately, I figured out it wasn't actually broken, so I didn't need to buy the replacement, but if anyone is desperate for a replacement charger, you can check Office Depot.
I just bought an ac to dc converter 12v x 1.5a with the usb adapter from Radioshack. Working great. Ordered a power only plug from Amazon that said it's compatible with TF201 for 8 dollars. Will let you know when it comes in. The Radioshack setup is around 32 dollars.

From what I have read, this is not necessarily true. Apparently one of the pins recognises USB 3 connection and only then outputs the higher voltage. I have not tested this though, and if I am wrong then please correct me.

The charger itself is supposed to recognize whether or not the device can handle a certain voltage range. There's a few threads on the 101 forum regarding McGuyver power units and they found that the charging plug only works on Neg and Positive. The charger is supposed to read resistance and charge accordingly. AFAIK, the range set of the charger is 5v x 2a - 15v x 1.2a. I hooked my Rezound to it to charge once when I first had the 101, and nothing burned up. The adapter was junk though and died after 3 months, then the tab followed a week later. Charger was stuck in 5v mode, which will not charge the tab or the dock. Will drip charge with tab only, but takes forever.

There are chances your USB female connector is the problem.
Just check out this link it might help : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlkLwgT5xUk
Thx I'll check this when I get home. I know the cable is still good since the computer can recognize my prime.
