[Q] [Smartphone vs. Tablet] Samsung Galaxy S II vs Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am planning to buy samsung galaxy s II, but i have read news from samsung galaxy tab 10.1. I also read the news that tablets will beat the smartphones in the future. They have pros and cons on each. I am quite confused that samsung galaxy tab 10.1 is cheaper ($499) than samsung galaxy s II ($800+). So if you're gonna choose between the two, sgs II or sam tab 10.1? This also is a battle between smartphone and tablet. A need vs a want. Which do you think is better to have?
I have also read that even the best smartphone is no match on any tablet.
I'll give a advantages and disadvantages of the two:
a) Smartphone
Pros: - a phone
- more portable
- more stable
- community (custom roms)
- rootable*
Cons: - more expensive
- smaller means less performance
- slower
- not so great for watching movies and web browsing
b) Tablet
Pros: - cheaper
- better performance
- bigger display
- better movie watching
- better gaming experience
- better multitasking
-better web browsing
Cons: - bigger
- not as powerful as a netbook that's almost its size
- not a phone
All are the same excluding the pros and cons of the both
The choice is yours

Except for the fact that the SGSII has a lower resolution screen while having a faster cpu than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Which makes it... faster and better for multi-tasking.

A smartphone is for doing phone stuff, and a tablet is for browsing the internet etc. I wouldn't use a tablet as a replacement for a phone!

I woud consider a tablet a replacement for a small laptop, not a smartphone.
If you use your smartphone's features (like browsing the web and using email) mostly around the house, then I would pick a tablet over a smartphone, and get a cheaper Android phone to go along with it.

- smaller means less performance
wrooong..
++ smaller means you can take it anywhere without having to have a bum bag too.

Smartphones are way more portable than tablets, which for me means I'd take a smartphone over a tablet any day if I could have only one. I can't be bothered to take a 10" tablet with me everywhere I go, but definitely love the functionalities of a smartphone.
If you can have just 1: smartphone > tablet

Agreed, if I had the choice between the two, it would be the phone. A tablet is a nice convenient toy.

[Q] Let me know the truths.

Hi,
I'm thinking to buy a new tablet pc for my school. I'll convert my books into pdf files and will continue lessons with tablet pc.
I need:
- Performance(performance means for me, what is smooth on home screen animations and switching between applications)
- Pen, which is has a thin pointer & body and useful for every app any second
- Screen size
And I searched the market for that options, result is : Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 or HTC Flyer.
Now, I need to know truths about Samsung Galaxy 10.1. Let me know them please..
Firstly when I was searching on the market, I tested the SG 10.1 and saw the:
- Animations are not smooth, I think 1Ghz processor is not enough
- Boot time is so bad, about 25-30 seconds(HTC Flyer is ready in 3 seconds)
What about your lookouts? Battery time on usage and more important question: battery life? I mean is battery time is always same on same usage or its decreasing? (if you use)pen performance, is that a good device to school?
Thanks a lot for your answers.
yeah the Tab is not performing as expected, too many slow down and bugs, i am quite dissatisfied with mine. It has the best screen out of all the tablets, but that was it, get an Ipad 2 man, your needs is simple enough for a simple device. My two cents.
every android honeycomb tab will perform the same. all have the same processor etc. stock launcher is laggy.Download and install ADW EX, super slick, super smooth, no lag.
As for stylus the Adonit pro stylus is what you will need, costs $30. Gtab 10.1 will be perfect. just switched to it from the eee pad transformer and love it
Battery life is awesome. I am a heavy user and i get about 8 hours. As for overall processor performance ICe Cream Sandwich will be optimized for multiple core processors. When ICS comes out in a few weeks, Tegra 2 powered devices will rip everything else to shreds. that being said performance is great right now.
IPAD 2 IS NOT THE ANSWER! Sheesh! If half the users of Android tabs would just do a little research they would understand that they kick the iPads ass when it comes to functionality.
Also stay away from the HTC Flyer. Number one it runs gingerbread and not the tablet optimized Honeycomb software. It is about to be discontinued, and recently took a nose dive in price to $299, the stylus that you need for it (the official HTC one) costs $80. craziness!! It also only has a single core processor(galaxy tab has dual core) and a 7" screen compared to the 10.1 inch on the galaxy tab
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5j2F4VcBmeo
cannot resist .
PS: it's a good tab if you willing to tinker a bit and do lot's of reading/learning.

How does it kill the ipad2? I just got the tab. I am a graduate student, so money is not loose for me. I need performance and functionality that will last... and I mean last. Not be outdated and useless in a few months like many android devices suffer.
I am debating if the ipad2 might be a better investment. What do you think?

Come on dude. Think before you post. Will the ipad 2 be "useless" when ipad 3 comes out? Every gadget that is made is updated to a newer model every year. But, they all still perform. And work. Only techies and wealthy people update their device every year.
As for OP- go to store and try out different tablets and see if they do what you want them to do. You will never know untill you play around with them. Although, if you searched just a couple of threds here, there seems to be a number of tab owners who do not like the stylus input on their device. I use my tab in my World History classroom, but mostly to supplement a lesson. I absolutely love my galaxy tab, but there are far more useful applications for education on the ipad.

on the Flyer
Well on the topic of stylus input neither produce the results expected. The galaxy tab doesnt accept a fine enough input to be useful with handwriting, however typing is a breeze from the large screen area and then with a bluetooth keyboard it is almost as good as a full blown laptop, if not as good. The Flyer is a great tablet in its own regard but lack of official Honeycomb drove me away, and the stylus while fairly accurate cannot replace pen and paper and with my larger hands did not jive and palm rejection was lacking. So if stylus input was a hope go demo them and see for yourself!
Oh also I typed all of this on my Gtab
I use mine for exactly that. My books are in my Tab. I still take notes on paper though, I prefer paper for notes. I've been very happy with mine. I don't turn mine off, leave it in standby

Galaxy 8.9 question

I didn't see a q and a section for the tab 8.9. I need to pick up a tablet for my niece before the end of the year. It will not be used as a phone. The primary use will be for skype, google maps, watching videos(netflix, youtube, mp4's) and doing a small amount note taking. I am currently looking at the streak 7(because of the price), the wifi only galaxy tab, and the wifi only tab 8.9. I know the tab plus is coming out soon but she is going to be traveling and needs this before the end of the year. I know that the streak and original tab both have a lot of development done(themes, rom's, kernel's) as well as accessories. I wanted to know which of these three would be the best performer for the tasks that I listed above?
I can't give you a comparison of the devices but I recently bought an 8.9 wifi only and am very happy with it. I don't bother with videos but use it for work - emails, notes, web, Skype. Excellent screen, plenty fast enough for me (although some claim it is a bit laggy), good battery life.
My tips
1. Go for 32gb or bigger as you can't expand the memory
2. Install ADW EX launcher for a better user experience
3. Add a really good keyboard app (I use Thumbs)
Just typed the above on the tab and didn't have to make a single correction (and I'm no great typist)

[Q] should I buy a samsung galaxy tab 10.1 ???

hi everyone
I was going to buy it asus transformer but I found a tab 10.1 16gb for 300 $ new with warranty
my problem is there is no expansion slot on tab 10.1 and keyboard is nothing like asus transformers keyboard also im moving up from ipad 1 I wanna know is the display better in resolution and color.
is it better than the transformer ?
should I buy the tab or no ?
tnx
sure why not?
Sure why not? I like mine!
I would. Why not? Its an awesome tablet with lots for roms to choose from.
Yes, get it. I just got one a few days ago for a similarly good price. You won't regret it. It is an amazing piece of hardware.
I have one, and honestly, I think you would be better off either
A) Buying the "New" iPad
B) Wait for the Galaxy Tab 11.6
$300 is a pretty good price for the Tab, amazing actually, but I have been disappointed owning this Tegra 2 Tab. It's sluggish on transitions, and laggy at times, MANY MANY force closes. People here my say different, but I would wait for that Exynos powered 11.6.
Also, the iPad 3 is a STUNNER. I used one for 2 days before having to give it back :'( and all I can say is wow. The usability is just awesome, although I do prefer some features you get an an Android tab.
Haven't seen a Transformer up close so I can't compare it but I'd put the GT 10.1 display between the iPad 2 and newer iPad. New iPad screen is just fantastic.
Comes down to personal choice really; for me $300 sounds like a great price and I'd drop that with little thought if I was in the market for a new tablet. For others $300 might be a significant amount to spend.
On the flip side, if you check the local used market and aren't seeing things cheaper it might be worth it to buy the tablet, use it for a bit, and then sell it used if you don't like it. I can't see the value of it dropping much lower than $300 with things like the Kindle Fire out there selling for $200.

I wouldn't suggest buying another tablet but I would wait for something like the 11.6 the real ipad killer which would be awesome, because in all honesty when you see that beast you will forget about the 10.1 then again its still tba

I was in the same boat as you trying to decide. I even went against everything I believe in and decided to try the iPad and could only take it for 24 hrs and took it back. It was not for me and I wanted to like it so much, I thought I could have the best of both worlds, android and Apple since I have a S2 and original Galaxy Tab. But, I took it back and got the Tab 10.1 even though the Transformer Prime was calling my name, its a beautiful beast of a device and they support their tabs with great update support unlike Samsung, but I chose the Tab because I knew XDA would not let me down, so I bought it 2 days ago, and rooted it last night with some ice cream love.

^ I actually thought of the same thing, The only reason I chose the 10.1 over the Transformer (Not prime) was because they mentioned the transformer wasn't on the chart for getting the ICS update. However Transformer Prime does pike my interest, may add it to the collection over time. Sexy beast indeed. fapfapfapfpafafp
I am looking to change my original iPad, and thinking of the asus prime transformer, new iPad and tab 10.1. After using a galaxy S2 for six months I am really interested in the tab, however it looks a bit outclassed by the new iPad.
What would you guys recommend in my situation?
I got mine for free from Google through work. While I do like it, I would not have purchased one myself. I'd rather take the money and put it towards an ultra book. But it definitely does suffice for just web browsing, music, and as my alarm clock.
Problem is there is no such thing as ultra book, where I felt the 10.1 was at it's prime supremacy, there came the 11.6 and the Transformer Prime, FML.

there is no overkilling tablet .
pro ipad 3: best display and performance, many apps, ebooks, music etc.
contra ipad 3: apple..., expensive
pro transformer prime: best performance on an android tablet, good asus update politics
contra transformer prime: bad availability, expensive, no 3g yet
pro galaxy tab 10.1: good perfomance, stylish design like a well known apple product, open bootloader --> many custom roms, priceless
contra galaxy tab 10.1: bad update politics of samsung, haptics because of the missing gorilla glas aren't sooo good, accessoirs (hdmi, sd card, usb) only via dock connector
i think the galaxy tab 10.1 will be get an enormous speed increase with the upcoming ics firmwares from samsung (hardware acceleration is still missing, release maybe in may '12)
if you have the money take the quad cpu asus transformer prime otherwise the galaxy tab 10.1 will be a solid device for the next 1-2 years.
an 11.6 inch tablet isn't a rival to the ipad 3 i think. the ipad has the optimal size and weight, the galaxy tab 10.1 is the absolute maximum size for me. bigger sizes wouldn't be handy for the couch and a traveling with the tram or train. but that is my own opinion

499 for an iPad is not expensive, it is inline with competition. IMHO, Google and the companies really fudged up with Tablets. It is totally different with phones, you almost have to go Apple with the tablet and Android with phones. That's what I plan on doing.
I somewhat agree, tablet wise Apple would be nice, then again Apple has horrible tablet support, they're more focused on the phones.

Tab S3 or Google Pixel C

I'm in the market for a new tablet. Is the Tab S3 the best option? What are your thoughts?
Does google movies work on a rooted Tab S3?
I looked at the pixel but poor wifi put me off. Got the tab s3 and loving it. Prefer a slightly bigger bezel making it easier to hold but it's very nice with great performance. Pen is a nice accessory. Can't find a decent cover though!

Yes, Google movies work just fine on a rooted device. After you root your device you'll have to rename the liboemcrypto.so file in system/vendor/lib in order to get NETFLIX working again.
As for picking between the Pixel C and the Tab S3, I have both tablets and I prefer the S3. The Pixel C has known hardware issues (touchscreen stops responding to touch, and WiFi will occasionally refuse to connect to a "weak" signal unless I'm in the same room as my router). Unfortunately, I'm so far past my original purchase date that Google will only replace my device rather than refunding my money. Their replacement will work for a 45-60 days before the touchscreen dies and the replacement cycle begins anew.
The Pixel C has a superior processor, but only 3GB of RAM vs 4GB on the S3; the Pixel also lacks a SD-Card slot. Both devices have beautiful displays, but the S3 has HDR support whereas the Pixel does not. The Pixel is also heavier, especially with it's optional keyboard.
Depending on where you are in the world, the S3 might already be on sale (right now I could get it for $750 vs. $800), perhaps in a month or two it'll be even less (or if your dollar is crap like ours then it's probably better to buy now than wait for it to become $850 magically overnight). If it's actually cheaper to buy the C over the S3 then I'd say go for it. Amazon seems to let sellers gouge the hell out of people so in my case the C is more expensive than the S3 - given the nature of tech supposed to be cheaper with time, logic dictates the S3 to be the better value.
Personal preference but no SD card on the Pixel vs the S3 because Google thinks everything has access to the net 24/7. 32GB isn't enough but that extra storage is sure nice (high speed SD cards are cheap these days, just make sure you're not buying from Alibaba or eBay lol).
Was in the same position before but ended up buying the Tab S3. The Pixel C is a great tablet but it is a year old already. It will still receive Android O but that's the last update it will get. (According to Google, they committed to 2 years of updates for their products)
The Tab S3 was my choice because of the added features Samsung put into it. The S Pen sets it apart from its competition. It will get update to Android O although very late. And im pretty sure it will be upgraded again to Android P before it reaches end of life status (based on past Samsung tablet updates, they usually update tablets with 2 major OS versions).

Your honest opinion

So yesterday I bought the tab 7+ and super excited, untill I met a friend who told me the iPad pro is much better! He showed me a bench mark video where iPad beats the tab on every aspect.
So my question, shall I open the tab7+ or return it for iPad? And why?
What's more relevant is how the benchmarks translate into real world performance for normal tasks. There are also other factors to consider. I own an iPad Pro and I hate not having expandable storage. The iPad Pro is also more expensive and requires spending another $100+ on a pencil. S7+ has a better screen. iPad Pro doesn't have Dex OS features, etc.
Why would anyone switch a fully customizable tablet with something that's locked has less ram and has a worse screen Is the question. Benchmarks are meaningless when important factors come into place also they don't translate much in the real world.

My other issue is that the apps on iPad are more compatible than on Android tablets in general. Bench mark is usually what makes a device more reliable in the future or as I understood from my friend. Which means in a year time the tablet still perform as new where the tablet gets laggy over time. Please correct me if I am wring

bro it has a 865+ you dont need to worry about performance for at least 2 years.
i have ipad 6th gen and ipad air2 and in my opinion ipad os is too annoying because i hate when i dont have proper access to the file system. secondly expandable storage need i say more? lastly i just hate apple products , i have ipads macbook and iphone i am in the eco system but whenever i want to do any sort of file sharing with windows or android devices which i also have then it gets sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo annoying makes me wanna burn apple products down .
long story short dont worry about your tablet . you'll enjoy it
In short, I'd say Samsung/Android gives you choices, Apple doesn't. Some people hate to have choices, some can't do without. You decide what is important for you.
I like to have choices, and I am very happy with the Tab S7+.

IPhones and iPads always do much better than Android devices in benchmarks but in real world use the Android counterparts perform faster in speed tests. Comparing my Tab S7+ to the iPad, it's actually faster and just as smooth as the iPad pro. It also has numerous Advantages over the IPad pro.
- Has Micro SD card support
- Comes with a stylus right out of the box
- Unlike the Apple pencil the S Pen doesn't not need to be charged to work (only needs a charge for Bluetooth/gesture functions)
- Tab S 7+ is more functional right out of the box
- Screen looks better than IPad
I could go on.
I got the S7+ last Saturday and I'm very happy. In my country, Samsung's having promotion which give away the keyboard cover. So I just need to buy SD card and hub to make it a perfect laptop.
I've just used S7+ for some minor gaming, emulator + Word + Excel + PPT + Ecosia...
Believe in me, the S7+ will not make you feel you'in in jail like iPad Pro

My Tab S7+ had 6 GB ram, the iPad Pro has 6 GB ram.
Also people choose Apple over Android mostly because of the eco system. If you already have an iPhone and/or Mac it makes more sense to go with an iPad as everything fits better between devices.

The 865+ can't even play League of Legends: Wild Rift on ultra with a locked 60 fps, I had framedrops down to 50-52 in fights. My three and a half year old iPad Pro 2017 (A10X chip) never drops one frame. Same for Call of Duty Mobile, Pubg Mobile and other games. Yes the 865+ is nice, but at least in gaming performance it's worse than the A10X, leave alone the A12X / A12Z (iPad Pro 2018/2020) .

Yes, having choices is aweseome. I actually wanted to change from my 2017 iPad Pro to the Tab S7(+) because the screen aspect ratio is wider (16:10) and with apps I can change it to 16:9 and output that via hdmi. Unfortunately both the S7 and the S7+ can not output hdmi without disconnecting every few minutes (the developers know about it but who knows when it is fixed... weeks, months?).

I had the Tab S7, Tab S7+, iPad Pro 2020 and iPad Pro 2017 here. The S7's are on par with the 2017 iPad Pro, a bit faster in quite some apps, slower in most demanding games. The S7's stand no chance in performance heavy tasks against the 2020 iPad Pro. App/game load times, heavy duty video rendering the S7's get demolished.
I understand 90%+ of all people using their tablet will not need that extra performance or even notice they are missing it (you only really notice when you compare the devices side by side)

Even tho I kind of "rambled" about how the iPad Pro in fact IS faster (not "better") it all depends what YOU want to do with it.
- Do you watch a lot of movies/series on your tablet? Any "dark" content will look better due to the OLED display on the S7+ (for example the series Daredevil or Punisher... sooo many night scenes). Also the 16:10 screen aspect ratio is nicer for watching video in my opinion
- Do you game a lot? If yes, HEAVY games? Do you care about having ultra quality? Then the iPad Pro is MUCH more capable and will be enough for at least 1-2 more years to come. If you don't play the heaviest games or don't need ultra quality in every game then the Tab S7+ will do just fine!
- Do you want to expand storage with a SD card? -> Ipads can't do that
- Do you surf the web a lot? The iPad Pro's screen aspect ratio feels a lot better for me doing that.
- Do you hold your tablet a lot in your hand for long periods of time? If yes, the S7+ is ~70 grams lighter compared to the 12.9" iPad Pro. This doesn't sound like too much but you will notice it quite a bit after some time
I have iPad air 3 (2019) previusly an iPad air1. Along 5 Years only with iPad and a Lot of Android phones.

- multimedia, this Samsung S7 rocks, 16:10, 4 speakers Is really clear.
- multitasking: Snapdragon and 6gb ram runs everything, multitask with 4 apps in the same time Is really great, dex option mindblow my mind.
- the fast charge 2.0 with 45w Is mindblow!!.
- Google services, Chromecast
- APKs (jejeje)
- i connect a sdcard reader direct to the USB C Port.
- i put +256gb with a microsd card for 25usd (cybermonday)
But, not everything Is ok:.
- games, graphics sucks, the resolution of cod and pubg sucks!.
- multigestures, in iPad in have a Lot of usefull gestures, with 4 fingers i can change apps, minimize, Run the last apps running, etc.
- iPadOs Is the best Tablet OS, i can Run a side (Edge) app in Mobile version.
- i can control volumen from the taskbar without the fisical buttons.
Galaxy TAB S7+ has one of the worst screen you can put in a tablet because it has PWM and burned highlights, I have the S7 and is miles away better screen than S7+, for gaming the iPad I think is much better than the Android ones, for the rest I prefer Android and the S7 that is excelent for the use I do and doesn't hurt my eyes like my phone with the crappy oled screen with PWM.
On my tab smart view doesn't work it will not cast to my TV my phone connects first go but not this tablet and no one seems to know why.

So yesterday I bought the tab 7+ and super excited, untill I met a friend who told me the iPad pro is much better! He showed me a bench mark video where iPad beats the tab on every aspect.
So my question, shall I open the tab7+ or return it for iPad? And why?

I swapped an iPad Pro 12.2 for this Samsung, and I'm sorry I did. Had I known in advance that there was no earphone plug on the Samsung, I'd not have made the swap at all. So my answer is: return it.

bro it has a 865+ you dont need to worry about performance for at least 2 years.
i have ipad 6th gen and ipad air2 and in my opinion ipad os is too annoying because i hate when i dont have proper access to the file system. secondly expandable storage need i say more? lastly i just hate apple products , i have ipads macbook and iphone i am in the eco system but whenever i want to do any sort of file sharing with windows or android devices which i also have then it gets sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo annoying makes me wanna burn apple products down .
long story short dont worry about your tablet . you'll enjoy it

I have often wondered exactly how to describe the MAIN is with an iPad (my iPad Pro is a wonderful device and the Magic keyboard makes it even better BUT) proper access to the file system literally annoys me almost EVERY time I use it. Saving photos or files from another device or camera, files from an email, a PDF it just annoys the CRAP out of me. And the point is nailed home EVERY time I ask my 29yo iOS fanboy ..... “if you had this situation, how would you do it (like saving a file)” ..... watching him fumble convinced me that although overall the iPad is ready to use the proper access to the file system is an almost deal killer
If you never use a PC and only use Mac then staying in the same ecosystem with the iPad might be enough to learn the other way but if you still use a PC then the iPad will be a good device but for me always leaving me wanting
