Iphone 2G data Plan on Galaxy s2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I tried the iphone 2G trick to get Unlimited data (2G).
I get it, and put back the sim in my SGS2.
And it still get the speed of HSPA
Weird
is it safer now to move to Personal Smartphone dataplan (30 vs 20)

What's the iPhone 2G trick? It'd still be HSDPA speeds as that's what the SIM allows. The phone is restricted to to 2G and the carried will be able to see what speeds you're getting and move you to a limited package if you're not careful.

Att can call it whatever they want. But for unlocked devices you get unlimited data 2g/3g/H/H+ on your device depending on your carrier and whats available in your area.
I could have got the unlimited non-smartphone plan but I stuck with the 2g iphone plan just incase I ever get an att device I will still have grandfathered unlimited data.
To be on safe side incase you ever use your att upgrade, switch to the grandfathered unlimited 30 plan.

I can't tell from his post but he may be on AT&T in the U.S. They have a dumb-phone unlimited data plan that you can use on a smartphone as long as they don't have the phone's IMEI in their database. A lot of us in the U.S. are using it with the SGS2 and getting HSPA+ speeds for $20 a month including unlimited MMS. Helps offset the ridiculous prices we've paid for the phone.

To future proof your data plan, I would say ge the $30 data plan or stay on the unlimited 2g iphone plan.
There is no point of the iphone 2g trick, if you switch to dumbphone plan.

Sorry, yes i am in us with ATT
Ok I see, so as long as the IMEI is not in ATT database, so i can use it.
If one day our cheer SGS2 has it IMEI in ATT, so my plan may be revoke in worst case or will be grandfather.
So if i want to futur proof at 100% it is better to go to the $30 smartphone plan (I still have my inspire)
Thx

There absolutely no chance att will have an unlocked version uk or anyother non att branded phone in there database.
The only few phones(and small %) were unlocked nexus one and dell streak imei were in att database.

hate to bring back a thread thats several months old but i was wondering if the dumbphone plan still works for getting unlocked/UK GS2 phones to have unlimited HSPA+ data?

Yup. I'm on it. Though it is probably throttled. The fastest speed I've gotten is around 6.5mbps, and I average around 3-4.

Would you mind sharing your APN settings? are you using the cingular apn settings?
just got my phone and i was originally getting about 3mb down, but now i am getting 1.6 mb down, but it could just be because of the rom that i am running.

Using wap.cingular. My speed varies quite a bit. 1.6 isn't that bad.

EDIT: just ran again. got 1.885 down, .999 up. Last 4 results before that are:
4.1 down, 1.05 up
5.36 down, 1.05 up
2.37 down, 1.01 up
2.97 down, 1.13 up.
So, all over the place.

your right, it does vary quite a bit. i was able to get a few 4-5 pulls, then a few 3-4 pulls. So that is fine, still faster then what i am coming from at almost any given time.
Thank you.

How is the tethering plan will boost your signal?
To the OP, did you go over 5GB of data in your billing cycle? Did you use your phone as a tether?

Huh?
Anyways, the so-called 4g does make a dramatic difference even with the Vibrant. Where I live, I went from around 1mbps down to 3-5mbps down (speed based on speedtest.net app). My ripoff p.o.s. ISP limits my speed to only 3mbps because I don't pay an extra 15-30 dollars a month. Recently I was downloading a large file, and out of curiosity I switched in the middle of downloading from my local ISP to tethering my phone via wifi. The download speed was around 1.66 times faster, peaking at speeds almost twice as fast. In other words, the speedtest.net results, which suggest hspa+ on my Vibrant is significantly faster than my 3mbps ISP, were validated.
Secondly, data plans cost the same regardless if you have access to hspa+ or not.

I think the $10 text plan is only applicable for those who also have the unlimited android plan. I asked my t-mobile dealer about my text plan (after my added an unlimited android plan) and he reduced my monthly text rate (unlimited at $15 to $10).
I'm not 100% sure though

Dude seriously? Did you try rebooting your phone? You don't need to upgrade to any plan to continue using 3g. There's no such thing as a "4g plan" that makes your vibrants data speeds any faster. The dude's posting here are blowing smoke up your ass. My vibrant is using the $24 grandfathered plan (4G didnt exist then) and I've been hitting 5Mb's down and 1.5 up. You will see increased data speeds if your local network has been upgraded but that's it. If you lost 3G signal is could be because of weather or service issues in your area or your phone just needs to be restarted. Call t-mo back and switch back to your previous plan if it worked better for you financially. Once again, you will not see a speed boost from any plans that t-mo offers.

[Q] AT&T thinks my sister's vibrant is an iPhone

I bought a vibrant yesterday from craigslist and unlocked it so my sister could use it on AT&T with $15 unlimited data. All was going well until this morning when she got this text message, "AT&T Free Msg: Did you know a data plan is required for your iphone? We have added an appropriate data plan for your iphone. Learn more at att.com/iphoneplans."
It upgraded her plan to the $25 2gb plan automatically and won't let me downgrade the plan. On mywireless it calls the plan a datapro iphone plan but still displays the phone as unknown.
Has anyone else had this problem? I thought this phone would be safe from imei sweeps.
Not yet, but I have a feeling that it is coming sooner than later.
I think I'm just going to call cs, tell them the problem, give them the vibrants imei and hope for the best. I really hope they aren't using some kind of deep packet analysis to find out how she's using the phone.
They probably are--money is everything to these companies, and they will do whatever they can to make more of it.
Funny! Now we know who we'll be paying our bills to

What did you tell att to get on your plan? did you tell them you had a vibrant (or sgh-t959) or did you use an ATT dumbphone first?
In my attempt, I took her sim out of her iPhone 3G (200mb data plan) put it in an LG Xenon (dumb phone) called customer service and had them change the plan to the $15 unlimited for dumb phones, waited 15 minutes, put the sim in the unlocked vibrant.
This worked just fine when I did it with a couple of unlocked mytouch 3g's.
Should I have waited longer before switching phones or should I have just told them I have a vibrant (or SGH-t959).
Either way you should be able to get them to take it off due to the fact that you shouldn't be pulling 3g with the vibrant. Yeah you might get it once in a while but probably not consistently.

It gets 3g consistently and works really well in my area, which might be part of the problem. I backed it off to edge (at least for a few days). You probably live in an 850mhz service area. The vibrant only supports 1900mhz hspa but does support 850mhz edge. I get great 3g speeds with the vibrant 1000~2000kbps.

SGS2 ATT Throttle Fix

Does anyone know of any fix for the HSPA+ SGSII I9100 throttle problem?
Is anyone even working on a throttle removal process for this phone?
When I originally got my phone I was using the wap.Cingular APN and was actually getting pretty fast speeds. I then went into the AT&T store and switched my unlimited 3G to unlimited 4G and it seems that the speeds have sort of crapped out. If throttling is the issue I would love a fix. Hopefully someone that may have more information than me can enlighten us

Throttling is done on the network gateway. To get around speed throttling, you have to be on the right data plan (4G of some kind), and you have to be connecting to the right gateway. The wap.cingular APN is throttled. 4G phones have a different APN. I think that APN is just "phone". There are a bunch of threads that already exist on this subject, just search for them.

As I said above, if you changed your plan from 3g to 4g, you will probably have to update your APN to point to the correct gateway. wap.cingular will only get you the lower end of HSPA+ speeds. You want the "phone" APN. Search is your friend.
Trust me Bro. I searched like crazy. The fix seems to be for LTE phones.
I got the international SGII about a month ago. It's only HSPA+. One week after I bought it they came out with the lte version on att. what a bummer.
It seems all the threads online are about lte phones, switching the APN back to HSPA+. I tried some of those fixes to no avail. still throttled at .13 mb. I'm only 8 days into my billing cycle and this is unacceptable as one can't even open a website. it seems the ping speed has quadrupled.
I'm due for an upgrade and my contract would end in few days. I was wondering if there exists a fix for this on an HSPA+ phone or should I just go and upgrade to skyrocket. There's no way I can go on with .13 for the rest of the month.
If anyone knows of a fix on HSPA+ phones that would be great.
BTW, when I bought the phone, I called att and tried to add the new phone imei it came out as a Blackberry. I told them to add the 4g plan but I really don't know if they did it. The lady was like you should have a blackberry plan. So I told her to just keep my iphone data plan unchanged.
My phone then on it's own was pulling HSPA+ speeds up to 7mb/s so I didn't care.
Do you think I should call back and make sure I have a 4G plan added?

I also have the unlocked international Galaxy SII. I am on the unlimited data plan for non-smartphones, using the wap.cingular APN. I'm averaging around 3.5-4 mbps down. Fastest I've seen is about 6.5mbps. This is fast enough for me; I would prefer getting unlimited data for the price I'm paying anyways, rather than pay twice as much as I do now only to be capped at 2gb per month.
Maybe you flashed a different modem to your phone without knowing it. What is your setup? Custom ROM? etc?

You can check your account online. If you log in, and go to myAT&T > Wireless > Usage & Recent Activity, under Data it will list your data - If yours contains a string that looks like HSPDDB, it is 4G unlimited. If it only contains DPPB, it is 3G unlimited. Mine (for the unlimited data for non-smartphones) says GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - DTAU.
EDIT: you said above it was pulling HSPA+ speeds up to 7mbps... what changed? Did you flash a custom ROM? New kernel? New modem? I find it very weird that your speeds would suddenly drop from 7mpbs to 0.13mbps for no reason.
Using the phone APN and a 4G plan will get you the fastest speeds. Back when I was on a 3G plan, I could only rarely connect to the phone APN, and could get only about 7 Mbps top speed. When I switched to a 4G plan, I found I could consistently connect to the phone APN, and my top speed went up to about 9.5 Mbps.
Note that speeds on either APN are highly variable; I can get 9 Mbps one time, then only 1-2 Mbps a couple minutes later.

Oh, I see. You're getting throttled because you've used tons of data this cycle. So it sounds like you are not on an unlimited plan, but a capped plan. If you're supposed to be on an unlimited plan, I would call them up and fight tooth and nail to get it back.
But seriously, I'm on an unlimited plan, but I don't use nearly that much data (3.1 GB!!!) in 8 days. Heck, I hardly ever go over 2 GB in one entire billing cycle.
The only thing I can recommend is for you to hook up to Wi-Fi as much as possible. I have Wi-Fi at home and work, so when I am there, it is not consuming my data plan allowance. Besides, Wi-Fi will end up with a more consistent speed (usually faster). HSPA+ tends to vary wildly in download speeds. In addition to that, Wi-Fi tends to consume less battery. There are a lot of reasons to use Wi-Fi if it is available instead of HSPA+.
Take it as you will, that's just my advice.

I understand. I've been using my phone because I've been traveling and sometimes wifi is not an option. I use data a lot for my work. I do have a grandfathered unlimited.
I just got my wife the GSII Skyrocket on AT&T and her phone is getting much faster data than mine. She is averaging around 1 mbps faster download speeds but the real killer is her ping, which is consistently between 50-69 ms. Mine never goes below 100 ms. I am on the 4G plan and I am using the phone APN. Her phone has a different apn ("pta" instead of "phone"). I tried the pta apn but it wouldn't connect to data so maybe that is somehow reserved for phones with an LTE sim card? I'm really not sure but I want that faster speed. Any idea what is causing her to get better speeds? FYI before anyone asks we are NOT in an LTE area so both phones were on HSPA+ during my tests.
EDIT: I just tried again and her download speeds are double mine (mine was 3 she was over 6). I expect the AT&T phone to be slightly more optimized for their network but this is ridiculous. Something has to be wrong it can't be this much of a difference.

[Q] 3G: Simple Mobile vs T-mobile

I'm currently using Simple Mobile with $ 40 3G plan and my maximum 3G speed is 100 kbs. I know Simple Mobile is dependent on T-mobile's 3G tower but it seems Simple Mobile is slow for me.
I plan to switch to $ 50 data plan of T-mobile.
T-mobile users, what are the current maximum and minimum 3G speed of T-mobile ?
Depending on where you are, it should be a hell of a lot more than 100 kbps. T-Mo's HSPA+ areas theoretically can go up to 42 Mbps. My last few speedtests on the Vibrant (KB5 modem) in Mbps:
5.48 down 1.33 up
5.42 down 1.61 up
6.18 down, .41 up
3.98 down, .66 up
5.09 down, .38 up
3.90 down, 1.30 up

what's the advantage and disadvantage in using KB5 modem?
does KB5 modem increase 3G speeds in my simple mobile?
I too have let my contract expire with T-Mobile and went on with Simple Mobile, However I haven't seen any real difference between the two, meaning that T-Mobile was always slow for me and no matter what modems or configurations I tried, I never got the speed that others here are saying we should be getting.
Simple Mobile is using the same bandwidth as T-Mobile, because it is T-Mobile, so unless there was throttling or bandwidth restrictions that T-Mobile is implementing, based on the royalties or amount they pay T-mobile!!
Technically It should be the same as what the T-Mobile customers are getting, and In my case, I'm still getting the same ole slow assed data, that I had before when I was paying alot more to T-Mobile, I've been looking for a Holly Grail of tweaks, that might get my phone into the data performance I know Its capable of, but as of this moment, and after all this time, its still no better than Dial up, the only difference is I'm paying alot less than I was with TM.
Would love to find tweaks or configurations for my T959, that opens it up to some serious speed. And No I never DL anything enough month to month wise, to have them impose a CAP. But I'm so used to lag and poor performance, and the fact, that I wont ever go back to a CDMA provider again, So I'm stuck, unless I switch providers, like ATT which is serious $$, otherwise It would mean, putting my Vibrant in mothballs, And I love this phone, It takes the burden of running a laptop I used to need, to do the very same things I now accomplish with this phone, and simplifying my life, but with slow speed= Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!
Im also really interested to know!
Ok first thing first.
Both Tmobile and Simple Mobile does not provide unlimited 3g,
Tmobile (prepaid service that i use for 50 a month, a plan of relevance to the OP), provides 200mb of 3g service,
in this case, i would get 3mb speed, yet after the 200mb, they limit your service to 100 kbp range,
I have never used simple moblie before but i believe they use the same tower and provide more data, 2gig, and also cheaper,
so can someone tell me what varied data speed one would get for simple?
within 2 gig and after the capped data speed, thanx

I personally have been with simple for about a yr on both 4g and 3g speeds capped and uncapped
usually after you tether usb or wifi they will throttle you like almost that week and wont even know unless u call to be like wth
4g speeds are about the same as t-mobile
3g speeds are about 0.12Mbps even after changing from JK6 testing with different build props KA7 with different build props and even KB5 with different build props

To those simple mobile users with $ 40 monthly plan:
Will your 3G speed (128 kbs) will be lowered after you reach 2 GB ?
I have had both T-Mobile and Simple Mobile. I have a MyTouch 3GS and Vibrant. When on T-Mobile I usually was able to get ~1500 kbs however was paying $100/month for unlimited everything with a 5GB data throttle. After switching to Simple Mobile I am capped at ~120 kbs on either phone. My 3GS is running the latest CM7 nightly and my Vibrant is running ICS Passion 10.6. I have read on other forums that some users have complained to Simple Mobile and the support tech "reset" their internet and after, they received the download speeds closer to T-Mobile. I have contacted support twice and have yet to get that lucky. I mostly use WiFi therefore am happy with the $60/month saving.
3g?
I just moved to Simple mobile $40 plan. Their 3g speed is lower than t-mobile's 2g speed. On t-mobile 2g i had 130kbps and now on 3g I have 117kbps. Why they call it 3g speed plan.
Check out straight talk for 45 a month.. Just don't think it's unlimited data.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
if simple mobile gave at LEAST 1mbps d/l speeds, I'd switch to them.. I had them before and their data speeds are nearly unusable.. I heard their 4G plan gives great speed, but I can't afford that..
Have you try the $30 pre paid, Tmobile plan, give you 100 minutes, unlimited text, 5gb high speed (4g) data, then throttle down until renewal date,

So guys, here is my story so far.
I have been on Tmobile contract for a while and decided to switch to a Prepay plan. The "unlimited" plans offered by t mobile are overpriced(+highly throttled) so I looked else where.
I am currently using simple mobile, which started with the 40$ plan. Soon after I noticed that the 40$ unlimited plan was highly throttled to about 140kbs and had to switch to the 60$.
With the bill almost doubling and simple mobiles piece of crap* service, I did some research and found out that straight talk was coming out with a 45$ truly unlimited plan with no throttling for at&t and tmobile. Now I havn't used it yet but ordered the tmobile sim card. I have heard great things about the at&t $45 plan and will switch after this month is over.

Will you please give a review about Straight-Talk next month? Is that $45 tax-included?
Thank you.

Galaxy Note AT&T radio tweaks

Is anyone working on tweaking the AT&T Notes radio? I don't mean for TMobile, I mean so that HSPA+ as well as LTE are faster? The reason I ask, is I had/have an HTC HD2 that gets way better data transfer rates on 3g, than this phone does on HSPA+ in the same area. I have been able to hit 3-4Mbits down on this phone, and was getting 5-to almost 8 MBits on the HD2. (There have been a dozen plus radios on the HD2) The data speed on this Note is disappointing.

I easily get 10MB down on my this phone on HSPA+, which is the same as my last phone. I'd say there is something wrong with your phone.
HSPA+
Are you running a stock rom? Mines rooted, but otherwise stock. Also, are you on AT&T?

I've tested running completely stock, stock + rooted, and on The Collective Unofficial ROM.
Yes I am on AT&T.

I'm running into the same issues. I am thinking that since I am a long time AT&T unlimited user, I only have two options available:
Note: I already unlocked, then rooted the stock with Odin, did a back-up with
Titanium, did a nandroid back from the phone, and loaded the clockwork recovery into my phone so that I can load ROMS easier.
Options:
1. Subscribe to AT&Ts NEW service options and I will be subscribed to their
new HSPA+/LTE club (give up unlimited) without any problems.
OR
2. Don't subscribe to any of their new plans, and stay stuck with the Edge and
3G, and Unlimited data services, all while the phone falsely shows 4G at the top of the screen.
My fastest down speed has been around 6.5 MB - depending on where I am while 4G was being displayed on the phone.
It seems to me that the HSPA+/LTE requires a special subscription.
Network Mode does not appear on my phone, so I can't ensure that it
it has a 4G service selected. I was looking for a fix that would turn my Network Mode back on.
I can see a defaulted APN titled AT&T PTA, but it is locked from edits.
If I set my phone to that defaulted AT&T PTA everything works but data. SpeedTest immediately displays, "Try Again".
In my Elixir application, if I choose "Turn WiMax(4G) ON,
I get the following in Elixir:
=====Data======
State: DcInactiveState
disconnected with last try at 4:38 PM
fail because
SERVICE_OPTION_NOT_SUBSCRIBED
===============
So, I think that either we need to figure out how to turn Network Mode back on,
for the AT&T Notes, or give up unlimited and go with their new plan.
Some kind of way it seems like a subscription may be tied into allowing HSPA/LTE speeds.
You don't have to give up your grandfathered unlimited plan for HSPA or LTE. They just upgrade you to the 4G version of the unlimited plan.
You may have to do it in an actual AT&T store (not a dealer) or over the phone with customer care.
Also these phones don't have wimax...

I've been on the phone with a couple of reps., been into an AT&T shop a few times, and they all keep telling me that I have to upgrade to their new plan which does not have unlimited. The best they could offer me was a 5 GB plan. Also, they said I have never been on a smartphone plan with them. Although, I was previously using an HTC HD2 (sounds like a smartphone too me), but it was not a smartphone registered in their system. Records show that I'm a razor user.
They have no record of the unlocked phones that have been using like the HTC HD2. So now, when I take that SIM out of the HTC HD2 and slide it into the Note, I'm not getting 4G.
And finally, they said that if I was previously on one of their Smartphone plans I would be able to transfer to the LTE service.
When I zoom out and look at the big picture, I don't think most people have a need for the extra speed anyway.
Any thoughts... I think I am stuck with the Edge.
4g vs 3g
Don't bother upgrading. I had unlimited, and am now on their 5gb a month plan with tethering. and I am not getting any faster speeds. I seriously doubt it's the plan, and I am getting billed for 4g.

I think maybe I misread your earlier post. Do you mean that you have an AT&T Unlimited plan (calling minutes, etc) or AT&T unlimited data plan?
If you have a grandfathered unlimited data plan, they should upgrade you to the unlimited 4G data plan with the new SIM card.
If you have the Unlimited calling plan, then you might have to suck it up and get one of the capped data plans if you really want LTE.
Either way, to get the faster data speeds you would need a new SIM card. The older SIMs (even from last year in some cases) can't handle the faster LTE speeds and can cripple the data speeds on the phone to the point you are describing.
I have the unlimited data and calling plan. Reps. just told me straight out that I will lose the unlimited data. But after reading Cobra's post, I have no clue as to what the real trigger is for making HSPA+/LTE work on my phone.
Well, I'm getting ready to strip everything to see how ICS looks, and then go from there..
I guess Cobra there is still no answer. You switched and it is still slow, I did not switch and it is still slow. Does the LTE service really exist
p.s. I can't wait until I don't have to challenge the image verification. I cannot understand those &^&%^ letters

The reps are BSing you. I have a grandfathered unlimited plan & switched to a LTE unlimited plan by asking the rep to do it for me when I activated my I717. I came from a N7000 to an I717. Are you in a LTE area? I went from 3-6MB DL to 20-35ish MB DL, depending where I'm at.

Good grief.. I'll try again at a new location. I'll simply tell them that I want to change my current unlimited plan to the LTE unlimited plan. I am in the Wash, D.C. metro area. They act like an LTE unlimited plan doesn't exist.
Cobra are you in an LTE area? I wonder why your speeds aren't up there if you are in fact on the LTE plan.

Oh, they looked at the SIM too and said it was a current SIM.
If you can send me the description of the svc as on the invoice I would appreciate..

I just picked mine up yesterday. Upgraded from a Nexus One. I still have the old SIM, it's disabled. I purchased the phone at the ATT store. Comes with a NEW SIM or you won't get LTE speeds.
1. Other than the upgrade fee, my monthly bill is the same. I still have my unlimited data plan, only since I'm LTE now I don't get throttled until I hit 5G.
2. I get 25M DL, 8.5 UL at my house. I live in San Diego. (depending on where I am. I tried here at work and got **** for DL, right next to thousands of iPhone users)
If someone is telling you different, they are lying.

You guys got me feeling slighted over here Ok, I'm defintely going to follow-up again. I was wondering if your Nexus smartphone was a recognized AT&T phone. The pivotal point for grandfathering unlimited to LTE may be that they will do it only for THEIR phones that were previously recognized as smartphones. When they look up my records it comes back showing that I'm officially using one of their previous motorola razor phones, which at the time was not on a their smartphone plan, even though I was able to use the SIM in an unlocked non-AT&T HTC-HD2 without any problems.
So, maybe if you come from a recognized AT&T smartphone they will upgrade you, but if your last phone registered with them was not considered a smartphone while on an unlimited data plan, then they will not grandfather you in..
I gues it's worth another try.
p.s. thanks for helping me respond and overcome that *&^ image verification challenge

No. It has to be an "unlimited smartphone data plan". If you have that no matter what phone you are using, you can keep it. Usually you can tell by how much you are paying for the data plan. There was a "unlimited" plan for other non smartphones for like $20 for phones like the Razor etc but the smartphone plan for what were known previously as PDAs was like $39.
So which one do you have? I am pretty sure if you only have the unlimited non-smartphone plan you cannot convert that to a smartphone unlimited plan...
LTE
Yes, and I think there is a list of cities somewhere. Seattle area, as high tech as it is, does NOT have it yet, while smaller cities, and lower tech areas do? Doesn't make sense to me. So for now I am stuck with HSPA+
On my HD2, I had regular 3g speeds, then I did a radio change, and used the Rafpigna Froyo ROM, and suddenly I started getting speeds like my sig pic shows. My data is slower with this ROM, but from what I have been reading around the net, my speeds are pretty typical for a lot of the Notes on HSPA+
Forgot to mention that I installed the leaked ICS ROM, and it is very much worth doing. Data speed went up a little as well. Still not as much as my HD2 was though.

The speed of the network will always vary greatly. They are completely based on your proximity to the tower and the current load from other users on the tower. Unless you can find a tower with no other users on it and you can repeat the test from the exact same spot, there is no way to compare speeds between phones, or even the same phone at different locations.
If you find some threads where people are reporting their speeds, you will see that they vary by massive amounts.
I can say that I am still onthe unlimited data plan and on stock ROM I was getting 10Mbps. It must be your area because my last phone was hitting max capability on HSPA @ 7.2 Mbps.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Noteā„¢
Edit, just to clarify I went from a 3G only phone and finally got a 4G phone and I really don't thing they are trying to throttle your speeds just because you are on 4G with an unlimited data plan.
I was an AT&T rep from a long time ago (before cingular) and one thing that has held true is that all reps are told by corporate to push people into new plans no matter what. I was told as a rep by another rep that even something as swapping phones required new 2 year contracts which was and still is bull.
AT&T arbitrarily swapped my plan when I went from my G1 to a streak because they said I never was on a smartphone plan. I explained to them that I was on a blackjack and went to a G1 (paying $30 a month) and then I went to the streak. They told me tough luck and they were keeping me on the tiered data plan. I calmly asked for their manager, when I was transferred I exploded on the manager telling them that I call every time when I swap phones to make sure everything is good (not needing to upgrade my plan or anything) and that it was their screwup and if they're treating me like this I was going to leave. I promptly got an apology and asked for my current IEMI number and we were done. I threw in words and phrases like improper business practices, bait and switch and other such things. Managers have more "Say" on what they can do, you tend to get things taken care of because they just don't want to deal with you.
that's been my experience with AT&T, they're far from perfect, but if you start yelling and being upset, you're more likely to get what you want. Sad but true.
LTE
Nope, no LTE in Seattle yet. Only HSPA+ Seattle is very high tech, and yet, no LTE here. One of AT&T's major data centers is here as well. Hard to tell why they are slow rolling it out here.
I don't get to see the invoices. My wife works for AT&T, and gets those. She did tell me I am being billed for 4g though.
