[Q]Plans - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using a Vibrant on a tmobile network. For some reason today my 3g decided not to work. So i went on the Tmobile website and it told me that i needed a 4G plan for my vibrant. i chose the 30 dollars unlimited 3g but i also want texting. on the messing page they have:

Its not worth it right now chances of u even getting 4g in your area r slim. Besides the vibrabt isnt even set up for it. The tethering plan will boost your signal and think its only 15 a month

How is the tethering plan will boost your signal?
To the OP, did you go over 5GB of data in your billing cycle? Did you use your phone as a tether?

Huh?
Anyways, the so-called 4g does make a dramatic difference even with the Vibrant. Where I live, I went from around 1mbps down to 3-5mbps down (speed based on speedtest.net app). My ripoff p.o.s. ISP limits my speed to only 3mbps because I don't pay an extra 15-30 dollars a month. Recently I was downloading a large file, and out of curiosity I switched in the middle of downloading from my local ISP to tethering my phone via wifi. The download speed was around 1.66 times faster, peaking at speeds almost twice as fast. In other words, the speedtest.net results, which suggest hspa+ on my Vibrant is significantly faster than my 3mbps ISP, were validated.
Secondly, data plans cost the same regardless if you have access to hspa+ or not.

Well the 4G plan and the older one is currently the same price. I got unlimited because I will tether. i dont think i need the tethering plan because i have the wifi tethering thing on my vibrant.

I think the $10 text plan is only applicable for those who also have the unlimited android plan. I asked my t-mobile dealer about my text plan (after my added an unlimited android plan) and he reduced my monthly text rate (unlimited at $15 to $10).
I'm not 100% sure though

Dude seriously? Did you try rebooting your phone? You don't need to upgrade to any plan to continue using 3g. There's no such thing as a "4g plan" that makes your vibrants data speeds any faster. The dude's posting here are blowing smoke up your ass. My vibrant is using the $24 grandfathered plan (4G didnt exist then) and I've been hitting 5Mb's down and 1.5 up. You will see increased data speeds if your local network has been upgraded but that's it. If you lost 3G signal is could be because of weather or service issues in your area or your phone just needs to be restarted. Call t-mo back and switch back to your previous plan if it worked better for you financially. Once again, you will not see a speed boost from any plans that t-mo offers.

What good is LTE, unless low data user or "rich"?

Still not getting folks being so high up with LTE considering most people that inhabit these boards will use the alloted data in the first few days of the month
3G seems fine for me and streaming higher band video content is a battery hog anyway. Speed is nice but IMO, a $30 3G unlimited data plan seems a far more pratical option for most people.
Allotted data? What are you talking about? Correct me if i'm wrong but you are merely assuming that Verizon won't have an unlimited 4G data plan for smartphones. I have seen no information suggesting that there will be no unlimited plan available.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I hear that Verizon has plans to initially have unlimited LTE data plans for smartphones but they might change that in the future. I'm sure that Verizon's will throttle people's data if they reach 5 gb... Personally, I don't see why they don't simply charge extra for for LTE to allow it to be unlimited like Sprint does. I wouldn't mind paying 10 extra dollars a month for unlimited data from Verizon... I think that the problem with carriers is that they don't want people hogging their airwaves with their PS3, their laptop, and their little brother's iPod Touch tethered to the phone on their network with the "that's what your cable/dsl network is for" attitude. If they truly feel that way, they should start charging cable/dsl prices and remove the caps while using some of the money to build more towers so they won't have to worry about it. They have devices that they're getting ready to release that are capable of playing/streaming 1080p HD videos. I'd be pissed if I bought one of these smartphone//tablets and were only able two watch two or three videos the entire month. If they're gonna have devices that require a lot of bandwidth to reasonably perform to one's liking, the shouldn't release these devices until their networks are able to handle them being in the hands of the masses. It makes no sense to pay 40-50 dollars for internet at 4G speeds while paying 250-600+ for a device and have to go to find a hotspot to connect to wifi or connect to wifi at home.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
3G unlimited for $30 and LTE for $50 seems fare. That way, they get the revenue for folks using the service to update towers. I would say $40, but probably no way VZW would charge that for LTE.
If Verizon has unlimited LTE data for HTC Thunderbolt, they would get a lot of people to buy it. The question is would they get enough revenue to continue to keep it unlimited while upgrading their towers... It would be understandable if they put a 5 gb cap on the mobile hotspot feature because they wouldn't be able to sell their USB modems (which they charge mb and gb packages). But to not have unlimited LTE data from Verizon for a smartphone save the mobile hotspot feature is ridiculous imo. AT&T's LTE plans for the future include limited data and data speed to be purchased in tiers; Verizon can really keep them at bay with unlimited LTE data for strictly smartphones. The question is will Verizon compete directly with AT&T's LTE plans (match AT&T's plans). They reality is that they don't have to. They can make a more attractive unlimited LTE data plan and net more customers and "defectors" from AT&T while making them look like greedy money-hungry cornballs.

Good one, I want the Thunderbolt for the device and not so much for the LTE. That said, yes I can sit here at the office and run our LTE USB and get 20 - 25 mbps and run up 5 gigs in short fashion then really start paying out the wazoo, but RevA EVDO at 2 mbps I can do just fine watching HULU or teathering Skype with video or whatever which is fast enough. I might give a few bucks more for the LTE if it is unlimited, but never buy myself into a plan that caps my data and makes me pay more just to get a speed boost that I just do not need now.
If 3g would actually give me the speed its supposed to I wouldn't need 4g at all. I rarely get over 200kbps down on att's hspa network.
That would be dumb for them to charge same price as current data. How do they justify the 4G investment? that would be one red looking net present value business case
My guess is $45 (30 +15 premium).

Iphone 2G data Plan on Galaxy s2

Hi,
I tried the iphone 2G trick to get Unlimited data (2G).
I get it, and put back the sim in my SGS2.
And it still get the speed of HSPA
Weird
is it safer now to move to Personal Smartphone dataplan (30 vs 20)
What's the iPhone 2G trick? It'd still be HSDPA speeds as that's what the SIM allows. The phone is restricted to to 2G and the carried will be able to see what speeds you're getting and move you to a limited package if you're not careful.

Att can call it whatever they want. But for unlocked devices you get unlimited data 2g/3g/H/H+ on your device depending on your carrier and whats available in your area.
I could have got the unlimited non-smartphone plan but I stuck with the 2g iphone plan just incase I ever get an att device I will still have grandfathered unlimited data.
To be on safe side incase you ever use your att upgrade, switch to the grandfathered unlimited 30 plan.
I can't tell from his post but he may be on AT&T in the U.S. They have a dumb-phone unlimited data plan that you can use on a smartphone as long as they don't have the phone's IMEI in their database. A lot of us in the U.S. are using it with the SGS2 and getting HSPA+ speeds for $20 a month including unlimited MMS. Helps offset the ridiculous prices we've paid for the phone.
To future proof your data plan, I would say ge the $30 data plan or stay on the unlimited 2g iphone plan.
There is no point of the iphone 2g trick, if you switch to dumbphone plan.
Sorry, yes i am in us with ATT
Ok I see, so as long as the IMEI is not in ATT database, so i can use it.
If one day our cheer SGS2 has it IMEI in ATT, so my plan may be revoke in worst case or will be grandfather.
So if i want to futur proof at 100% it is better to go to the $30 smartphone plan (I still have my inspire)
Thx
There absolutely no chance att will have an unlocked version uk or anyother non att branded phone in there database.
The only few phones(and small %) were unlocked nexus one and dell streak imei were in att database.

2.37 down, 1.01 up
2.97 down, 1.13 up.

your right, it does vary quite a bit. i was able to get a few 4-5 pulls, then a few 3-4 pulls. So that is fine, still faster then what i am coming from at almost any given time.

so how much data we can use before we get throttled or cap ?

A lot more than tmobile (who has a 2gb cap before they throttle you).
Before july 7th the unlimited data plan for $30 will have no cap which is a big plus for people who live in a 4g area. Starting on the 7th new customers will have to pick data packages what start with 2gb a month for $20 or $30. New plans suck.

Currently with T-Mobile, they don't throttle you until you reach 5 gb. Some plans are different but being with T-Mobile for several years and NEVER been throttled, my plan is 5 gb. I am also going to switch to Verizon to take advantage of their data plan before they change.

Verizon's official position is that they may throttle those that are in the top 5% of data users, esp during peak data usage times. Only been with them a couple of weeks so not sure how hard ass they are. Haven't seen anyone complain.
I've only used about 4gb so far in 2 weeks.
I've been using about 10-15 gigs a month for the last 3 years and have never seen any cap,I'm sure they will start it when the new pricing plans start but I plan to keep my service the way it is.
Posted from my Nokia V560
I have also been told by Verizon employees that plans in place before 7/7/11 will be grandfathered. If you don't have a VZW data plan yet but have been considering it, pull the trigger before the 7th.
I have not been able to confirm that the unlimited cap on grandfathered plans will be "for life" but this has been the general consensus from what I've heard.
so there is no data throttling on verizon as of now ! cause i might just use about 10 -15 gb of 4g in a month.
verizon throttles but that was 3G... not sure if that applies to 4G... yet.
6.6gb in third week and haven't been throttled. unlike the tmobile where i got throttled to 56k speeds.
I have never heard this 5% thing before. I am on a 3g only area and can say my data is getting throttled pretty rough. Been days since I got solid speeds and my girlfriends dinc, my old phone, is getting way better speeds. I am currently over 4.5 gb this month and she is under 2.5

Good god what do you people do to use that much data? If I TRY to use a lot, I may use 4gb in a MONTH! I just don't find out practical to watch full movies on my phone... Sure a youtube video every now and then, but not a WHOLE movie. Talk about a battery killer...

Recently, in order to save battery whenever im home which is most of the time i switch off the 3G network and go on wifi. Since I dont have 4G coverage near my home yet its much better than running of 3G. not only has it been lowering my data usage which is small to begin with but been making my battery last forever. even on my extended battery.
I have a boring job and no super vision. plus I tether a lot...
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Well data flies when you tether,a movie on the phone might only be 300mb but the same flick on a pc it 2gb,anyway since I have been a vzw slave I have bounced as much a 20gb but average 10-15gb,i drive a truck and this is my internet,as far as speeds go some 3g markets are slow some are fast but I have never seen it throttled,as far as 4g goes fastest I have seen is phoenix, slowest was oklahoma city, los angeles is consistant all over the valley.
Posted from my Nokia V560
I just switched to verizon yesterday after learning this so that I would be grandfathered in. I spoke to 2 different store reps and 1 online rep and they all confirmed that data usage is 100% unthrottled and uncapped if you sign up before the 7th. Now I imagine there is some fine print which says if you use 50GB in a month they can throttle you if they wish, but obviously this is well above and beyond anyone's usage pattern.
On tmobile I was routinely hitting the 2GB cap without doing much at all. I stream a lot of music while I drive, and email a lot of 5MP pictures to myself to watch on my computer so I dont have to worry about a USB cable. I also surf on my lunch break and in the evenings on the couch. I can use about 1GB a week doing this.
I think im getting throttled. my 3g used t be much faster.

Go download speedtest and tell us what you get. Make sure you are doing this in a known good area.
I used over 70GB the first month this was out and never got throttled and still don't(Didn't have internet for that month so my phone became the internet). So its a good bet its quite high and will stay there for the unlimited people. >1MB/sec upload speeds <3 for torrents

[Q] 3G: Simple Mobile vs T-mobile

I'm currently using Simple Mobile with $ 40 3G plan and my maximum 3G speed is 100 kbs. I know Simple Mobile is dependent on T-mobile's 3G tower but it seems Simple Mobile is slow for me.
I plan to switch to $ 50 data plan of T-mobile.
T-mobile users, what are the current maximum and minimum 3G speed of T-mobile ?
Depending on where you are, it should be a hell of a lot more than 100 kbps. T-Mo's HSPA+ areas theoretically can go up to 42 Mbps. My last few speedtests on the Vibrant (KB5 modem) in Mbps:
5.48 down 1.33 up
5.42 down 1.61 up
6.18 down, .41 up
3.98 down, .66 up
5.09 down, .38 up
3.90 down, 1.30 up

what's the advantage and disadvantage in using KB5 modem?
does KB5 modem increase 3G speeds in my simple mobile?
I too have let my contract expire with T-Mobile and went on with Simple Mobile, However I haven't seen any real difference between the two, meaning that T-Mobile was always slow for me and no matter what modems or configurations I tried, I never got the speed that others here are saying we should be getting.
Simple Mobile is using the same bandwidth as T-Mobile, because it is T-Mobile, so unless there was throttling or bandwidth restrictions that T-Mobile is implementing, based on the royalties or amount they pay T-mobile!!
Technically It should be the same as what the T-Mobile customers are getting, and In my case, I'm still getting the same ole slow assed data, that I had before when I was paying alot more to T-Mobile, I've been looking for a Holly Grail of tweaks, that might get my phone into the data performance I know Its capable of, but as of this moment, and after all this time, its still no better than Dial up, the only difference is I'm paying alot less than I was with TM.
Would love to find tweaks or configurations for my T959, that opens it up to some serious speed. And No I never DL anything enough month to month wise, to have them impose a CAP. But I'm so used to lag and poor performance, and the fact, that I wont ever go back to a CDMA provider again, So I'm stuck, unless I switch providers, like ATT which is serious $$, otherwise It would mean, putting my Vibrant in mothballs, And I love this phone, It takes the burden of running a laptop I used to need, to do the very same things I now accomplish with this phone, and simplifying my life, but with slow speed= Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!
Im also really interested to know!
Ok first thing first.
Both Tmobile and Simple Mobile does not provide unlimited 3g,
Tmobile (prepaid service that i use for 50 a month, a plan of relevance to the OP), provides 200mb of 3g service,
in this case, i would get 3mb speed, yet after the 200mb, they limit your service to 100 kbp range,
I have never used simple moblie before but i believe they use the same tower and provide more data, 2gig, and also cheaper,
so can someone tell me what varied data speed one would get for simple?
within 2 gig and after the capped data speed, thanx

I personally have been with simple for about a yr on both 4g and 3g speeds capped and uncapped
usually after you tether usb or wifi they will throttle you like almost that week and wont even know unless u call to be like wth
4g speeds are about the same as t-mobile
3g speeds are about 0.12Mbps even after changing from JK6 testing with different build props KA7 with different build props and even KB5 with different build props

To those simple mobile users with $ 40 monthly plan:
Will your 3G speed (128 kbs) will be lowered after you reach 2 GB ?
I have had both T-Mobile and Simple Mobile. I have a MyTouch 3GS and Vibrant. When on T-Mobile I usually was able to get ~1500 kbs however was paying $100/month for unlimited everything with a 5GB data throttle. After switching to Simple Mobile I am capped at ~120 kbs on either phone. My 3GS is running the latest CM7 nightly and my Vibrant is running ICS Passion 10.6. I have read on other forums that some users have complained to Simple Mobile and the support tech "reset" their internet and after, they received the download speeds closer to T-Mobile. I have contacted support twice and have yet to get that lucky. I mostly use WiFi therefore am happy with the $60/month saving.
3g?
I just moved to Simple mobile $40 plan. Their 3g speed is lower than t-mobile's 2g speed. On t-mobile 2g i had 130kbps and now on 3g I have 117kbps. Why they call it 3g speed plan.
Check out straight talk for 45 a month.. Just don't think it's unlimited data.

I have been on Tmobile contract for a while and decided to switch to a Prepay plan. The "unlimited" plans offered by t mobile are overpriced(+highly throttled) so I looked else where.
I am currently using simple mobile, which started with the 40$ plan. Soon after I noticed that the 40$ unlimited plan was highly throttled to about 140kbs and had to switch to the 60$.
With the bill almost doubling and simple mobiles piece of crap* service, I did some research and found out that straight talk was coming out with a 45$ truly unlimited plan with no throttling for at&t and tmobile. Now I havn't used it yet but ordered the tmobile sim card. I have heard great things about the at&t $45 plan and will switch after this month is over.

Thank you.

Its data on there network, how do u propose to hide it? Also u are unlimited, just throttled. They arnt limiting the amount of data. Common Sense?
Want to hide your data usage from AT&T? Use wifi.
There is a way to hide the data u tether thats why i wondered if there was an app for hiding the actual amount that we use....... I guess not thank u all for ur time and explanations

You can't hide ANY data while using their network. All you can do is hide the fact that you ARE tethering, not that you're using extra data all of a sudden.

Just to play devils advocate here:
By throttling they technically are limiting the amount of data. If you can only download at .3Mbps that means you are only able to download ~97GB in a 30 day period. Say you get throttled for the last week of your billing cycle that means you can only download 22GB that week. This is opposed to the ~260GB you could download on HSPA, the ~590GB you could download in a week at HSPA+ speeds, and the ~2.2TB you could download in a week at LTE speeds.
Yes this does prove there is no such thing as an unlimited plan, but it does prove that they are limiting the amount of data you can download in a given period of time.

That's a good point. I'm sure that would work if someone wanted to take AT&T to small claims court. But then again as long as I've had "unlimited" through them, there was always a 5GB cap that was spelled out in the fine print of my contract. The only exception to that was for iPhone users. That's the only reason I switched to an iPhone a couple years back.
What contract? There is no contract for data, only for voice. There are Terms of Service but no contract.

Take them to small claims court. They've already lost once before recently for throttling. http://consumerist.com/2012/03/att-writes-check-to-victor-in-small-claims-court-suit.html
I just exceeded the 5G limit and they lowered my speeds down to 0.60mbps or lower at some points.... they said my speedz will be back when my next billing cycle starts

That's because sprint and Verizon's 3g blows. 3g on ATT is faster than Wimax 4g for sprint in most areas.

that really sucks that they're limiting you, I assume you're in a busy area and that's going to be expected. Like one of the other posters suggested, try using WiFi. If I recall you can cruise to any place that has AT&T wifi and get it free (like starbucks and McDonalds and sams club) and do your major downloading there. I know that isn't on the go, but if you want a coffee, it isn't the worst suggestion.
I have had the same question for awhile now. I am using Simple mobile 4G unlimited data (so they so boldly advertize until they shut you down). I really wanted to take advantage of the "Mobile on the go". In my vehicle I have Bluetooth that would allow me to stream music on the go (On my long commute through Houston everyday), or use Netflix on that long tripe with the family & tether to my Tablet to take care of business, stream, movies. You get the point.
As for down loading, I am not sure why you would want to do any major downloading through a phone anyway. Using your home network is much better for major downloading.
This is my experience with ATT Unlimited Data Plan:
I got grandfathered into the unlimited data plan through my old iphone original, if my memory serves me correct. I don't use data heavily like some of you do and I tether infrequently. Last summer, we were at a community swimming pool where we live and I let my daughter to tether to my Samsung android phone. My daughter at the time had an iphone 3gs. About two weeks later, I got a nasty message from att telling me that they noticed that I was tethering and that they will put me on an appropriate data plan if I don't call them back. So, I called and played dumb and they told me that if I ever tether again, they will go ahead and terminate my unlimited data plan.
I received a Samsung Note 10.1 (model #8013) for christmas, and guess what? I have tethered the tablet to my android phone, thinking they won't notice the android traffic coming from an android phone. I have been careful, not downloading tablet-specific apps from the play store and such. Also, I only tether when there's no wifi, it's the last resort. It's been over a month and I haven't heard from them. I am sure ATT is chomping at the bits to get me so they can get rid of one more unlimited data user.
Am I committing a fraud? Maybe. I'd like to think I am engaging in a civil disobedience against an unjust power.
Isn't AT&T also committing a fraud, when they are advertisizing "unlimited" when in fact there's a limit?
The amount of data is unlimited. And they do warn you if you go above a certain amount they will throttle you down. And they let you know the plan is for one phone only and offer you a tethering add-on. They offer thousands of free hotspots for heavy downloaders and give you an app to find them.
Its their superhighway - you just pay the tolls and follow the rules. You don't like them, but it's not fraud on their part.
