[Q] 3G & WiFI OR WiFi only?!? - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

I like the sound of the Flyer but am thinking of which to get...
I already have a Desire HD so can use it as a wireless hotspot so was thinking of getting the Flyer in the WiFi only version but I'm put off a little by it only being 16Gb where as the 3G enabled is 32Gb!
Any thoughts on the 'Watch' app???
Basically I'm not sure and am seeking help and your thoughts on the subject...

Hard to say but I was thinking the same thing you are. I have a Tmobile data plan so the Euro 3G flyer would've worked for me. I can tell you why I chose the wifi only model and maybe that will help.
The 3G model is super expensive so that was the main reason i didn't get it. I figured that with the wifi only version i can just get a hotspot device and save money on future devices too. Now that being said the 3G model can act as a hotspot too...
Sorry. I'm betting that wasn't much help. I think you will be happy either way.

I got the 3g one mainly down to that the only one they had loving it, can't wait till root, so I can play with phone.apk

question about data plan on Amaze.

So, after much thought I decided to keep the phone and give it a second go and might sell my 9700 to make some cash. However, as I am not sure 100% of this, I thought that maybe I could keep both. Questions is, when I had an iPhone, I also had a my 9700 and had of course a BB plan. Even if the phone was running on EDGE only, I still could pop my SIM and check the web, even if sloooooooow. How come I can't web brows or anything on the Amaze? Is it because of the 4G?
Thanks, I am basically trying to figure out if I can have one data plan where I can use both phones, possibly.

The carrier may have made changes on the network to prevent you from using a non-Blackberry device on a BES or BIS data plan.
I had an issue in the past using a SIM from a BlackBerry (broken) while waiting on a replacement in a Sony Ericsson, within two days I built up $140 worth of data charges due to an "unauthorized" device accessing data through a BlackBerry plan...weird but it was a learning experience to say the least.

If using a BB plan or grandfathered plan, 4g phones does not work. I use to have one of those 5.99 plans. didn't work with any 4g phones. They are able to detect what phone you're using and block it or something.
I noticed the very first time i used it, the phone's data worked, but then about an hour or 2 in, it stopped working.
I am on a Value Plan, and I could switch between BB and iPhone without issues. I think it might be the new SIM I got when I got the Amaze. Possible?
The Amaze and GSII need the newest GBA sims I believe

no it's not the sim, I'm on the old sim and it works fine. You need to be on a 4g plan to get 4g with 4g devices. The old plans and bb plans do not work. They block it somehow.

The new SIM as I understand it, is for wifi calling. I used my old sim from my old curve in both my optimus-t and amaze without issue.

No, I had WiFi calling before too. I also think its the 4G question. Its the only logical explanation so far...
its because blackberry uses real basic apns that you can program into the iPhone and the amaze does not use those the combination of the bis blackberry server apns will prevent it unlocked phones can be made to function on almost any apn but locked devices cannot unless you try manually changing the apns. I'd just stick with one phone so your mms and internet work right without having to change them all the time
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using XDA App
If your gonna try to change the amazes, you would have to use either wap.voicestream.com although I don't recommend this one at all or internet2.voicestream.com be aware the performance of your data may vary changing it seeing as sometimes they decomission old apns not used theres a blackberry specific that you could Google that may work well but I don't remember I haven't looked up someones blackberry data settings in a while

All my phones are unlocked but I do see what you are saying it makes sense.
Good one.
Yup good luck if you speak with technical care n ask nicely maybe they would tell you what apn you can use with your blackberry data plan to use an iPhone from time to time and just change that in your amaze, if i was at work I'd look it up for you.

Nah thanks a lot.
I sold the iPhone 3G a while back, and might sell the BB too, and stick with the Amaze anyways.
I was just curious on why... Geeky stuff, you know.
Oh word well there you have each data plan has certain ones that provision with it, you just gotta use the right one

Why do people want a 3g tablet with all these 4 LTE phones.

What is the big deal of a 3g prime I tether at 4 LTE speeds all day.

Europe doesn't have LTE And tether sucks battery faster than any game
But I don't need any kind of mobile connectivity anyway on my Prime, HSPA tether is enough

Yea, I hotspot from my phone now, but if money was no object I'd prefer the setup I previously had with my xoom.

It would be nice, if money was no object. But given that it is, I'm happy tethering my phone; I don't have cause to use my tablet outside of Wi-Fi enabled areas enough to warrant another data plan.
in maine we will not have 4 lte anytime soon, so up here getting some thing lte is a waste.
Because companies like Verizon and At&t limit you to 2GB a month and there's no way you could share the connection with your phone AND tablet for a whole month and not go over that limit?
3G tablet plans cost too much. I just tether to my Galaxy Note as well.
My area doesn't have LTE support. The service providers only just installed new towers a few months ago, and before that my devices were struggling for a signal. What's the point in an LTE device if the most you'll get is hspa?
Sent from Silent Earth 3
I am with T-Mo so LTE is not an option, though speeds are acceptable. I would be willing to shell out a bit for 3G on the tablet for the convenience factor. Since I already have a wi-fi only TP though I am not going to buy another tablet just for 3G.

Prior to my contract with Verizon its unlimited and they offer 10 gigs for $50 now which is more than enough. Downloading avg of 18mb a sec its wonderful. Tethering is a dream with my gaze rooted.

It depends on how you use your tablet. If you're home or around places with decent Wi-Fi 80% of the time I agree with you. I travel a lot and anyone who does knows you can't depend on Wi-Fi. At hotels, restaurants, or airports.
So you can either get a 3/4G tablet or tether. Tethering is a pain in the ass. Get out the phone, turn on sharing, connect the tablet, disconnect the tablet, turn off sharing. Forget the latter any your phone's battery is hosed. It's hosed anyway because you can literally watch it run down when Wi-Fi sharing's enabled.
Here's some of the advantages of 3/4G:
- Your tablet's always online and can receive e-mails and messages continually.
- You can just flip it open and use it without having to wait for a gazillion background process to all finish competing for the Wi-Fi signal at the same time.
- Your phone's battery is spared the torture of Wi-Fi (or BT) sharing so it's available for calls when you need it.
- You can split your data across multiple devices. For $20 a month on AT&T (they think it's a non-smartphone) my tablet uses 6ishGB of data. I use 4-6GB on my phone too. I'd get flagged and put on a tiered plan if I didn't have seperate devices so it's actually cheaper to have two data plans.
While it's not for everybody it has its advantages. I wouldn't personally own a non-3/4G tablet.
A dialogue between me and my employer.
Employer: Why didn't you get a tablet with 3G/4G built in?
ME:*holding up phone* Do you want to expense two data plans?
Employer: Point taken.
I can leave my wifi tether on literally all day and do very little harm to the battery. Tmobile G2 (HSPA+ 15down2up)
Also there is no conflict with Tmobile's data and phone services. I can answer a call without interrupting my connection.
The trick is to be reasonable about your expectations.
IE: dont stream HD youtube all day, or you'll kill the phone.
I use a 4G (has 3G support) Hotspot device instead of buying additional data plans for various devices.
While I could tether to my phone which is still 3G, when I am in the field, I normally need my phone while using data at the same time and tether would also reduce the battery of the phone quicker as well.
With the 4G hotspot, I can tether up to 5 devices at the same time which includes not only tables, slates, netbooks, notebooks, regular desktops with a WiFi adapter but also even my phone which still has 3G.
In my field kit, I carry a battery unit which will power the 4G hotspot for more than 14 hours continuously, so I can do data for longer than most of the device I could connect to it without AC power.
I can and have many times provided data access to people who were with me who had only WiFi enabled devices securely as well.
Most of the time, I just turn the hotspot on, and stick it in my pocket and have hi-speed Wifi available where I am walking.
I don't use free Unsecure WiFi hotspots.. only secure WiFi connections

FoxFi

ok so look i know this is an app, but lets be honest how many of you actually go in that sub forum?
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.foxfi
foxfi is a new wifi tether app that promises no root required, is free, and claims to have a fairly high rate of allowing tablets to connect. saw it in the e4gt forums and figured you guys might like to know . it claims most moto phones, gf is on hers so i cant verify if photon is one of them :/...
edit: ok just tested, tethered my e4gt to my gf's photon XD
no hacks or nothing needed we are both unrooted stock, it didnt like trying to tether with 4g tho, so its 3g speeds only :/
Sweet find for those who aren't rooted!

I know you said no root required, but will it work on a stock rom and if so, will a carrier still be able to see if you are tethering like they can if you use wifi hotshot on a stock rom?

fyi....I just had total success with foxfi generating a hotspot for an ipad 2 and a transformer prime tablet from a Droid Global 2.

my gf's photon is stock 198_7, works fine... as for if sprint knows i guess we will find out when our next bill comes huh?
I tried it on a photon running 198-7, flashed fresh this afternoon, rooted, unlocked bootloader with CWM applied. No go. FoxFi appears to initiate the stock hotpot app which in turn results in the IP registration error you get when launching the stock app. Tried with wifi on, but not connected, and with wifi off both suggested as troubleshooting steps by FoxFi.
Curious what others are experiencing using a blur rom
yea it will give taht error, but from what ive seen let it sit for 3-4 mins and it will finally re-register

My Photon
I have also made the connection on my Photon at 3g speeds. Is there anything at all that can be done to make it work at 4G speeds. My 4G does not disconnect when I am using it as a mobile hotspot. It appears that it is the FoxFi app and not the actual phone causing this issue.
Moto Photon Foxfi only in 3G mode and Alternative 4G tethering
I too believe that it is FoxFi that is causing the disconnection in the 4G signal when trying to activate it on the Motorola Photon (MB855). An alternative would just to grab your USB cable connect your laptop directly to your phone and get PdaNet app (I know this works on Windows with an Android Phone) and you can connect to the 4G. (with great speed too, I have gotten 1+ MB/s downstream) It's not wireless but at least it won't kill your battery and you can charge your phone at the same time!
And if you feel bad because all your friends stare you down because you are the only one connected you can get Virtual Router from codeplex website and you can turn your laptop into a hotspot
hopefully there will be a fix or a different application that does not require root
feel free to pm me with suggestions or questions

I got an update from PDAnet and FOXFI was the update and it works great. I have a Droid 3 and am not rooted.
Does it work with 4G? Or 3G.

It works with 3G on my Droid3.
I'm rooted on my SE4GT, and pc sees Android34, but cannot connect.
I disconnected 4G also.
In FoxFi, in the upper right hand corner, there are Bytes that keep flashing from 1K/316 to 1K/0 etc. Don't know if that's an issue, whether the app is activated or not.
this is working great for me......I'm stock rooted on ek02. haven't checked 4g, but 3g works like a champ. i didn't have to modify anything.... i can imagine it probably won't be on the Android market long.
My acer a500 tablet see's the connection fine
It does not work on Xperia Play for Verizon. Hotspot starts but when connected to takes you to Verizon's hot spot page.

[Q] Ad-hoc Connection with Evo LTE?

Hello all,
From other ICS devices I own and follow (and don't worry I know all about the wpa_supplicant) I was wondering if anyone has been successful in sharing their laptops internet with the phone?
Case: I at work have an unrestricted internet line, I can't connect a wireless router but I could share my internet via the wireless of my laptop (ad-hoc). Has anyone succeeded in doing this?
Thank you.
I have using WiFi tether

Anyone get Ad-hoc Working?
I was about to ask this question in a new post but found this during my search. So I have my Evo LTE and it has PAINFUL 3G signal (50k) so I was hoping to try to tether to my Ipad 3g (i know I know, its an apple product), but its 3g gets like 3-4meg download on speedtest. I've done some research and have tried to replace my wpa_supplicant and it just locks up my wifi so i had to revert back.
Being an early adopter, I left my trusty OG Evo Wimax and waiting patiently for LTE for Seattle...but that's not coming till next year (I'm hoping sooner but I'm not holding my breathe)
anywho, hope someone can help me/everyone out. Thanks!:angel:

Don't count on a answer. I posted one up awhile back and it never got answered. My workaround is to install HTC sync and use internet passthrough and if you need internet on another device just WiFi tether ur internet passthrough

At&t Htc One X 4G problems

Yeah we recently purchased a Htc One X an was loving the phone an then out of nowhere it stoped picking up a 4g signal it will connect to wifi without problem if it's avalible We have spent countless hours tring to figure out the problem an have some up with nothing tried changeing the apn an several other things we have came a cross but still no luck wondering if it's the phone or what the deal is if there is a fix to this problem if i wanted to only pick of wifi could have bought a nice laptop for what he phone cost any help would be much appricated
Is it just 4G that is broken, or is it 3G as well?
If no data is working, try toggling airplane mode, resetting APN to default, and make sure data and the antenna are both enabled, and if none work, try flashing a RUU.
If none work, it is most likely best to get a replacement.
