Friend got a new Droid x2. Path that got us here:
1. rooted using Gingerbreak
2. installed Titanium Backup, and removed "unused" programs
3. contacts now force closes
4. titanium backup won't restore missing system apps
5a. get copy of x2 /app/ directory from here:
Droid X2 system dump, wallpapers, ringtones - Android Forums
5b. copied all files from .zip above into a new directory
5c. copied all files from my droid x2s /app/ directory into directory from above, overwriting any that already exist
5d. copy the combined files back to my x2's /app/ directory
6. reboot... again and again and again
I'm guessing it's a permissions issue... but is there any way out of it? other than waiting for a .sbf?
When booting the x2 in 'fastboot' mode, it shows up in Windows as "mot single adb interface", however, "adb devices" doesn't list any...
try this fastboot it works for me
Sorry... Fastboot is brand new to me... What should I do with it?
I was in a bootloop after I got done using gingerbreak, and all I did was a hard reset on the device thru recovery. It fixed it right up.

I'm not trying to shut you down for chiming in. I'm truly interested if you do have any img files for the X2 as I have a unit stuck at the moto logo myself.
Android recovery won't fix it and it won't respond to adb so my only alternatives are fastboot or rsd lite which require an img file or sbf file respectively. I'm not even sure the X2 would allow a copied boot.img to be flashed in fastboot.
So please don't take offense to my question -- I'm just trying to learn more myself.
Progress? I guess we are able to (attempt to) run an update.zip file... but the update.zip file I found online saying it was for an x2 was actually for the original droid X.
Does anyone think it's possible to create my own update.zip file for the x2 that resets permissions on the files I copied over?

The only way you can flash an update.zip is if it is signed. You can try creating one but since it is not a signed zip I doubt that it will be able to be flashed.

Not surprisingly, I think it needs to be signed by Verizon/Motorola. I created a very simple update.zip and signed it myself using openssl with no luck.
I've been running eclipse with no problems, i switched to molten today and couldn't get the wifi to work so i tried to switch to affinity it successfully installed with tenfars bootstrap but it is stuck in the molten boot loop. any help will be appreciated
if you made a nandroid backup you should be able to get into recovery by turning phone off and just plug it into wall charger. them you can restore backup. if not you will need to sbf

On the contrary. It will if you have used the bootstrap recovery app to boot to recovery mode but never went back and set it to charge only in the app.
In other words, once you boot to recovery using the app, it will always boot to recovery when the phone is off and you plug it in. If, after you've booted to recovery, you reboot and then go back in to the bootstrap app and set it to charge only, then it will only charge the phone when it's off and you plug it in. That's how it works for me anyway.

I agree. Even if I have installed BSR before shutting it off and plugging it in has never resulted in BSR for me I install BSR every time for it to work.

You shouldn't have to install it each time. Once you've installed it all you should have to do is open the app and click reboot recovery (or whatever). After that, it should work as I described.

not sure why. I am on eclipse 1.3 and I just bootlooped the other day. I pulled my battery and put it back in. plugged it into the wall and it booted into recovery. then I restored my backup. I wonder if bootstrap being built into the rom had something to do with it.

We've tested and can confirm this bootstrap recovery is working. Thank you to bane449 for testing. The recovery is a straight APK pull from the Droid X2. Worked thanks to the similarities between devices.

CWM allows users to easily install unsigned update packages. This will open up the Photon to pseudo-ROMs, all sorts of modifications, and more.
Forgive my ignorance but what is a "pseudo-Rom"?

Psuedo meaning "not really" a ROM. A locked bootloader will prevent true custom ROMs, but P-ROMs will be possible.
P-ROMs are based off of stock files and modifications. They don't replace the kernel or modem.
Yup i installed this and rebooted into recovery mode. It worked just fine for me. What happens if Sprint releases an OTA update? Can i recover root access or downgrade with this? Sounds like I can't because I can't modify the kernel.

I can't seem to get mine to reboot into CWM. I run the apk, hit install recovery, says installed sucessfully, hit recovery mode and it reboots back into system.

Make sure your device is plugged into the wall charger when you do Reboot Recovery. That's the only way it'll work since it's a bootstrap recovery.

Can you explain why this is? I'm a little confused as to what makes a "bootstrap recovery" different from a regularly flashed "recovery.img".

Caveats:
This is not a *real* recovery. The way this recovery works is by hijacking portions of your boot process during system initialization and starting into recovery instead. So, if you hose your system *COMPLETELY* you will need to SBF. Specifically, if your logwrapper, logwrapper.bin, or hijack binary are missing from /system/bin, you will be screwed.
This is from koush himself concerning droid x/2 bootstrap. I would seriously wait til an sbf surfaces before flashing any of these "psuedo-ROMS" or even just deleting any system apk's. Just my opinion.

Does the phone need to be rooted first in order to installl this recovery apk?
Is this "ClockworkMod" recovery, or something else? If it's CWM, what version?
So what specifically did this do to my phone? What files were modified to allow this to run at bootup? Anybody have any info on this (just in case I want to return my phone to stock.)

This is CWM bootstrap. Original one was on the Droid X, created by Koushik Dutta. Then it was ported to the Defy. Then to the Atrix. Next, the Droid X2. Now, the Photon 4G.

Sbf is gonna be your friend when it comes to unrooting and restoring. It will pop up soon.

I'm currently running Eclipse v1.0. I thought I was running v1.1 but sysinfo shows 1.0 even though I ran the 1.1 patch.
So I was going to go ahead and run the 1.1 patch for the HDMI mirroring.
So I go to my app tray hit system recovery, install recovery, allow SU, click OK once installed, plug into the wall charger, give it a sec, hit recovery mode, wait for my phone to reboot into recovery.....
well it all appears to be working until it goes to reboot, it just doesn't come back on. Just sits there with the power off, I've waited 3 mins for it, but nothing no moto screen no nothing.
I've tried this about 5x now.
I wanted to reinstall recovery, but it must of been cooked in the ROM cause I cannot uninstall it......
I did read through some of the pages on the Eclipse rom but didn't notice anyone with this problem, must be me.
Any ideas?
** EDIT ** hmmmm
Well, I just found out something new.
While my phone was powered completely off from trying to boot into recovery while I was typing this, I went to turn it on, pushed the power button then decided I would put my BH6X back in to fully charge (BH5x in now) so I pulled the battery on the M screen and it continued to boot, with no battery, now im in the system recovery......
So apparently no battery is needed, and for some reason I can install recovery, but cannot reboot into it. But since its installed and I have AC power I can pull battery and force boot it?
weird.....

Yeah, I can get into recovery by plugging in my phone to wall charger while its off.
I've always just plugged it into a wall charger, went to my system recovery app, clicked install recovery, then clicked recovery mode, waited for it to boot into recovery..... is that not right?....

That's what the instructions in recovery say. Only thing i can think of is to uninstall system recovery and reinstall it. Doubt it will work but worth a shot. This can be done with a file explorer w/ root access, i.e. root explorer or es file explorer. They're located in /system/app
Edit: you can also remove Any system app with titanium backup as well as the file explorers.

Yeah, first thing I tried to do was uninstall..... wouldnt let me...
Ill try it with root explorer....
was going to just reinstall the ROM but I'll try taking it out of system/app first then installing it...

I must be using an ancient version if that is the current version. I'm using 1.0.0.3 and it works just fine.

I haven't looked at recovery for a few days now (love liberty) but the version of cwm you posted about is the only recovery we can use. You have the right tool.

Hmm and this is why Verizon is so strict on returns/exchanges now. People messing up their own phones and stating its a manufacterer defect. Not to sound rude or anything, but perhaps a little research was in order first? That or atleast wait for a sbf if you're going to be delete happy.

I would advice against it. I played with fastboot flash and although it said flash fail, the next time I turned on my phone, I would go straight into the fastboot menu with a Fastboot (Fail Flash). If anyone do encounter this error, there is a easy fix (at least for me), just hold vol up+vol down when turning on, and select Normal boot. Done.
If you've got a system.img with the right files and signatures, you'll be able to recovery your system in most cases.

Im having a similar issue i was replacing some stock apps with adb by pushing them and rebooted when i was done. Now im stuck in a bootloop and i cant connect the phone to adb with the usb no matter how hard i try.

For the stock apps gust facter rest aka flash data it reinstalls them only stock ones and superuser

Not sure if I have what you need but I have the Motorola Droid Razr Xt910 Rogers. I did an ADB bull of the system folder and zipped it. If you need that I'll upload to Megaupload or something.
If you need an .img file you'll have to give me instructions on how to do it. I've been having trouble trying to get the partitions pull such as modem, system, kernal, etc.

Hi every 1 I did not search and don't know if any1 has posted this but on my Droidx2 I found that u do not need the use the bootstrap app to get into cwm recovery if ur phone is off and u plugg it into AC power and when the Motorola screen comes on unplug wait for a few seconds and plug AC power back in and it will boot into cwm recovery.

u don't need to unplug when u see the moto logo
if recovery mode is set all u need to do is
power off and plug in as said above
it does this because our recovery hijacks charge only mode, its the only way we can boot into BSR at this time

Note: To clarify potential confusion... The BSR (Boot Strap Recovery) is NOT the same as CWM or CWMR (ClockWorkMod or ClockWorkModRecovery). PLEASE use the correct terms to avoid confusing people. Thank you! (Sorry, pet peeve. )

To me it (ours 2.5.1.8) is a hacked version never written to be installed by an apk. They all come from cwm. Once you are in cwr you can flash a different "cwr".zip.
Whether it successfully restores your bu ONLY Tenfar has hacked one that works for the (locked BL versions of the phones) Atrix, Photon and the Dx2 and they are all the same "cwr".zip!

It's CWM ported to our phones. Nothing more, nothing less. It's the same thing except we have to connect our phones to a wall charger. Otherwise, once you're in there, it's the same. Looks the same, the whole works. I have CWM on a couple devices here and there isn't any difference. Perhaps some of the options don't work for the X2 but, it's still the same thing. Can you tell I'm trying to tell you that it's the same?
Thanks for the responses. I'll stick with BSR then. It just seems people were so gung-ho about CWMR and I can't see why as there isn't a clear advantage to it over BSR.
I just had an idea. How about, instead of replacing charge mode, replace stock recovery and add an option in CWM to go into the stock recovery if needed. I can't do any of it but if a developer wants the challenge.

There is no point in using a recovery from another phone that has less options then bsr. U may be able to flash stuff like bsr but if it wont restore system there is no point in even posting it other then creating confusion when people cant nandroid back after something goes wrong. Save yourself a lot of issues people use bsr and deal with pluging it in. Its functional where the alternatives are not.

If my memory serves me correctly... which it rarely does lol... because of the locked bootloader the install fails. Stock recovery is in the bootloader and we cannot modify the bootloader so we can't install recovery. Or does install but the bootloader overrides it and brings us to stock. Something like that.. vodka is making it all foggy lol I'm pretty sure that's close though
Actually i think somewhere in the system... preinstall I think. But our locked bootloader is why it does not work and cannot work. That I remember for sure

Where RM puts the recovery IDNK but it's not preinstall.
BTW
Tenfar was one smart cookie getting cwr working w/ one apk on 3 different phones.

my post about a the the newer atrix recovery WAS in response to a MX2 Q about RECOVERY SAVING AS TARBALLS and they could not get a working recovery anyway.
Now some Mx2's can use ReRecovery manually as a work around.

I have flashed lots of foreign recoveries - no problem as I never install them. They run in the same environment created by our bsr.
But using Rom Manager to install any recovery, other than the still non-functioning dx2, will require an sbf.

Major newbie here, so i've gotten up to step 4. but I'm stuck at that.
Q: How do I install Eclipse?
1. sbf to 234
2. Root using MotorolaOneclick
3. Install Voodoo OTA rootkeeper and protect root but temp unroot
4. Apply 235 update in stock recovery
5. Restore root in Voodoo rootkeeper and delete backup (make sure root is restored before deleting!)
6. Install bootstrap
7. Reboot into bootstrap recovery
8. Wipe data
9. Flash eclipse
10. Profit from its beauty
How do I apply the 235 update in stock recovery, and how do I get that? And also, how do you do number 8 and 9, sorry if this is too much to ask. I'm new to this and don't want to go without directions, but sadly to a newbie, this aren't very helpful.
You can look into he droid x2 android development forum forum here or just dl 2.3.5 as if you were updating from your provider, by going to: settings/about phone/system updates.
8 and 9 are options in bootstrap recovery after you perform step 7

Yea take the update they way mombof told you, then open Voodoo OTA rootkeeper and restore root. It is IMPORTANT that after you restore the root you delete the SU Backup in the program or Eclipse install will fail.
Then download Boostrap Recovery from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318083
Once it is installed Enter BSR following the directions in the link above and you will see "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" Select it
Then still in BSR you will see "Install zip from sd card" Select it then select "Sd Card" and find The eclipse Zip you should have downloaded and placed on your external sd card. And that's it.
EDIT: By the way 2.3.5 is rootable, I don't know why anyone would do the long method anymore. Just saying. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818758

Alright so, I followed the directions up to where you get into the Bootstrap recovery, once I go into recovery mode from the app, it shows the "Dual Core Technology" screen and nothing else.
Did you press install recovery from within the app before pressing recovery mode? And are you plugged in to a wall charger? You must be plugged in. Just pull your battery and put it back to reboot your phone. If you did press install recovery first then once you pull your battery and put it back in just leave your phone off and plug it into a wall charger and it will boot in to recovery.

That's exactly what I did. If it matters, when I first pressed install recovery and Recovery mode, it never went to the battery screen in the first place, it went to the dual core screen.
And also, I'm on 2.3.4 if that matters anything.
Um ok a couple things. ***Do not install eclipse because it is for 2.3.5. You should have backed up root in Voodoo, Temp unrooted, gone to Settings-->About Phone-->System Update and taken the 2.3.5 update. Opened Voodoo OTA rootkeeper, restored root, deleted SU backup and then installed bootstrap recovery.
When you download the zipped BSR on your computer you should have unzipped it, placed it on your external sd card, Used file manager on your phone to find it, press it, package install. Then open "System Recovery" app and pressed install recovery. Plug your phone into the stock wall charger that came with your phone and then pressed "recovery mode" leaving it plugged in.
It doesnt matter that BSR is installed now, take the 2.3.5 update following the steps above and then once you are rooted again and SU backup is deleted press install recovery again, and press recovery mode. It wont boot to a battery screen, it will shut off and restart into the recovery menu, but you will see the red dualcore screen first for a few seconds. Leave it plugged in and wait a minute.

First of all, thanks a ton for helping me.
So I backed up my root, and temp un-rooted my phone and went into my system update but it was grayed out. I tried the *#*#checkin#*#*, where you call that and it should force the update to 2.3.5, but it still didn't put me into 2.3.5. I factory restored my phone, SBF'd to 2.3.5 as directed by the root guide you gave to me a couple posts back, rooted my phone, downloaded BSR onto my phone, gave it superuser permission. I then plugged my phone into the wall outlet, installed recovery, and then went into recovery mode and it's showed me the dual core screen for about 5 minutes or so, still being plugged into the wall outlet.
I then pulled the battery from the back, and unplugged the phone. I put the battery back in, and plugged the phone back in and it went straight to the dual core screen.
Has this ever happened to people before me? Or am I just doing something terribly wrong and I don't even know it.
Something is not right. However if you rooted your phone using Magic root method bsr should have already been installed on your phone. You're not using the CM7 patched BSR for any reason are you? Do me a favor and try something. In system recovery app click charge mode, turn off your phone and plug it in, tell me if you see the battery icon again.
Are you 100% sure you are rooted and busybox is installed before trying to install BSR? Download rootchecker or android terminal emulator to make sure root worked.
Try uninstalling the bootstrap you added then reinstalling it. Or do a data wipe in stock recovery and reinstall it after.
when using magic md5 root, be careful not to click continue, until phone has completed reboot
or you will skip steps
If you're still having trouble, I strongly recommend Pete"s Motorola Root Tools. It has a one click root option as well as an un-root option, and its very easy to use. I've used it at least 6 times after sbf-ing without problem.

Whoops, my bad. Assumed he was going back to 2.3.4.
unnecessary, as 2.3.5 is rootable now
and if you are flashing eclipse, you need to be on 2.3.5

Read your great advice to the previous posts. I am having trouble installing the Eclipse ROM as well. Recently replaced a Droid X with a Droid X2 running stock GB 2.3.5. Rooted phone and tried to install Eclipse, but the installation failed twice with error of: "e:signature verification failed".
I have been searching forums for the past two days trying to find the problem, but have not had any luck.
I have ROM Manager and ROM Toolbox installed, if that info helps.

Thanks for the reply.
I rooted using a self extracting batch file off of the Droid X forum, and I don't think OTA Rootkeeper was any part of that, (Don't see it in my app folder)
Not sure if there is a super user backup, could not find it anywhere..
Any ideas would be appreciated!

Dude, you are my hero! Sometimes the the easiest solutions are best. Downloaded a new copy of the eclipse zip file, (noticed that the file size was different from the old one. Hmmm!), Performed another nandroid and titanium back up, reinstalled eclipse...tada! No error!
