After rooting the X2 and freezing much of the bloatware, the com.motorolla.contacts task is taking up 25% of my battery life on average. Anyone else experiencing this problem?
Edit: i figured out that backup assistant is destroying my phone.

how did you disable the backup assistant? I've noticed its sucking the battery life out of my phone also, but i dont see an option to turn it off.
well actually I figured out what the real problem was. what happens is that when you join two contacts together, one being one you made and the other being one from facebook, com.motorolla.contacts loves to constantly sync the profile and contact pictures, burning the battery. The backup assistant itself should not use as much energy, but if it is giving you problems you could always freeze it with titanium
I've got the same issue, and I've joined contacts so that must be it. Unjoining them isn't something I want to do though. How can we stop them from syncing, can we freeze something with Titanium Backup?

I have no idea. I only had like 3 contacts that were doubled so I didn't care enough to change them. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the social networking app. Be careful though because once you find a way to stop the syncing, all of the rest of your contacts with probably stop syncing as well.

So I downloaded the free version of system panel just to get an idea of whats running on my phone, since the default task manager isn't too accurate.
after a restart i have a bunch of random things. for example, calendar storage (dont use the calendar at all), maps (i havent opened it yet), media hub (never use this), Messaging (i use handscent).
i remember how i used to have an app killer to end these things but from what i've learned most people believe app killers waste more battery than they save? and that at this point android is good on ending processes on it's own?
how come these random things are running?
basically i wanna save battery life. i use SuperPower but it's kinda annoying tbh. data disable when screen off = gotta keep my screen on for market to update apps, fb chat to keep running/stay online, etc.
any suggestions?

Don't use Super Power, I've come to realize that was a much larger hassle than the benefits it made. If you have Titanium Backup Pro freeze all apps you never use, like Media Hub and other Samsung apps. And things like Calander Storage don't worry about, I'm sure it's nothing that's draining your battery.
And also, task killers DO drain more battery than they save, assuming you're on a froyo 2.2 based rom. And if you want turn off Auto Sync in settings and this will save some battery. Otherwise, your battery life should be pretty solid.

thanks man, i got rid of superpower and will see how much it truely effected my battery life.
as for titanium backup, i don't have pro but i guess i will buy it if there aren't any free alternatives to freeze apps?

How do I completely freeze this service using T backup pro?
I freezed Gtalk 1.0.3 the app, but using Betterbatterystats reveal that gtalk_async_conn still resulting in partial wakelock timing
I have also noticed this.
Anyway we can stop it?
Still no solution? GTALK_ASYNC_CONN is my main Partial Wakelock in the Betterbatterystats (KH3 firmware) and heavy battery drainer with about 60 min of activity during 8 hours...
same problem with me...and no one on Google does not have a solution for this.
installed 'Better Battery Stats' to see what was keeping the phone up and it's "gtalk_async_conn". The thing is that I don't even use Google Talk. I tried to disable auto-login and freeze it with Titanium Backup without any luck. The only thing that worked was to disable 'Background data' but other apps like Market needs that option on.
Literally everyone appears to have this problem, i actually froze Talk in Titanium and have had no problems but is this Gtalk_async_conn related to this or what?
This problem persist more with google Maps 5.8, 5.9 version. I uninstalled the google maps and noticed that problem was solved, issue was not present anymore in wakelock of batterbatterystats. However it's not permanent solution.

That post might explain what it is, but it's not very helpful at solving the issue.
I turned off notifications in Market (some versions don't have this setting; try Market 3.1.3). If it still doesn't help then I am going to try turning off Gmail sync.
Turn off all syncing (gmail, calander, etc), turn off background data and you may have it disappear, also don't use anything that uses google c2d push notifications.

- Turned off Google accounting syncing for everything except Gmail (background data / auto-sync still enabled)
Partial wakelocks for GTALK_ASYNC_CONN are now very low. Just a couple of seconds over 15+ hours of low use.
However I think I still have some battery drain (based on Battery Monitor Widget) so I am looking at other possibilities.

Totally valid point. But I have also tried running it with Battery Monitor Widget turned off and I still see the same drain (by looking at the battery history graph).
Also while experimenting, I had a couple of hours where Battery Monitor Widget continuously reported -1mA battery discharge (while Battery Monitor Widget was running of course). The battery history graph was basically flat. So that tells me that I can still run Battery Monitor Widget and get minimal battery usage -- if everything else is working right.
In the Better Battery Stats thread, the developer says his target battery discharge is -2mA to -10mA (measured by Battery Monitor Widget). I know it's possible because I've gotten it before, but lately I'm somewhere around -70mA so that's what I've been working on.
Getting great battery life now with the Gtalk_async_conn issue seemingly gone. I still have Maps removed -- luckily I do not need it much these days. I also notice that Market likes to stay running in the background, where it uses some CPU time even with notifications disabled. Also, turning on Google Calendar auto-sync caused significant battery drain.
Quick summary:
- Uninstall/freeze Maps
- Kill Market if it's running in the background
- Turn off Google account syncing for everything except Gmail
- Turn off "Back up my data" under Privacy settings

It's good to know that these mods work, but they are pretty extreme for me, and I would assume many others. I actively use the functionality of Maps and other Google account syncing. I hope that someone can work out a way to minimize the usage without cutting off the functionality completely.
For what it's worth, I see a dramatically higher usage of the GTALK process when I am at work where some of the syncs are blocked on the office wifi. Out of the office on 3G or at home, the amount of time GTALK is active is significantly reduced.

I agree it's annoying. But the battery life improvement is dramatic, even more so than I mentioned in my earlier post. I used to get <20 hours per charge. Now I get about 3 days. Hopefully these are just bugs in the apps that Google will fix in future versions.
Not sure what is causing it. I have turned off auto-sync, logged out of gtalk, and even turned off "Back up my data" and "Automatic restore" from Settings>Privacy.
I still notice 1-2 minutes of partial wakelocks.
Try killing Market if it is running.
Ok, so i froze few apps through TB to save on battery. (like Buddies now,Wifi sharing, Reading hub, Samsung apps etc.). And then I installed OS monitor from the market to monitor the processes running. To my surprise, I see Buddies now and Samsung apps running at least once every 10-15 seconds. I have uninstalled Buddies now through TB as well. But the process still seems to be running.
Can anybody verify this. ? No wonder I am getting crappy battery life. I am on rooted stock rom.
Is it that i have not frozen some associated apps which is leading to this ?

You should only freeze those which causes wake from deep sleep. You need to see what apps/processes are running on background with the help of application Better Battery Stats and see under Partial Wakelocks. I, for myself have frozen nothing because I don't have anything which causes any major wakes.
Besides, if you are on KF3 then there shouldn't be any Wifi sharing problem. Also Samsung app also doesn't involve in wake situations.

I have pretty much frozen all Samsung bloatware that is ok to freeze and battery life is vastly superior now compared to what it was beforehand, i also froze Maps as i don't use it much and some other apps i don't use much if i need to use them it takes a few seconds to defrost them and there you go.
I am on KF3 and the only battery eating thing has been:
"Software Update Service (com.wssyncmldm)"
So I froze it and presto twice the battery life of what I had before.
I sometimes use MAPS with Lattitude. But when I am done I explicitly log out of lattitude, or out goes the power.... as it will keep running in the background.
BTW I use the FREE Anttek App manager to freeze stuf, works great!

I've noticed that Google maps is always taking up a big portion of the battery in the battery menu. If I freeze it with titanium would that make a significant difference? I use it seldom enough to go thru the trouble of unfreezing it when needed if it's worth it..
I have the same problem. The only thing about freezing it is that several apps use it. It couldn't hurt to try though. I believe this is a pretty wide spread problem lately.

I recommend you download a program called autostarts. it's a great little program that lets you stop apps from booting themselves up. you'd be surprised how often the apps on our devices want to boot themselves for no reason- at startup, when you plug the phone in, when you switch to wifi, etc. autostarts doesn't truly freeze the apps, so you can still open them and use them when you WANT to, it just stops them from running in the background for no reason. saves a lot of RAM and batterylife.

Have you tried modification of the location reporting settings?
In Maps-> Settings-> Location are some settings, disabling them stops the reporting of your device and saves a lot of battery.

I've recently installed CM10 and for the most part have been happy with the battery performance, however, if I don't remember to switch to airplane mode overnight, the battery drops by almost half by the time I get into work again.
I've noticed that Android OS, System Standby and Maps are all using a lot of battery, which is weird because I haven't used maps, nor have I (to the best of my knowledge) used any apps that would require my location (other than the camera, to take two photos)

Greenify also backs this up, with maps waking up my device a ridiculous number of times, and Facebook Messenger (which I'm now tempted to uninstall) along with BBC Weather which I have no idea why it's running so frequently that I'm also tempted to uninstall.

with es task manager you can enable and disable start up apps or running apps. this helped me from time to time. good luck
