[Finished!] Trying to piece together a car mount solution - Eee Pad Transformer Accessories

I've been doing a lot of research trying to come up with a good solution to mount my Transformer in the map compartment of my car (03 Mazda 6) which is actually pretty large. The transformer will almost fit in it horizontally but I want something that will allow me to adjust and swivel it to be able to easily change my viewing angle so I was looking at some goose neck/swivel mount solutions but I wasn't sure if they would support the tablets ~1.5lbs weight. The goose neck solution I was looking at is made by ProClip (http://www.proclipusa.com/brodit-de...ount-with-amps-hole-pattern-215181-13978.aspx) and I was thinking of just putting a PadTab (http://www.thepadtab.com) on the end of it since I can't find a holder for it yet. Does anyone know if the Motorola Xoom holder might work for it since the dimensions are nearly the same? Does anyone else have their Transformer mounted in their car in a similar way? If so, what solution are you using (besides a vent mount). Also if you have any suggestions on what may work I am open to hear them.

Actually after looking more online I'm thinking that this flex mount (http://www.panavise.com/index.html?pageID=1&page=full&--eqskudatarq=149) looks a lot sturdier than the one ProClip sells and I think it may be able to withstand vibrations a lot better and is cheaper which is also a plus lol.

There's someone on this forum that did proclip + pad tab.
I talked to the product manager at ProClip and they do not have any plans to develop a TF holder. The holders are very specific to the device so a Xoom may not work.
The pad tab seems like the only option but I don't want to stick that plastic square thing on the back of my TF...
Here is the link to that post...he has pictures and even a video:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079098

Got mine mounted in my car today. Came up with a better/permanent solution since I don't trust the padtab to hold my device. Will post some pics tomorrow but here is what I used in case any of you were wondering..
RAM Mount Tab-Tite Holder (Model # RAM-HOL-TAB3U) -- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004V9JA20
Panavise 6-Inch Stay-Put Flex Mount (Model # 782-06) -- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I7OQB4 (although it's really really hard to flex .. i guess that's what the stay-put means in the product name .. and it doesn't move when you drive at all so if you want that flexibility i would suggest a uniflex mount that panavise makes.)
I have an 03 Mazda 6S which has a map compartment that opens up above my radio which I then mounted the Panavise base to by drilling 3 holes in it for the mount and I put a metal sheet behind it (since the map compartment is plastic) for extra support so I can flex the mount if I need to. Other than that this has worked excellent.

Pics? Sounds like an awesome idea.

Just finished my ram mount set up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118181

@weenrock - What swivel did you use for yours? Mines rather tight. Lol.
Anyways here's the pics as promised. I'll make a video tomorrow when I have more time.

Wow, nice work!

That's kind of extreme.
You could've just used a suction mount:
http://www.amazon.com/RAM-B-166-TAB3U-Suction-Tab-Tite-Cradle-Motorola/dp/B004V4N3NW/ref=pd_cp_e_1
I bought one of those for myself.

I'd really like to know how well that suction mount works before trusting a tablet being mounted to it. Please report back after you've got some mileage with this mount in use.

Think there is much difference between the tab holder you used vs this one from RAM? http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogRes...rtid/082065077045050051052045054/Default.aspx

We understand the concern...that being said the adhesive we use is stronger than most mounts that are either drilled into a wall or suction cup holders. The adhesive is used in industrial applications in place of metal rivots such as holding metal street signs and bonding sheets of metal for trailers. The PadTab would not be worth our time if it didn't do what we say it does. Securing the tablet was our most important goal in addition to allowing it to be mounted.

Well - I just used the one recommended from RAM mounts - Part ID: RAM-B-101U-C
UNPKD. RAM MNT. W/2 2 1/2" BASES & C ARM
It a straight swivel with two ball joints that are coated in rubber to have a very solid grip but easily movable.

This looks like it is a permanent mount...not a suction cup mount. Am I wrong?

Car Mount?

Was wondering if there was a car mount for this bad boy? I know ram makes a good car mount for the ipad, but im not sure if their cradle is adjustable because even though this is 10" i dont think it has the same shape haha..
i been looking at this one Car Mount it's adjustable so it might just work.
I was looking at that one eluminx. It didn't seem to get a good rating. Another one I came across was from the UK amazon site. I haven't looked for it on US site yet. Here's a link... http://www.amazon.co.uk/ULTIMATEADDONS-Mount-Holder-Medion-Netbook/dp/B003CI7Y74

Check mountguys.com, they have one for an android tablet, looks to be adjustable
I plan on using a sheet of Kydex to form around my gtab and canibalizing an old suction mount to mount it on. Then I can get those little adhesive suction discs and affix it once I find the best location.

honestly i think that the gtab in the car would be pretty damn cool to use, however i think it just MIGHT be an obstruction of view if you guys were to get the windshield mounts for the tab, believe you will def get a few tickets for that from the local cops looking to meet 'quotas'. maybe if there was something where you can dock it say where the lighter is or in the middle console somehow but on the windshield prob isnt the best place for it, just my 2 cents

I agree, big time! I plan on mounting mine lower in my work van. I also plan on "fabricating" some sort of recessed dock type enclosure in my truck. I had plans for a carputer but I think a gtab dock would be way more convenient....and way sweeter!
Hoping to tap the knowledge of the guys at this forum. They build some awesome setups here. I know this isn't for the average person, but I am already half way there in my vehicle.

I bought one of these iPad suction cup mounts from some random site on BensBargains.net and use it with a beanbag friction dash mount... on my desk. The setup is just too large and cumbersome to be placed on the dashboard. Not to mention the ball head mechanism never seems to get tight enough to hold the tablet steady when I touch anything on either the extreme left or right of the tab.

[Q] Car Vent Mount: What do You Think?

I saw this on the mountguys.com website:
http://www.mountguys.com/product_p/mfx-47-ipadtab.htm
What do you think? Is there enough holding power to safely craddle the Gtab? My only free space is really infront of the air vents. Any other issues or concerns?
Nice !
Would much rather that then the windshield mount
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I predict that it won't be long before you have a vent ripped out of your car and a tablet on the floor. These things are pretty heavy. Cell phone from a vent, ok.. Tablet? Not me...
I would love to have a mount in my truck for the gtablet. The cops might get a little curious if you did a windshield mount .
Has anybody bought a car mount yet? I'm looking for one that fits the tab even if I have to modify the base.
I bought one from Amazon but it only came with the window mount part. I used the part that holds the tab and secured it to my visor with some Velcro straps. Works well and I can flip it down to use or flip it up to drive.

I purchased this and in the description it states you can mount it to the ac vent. I sent an email to the sender because I did not see how this could attach to a vent and they refunded the money. The grip part holds the Gtab great. I Bought a yoga mat holder from walmart for 5$ to hold it to the visor.

Similar yoga strap. I cut the long strap and used the two loops to hold the mount.

I don't think that would work well. These tablets are too heavy to be held up safely with an air vent. The best solution would be a cup holder mount.

vent mount no way... even the cup holder mount is borderline. i did see a mount that bolts to the floor where the seat does, now that would work! it had a arm that raised it up to the level desired.. thats the route im going.

I like this too, but I have a power passenger seat in my coupe and when you forward the back rest to enter the rear seat, the power see automatically slides forward. I am afraid it will push and bend the arm up against the dash as it does not look like it is very long.

I've been looking for the same thing, swivel capabilities is a must. Anyone find a good one?
Get a decent quality universal car mount (with the four prongs) and then just buy a cheap fixation for your Lumia. That way you can keep the mount when you eventually change phones... That's what I've been doing for the last few years...
I've got a telescopic Herbert Richter car mount which looks like it's the same as this one (http://www.ebay.com/itm/iGrip-Herbe...472900?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item48454f5744) and I've been very pleased with it. Unlike some of the cheaper ones I've had it has never lost suction and come unstuck. Most eBay sellers who have cheap Lumia 920 car mounts will sell the phone-specific part of their mounts separately for a couple of euros...
Well .. i dont like the universal ones to be honest because the ones i used never where as usfull as expected. will have a loook at the richter one.
Which car charger can you recommend. I am reading a few amazon.co.uk reviews and they are not to pleased with the ones offered
The one I use (and the one that looks like mine that I posted a link for) isn't one of those universal ones that can be adjusted to hold any size of phone... I don't like those ones either... The ones Im talking about just use a four prong system where you can attach phone specific "faceplates" like you can see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=683631 so it looks like it's made for the phone you use it with... Sorry, it's not easy to explain but you should be able to get an idea of what I'm talking about.
does your one come with a car charger already?
got different from belkin etc .. just looking for the power part of a car mount now.
will see if i find a universal holder later
hrmm, not sure if we are allowed to post links on here...
anyways, i bought this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00AEO3U7W/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
took a gamble as there was no reviews, current review is from myself.
Its pretty solid, I tend to always buy ones for the phone as I'm not a big fan of the all in one mounts, and the nokia one i got for my partners 710 is terrible, won't even hold my phone just slips out constantly. I've got a car charger from maplin to go with it that does do a 1000ma charge as my old charger didn't charge the phone enough to keep up with navigon.
Its as solid as some premium brand mounts i've bought in the past, as good as you can get with one suction cup. (imo) how long it lasts is another thing, but for the price I thought it was pretty neat, a friend borrowed it and immediatly ordered one too.
Its very sturdy and the easist phone mount i've used to slip in and out, only thing that did initially put me off is the fit isn't 100% secure, theres very slight movement, i don't think its even 1mm, thought it would rattle but seems fine in the car.
well i just ordered this for my charging:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002C3AFHG/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
hope you didnt have this one
and i will have a closer look at the amazon offer, thanks
stead, look at the second photo of the one you bought, see the four prongs? That means the front panel comes off so yours is one of the ones that I was talking about that can be used with any type of phone (as long as you get the right front panel holder piece)...

I've very rarely seen them advertised on their own but if you ask, most eBay sellers who sell the dirt cheap car holders will sell you the phone specific attachment on it's own in my experience and usually for only a couple of euros including postage. Postage must be cheaper in Hong Kong than it is in France...
Arkon Slim-Grip Floor Mount SM525-S
FWIW I have been using this model for about 4 years- first with my Tilt2 and now with the Lumia 920 (both without a case and with an Otterbox Defender case as the holder can expand). I had an older version for the Tilt2 which didn't allow for 180deg movement (you couldn't move the phone to landscape position while inside the holder) so when I got the 920 I was able to purchase just the Slim-Grip portion and keep the flexible pedestal part that I already had.
The 4 legs on the Slim-Grip are not permanent- they come in a little bag and you slide them into the body of the phone holder. The move left and right to allow for access to ports on the phone that may not be centered on the phone itself. It also comes with extra legs that are a different shape in case you need a different fitment for your phone (think they are shorter?). The bottom of the Slim-Grip is the part that moves- you push it down with the bottom of your phone and it expands enough to let you then push the top of the phone into the holder so the top legs support it. It isn't obvious from the pictures on Arkon's site at first but you will see a line running across the holder when you look at the pictures and that is where the movement occurs.
I am able to put my phone in the holder with one hand and, because the pedestal part is mounted to one of the passenger seat floor bolts, it's very stable. It's hard to move the pedestal to bend it to different shapes, which is a good thing, because it won't flop all over the place when driving. I can use the 920 without a case in it and with an Otterbox Defender, either way is fine. It allows easy access to the audio and power ports. My friends stick their phones in it too and it holds them just as well (iPhones, Galaxy S3's, Blackberry's etc......).The mount does not impede passenger comfort, however they may not be able to just flop their left leg against the center console because the mount would then be rubbing against the plastic and may leave marks, at least in my Subaru Legacy.
I have used this mount without any problems for close to 5 years now and everyone is jealous of it because it is so secure and convenient. I have no problems recommending it 100%. Good luck.

Oh OK I understand what you're saying now; I thought you were referring to an issue like the screws scratching the phone or something like that.
I didn't have to screw anything into my dash. I had a mount that clips onto the dash and a holder which is screwed into said mount. Very easy.

Show off your minimalist cardocks!

For any of you guys that hate regular big car mounts and maybe have gotten creative or found a minimalist product to mount your note 3 in your car, please share! Im talking magnets, clips, adhesive ... anything that doesnt require a huge arm sticking out of your dash.
Im currently on the hunt and the best minimalist solution i can find currently is the tetrax fixway/xway magnets solution.
If anyone has something cooler, please let me know.

I can't post links still for some reason (mods?) so do a search for the InfiniApps Slyde on Amazon. Really happy with mine. Just got a second for the wife's GS4 in her car.
YMMV depending on the case you use, the soft-touch stuff doesn't "grip" to the rubber pad quite as well, so keep that in mind.
I went with the Caseology One-Touch. Very stable and sturdy.

Clean. Do you think the arms that hold the phone have enough depth to hold the N3 with a qi charger plate behind it? Maybe another 1/2" or slightly less?
Hmmm... I think so. There's quite a little bit of room but then again I have the Tudia Melody case on my Note. I'm not using that car until tonight, I'll get back to you.

I bought this mount from ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Car-Air-Ven...1564?pt=US_Mounts_Holders&hash=item3f2a732fac
and then I threw away everything but the actual phone holder. I used heavy velcro to attach it to my dash. As you can see in the pictures, I have a hard wired power cord running to it poking out of the dash.
It doesn't budge. I can't picture anything smaller that does not include a part which must go on the phone (like a magnet).

I really would prefer something like this, but need to find the base and arms that will hold the qi behind.
Minimal mounts
My minimalist Note 3 mounts in my two cars, both using a ProClip car specific dash mount, and a pair of ex-hard drive neo-magnets each.
The magnets are held on with 3M acrylic double sided tape, and I put some heat shrink over the magnets on the mount in the Subaru (but I think I'll cut the shrink tape off, I think I prefer the look of the nickel plated magnets in the open as in the Porsche).
On both cars, I have added a hard-wired 5v micro USB charge line installed at the mount, and I've set the 'screen always on when charging'
under the Developer Options menu.
I glued a thin, 1.5" diameter fender washer on the outside of the hard case, under the rubber cover of the Otterbox Defender.
I like this set up because no permanent modifications were made to the cars, and no modifications were made to the phone itself, just the washer glued to the outside of the Defender hard case.
Cheers'
Dan

That ebay one looks good. Do you mind taking a picture along wiht ur Note 3 attached it to your vent, i guess you have directly attached it to your dashboard?
The problem with cd related mounts are 1. they take away the look of your dashboard specially if the interiors of your car is an eye candy *mine is :victory: * 2. On another car forum i read that car mount that attaches to your cd slot can damage the internals if you ever slam your breaks to hard and your car jolts to a stop.
I can sacrifice a vent but cannot place a mount on the top of my dashboard as it looks hideous. Plus i wouldnt want to attach a charging cable to the car mount, i usually keep my phone charged at max most of the times.. thanks to QI technology, plus if et all i need to charge my phone in a car during long drives i will keep a standby cable handy that is removable and attached directly to the phone (like most other mounts do)

Dan, can you post links to both the items the mount and the magnet?
I do like the Kenu Airframe Portable Car Vent Mount but they make it for the iphones and most android phones do work wiht it, but not the Note 3.

The mounts can be found at ProClipUSA.com, the magnets were from old desktop HDD's I had - each drive contains 2 neodymium magnets, and are pretty easy to remove.

I did attach it directly to my dashboard using heavy duty velcro tape. Unfortunately, I threw away the vent mount which came with the phone holder. So I can't take a picture. I did use it for a few days just to see what it was like. It worked well and was reasonably stable. But, I prefer the reduced clutter of just attaching the phone holder to the dash.

I use a similar setup, but with an iMagnet rig screwed to the proclip mounting plate. Works very well, very clean, and gives you some adjustability on angle.

What kind of car, and what interior mods have you done? Post a pic of your car's interior.

I need some info . . . I've decided, now that I'm using wireless charging, that I want to modify my 2 minimalist car mounts to include QI transmitters . . . I've been to every mobile/electronics/cell phone shop and/or kiosk in my area, and QI stuff around here is non-existent.
I'm looking for the smallest diameter (I prefer to try using a round unit first, oval if needed), as well as thinnest QI transmitter available - that also uses mico-USB for power (I'm already wired up with stable micro-USB 5v sources in both cars). I've done countless searches on Ebay and Amazon, and it appears the thinnest I'll find is around 9-10mm, by roughly 65mm (.35" x 2.5").
I'm kind of hoping I can get info from people who have already bought some of these, before I start buying every 'mini/micro' charger on Ebay and Amazon for comparison as to actual size/quality/other potential issues.
Thanks!

Car phone holder - one that works quite well

I've struggled to find a phone holder that works well with the size of my note 3 in a Trident Kraken AMS case.
This one however is inexpensive and works well http://www.wilko.com/car-accessories/rockland-mp3sat-nav-holder/invt/0345172?VBMST=car phone holder
I thought I'd post it up in case it helps anyone.

Looks okay but I prefer the imagnet...
I love ProClip's holders. You select the custom mount for your car, and then the custom mount for you phone. I've owned several brands of custom clips throughout the years, and I've never been happier.

After having tried several car mounts, I have come to a point where I do not want any snake-type car mount - the ones with extensible, adjustable arm ... with time, and car vibrations, they do not really stick in place, and dangle around a little bit.
Lately I happened to pick a glass screen cover from xtreme guard where they offered promotional Flozu car mount + a 90% discount coupon ... at the end, it was really a deal for the both of them..
I have been using the flozu mount since around 1 month now, very solid, top notch. secure suction locking mechanism, seems to hold much stronger to the windshield than my previous ones. The absense of the extensible arm made it VERY stable in terms of vibration and permanent "dangle" . It holds my note 3 firmly (not strongly) between its pliers, and manipulating the plier to open it is very easy - not complicated spring-loaded buttons to press - which get worse with time - which you see on other models. Seriously recommend.
Here is the link to the Flozu mount:
http://www.xtremeguard.com/product-p/car-mount-flozu.htm
mine came today (Flozu mount), fairly quick standard shipping delivery. I expect it'll do a very good job. At first I thought it was rather pricey ($49.99 USD) but then the 75% off discount code appeared -- can't find anything decent in the stores for $12.75! easy to mount to the windshield, nice firm grip of my unprotected S3 (countdown to upgrade: 3days). I'll update after having used it awhile.

I use mountek products. one of the most stable products to use by locking it in your cd slot or between the dash crevices. Great as some states may not allow suction cup mount on glass.

Airframe+
I use the Kenu Airframe+. Mounts in the vent and holds really well. Also works as a kick stand since it's small and you can carry it around with you with you're not in the car.
Best mounting system I've ever owned, but it's not cheap.

I use this holder for my Note 3. Its been good for a year now and cheap.
Can twist it for landscape or portrait and can hold any phone as most of us use cases on our phones it will fit any phone... One problem is your car will need to have strong vents and not too deep directors inside as the back will need to grip onto those.
EBay number item number 311275702025 check can't post link as I'm a new member.
Masik v6.0 lollipop Note 3 N9005
I just bought my second one of these. Super sturdy and the suction cup has a gooey material on it that literally will stick to just about anything!
second this!

I've had this mount for around 2 years and I love it! 2 of my friends got it after they saw mine.
I hardly ever use my CD changer but it still functions normally if you do.
In my car it puts the phone in the perfect place. Here's a few pictures of it in my car so you know how it looks.
Hello
In the past I used only phone specific holders like proclip. Works fine but expensive. Now the kids want to use the car too so I changed to an universal holder.
Now I use http://www.rammount.com/part/RAM-HOL-UN7BU
Fits the s4 mini and my Note 3 too.
Besides the holder you'l need:
Ball base http://www.rammount.com/part/RAM-B-202U
Arm: http://www.rammount.com/part/RAM-B-201U-A (various lengths available).
Not cheap but you by it once.

I got a simple silicon mat on ebay - sticks like glue to the dash and you can just slap the phone on it (gently) and it sticks even on bumpy roads. And if it gets dusty you can just wash it in water - works brilliantly and cost me about $5
Looks a little like these but the 'bumps' aren't so noticeable on mine.
ProClip
I've used ProClip mounts in two different trucks with three different phones. I wouldn't use anything else. You buy the mount in two pieces - one piece for the vehicle, that's specific to the vehicle, and where in the vehicle you want to mount the phone. It has tabs that insert into the existing seams of your car's interior. No drilling, no bolts to unscrew, a very clean installation. The other piece you buy for the phone (or tablet, or GPS unit). They have many phone mounts each designed to fit a specific phone - as long as you don't have a case on it. They also have phone mounts that are more universal in nature for those that use a case. Any of the phone mounts will attach to any of the vehicle mounts.
It's expensive - each piece has cost me between $35 and $40, so around $75 when you first buy the system. But if you get a new phone, you only have to replace the phone mount. If you get a new car, you only have to replace the vehicle mount.
It's a premium mount. It holds your phone firmly in place, and it's a clean , professional looking installation. I think it's worth the cost.
For my Note 3, I've been using the Exogear ExoMount Touch -http://www.exogear.com/products-exomount-touch-one-touch-car-mount-holder.html . The reusable adhesive pad works surprisingly well and it is a cinch putting in and taking out my Note 3, even in my Urban Armor Gear case. Simply put the phone into the mount and the arms snap close around the device, and to remove I just press the release buttons. Easy in, easy out.
The one issue I had was one one occasion the tightening nut cracking, but I think that was as a result of me carelessly over-tightening on one occasion. The company quickly sent me a free replacement, however.

Not sure where you are, but mine's been through some pretty hot days with the car parked in the sun and no problems. Silicon shouldn't melt - it melts around 1400ÂșC - if your car is getting that hot you'd have to be approaching the Sun I think. Maybe yours was plastic?
Just check my history on dx.com, and yes, it seems you were right, it was PVC, must say I didn't check that as it said made for car dashboard.
Anyway, just be careful what you buy.

I second the RAM mounts. I use the cupholder version, then the ball arm, and the X clip. I can even swap out the attachment with my medium/large RAM holder that fits a nexus 7, or my large holder that fits an ipad air. Ram mounts aren't cheap, but they're versatile and built to last. I'll never need to buy another mount system again, unless I find a really oddball device in the future and need a new attachment for the Ram.
I finally found the perfect mount for my taste. Universal + with charge function.
http://www.1a-pc-shop.de/shop/hr-30417-universal-smartphone-charging-dock.html
You cand adjust the x and the z axis of the power connector holder at the bottom. There are 5 adapters included for different cables. Works very well with my usb 3.0 car charger. Silicon case no problem.
Now I just slide in the Note 3 and it charges. And this should work for many devices to come.
