Change default messaging application - Legend Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How can I change this away from the 'messaging' application. I am aware of the normal method for changing defaults, i.e. settings, clear defaults, but the messaging application says that there are no defaults currently set...
Any help would be appreciated,

Think you should just turn off Auto-retrieve and Notifications from the Messaging app. And obviously don't start the Messaging app to check your messages, but your new app.

Yes, I do this normally and it works well. However, an application which I use which tells me the number of unread texts etc, is coded to open the default messaging application when I click on its widget (or so I'm told my the developer) and this opens the HTC Messaging application not GoSms. From this I must assume that the messaging app is the default... hence my post.
Thanks for your suggestion anyway,
Phane.

Try these commands if you have root...
adb remount
adb shell
# cd /system/app
# cp Mms.apk /sdcard/Mms.apk.bak
# rm Mms.apk
# exit
adb reboot
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT try it if you dont back up

Thanks for your reply.
Don't have root *YET*
I'll try when I can.
Thanks again,
Phane.

[Q] Help!! Messaging problem

I have a rooted SGS2 running Siyah 2.3 and Touch X-Power, with LauncherPro. I have the stock messaging app. When I receive texts from certain people in my contacts list, I get a notification but when I open the text to read it, I'm taken straight to the message create screen and can't read the text. No matter which way I try to enter the messaging app, I can't open the text or any previous ones that I've received from them.
This also happens if I have Handscent running, the message is accepted by the stock app but not Handscent... It's driving me mad.
Any ideas? Can I remove the stock app so that it isn't there at all and use something else like Handscent as the default?
If the app doesn't force close then it sounds like its a problem with either what you are doing or something other than the app.
But yea, you can remove the app and just use handcent if you really want to. Get Root Explorer from the market if you haven't already (its like £2 or something). Then navigate to system > apps > you will see a whole bunch of apks. Find MMS.apk and delete it.
Hope that helps.
Did you mess around with the settings?

[Q] Can text messaging be disabled on Optimus One

My carrier charges 50 cents per inbound/outbound text message when roaming outside of North America. I would like to have my phone turned on to receive emergency calls - but don't want to rack up a huge bill receiving non-urgent text messages.
Is there a setting or app that allows one to turn off inbound text messages on the LG Optimus One? (I'm using the Cyanogen Mod 7.1.0.)
Thanks in advance for your help.

you cant.. your carrier can help you out.. better complain to them if they can do that for you.
or if you just don't want to notice any SMS then turn off sms notifications!!
Unfortunately, my carrier cannot turn off text messaging. That's why I asked here...
Thanks for your help anyways.

Remove libwms.so and you won't be able to receive or send SMS.
Thanks for the response. A couple of questions:
1) How do I locate and remove the file.
2) When I want to restore my text messaging service, how do I do so?
Thanks in advance for your response. I'm hoping that you've provided the solution I need!
Dave
Use Root Explorer and navigate to /system/lib
Click Mount R/W
Rename libwms.so to libwms.so.bak
Reboot
Or use adb:
>adb connect
>adb remount
>adb shell mv /system/lib/libwms.so /system/lib/libwms.so.bak
>adb reboot
I have never tried this myself so I can't guarantee that this works so prepare to flash CM7 again.
Remove the messaging app using titanium backup (or any other similar app) and use third party app like go sms, handcent or pansi. You can install and remove third party apps whenever you want. No need to reflash the ROM. Ofcourse you will not have stock messaging app. I always remove stock messaging app and use third party app
One more way is to use sms blocking app from market. I think you will still be charged for incoming sms and only that you wont receive notifications

Default messaging app not working properly, how to make third-party default?

So, the messaging app hasn't been working since I got my phone. Its a GSM razr maxx. When I create a new sms, and go to enter the contact name in, nothing happens-- I don't see any contacts come up. Even if I enter a phone number or name from my phone book, it says my entry was invalid.
Is there anyway to make another 3rd party app my default messaging app and have it appear on my lock screen?

I figured out why my contacts weren't showing up when entering contacts in a new message. Some stupid glitch in my "people" app. Under "contacts to display", nothing was checked under custom. Even though a custom view was NOT selected (all contacts was), this made it so nothing would come up in my messaging app (although my contacts displayed in chomp & my dialer just fine).
Although your advice will still come in handy because chomp is a lot better than the default app!
Haha .. Lolz ...
Thanks !!
Well that didn't work. When I send a message in my default app, it doesn't ask me to send in chomp sms.

I found a way to get it to work, using the same idea as what you suggested. After trying a third-party app to make chomp my default (didn't work), I thought of doing it this way.
1. Go to "people" app
2. Send message through people app
3. Select chomp to send message, and check the box to make it default.
A lot of people on other forums are saying to disable the default text messaging app. Maybe this works with other SMS apps, but not chomp. When I did this I could not receive texts. Probably because chomp works in conjunction with the default app.
Also, I did read that other SMS apps have an option within the app to make it default. Chomp should add this to make it easier. I did try a 3rd party app that controlled what apps are default, but it didn't work.
Well, now I am having this issue AGAIN. I tried out a few different sms apps to see what I liked best and upon reinstalling chomp I can not get it back on my lock screen no matter what I do... Making it the default app no longer works. Ugh so frustrating. I

Replacing default system apps (Messaging SMS, etc)

So I purchased this phone in november of 2020, the RMX2071 CN and had issues with a lot of the CN Rom quirks. One of the biggest ones was not easily being able to change the default SMS app. The issue I was having was the default SMS app would not handle group texts well (all replies coming back from individuals) This was an incredibly annoying oversight and issue. I was unable to change the default SMS Message from within the Settings > App Management > Default App > Messages > It would only allow the system default. I was able to temporarily change it by downloading the google messages app from the play store, opening it and having it set as default.
Now the odd thing was, using the google messages app would work for a little while (minutes?) and then revert back to the default system app!
A few issues i had while using any third party messages app for SMS was that any time i sent an SMS it would prompt to verify identity on the phone.
I tried a lot of different things, but gave up after a while.
Fast forward to this week. I decided to test disabling a few of the bloatware apps using "adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 <package_to_disable>" and after disabling a ton of the heytap, coloros apps that didnt seem relevant, i tried to disable the default system SMS app, which on my phone was (package:com.android.mms) and tried to set the default sms to google messages using the method above, and after testing for 2 days, it did NOT revert back!
Now the downside is that for some odd reason, when i get a text, the notification doesnt make the sound most of the time, and it still prompts for that ID verification when sending texts, but now I can actually get group texts and send properly!

Question List of applications that can be uninstalled with adb commands

Can we post here the list of safe apps to uninstall with ADB commands?
I just downloaded APK Extractor from the Play Store - I looked for any logos of the apps I would never use and removed them. I can't list every single one as they're all gone now. I only had an issue uninstalling the SMS messaging app. Had to reinstall that one as the system automatically defaults to it. Without it installed, I wasn't getting any texts coming through. Lame!
Great info !
Then uninstal chinese apps is easy and without risk with Apk Extractor ?
Only keep the original sms app and choose an other that we choice for Message (for me it's Signal).

I don't think any messaging apps will work (Google Messages, Signal, etc.) because the Chinese ROM will force default to Oppo Messaging as soon as you receive an SMS/MMS.

How do you mean Oppo forces the official app Mail? It doesn't for me?
I've been using Blackberry Inbox for mail, and it works great and it is the default mail app on my Find N. I've actually uninstalled the official app (just using the normal app uninstall, not adb). So it doesn't force a different mail app for me, and in fact the official mail app is no longer on the phone.
I try now to uninstal official app Mail but in default app for mail it was already AquaMail but no notification for AquaMail ...

I must admit, I have notifications turned off for Blackberry Inbox, as I find mail notifications annoying (as I get too many), and I check my mail regularly anyhow. But you should get mail notifications if you make sure that AquaMail is one of the 5 apps you allow to auto startup, allow it to run in the background, and you turn off battery optimization for the app. Another tip would be to pin the app in task view so that when the memory is cleaned it stays in memory.

I haven't tried as I'm fine using the stock SMS/MMS app, as I don't use SMS/MMS much (mostly Whatsapp/Wechat/Telegram, etc. these days). As I've said somewhere else, I usually try not to fight a new phone, but work with it, and the stock messages app works quite well, and has nice features like tap to fill when you receive a auth code, etc.
There is a setting to change the default messaging app; but others have had problems trying to use another messaging app or dialer/phone app as default (I assume did try setting the default to something else) and apparently it resets to the system default? Worth a go though.
Failing that, you could probably get it working using the same method that the community got the Nova Launcher working (combination of adb and tasker) -
Nova Launcher lock rotation brave toggle desktop-mode (Using Tasker)
Using Tasker to change the default launcher for OPPO FIND N, by canceling Oppo's method to enforce their launcher. -- Requirements 1- Tasker (paid ~3$). --- Autoinput (2$), for Brave desktop/phone mode auto switiching. 2- Launcher of your...

Again, sorry I haven't tried that, as I don't use group SMS/MMS messaging; I use Whatsapp/Wechat/Telegram for that type of group messaging. In the UK MMS messages are usually an additional (sometimes expensive) cost, and so it has never really taken off here as far as I'm aware; and everyone I know uses Whatsapp, etc. for that kind of thing.
I ended up disable-user the following apks :
package:com.coloros.karaoke
package:com.heytap.music
package:com.iflytek.speechsuite
package:com.coloros.weather.service
package:com.oplus.apprecover
package:com.oplus.pay
package:com.oplus.vip
package:com.heytap.reader
package:com.coloros.oshare
package:com.oplus.wifisecuredetect
package:com.oplus.appdetail
package:com.oppo.community
package:com.coloros.securityguard
package:com.heytap.speechassist
package:com.coloros.codebook
package:com.coloros.phonemanager
package:com.coloros.securepay
package:com.coloros.directui
package:com.coloros.video
package:com.coloros.filemanager
package:com.coloros.ocrscanner
package:com.nearme.instant.platform
package:com.coloros.floatassistant
package:com.coloros.childrenspace
package:com.heytap.htms
package:com.coloros.remoteguardservice
and uninstalled following:
com.heytap.cloud
com.finshell.wallet
cn.wps.moffice.lite
com.oppo.store
com.baidu.input_oppo
com.opos.ads
com.coloros.assistantscreen
com.heytap.browser
com.heytap.pictorial
com.heytap.smarthome
com.coloros.favorite
com.oplus.safecenter
The preinstalled music, video, reader, wallet and browser are pretty much just adware, get rid of them as quick as possible
These security apk are forcing you to input oppo account password to install apk, but please keep in mind, disable or uninstall them all-together: com.oplus.vip(yes it's related to apk installation), com.oplus.appdetail, com.coloros.securityguard, com.coloros.phonemanager, they are calling each-other when you install apps, by just removing some of them, you are risking breaking apk installer functionality, but I've tested after get ride of them, all non-sense just disappeared
And I personally will never use it's build-in password manager, voice assistant, float ball navigator, cloud service, file manager and baidu input so I disabled them, keep those you want
One thing, adb can't disable or uninstall built-in app store, and in some situation, I use it to install some Chinese specific apps.

You don't delete them in the app. You have to delete them using a command prompt on your PC. The app just tells you the package name of each app so you know what to delete.
