[Q] Frustration with lockscreen delay... Is there a solution? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there, Ive had a SGS2 for about 24 hours now and am about ready to send it back and get a refund. Its driving me insane. One one had, its a fantastic phone, looks great, fast as hell, really neat features.
But one feature I cant stomach is the 10 second lag I get when waking the phone. 10 seconds from when I press home or power to being able to open the lock screen. Is anyone else experiencing this?
I understand from other posts that this may be related to a power saving feature, but in all honesty, what other phones have this poor response time?
Does anyone have a solution? Ive tried rooting, updating firmware, kernel, lockscreen etc. No joy. It kills me that I have to send it back because of this stupid bitty issue, but I will break this phone in frustration in a few weeks if I keep it...
S

You should get it replaced. Mine is .5 seconds before it turns on. it's REALLY fast to turn on on mine. I'd say faster than my iphone 4. I think you've got a fuddy duddy.

I have a sneaky suspicion you're exaggerating the delay by about 9 seconds. I agree a delay of any sort on a phone of this spec is annoying (my MIUI flashed HD2 had zero delay) but is it enough to return the phone? Not in my opinion, it's a software issue.
I will be happy when a solution is discovered of course but for the time being there are more annoying issues on this phone. Like the constant '3G' to 'H' switching on data connection.

nope, you must have something faulty happening there. 10 seconds is not normal at all. not in my experience anyway. There IS a lag unlike any other phone when hitting the home button. I hate it too. but 10 seconds!? That's crazy. If it doesn't cost you then you should get it replaced.
Of course you could try rooting/flashing to see if it helps but then all that extra hassle if it doesn't work and you still have to return it.
'power saving feature' is not true... phone is doing the same as most decent smartphones out there in terms of battery.
despite all this, I love this device. I truly believe it is the best handset available right now. period!

Im afraid Im not exaggerating, just timed it, 9 seconds from lights on to lockscreen being responsive. Ive tried flashing it, Went from Vodafone BUKE1 to XWKE7 and no difference. Will flash it back to BUKE1 and send it back.

Then your phone is faulty. Mine becomes responsive after about a second and has always been that way, even on the stock rom before I rooted or flashed VillainRom. An unusual fault though, as I'd bet my bottom dollar it's software related.

That's a fault. People talk about a small (<1 second) delay... Probably < 0.5s

My SGS2 doesn't even take 0.5secs, its almost instantaneous. you should get an exchange.

@OP- 10 seconds are horrible. Though mine also takes >1 second. But I have noticed that when the Phone is charging (AC/USB) it comes up instantly, the lag occurs when the phone is off charge.
Regards.

I have a small lag too. Sometimes up to 3 sec.
Seams to be a software issue.
10 sec sounds strange...
I'm thinking of a lockscreen replacement.
Is there anyone that will remove the lockscreen delay?

After 6 weeks I'm about ready to nail my Hero to the wall!

Sorry to sound a bit down. It's just that after 6 weeks of increasing hell with my Hero, sorry, Halfwit, I'm really, really missing my Touch Pro2.
1. Phantom Screen Flipping: No one knows the solution to this problem. My home screen now constantly flips to the right. In fact, any screen with an option causes erratic flipping (contact screen, email screen, menu screen etc). It's worse than a landed fish.
2. Random Battery Draining: Usually my Halfwit lasts a full day. Sometimes, though it drains within an hour, for no apparent reason.
3. Ringtone Madness: A couple of days ago I took a call. The call was instantly dropped. But the ringtone kept going. And going. And going.
4. Dropped Calls: probably 3 in 10 calls are dropped, either coming in and going out.
And just to be a little unfair, (but I feel justified): Sense. I've given up switching between "Home", "Office", "Travel", and so on. I could make breakfast in the time it takes to change.
Like I say, I know the entire Universe has had an excellent experience with the Halfwit, so before I return it, can anyone suggest a reasonably polite solution?
You could try flashing the new rom (again) to make sure that process went well.
If the problems consist send it back to htc cos it's not normal to have all these problems.
Yes, to have some many of these non standard issues at the same time, you must have a faulty unit.
I have never heard of a Hero behaving like that. Send it back and get a new one!

Thats a bug when you open the 2G data connection

Take that thing back and get one that works! That stinks you've had so many problems, definitely not normal or acceptable. It's a great phone, sounds like you got a lemon.
Sounds like a software malfunction or maybe your device could have liquid damage in it.. Not sure though, you should take it back to the store!

Serious issue...

Hi there; Could do with some help please I seem to have a series issue with my Samsung Galaxy S2 today. It started this morning; I noticed the screen was randomly turning on; for no reason what so ever. It only does it when the phone isn't charging, if the data cable or the charger is plugged in; it doesn't do it.
Its on version KE7. I have tried a factory reset, and that hasn't sorted the issue. Therefore I seemed to think it was a hardware fault, however with it not being an issue when plugged in I wondered why it might be doing it.
Tap to speak also kept coming up for no apparent reason, I say kept coming up, doesn't happen all the time, but did come up about 6 times today, when I hadn't pressed anything, which would suggest the bottom centre button could be stuck or sticky, however that seems fine; and its not been near any moisture and has been a hot day.
The phone has not ever been rooted; so no issues there.
The phone battery dies very quickly within about 4 hours with the screen turning on all the time; and the phone will randomly freeze up completely, and I have to remove the battery to reset the phone.
Anybody got any ideas? Really could do with some help
Thanks
Rich
Update: It is plugged in charging now; and the MTP Application has come up; like the data cable is plugged in. That seems very odd to me...
Don't be afraid to send it back. These things aren't cheap even if you're paying through your contact, you're entitled to get what you paid for.
Your specific issues may be down to more than one thing. My screen lights up when I've read my gmail on a different device and it needs to clear the notification. Nothing too worrying about that. The other stuff does sound like some sort of shorting though and people have been given replacements for less serious issues.
I'm tempted to get mine swapped because the wifi often won't pick up an IP address and the gps won't get a fix if the phone gets too hot. Relatively minor compared to your issues.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Yeah I think its going to have to, I've tried playing about with settings, giving it time to cool down; pretty much everything I can think of, I really can't think what it could be, it seems to be many issues rather than just one, with it only being a month old, I expected slightly more.
Love the phone, did brilliantly yesterday; used it for lots of things; then today it just suddenly went, took it of charge, and it played up the whole way through.
Given up with it now, will take it back and see if I can get it fixed, I have 24 month warrenty with my contract.
Thanks
Put your original firmware back on if you can before attempting a warranty claim .

Sometimes evo freaks out

I really don't recall dropping my evo 3d, maybe ive done it once or twice. But I am on Dirt Jelly Bean V 3.5.2 Rom and I have an extended battery (3500MHZ) Well occasionally , the touch screen can be un-responsive to icons / apps/ or settings that are more in the middle of the phone. Like if i go to settings and go something in the middle, it will highlight the above or below setting which is not what i wanted to chose. in order to select that setting, i have to rotate my phone to landscape and it will be clickable. Also occasionally i will get the possessed evo, where if you turn it on it will random click apps and on home screen randomly move left to right to left to right. i have to turn screen off and literally hit the phone to get it back to normal. Part of me says get a new phone but i am holding out til my upgrade in april
I had that happen quite recently (last week). It started off randomly doing something similar every now and then. Finally one day I had to keep turning off and on my phone just to be able to use the screen for about 5 seconds.
Conclusion: Bad screen.
I took mine into the Sprint store (i have the insurance). They took it right away and replaced the screen within 30 minutes. No charge to me, and it has been working like new since.
I would suggest backing up your rom and flashing to another to see if that helps (mine would press things while in touch recoveries, so i knew it was fubar). Try putting in the original battery because i have heard batteries can do weird things. But most likely you have a bad screen. There are videos on how to replace and i'm sure eBay has some for cheap.
Good luck

^^^ This is probably the case. It's a well documented problem with these phones, and one that I experience myself to a lesser degree. One thing NinjaPenguin didn't mention and is often overlooked is; make sure your screen is clean. I know it sounds silly, maybe even obvious, but a dirty screen can also cause phantom and misaligned button presses.

Screen flickering madness

I got my 920 today and I'm quite happy with it. However I'm facing a weird issue. My screen is noticeably flickering. At first I tried to restart the phone a few times, and at last with a soft reset I got rid of it in some areas (eg the unlock screen) but in some others (typing an address in the browser, typing into Bing search) it's still there, even tho it's not very noticeable anymore. However I'm quite picky so it annoys me a bit, also I don't think it's fair that I have to use a phone behaving this way. Anybody else having this? Workarounds of any sort? Otherwise I guess this guy is going back to the store...
Edit: I found out that this issue pretty much comes and goes randomly, I happen to have it for a few hours then it goes away, so on so forth. I really don't know if I'll ever be able to get the phone replaced if the issue is so hard to be reproduced.
Same intermittent problem

You're not going crazy as I have the same issue with my 920. It is VERY intermittent and probably happens about once every 3 weeks I guess.
I'll wake the phone to check it and it seems that the display is not working fully and looks interlaced and flickering. No loss of functionality and when I put it to sleep and wake it up a few times it's fine and back to normal. Appears to be an intermittent issue with either the display or drivers but no way to reproduce unless you separately take a video/photo of the screen when it is in this state when you are returning it to the store for an exchange. For me it doesn't happen enough to really worry me although it is slightly annoying...

Man, this is driving me nuts. I noticed it does it every time the phone reaches a somewhat hotter temperature (like body temperature, a couple minutes of usage normally) or when it's plugged. When the battery is 100% loaded it usually stops, but then after a few minutes it comes back, very annoying. Since it does it like 90% of the time I guess the guys at the shop will notice it, when I'm at max brightness it's like a freaking strobe, I can't take this any longer, makes my head ache. One thing I also noticed is the fact that the lowest light setting available is still way brighter than when on auto in a dark room: low looks more like medium, so to speak. Is this ok?
Today I'm bringing it back to the shop anyway, I'll keep you posted.
Update: I got my phone replaced. We had to open 3 boxes before finding a non flickering one, insane. For the last try I decided to open a white one and it was flawless, weird...
Are you guys in cold areas or keep your phones in cold areas? By cold I mean under 65 F. I have noticed in certain types of LCD's that if they are cold they seem to slow in refresh rate. Try warming your phone up and see if it gets better.

Not really my case I guess, actually the phone kept acting up even after an hour usage, so it was plenty hot. No problems with new one so far, fingers crossed...

[Q] Issues (stock)

Dear all,
I've been waiting a little before rooting and installing a new ROM to make sure I don't need to return my phone for any reason. (So, it is stock now, no root, locked bootloader, KNOX still there, etc.)
So, far I've noticed three small problems, which I don't know if they are universal or just mine:
Sometimes when I get a call, the touch screen is irresponsive. If I press the lock/power button twice, it seems to work again. (I now have set up to press home to answer.)
It often feels a bit warm, more than I'd expect. (I have it in a case, though, a Spigen Slim Armor. It fits perfectly though.) But this happens sometimes when it is just sitting, not playing games. It is not really hot, but I can feel it warm in my pocket.
Sometimes I get a pop between songs. See this post
(So, at least one person also has the last problem.)
I can live with any of the problems above, but I'd hesitate to have a defective unit which can have bigger problems later on. Is any of the above an issue for you? Any suggestions if I should exchange the phone?
Thanks!
Luis
Do you remember when were the times when the screen was unresponsive?
I've read somewhere that sometimes when the screen is woken up and is under some pressure this will happen, and the only way is to do what you did. It's not uncommon in touchscreen phones though, so I wouldn't worry about it.
The verge app was broken until the most recent app update. Also, the s5 seems to refuse allowing Dashlane's accessibility service from working properly. So no more auto filling passwords for me. Ugh. I hoped rooting might help but it didn't. Now I really can't wait for custom ROMs to start appearing. Samsung, you make great hardware (like amoled displays) but your software sucks. Even the software on my Samsung TV is stupid.
Yes on two out of three!

The unresponsive screen is more than a little issue, it is being reported all over the web, and get's more severe over time. I'm thinking that it is a bad proximity sensor defect, either firmware, hardware or software. Some people are reporting along with myself that sometimes for no apparent reason, the screen will not turn on even though the phone is completely operational! This has happened to me four times now and I am stock with very few apps on my phone, five total games and Pandora. I do use a substitute launcher that I've used for years but I don't believe that would be the issue since others report the same issue with stock launcher.
The pop or skipping you speak of in sound happens to many of us who stream music in our automobiles. It even happens on the note3. The fix is simple for that one though! Turn the screen on. I was told that with many of the streaming software music programs that the phones CPU goes to sleep and does not offer enough processing power to the music program. I stream all day via bluetooth to my Auto's sound system and it will usually start to skip, click or whatever after the phone has been untouched for about twenty minutes. The second I turn the screen on the problem alleviates itself. You can find even more information by googling that one, in fact both of those! The heat one I have not had, both with stock battery and zero lemon high capacity battery. The phone very rarely get's warm. However, when I was using wireless charging it would get warm even after charging was complete but I believe that is a normal event with QI type tech.
