[Q] what do I loose with factory reset & keyb question - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
forum search is temporary disabled, I am sure this must have been asked over and over again, but.. here I go:
I have a sgs2 reflashed to XWKE7 baseband, (O2 rebranded to generic) and rooted
I see that the software is basically all the same as it was before, all the hubs, bbc player etc etc
- But I would like to perform a factory hard reset (is it called like this?), besides my own data, sync settings etc am I going to loose any of the installed pieces of software ?
- Can someone remember me the code for the factoryt hard reset please ?
- Regarding keyboard to get to the additional accent characters under one key when pressing and keeping the finger on I notice it takes just a bit too long to show them. Is there any hidden option to get it to show faster ?
Maybe I was just too used to old mobile keys for sms writing
- I still haven´t installed either smart keyboard, better keyboard or perfect keyboard from android market, which one is your favorite for clumsy finger people like me, always pressing the side or up key instead of the right one?
best rgds

From what I read, there is essentially an image of your firmware saved in the system memory somewhere; that image will contain everything in your firmware before you start mucking with it, including any apps you remove. When you factory reset, anything in that image gets put back, so you'd have to remove/re-freeze/whatever any apps you removed before the factory reset.

becuase when you do a factory reset after the reset it does a quick reinstall of all apps the the default csc that you have.. and those must be in it.

Hmm. That IS strange. But sounds like it should only be an issue when you do a factory reset, right? How many times do you do a factory reset that this becomes that big of a pain?

[Q] Factory reset / complete wibe with a broken screen !!

Hi everyone,
First I am no expert, but I've been going through all possible forums for a solution to my problem with no easy solution. I've cracked my screen on my Samsung SII i9100 (current firmware version: I9100JPKG2/I9100OJPKG1/I9100XXKF1/I9100JPKG2 DBT). I have replaced the Firmware once a year ago through Odin as I needed to access different languages no available on the original firmware. I think it is not rooted! If it is then it wasn't intentional . Now I am trying to send it for repair. The phone still connects to USB and Kies and through it I managed to delete all contacts, pictures and media. I accessed the internal memory and cleaned up all folders I previously placed on it, but didn't have the guts to go further through what looked like system or application folders.
Now I need to wipe all the account data, memos, and applications. Since I have no visibility, I tried a hardware factory reset like 5 times but it never worked, I've confirmed that. Read a couple of times about something called "adb" and how I maybe can wipe such data through it, or maybe use my computer monitor as a screen! Despite a whole day of reading and downloading and trying stuff, didn't manage to get it right.
If anybody has a solution for this problem, please don't spare on details, flying blind is difficult
Thanks in advance

[Q] "ussd code running"

I have a problem on my Galaxy S3, running android 4.1.1 on Vodafone network in the UK. It is not rooted.
I want to make sure the phone is unlocked before buying a sim card for use in France
Using the stock dialer, "*#7465625#" gives me "ussd code running" followed by "Unknown command".
Looking around elsewhere, others have blamed it on Mobile Tracker, which as far as I can see, I don't have. The only solution I have seen is a factory reset, which is a scary prospect for me, not having any idea what that entails. And then reinstalling apps one by one until the culprit is found. I have also seen comments about ussd security issues. I am slowly heading out of my depth here (I know my way round windows quite well, but phones are unknown territory for me,).
I am hoping some clever souls on this forum might be able to help. Is this a known, and solved, problem? Or is a factory reset my best bet?
If I have to reset, I know where the reset is in the menu system - on the same page as a checked box saying backup. So...does does the back up happen automatically or when I press reset or have I got it completely wrong? If not, which files do I need to save away from the phone? What happens to things like contacts I can remove the external SD card, so that won't be an issue. How do I reinstall the apps, particularly the ones I have already paid for?
I have spent most of the afternoon tried to get a handle on this and my head is spinning now.
Any help at all, would be very warmly received.
Polly
1st solution : root your phone, very easy procedure then you can flash the same stock ROM from sammobile.com to become unrooted again without wiping/resetting your phone.
2nd solution: download APPSAVER from market for free, then you can save all the applications you have downloaded but not the DATA (for example you can save the game itself but not the progress you have achieved)
as for the contacts, go to the contacts folder - menu import/export - export to usb storage and voila all your contacts will be written in a single file that you can import after you reset your phone
as for SMS, you can download "SMS Backup & Restore" from market for free to backup then restore your SMSs
after you perform the above, go to Settings - Back up and reset - Factory data reset and your phone will be back as you received it.
On the other hand if the phone is locked you can always unlock it using Voodoo S3 on the Play Store, it can sim-unlock your device if you're rooted of course.
Great reply, thank you!
Rooting...a bit loth to do that while still under guarantee and at my level of experience. One day I will get hold of an old phone and try it with that first.
Appsaver - what a brilliant app, thank you again. If it is one particular app that is the problem (and that is the sense that I get from elsewhere), then I can use this to back up my apps, uninstall them all, check for the ussd error. If it has disappeared, then reinstall apps one at a time until the error reappears. If it hasn't disappeared, then I can go the reset route, after backing up contacts and SMS.
Thank you so much for your help.

Ah. The more I try to read up on this, it feels the more lost I get.
How do I check whether the phone is unlocked...borrow someone's micro sim card?

[SOLVED] Application defaults keep resetting.

Hi all,
I wonder if anyone can shed any light on the following issue I have recently encountered; Application Defaults keep resetting. When the dialog pops up I select the app to use (for example, if reading an NFC tag I select from NFC ReTag Pro, NFC Task Launcher and NFC Taginfo - though it occurs with more than just this example) and hit the button to remember my choice. However, at the next reboot, all of these settings are gone, and I have to re-choose.
Here are the details.
Phone: GT-I9300
Android Version: 4.1.2 Stock build for United Kingdom O2, rooted (Odin + chainfire's excellent CF Auto-root)
Specifics:
Baseband version: I9300BWELK1
Kernel Version 3.0.31-566833
Build Number JZO54K.I9300XXELL4
Applications removed from O2 build(uninstall updates, disable, remove apk, reboot):
Amazon MP3
Top 40 Chart
eBay
Is the problem reproducible? Yes, a reboot resets the defaults
Have you wiped and reflashed? Yes, twice, and the problem still occurs prior to re-root and prior to removing the bloatware.
Anything else we should know about? Yes, I'm running Droidwall, and have disabled (not uninstalled) the following:
Yahoo! News
Yahoo! Finance
Video Hub
Samsung TTS (lightflow issues)
Samsung Push Service
Samsung Backup Provider
S Suggest
Game Hub.
Anything else?
Yeah, I suspect it isn't relevant, but I have a Cryptonite partition on my SD card, mounted on the internal card for things like bank statements.
So ...
Has anyone encountered this problem before (bearing in mind a wipe and reflash didn't help), or - if not - can they point me in the direction of someone who might be able to help?
P.S. I've been going down the route of a SQLite problem, but have hit a knowledge wall (specifically my own lack of it!)
P.P.S Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

Though I have no idea of your problem..I like the way you have put your question..I hope someone will be able to answer it..
Most probably the settings are not being written into the data partition properly or the sqlite database gets deleted after every reboot. .

Thanks! I used to help out over on experts-exchange, and one of my pet hates was threads like "Hai, my router duzent work, plz help!", so I tried to avoid doing that to you.
Yeah, the db not being written properly was my first guess, but I lack the in-depth knowledge of Android to debug it further.
Re: [Q] Application defaults keep resetting.
Ok. Here's an update. I started getting more problems, apps would update but after the next reboot would revert back to their older versions.
Suspecting a permissions problem I walked through /. but nothing was amiss so I traced the date the problem started to the same day I installed 'root app delete' by TOPDEV from the market.
I uninstalled that and, voilà, all working again. I'll let the developer know, but otherwise consider this myth busted. Uh... I mean problem solved!

You need to reset the phone.
Go to settings -> Backup&reset -> Factory data reset.
Note that Backup&reset is located in settings under "Personal" -> "more".
