[Q] Any GB Roms for Vibrant with working GPS? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Has anyone found any GB ROMs with working GPS? I was contemplating doing the hardware GPS fix for the vibrant, but I've been wondering if that would be enough to get the GPS working on GB ROMs. I sound like a total noob, I know, but any help here would be greatly appreciated. Froyo ROMs are great on the Vibrant but I am going to go out on a limb here and say that I think most of them are nearing the end of their development. Thanks everyone.

Well the hardware doesn't seem to be the problem. It is the lack of GPS files from a leak. With froyo we had a leak very early on so this was never a problem.
Yesterday devs found a leak (on samfirmware) for the galaxy s 4g (GPS chip identical to vibrant) that helped them to create a functioning GPS on gingerbread oon our phone.
You can switch to any JVB rom and flash the GPS fix and follow instructions from there to have a a functional gingerbread rom. There are a few problems, like that you can't turn the GPS off and on and it still work. You have to reboot to get it to lock on again. Also some people were reporting that their compass was switched around. But you and I can probably assume that that will be fixed in the near future. Hope I could help

Theres a fix in the works from birgertime on the development board. Only for JVP roms though it looks like.

I believe it's still in the work. Hopefully soon.
If you can't live without GPS, then don't switch over to a 2.3 base yet.

Hi,
the ROM indeed great, but I have a problem with the GPS.
it works for me only the first time after a reboot.
the 2nd, 3rd attempt etc. dont lock.
I do not know if I have to change anything in the LBS conf, and I cannot reply in the development forum cause I am new.
anyone had a similar problem?
//Morris

You don't need to change anything. Most of these gingerbread ROMs that have GPS working mention the fact there is a bug. The GPS works, but you can't get it to work again without rebooting if you turn it off.

Hi,
I understand I have the keep the GPS always turned (at least the option marked as on)
my problem is with my Sat Nav app.
it locks fast for the first time, but doesn't anymore after I close the app and start it again (even after a few minutes).

On the revolution rom which I like I can't get a gps lock at all no matter reboots or anything

GPS issues?

I know the Vibrant doesn't come out for a few more days but one thing that has made me very hesitant about purchasing this device are the GPS issues found on the international Galaxy S. Supposedly the phone wont lock on more than 8 satellites or any satellites with less than 20 snr. People are reporting the nav cursor will quite often jump around if it loses signal. I use Google Navigation a lot and this would be a huge problem.
Anyone else concerned? Hopefully the US firmware will have fixed this.
I'm also curious about this. Can somone who has gotten their hands on the vibrant early comment?
I've got mine... it seems to work better then the G1, locks really fast.
check the other threads - the issue does seem to have been firmware version related
the one user, sdjean - his phone did a 180 in terms of gps reception, and there's another interesting comment from another user that experienced gps reception / sat lock issues at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725748
i had the same concerns but after seeing the issues resolving from firmware updates and other postings as the above, i'm going ahead
And months later, the GPS still has problems.

Mine was horrid when running stock 2.1 JI6.
Running Bionix-v for the last few days and the GPS has been right on the money. First time since owning the phone that it locks on and nails my position in under 30 seconds.

Actually, I was running JI6 stock until I upgraded to KA6 via Mini Kies a few days ago. The GPS was HORRIBLE. No lock at all no matter how long I left it.
BUT I decided to do a factory reset before turning the phone in and it turns out that fixed everything. I get locks indoors now.

Can anyone help me out? I'm very familiar with running custom roms on captivates. But did a vibrant for a friend yesterday and installed Bionix-v as it seems like that is a popular rom that is supposed to help GPS. But his GPS will not lock at all. I was going to post something in that thread but didn't want to get flamed to hell. Are there any roms that are better for GPS? Or maybe I should try flashing Bionix again? I also read somewhere that there is some sort of hardware fix for the vibrant?
Thanks
Download Samsung GPS Restore apps from the Market and after install reboot your phone then run apps when its done then reboot your phone, then try open your GPS Navigation and test it, mine works after upgrade my Samsung Vibrant official froyo from t-mobile.

I flashed Bionix V and the GPS works fine, but if it doesn't, I would try a factory reset first. The Samsung Restore App made mine worst when I was still on stock JI6. It might work for you though, it gives different results. There is a thread in General forums for Vibrant that shows you how to hardware fix the Vibrant. It's called Correct GPS Fix or something like that.

I don't know of any devs who have altered the GPS code from Samsung, and regardless there is no sure thing to fix anyone's GPS issues.
If your GPS doesn't work, try a few different software versions and GPS settings. There is no miracle cure.

from my experience, they all work the same as long as drivers are present. What changes are the settings in lbstest. I always set the server to auto config and it learns pretty quick, but I'm in Japan.

Exactly. These guys aren't fixing anything. Generally speaking, these guys theme ROM's. With some basic scripting of tasks and features. Devs.......I still laugh at that.
How to fix your GPS:
1) Accept that the Samsung Galaxy S GPS will never be fixed, just slightly improved upon a forever ****ty performing GPS. If you can accept this, then you are 1 step closer to enjoying your GPS.
2) Never f*ck with your GPS settings ever again after this day.
3) Download GPSRestore made by Samsung in the Android Market.
4) Run the program, if still having GPS problems then do a full factory format by dialing this into your phone *2767*3855#.
5) If still having problems after running the GPSRstore and doing a factory format via that code, then exchange the phone, and NEVER EVER EVER listen to anyone who suggests you should f*ck around with the LBStestmode settings on your new replacement.
6) Once again, stop tinkering with the GPS settings
7) One more time, leave the GPS settings alone.
Hope that helps, if all else fails, return the Vibrant, get a different phone, and never touch the GPS settings on that phone either.
Master has used the following GPS fix in his roms.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9551790
I'm using this on nero b2 and it fixes on to 9/12 satellites for me in most locations under 10 seconds when directly under the sky and under 30-40 seconds when inside a building.
You can also search for an app called GpsRestore by Samsung Mobile in the Market. Depending on your rom, as long as it recognizes your device, it can work wonders. For best results go outside when you run it. When I tried it it took me from 50 meters to <10. Good luck.

[Q] Best Gingerbread ROM for GPS & Google Navigation

Does anyone have firsthand experience with using Google Navigation on the various Gingerbread ROMs out there?
I'd really like a CM7 or MIUI ROM but it seems like their GPS, even though it locks, doesn't seem to play well in Navigation. Thanks.
The gps problem is a hardware problem not a software problem meaning no matter how well devs make a rom the physical gps antenna is not capable of working to the same quality of the rom
Unfortunately none of the GB roms are going to match Froyo roms in terms of GPS compatibility and accuracy. Moreover, they all use the same hack so gps performance between the GB roms will be close. Unless Samsung and T-mobile release an official GB rom, there will always be little querks here and there. If you rely on GPS, I'd stick to a Froyo rom or buy an external bluetooth GPS.

On GB ROMs it's a software problem.
My current Froyo ROM has near perfect GPS for Navigation, and I never applied the hardware antenna fix.

same goes for you, which is why you shouldn't talk as if you know everything ..... the hardware fix is the only solution so far if your on GB, I'm on GB and have tried every rom that say gps fixed and if you consider 220 to 40 meters accurate (721 ft to 131ft) then go for it otherwise zip it!! IF THE OP DOES GET A SATISFYING GPS ON GB THAT MEANS HIS VIBRANT WAS MADE AFTER OCTOBER!!

The hardware fix and the GB GPS issues are independent of each other. It's true that the hardware fix will increase your SNR for your satellite signals across all ROMs, but the underlying issue with GB is that the agspd settings are off because of a lack of drivers, and thus adjusting your antenna is not a true "fix" for any GB ROM.
I misunderstood your original post since it wasn't answering my question. If you had said "I'm on GB and have tried every rom that say gps fixed and if you consider 220 to 40 meters accurate (721 ft to 131ft)" to begin with, then I would have understood. I appreciate it though.

isn't it funny how that worked out, I bought my vibrant sooner thinking the newer vibrants were made better because they'd have to undergo more testing before being completely mass produced but instead the later vibrants had revisions on the gps antennae made

Help me find a ROM that has working GPS plz!

Hi everyone I have been using a handful of different roms and I can't find a single one that has GPS working.
Am I doing something wrong?
I tried AOKP glitched milestone 6 w/devil and GPS does not work, tried THS build 15, and a couple JB roms.
I must be doing something wrong here since I cant get GPS working perfectly on any of them.
Sometimes it will kick in after ive been driving for like 10 minutes and then go away when I really need it. WTF is going on here?
I'll go back to GB if I have to. Anyone have any tips or advice on what I can do to get some solid GPS performance here?
Thank you so much!
Lastly, I've been trying to find a mirror for AOKP Milestone 6 Standard (without devil) but the links on the AOKP site are all dead. Anyone? ty!
Try this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5lY2xpcHNpbS5ncHNzdGF0dXMyIl0. and see if it helps. When I was having GPS issues (on 2.2 stock) this helped me to get a lock. However, I will say since I went to 2.3 and then AOKP M6 I've had no trouble with GPS, so your mileage may vary. Have you always had problems with GPS, or only since you've been trying custom roms?

I'm still using Slim ICS with 4.0.4. The GPS is ok, it works but still not great. I don't think my phone will ever be great though. I want to try out SlimBean but it seems they are having GPS issues among other things.
Honestly, I've found that GPS can be a real hit or miss depending on your specific phone.
All hardware is not created equally, unfortunately. I'd suggest testing a few different roms and find which works best
for you specifically...because I've had luck with GPS on roms where users have reported bad GPS, and no GPS on roms where
awesome GPS was reported.
Good luck!

I would use either PA or CM10, but you need to flash the 3 gps fix files located somewhere in the PA thread. I would not use Slimbean 3.0 if you really need GPS since even if you do flash the files, no satellites come in view at all. I got a lock below 10 sec outside driving on monday at 7:30 pm. Accuracy was about ~25 feet, so it was really good. I was on CM10. Anyway, both have really good GPS as long as you have the 3 GPS files. They are called: GPS - Experia Files, YAGF2, and cwm-cm9-gps-wrap. Flash it in the order I wrote it in. They arent hard to find. Just type the names into Google. Or look in the PA thread. Good luck bro, and as Xenoism said, it also varies with device. If your device was made before Nov 2010, you probably wont get a lock no matter what unless you did the hardware fix. Even with the hardware fix, you'll still need these 3 files.
EDIT: Because I'm nice, I found the post where Jrafael posted the GPS files. It is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33575684&postcount=504
I have great gps with SlimBean and the 3gps fixes, its even better than my Galaxy Nexus. However, I owned a couple Vibrant and they all seem to have difference performance. Try the hardware gps fix if you're brave.
Note that for SlimBean if you patch mismatched patches it can make GPS stop working completely, only patch gapps from their own site.

Which version of Slimbean are you on? 2.9 works fine, but 3.0 is stone dead. (From my experience and a bunch of other members) I flashed the files and rebooted, tried getting a lock and not even one satellite appeared. Usually on other roms i get locks in less than 10 secs and after deep sleep, less than 20. I dont think he'll need the hardware fix if his phone is built after Nov 2010. But if its built before, then he'll definitely need it if he needs GPS that bad. That or get a new phone with GPS or buy a GPS :good:
