New here? READ THIS THREAD FIRST. What Is Recovery & Download Mode? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm now going to try and explain some basic concepts of the SGS2, in a very simple way, with illustrations. First of all, a few pieces of terminology.
CWM (Clockworkmod) Recovery Mode:
After flashing a CWM kernel (like CF-Root), you enter recovery with the key combination of Vol Up + Home + Power
{

}
CWM recovery is where you flash ROMs, and other zip files. Use the volume keys to navigate, and the home key to select.
Stock (3e) Recovery (not much use):
Entered with the key combination of Vol Up + Home + Power. Not readily accessible if using a CWM kernel like CF-Root
This is the default Android recovery image. It is of little use other than wiping the data partition via factory reset. If you have this, you are NOT ready to start flashing custom ROMs, and will get various errors until you have recovery showing like in the first picture.
Download mode (for use with ODIN/Heimdall):
Accessible on all phones, regardless of kernel via Vol Down + Home + Power
This is where you flash tar or tar.md5 files from ODIN on your PC.
Don't mix up these different modes. Each has a different purpose. So now you know what each mode is, and how to get to it.

Vol Up + Home + Power , if you press Power button first the phone will just turn on and start booting.
Great guide btw, going to be helpful to a lot of people

Knew that. Though I too had to search for this before, so it's good for the new users. Should be sticky so that people don't ask un-necessary questions of this type before they even search. You could also add many more basics things. I may, also, have something more to learn here.
Good Work Mate.
Edit: Forgot to see download mode.

Thanks
As usual helpful and clear,
Thanks,

i would like to make the small suggestion of adding the words "Recovery and Download Mode and other essential things to know" to the thread title (the last bit in case you want to expand on the info later on).

yo
Thanks for that very helpful. can i ask though what is that cant access system/csc/***/system/ error in recovery e3 all about?

Great, should be stickied.
I think it could also benefits the newcomers if an explanation was given regarding:
- the fact that ROMs can also include a kernel which contains CWM (wasn't clear to me first time I flashed my SGS2)
- the fact that CWM also comes as part of an app (rom manager) but that ironically you need a custom kernel to reboot in R&D mode (again something I had a hard time understanding at the beginning).

As I understand, just as a demonstration Pulser was trying to flash a multi-language CSC package in CWM recovery. Which doesn't work.
So please don't try this at home, because your shiny new phone might explode into a cloud of Anthrax.

I rooted my phone with cf root firmware and then reflashed the stock kernal over the top to get rid of the yellow exclamation mark... thats when i got that system csc error... I just reflashed the cf firmware and are living with the yella ! Until i get a jig. strange.
Also are there any guides on samsung modding... firmware/kernal/rom info. i came from modding my motorola backflip. it was quite simply just flash the rom no firmware kernel etc... so i feel out of my depth a little. any links or help much appreciated

Well stock kernel is supposed to be flashed in ODIN (download mode), after you flash that then you can boot to system and use CWM app to flash zImage extracted from CF-Root kernel package. After reboot the triangle will dissapear.
Anyways here is the link to a root guide and stock firmwares:

Clockworkmod installation how to for windows / *nix

THESE FILES ARE ONLY FOR THE VERIZON FASCINATE
THESE FILES HAVE NOT BEEN TESTED ON ANY OTHER SGS PHONE BY ME
THESE FILES WILL PROBABLY NOT WORK FOR YOUR PHONE IF IT IS NOT A VERIZON FASCINATE
First, download and install the samsung drivers found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=779238
Then download odin from here: https://sites.google.com/a/imnuts.net/android/update-to-dj05/Odin.zip?attredirects=0&d=1
Then download the clockwork package from here: http://goo.gl/HELdr
If you have a lag fix installed, remove it. This is my opinion, and is completely optional. But i do not recommend the lag fixes, as the ones that install / work on the fascinate do nothing really, just wait for voodoo port
Then:
Put phone into download mode.
-Turn off phone
-Pull battery
-Press vol down button while plugging into computer
-Should show a yellow triangle
Open odin on pc
-Odin should show a yellow bar with a com port showing that it detects your phone
Click "PDA" button and select the CWMrecovery.tar you downloaded earlier
Click start
This will reboot your phone when complete. This flashes both the kernel and the recovery partition to enable you to flash update.zips signed with test keys. You will need to download Rom Manager from the market and select flash Clockwork Mod and select "fascinate"
To use clockwork, you can reboot recovery and Rom Manager, or cold boot into recovery (power off phone, power back on while holding both volume keys). If you cold boot into recovery you need to select apply update.zip and it will launch ClockworkMod.
Optional: ClockworkMod update.zip file (place this in your sdcard's root, and only download this if you cannot get into rom manager) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/458252/Fascinate Files/update.zip

Big thanks to lilinser / dkcldark; koush; humancyborg, namebrandon, geeknik, and many others that were testing and constantly flashing their phones!
And without ludeboy, well, i wouldnt even be able to get into download mode to fix my phone in the first place
Thank you!
I didn't pull the battery, just turned the phone off while holding the volume down button. Maybe I should have, as it is stuck on the Nandroid backup on Linux.ex2.
Edit, spoke too soon. I unplugged the USB cable, and is finished updating. Bring on the kernels! I want to see what this does clocked.
If you do a Nandroid backup with the lagifx installed it takes a LONG time
edit: I have done all of my odin work with the battery in and have had 0 problems
also remember, if you try to boot into recovery and you dont see it. FLASH THE RECOVERY IN ROM MANAGER TWICE.

Yes, nandroid backups will take a LONG time to complete if you are using a lagfix. I would start removing the lagfix now, we have something much much better planned for you guys.
And pulling the battery isnt necessary, just insures that new people get it done right, eliminates some questions / problems.
Removed lagfix, and confirmed that everything here works.

stock roms can be found in my odin restore thread, at least as close to stock as we can get right now.
Thanks ya'll, you guys are awesome!!!!!!!
So I have a question....may be a dumb one....but why is it called Odin? Is that Samsung specific? The reason I ask is Odin was a code name for the 9550 storm and so it confuses me. Thanks and sorry for off topic.
success
it worked perfectly as described...
i removed lagfix first
ran ROM Manager (premium i flashed CWM twice, just to be sure...
i backed it up in ROM Manager.. when i rebooted to recovery from RM i got an MD5 checksum error when trying to restore..
I then ran a backup while in recovery.. during that backup i got no /sdcard/.android_secure found but it seemed to complete.
I used restore created from nandroid and it completed error free. (tho it did take a while, even with no lagfix (lots of data, apparently))
My phone booted just fine afterwards.... but it did sit for a while at the VZW splash screen. it made be nervous.. but i was patient
THANK YOU!
EDIT: In RM... i renamed the backup that i made in CMR and then chose to restore... it booted into CMR as expected and started restoring... completed successfully.
when it completes booting... i get a system alarm tone that doesnt go away until i use the notification pulldown... it did after both times i used the recovery.
Now that we have clockworkmod we can remove apps as long as we backed up right? I was getting rid of some bloat but stopped before i went to far. Sorry for sounding like a noob

[Q] Rooting Samsung Galaxy I500

Im having problems, with the root everytime I try to update the phone. It starts up the it gives me an error. I've also tried fixing the signature and still nothing. Does anyone have idea of what might be wrong with it.
Did you remember to wipe the intake manifolds? Also make sure the flux capacitor is set to "low".

Ok I've rooted my phone with Z4root. I've got rom manager and Superuser. Now once it's been rooted it says that it will reboot and update. Well every time it goes to update it will begin then it comes up with an error saying failed to get signature.
You need to install clockworkmod so you can use custom recovery to "update things"

Here is the link for odin: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7223192/RootSF/Odin3 v1.3.exe Download and install it on your PC. Once it is installed, open it. Then turn off your phone and pull the battery out. Hold the volume down button and at the same time plug your phone into the PC. It should go into download mode. Find the PDA button (in odin) and click it. ONLY USE THE PDA BUTTON!!! Then find the linked file I gave you earlier and select it for PDA. Then hit start. When you see a green "pass", unplug the cable and put the battery back in and hold down both the volume buttons and power button at the same time. Hold them until you see the samsung logo. You will then boot into cwm recovery. From there you can flash whatever rom or kernel that you have already put on your SD card.
Don't use rom manager on the fascinate.....that's a problem

Wow, way to NOT answer the guy's question. He's trying to, what I can see, do an OTA update, which WILL fail if you're rooted.
You HAVE to remove root if you're trying to do an OTA update.
Also, Stock Samsung Recovery will fail on unsigned zips. you would need the hacked 2e recovery, or just flash ClockworkMod with Odin.

No but seriously, what exactly are you trying to do with your fascinate/i500? Trying to put a new version of android on it? Just trying to get root? We have fairly standard ways of doing things now-a-days depending on what you're doing.

I can not connect to my i500 with USB. I have the issue I have read about where connecting to a laptop only charges the device. I have tried every trick I could find and no go. So, Odin and similar methods are out for me. I have root. So, whatever options I have, have to be performered on the device itself. If I could get a recovery to replace stock, that would be a start. Then I could disable signature verification and the like. I could try methods using terminal emulation or something similar. I just know there has got to be a way to do more than root the i500 without using USB! Any suggestions?

App to flash recovery (CWM {or} Stock)! Update (safety fixes) PLEASE DOWNLOAD!

Ok guys, first of all I have to say that you cannot access recovery without something like quickboot -or- rom manager so please get your preferred app for this.
I AM NOT LIABLE IF YOU SOMEHOW MANAGE TO **** UP A ONE CLICK APP! Do not ask me for support. Learn something and fix it yourselves.
Next, I will say that AlbertWertz will be making a video, but this is -really- simple.
All you do is click the button corresponding with what you want to flash.
I will work on aesthetics later but for now, it works, checks md5's, and flashes the images.
Problems:
None with my app, however there are sure to be a few bugs on the recovery. Also: this flashes to internal, that's why I included a reset to stock button!
How to fix a borked install: CLICK ME CLICK ME FOR THE FIX!
(Note, you need superuser otherwise not a damn thing will happen!)
Download link:
here
Instructions:
Just click the button that has the recovery you want to flash. It's really simple. Screenshots, credit, and changelog will be posted in the next post.
Wait 10 seconds for the flash to finish then you can reboot if you want.
Please don't mirror
Changelog:
Code:
2.1: Updated with 1.4.3 stock image and the 6.x CWM image.
2.0: Cleaned up the code, added better md5 checking now it won't flash without a good md5.
1.5.5: Fixed md5 hash checking
1.5: Added Reboot Recovery button
1.1: Fixed filename issue for stock recovery
1.0: Initial release.

It was still uploading. It's done now.
Also no, you shouldn't have to uninstall his CWM. It's the same image, just simply flashes over the old one. It just helps to be able to flash whatever whenever you need it.
dumb question
which one is better to flash, or can you do both
and then switch between on boot
cuz on my xperia x10, i can switch between, both on boot...
Stock recovery is what you need if you plan to use the unroot method, etc. CWM is used for custom software / firmware flashing...No, you can't switch between. You flash CWM if you want to flash zips and if you want to have stock recovery again which doesnt give you a menu, you flash stock.
I'll probably end up packaging my root mods into the flashable zip. I'll see if cfoesh or whatever wants to package up snowball mod.

Hey, wanted to say thanks and wanted to say this: flashed CWM and at first I couldn't access recovey with n+Power, but now I can. Tried shutting down and then n+Power, nothing. Then used ROM Manager's "reboot into recovery" and it booted like normal instead of going to recovery.. then ROM Toolbox and used and "shutdown"... Started back up with n+Power and it worked. Tried again a few times with normal boots and shutdowns, then n+Power and it goes to recovery.. Hoping I remembered exactly what I did but hey, it works like it should on any device now
EDIT-Oh, apparently if I let go of the power button too quick then it doesn't go into recovery... just tried again with quick letoff and booted normal even though I had the 'n' button firmly pressed the whole time.. Gave it a 2 second count next time before letting go and went into recovery

Yes I have that on my Asus transformer, like you say it has all the different options in one popup menu. Much more straight forward
Thing is, if it's a sizeable thing to code, is it going to be worthwhile considering cm7/9 is hopefully not far away ?
I know CM9 development seems to have halted (nothing updated on OP in a decent while) but it could still be a lot of work for something that will only be used for a very short period of time.
technically, i should be able to use this to flash back to "complete stock" (including removing cwm)?
It's used to either flash over stock recovery, or over CWM. Depending on which option you choose. It's the same process, just different files. That's it.
Fantastic work. You've made it easy to do and I thank you!

Working with a net--restore is working!
Many thanks to bauwks, nemith, goncezilla, and indirect for bringing clockwork mod to the NT. I'm a thorough-going noob and always will be, so I've been waiting for a custom recovery so I could have a nandroid backup to save my hide (and my ui) when I go a-themin'.
For example, I just hacked up my framework-res to try to get rid of some horrible list separators, which of course completely broke the tablet. Power-N, restore from internal sd card, and I'm ready to break things again.
Thanks!

How to install CWM without USB

Hi Fellas.
I've got recently Galaxy s2.
It has old OS (2.3.5)
I would like to install CianogenMod10.2 or something similar.
The problem with this phone - It has completely broken usb socket. I charge the battery exernally.
I cannot use built-in bootloader, which works with Odin - because , again, usb is not working.
It also has some other bootloader (Powerup +Select button +volume UP) - which looks like CWM - but it's not CWM - because phone has stock firmware from Orange mobile company. This loader has even option to install zip from SD card - But when I try to install cm-10.2-20130824-NIGHTLY-i9100.zip ( latest cianogenmod) - it gives an error - that image is NOT SIGNED.
Is there anything I can do ?
Please advice

I have tried what you suggested:
I downloaded and tried to flash PhilZ touch 3.0.0 temporary flash (file: philz-touch_3.00_i9100-signed.zip)
But it gives me same error: cannot verify the signature.
What I am missing.
Some more questions, sorry if they are too basic
1) PhilZ-cwm6 - Safe Stock Based Kernel - there are many kernels. Which one to choose? This is kernel info of my phone, if it helps:
2) Suppose I succeed to flash PhiZ, why do you suggest to flash neatrom first? why not CM10 right away?
Dear @junglemike,
There is no Philz kernel for gingerbread. Nor will any temporary CWM work on GB!
The way I see it, messing with a phone having a bad USB port is like playing with fire. If something goes wrong, you will have to resort to flashing via Odin (which u can't).
So I suggest you repair the USB port (you can do it yourself too) first.

Yep. You're nuts messing with your phone with a busted USB port. If anything goes even slightly badly, and it does for almost everyone at some stage, you won't be fixing it.
I am starting to think that you are right.
By the way, friend gave me this phone, because he dropped it in a water, and USB never worked after that. I verified that it is not a bad contact issue. I checked with a tester that all 4 contacts are getting through to the motherboard. Probably some chip got burned when when that friend connected charger when phone was still wet.
I just wanted to upgrade because this jingerbread looks really ugly.
I guess I will stay with that anyway.
Is there any app to replace that ugly unlock screen at least? With something similar to jb4.2 ? I mean a enter point that you move from the. Enter to the right to unlock the phone

I've used widgetlocker before with success. Buy the app and then look on xda for widgetlocker themes, there's literally hundreds

Hi... I just flashed the latest build numbers on my 601 32GB and everything is working like a charm. Don't forget to wipe the cache after you finish updating... in my case i ended up in a bootloop. you need to, after updating, reboot and if you get in the bootloop, redtart the note 10 with the power+volume up buttons, go into recovery and wipe the cache. After that, everything is A-OK...
Hope this helps...

The ones that end in J8. But funny thing is, after I installd all my apps and used the tablet for awhile and then restarted, I got into a stuck state on the white SAMSUNG logo. The white leds on the buttons flash, the tablet vibrates, but it gets stuck on a loop... I don't know why.
I go into recovery, flush the cache, but still get into the loop. Then, somehow, I guess by turning on and off the device a zillion times, I get off the bootloop and into the welcome screen and everything is ok again. I don't know why it happens or how to methodically get out of the bootloop state. But when it does boot, it works flawlessly.. Any help??
Thanks all...

Listen, you can root and try it. If all fails, just boot into Download Mode and use Kies to restore to factory firmware/settings. I did that before and it worked like a charm.

ok, well thanks for the input buddy.
Hi, can i flash your pda with my stock csc and modem? Would it work and I get rooted? Thanks.
Rooted successfully with this method
Hi,
I did a successful root with this method on my P-601(32GB). I also installed my original csc instead (created with tar-md5 packager). I afterwards uninstalled KNOX to get rid of the SuperSU security warning with TB (a simple freeze is supposed to work also).
In ODIN mode it now says:
Current BInary: Samsung Official
System Status: Custom
Warranty Bit: 1 (it was 0 before)

1. Download the original firmware from samfirmware or other
2. Create the CSC with tarmd5 packager (if not available as a single tar)
3. Install via Odin with your desired modem/csc files
Forgive my severe learning curve difference gentlemen...what exactly does this download do? Do I need it to root or to install a custom recovery or a custom ROM or Kernal? Thanks!
Hi. Just wondering if this is a deodexed version. Thanks!

No, it's odexed.
is there anyway to get a stock rom with root and custom recovery like touchwiz or twp for p600 ? because i do not think the 601 will work on the 600 since the 600 does not have GSM/GPRS

Even if not, you can use CF-AutoRoot method, then install TWRP from their thread in "Original Android Development". You'll lose nothing and get the rooted device with custom recovery and warranty bit 1 (0 is normal state)
Thanks allot
