[Q] 3G Dongle - Eee Pad Transformer Accessories

Hello dear XDA members !
I'm an happy owner of a Transformer (dock, 16Gb) and my uncle who tried out yesterday is now planning on ordering one for him. But his main purpose would be to use it with a 3G dongle... Would it be possible, even with some tweaking ?
Thanks a lot in advance for your kind and hopefully positive answers

Either use a phone with 3G capability and tether via bluetooth or get a Mifi you can use with a 3G sim card. The USB dongles will not work as they require drivers.

Im no expert but would this be of any help to us Transformer users?

I think it must be possible, I just do not know how. Because there is a mini-pcie position inside the tablet, and it is labelled 3G on the motherboard.
3G hardware will be installed by Asus at some point in the future. So, the software has to support this 3G. It might be easier (or harder) to get the software to recognize a 3G dongle, but I wonder how.
Great thread.

Hello,
(sorry for my bad english)
I would like to use this thread for trying to connect and use my 3G dongle on the TF101.
It's a patch for using some 3G dongles with ACER A500.
Maybe we can use it for TF101 too?
Well... I just want to try on my TF101.
So I've compared files from A500 with files inside the Prime! v1.5 rom.
I've kept some files and replaced others with the new one. But there is a file that I'm not sure:
- rild
I think it's the Radio Interface Layer Daemon or somethink like that.
From the A500 patch, "rild" file contains only text lines like this:
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
insmod /system/vendor/lib/usb_wwan.ko
insmod /system/vendor/lib/option.ko
chmod 777 /dev/ttyUSB0
chmod 777 /dev/ttyUSB1
chmod 777 /dev/ttyUSB2
exec /system/bin/rild.run [email protected]
size: only 1ko
From the Prime! rom, rild file seems to be compiled:
Code:
ELF
size: 10ko
So I wonder if I can replace the file or not without bricking my TF101.
Does someone know this file and may advise me?
Regards,
Kasi
EDIT: Done but no 3G and no Mobile Network option

I use a 3g router. This exact one as a matter of fact. Works awesome and has many other perks such as battery and availability to share the 3g with anyone. I no longer care if the tablet ever supports the 3g modems. I am up and running and happy!
MBK

yes indeed. It works with a 3G router, and by thethering with my Android Phone too.
But in this case TV from my Mobile service provider doesn't work. So I must have my 3G dongle directly connected to the tablet.

I f you can't use your phone as a 3g hotspot eg. blackberry and you don't want to use a portable hotspot like a mifi and you really want a 3g dongle I recommend getting a sapido mb1132 - sorry can't post the link yet new forum user.
You can use it with your 3G/4G dongle or with an ethernet point or just as a range extender about ¬$80 off ebay. You can even use your phone as the data source. just google Sapido the products 3g/4g

I use my Sensation and a MiFi as mobile hotspot. No mod, no hack, no worry about breaking the usb dongle, no worry about the battery life because the usb dongle use a lot of power from the usb port.

Hey, I just found another option for remote internet access, although very similar to the mi-fi already mentioned. I got a Clear Rover Puck portable 4G hotspot. I tried it a few places, work, home, friends house, various parking lots and businesses, and it works great. It is very small and light, so I carry it in my pocket sometimes, and just get it out and turn on when I'm ready to surf. I'm a new customer. They give you 15 days to try it out. It's $35/month, although I think i saw somewhere that you can also use it for $5/day if you don't intend to use it that very much. Just google it and you'll find reviews and info. Also should check your 4G coverage area before buying.

I also bought that thingy from ASUS that allows you to use the bottom port on Transformer as a USB jack, which I guess you'd have to use with a dongle. I'd be afraid of breaking the port if using the dongle a lot, so that is one reason I like the standalone puck better. Also, You can connect several devices to it by wi-fi, not just 1, as with a dongle.

Using Hero as WiFi Adaptor?

I live in uni accomodation, and unfortunately WiFi routers will not work in the rooms.
Is there any way of using my rooted GSM Hero as a USB WiFi Adaptor from my PC?
Ie: share my PC's internet over WiFi using the Hero connected via USB so I can wirelessly connect with stuff like my DSi and PSP.
There's an official Nintendo WiFi USB dongle that does this job, so I'm hoping there's also a way for the Hero to do it. I've used the PDAnet app for my Hero for USB tethering that basically is the exact reverse of what I want (it receives WiFi on the hero, shares it to PC).
Anyone know how to do this?
Wireless tether do the trick?search forums for it
Unless it has been written with a great deal of flexibility in mind, I doubt it. While wifi tether will let the OP connect his handheld consoles to his Hero, I suspect they'll be hard coded to forward this traffic over the GSM interface, whereas what I think the OP is after is the ability to forward the traffic over usb to his PC which I assume has a cabled connection to his uni network.
What s/he needs is simultaneous wifi & usb tethering with the abilty to route between the two. I've not come across anyone doing this before, though it's clearly just a matter of having the right software for the job. Not a trivial exercise to write it, alas.
The best chance would probably be if the author of the wifi tether app is still active & would be interested in adding this functionality to their existing app.
I would say you would have to
Use your hero to create Internet connection
Bridge that connection to wireless card in computer

Once of us has misread the OP. I took the OP's PC to have no wifi connection.
[Edit:] Hmm, I could be mistaken; I'm less certain now.

It's only just occurred to me to ask, why don't wifi routers work? Is it a matter of rules & regulations? Otherwise I'm somewhat confused.
If it is simply a matter that the only equipment you're allowed to connect directly to the network is a PC you register with the sys admins, I'd be inclined to stick a second network card in the PC (assuming your uni connection is via the primary ethernet port) & use this to connect to your (existing?) wifi router which you use purely as a wifi access point. That'd cost you less than a fiver, assuming you already have a wifi router or access point.
I would stick to the rules however. Unless you're sure you know what you're doing they might spot attempts to connect disallowed equipment from the resulting traffic.
you can use the hero as a wifi dongle?im using it now with internet sharing on and just connected to wifi?

Possible solution for 3g with GPS ?

I personally own a 3g WCDMA version of zpad, which i believe it is the same as g tablet from hardware aspect. except with more memory and internal 3g card.
i opened up the zpad and found inside is a mini-pci of Ericsson F3307 WCDMA 3g card for the 3G connection. I knew the linux driver F3307 and F3507g (with built-in GPS) share the same driver source code file, It will be nice to have built-in GPS and therefore I decided to give it a try.
I bought a second hand F3507g and plug into the zpad to replace the original F3307. It looks really good at beginning, the cellphone antenna indicator show full signal strength, When I look into wireless & network setting -> Mobile network -> Access Point Name. I was able to see a full list of provider that available, which means it is working. The SMS works, I even received few message while i was play around with F3507g.
Unfortunately, for unknow reason, i wasn't able to get connect with 3G network, I am not a hardware expert, so not exactly sure why APN is available but just can't get connected.
and as for GPS, nothing show in the setting menu to indicate the availability of GPS.
nothing really got work actaully, but it seems if some know system better can get both 3G and GPS work relatively easy!
anyway, for these who want a 3G on their g tablet, Ericsson F3307 maybe a way to go! the 3g WCDMA firmwares are available here in China.

I belive we are missing the connector for the module which would rquire delicate soldering

The connector is not soldered on, but the soldering isn't that bad since the connector is a through-hole component and the pads are quite large.
That's true, it didn't seems too difficult to solder these. With little patient and some skill, it shall not too difficult to put Ericsson F3307 into the g tablet and get a 3G connection. The 3G firmware is also available in Chinese z-pad forum, and i believe that TNT lite also use 3G firmware.
What really bother me is why F3507g doesn't work in 3G while I was able to receive SMS and get a full list of APN. and I have no idea how to enable the GPS which make this modification all senseless to me.

[Q] Tether a Non Droid Phone with G Tablet for Internet?

Hey everyone,
Searched for an hour about this and read tons of posts that talked about Droid phones and some others, but nothing that seemed to apply to mine.
I am wondering if it is possible to tether my old Samsung Hue phone to my G tablet? I live pretty far out into the country, and this is the best way I have to get internet access. The Hue EVDO connection is always pretty fast and much better than the Hughesnet satellite connection I had before.
Is it something that can be done? If so, please let me know which ROM would be best for this application.
Appreciate any and all help!
Willy
I have a Tilt2 running windows mobile 6.5 and have tethered successfully using a tethering program found in the tilt2 section of xda.
Also winmo here......buy wifirouter for winmo
Samsung Hue is not a smartphone. Not going to be able to WiFi tethering.
Only going to be able to do USB tethering. While the G-Tab can act as a USB host, I don't know if it has all of the kernel modules and networking components necessary to do this. (What basically amounts to dial up networking)
You might consider getting a MiFi type device from your carrier (Alltel? Now Verizon?). Then you could do WiFI tethering through EvDo that way.
Same here - I want to tether using my Cricket Samsung Messager Touch via DUN when mobile. I know it can be done cause we mess with cellular connecting devices (GSM - at&t) at work, but I have no knowledge of the inner workings of linux/android, or the dial-up scripts needed for US-Cellular/Cricket.
Add my name to the list! I want to do Bluetooth tethering so when I'm on the road I can use my phones 3G service to get internet on my tablet.

[Q] bandaid for asus pime wifi

Hello to all, I'm wondering if other is anyway to connect my phone to my home router then broadcast that signal to my prime. So instead of using my data from my 3g I would just be rebroadcasting my home wifi signal. I think this would be a type of band aid until the prime gets some kind of fix for wifi farther than 20ft. I thought of this when I went outside and my prime had no signal but my phone did. I thought it would be nice to piggy back that wifi signal my phone is picking up on. I have a tethering plan on my phone that works fine but when I'm right outside my house I hate to use data when my wifi is simi-free.
Thanks to all for any response.
I've been reading about mifi cards as alternative but then thought " is their anyway to buy a unlocked (I'm assuming their locked to carriers) mifi card and instead of it picking up 3g or 4g date can it be modded to pick up the closest or strongest wifi signal and then use its hotspot ability to transmit it." I'm not sure but I would assume that it would have a pretty good receiver in it, at least better than the prime in its current state.
If these are crazy ideas... I can take it I'm a big boy

What about a bog standard wireless access point or repeater, as that way you do not have to worry about connecting to yer phone?
Not sure if this I correct but is a bog standard router just a better router? Also I think a repeater would probably work I just can't seem to be able to find a battery operated small one (pocket sized). The problem I'm running into is that as a firefighter most of our firehouses are brick and concrete with steel mixed in, not the bet setup for wifi. My phone is able to pick up the wifi from pretty far away even though the signal is poor to fair but my prime is not. So I need something that I can slip into my pocket that will pick up the weak signal and boost or simply give the prime a closer access point. We rove to different stations almost everyday so it needs to be something portable. Hopefully this clears up my situation.
Thank you for your reply.
I think you cant connect and broadcast the wifi signal at the same time with your phone. You either use the antenna and hardware to receive a signal or you use it to broadcast but not both at the same time.
Correct me if i'm wrong though
Well that might kill my cell phone idea.... their has to be something that can be done. Besides just fixing the prime.
I have done what you have said but it does depend on what cellphone you currently own. I have a Samsung Galaxy Captivate with an ICS rom and so my phone is able to transfers a Wifi connection right to my prime using Bluetooth.
Also, seems that when my phone loses WiFi connection and switches to 3g my prime auto disconnects so I don't use up my 3g bandwidth.
That sounds about what I need. You don't know if its only that phone? I have a inspire 4g running ICS from the dhd board. Is it app your using or built into your phone or ICS?
I am using the method that is built into the OS.
On your Phone:
Settings -> More... (under Wireless and Networks) -> Tethering and Portable Hotspot ->Bluetooth tethering.
Connect your prime and phone using Bluetooth.
On your Prime:
Settings -> Bluetooth -> Settings button beside your phone's name -> Internet Access
Then if it works the text "Use for internet Access" will switch to "Connected to devices for Internet"
Bluetooth tethering is super slow, there are some apps were you can tether your wifi connection while connected to another wifi network.
Can't think of the name of the top of my head, maybe someone else knows..
Bluetooth tethering worked with my phone so thank you. It does seem to be a lot slower but this was a bandaid for my prime so at least it works. Slow speed is better than nothing. Cost cutter It would be nice if I could find that app your talking about. Was it on the market?
Is it possible to have multiple bluetooth connections without fracturing thoroughput? I.e. run Tablet Talk at the same time.
You might also try a USB wifi stick if you have the dock or adapter.

ZTE MF60 MiFi success

I've tried tethering to various Android phones with little success, the one that worked would get very hot and drain the battery quickly. I really wanted to be able use the TP away from home and not have go hunting for unsecured wifi access points (few and far between here) so I bought the MF60 in the hopes that it would be compatible and... it is! both with Android and WebOS it shows up as a wifi point and the TP connects without any problem.
For me it's the ideal solution, Android Tablets with 3g/4g are rare and very expensive so for less than the cost of a cheap phone I've got a mobile wifi access point that will be useful even if and when I upgrade from the TP.
Wish mine got the alleged dongle firmware!
It's a great little unit alright. I've had mine plugged into the transformer for years (damn the battery!). But only after I bought it did I discover you can't plug it into a laptop / PC USB port and use it as a network access device. :crying:
I had a great "new" wireless-N hardware firewall / gigabit switch / router, that would ONLY accept it's internet interface on one of the RJ45 ports. And that feature rendered my beautiful HW firewall completely useless.
I heard there was a version with different firmware available elsewhere on the planet that did what I wanted but I gave up looking for the fw after a long search. Mine's the Australian version.
Ahhh... So I got over the pain in time. Otherwise a fantastic little unit indeed!!
