Unlocked Samsung Vibrant on Eclair: What's Next? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my girlfriend just recently made the android switch (yay!). She got a vibrant on ebay that is unlocked for at&t, but is still on android 2.1. My question is, if she wanted to upgrade to 2.2 or 2.3, what would be the best way to go about it?
Will it inevitably relock the phone and i will have to unlock it?
Thanks in advance!

Obviously i have to root it first. Really what i was looking to know is will it relock if i root or flash another rom? Mostly just trying to see how much time i should set aside for the whole process

no it shouldnt, i got mine unlocked and ive been on 2.2, 2.2.1, 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 and im still unlocked
to root, back up(apps and current rom), flash and restore(apps) it'll probably only take like 30 min - an hour tops if you know what your doing
read through http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028 if you need to know

Nice.. ty ty. I have a little experience, i rooted my g2 with the dreaded security locked bootloader hehe. Shouldnt be too hard to root, i was more worried about relocking. Thanks for the info!

Root 4.1.83 v2.2.2

Just purchased my 1st Android phone and am getting used to everything. Without sounding like a broken record and having spent some time on the forum, can I please be directed to or have answered how to root an Atrix 4.1.83 v2.2.2 without flashing back?
Does it make sense to wait for Gingerbread to come out or does it make sense to unlock the boot now?
Any input greatly appreciated.

Look for Gingerbreak in dev section to root.
I would unlock and flash Kenneth Penn's 4.5.91. The Moto release in SOAK will stop you flashing back if you want to.
Beamed from WinBorg 4G via XDA Premium
If you wait and get an update from Motorola and you have your artix rooted on 2.2. How should one proceed? Does one just update and then re-root after that?
Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure if I HAD to flash back in order to gain root. As much as I don't like the motoblur bloat, a few items are handy. Any ROMs to look at?

When I was running 1.83, I used a method from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138204
Check out the third post in that thread. You'll need ADB to get it done, but if you don't have ADB installed you may as well do that.
ROM-wise, I'm using CherryBlur, which is a modified version of the latest 2.3.4 ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160649
And I think it's great. The original HKTW 2.3.4 beta leak had a lot of bugs, many of which have been corrected by community updates and hacks, but Kenneth's 2.3.4 seems to be pretty clean so far. As to whether it's worth waiting for the official release, well... I think it's worth modding your phone just for kicks, and to gain a better understanding of how it works.
Thanks Obscene! Now all I have to do is find the time. In theory; to get bothyour methods done - how long should I expect barring no issues?

We are all keeping it a secret and not posting about it.
Lol, just curious if any devs have news about this, like if it is still in the works, and possibly done, just not posted yet.
I'm with deeds on this one. With all of the recent updates and new kernels and whatnot, its hard to decipher exactly where we stand with this phone, as far as progress. A quick recap of whats been happening would be great.
I love your screen name, it is so awesome, lol.

Update, its not fixed yet. Limited time plus lack of help= slow progress. However by unlocking you can have cm7, miui(oops secrets out), oc kernels, and other awesomeness. Imagine 60% increase in speed while increasing battery life massively. Thats how we mophos roll.

Same here, no ROM on my phone until there's an unlocked bootloader from Motorola/Sprint that keeps 4G. For now, its just a rooted phone with ADW launcher.

I suggest that you start your own thread, (I don't have an issue with you posting about this here), but you'd get more responses for help if you post in a new thread. The only people that will read this are the few with bootloader news, like I said, the few. But, if you ask for help in a new thread, chances are, you'll find what you're looking for. Good luck!
You can unlock your bootloader, flash cm7 (or your rom of choice), and relock your bootloader, and then voila.
CM7 with 4g.
But dont use those as exact intructions LOL.
Theyre are threads about it. Look in the dev section.
You might want to try that out before you suggest it.

One question (even though i should prob make my own thread im not in a hurry to get the answer plus its half the same subject) i have the cmw RECOVERY, ive been out of town and since im normally in kansas city (sprints headquarters, so perfect 4g everywhere) i just wanted to check, if i have cmw RECOVERY does this mean ive lost 4g?

It was a leak, we need a new leak from Motorola, this was not a hack at all so we can't just reuse something.
First of all, THANK YOU everyone for taking some time to answer every question. I really appreciate it. I have been reading, and reading for hours...my eyes are starting to bleed.
So... there is NO WAY we can get a better Android than the 2.3.5?
My build number says 4.5.1A_SUN_USC_19.0, that means I cannot unlock the bootloader, isn't it?
Is there another way (hack?) to improve the performance of the cellphone? I have root it, just to change some files I couldn't, e.g. the sound of the camera.
And finally... is it THAT bad being stucked on 2.3.5?

Some people are trying to use kexec, which is a way to bypass the bootloader and install a rom. it will take some time though. I'm not stuck on 2.3.5 so i cant comment on that.

Thank you, I'll search about "kexec".
The reason I was asking if I was stuck on 2.3.5 was regarding to my build number. I don't know how to conclude it's an ota or not.
You can attempt the Pudding Bootloader unlock, it is unlikely to succeed, but it may be possible. You do risk bricking the device though.

Unlocked bootloader
Well, it appears that I am still the only Photon owner around with 2.3.5 and an unlocked bootloader. Unfortunately mine was some sort of freak accident that it happened. I can run run custom recovery and flash all day long. Unfortunately if I install a ROM with any other version (or maybe it's the kernal) it will not work. It will boot up fine but nothing will connect at all. I've tried almost all of them........

New to rooting, need some guidance

Hello. I have never rooted a device before. I have done some browsing around the forums, and there are so many ROM's and s off's and on's that I have no idea where to begin.
Can someone recommend me which ROM to get and point me to a step by step guide on how to install it? I mainly just want to be able to tether my phone by allowing it to be a wireless access point.
I of course have the DROID DNA. I did read something about not updating b/c the new updates are unrootable, but I think the phone did update .
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Edit: I do have version 1 of the firmware available.
Go to settings, about, software information and tell me your software version. Its either going to be 1.15 or 2.04 iirc.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
As far as I know, you can't root/unlock the current official firmware. You can check what version you are on in settings/about phone. If its 2, you will unfortunately have to wait.
As far as s-off, all it does is make it easier to flash custom kernels, and easier to hard brick. Don't s-off unless you know what you're doing. Of you don't know, you don't need it.

New update for.......?

He's probably talking about where can he check for updates on unlocking on the ota. My answer is really no where. There really isn't much info on it besides that it's being worked on and when and if they get it, it will be released but there isn't like a progress forum or anything. When it gets figured out they will either post a new thread or add to the thread that has the old method.

Ok, so I got a DNA with the version 1 firmware.
What do I do from here? I just want the ability to use my phone's wifi tether. I don't care about the ability to overclock the processor, though it seems pretty much any ROM with super user will let you do it anyway I guess. Also, I want to get rid of all the bloatware. The phone only has 16 GB memory and only has 11 GB available. I don't need Kindle app or any of that other crap on the phone. What else is there that I need to look out for in deciding which ROM to use? Do you guys have 1 to recommend?
I really appreciate everyone's help.

Stock info

Hello everyone, I am getting ready to buy a used m8 and am not 100% sure if it is stock. I am not familiar with HTC. They sent me a screen shot. The only thing I can tell is that it doesn't have the 20mb update yet. They said the only thing is rooted. I am wanted to know if its stock. I'd rather its stock and then I'll play with it. Thanks for your help.
Sent from my LG-D950 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
The screen shot isn't going to tell you anything. Those can be hacked to say whatever.
The phone isn't stock if its been rooted. The phone can never be truly returned to stock once its rooted. The bootloader has been unlocked (which HTC has a record of) unless the user happened to make firewater temp root work, and s-off without unlocking the bootloader, which I think is very unlikely.
A screenshot of the bootloader screen would be more useful, as it would tell you s-off or s-on, if the bootloader is locked, unlocked, relocked, and other details which are harder to change than within the OS.
Even then, if the bootloader says s-on, you would never know if the previous owner did s-off then returned to s-on, which still throws a security flag that can't be changed.
Or are you asking if its been returned to stock? Any phone can easily be returned to stock, now that the AT&T RUU is available.
Thanks for the reply. I realize that once it rooted its not full stock. I was curious if its on stock rom. I wont know more until till I physically see the phone. I've had samsung, motorola, and lg so I'm not familiar with HTC. I'm trying to gather info to know what I'm looking for.

The photo the seller sent doesn't have the right info to tell if its on the stock ROM. You want software number (which isn't on the photo), not build number.
But as I said, it doesn't matter. The phone is easily returned to the stock ROM with the RUU, or other means.
Okay thanks.
