[Q] WIFI calling? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Is WIFI calling only available for T-Mobile customers?
Or can this app be used with any network in the world?

Vibrant at Nicaragua
I'm also curious about this app. It let's you increase the call signal using wifi right? Would that work on any other country?
I live in Nicaragua jaja Central America.

It only works with a T-Mobile sim, and unless you add wifi calling to your account, uses your minutes.
It only does calling an SMS texts, not mms texts. It works on any strong wifi signal, and doesn't work with the miui/CM7 builds right now.

Does UMA WIFI calling work on Samsung vibrant?

Anyone installed the application?
Nexus one can use this UMA feature on T-mobile USA network.
What is 'UMA' WiFi calling? Some of the Froyo ROMs have WiFi calling enabled. I am using it on Obsidian V1. Works just fine.
UMA = Unlicensed Mobile Access, that was the phrase used for Blackberry calling over Wifi. They are not calling it UMA for Android, simply WiFi Calling.

The recently leaked Froyo build (JK2) has a Wifi calling app, but it is NOT UMA. UMA offers seamless "handoff" when moving to/from cellular/wifi, this app does not. Once you initiate a call via Wifi you cannot move out of range of the Wifi signal or you will lose the call.
It is primarily intended as a solution for people traveling, or people who have crappy voice signal in their homes or at work. So on and so forth..

tmobile has a new app they have got from another vendor which they rolled out on mytouch 4g and couple of other devices (it is UMA) so it should be coming to vibrant as well..
the mytouch 4g app is the same as the one you can download on the themes/apps forum. again not uma as it does not allow seamless integration of wifi/gsm. if you connect via wifi, and unplug your router the call is dropped, where is on UMA the phone auto switches back to gsm. as far as I've tested this app is only Working on Froyo, and it works OK, for many it runs in the background. CONSTANTLY and causes UI Lag and frame rate issues when opening menus.

(Wanted) Wifi Calling app for non US Defy owners

From my understanding, the wifi calling app from US Tmobile only works for US Tmobile customers, correct me if i'm wrong.
Is there any way to import this app to another region Defy (mines from UK) and get it working on any network?

No because no UK Networks support it.
I have a Fritz!Box Wlan DSL router from AVM.
This thing is absolutely cool as they provide an app to make/receive
calls over wifi. (FritzFon App)
You can route analog/ISDN/Voip telephone lines to the Defy over Wifi.
If your normal phone rings, your Defy rings also
The Fritz!Box routers are popular in germany, don't know in what other countries
they are sold.
May also work from outside via VPN, but i never tried.

Yeah, this is a great App! Maybe I'll try the VPN option, since it would be a great way to get around call forwarding.
BTW: The app is working great with a FB 7170 as well as with FB 7390
How about Skype?
Or for that matter, Google Voice? http://www.google.com/mobile/voice/

Actually, Orange supports UMA in the UK.
Not sure if the T-Mobile USA wi-fi app would work with it though - maybe trying to get ahold of a compatible app from an Orange-branded Android handset would be a better bet.
Of course, that doesn't help anyone on any of the other UK networks.

where can i get the apk for the wifi calling?
Just get Sipdroid from the Market. You can register it with any sip server (in my case Voipbuster so I can make calls to many countries for virtually nothing, and people from Holland can call me on my Dutch 'landline' number no matter where I am ). The program integrates in the dialer and you can set it to automatic or manual. I set it so that every time I put a # at the end of a number it uses voip. Works great over wifi. Haven't tried calling over 2G yet. No 3G available here.
For SIP VoIP, CSIPSimple has more codec support than SIPDroid which may or may not be important for some people. Depends on the internet reliability and speeds which are available to you.
But because of how SIP works, there are still some niggling issues with battery life in some configurations as it needs to keep alive a connection in order to receive calls. Personally I'm only using it to dial out to landlines on demand at a cheaper rate than mobile.
Sipdroid works quite well over 3G as does Skype. 2G is rather pushing it but some claim they have had decent results. Both of them use quite a lot of juice though.
The main problem with Sipdroid is lack of echo cancelation so should help to use a headset. Skype is a lot better in that regard

I cant video call ?

hi all im having a problem with my S3
When ever i try to video call any one i get an error saying it could not connect and do i want to voice call instead, both phones are video enabled & connected to wifi ive tried different wifi spots, one in my house and one in my bro in laws thats just got a S3,he can video call me fine but when i call him i get the error
could it be a network issue (vodafone) or a phone setting ? ive installed tango video calling app and that works just fine but the stock calling app just doesnt work for me ?
Maybe your signal is weak, eg no 3g.

would 3G matter when im using wifi?
If I understood you right, you aren't using any app to do video calling, so what you are trying to use is 3G video calling, which uses 3G. You can't use Wifi with that.
ok just tried not using wifi but mobile data,im getting full bars for my reception and i have a H symbol for my mobile data
still wont connect via video calling
is your correspondant also on 3G network?
BOTH of you must be connected to 3G, otherwise it won't work.
yeah both where connected to 3G,i had both phones on my desk and tried to make the call
Im wondering if its a network issue, maybe vodafone blocking it
I am not sure if this applies. but for us, to utilize 3g video calls you need to ask your operator to activate it.

Skype is supposed to work trough any net connection, (as in wifi or 3g). But video call over 3g is different from voip services like Skype.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
if the video call is made via your network service then you need 3g, if you are making a video calls with third party apps like gtalk, skype etc then you dont need to rely on 3g and can use wifi instead.
still not tried skype because to be honest i dont like the app , you need to be signed in all the time to receive msgs , in the tango app ive got installed i switched from wifi and made a video call using 3G , it worked perfect
so my 3g is working ok just not the stock samsung app ?

hi, this is not entirely correct. Tango is a service app. Just like a voip service. So it relies on internet connection only. 3g video however is a service from your gsm provider. It will only use specific 3g service of your gsm and not wifi.
I must stress SPECIFIC SERVICE here. You may have 3g data enabled but may not have 3g video (or vice versa), also it needs both phones to be capable and enabled.
To check it you may try another Sim which you tested to work with 3g video calls, or try your sim on another device to make the call.

I'll try that , thanks

Samsung S3 GT-I9305 LTE UK skype problem?

Hi everyone,
Not sure where to post so just posting here in general. One week ago I bought a contract from T-Mobile UK on samsung galaxy s3 GT-I9305 LTE version with unlimited text and internet.
The problem I am facing is that my SKYPE work perfect on wifi but On 3G its does not work at all. can not even login.
I have searched the google and found out that orange and t-mobile uk blocks VOIP and skype calls (specially block skype).
Is there any way around to use skype on 3G? like change port or using some sort of bypass or somefing?
Regards,
In settings > more settings > mobile networks > there are 3 options . There is an automatic option which jumps from band to band depending on coverage. 1. lte/gsm/wcdma 2. gsm 3. Wcdma the later 2 options is 3g mode and I think wcdma means 2g not sure
But Skype works fine for me I always leave it on option 1. Auto
Skype itself does not have any options for this.

Thanks for the quick reply. Mine is set to AUTO as you said. Its not phone problem. Its EE (T-mobile uk and orange) who is blocking SKYPE. My work colleague have iphone 5 on same network and he is also unable to use SKYPE on 3G..
