WHITE EVO 3D [lot of pics] self-made - HTC EVO 3D

So here's the beginning of my story...
While sitting down watching fireworks on the driveway, my phone decides to commit suicide via tumbling out of my pocket. Mind you - I don't have a case for it yet, and I'm still waiting for my screen protector to come in the mail. I felt the shift in my pocket and heard the *clack* sound as the phone bounced three times on the concrete before landing face-down. My heart dropped. After cursing up a storm I mustered up the courage to pick it up to examine it... As expected it was utter disaster. Nicks and scratches on every corner, and a little notch on the aluminum lining of the screen. I know I may sound dramatic, but I'm sure theres people out there who feel my pain.
OK! fast-forward to today. I figured since most of the damage was to the back cover, I would just peruse this interweb thingy and find a replacement... Turns out they average about $35.00 a pop. Not bad. So then my imagination kicks in and I start to wonder if they're going to make a white Evo3D. Apparently not. Unless I'm mistaken there is no plan for a white one yet. Boo to that I say! So the guy I always argue with in my head blurted out "I might as well paint my own"... For once we both agreed and so spawned my plan...
Here's my LIST OF SUPPLIES
2 SHEETS OF EXTREMELY FINE SANDPAPER
1 CAN OF BLACK PRIMER SPRAY PAINT
1 CAN OF WHITE PRIMER SPRAY PAINT
1 CAN OF GLOSS WHITE ENAMEL SPRAY PAINT
1 BOTTLE OF GLOSS WHITE TOUCH UP PAINT (just in case)
1 SET OF PAINT BRUSHES (for the just in case)
1 ROLL OF MASKING TAPE
1 RAZOR BLADE
1 BOX OF POP TARTS ( artists get hungry y'know?)

And here's the before pic... Can't see the horrendous scratches though
So from here on, I'll just let the pictures speak for themselves... Mostly.
Made sure to remove the buttons..
Ready to paint!
3 coats of primer, 2 coats of gloss white
Same goes for the black

Now the last coat of white...
I baked it a few times to cure the paint
The HTC emblem was painted over, so I just scraped off the paint to
reveal the chrome again
see the difference?
And here it is after 9 hrs of painting and drying!!
I gave it a black band to match the original design... I hope I didn't go too overboard.
I'm happy with it
-Should hold me off until we find another alternative! I was originally gonna go with RED but white looks so clean...
So... What do you think? Idle hands do the devils work...

Pretty cool

That's pretty cool, I think I'm gunna try to make mine red and black after I buy a new back. The last time I painted a battery cover (Touch Pro), the paint started eating the plastic :/

how does the painted back feel?
thoughts on the metal bezel?

That is pretty freaking sweet looking.. way to go!!

Well I have to say I don't understand everyones love of the "white Phone" But I know that's just me. seems most people want it just to be different from all the others, including those with "white phones". now with that said. HOLY SWEET! Nice job.

Nice work!

Now rip the front apart and make that white, and it will look good!

that thing is sweet. nice work.

Looks pretty awesome, almost factory bought. You might want to keep the pictures on the down-low though. Knowing Apple, they will claim it looks too much like an iPhone now and sue you...because, afterall, any phone that is white, or black, or has icons, or a capacitive screen, or makes phone calls, or has cameras....is a copy of the iPhone. (notice I said "or" not "and")

Very nice work. Only thing I have problems with these projects is warranty issues.

Nice, would like to see red.

Nice clean job!

Nice work OP, looks good.

Hmmm, paint job looks decent, imho...but great creativity! My main concern is that the grooves in the back are so thin and shallow, it seems hard to get a "factory finish" look on it. But, I'm sure this will inspire others to try to do the same. Maybe, fill the grooves with drywall spackel or sand out the grooves

Nice looking work on your phone....Interested in trying this myself. Before i do though i have a small request....Can you post pics in a week or so and show how well the paint job holds up as far as scratches and chips in the paint?
I know you mentioned that you applied a few layers of clear..that should help with durability...but i still want to see how it holds up....
Thnx...

The carbon fiber part and the Andy part are two different pieces. Carbon fiber is one piece and the green Andy is another. Andy you peel the back off, apply it then peel the front clear layer. Like car stickers.
The carbon fiber piece is almost exactly the size of the back of the gTablet. I trimed the backing with scissors then lined it up to check before applying. I'm surprised I did it good the first time.
The glue on the carbon fiber is really really strong. Instructions say to start in the middle and push out. I don't think that's a good idea because of how strong the glue is.
I applied mine from the left to the right. Going real slow and pushing out the air bubbles as I went.
Anyhow, I love it. Feels great while holing the gTablet, gives it a texture feel to grip.
Guess no one likes it
I think it looks pretty cool...the wife agrees. Wondering if using a water and very little soap mixture sprayed on the sticky side of the vinyl would help the application? Obviously that would allow you to peel and stick a few times before finalizing its final spot and squeegeeing out the water. I've done that for applying clear headlight covers (Lamin-x) with success.
So these are the same skins, but one comes with Andy? BTW, Ithink it looks cool.

I like it.. although not sure if it's worth the $25.. is it in your opinion?... Especially since I am considering getting a case that it will most likely be carried in anyways..
Thats the same one I got so you know I like it....
I bought a similar one from Amazon. It came with a little spray bottle and soap solution and it made the installation very easy. Very much the same as applying decals or skins on automobiles. Just spray the soap water on the adhesive of the skin before applying. The soap water acts as a lubricant so you can move the skin around until you get it where you want it. Once position, carefully start working the water and air out from the center. Works great! Does a great job protecting my G-Tab. The screen protector that came with it is awesome too. Would highly recommend.
Waving Andy 2.0
I was one of the early adopters of this version of the carbon fiber rear skin. But pretty soon after installed it I noticed the waving Andy sticker was having problems. First, the antennas on Andy came loose and would get bent this way and that until finally falling off entirely. Secone, I noticed that there was a dark thinning line that was along the bottom of Andy's body where the gTab's case curves which only got darker and more noticible with time. Lastly, the sharper edges of Andy's upper body and lower part of his head on the sticker had begun to come loose. Eventually I pulled it off since it starting to look tacky.
Then, I contacted Aaron about it since he is the godfather of these skins and told him my issue. He came back with a solution which I liked a lot (but some may not). He made his own waving Andy sticker which was much thicker than the stock one that is shown in the first thread. It also had a white border all around the Andy so that there were no small pieces (like the antennas).
Anyway, I think this version will last much longer than the original version and because of the white border around this Andy I think it stands out even more.
Here's a pic of it in case you were wondering what I was talking about.
I ordered mine last week and I'm still waiting for its arrival.

Body Glove 3d Case

Hey guys, just thought Id share some pictures and a review of the body glove case for the 3d (search turned up nothing). Its nothing special, but you cant try it out at the store without buying it so hopefully it'll help some people out who are on the fence.
The case is very minimalistic, but i like the low profile design. Very sturdy, fits the phone...well like a glove. I think red and black is the only option. The camera is also well protected by a plastic bezel on the case which sits about 2mm off the surface of the camera lens. Overall, good case. Dropped it once already and it held up well. This case does not fit into the sprint car dock. In fact, i cant see any case fitting in that thing (what were they thinking there?). The edges around all the buttons and ports are chamfered, and are very easy to reach.
Enjoy!

Ditto. I took one glance in the store and discarded the possibility. But i am a big fan of the poly cases, this is the one from my old EVO. I think I'll wait for those to be available. They fit really tight and they last forever.
Sent from my Shooter
Just wanted to follow up this thread after a day of use. The bezel around the cameras fell off today, which really pisses me off. For $30 they cant even throw in an extra cent of glue. Its just press-fitted in (hardly).
I've pretty much sworn off all body glove products
although it looks good, but after using a body glove case on my Evo 4g at launch last year, I found that the case actually scratched up the framing of my phone in a month.
possibly the worst case I've ever had for a phone.
This one does have felt inside, maybe they learned. I'm still not a big fan of it, though. The red has some clear film that's already starting to rub off, this may be the last body glove product I buy as well. Besides their wetsuits...
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
For thin cases the best in my opinion are made by Incipio. The Feather and Edge models both for the EVO 4G were fantastic. Felt on the inside, and hard rubbery/plastic outside, it felt so good, plus were super thin and barely added any bolk to the phone whatsoever.
Sent from my EVO-3D waiting for Myn's ROM
i picked this up the other day (i'm a case whore...hard to find one i truly like, so far)
I love the overall design of it, everything about how it is, is just about perfect....BUT the biggest flaw is it's a body glove case and the quality sucks, the red scratches off, that bezel on back looks great but flawed in execution...it looks great but the build quality is not there. what a shame.
on my 4G i went through a lot of cases...but the one that lasted the longest was the best buy branded siedo surface...my favorite was the incipio, but it cracked when i dropped it..phone was fine, the case did its job...
I also have the best buy platinum case for the 3vo, its a super tight fit getting it on and off, but it still feels loose...kinda odd.
so my search for the perfect case continues...not an otterbox fan, those official HTC cases shown not too long ago should be available in july...so maybe one of those will satisfy my case cravings. lol.
would love to go caseless but i don't trust my kids...or myself.
Hey..did you buy that at a sprint store?
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D
I have the black and silver body glove. I'm a little paranoid because I used a hard plastic body glove on my OG evo and it scratched it all up... We'll see how it goes. The quality is definitely extremely poor...scratched the silver up in less than 2 days.

NICE COVER!!!!! you have homepage from it?
I have one too. It is really a sweet case. Only flaw is the black bottom doesn't stay connected well to the other part of the red. Actually I put a little piece of double sided tape on black case to hold it in place. Works perfect now
I bought one with my 3vo on launch day. Its quite the sexy case. Its snug, I have no loose problems. However like mentioned the clear is scrapping off in a corner. Planning to get it exchanged.Tuesday.

Anybody else accesorize their dock? (decal) :D

I had a Transformers Autobots logo decal on my netbook for the longest time... I thought it was sorta cute, at 'least until the new Transformer movies came out.
Anyway, the ASUS Transforer's textured back is too rough for for any larger decal like that (such a shame, wouldve been perfect on it given the name and form factor!), same with the dock; but I had this smaller Android decal laying around and after some measuring I realized it was perfect for the dock's edge/hinge, and voila...
I bought it over a year ago when I got a full sized Andy for my car's rear window, but if anyone else wants the exact same decal for their TF I can dig into my email and figure out where I ordered it from.
You can get skins made that fit on the textured back fine and you can submit any picture you like for uploading on the decal. In theory they are meant to non-copyright images but I am sure that is to cover their as#'s and they don't really check - trust me ;o). Google Zagg - zaggskins. I put on some really cool artwork on my tab's skin and now it looks awesome. Just a shame that they don't have one for the dock. Not cheap but to protect and customise a $500 tab it's worth it.
Had a spare sticker, so chucked this on.
Not been into a StarBucks with it to get funny looks yet, hopefully no-one from Gizmodo is on the prowl.
The glow effect is just the camera flash. Sticks on fairly well, but if it peels off? meh, I'll not be fussed.
Nice, now youre a kool kat. I wanna add a turtle head and limbs to match the texture
I'm not sure Zagg skins would work on the ASUS tablet, the back isn't just textured, it's downright full of dents... It's hard to explain, but you could easily puncture or poke into anything stuck on the back as the grooves (more like shell marks) are fairly significant. I kinda like the unique look tho, feels alright on the hand and doesn't get dirty or scoff easily.
Any skins or decals will work fine. The texture of the dock is the same as the tablet. I have used 3M Dinoc on mine and it sticks just fine. I did both the tablet and dock.
Here is the tablet, dock is the same but without the bee and android name.

Zagg skins work fine on the back (or anywhere else). I put mine on my transformer a week ago no probs at all - the dents are not a problem (like a golf ball) it won't peirce or tear they are strong and designed for it. Don't worry go for it looks awesome.

If directed to me, then no not at all. I even slide it in to my case fine and nothing has peeled up. There is a little slither of the back that isn't covered, but it isn't noticeable. I only know about it because I'm the one that put it on

If directed at me the Zagg skin is fine and not peeling around the edges at all - my girlfriend has had one on her phone for a year + and no probs at all. Regarding the invisible shield on the screen - a little harder to apply and all comes down to your initial application (have done shed loads of them so I am all good with mine) - but it has a lifetime warranty anyway - so if it went crap or starts to peel pull it off send it back and get a replacement - you " had to get your device serviced "
I have an Intel Core i7 badge on the palmrest of my dock. I would take a picture and show it but everyone should know what the badge looks like
i'm thinking about getting a CF Skin, are they pretty easy to take off? i wonder if it leaves a plastic residue

Red HTC logo mod on rezound battery door

I didnt like the black on black look of the door with the logo on the same backround color, so i took the letters out and painted them maroon red with spray paint and put them back. They are held together original with double tape, but if your going to do it, take it off very careful with a razr, they break easy.. (i broke the h and T but doesnt really show lol)

That does look pretty good. They should have made it that way to begin with.
Not pink like the 4 buttons at the bottom?
Also, it'd be more work then it's worth, but rather then removing the HTC letters you could also carefully place masking tape all around them & leave them on while you spray paint.
Oh wait.. The whole battery backing... Spray paint the entire thing like shiny silver or something.... Or the entire phone shiny silver(minus the screen/buttons ofcourse.

All I've seen you do is just bash the phone again and again LOL. Just drop the damn thing and get the Prime or RAZR .
You guys thought i was bashing it from the spray painting comment?... heh... Actually, i think it would be cool to customize it in such a way(or any phone for that matter). If i was confident in my spray painting abilities id give it a go.
p.s. the pink buttons are cool to (i did used to have a Toyota Supra that was heavily "riced out" w/ a custom 2 tone candy pink paint job & rims painted green... the pink buttons on the phone made me laugh & remember the car).
i would paint the phone but its never like factory, they use special adhesion stuff and ya ive painted phones before but never comes out perfect specially rubber ones dont stick they come off easy. But yea the logos come off easy too so not to hard to just take off and paint

as for the back cover, since it is rubber... the antenna parts... i wonder if it'd be possible to just temporarily remove them & then dunk the back cover into some sort of 'flexible' paint meant for rubber materials & coat it in primer to.

Easy!!! here is an old tutorial back when I did my Old EVO
Is done with a sheet of Carbon fiber wrap used on cars
If you dont have the Cardon sheet PM and we can work something out !I have plenty!!
Firts. I detach the backcase
Second, peel off the carbon fiber wrap and stick it to the clean surface of the back of your phone.
Third, Grab your wifes / girlfriend or mother blowdryer and just mold the edges. ( Common sense, when you appy the heat the wraper will mold to any shape or corner. No need to over over heat )
Then trim to shape, with blade / exacto knife.
Then your ready!!
Dinoc ftw!

I was wondering what is left behind on the plastic cover should you choose to remove the carbon wrap? Does it leave a sticky residue which I guess Goo Gone could remove easily?
I was wondering same about 'undoing'. As for goo gone, hopefully you don't mean something like goof off, which is lacquer based and would essentially melt the plastic cover.
Edit: yeah, that bushed aluminum looks sweet! I, personally, think a lot of them look too shiny/glossy.
Now, if only Wallet worked, I'd order it lol

Goo Gone not Goof Off
Never used Goof Off, but the product Goo Gone is good at removing any sticky residue left from price tags or stickers on products. I don't think it would harm the plastic, and it probably isn't lacquer based.
Is the carbon fiber very smooth or does it have some texture / grip feel to it?

No, if you remove it it will not leave any glue or sticky stuff.
Actually, where do you get your carbon fiber from? I'm sure I could use plenty of that on phones, automotive, audio, and everything else I own.
A lot of companies will you send you a free sample of Di-Noc. That's where I got mine (to do my OG 4G).
If this is actually removable (so I don't need another top cover for returns), I'm so doing this, just gonna make sure to carve out the camera hole so I can see the red.
Just did the same thing, the back hole including the red ring is approx. 1.2mm in diameter, and I just found something around that size and cut a hole around it, then stabbed the xacto into the cutting pad and slid the piece around it like a jigsaw to finish off the circle. The total job took around an hour for perfect cuts of all the circles aside from the camera due to me being a bit of a newbie and a bit blind.
Someone said that they make a 15 dollar thing that does the same, but looking at the skinomi carbon reviews, it looks like around the corners they use relief cuts in order to make it around the corners. Using di-noc or a similiar thin vinyl wrap, you can heat it up around the corners and get it to stretch slightly and actually wrap instead of just leaving some parts slightly uncovered to make it work. In my experience also with other products that do this to corners, those sections peel off after awhile because they get caught on your pockets while you slide the device in and out.
Second time working with Di-noc, my vision is a little blurry right now from all the focusing up close, so i'm going to take a break from the monitor, but before I go, one VERY important tip to anyone that is going to try this: use a new blade on the xacto, the sharper and pointier it is the easier time you will have with all the details, i ended up using just the very tip to cut out most of the details.
