Anyone returning their evo because of a overheating problem? Seems to be a serious problem and don't want it blowing up in my face. Read the article yesterday and checked mine and it charged at 4.348 mv. Or is this a software issue?
You wouldn't happen to have a eBay battery would you? Also the battery may get hot the first few charges. To reach 4.3V, well I'm not exactly sure how that's happening. Take it back I guess but if its your first charges then just give it time.
Unless the phone gives you a warning, or just shuts off its probably not overheating. You would be surprised how hot these can get and still be in a normal heat range. I tax my Evo pretty hard and it will get pretty damn hot, but never overheat hot.
What are you doing when it heats up? Are you playing games, charging, talking. Maybe some more info?
I've had mine in my pocket and noticed that some live wall papers really get the phone cooking. The My Beach one almost burned my leg! I guess my phone turned on in my pocket and it was going to town with random screen pushes. The phone was hot enough to hurt sensitve skin.
I've had my OG EVO get griddle pan hot several times. It has survived as well as the batteries. Every time I think I solved it, the next time it was something else.
Knock on wood, so far my 3VO hasn't got as hot. Yet.
next time you phone gets hot check and see how well your gps works.
there are some funky things going on with this phone.
Playing spider man and game froze the phone got extremely hot had to do a batt pull battery died in like 7 Min's
initial batt life was great like 14 hours and still had 50 percent after a week it got OG evo crappy, factory reset and juice def ultimate and batt is back to great.
Don't know if i should return for exchange.

No I'm using the stock battery and it was just plug into the wall charger and not doing anything. Don't we have 4.2v batteries? Shouldn't it not be charging anything about that?

It was just plugged into the wall charger and i wasn't using the phone. I still don't think it should be charging over 4.2v since that's what we have?

It did go to 102f but i guess that's normal but sometimes it goes to 105 or 106 while charging.... But I have the evo4g and that never chargers above 4.2v... Just kinda worried... Don't want this phone blowing up in my face.
Haven't had this issue. I've been traveling and have changed the phone quite a bit from using the phone as a game system. It does get warm after 30 mins of angry birds. Nothing extreme however.

It wont blow up on you. You should be safe at those ranges. when you start hiting 115 and 120 thats when you may want to unplug it and turn it off.
I had mine charging in the car mount last Sunday while running google nav, and the LED started blinking red and green. I assume this is the overheat indicator, although I can't find it in any documentation.
I had one weird overheating incident right after getting it activated at the Sprint store. 15 minutes later, it had been sitting on my desk and I go to pick it up and its crazy hot. I quickly pulled the back off and removed the battery, the battery was not hot, it was something behind the cameras. CPU I suppose. I waited a few minutes to put the battery back in but then it wouldn't turn on (overheating protection?). Went back to the the Sprint store for an exchange. Waited, waited. In the meantime I put the battery back in and it started up. After waiting 45 minutes with no help in sight I gave up... sigh. Sprint stores around here are always a PITA.
I haven't seen this problem again but seriously what the f? I went ahead and applied the OTA updates in case they included some fix for this.
Yeah, in car charger mine hit 114 with gps going. Took it back, better but not great with the new one 102. EVO 4g ran hot but that was self induced. Oc etc... Stock shouldn't go above 102 ever

my phone regularly gets to 105F from regular use sometimes; using the internet browser over wifi, playing games (cut the rope got the phone to 107F), charging also heats up the phone. I don't have auto syncing enabled.

My question is should a phone be charging over 4.2 when the voltage of the battery is 4.2 max? Wouldn't that greatly reduced the battery life if charged over that voltage? Anyone care to explain? Cos I'm really not sure what the implications are.

The voltage of the stock battery is 3.8V. I am surprised it would see higher voltages but it may have a variance that is +-(.4) even when charging the voltage shouldn't vary that much, but the amperage should increase instead to charge the battery and run the phone at the same time. I am not sure where you seen the voltage at though so if its an app, how accurate is that app. How often does this happen as well?

I've been noticing a good amount of heat up by the camera during moderate use. I thought this was a CM7 problem since I had been on it since day 1, but I am now on UnNamed and the problem persists. After some googling it does seem that many other people are having this problem. Not on WIFI, and not in a poor signal area either. Just wanted to see if anyone had any leads as to the cause. What is a good app for monitoring CPU usage by app?
Yes, it may get a little hot but it isn't something to worry about as far as I know. I've gamed for three hours straight and not had any problems except for a low battery life!

From what I've read, it will shut off for protection. I've heard that as long as it doesn't ever get too much above 130 F, you should be OK.
Now if it constantly stays high, there may be a problem. Mine stays around 80 F most of the time and the highest I've ever seen is 99 F but i don't game much or use my camera. One thing you don't wanna do is charge it while hd gaming or charge it in a hot car. My infuse reached 146 F one time doing that.

Somehow 'Words with Friends' caused my phone to really warm up a lot. More so than I've seen with any other situation and on numerous occasions. Luckily I suck at that game and uninstalled it...

When I first got CM7 running on this thing, I tore through the market installing the apps I'm used to. When I was finished, I noticed that it was indeed a bit warm in the area you described. It wasn't hot enough to cause discomfort, just warm enough to note.
I notice when my phone gets hot in that area when it is around 30% remaining and I charge it. I also notice that when it is charging, it really isn't charging but battery is draining. When I got home and charged it at 30%, I left it sitting there for about 30 minutes and when I checked the phone again, it was at 25%. GPS and wifi was turned off. I decided to power down the phone and remove the battery for 5 minutes. I started working fine after that. I noticed it getting hot again today when I plugged it in to charge at 40% but this time it actually was charging. I am running stock rom but rooted. Should this be a concern?
Seems as though a lot of people are having a variation of this problem. Hopefully it is addressed soon.
The CPU will always get a bit warm if it's running.
If it's getting very hot when the screen is off, you've probably got some background task wakelocking the phone.
My phone's screen gets pretty hot when I run web videos/flash videos on HSPA.
Runs a tiny bit warm when i'm running pristine 3D Tegra games on it...otherwise no.
I charge my phone up to 100 percent and even on standby it goes to like 90 percent in about 3 hours and to about 80 in about 5 hours...is this normal....I don't believe this is a normal standby time for any phone...
also does the phone get extremely hot when using navigation without charging???? I get about 40 minutes of navigation and the battery is at 55 to 60 percent...is this normal for everyone???
I called HTC they said the phone should NEVER GET WARM OR HOT and getting that much battery life for navigation is just crazy!!!!...they said the only time the phone will get a little warm is when charging the phone, but never hot...just slightly warm.
also it is the phone itself that is getting hot not the battery.

Rumor has it that the update to software version 1.36.531.6 addressed overheating issues. Not sure of the effect as I updated my phone out of the box. I've had my phone for 5 days now and have not had any overheating issues at all. I have not used the nav for any extended time yet, but keep in mind that it used the modem, gps and display so your batter will drain a lot quicker.

ya I understand but 40 percent in 40 minutes....and it does overheat extremely....I updated to the latest software as well right when I got it.

The other day my phone got hot - very hot - during a 1/2 hour conversation using a VoIp app (Viber). It reached 114.4 Fareinheit degree. At that point I was on Stock 1.36.531.6 (NOT .5 though)
Testing it again using the same VoIP app with the same length conversation on QuikSense 1.5.1. Temperature stayed at +/- 100 F
114 is a normal temp, phones dont have cooling fans like a pc.

Please enlighten me a bit since my phone normally showed temperature between 70's up to under 100's max - and I can proof that with screenshot

Thanks for the suggestion.
I did tried to narrowed down an individual app that may caused the high temp without succeed but the problem did not existed when using Xboarder's QuikSense 1.5.1 in the exact same situation/setting and I'm happy with that.
Just wanna share some experiences with others who may have the same issues though

seems like I'm one of the few...I will be exchanging the phone...you are right...I did pay the entire price of the phone...no contract...so yea...will be exchanging it.
Mine overheats from time to time... I have not noticed a pattern.
The phone is a battery whore.
I work in front of a pc all day so it's manageble. With a monster screen and processing power, I expected it to suck.
I did notice a decline in overheating since the last update.

Battery and charging issues
I have an Amaze from Telus. The phone charged up fine and worked well with decent battery life. I am in the U.S. and now when I have fully charged the phone while its off and then turn it on the bootscreen loads but then the phone dies. Could it be the Supplied Charger or the USB Cable is not giving it enough of a charge? When I swapped out the included HTC battery with an Anker battery it powers up and works fine. Does anybody have any ideas? I have read that some of the Micro USB cables were problematic and didn't allow power to flow to the phone. I have also heard that the HTC power adapter also has had some problems as well.
My phone seems to be getting warm in the lower left corner of the display when I'm using it and the charger is plugged in. If I don't use it and it's on the charger I do not get this warm spot. It has persisted though multiple ROMs/Kernels. The spot is just above the menu capacitive button and I can feel it on the front and side. Prob only about the size of a dime if it were wrapped around the side of the phone. When it's not plugged in I don't notice the warm spot. Is there a component for charging under that spot? Thought about warranty return but don't really want to get a refurb.
No one uses their phone when it's charging? Will usually take about 10 or so min of playing on the phone to get the spot to warm up.

Hmm... Mine doesn't get warm there. I looked at the teardown of the international SGS2 on ifixit and it doesn't even look like there is much down there at all to get hot.
Mine gets very hot if used while charging. As hot as 128F on one occasion. It doesn't seem to matter how many apps are running. Its 105 right now with minimal use. I do keep the screen at its brightest though so I'm guessing that's the issue.

That's dangerously hot. You need to figure out what's causing that. Enough times above 125° and your battery can die or have noticeably shortened life.

Mine get the same way. Extremely hot to the point I can't hold it. Sometimes i play Zynga poker while charging and aftering 20/30 minutes my phone is burning hot and only recieved 1% battery. And sometimes i will wake up and the phone will be hot after not touching it for 6-7 hours and battery hardly charged.
I've noticed that this phone tends to heat up fairly easily..A lot of apps cause it..Not sure what to do about it though..
Mine only heats up noticeably if I play a game or something of that sort, but not really otherwise.

if you're using the battery faster than the phone can charge, this will happen. Happens to me all the time while I'm using the phone while charging.

Where at? where I described or another spot?
My phone really only sunstantially heats up when I am using any browser. Also fyi, there was another thread on this subject.
Yeah, I turned it off that time. But even if plugged in with the screen off I saw it today near 114. If I use while plugged in it jumps from the 90's to the low 100's. I'm just trying to figure out if everyone sees it that hot. I'm using battery indicator in my notifications bar to monitor.

The battery is lithium Ion so you really shouldn't have to from my understanding.
People do even tho is not necessary, for some reason I don't but after a few day battery has gotten better

I mentioned this earlier -- I know it's a li ion that shouldn't need conditioning but when I first got mine my battery life was absolutely horrible. I went through two full discharge/recharge cycles and it seems to be much better now.
Currently 11 hours on battery, 50 minutes screen on, played a couple of games, downloaded a couple of apps, 15 minutes of voice calls, and battery is at 80%.
The way it was when I first got it, I'd probably be at 40 or 50% right now, if not even lower.
I'm also running juice defender and have stopped using the gmail app because you can't set the sync interval on it. Instead I've been using the built in email app and have it set to sync every 30 minutes. Not sure if any of this is doing anything but my battery life is definitely better than when I first got the phone. At first it was so bad that I came very close to just returning the phone.

That's true for me as well now that you mentioned it. First day, I got about 4 1/2 hours with it before i was down to 10%. I was shocked! Each day it has gotten a little better. Over the last 36 hours it has last a full days before a charge. It doesn't really make much sense to me that they are li-ion which shouldn't need conditioned but it seems that we do need to do this. A friend suggested I condition it when I got it and before I started heavily using it, I guess he was right.
Li-ion batteries don't need conditioned. Any signs of conditioning you see may be some sort of conditioning/learning of the OS.

See this kinda stuff freaks me out. I had one decent charge so far, had the phone a week, have been doing full discharge/charge the whole time. Sitting at 38% right now on 16 hours, about half of that was asleep with power save on (its been dropping 20-30% overnight) and only 48 minutes screen time. I dunno how long it should take to improve but it seems like its not taking this long for anyone else.

How long do you usually sleep for???
Seriously though, 20 - 30% overnight sounds like a lot. I tested mine and it dropped about 8% in roughly 7 hours of zero use while I was sleeping. I think even that is a little excessive but I can live with it.
Have you tried running something like Juice Defender? It seems to have made a difference with mine. When I got my S3 last week it was about the same as yours. I did a couple of complete discharge/charge cycles, installed juice defender, and have been going into the task manager and app manager and turning off all the crap that doesn't turn off automatically. It has made a difference.
Oh, and I also did the APN trick to disable LTE. Not sure if that has made any difference but with everything combined the battery seems to be doing a lot better than it was at first.
Don't "they" say that you should not use task managers as they don't work well with the phones? I'm no expert here, so don't quote me, but my understanding is that the One S and Siii owe a lot of their excellent battery lives to their own internal task managing.

The internal task managing is the reason you shouldn't use 3rd part task managers. That's the whole point. Android has done this since 2.0
Having said that, there's nothing inherently wrong with killing a task that is misbehaving... most things that say not to use task managers really mean to not (a) turn on auto task-killing, or (b) kill tasks across the board, albeit manually, under the false impression that freeing up RAM is a good thing.
When you guys say full discharge do you mean draining the battery till it shuts off or going down to 10%, I was under the impression that fully discharging would harm the battery.

I discharged it till zero. Then I turned the phone on and let it shut off again. I did this until the phone wouldn't even try to turn on any more.

Doing this enough times has the potential to damage your battery. Leaving it at 2% - 5% will not make a difference in the "calibration" compared to completely killing the battery.
Killing the battery may work for you, but I want others to be aware of the potential of damaging the battery.
Just my 2cents for the day.
Here. Is a link to battery charging for Li-ion. I have another site that is great in explaining these things. I have a couple of R/C trucks and this info is great to know and have. The same applies. To our phones charge rates. I would hope that when a dev makes up or mods a kernel that they have a basic knowledge of charge rates and the rest of the equations. Foe our batteries this is literally. Life and death. It could also cause a phone to burst into flames. Especially. If we use after market batteries that have poor protection circuitry in them.
I will find the other link later and post it up here to give a possible better understanding of these things. But, try not to rely on me as I tend to forget things a lot. Car accidents will do that to you when you crush your skull. Any way, GIYF.

You basically only need to do the "calibration" once. And the phone has limits set that will neither undercharge nor overcharge them.
edit I think heat is your batteries worst enemy.

This is the WORST thing you can do to a Li-Ion battery. I mean literally you can lose 10% of its life from doing this or even cause the battery to stop charging at all.

Li-ion should never be discharged too low, and there are several safeguards to prevent this from happening. The equipment cuts off when the battery discharges to about 3.0V/cell, stopping the current flow. If the discharge continues to about 2.70V/cell or lower, the battery’s protection circuit puts the battery into a sleep mode. This renders the pack unserviceable and a recharge with most chargers is not possible. To prevent a battery from falling asleep, apply a partial charge before a long storage period.

Seriously everyone should spend a couple hours on that site at some point. Half the information will probably be way over your head (or at least it was mine) but there's enough good information that even half of it is definitely worth learning.
Here is the other site that I was talking about. Though it is for R/C battery packs it should still grant a measure of understanding to the workings of these batteries.

Take into account though. These batteries have circuitry. Built into them to prevent you from truly discharging. It all the way. That doesn't mean that it can not discharge all the way. Things like humidity can play its roll in taking a Li-ion or Lipo battery past the kill zone point. If you know that you will not be using the battery for a good period of time or it is strictly an in case of an emergency battery. Place it into a plastic bag and suck out all of the air that you can and seal it. A zip lock bag works best. Place it in the refrigerator or freezer. There is very little moisture. In there. And what ever moisture makes its way in when you open the fridge. Or freezer will not have time to get into the zip lock bag. The lack of moisture slows the discharge process down especially in the summer. Also the chilling of the battery's chemical. Compounds slows the molecular interactions down. Its a helpful two fold process.

So , all of yous posting about your outrageous phone/battery temps...I tried to make mine get hot. I went outside in 96 degree heat standing in direct sunlight for 25 minutes, screen back light turned up to maximum, and playing Goldeneye on N64oid. Wow..closest I could get was 119. It was hot, but it was still quite useable. No 125/130/140/150 degree temps. Btw, to be exact, I bought my Rezound online on November 26th last year.........battery life still sucks @$$...
Oh, and Verizon car chargers are garbage...:-B

Sure...but..I just couldnt see a phone getting that hot. How did they hold it without burning themselves, let alone the screen melting... :-O . I was just trying to see how hot it would get...seeing if it would get near those temps..

At that temp your battery's already overheating.
If you can get it that hot, I'm sure there are things you could do that would make it hotter. Try talking on it for two hours with marginal signal strength. A 125-degree phone is not a pleasant thing against your ear. And you're most of the way there -- don't think your Rezound wouldn't do it.
Maybe you should run that 119 temp against some other types of phones for a reality check, instead of just comparing it to other Rezounds.

The kernel doesn't like when you attempt to manually change the CPU speed (both up or down) so it overheats. My phone's battery mysteriously died after 2 hours of idling once because I didn't know about it.

Might explain why my phone doesnt wake from charging overnight. Damn thing
The hottest mine ever got from use was 109 F. I left it in the car on a hot day once and when I turned it on to check temp it was at 130 F
