Opera Mobile Question - Nook Color Themes and Apps

I like to change the screen density to 187 on my nook. When I do this it causes opera mobile to be distorted with the menu bars being way larger than they need to be. Is there a way in opera:config to make it go back to the format when the density is set to 161.

The HUGE new GUI from them will be the same regardless of density. I've run things at the default 161 and 187, and it's the same. I just hide the navigation bar (under settings) so it's not in the way so much.

Thanks for the info and the 187 density suggestion.

For some reason couldn't get the built in screen shot in cm7 to work. Here is a photo though.

One might be able to write a custom CSS file to accomplish this.
Have you posted this on one of the Opera forums?

Hmmmmm...I just verified that I'm on the latest version of Opera Mobile in the market (11.1) and mine doesn't look like that. I still have the menu bar on the top, not the bottom. I do see new options such as User Agent Tablet vs. Desktop, so it's definitely a more recent version than the one I'd been using, but it doesn't match the screens here or on the market page. I guess it's worth pointing out that I'm using 170 dpi, so perhaps it determines its layout based on density...tablet vs. phone or something? Any other ideas?
EDIT: Yeah, looking at their Web site, Opera for Tablets still has the bar on top:
http://www.opera.com/mobile/features/tablets/
Since it's presenting me with a user agent setting for "Tablet", I'm going to assume it's optimizing the experience for an Android tablet (which is what I'd want!).

I can confirm it changes when you change the LCD density. When I update cm7 and it has the 161 density it doesn't look like the picture I posted.

Hm. Must be cached somehow? Mine looks the same at 161 as it does at 187.

That could be. I always clear at minimum dalvik cache if not cache in general when updating. Does yours look like the picture?

For Opera Mobile 11.1, the "tablet" setting dumps you to mobile sites. If you want the desktop web page, set it to desktop.
Unfortunately for me, when its set to desktop, OM 11.1 - loads desktop pages super slow, renders it wrong and had problems reloading/refreshing the page.
Use Yahoo.com in desktop setting as an example, you'll see on that page as well as others the header of the page is rendered wrong and often duplicated. This forces me to use the "tablet" but I get redirected to only the mobile site.
11.1 seems to have broken speed, load, refresh. Loading hangs at about 90% complete on most pages.

Anyone found a solution for that? I have the same problem with my Galaxy Tab 7'. I did several tests, and I noticed that for DPI under 174, tablet "mode" is enabled. When I had my Galaxy tab at its original 240, tablet mode was also enabled. But I want to keep it 200, and there's no way for Opera not to think my device is a smartphone.
I've found that this setting shoud be possible to customize within "opera:config" page. That should be the "Left-handed UI" (possibly because in tablet layout, the Opera button stays on the left). But changing that has no effect in my case.
My temporary solution has been to uninstall Opera 11.1 and reinstall the buggy 11.0. That one, at least, doesn't take half my screen with opera interface.
I'm still looking for solutions to this. If you find a solution, please post here =)

I not only tried, but it's my default browser! =)
but when things get heavy, with long searches, many tabs opened and heavy websites, no one beats Opera...

I found what helped was turning off Opera Turbo. But its not the browser hanging, its the ad-server that's serving the ads which may be slow to render a non-desktop browser sized ad. But that is only a guess.

[Q] Screen resolution issue

So I just got my G Tab yesterday. I've rooted it and slammed on Vegan. I'm really impressed with this thing. The one issue I seem to be having is that I download wallpapers (1024x600) but they never show up properly on it. They are always cropped. Am I doing something wrong?
Also, is there a way to verify that my screens resolution is correct? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Happy new G Tab guy
Yeah, that happens to me too. It seems the wallpapers only show the full art in portrait mode.
The only way I have seen to recify that issue is to download MultiWallpaper Live from the market. Set the single picture that you want was your wallpaper as the default wallpaper and it will fit to the screen as you would expect it to.
I still haven't figured out how to correctly display wallpaper without the use of this program on my GTab.

The correct app for this is MultiPicture Live Wallpaper, which is free. https://market.android.com/details?id=org.tamanegi.wallpaper.multipicture
After you install MultiPicture Live, it will appear as an option within "Live wallpapers".

You may have to try the market fix (go down to Part Three). However in my experience you will lose access to the device on the 'Web Market' (your device will disappear, never to be seen again). I have not figured out how to fix that, so be warned before trying it.
When I check the 'market', there's a list of apps I look for specifically (Not because I use all of them, but they seem to cover most of the filters). Some of them I've noticed are only available BEFORE the fix, and some (most) only available AFTER:
Adobe Flash/Air*
Mozilla Firefox*
Dolphin HD
Google Apps (Maps, Voice, Youtube, Voice Search, Gmail)
Launcher Pro
ADW Launcher (probably same filter as LP)
Titanium Backup
Yahoo! Messenger Plugin (Voice & Video)
Smart Keyboard
*means they are only available BEFORE the fix, they disappear from the market afterwards, so if you want them, be sure to download them first (may be others).
Of course, these are only the ones I know about, YMMV.
EDIT: If you still have trouble finding it and have another Android device (like a phone), you can download it there first, then back it up (eg. with Astro or TB), then sideload it onto the tablet (copy it over using preferred method, such as USB or Dropbox, then open it with a file manager on the tablet).
multipicture
I have tried puting different backround pics on each screen which works fine until I reboot and then I get a "picture not available" message on all the screens. I have tried several times with the same result.
I am a newbie - what the heck am I doing wrong!
Agree on the 1024x1024. However, if you can't find background in that resolution or no photoshop skill to make it so, use crop wallpaper.
Depend on the image, set it with the gtab horizontal or vertical.
Voila, no low rez crap background.

It's the built in gallery app made by cooliris, which is 16bit. Google's own gallery app that was there before android 2.1 was 24 bit. They opted for the 3rd party solution probably for it's 3d interface to attract more regular consumers.
I love google's apps for it's functionality. But IMO, graphical interface smoothness is not one of their strong areas.
I am on Calkulins 1.1, Clemsyn 9, Launcher Pro, and my wallpaper was always 1/3 cut off and moved to the bottom of the screen. Last night I switched to Go Launcher and it was fixed. Wallpaper looks perfect. Go Launcher has about 7 themes that are free and really cool. It functions a lot like Launcher Pro and is free.
happened to me
Got my gtab a few days ago and tried some new launchers tonight, when I switched to the toshiba launcher my wallpaper messed up. Live wallpapers work fine but normal ones are cropped, tried the fix posted but I got a "no photo to display" message and I don't know what folder the wallpapers are in to fix it.

Has anyone played with the LCD Density of the 5.0?

NEED TO BE ROOTED
Been thinking of playing with the LCD density but briefly reading thru posts on google and some people have had calibration and touch issues if they tweak their lcd density on their devices, so this has kinda put me off. Just wondered if anyone was braver than me?
Well, I went ahead and updated the dpi using lcd density modder app from the market. I think the sweet spot is 190 but I have the screen shots, 240, 200, 190. As you can see you can fit a lot more on the screen if you set the dpi to 190.
Apparently some apps struggle with this change but so far everything working ok. Sorry for image sizes but I think they emphasise the point

Out of interest what is the default dpi?
The default value was 240, and i currently have it on 190
I simply modified the build.prop entry for icd density to read 190 and all is well. I made a backup of the build.prop of course just in case.
It makes the screen look sharper I think.

Thats all these apps do to be fair.
Yea I used 190 as well with a free app called "LCD Resolution" it has the option to apply on reboot as well
.
Did anyone notice that some of the graphics on the lockscreen come up short after setting the DPI to 190? (I also tried at 210 and while the effect is not as noticeable, it's still there.) Also some of the icons in the notification bar are slightly "off". Although it does look a bit better with a lower LCD density, I prefer fit/finish. Thanks for the tip though.
Changing the lcd density is a hack at the end of the day, and some rendered elements will not like it. I take the approach that it is a trade off of functionality versus aesthetics

i will try 190 dpi
Eh I tried 190 DPI and while it did make it look better on menu-oriented lists like in the Setting app... everything else was awful (the app positioning, the lockscreen, pretty much everthing else scaled for 240).
Its interesting that we can adjust this, but I would say it's not worth it at all other than to just try once.
I just tried it too.. cool to play around with but 240 looks best, imo.
Well... I just hit the ill effects of changing the density. Some of my apps are shown "incompatible with your device" message.
No big deal, but... annoying.
I wonder if some of the "cracked market" fixes for other devices will work with this player.
Anyone know?
Edit:
I got it! I used the Hacked Market per directions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1456306 -> http://rootzwiki.com/topic/15568-rel-market-fix-dpi-compatibility/ to get the Market fooled to thinking I had DPI set at 240. All my apps which were shown "not compatible" with 190 DPI, are now available.

How can you stand the whole screen not being used lol Even @ 190dpi it's still 4x4 and looks horrible =P
4X4? Do you mean the launcher layout?
I use ADW EX and I have no problems with the screen space. The only minor thing that barely bugs me is the lock screen that looks partial.
Well, I am hoping that we get some custom roms on this thing soon. I am running ICS on my Cappy and TP and I am loving it.

LCD Density

Are we able to change the LCD density with this device? I'm on AOKP, on my phone I usually use ROM Toolbox to change it and that works nicely at 160 - 180 dpi depending on preference.
If we are able to change density, what are people running that A.) Doesn't cause any OS issues and B.) Seems to be a good density for tablets( obviously I'd like something smaller than default to fit more stuff on the screen ).
Also does anyone know if there is a way to remove the persistent search bar and app draw icons with AOKP( or another ROM ) and also if there is a way to remove the margin on top, bottom, left and right? I'd like my widgets to be just about flush with the devices edge if at all possible.

Don't know about any of the AOKP stuff, but the LCD Density is just controlled via your build.prop I'm pretty sure. BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU EDIT IT AND BE SURE TO MAKE A COPY OF THE ORIGINAL FILE! Just d/l buil.prop editor and have a look around it and the forum, you'll easily be able to change it.

Yes, was talking about UI size, and yes, I changed this all the way done to 120 without a problem, but settled on 140 as a good setting for fitting more info on the screen. Also set a 10 x 10 grid with Nova Launcher which looks great

Or just build.prop Editor, find ro.sf.lcd_density or whatever, and edit appropriately. Be careful, editing this can cause a lot of problems with your device and its apps, so keep the numbers reasonable.

A couple Android Noob Questions..

Ok so what app do I need to get that will allow me to play you-tube in full screen portait ? A big missing feature coming from IOS
I am not having any luck finding out where my favorites are in Chrome, I just see mobile bookmarks and no other option to navigate to favorites. What I am missing ?
Vimeo not working in Chrome but works in native browser, seriously ?
The cleansing of the full phone search feature is really sad, the wifi reception is pretty weak but otherwise this phone is awesome coming from 4 plus years of iphones.
Flipboard on a 4.8 inch screen is incredible.

For Chrome, click on "Boommarks" to the left of where it says "Mobile Bookmarks" and it will take you up a level where you'll see a folder of your desktop bookmarks. See attached screen grab. Love this feature, btw.
As for the weak wifi, I agree. Doesn't do as well as my iPhone 4 did. But, the iPhone 4 and 4s sure can't do what this phone can.

I was wondering the same thing. After all, if the Video is fully from side to side, the only difference would be full black over the top and bottom section rather than additional info.
the vimeo thing works in stock because it uses flash player. it will never work in chrome because it will never have flash player.

Good to know about Chrome not supporting flash - What confuses me is that Vimeo works fine on IOS devices which of course do NOT support flash. And to add to that I am not seeing many flash sites mostly news sites work on this phone. The Adobe flash app thats native to this device seems to do nothing...
As far as youtube, IOS 4 or newer renders a full screen portrait mode, that somewhat compresses the content on the sides and magnifies the image. Its basically doing a zoom function which is pretty sweet. I thought for sure there would be some Android app that could do the same. I find it silly to have this giant screen and when I play in portrait I get a 1.5X1.5 video with the rest of the screen filled with useless text.
I can easily find my mobile bookmarks in Chrome, what I dont see is the bookmarks I have been saving in favorites. How does one get to the actual saved favorites folder ? It should not be this difficult. The bookmarks in the stock browser are much easier to navigate -

How To Guide Force full screen on all aps and force rotation to landscape

Forcing full screen:
Navigate to Main Screen > Display size under settings and set each app to Full Screen
Force Rotation:
Install the app called Rotation | Orientation Manager by Pranav Pandey from the play store
Set it to Full Sensor OVERRIDE SYSTEM and give it any permissions it asks for.
Set it to Start on boot within its settings.
I expected to, but did not have to, set it to run in the background or tell it to auto boot within battery optimization. It has been working for over a week now.
I turned off notifications so it runs silently.
Thanks for this, its a very useful app! However, I just realised I don't really need it!
When I first setup the Find N, I set every app to Full Screen (as you do), thinking why wouldn't you want as much screen as possible for every app? Some of those apps will only display in portrait, hence the problem that when they start up on the folding screen, they automatically rotate 90 degress, and therefore you have to turn the device to portrait to use the app.
But I just realised that almost all the apps I have (like 99.9%) that will only display in portrait, do not need the extra width of the folding screen, and in fact end up stretched width wise. As such, if you just put those apps back to a 4:3 ratio rather than full screen (which still uses most of the screen), then they display on the folding screen in landscape (though with grey bars down each side). Another benefit is that they also don't look stretched anymore.
Great alternative, thanks.

No worries. Having just been through all my portrait apps and done this, I've also noticed that almost none of them benefit from the extra width even when they have it as they haven't been written to take advantage of it, so are either streched or have loads of space either side. Most are also the types of apps I don't care about using all the screen for, such as banking, parking, or food delivery, etc. All the apps that really benefit from spreading out such as messaging, media, video, and productivity apps, etc., already work in landscape and don't rotate.
I like to use side-by-side when unfolded, so this isn't an issue for me. Would be nice to easily swap out apps when I'm in SBS tho, currently I have to change one to floating, close it, then do the 2-finger ale again...

There is another one called Rotation mentioned above; however, other than I rarely need it anymore, it is not folding phone aware, and therefore you can't have different settings for the outer screen versus the inner screen, so if you force landscape on the inner screen then it will do the same on the outer screen.
Does this app allow you to set different preferences for the outer screen vs the inner screen?

Ah great, thanks for the info!
I love the forced rotation setting. Is there any way to have the settings attached to the system drop-down settings? For example, if I turn auto-rotate on the phone, it automatically turns on 'Forced Auto Rotate' from the app? Not sure if that's a possibility.
Since the last system update, the app no longer works properly for me. Does anyone else have this problem?
No problem there with ROTATION app

Forcing full screen:
Navigate to Main Screen > Display size under settings and set each app to Full Screen
Force Rotation:
Install the app called Rotation | Orientation Manager by Pranav Pandey from the play store
Set it to Full Sensor OVERRIDE SYSTEM and give it any permissions it asks for.
Set it to Start on boot within its settings.
I expected to, but did not have to, set it to run in the background or tell it to auto boot within battery optimization. It has been working for over a week now.
I turned off notifications so it runs silently.

I've been trying to find a fix for my old J3 (2016) that I'm using for a personal project and now I can have it (almost) permanently in landscape mode!!
Thank you for sharing this
